Rafe: So let me get this straight.

Sami: You, um -- you want to make a commitment?

Rafe: It's time. We've been through a lot together.

Sami: Yeah. Yeah, we have. [Chuckles] So, um, exactly what kind of commitment did you mean?

Rafe: I want to be a father to Grace in every way.

Sami: I'm not sure what you mean.

Rafe: I want to be her father, you know, legally.

Sami: You -- you want to adopt her?

Rafe: Yeah. I want her to know that she has a father who's gonna be there for her and who's in her corner, that she has a mother and father who are together.

Sami: I just don't know what to say.

Rafe: I do. Say yes.

Philip: [Chuckles] I'm sorry. I don't think you understand. I'm not asking permission to trade Stefano for Stephanie. I'm saying we're gonna do it.

Victor: No. We can't let them get away with this.

Philip: And to hell with Stephanie?

Victor: That's not what I said.

Philip: That sure as hell sounds like what you said. Look, E.J. Has Stephanie. Okay, we don't know what he's gonna do. We don't know whether or not she's still alive.

Victor: He's not gonna hurt her. It's just a bluff.

Philip: All that matters to you is that the DiMeras don't pull one over on you, that they don't one-up you!

Victor: He is not gonna harm Stephanie.

Philip: He already has. He already has!

Victor: I know what I'm doing. I've done this before.

Philip: We're talking about Stephanie's life here, and I'm not gonna let you abuse her like this. Either you help me get her back, or I'll do it myself.

Owen: You okay? You dizzy? How do you feel? [Grunts]

[Cellphone ringing]

Stephanie: Philip, is that you? Help me! Help me! He has me! Philip! [Crying] Let go of me!

Sami: Rafe, listen. I know you said you want to be Grace's father, but she's got brothers and sisters and extended family and all that. I mean, you wouldn't just be a father to her in a vacuum, you know?

Rafe: I know. I even kind of like that.

Sami: And then there's me. I mean, I'm a mom full-time, long term.

Rafe: I know that, too.

Sami: So, if you were Grace's father, you'd have to put up with me for the rest of her life.

Rafe: Yes, I get that. I actually like that.

Sami: Are you asking me to marry you?

Owen: Settle down, Stephanie. Don't make me have to hurt you.

Stephanie: Oh, so this is my fault now.

Owen: I can't let you have this phone.

Stephanie: [Crying] I'm so scared.

Owen: I know. I know. I'm sorry.

Stephanie: You son of a bitch!

[Breathing heavily]

Stephanie: Hi, this is Stephanie. I can't answer my phone right now, but leave a message, and I'll get right back to you.

[Cellphone beeps]

[Footsteps approach]

Nicole: E.J. What's wrong?

Sami: First of all, this is like the sweetest thing ever. I mean, I can't believe -- I can't believe this, but I'm actually concerned about a couple things. See, I think you're kind of generalizing, you know, your feelings. God, I sound like my mother. Um, and I'm worried about that, you know, 'cause you want to be Grace's father and my husband. And it would be perfect. I know it would. But I -- I don't think -- I don't think I can marry you.

Rafe: Really?

Sami: I mean, not now. That's all. I mean, now, 'cause it's soon, right? I mean, it's really early. We just started our about both of us.

Rafe: Okay.

Sami: Don't be hurt, okay?

Rafe: I'm not hurt.

Sami: Nothing has to change between us. I mean, we're still -- you're not hurt?

Rafe: You want me to be?

Sami: Well, I mean, I turned you down.

Rafe: Well, you know, not to be technical about it, but for you to have turned me down, I would have had to propose first.

Sami: And you didn't.

Rafe: Oh, what, you think I'm crazy?

Nicole: Something's gone wrong, hasn't it?

E.J.: No. Everything's under control.

Nicole: Okay. Uh, I kind of believed that when you said everything was back on track, but you're acting like there's been a derailment.

E.J.: It's, uh, fine. Small problem. I just overreacted. You... young lady. You're up way past your bedtime.

Nicole: Well, she says she's not sleepy.

E.J.: Hmm. Just managed to get Johnny down, and then you wake up. It's quite a night you've had.

Nicole: It's not working, E.J. You can try and pretend all you want that everything is okay, but I know you too well.

E.J.: Nicole, I'm not trying to pretend that anything is okay. Nothing's gonna be okay until my father is home.

Nicole: [Exhales] Look, I know you don't want me involved in what's going on. I get that. Listen, okay, I'll go away. Okay, I will. I will go upstairs, and I will pretend like nothing is wrong. But there's something you need to know first.

Philip: We have to do this, dad. We have to give Stefano back to them.

Victor: No.

Philip: Again, I am not asking permission. I am doing this.

Victor: The men guarding Stefano only take orders from me.

Philip: Well, there are men who are very loyal to me, too. Is that what you want, a civil war?

Victor: Philip, you can't beat me. And giving Stefano back is not going to ensure Stephanie's safety.

Philip: You took Stefano, and E.J. Didn't cave. He retaliated.

Victor: In a very cowardly manner.

Philip: Oh, it doesn't matter. E.J. Has Stephanie. If we don't deal with this, he could go even further. We don't know.

Victor: That wouldn't make any sense.

Philip: E.J. Is not trying to make sense. He's trying to prove to himself, to prove to the voice of his father in his head that he's a real man, a real warrior. I know this because I've been there. I've been there in that same place, and tony DiMera ended up dead. Thinking like that gets people dead, and I will not let Stephanie be next.

Stephanie: [Breathing heavily] Philip, please. Answer your phone.

[Footsteps approaching] No! No! No! No! Let go of me! Let go!

Sami: You're not proposing?

Rafe: No.

Sami: So you want to be Grace's father, but you don't want to be my husband.

Rafe: You don't want to be my wife.

Sami: Well, I'm not the one who made it sound like I was proposing.

Rafe: I never mentioned a proposal.

Sami: You didn't mention anything while I was going on and on about how wonderful you are.

Rafe: You were kind of going on, but, um, I liked the part about you thinking for both of us.

Sami: Stop it. Stop it. You're so stupid.

Rafe: Hold on a second. Wait a second. Wait a second. So you're mad at me for not proposing, even though you don't want to marry me?

Sami: Yes. No. Maybe.

Rafe: All right. Okay, how about this, then? You promise to say no, I'll ask you to marry me, and then you could have turned me down.

Sami: This isn't funny.

Rafe: It's not funny. No. But it's true because if and when we get married, we have to be really sure because we are gonna be together, and it has to be right for the kids. And we're gonna be together for a really, really long time.

Sami: Good save. So you want to take it slow with us, but you're sure you're ready to be Grace's father?

Rafe: Yes. Absolutely.

Sami: I just have one problem.

Rafe: What?

Sami: I don't know how to make it work. I mean, how do we go to court to get you to be the father without anyone finding out that I'm her mother?

Nicole: Do you remember our wedding?

E.J.: Yeah, of course I do.

Nicole: Stefano wouldn't give the priest our rings because he had something to say or ask, really. And he looked me in the eyes, and he asked me if I knew what it meant to be a DiMera, and I said I did. I wasn't lying, E.J. I know what it means.

E.J.: I know you do.

Nicole: Okay, just let me finish first, okay? Now, on the obvious level, I am to keep my mouth shut, and I can't betray the family.

E.J.: It's a lot easier to do that if you don't know what's going on.

Nicole: Maybe. But it also means something else. It means that I understand that what you're doing -- however you decide to handle all this -- that what you're doing, you're doing for the family, for me, for Sydney, that everything you're doing, you're doing for love.

E.J.: So that excuses everything, does it?

Nicole: E.J., this whiff of conscience that you have -- it separates you from your father. You are a better man than he is. You really are.

E.J.: I'm glad you think so.

Nicole: You can tell me anything, E.J. I won't betray you. And no matter what you say to me, it won't change the way I feel for you. I love you, and there are no conditions.

Victor: Stephanie is not going to die.

Philip: That's right, because we're gonna give Stefano back.

Victor: You realize the reason that E.J. chose Stephanie for this is he knew you'd feel guilty about it and behave in a manner less than rational.

Philip: Well, isn't he a shrewd judge of human nature? I get shot. I almost got her shot. She got kidnapped, and I feel guilty? That's how you're supposed to feel!

Victor: No! You didn't do anything.

Philip: I asked her to marry me when I knew what my life would be like.

Victor: Which is exactly why you shouldn't be making any decisions.

Philip: Yeah. Yeah, you're right. We shouldn't be emotional about this at all. Let's be ruthless, real Kiriakis men. [Scoffs] I've got a great idea. Why don't we take Theo? That'll prove to everyone we don't have any feelings at all.

Victor: Just calm down.

Philip: No, I don't want to calm down. I won't. I mean, all of us, as a family -- me, you, my mother -- all of us have been trained to calm down when we should be screaming! When tony died, all that mattered was that I got off. I mean, maybe if I'd been more of a man --

Victor: Just stop it, Philip. Stop it. Think about Stephanie.

Philip: That is what I'm doing.

Victor: No, you're not. You're beating your breast, which makes me think I can't talk to you about this, I can't trust you.

Philip: You really don't see that this has to end?

Victor: I do. But I also know that caving in to them isn't going to solve anything. It's unfortunate that Stephanie got mixed up in a war. And that's what this is. In a war, sentiment leads to casualties.

Philip: So do you really think that they would hurt Stephanie, even if we let DiMera go?

Victor: Think about it, Philip. She's a witness. She can testify in court against them. She has power over them. Very dangerous situation to be in.

Philip: Man!

Owen: Stephanie, stop it!

Stephanie: Let go of me!

Owen: Don't make me hurt you!

Stephanie: [Grunting]

Owen: Calm down!

Rafe: Maybe you should sit down.

Sami: What?

Rafe: Well, I think that you should sit down because what I'm gonna tell you is pretty shocking. Just sit. Come on.

Sami: Okay. What? What is it?

Rafe: All right. Um... um... [Clears throat] You're right.

Sami: Again.

Rafe: You're right. I know. I never thought that I would hear it, either.

Sami: Say it again.

Rafe: Do you not want to hear what it is that it's about?

Sami: Oh, I don't even care. There's just such a satisfying choking sound in the back of your throat when you say it.

Rafe: About the adoption.

Sami: I hope you know I think it would be wonderful if you were Grace's father.

Rafe: Yeah, I want to be her father, but you're right. A legal adoption presents one very big problem. We can't tell people that I'm the father and you're the mother.

Sami: Well, yeah. People can count to nine, and they'll know I didn't even know you when I got pregnant. And we can't even let people know that I'm her mother 'cause then E.J. Will...

Rafe: Yeah, he starts counting, and he can probably count to nine. Yeah. Oh, I wish I'd have known you then. I wish I was Grace's father.

Sami: It would certainly have made things simpler. And I don't do simple.

Rafe: You know what, though? There is one thing that we can do. We just say that I want to be with you and with Grace and make us a family. See, that has one really big thing going for it.

Sami: What's that?

Rafe: It's the truth.

Sami: You know what else is true? You adopting Grace, you being her father, it would mean more to me than anything. And -- and I think it was meant to be.

Rafe: I'm sorry. Are you saying it's okay then?

Sami: It's more than okay... papa.

Rafe: Oh, my God.

[Footsteps approaching]

Nicole: She's out like a light.

E.J.: Yeah. The sleep of the innocent.

Nicole: I checked on Johnny. He seems fine, too.

E.J.: Thank you.

Nicole: Look, would you like a drink?

E.J.: Um, no.

Nicole: E.J., is there something I can do?

E.J.: Nope.

Nicole: Not even listen? Look, I know you don't want me to butt in, but I'm worried that you're keeping this bottled inside.

E.J.: Look, you said a long time ago that... there wasn't anything that I could do that could change your feelings for me.

Nicole: And I meant it.

E.J.: [Chuckles] Yeah, I think I may have crossed a line. Philip Kiriakis is engaged to Stephanie. They're gonna get married.

Nicole: Okay.

E.J.: I had her kidnapped.

Philip: Well, you sure know how to calm a guy down.

Victor: I'm not trying to scare you, Philip. I need to show you that I'm thinking about what would be best for Stephanie.

Philip: If I say one thing, would you listen to me, please?

Victor: Of course.

Philip: I believe you when you say you're thinking about Stephanie, but I don't think you understand something. She was there when I got shot.

Victor: I know that.

Philip: It messed with her head. She has nightmares.

Victor: You told me that.

Philip: You remember how she jumped when that guy turned on the leaf blower?

Victor: Owen.

Philip: She is not in good shape, dad, okay? We have got to help her. And we've got to help her fast. I don't think that she can take this.

Stephanie: [Grunting]

Owen: Oh, Stephanie. Steph-- Stephanie.

Sami: You're leaving?

Rafe: Sami, I told you.

Sami: Well, I know, but I thought since will was bowling, you could hang out for a while. I could make you something to eat.

Rafe: I would like that, but, um, not oatmeal or formula.

Sami: Oh, or chicken and broccoli cut up in tiny, little pieces?

Rafe: Well, you do -- you got, like, 150 juice boxes in there, too.

Sami: Sorry.

Rafe: No, don't be sorry, okay? You do not need to be making me food or anything. You just need to get some sleep, okay? 'Cause I know Grace. She likes to be up at the crack of dawn.

Sami: Five more minutes?

Rafe: You sound like Johnny at bedtime.

Sami: Yeah, and I'm gonna cry if I don't get my way.

Rafe: Aah! You will, too, won't you?

Sami: Yes.

Rafe: This -- this has been a great night.

Sami: Yeah. It's been awesome. You know what I was thinking about when I was putting Grace down? I was wondering if you hadn't been planning this all along.

Rafe: What?

Sami: Adopting her.

Rafe: Why would you ask me that?

Sami: Well, you know, 'cause you just did everything so perfect to help me. You got the false birth certificate and all the papers all lined up for me so that I could take care of her.

Rafe: Well, I got to say that when I first saw her, I fell for her pretty hard.

Sami: Oh, yeah?

Rafe: Yeah.

Sami: I know the feeling.

Rafe: Well, mainly, I just wanted to make sure she was safe. And I knew she was safe with you. What?

Sami: I wish Johnny were here. I wish he was safe.

Rafe: Uh, look. Um, E.J. -- I know I don't say a lot of nice things about the guy.

Sami: [Scoffs] Yeah?

Rafe: I'm gonna tell you this, though. I know he would never let anything happen to his kid.

Sami: You're just saying that to make me feel better... but it's working.

[Door unlocks]

Rafe: You're making it really hard to leave.

Will: Ugh. I'm sorry. You guys want me to wait in the hallway?

Rafe: Hey. Will. I was just leaving, actually.

Will: Yeah, looked that way.

Sami: Hey, I thought you said you were gonna be bowling or something, right?

Will: Yeah, it got canceled. The prices got raised. No one wanted to pay.

Sami: [Chuckles]

Rafe: Uh, well, okay. Um, call me if you need anything, okay?

Sami: Yeah, thank you again for everything. Okay, bye.

Rafe: All right. Oh, will, it's good seeing you, man. Good night.

Sami: Good night. [Chuckles] Hey, I'm so glad you're back. You, um, want me to make you something to eat?

Will: Nah, I already ate. I'm good. So...

Sami: Yeah?

Will: If I wasn't here, would he, uh -- would he have spent the night?

Philip: [Sighs]

Victor: We're not going to let anything happen to Stephanie.

Philip: We already have. You keep telling me you're gonna handle this. You haven't handled anything! Armed guards, surveillance cameras, the best security devices known to man, and yet I still get drugged in my own damn house, and E.J. Shows me a picture of Stephanie on his cellphone. You have blown this. You have blown this. You have screwed up big-time.

Victor: Philip... [Sighs] I'm sorry.

Philip: I'm not asking you to be sorry. I'm asking you to see that we don't have the upper hand here. All we have is a sick, old man on his last legs. And if Stefano dies, we have nothing E.J. Wants, and he still has Stephanie. And let me tell you something. If we lose her, I will never, ever forgive you.

Nicole: You took Stephanie.

E.J.: I know. I know. But she's -- she's engaged to Philip. I had to go for his greatest vulnerability. I know she has no dog in this fight. She's completely innocent, and I know that's what you're thinking.

Nicole: I'm thinking that I hate -- I hate and despise the man who did this to her...

E.J.: Yeah.

Nicole: ...Even more than I did before. And I hope Victor burns in hell for what he's done.

Owen: Stephanie. Steph. Oh, no, no, no, no. Oh, God, please don't be dead. Please don't be dead.

Sami: You want to know if Rafe would have spent the night?

Will: If it weren't for me.

Sami: Wow. I didn't realize we had that kind of relationship where you could be so open and honest with me, will.

Will: What?

Sami: Come here! Come here! So what happened? Did you score with Mia? Did you get some? Did you get to second base with her? Is she your girlfriend, huh?

Will: Mom, mom, stop it. Stop. Stop. Seriously, stop.

Sami: What did you just call me?

Will: Mom?

Sami: Right, 'cause I'm your mother. So, yes, you get to ask me about my personal life, but I suggest you be a little more careful in how you phrase those questions.

Will: [Scoffs] I wonder what it would be like to have a normal mother.

Sami: Don't worry, will. You'll never know. Now, I'm serious. I was talking to Rafe, and we are thinking about you, okay? This is your house, and I want you to be comfortable here. You and the twins and Grace -- you are my priority, and Rafe understands that.

Will: Mom, can I ask you a question without you jumping all over me?

Sami: Depends.

Will: I mean... I don't know when he's gonna be here, and I don't know how to act when he is.

Sami: Yeah, I get it, okay? And Rafe understands that, too.

Will: You guys are pretty serious about each other, huh?

Sami: Yeah. Yeah, we are. We're together. And he's living in Salem now, and he's gonna be around a lot. And I hope that's okay with you.

Will: Look, this isn't being in your face or anything. This is a real question. Does what I think make any difference at all?

Rafe: Hey.

Arianna: What? You begrudge me a few...lousy fries? Ugh.

Rafe: I was gonna tell you. I already salted them.

Arianna: Yeah, you brined them. You don't have any taste buds left. I swear. But that makes sense. You have no taste. Full stop.

Rafe: Nice. Have I told you how great it is to have you back in my life again?

Arianna: I know you're really happy, aren't you?

Rafe: So, can I buy you a beer, maybe some fries of your own?

Arianna: No, yes, and you seem to be in a very good mood.

Rafe: I am. I was.

Arianna: With Tammy, right?

Rafe: Sami.

Arianna: I know her name. It's just so easy to get a rise out of you. I know it's Sami with an "I." She needs a big, strong man to take care of her. And I'm on thin ice again, aren't I?

Rafe: Yeah. It's serious, Ari, like it's never been serious before.

Arianna: Like marriage?

Rafe: No.

Arianna: Madre, gracias.

Rafe: But I am going to adopt her little girl. I'm gonna be her father.

Arianna: Uh, okay. Uh, just cancel that. And are you out of your mind?

Victor: Don't you think I know that? Don't you think I blame myself for what's happened?

Philip: Then do something to fix this thing.

Victor: I will. Believe me, I'll do anything I can, but we have to think it through first. E.J.'S hoping that we react without thinking, that we just do what he wants.

Philip: There is no time to think, dad. There's a clock ticking here.

Victor: I understand that. But first, we have to know where we stand. Can you calm down long enough to tell me what happened and when?

Philip: That's the worst part of it.

Victor: What?

Philip: It was an inside job -- had to be.

Victor: Inside job? Who?

Owen: You shouldn't have done that, Stephanie. That's very dangerous. You don't understand. I have to do what I'm told. You don't understand how powerful these people are. Sorry all I have is this sheet -- no blankets in here. In this place, you never have to worry about keeping anyone warm. Boy, you really are something. I'll give you that much. You really put up a fight back there. You know that? If you'd had one more minute with that phone... the phone. Who was trying to call you? What if it was Mr. Kiriakis? What if he heard you? Where is that damn phone?

[Cellphone ringing]

E.J.: You think the situation's Victor's fault?

Nicole: Come on, E.J. I can't see a scenario where you would kidnap that poor girl except that you are trying to save your father's life. And that jerk is using slow torture, and you took action. Good for you.

E.J.: Good for me?

Nicole: Yes! You're not trying to hurt Stephanie. You're trying to use her as leverage. And maybe this will even open her eyes to the idiocy of agreeing to marry Philip Kiriakis.

E.J.: You're made of pretty stern stuff, aren't you?

Nicole: Well, you might have hit upon the one thing that could stop all this nonsense.

E.J.: Well, I was hoping I had.

Nicole: E.J., you have told me this much. What else?

E.J.: My father had a man working inside the Kiriakis house.

Nicole: And he's the one who took Stephanie.

E.J.: Yeah. He's been calling me, using Stephanie's cellphone. And I just called now, and I got her. She started screaming Philip's name into the phone.

Nicole: Wait, she answered?

E.J.: Yeah. So I don't know if my man handled the situation or if she recognized the number or...

Nicole: Do you think she escaped?

E.J.: I don't know. I don't know. Nobody answers the phone now.

Nicole: Oh, this must be killing you.

E.J.: If I don't have Stephanie, I don't have anything to exchange for my father. His life is in Victor's hands. And I might have just really, really, really upset Victor.

Sami: Will, if you had a real problem with Rafe, I would talk to you about it. Of course.

Will: Yeah?

Sami: Yes. But -- but if your problem is that he's not your dad, well, that's not exactly fair to me, is it?

Will: No, it's not. But you and Rafe -- you guys -- you just seem to be going a little fast. That's all.

Sami: Right.

Will: Okay, now you're mad at me.

Sami: No. No, um, I just -- I just have something I have to tell you.

Will: Whoa. What?

Sami: Rafe wants to adopt Grace, and I said yes.

Will: How -- how'd you talk him into that?

Arianna: How'd she talk you into that?

Rafe: She didn't. It was my idea. And from now on, Grace is gonna be my daughter.

Arianna: Okay. She's not really yours, though, right, I mean, biologically?

Rafe: No, she's not. But it doesn't matter. I'm telling you. I think it's meant to be. Grace was always meant to be my daughter.

Arianna: That is one lucky girl to have you.

Rafe: Thank you.

Arianna: I don't care if you get mad at me. I'm worried about you being tied to Sami's life. That woman is nothing but trouble.

Philip: What are you doing? Hey, no. No, no, no, no. I don't want you calling your people.

Victor: Even if it helps us find Stephanie?

Philip: No, it will only postpone what needs to be done. We need to call E.J. and tell him we have Stefano for him.

Victor: I'm still not sure that's the right thing to do.

Philip: It's not your call.

Victor: I'm still the head of this family.

Philip: That's not what this is about. Listen, when Stephanie's grandmother was here earlier, I saw it in you. All those feelings -- you still have them. You still love her. Now, think about it. If the DiMeras had her, a woman you love, that would be your call. But they have Stephanie, and I love her more than anything. And that makes it my call. And you know I'm right.

Nicole: Victor's not gonna let your father die.

E.J.: Nicole, I think I might have just pushed him to it.

Nicole: No, he's not gonna do anything while you have Stephanie.

E.J.: Did you hear what I said? I don't know if I do have Stephanie, okay? She answered the phone, and now I can't get hold of the guy who took her.

Nicole: But they don't know that. Victor and Philip -- they don't know that. Look, E.J., do you really think that someone handpicked by your father would be taken out by a scared young woman? And even if Stephanie did escape, don't you think you would have heard from Victor by now? Look, honey, I know that you are frustrated that you can't talk to this guy, but that doesn't mean that anything is wrong. There could be any number of reasons for him not to answer that phone.

E.J.: [Chuckles] You have nerves of steel, don't you?

Sami: I didn't talk him into it. It was his idea.

Will: Yeah. Every single macho-man/ex-FBI agent is looking to adopt --

Sami: Will, don't be like that, all right? He loves Grace. He wants to be a father to her. She deserves a father.

Will: Why? Okay, yeah, okay. She deserves a father. But why him? Why now?

Sami: I'm sorry if you're upset.

Will: No, you're sorry that I'm beginning to see that there's something going on here, something big you don't want me to know anything about.

Rafe: Okay, so I made a mistake.

Arianna: Yeah, but it's not too late --

Rafe: My mistake was telling you. What kind of an idiot am I to think that you would actually be happy for me?

Arianna: I'm worried about you.

Rafe: Yeah, so you keep saying.

Arianna: Rafe, please don't be mad.

Rafe: You know, it's great seeing you. Really.

Arianna: Rafe, please, open your eyes. You really don't see.

Rafe: See what, Ari?

Arianna: It's all happening again.

Victor: You're right. This is your decision.

Philip: Thank you.

Victor: Don't thank me. Just get going.

Owen: Stephanie, I'm really, really sorry, but I have to find that phone. I hope you're not too cold. I can't just leave you here all alone.

Nicole: E.J., I know this is hard, but you can do this. You just have to wait.

[Cellphone ringing]

E.J.: One second. I'm sorry. It's Philip.
