Max: Hmm. You know what?
Chelsea: No. What?
Max: We're all alone.
Chelsea: It's a good thing, don't you think?
Max: Oh, it's a very good thing. Yeah. But I got to go -- I got to go lock up the back. And then, you know.
Max: But do you want a drink or something?
Chelsea: Well, um, Daniel said that we should toast to my Grandma's good health, so why don't you open your best bottle of champagne?
Max: Yeah. Sure, we can do that.
Chelsea: You know what would be better, actually? Two glasses of ginger ale.
Max: That's coming right up.
Chelsea: You would have popped open the champagne anyway, wouldn't you have, even though you can't afford it?
Max: Of course I would have. Can't you tell? I'm crazy about you.
Hope: You should see the look on your face. What are you thinking about?
Nicole: You are a perfect, perfect little girl. Everything is wonderful. Only why is your daddy still with that nasty woman who gave birth to you?
Stefano: What did you just say?
Sami: Who is it? I -- oh, hi!
Rafe: Hey, Sami.
Sami: Hi! What are you doing here?
Rafe: Look at you. Look at you. You look great. You look relaxed.
Sami: Well, you know, I'm finally able to go outside, and, you know, no one's trying to kill me.
Rafe: Oh, yeah. That's always a good thing. And you're smiling. That's new.
Sami: Well, it's nice to see you. It's the best welcome-home present I could get.
Stefano: I asked you...what did you just say to that baby?
Nicole: That's what I love about this house -- the privacy. I can't even speak to my own child.
Stefano: I'm waiting, Nicole.
Nicole: E.J. Left hours ago to bring Johnny a toy he left here. He can't sleep without it.
Stefano: And you have a problem with this?
Nicole: Yes, it's a problem for me. It's a problem for me that he's still there. A-a-and the thought of him and Sami together --
[Sighs] Look, the baby cried, and I got angry.
Stefano: You didn't hurt the child?
Nicole: No, no! Of course not. But I slammed the door and I startled her, and I just -- I just feel awful about it.
Stefano: Huh. You're, uh -- you're not having a very good evening, are you? Well, if there's anything I can do to help...
Sami: Hey, how are you feeling? Did you go to a doctor? Is everything okay?
Rafe: Everything's fine. In fact, it's like it never happened.
Sami: I'm so glad. You know, I ended up writing a letter to Hilda's kids.
E.J.: Samantha, you know, uh, maybe I should, uh, get going.
Sami: E.J., Uh, sorry. I forgot you were there.
E.J.: Well, uh, that's very flattering, isn't it?
Sami: No, I didn't --
E.J.: It's quite all right. E.J. DiMera.
Rafe: So, that's who you are.
Sami: E.J., This is Rafe Hernandez. He's the agent who was looking out for me when I was in the witness protection program.
E.J.: Oh, I see.
Sami: Hey, so, you promise you're okay, right? You talked to the doctor?
Rafe: I promise.
E.J.: Mr. Hernandez, thank you so much for looking after Samantha. I'm certainly in your debt.
Rafe: Yeah. Just doing my job. Um... so, you're Johnny's dad, right?
E.J.: Yes. Yeah.
Rafe: [Laughs] You know, now that I meet him in person, your imitation of him's even better than I thought.
Sami: Stop it! You weren't supposed to say anything!
E.J.: What, you shared it with him? Oh, that's okay. You guys -- you guys must be pretty close.
Rafe: Yeah, there's not much you can do about that when you're together 24/7. I heard a lot about you -- your family and...how you operate.
Sami: [Laughs nervously] But, um, yeah, Rafe's right -- we probably know each other better than anyone on the planet, but I also know you know how to keep a secret, right? [Clears throat]
Chelsea: You know, you put ginger ale in these glasses, and it looks pretty nice.
Max: Yeah. You don't think your Grandma's gonna be insulted that we're not toasting to her with real champagne, do you?
Chelsea: No, I think she's happy to be around to be toasted at all.
Max: You know, you've been -- you've been really strong through all this... like tonight, you know, when you found out she was okay. You're smiling brighter, and your eyes are... just really pretty.
Hope: So, you're thinking about...
Bo: Just daydreaming, that's all.
Hope: Come on. I'm a grown woman who can face facts. The last couple of weeks have been awful. We can't just pretend they never happened.
Bo: When we were younger and we got separated, uh, it hurt, and not just "I don't feel fulfilled" kind of hurt. It was a "rip your heart out and stomp on it" kind of hurt. And this last little separation of ours... hurt like that, like we never grew up.
Hope: So, tell you what -- let's not. Let's stay young, naive, and in love.
Bo: Okay. I don't want you to ever leave me like that again.
Hope: Don't worry. I won't. Hey, I told you, I understand. You were doing what you thought was best, that you were looking out for me.
Bo: [Sarcastically] Yeah. Did a great job of that, didn't I?
Hope: I'm getting a mixed message here. You want to pretend like it never happened, but you're still kind of brooding about it. What's going on?
Bo: No, it's -- it's not about that.
Hope: Then what is it? What? What is wrong?
Rafe: Well, sure didn't take you long to start giving me a hard time again.
Sami: That's because it didn't take you long to get that way that you get. He, uh, doesn't make great first impressions.
E.J.: Oh, I know all about that. I'm used to people judging me without actually knowing me.
Rafe: Maybe I came at a bad time.
Sami: No. No, stay. I want you to meet the twins.
Rafe: Yeah, I would like that.
Sami: You know, it's funny. Actually, the reason E.J.'S even here is because Johnny left his laughing penguin at E.J.'S house, and, as it turns out, Johnny can't go to sleep without it. Rafe is the one who got me the laughing penguins when I was in the safe house.
Rafe: Well, what can I say? We're a full-service agency.
Sami: I'm gonna go get them.
E.J.: It's a little late, don't you think, Samantha?
Sami: Oh, they'll go right back to sleep, and, anyway, I told him so much about Allie and Johnny. I can't wait for you to meet them. Hold on.
Rafe: Yeah, it killed her being away from those kids.
E.J.: I'm sure it did.
Rafe: She'd do anything for them.
E.J.: Most parents will do anything for their children.
Rafe: Right, like even wage a really nasty custody battle. Like I said, spent a lot of time together, heard a lot of stories.
E.J.: Well, it's not exactly true. You heard exactly one half of a lot of stories.
Rafe: Right. But you have moved on, right -- started yet another family?
E.J.: Samantha came to you when she was under a great deal of stress. I'm sure that she confided in you a tremendous amount. However, she's at home now, and, uh, you are no longer on the job.
Rafe: You telling me that she's off-limits?
Rafe: Good, 'cause, see, that would be really hard to stomach, especially considering that you're here and your new fiancée and your new baby are, uh -- where are they, again?
E.J.: That and the rest of my life are none of your damn business.
Stefano: [Sighs] You surprise me, Nicole. I mean, you seem genuinely threatened by Samantha's return.
Nicole: I don't want to talk about it, Stefano.
Stefano: Well, you have to think about it, hmm? Elvis and Samantha have a child. She certainly is not gonna go away again, all right? And if her presence in this town and in Elvis' life, I mean, reduces you to some kind of, I don't know, shrieking, nagging shrew --
Nicole: How dare you?!
Stefano: Shh. The child.
Nicole: Would you please leave me and the baby alone?
Stefano: This is a problem in my house. I solve problems in my house.
Nicole: Well, then, maybe Sydney and I should move out.
Stefano: Without Elvis? Good-- goodness sake. Do you really believe that Samantha's allure is so great that she could just simply knock you out of the picture?
Nicole: That cow? She has all the allure of Freddy Krueger.
Stefano: [Laughs] That's funny. But, uh, why, Nicole, huh? Why in God's name are you so scared of her?
[Chuckles] You cold?
Chelsea: A little.
Max: Oh, I was hoping you'd say that. Yeah.
Chelsea: I love it here.
Max: Yeah? Tonight I like it a lot, too.
Chelsea: Oh, my gosh! Look!
Max: Oh, look! Dirty snow!
Chelsea: No, not that. It's a crocus -- that little spiky green leaf.
Max: Dumb crocus. What's he doing out in march?
Chelsea: That is what they do. And those little delicate flowers -- those are the first to report for duty.
Max: Tough and very pretty, kind of like someone I know.
Chelsea: [Sighs] Spring's coming.
Chelsea: It's weird because winter feels like it can last forever and ever, and then you almost forget there's anything like spring. And then you see that.
Chelsea: It can be, um... it can be really sad and lonely.
Chelsea: And then an old friend appears and smiles at you in a new way. And then you think spring might just come after all.
Max: Pitchers and catchers.
Chelsea: Wait, what?
Max: [Laughs] No, it's like, you know, drab, dreary January comes along, and you're like, "ugh," you know? And then there's that little column in the sports page that says that all the pitchers and catchers are back for spring training. And you'll know baseball's coming again.
Chelsea: Wow. You know how to charm a girl.
Max: What? You love flowers. I love baseball. What? I -- almost as much as I love your eyes, though.
Sami: And agent Hernandez is the one who was taking care of mommy and making sure she was okay while I was gone.
Rafe: Well, I can see why you were cranky all the time, being away from these two.
Sami: They're my little angels, right? Angels with penguins.
E.J.: They, uh, look like rather sleepy angels to me, Samantha, so why don't I take them back to bed?
Sami: Yeah. Um, okay, sure. Yeah, thanks. They have a big day tomorrow. They're gonna be spending it with their big brother, will.
Sami: Yeah, he's back.
Sami: Kind of a surprise. Can't wait, right? Can't wait to see will.
E.J.: You're gonna have all your kids with you. Okay.
Sami: Okay, Allie.
E.J.: You ready? Okay.
Sami: All right, come here, big guy. All right. Yep. There you go.
Rafe: Nice to meet you.
E.J.: Come on. Let's go this way. I'll get your penguin in a second.
Sami: See? He -- he's a really good dad.
Rafe: Oh, yeah. He's the best. And he's so great, you can't even tell him he has another kid.
Sami: Shh! Okay? And it's not about him. It's about his father.
Rafe: Yeah, well, if I...
Rafe: I don't know. If I had a kid like Johnny with a mother like you, I certainly wouldn't be so concerned with pleasing my daddy.
Sami: It's not like that.
Rafe: It's what you said.
Sami: Yeah, well, I'm allowed to say things like that. You're not.
Rafe: Well, that's right, and that's...sensible.
Sami: I never pretended like I was sensible.
Rafe: [Chuckles] I've missed the way you think, if "think" is the right word for it.
Sami: [Chuckles] I missed you, too.
Rafe: I have something for you.
Sami: What? Really?
Rafe: A surprise. Look.
Sami: Oh. It's a picture of Grace. She, um, is so beautiful. You're so sweet.
Rafe: Well, she sends her love, too. At least that's what sister Theresa says that she says 'cause I don't know because I'm not fluent in the baby talk.
Sami: [Laughs] You saw her?
Rafe: Yeah. I went to the convent today. It's not right, Sami. It's not right that she's not with you.
Sami: You think I don't feel that way, too? I mean... I just can't ever let Stefano DiMera find out that I had E.J.'S baby.
Nicole: I am not scared of Sami.
Stefano: You act like you are.
Nicole: I'm emotional. I just had a baby.
Stefano: Hmm. But you weren't quite this emotional until you found out that she was back.
Nicole: Well, I'm not happy about it. It was blissful in the world when it was just me, E.J., And the baby... and you, of course.
Stefano: Oh, of course.
[Sighs] I am going to have Mary make you some tea, herbal tea. You need to calm down.
Nicole: What I need is... I need to get the goods on Sami. I need to know why she told Lucas Mia's baby is dead.
Hope: Now you're really scaring me.
Bo: A bit nervous myself. Uh... I-I had another vision.
Hope: About? Me? Well, what was it? You have to tell me. You promised you --
Bo: Yeah, I'll -- yeah. It was about you. You were in bed... making love... to another man.
Stefano: Oh. You're going out?
Stefano: Are you sure that's a good idea? I mean, Elvis is probably on his way home now. I mean, you don't need to embarrass yourself.
Nicole: Look, Stefano, I'm angry, I'm upset, and I just want some privacy, and that's not gonna happen here.
Stefano: You're not going to Samantha's?
Nicole: I don't know where I'm going -- just out, away from here.
Stefano: [Sighs deeply] Why don't I believe you?
Sami: There's this moment with babies. You know, you're feeding them, taking care of them. And then, all of a sudden, they look at you, and they -- they focus in on you. And you just know that they know who you are. And then they smile at you, and -- and now she's growing up, and there are so many firsts I'm gonna miss with her.
Rafe: You sure you're gonna be able to do this -- stay away from her?
Sami: I have to. I have to for my other kids, for her. They need me. Johnny needs me.
Rafe: Johnny. Because he spends half his time at his father's house.
Sami: And I tried talking to E.J. about it tonight, even, and he just doesn't see Nicole for who she really is, and it could be so bad for Johnny.
Rafe: I don't like this. I don't like this at all, not being able to help.
Sami: Oh, Rafe, I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I don't mean to vent on you like this. You know, I mean, it's not your problem. You -- you did your job. You took care of me, you kept me safe, you brought me home alive, and -- and now your work is done, right?
Rafe: Right. Right. Yeah.
Rafe: What, this is funny?
Sami: No, no, not this. But I was just thinking about how when you first got the assignment, how you couldn't wait to get rid of me.
Rafe: Yeah, well... I got used to you, okay?
Sami: Vice versa. And, um, now you don't have to protect me anymore.
Rafe: Yeah. Well, just because my job's over doesn't mean that I --
Sami: You don't want to help me?
Sami: I wish you could, Rafe. I really wish you could.
Rafe: Well, you know... I'd sure like to try.
How do you understand why those who work their way to the top, will risk a fall all the way down? How do you understand that a place where we lost our cares, is now a place lost to a generation? And how can a system that's supposedly broke, can still deliver the most precious moment in life? Making sense of it all, it begins right here. Kevin Newman. "Global national." News understood.
Chelsea: Is there any part of you that thinks that this could be a mistake?
Max: No. Every part of me thinks this is excellent.
Chelsea: I'm scared that this is a mistake.
Max: Are we gonna have a talk again?
Chelsea: I think that we should.
Max: Hmm. This is a date, and, um, you know, we don't usually talk on dates. We just kiss.
Chelsea: The whole date thing -- it's arbitrary. I just think that it's a willful denial of the actual situation.
Max: Willful denial? We were just kissing a few seconds ago, happily, and now you're saying things like "willful denial"?
Chelsea: I'm just... you know, they make tons of movies about friendships that turn into relationships and then turn into a disaster when they don't work out.
Max: Yeah, but those are terrible movies written by terrible people who have no friends.
Chelsea: Max... if we... things are gonna get complicated, and if they don't work out, I couldn't stand losing you as a friend.
Chelsea: Look, I've just -- I've...never dated anybody that means as much to me as you do. And I'm just scared that it won't work out. I mean, it never does. Look at my track record.
Max: Chelse... this is gonna work out.
Chelsea: But how do you know that?
Max: 'Cause it's me, okay? And I-I would do anything to keep bad things from happening to you as long as I could help it, okay? And since I'm the one you're dating, I'd kind of like to think I could help it. But trust me, this is -- it's a win-win situation.
Chelsea: So, you're asking me to trust you?
Chelsea: I think that I really do.
Hope: Okay. You know, I-I understand -- I get that you don't have any control over these visions, but just once, couldn't you see us winning the lottery or enjoying world peace...
Bo: Yeah, I wish.
Hope: ...Not something so incredibly disgusting and awful?
Bo: I knew this would upset you, but I have to tell you what I see so that we can make sure it doesn't happen.
Sami: I'm so glad you're here.
Rafe: Yeah, well, wait till you hear what I have to tell you.
Rafe: I have to go to D.C. Right away.
Sami: Another assignment?
Rafe: I can't tell you anything else.
Sami: Okay. So, what does "right away" mean?
E.J.: Okay. So, I've been in negotiations with the twins, and we have a deal on the table. They concede that it is time for lights out. But they want a kiss from their mother and a glass of water before the lights go out. Now, I should tell you in full disclosure that I promised them you'd do it.
Sami: 'Cause, of course, I will. Stay here, okay? I'll just be right back.
Rafe: Sure, no problem.
E.J.: You know, uh, Mr. Hernandez, a glass of water and a kiss can take quite a long time, so, uh... if you feel like you want to leave...
Rafe: Nah. I think I'll stick around to say good night to Sami. But it does sound to me like the twins are pretty well taken care of, so nothing's stopping you from going home to your new little family.
E.J.: Mr. Hernandez, you'd be very well advised not to concern yourself with my family.
Rafe: Well, guess I'm just worried about how your fiancée's doing -- stuck at home like that.
Sister Theresa: Mary, what are you doing here at this hour?
Nicole: I-I just felt like I needed to come, sister.
Sister Theresa: Is everything all right? I've been praying for you.
Nicole: Thank you for that. You know, you were -- you were so nice to me before and so understanding. I just wanted you to know that everything worked out.
Sister Theresa: And, uh, what did you decide about the baby?
Nicole: I did what I thought was right. I gave my baby up.
Sister Theresa: I know that wasn't an easy decision.
Nicole: It was the right thing to do. But I gave her to someone who will really love and take care of her better than I could.
Sister Theresa: I hope that gives you some comfort. I know you loved your baby very much.
Nicole: Isn't that what love is -- doing what's best for someone else?
[Baby cooing] Oh, is that a baby, sister?
Sister Theresa: Well, yes, as a matter of fact.
Nicole: Oh, please, can I -- can I see her?
Bo: Well, you see what I'm saying. I mean, it's difficult to talk rationally about something that doesn't make any sense.
Hope: Well, I just don't understand. Why does this keep happening to us?
Bo: Yeah, I don't understand it, either, but, you know, after you -- after you had that accident --
Hope: Ah! I shot my sister-in-law, so let's skip the euphemisms, okay?
Bo: Yeah. You were mad because I didn't tell you about my vision, and you thought if I had, you could have kept it from happening.
Hope: It's true.
Bo: Well, I agree with you on that point.
Hope: Okay. So, now I know not to invite strange men to the bedroom. Thanks for the tip.
Bo: Hope, you know what?
Bo: Ah, nothing. Forget it.
Hope: This is no day at the beach for you, either.
Bo: Not exactly.
Hope: I'm sorry.
Bo: It's --
Hope: No, I am. I'm sorry. I'm behaving like this is only happening to me.
Bo: No, no. That's -- that's -- that's okay. I got -- I got to ask you. And I know I should know this, but...
Bo: ...When you came home, did you do it because you wanted to or because you felt you had to for Ciara?
Hope: I see. You want to know if this vision is based on something real, something in me.
Sister Theresa: Seeing the baby might be very hard on you.
Nicole: Oh, no. I-I'll be fine. In fact, I think it might help me.
Sister Theresa: I was just going to heat up a bottle. I'll be right back.
Nicole: Okay. Hey, sweetheart. Hi. Hello, there. Oh. Oh, I got the blanket and everything. Do you remember me, huh? Oh, I'll get that.
[Baby coos] Yeah. I know. Now, why did Sami say you died?
E.J.: So, I suppose it must be quite a lonely life that you lead.
Rafe: Well, I don't have families all over the place like you do.
E.J.: I would imagine that's probably why you concern yourself so much with Samantha's life and my own.
Rafe: [Chuckles] You know, we just met and everything, but you seem a little bit touchy about Sami, especially for someone who's moved on. You see, I was there the night that you called to tell her that. Although she couldn't leave the house because someone was trying to kill her and she couldn't see her kids, you felt the need to keep her in the loop, fill her in on your latest romantic conquest.
E.J.: Well, I certainly don't owe you an explanation, but I'll give you one. Samantha and I share a son. Now, that means that I'm always going to be somewhat protective of her.
Rafe: Protective or possessive?
E.J.: I think you should go now.
Sami: What's going on?
Rafe: Excuse me.
Sami: E.J., You can't just order people out of my house.
E.J.: I'm well aware of that, Samantha, but I really don't appreciate it when somebody just thinks they can start analyzing my life.
Sami: Then you can leave. That's how that works.
Sami: Hey, Rafe, sorry about... what?
Rafe: Well, you were asking when I had to leave. Tonight.
Announcer: Tonight. In diagnosing breast cancer, this premier had to explain why 100 women died. What the inquiry had to say about it. Tonight's "global national."
Max: Okay. Now that we cleared all that up, can we start kissing again?
Chelsea: Look, this isn't about me trusting you. It's about me trusting myself. I... I always screw things up.
Max: But you think there's no possibility that we could have learned from the last time we were making mistakes, like we'll do better this time?
Chelsea: Well, that would indicate maturity, and, quite frankly, I don't have any.
Max: Okay. You want to get something to eat, then?
Max: You hungry? There's a diner. We could order some pizza or something.
Chelsea: So, that's it? You're just giving up?
Max: I-I guess. I don't know what -- what?
Chelsea: So, then, you agree with what I said? You think we're making a mistake?
Max: No! But I can't -- I don't want to talk you into anything. Like, I don't want to be the guy that -- that pushes you into doing what I want.
Chelsea: Okay, um, the date is temporarily postponed 'cause I want to talk to my friend.
Max: He's right here.
Chelsea: Okay. If I came to you as a friend and I told you about this date, what would you say?
Max: I would say that he's a terrific person and you should thank God that you're with him.
Max: Seriously? I'd say... that I think you're scared. I think you possibly have something really good happening here. And this guy seems like he would do anything to make you happy.
Chelsea: Okay. We can go back to the date now.
Max: Okay, good.
Chelsea: I love your eyes, too.
Bo: I'm sorry I had to ask.
Hope: No, no. You need to know. I understand. I left because I was really angry with the man that I love, the only man that I love or want. And I'll prove that to you.
Bo: You don't have to prove it to me.
Hope: But what if I want to?
Sami: You really have to leave?
Rafe: Yeah, just got my orders.
Sami: Can't you ask for more time?
Rafe: Doesn't work that way.
Sami: What is it with those people? Just 'cause you're out there saving lives, they have to be so rigid. I'm just really gonna miss you.
Rafe: Vice versa.
Sami: I'll, um -- I'll walk out with you.
[Door opens] Hey, it was great meeting you. My best to your family. Hey. Hey, hey, hey, hey. Come on, hey. It's not that bad, okay? I will be back soon.
Sami: I just didn't realize how much I was gonna miss you until you showed up at my door.
Rafe: Well, I didn't come here to make you sad.
Sami: You're coming back, though, right? Promise?
Rafe: If that's what you want.
Sami: It's what I want.
Nicole: Oh! Oh, yes. You are even prettier now. Yes, you are. Not that you weren't pretty when you were born 'cause you were, beautiful, beautiful girl. Huh? You know, you're all alone. I know.
[Baby burps] Ooh! I know. I'm sorry. I'm so sorry, honey. I know. I knew the second I held you that I loved you. But I had to give you to that horrible, horrible woman.
[Baby cries] Wait a minute. Maybe it doesn't have to be this way.
Bo: Maybe we'd better take this upstairs.
Hope: I never thought you'd ask. Let's go, Brady. Whoo!
Bo: Ooh, more, more. Give me some more.
Chelsea: So, that was a great date.
Max: Yeah, I thought so, too. We should do it again.
Chelsea: Yeah, I'd like that. [Laughs] We don't sound like us right now.
Max: [Laughs] We sound like two people who have been on a first date, you know, where we say good night but we don't want to say good night.
Chelsea: I guess all good things must come to an end.
Max: I guess. Well, good night.
Chelsea: Good night.
[Knock on door]
Stefano: Ah, dieter. Dieter. Come in. Come in. [Sighs] So... [Clears throat] Tell me about your evening.
Dieter: I followed her like you told me to.
Dieter: It was unsettling, Mr. DiMera. Usually when you tail someone, you find them doing something, you know, unsavory.
Stefano: Mm. Sadly, that's true.
Dieter: But the blonde -- she went to a convent on the south side -- the convent of the holy cross.
Sami: Just thinking about all those times I tried to get away from you -- now I don't want to say goodbye.
Rafe: Well, don't. Just... just, uh -- I'll see you soon, okay?
Sami: You will?
Rafe: Yeah, you count on it. Take care of yourself.
Sami: You, too. Is what you're doing dangerous?
Sami: You are such a liar!
Rafe: Stop. Stop.
Sami: Just be careful, okay? Promise me you're gonna be really careful.
Chelsea: Last night, I was unsure.
Hope: No one is ever gonna come between us. That is never gonna happen.
Hope: I'm everything Sami Brady is not.
E.J.: You crossed a line.
Sami: No, actually, E.J., That would be you.
