E.J.: You're late.
Melanie: I'm not a morning person. You want some?
E.J.: No. What I would like to know is what the hell you think you've been up to.
Melanie: "Up to"? I'm here to seal our deal. Do you have the papers drawn up?
E.J.: Yes, somewhere. Because I trust you implicitly.
Melanie: Well, good, you should.
E.J.: But despite the fact that you have been consorting with Philip Kiriakis...
E.J.: ...And the fact that you let it slip to him that you're taking this fuels deal to me.
Melanie: I didn't not let anything slip to him, and besides, even if I had, it's not like he can prove anything.
E.J.: You might want to think about exactly what it is you told him.
Victor: Where's the fire?
Philip: Uh, I got to get to work.
Victor: Well, stay. Have a proper breakfast.
Philip: I'll grab something on the way.
Victor: There's nothing pressing down at Titan. You already assured me that you have Melanie and the fuels project under control. That's still the case, isn't it?
Philip: Oh, yeah, absolutely. I'm just -- it's the Kaiser account I'm worried about.
Victor: Kaiser? Well, I thought you heard.
Philip: Heard what?
Victor: It's a done deal.
Philip: Since when?
Victor: Well, ever since Brady convinced them to sign. He hit a grand slam.
Chloe: Daniel, hi.
Daniel: I miss you.
Chloe: I miss you, too.
Daniel: You okay?
Chloe: I will be. Right now, I kind of feel like I'm stuck in limbo.
Daniel: Tell me why. Talk to me.
Chloe: Well, I ended things with Lucas, but he doesn't know the truth. So I guess I just -- I feel like I can't move on yet.
Daniel: Well, that maybe about to change.
Chloe: What do you mean?
Daniel: Well, Kate's having her big medical work-up today, and if she gets great news, appears to be in remission, we can leave Salem tonight... and not look back.
Daniel: Well, unless you've got other plans.
Chloe: No, I don't.
Daniel: Well, let's just pray Kate's all right.
Chloe: Yeah, I will. Of course.
Daniel: I'll see you after work. Mm! I love you.
Chloe: I love you, too.
Daniel: [Chuckling] Okay.
Chloe: How's my favorite girl? I missed you.
Chloe: Hi! Oh, hi!
Lucas: Come on, Allie. Allie, we got to go right now. Come on.
Melanie: You know, you are one uptight dude. Do you know that?
E.J.: Why don't you just start by telling me how much Philip knows about our deal?
Melanie: I don't know how much he knows. He might suspect something. He did walk in on our stealth convo, and then he found the money in my purse.
E.J.: The money that I gave you.
Melanie: Relax. It's not a big deal. I handled it like a pro.
E.J.: [Laughs] My dear, you are not a pro in any sense of the word. You're a child, a foolish one at that.
Melanie: I'm none of those things. I know exactly what I'm doing.
E.J.: Well, thanks to your remarkable business argument, I now have a whole research-and-development team out developing one half of the formula that you gave me.
Melanie: Meaning what?
E.J.: Meaning that in a fairly short amount of time, I will crack that code.
Melanie: That's impossible.
E.J.: No, it's not. It's entirely possible. In fact, it's practically a fait accompli. You see, Melanie, you are completely disposable.
Philip: I don't get it. That account was mine.
Victor: And had you delivered in a timely manner, it would still be yours.
Brady: Look, Philip, I'm sorry.
Philip: Sure you are.
Brady: You were out of the office. Granddad told me to give Kaiser a call. It was not my intention to close the deal.
Philip: And yet, close the deal you did, so what if it was behind my back? You got the deal done, Brady, and that's all that counts.
Brady: Philip, come on.
Philip: I'm in awe of you, Brady. No kidding.
[Chuckles] Hey, dad, you ought to give him a new office. Hell, you might as well give him mine.
Victor: Philip, you're making a fool of yourself.
Philip: Gee, where have I heard that before? Oh, I know. It's what you accuse me of whenever I get a little testy about being treated like dirt.
Victor: Will you stop being paranoid? We're simply stating facts here.
Brady: Philip, I was just going at it from a different angle, okay? The investors needed a new approach.
Victor: Exactly. Brady lived in Europe, he speaks their language, and they obviously responded favorably to his demeanor.
Philip: Well, he gives great demeanor.
Victor: He does, indeed. More carrot, less stick.
Philip: Right. And I'm sure he didn't learn that from you, did he?
Brady: Philip, this has nothing to do --
Philip: Just forget it. I'll see you both at the office.
Victor: About the fuels project.
Philip: It's handled! Did I not just say that?
Victor: Yes, you did, but still and all...
Philip: Still and all what?
Victor: I'm uneasy about having only you oversee things. This is much too important to Titan to take any unnecessary risks.
Philip: Nobody's taking any risks.
Victor: So I asked Brady to step in and see if he could do some P.R. With Melanie Layton.
Philip: Are you kidding me? He doesn't even know the girl. Nobody understands what makes that girl tick like I do.
Victor: That's what worries me.
Kate: Who was that on the phone?
Daniel: A former patient. Looks like they did your blood work.
Kate: Yeah, they did, and, hopefully, that is going to be it for a while.
Daniel: Well, fingers crossed, you'll soon get a clean bill of health.
Kate: I'm feeling hopeful.
Daniel: Well, as am I. Well, um...I guess I better get back to work.
Kate: Daniel, wait. Look, I, um -- I just want to tell you that if the news is good, I really believe that it wouldn't have happened without you.
Lucas: I'll tell you what. You know what? If you want, you can stay a little longer. How's that sound? Okay? I think I see your friend Sara over there playing on the slide. Do you want to take turns on the slide with her?
Chloe: Yeah, that sounds like fun, okay? And we'll be right here watching you the whole time, all right?
Lucas: Yeah, and we'll go to Grandma Caroline's right after, okay?
Chloe: Sara's there with her mommy. You can go.
Lucas: That's all right. We're watching you.
Chloe: I'm sorry, Lucas. I just didn't know what to do.
Lucas: I don't want Allie anywhere near you anymore. I don't want you in her life.
Chloe: Lucas, please.
Lucas: Hey, Linda. Yeah, I'm right here. It's fine. If it's okay with you, yeah. Just behave, all right, little one?
Chloe: I never meant to hurt you.
Lucas: Would you stop with the clichés? "I never meant to hurt you" or "I don't deserve you," "you're too good for me" -- I really don't want to hear any of that anymore, Chloe. Tell me the truth. Tell me what happened. Tell me why you broke it off with me. Go ahead, tell me. What? Or who? Who made you decide not to marry me?
Melanie: So, what, are you gonna bail on me and hope that the rest of your team can solve the problem?
E.J.: Well, I'm not really hoping. I have an extraordinarily competent team.
Melanie: Yeah, but that could take months. You don't want to wait that long.
E.J.: Well, I'm an extremely patient man. And from what I understand, it won't take months. Days, maybe.
Melanie: E.J., Come on. I'm not gonna mess with a DiMera. I'd have to be nuts.
E.J.: You are nuts, Melanie. From what I can tell, nuts for Philip Kiriakis, and you're using this project as leverage.
Melanie: I am not. I would never -- I-I maybe have considered that, but I'm over it and I'm over him and his smugness and his arrogance and his stupid little dimples.
E.J.: Clearly. Goodbye.
Melanie: E.J., Wait. I have to prove my loyalty to you, okay? I get that, all right? So I'll do anything. Really, anything.
Philip: You cannot just bring someone else in now. You did that on the Kaiser account, but you will not do it on this. Do you hear me? This is my project.
Victor: This is a Titan project, and I will not have you driving it into a ditch.
Philip: It is under control.
Victor: Under control, is it? Well, then, how the hell did you let the DiMeras slip in the back door?
Philip: I didn't allow anything! Melanie Layton is a traitor, a backstabbing little bitch. She went to them.
Victor: I don't care who went to whom. The point is you lost your grip on it. And since Brady has a rapport with the girl, uncomplicated by a desire to sleep with her --
Philip: What the hell are you talking about? I have no desire to sleep with Melanie.
Brady: Granddad, maybe I shouldn't take on any more projects.
Philip: Nothing has happened between Melanie and me and nothing ever will. Just give me one more chance, okay, to prove myself. That's all I ask.
Brady: Sounds fair to me.
Victor: Very well. But consider yourself warned. One mistake...
Philip: And you'll call for backup. I got it.
Victor: Actually, I was going to say one mistake and Melanie won't be the only one looking for a new job.
Maggie: Well, hello, you two.
Kate: Hey, Maggie. Good to see you.
Maggie: Uh, my morning to volunteer. How is Lucas doing?
Kate: It's not good. You know, this thing with Chloe.
Maggie: Mm. It's terribly upsetting and so sudden.
Kate: I know. It was -- it was totally out of the blue.
Maggie: Did Lucas say why Chloe broke off the engagement?
Kate: She told him that it was for his own good, apparently, some such nonsense.
Maggie: [Chuckles] That does sound like nonsense. Well, if he needs to talk to someone, please have him call me. Stop by, anything.
Kate: I will. Thank you. But, you know, I haven't given up on the wedding. I have hope that it's still gonna go through. Anyway, I really need to -- I need to get going. I'll see you later.
Maggie: Okay. Bye, Kate.
Maggie: Not so fast. You're not going anywhere.
Chloe: I told you why I ended things. I'm not good enough for you. You deserve better.
Lucas: That's right. I do. I do deserve better. I deserve a woman in my life who won't lie to me.
Chloe: I'm so sorry, okay?
Lucas: Why are you crying? Don't cry. You did this. This was your choice. You wanted to blow things up between us.
Chloe: I know. It's all my fault, all right? I'm a horrible person, so just tell me how much you hate me.
Lucas: I can't because I still love you.
Chloe: I still love you, too.
E.J.: I admire your tenacity, Melanie, but I have to remind you, my dear, when you wage a war, there's always casualties.
Melanie: Okay. Um, E.J., You won the war. I mean, the project is yours. Just show me where to sign.
E.J.: We'll see.
Philip: Damn him.
Brady: Look, Philip, I didn't know that he was gonna --
Philip: Yeah, and you. You ever heard of standing up for someone?
Brady: Yeah, I'm gonna get in between you and your dad. That'd be a real smart move.
Philip: What, so this is about being smart, protecting your own ass?
Brady: I'm not about to try to influence victor Kiriakis, okay? How the hell could I do that if I tried? The man's my boss, for God sake.
Philip: You wouldn't want to piss off the boss.
Brady: Philip, don't you take this out on me, all right? And furthermore, I have no interest in working with Melanie.
Philip: Ahh. Wow. I really wish you would have told me that before. My spirits are soaring now.
Brady: Look, I know what this is about, okay? Victor and I got into it the other night about some pretty personal stuff. I think he's just trying to make it up to me. That's it.
Philip: Do you have any idea how ridiculous that sounds?
Kate: Philip. Oh, good.
Philip: Hey, mom.
Kate: I wanted to catch you before you want off to work.
Philip: You caught me.
Kate: Hi, Brady.
Brady: Hello, Kate. Good to see you. Listen, I got to get going, but, um, Philip, we'll talk later, okay?
Philip: Yeah. Well, I thought you were going to the hospital for your results.
Kate: I did. I'm all finished.
Philip: And it looks like you have a smile on your face. Does that mean...
Kate: No, no, no. I don't have the results yet, but I am very positive.
Philip: Me too. Oh, mom. I pray that this is it, that you can start a new life again.
Kate: I'm praying for that, too. Because I am finally ready to be back.
Philip: Watch out, world.
Maggie: Well, now that Chloe has made her decision, what's the plan? I certainly hope you haven't fooled yourself into thinking that you have a future with her.
Daniel: I have patients to see.
Maggie: She swore up and down that she was gonna end things with you. So I guess she just hasn't gotten around to doing that yet.
Daniel: Are you finished now?
Maggie: No. She may think that she's in love with you, but what Chloe is in love with is the excitement... the, uh, rush of doing something illicit, forbidden. She barely knows you, Daniel. And if she thinks that she is simply gonna run away with you and live happily ever after, that girl is in for a rude awakening.
Lucas: You love me? Well, thanks. Thanks, Chloe. That just does wonders for my ego, doesn't it? You kicked me to the curb and then you tell me you still love me?
Chloe: I do. I mean it.
Lucas: You don't mean it. You don't know what you want. You don't even know what you're saying right now.
Chloe: If I could go back and change things, I would.
Lucas: Change what? What? What specifically would you change? I want to know.
Chloe: I don't really know what happened. I just know that it had nothing to do with you.
Lucas: Yeah, that's right. That's what you keep saying. That's all I've heard. Well, you know what? I've had it. I've had it with the clichés. I don't need it anymore, all right? Go lie to somebody else, Chloe. I've had enough.
Chloe: Lucas, wait, please. Oh, God. [Sobbing]
Are you all right, dear?
E.J.: Brady. Well, now my morning is complete.
Brady: How you doing? How's Nicole?
E.J.: Maybe I should ask you that, as you seem to be spending more time with her than I have recently.
Brady: That's a slight exaggeration.
Brady: Hey, E.J., You know, I heard you put a wedding announcement in the paper.
E.J.: Well, we haven't set on a date just yet.
Brady: It said march 18th.
E.J.: Well, now, we might push it, but I wouldn't worry about it too much, Brady. You're not on the guest list.
Brady: Oh. 'Cause I was really looking forward to watching Nicole make the biggest mistake of her life and marry into your sick, twisted family.
E.J.: That's our sick, twisted family, dear boy.
Brady: I'm no more a DiMera than your mailman, E.J.
E.J.: A simple DNA test would prove otherwise. You know, as far as my father is concerned, disloyalty to the family comes at a very steep price. So if you insist on clinging to these Kiriakis roots of yours, let me assure you, you're as fair game as anyone.
Kate: So, I thought it might be fun for the three of us to take a little trip together once the weather warms up.
Philip: That sounds nice.
Kate: Well, good. I mean, it's contingent on my health, of course, but I wanted to get your thoughts on it.
Philip: Count me in.
Kate: Okay. [Chuckles]
Victor: Hello, Kate. I thought I heard your voice.
Kate: Good morning, victor. I was just asking Philip if he'd like to take a little trip with me and Lucas. Of course, if you can spare him from Titan for a few days.
Victor: I think we can manage.
Philip: I think I should head out. Call me when you get the results, okay?
Kate: Yes, of course. Okay, now, what's going on between the two of you?
Victor: He screwed up. I called him on it. End of story.
Kate: I really wish you wouldn't be so hard on him.
Victor: Kate, the boy has got to learn. I can't be running interference for my C.E.O.
Kate: Victor, there are some things that are more important than work -- your family, your friends, your health.
Victor: You're gonna be fine, Kate. You're gonna outlive all of us.
Kate: Well, I don't know about that, but I do know if I get the news that I'm hoping for, the first thing I'm going to do is become an involved mother again, and the first step I'm going to make is making things right for my sons.
What's the matter? Why the tears?
Chloe: Oh, it's none of your -- oh, you're a priest. I'm sorry.
And you're a very troubled young woman. Would you like to talk about it?
Chloe: I've done a terrible thing, father, and I need some help.
Pete: Hey, man. Can I get you something?
Lucas: Yeah, um, I'll do a bloody Mary.
Melanie: Hey, Lucas Horton? Aren't you Philip Kiriakis' brother?
E.J.: Well...you should think about what I said, cousin.
Brady: Oh, I will. It affected me profoundly.
E.J.: I wouldn't take it too lightly if I were you.
Brady: Right. It was really good catching up with you.
Philip: What the hell do you think you're doing? Hmm?
Victor: Kate, Kate. Tsk, tsk, tsk.
Victor: You've got to give your sons some space. You have to allow them to make their own mistakes. The last thing they need is a hovering mother who's wiping their nose.
Kate: Really? Really? This is coming from the daddy who invites his grown son and his grandson to move back into the house.
Victor: My point is --
Kate: No. There is no point here. We both want what's best for our children. And sometimes that means giving them a little guidance, pushing them in the right direction.
Victor: As in the case of Lucas and his inability to find a suitable mate?
Kate: I wish I knew what happened with Chloe.
Victor: What's to know? She's a two-bit tramp who sweeps through men like a tornado.
Kate: Enough of that, okay? When are you gonna stop putting her down? It's like a bad joke, victor.
Victor: Well, help me understand, then. She cuts out your son's heart, tramples on it, and yet you defend her to me of all people.
Kate: Yes, I do. I am defending her because I do believe that she loves Lucas and I believe that she's in pain because of this decision.
Victor: Oh, I'm sure she is. She's probably in terrible pain. Probably sleeping with another man right now to alleviate the misery.
Kate: Come on. Look, she had misgivings about the marriage, all right? That happens. It's a big step, and it can be scary.
Victor: So what are you gonna do? Quell her fears?
Kate: [Sighs] No. I'm going to make things right between the two of them. That's my job, and that's my goal.
Daniel: You listen to me. Chloe and I...look, we never meant to hurt anybody. Could you at least try -- just try to understand that?
Maggie: No, I can't. And I won't.
Daniel: No? Well, then, you leave me the hell alone.
Maggie: Hey, how about you try to understand this? Lucas is family. He's in terrible pain right now because he was so unceremoniously dumped and he doesn't know why. He probably thinks it was something he did.
Daniel: Do you think -- do you really think his life would be better if he knew Chloe was cheating? Really.
Maggie: He'll know eventually. Either he finds out because people, they have the courage and the guts to tell him the truth, or he'll stumble across the truth like I did and feel shocked and disgusted and lied to and made a complete fool of. So you tell me, Daniel, what's the better way to go here? Any thoughts on that?
Chloe: I'm not catholic, so...
Makes no difference.
Chloe: Well, maybe if I was, I'd hurry straight to confession. Although I'm sure my soul's beyond saving at this point.
That's never the case, child.
Chloe: Oh, I don't know. You might change your mind once you hear what I've done. [Sighs] I'm sorry. This is difficult for me.
Take your time.
Chloe: Well, my life has never been easy. I was adopted, and I always struggled to fit in at school. At one point, I was sick with cancer. I've had a marriage, divorce. I always considered myself a strong person. But I just haven't felt that way at all lately. I feel guilty, weak, embarrassed. I've hurt people that I love because I couldn't control my feelings because I've been selfish. I can't believe I'm saying all this to a complete stranger.
You don't have to share anything that makes you uncomfortable.
Chloe: No, I need to. I need to get this off my chest.
[Sighs] I'm a slut. There, I said it.
Kate: Chloe risked her life for me, victor.
Victor: So you remind me hourly.
Kate: Because you don't seem to get it.
Victor: What I get is that you're much more forgiving than I am.
Kate: Everyone is more forgiving than you, because you are a curmudgeonly old bastard with a heart of stone.
Victor: [Chuckles] Is that why you're so devoted to me?
Kate: Yeah. I am devoted to you. Aside from the fact that you are judgmental and you are curmudgeonly, I do know that you are a good man.
Victor: You seem to be in high spirits today.
Kate: Yeah, I am.
Victor: Daniel? Could he be the reason?
Kate: You know, I think I -- I think I distanced myself from him when I was sick because I felt like I couldn't offer him what he needed, because I knew what he had been through with his wife and I didn't want him to have to go through that again with me.
Victor: But you still care for him.
Kate: I do.
Victor: Well, then, you should tell him.
Kate: I should. I will.
Daniel: You know, Chloe and I will not be ashamed of anything we've done.
Maggie: [Chuckles] Wow. You are even more despicable than I thought. Hurting so many people, not even be ashamed -- Lucas, Kate. You do realize you're gonna need to tell her, as well. I should warn you -- hell hath no fury like Kate Roberts scorned.
Chloe: I've made such a mess of things. See, there are these two men -- one of them I was engaged to and the other one...well, I slept with him. I don't even know how it happened. I tried to end it over and over again, but I couldn't. So instead, I broke off my engagement.
And you're conflicted. Do you think maybe you made a mistake?
Chloe: Well, a part of me is still very much in love with my fiancé -- ex-fiancé. But I just don't know what to do. And maybe it's not even my decision to make anymore. All I know is that this is all my fault, the way that things have turned out. And if anyone deserves to wind up alone, it's me.
Melanie: Hi, I'm Melanie Layton. I'm Max Brady's little sister.
Lucas: Right, right. The little spitfire that's crashing with my aunt Maggie.
Melanie: That's me.
Lucas: Well, very nice to meet you, but I'm a little busy right now.
Melanie: Yeah, you look busy.
Lucas: What do you want?
Melanie: Uh, I just -- I need some advice.
Lucas: You -- look, um... floss, all right? Floss before you go to bed. That's about the only advice I have for you.
Melanie: Wow. Move over, jerry Seinfeld.
Lucas: Listen, I am the last person you want to take advice from. Please.
Melanie: Please, Lucas? I'll buy your drink.
Lucas: Why don't you leave me the hell alone? Can you do that for me?
Melanie: Wow. Uh, yeah. You don't have to be rude about it. Jerk.
Lucas: Hey, I got ears. I heard that.
Melanie: Yeah, well, I said it loud.
Philip: That's messed up, talking to E.J. Behind my back.
Brady: Hold up, wait. You don't think that I was -- the fuels project?
Philip: No, the Kioto accords. Yes, the fuels project. How stupid do you think I am?
Brady: Philip, I didn't say one word about that to him.
Philip: I know you think you want to prove something to my father, but you will not do it at my expense.
Brady: Hey, hey. I don't have anything to prove. We have been down this road. We have analyzed this. Granddad is always gonna be tougher on you because you're his son. That's the way it works.
Philip: Don't you tell me how it works. Don't tell me how anything works.
Brady: I'm not trying to tell you anything.
Philip: I don't care what you're trying to do or say. If you don't back off from my project, you're the one who's gonna be looking for a new job.
Pete: One bloody Mary.
Lucas: Thank you. Don't do it, Lucas. Don't do it. You don't need this. You don't need this drink. You don't need this drink. Don't take it, don't take it.
[Sighs] I'll call Maggie. She's my sponsor. That's what she's there for.
Chloe: Please forgive me.
Chloe: Just take it.
Lucas: I don't want to take it. I gave it to you for a reason.
Lucas: Remember when you took this off and it fell into the river and I dove in and I got it? And we swore -- we swore you'd never take it off again, didn't we?
Chloe: I'm so sorry, Lucas.
Melanie: Hey, Mrs. Horton.
Melanie: You okay?
Maggie: Mm-hmm. Just trying to avoid another headache.
Melanie: I'm sorry.
Melanie: Good luck with that.
Maggie: [Chuckles] Thanks.
Melanie: Speaking of headache...
Maggie: Sorry, what was that?
Melanie: ...I met the infamous Lucas Horton at the pub.
Melanie: Interesting guy.
Maggie: Um, did he seem okay?
Melanie: No, actually. He kind of bugged me out a little bit, to be honest.
Maggie: What happened?
Melanie: Well, he was really rude to me, and then he shooed me off like a fly. And then he ordered a bloody Mary at like 8:30 in the morning, not that there is anything wrong with that.
Maggie: Back up a minute. He ordered a bloody Mary? Are you positive?
Melanie: Yeah. Why?
Kate: There you are. Bad time?
Daniel: No. No, no.
Kate: Good. Because I was wondering if you'd like to get a drink after your shift and, um -- I don't know -- maybe go to your place. Oh. Bad idea?
Daniel: I just don't know why you would want to do that.
Kate: I want to tell you something. What's wrong?
Daniel: Well, there's -- there's something I need to tell you.
Kate: You got the results. Oh, my God. Is it bad news?
So, I guess I was meant to walk through this park at exactly this time.
Chloe: I feel really lucky that you did, father. And I feel so much better opening up to you, not that I have any idea what I'm gonna do now.
Well, if you'd like some advice.
I think I know exactly what you need to do.
Philip: Answer the door, damn it! E.J.! Answer the door!
E.J.: All right, big man, why don't you just keep your voice down?
Philip: You son of a bitch. You son of a bitch!
E.J.: Would you keep your voice down?
Philip: You're using Melanie to try to steal the fuels project from Titan.
E.J.: I have absolutely no idea what you're talking about.
Philip: The hell you don't. It's over, DiMera. The jig is up.
E.J.: [Chuckles] "The jig"?
Philip: Yeah, we are going to settle this right here, right now.
Chelsea: I just don't want you to give up on him yet, 'cause I know that he really, really likes you.
Tony: You're about to start a war with the Kiriakis family. You regard that as nothing.
Lucas: Tell me. I can handle it.
Maggie: Chloe is having an affair.
