Melanie: Lose your dance partner, Philip?

Philip: Subtle, Mel. Very subtle.

Melanie: You don't think I had anything to do with that, do you?

Philip: Didn't you?

Melanie: Well, if I did, you should be flattered, right? That you can drive me to extremes like that?

Philip: Hmm. Melanie, driving you to extremes is a very short trip.

Lucas: I checked in front of the restaurant. I checked the parking lot. Absolutely no sign of Chloe.

Kate: Why don't you call her again?

Lucas: Because I've called her like a hundred times, all right? Her phone's turned off. It goes straight to voicemail. Something's not right. This isn't like her.

Kate: No. It's not like Daniel either. There's a phone at the hospital. I don't know why he wouldn't have gotten in touch with me.

Lucas: Well, why don't you try to give him a call?

Kate: I think I will. Hopefully, I'll have better luck than you did.

Chloe: Ow, oh!

Daniel: Well, at the very least, it's sprained. Let's get you to the hospital to make sure.

Chloe: No, I'm going to be fine, ok? Oh, ow!

Daniel: Yeah, you're not gonna walk on it like that.

Chloe: No. Oh, God!

Daniel: Ok, all right, that settles it.

Rafe: Sami, away from the window.

Sami: I'm just watching the fireworks.

Rafe: Yeah, and if someone sees you, it'll be the last fireworks you ever see. Now, come on.

Sami: Ok, God. We can't have any fun on New Year's Eve?

Rafe: Oh, we can have fun, just not near the window. Here.

Sami: No, no, thank you.

Rafe: Oh, come on. It's non-alcoholic. A little cider.

Sami: I don't want any.

Rafe: Listen, you don't have to drink it. You just raise the glass, and I'll say something, and we'll have a little --

[Sami takes the glass and flings it against the wall]

 Rafe: Toast.

E.J.: Brady.

Brady: Hey.

E.J.: Something I can do for you?

Brady: Isn't there supposed to be a party here?

E.J.: Brilliant.

Brady: Doesn't sound like a lot of reveling going on.

E.J.: Party's canceled. Nicole obviously didn't tell you.

Brady: No, she didn't tell me.

E.J.: Well, I apologize.

Brady: It's all right. No harm done. I -- I got millions of parties to go to anyway, so it's fine.

E.J.: Lucky you.

Brady: Nicole around at all?

E.J.: No, evidently she also has millions of parties to go to. Evidently, she obviously doesn't want to spend it with me.

Nicole: Hang on, Dr. Baker. Ugh, Rafe, that sleaze, finally finds me the perfect pregnant woman, and my car decides to go south. Ah, God! Ring, damn it. Ring. Ring. Not there yet. No!

[As fireworks explode in the sky, Daniel's phone rings]

Melanie: Happy New Year!

Stephanie: So, you guys having a good time?

Philip: (Sighs)

Melanie: The best. Hey, you got that stain out of your dress for the most part. You're going to make that clumsy moron pay for your dry cleaning bill, right? The guy shouldn't be allowed out at night.

Stephanie: Uh, no big deal, Melanie. I mean, it was an accident after all, wasn't it?

Melanie: Well, it's your dime.

Stephanie: I'm sorry. Is it just me or did I miss something between you two?

Philip: As a matter of fact, you did.

Maggie: Hey, you two. Where's Chloe and Daniel?

Lucas: We're not too sure.

Maggie: Oh, is everything ok?

Kate: Well, we don't really know, because they never showed up?

Maggie: Well, that's odd.

Lucas: More than odd.

Kate: I just called Daniel's cell, and it went to voicemail, so --

Maggie: Well, you know what? Maybe he was summoned into emergency surgery. I'm sure there's a reasonable explanation.

Kate: I think I'm going to call the hospital directly. Maybe he came in.

Lucas: How about Chloe? How do I find her?

Chloe: Oh, uh! Don't touch me, it's ok.

Daniel: No, I'm just trying to steady you. Are you all right?

Chloe: Yeah, I'll manage.

Daniel: Ok. I'll call Dr. Whitaker and see if he can get us an exam room. That was Kate that was calling. She probably wondered what happened to me.

Chloe: I'm sure Lucas is worried out of his mind, too. You know what, let's just go.

Daniel: Yeah, yeah. We'll call Kate and Lucas on the way to the hospital and explain everything then.

Chloe: Not everything.

Brady: So you can't find Nicole, huh?

E.J.: No.

Brady: Did you try her cell?

E.J.: Brady, this is the woman who's carrying my unborn child. Yes, I tried her cell phone. It goes to voicemail.

Brady: Well, that's something.

E.J.: Is it? Is it really?

Brady: Well, if you don't mind me asking you, E.J. Was there a reason? Why would she take off on New Year's Eve?

E.J.: It's my fault. I'm the reason she left.

Sami: Rafe, I'm really sorry, ok. I shouldn't have done this.

Rafe: It's ok. It's my fault. I should have gone with the plastic.

Sami: Thank you for being so understanding.

Rafe: As long as I'm not on the receiving end, it's all good.

Sami: Um, well, I'll totally pay for the glass.

Rafe: I'll write you up an invoice.

Sami: [Chuckles] Yeah, I'm sure you're going to add it to my tab.

Rafe: Hm-hmm. Listen, Sami, I understand you being upset. I know it's gotta be difficult for you being here on New Year's.

Sami: What about you? This can't be easy on you either, right? Here you are on New Year's Eve, cleaning up broken glass after me and stuck here with me. I'm sure there's people you'd rather be with.

Rafe: Well, it is what it is.

Sami: You mean, you're not sorry you're here?

Lucas: Hey, how is she?

Daniel: Well, X-rays just came in. Nothing fractured, nothing broken, just a sprain.

Kate: Ah, that's good news.

Daniel: Yeah, they're wrapping her ankle, but she should be able to walk.

Kate: We were worried sick about you.

Lucas: Yeah, when either of you didn't show up at the party, we feared the worst.

Daniel: Well, now you can rest either.

Kate: You are such a lifesaver over and over again.

Lucas: Yes, you are. Thanks for bringing her to the hospital. My debt to you keeps expanding.

Daniel: No, not at all.

Kate: Thank God you were on the pier. What would Chloe have done without you, huh?

Brady: So it's your fault that she left, huh?

E.J.: I had a last-minute emergency involving work. Otherwise, I'd have been here as planned.

Brady: You think she's angry with you.

E.J.: Maybe. I can't think of any other reason that she'd disappear without telling me where she was going.

Brady: So not only did you have to work on New Year's Eve, but you also decided Nicole should be alone.

E.J.: I didn't ask her to cancel the party as you're suggesting. Not that it's any of your business, but I had a very nice surprise planned for her.

[Phone rings]

E.J.: Hello.

Baker: Mr. DiMera. It's Dr. Baker.

E.J.: Where is Nicole. Is she with you?

Baker: No. Actually, I was hoping to speak with her. I tried her phone several times. She's not at home obviously.

E.J.: No, she's not.

Baker: All right, I see. Well, listen, I'll try tomorrow. Thank you for your time.

E.J.: Wait, why don't you give me the message, and I'll relay it to her. It's obviously important for you to be calling at this hour.

Melanie: Oh, you know what, blame me. We just got wrapped up in the spirit of the New Year, since Philip was right there.

Stephanie: So, you're saying what I missed was you kissing Philip?

Philip: No, what you missed was this.

[Philip kisses Stephanie]

Philip: Happy New Year!

Baker: I assure you, Mr. DiMera, there's nothing to worry about.

E.J.: Just tell me why you are calling and what is going on with Nicole and our baby?

Baker: I was simply returning her call, that's all.

E.J.: At this hour? This could not have waited until the morning?

Baker: I was in delivery the entire night. This is the first time I've gotten a chance to call.

E.J.: Evidently.

Baker: And I automatically return all the calls, and Nicole was on top of the list, since she called like 30 times.

E.J.: She called you how many times?

Baker: I exaggerate, of course. Listen, I'm sorry to bother you. Just tell Nicole I called.

E.J.: Wait, Dr. Baker.

Brady: Is everything cool?

E.J.: What do you think?

Brady: I think I'll get going. Good luck finding Nicole.

E.J.: Thank you.

[Brady leaves]

E.J.: Where are you, Nicole?

Brady: Why is Dr. Baker calling Nicole?

Melanie: (Sighs) I think you guys are so cute -- like a supercouple -- like Brangelina -- or maybe it's Brad and Jen. I haven't really decided.

Stephanie: Well, don't break a pop culture sweat trying to figure it out.

Melanie: Ohh, she's a keeper, Philip.

Philip: Try to be nice. This is supposed to be a celebration.

Melanie: Sure, I'm just glad a little spill didn't ruin the evening.

Stephanie: Mmm, nothing can do that.

Melanie: To the new year then whatever it may bring. It should be interesting, us three working together at Titan, right?

Stephanie: (Sighs)

Melanie: Fun, fun!

Lucas: So, how long before I get to take her home?

Daniel: She's all set to go.

Lucas: Good deal. I'll get her then.

Daniel: All right.

Kate: You know, I would like to give them some time alone. Do you mind giving me a lift home?

Daniel: No, not at all.

Kate: Maybe we can get in a little alone time ourselves.

Daniel: Maybe. I'm sorry I couldn't be at Chez Rouge to help you ring in the New Year.

Kate: Oh, that's ok. I'm just grateful that you were there for Chloe. That's the important thing.

Daniel: Yeah.

[Daniel recalls almost kissing Chloe]

Lucas: Oh, Chloe. I'm so glad it wasn't serious.

Chloe: You're marrying a klutz, you know.

Lucas: No, I'm marrying an angel.

Chloe: [Chuckles] Can we get out of here? We're here way too often. I hate this place.

Lucas: Yeah, yeah. Daniel said you're good to go. How does your ankle feel?

Chloe: Hmm. It hurts, but I'll manage. I'm sorry for ruining your New Year's.

Lucas: Our first together as an engaged couple.

Chloe: Yeah, I was really looking forward to it.

Lucas: Well, the New Year's isn't over yet.

Nicole: One bar. One stupid bar is all I need. You know what? Next time, I will just buy a flare gun with unlimited stupid texting. Oh, thank God. Oh, my gosh. Oh, oh, you're a lifesaver. You have no idea. I have been stranded here for like eternity, and I don't know, something fell out of my engine, or maybe it was my entire engine. If you'd just give me a lift to where I'm going --

Brady: Let me guess. Dr. Baker's clinic?

Nicole: How did you find me here?

Brady: I followed the trail of breadcrumbs that you left.

Nicole: Ah, ha. How did you know about Dr. Baker?

Brady: Remember that little soiree that you and E.J. had planned to ring in the New Year that you forgot to uninvite me from?

Nicole: You didn't show up to the house, did you? Please tell me you didn't.

Brady: Yeah, I did. I RSVP'd, so yeah, I did.

Nicole: Sorry.

Brady: It's ok. While I was talking to E.J., who by the way, is worried as hell about you, Dr. Baker called for you.

Nicole: He spoke to E.J.?

Brady: Yeah, at some length.

Nicole: Oh, my God, please. He better not have made him suspicious. No, please, tell me my life isn't over.

Brady: As far as I can tell, not yet.

Nicole: So Dr. Baker --

Brady: Said nothing to E.J. about you faking the pregnancy, that I'm aware of, ok? But I figured that if Dr. Baker is calling you at this hour, you must be up to something crazy, so yeah, that answers your first question. I was on my way to the clinic to try and find you.

Nicole: Well, I'm glad you did.

Brady: Would you tell me what's going on here?

Nicole: This is crazy. Crazy and creepy and awful, but this is the answer to my prayers.

Brady: Explain.

Nicole: Dr. Baker is a baby broker.

Brady: He's a --

Nicole: Wait, just listen. He called me because he has a pregnant woman who is exactly the right amount of months along. And she is willing to give me her baby. And that is where I was going when my car stupid car broke down.

Brady: Nicole, come on.

Nicole: Please, no lectures. I am begging you, just take me to the clinic. Now, please.

Sami: Come on, you've got to admit you must be miserable stuck here with me on New Year's Eve. I mean, if I were you, I would be mad as hell.

Rafe: Well, luckily, you're not me.

Sami: Seriously, there's got to be some disappointment, right?

Rafe: Whatever. I mean, if I wasn't here working on this case, I would be working with another witness on ICE, trailing someone. Who knows?

Sami: What, you're serious? I mean, during Christmas, New Year's Eve?

Rafe: I always volunteer to work on the holidays.

Sami: You're kidding.

Rafe: No.

Sami: That's so sad.

Rafe: It is what it is.

Sami: Well, what about your family? Don't you want to go home to them?

Rafe: I see what you're doing.

Sami: What am I doing? We're having a conversation.

Rafe: You're trying to pump me for personal information.

Sami: I am not trying to pump you for anything, Rafe. I was asking a simple question.

Rafe: I'm gonna have some more of that cider.

Sami: Are you serious? We've been living together all this time, and you're not going to let me know anything about your actual life?

Rafe: Are you sure you don't want any of this? Because I'm telling you, it is delicious.

Sami: No I don't. You know what this is? It's because you're a man.

Rafe: What?

Sami: That is exactly why you won't open up. Because you think it's girly or something to talk about feelings and family and things that really matter. But You know what, I think that that is why men die younger. Because you keep it all trapped inside of you, all bottled up, and you don't let any of it go, so you end up exploding, or having bad blood pressure.

Rafe: My blood pressure's fine actually. It's kind of low.

Sami: I am being serious about this. I just don't understand how you can be so --

Rafe: Focused?

Sami: One track-minded?

Rafe: Actually, we're a lot alike in that way.

Sami: Are you kidding me? No way. I am not like you at all. I am not a workaholic. My family is the most important thing in the world to me.

Rafe: Okay, maybe not in a work, per se, but in life. We're both very goal-oriented. I mean, when you have a goal, you stay focused on it. In fact, you may even surpass me in that department.

Sami: I sense an example coming on.

Rafe: You know, it's funny that you mention that because one does come to mind rather quickly.

Sami: I thought we agreed not to talk about Sister Teresa or the convent or my unborn child, because I can't talk to her, I can't see her. I can't do anything without your help. So that's it, end of discussion.

Rafe: End of discussion, yes. End of scheming, probably not.

Sami: I resent the implication.

Rafe: You're still trying to find a way to get it out of me, aren't you? Yeah!

Philip: You know, I can't believe it's 2009.

Stephanie: (Chuckles)

Philip: Hey, hey. Melanie got to you, didn't she?

Stephanie: No. Hmm. I couldn't care less about her. You should know that by now. She's annoying, that's all. I don't like her. I don't think about her. She doesn't mean anything to me. I just --

Philip: Just what?

Stephanie: I just wonder why you still seem to fall for her little games. I mean, why didn't you just walk away from her when she kissed you.

Philip: Well, first of all, Melanie didn't kiss me.

Stephanie: Oh, I saw what happened.

Philip: What you saw was her whispering into my ear or making some stupid point, stirring it up, I don't know.

Stephanie: What about you?

Philip: What do you mean?

Stephanie: Were you trying to do the same thing with me?

Philip: I don't follow.

Stephanie: When you kissed me, was it because you really wanted to, or because you were trying to prove a point to Melanie.

Nicole: Wait here.

Brady: Ok.

Nicole: I need to do this in private. Wish me luck, ok?

Brady: Ok.

Nicole: Dr. Baker? Where is she? Where is the mother?

Baker: It's too late, Nicole. It's too late. She's gone.

Nicole: Too late? What? I can't be.

Baker: We waited. We waited. When you didn't show up at the appointed time, she just --

Nicole: What, what? No, no.

Baker: She changed her mind. I'm sorry. She left.

Nicole: No, but -- but my car broke down. I tried calling you. I tried calling you like 50,000 times. You must have known I was on my way.

Baker: How was I supposed to know that?

Nicole: Well, I didn't have any reception.

Baker: I'm sorry, Nicole. Life is cruel sometimes.

Nicole: Oh, you don't know what cruel is Baker, but you're about to find out unless you call that mother back and explain to her what happened.

Baker: It's too late.

Nicole: No, this isn't how it ends.

Baker: She's gone, all right. The deal is off. She's not going to give her baby to you.

Nicole: No. No, it can't be. That was my baby. It was my baby. [Sobbing]

Brady: I saw Baker leave.

Nicole: He didn't see you, did he?

Brady: No. Are you ok?

Nicole: Do I look ok?

Brady: What happened.

Nicole: The mother had a change of heart. She's gone, and it's over.

Brady: Oh, God, Nicole. I'm sorry. I know you must feel --

Nicole: Don't tell me how I feel, Brady. You, you, you haven't the first clue.

Brady: You know what, you're right. I'm sorry. I did not mean to --

Nicole: It's like going through the heartache all over again. It's the same feeling. And I can't do this any more.

Brady: What are you going to do now?

Nicole: I don't know. I don't know. I don't know. I guess I should -- I guess I have to tell E.J. everything. It'll be the end of us and his love for me, but I have to do it. [Crying]

Brady: Shh, shh.

Daniel: Ok, what -- what is this? Is this champagne?

Kate: That is champagne. I called Henderson from the hospital and asked him to break out some of the best champagne, because we didn't get to celebrate at Chez Rouge, but there isn't any reason that we can't have a little celebration now. What, is there a problem?

Chloe: Lucas, you really didn't have to do this.

Lucas: I know -- I know I didn't have to.

Chloe: I would have been perfectly happy going back to the cabin. Thank you.

Lucas: Oh, come on. Are you kidding me? It's New Year's Eve. There's no way we're going back to the cabin.

Chloe: There's no one here.

Lucas: That's very good, Chloe. You're right. This place is closed. Do you realize how late it is?

Chloe: Oh, yeah.

Lucas: Well, luckily, I have connections. I know people in high places. Maggie agreed to open for me and my future bride.

Chloe: Just for the two of us, huh?

Lucas: Yep. Our first New Year's Eve together as a couple. And we are going to make it memorable.

Philip: So what, you thought that my kissing you was some sort of manipulation?

Stephanie: Melanie was trying to make me jealous, right? Flirting with you, whispering in your ear, whatever.

Philip: Yeah, so?

Stephanie: So you didn't like that she was playing you to get at me, so in order to prove a point to her, you kissed me. Am I right?

Philip: Actually, it was just a New Year's kiss.

Stephanie: Pretty intense.

Philip: Ah, you're thinking if I was kissing you just for the sake of kissing you, it would have been more -- what's the opposite of intense? Laid back?

Stephanie: Yeah, I guess. But maybe not as passionate. I mean, for being in public.

Philip: Well, that may be true, but -- You know maybe I did, at first, kiss you because I wanted to make a point to Melanie, but once we got into that kiss, I forgot about all that. I forgot about everything and everyone except you.

Stephanie: Really?

Philip: Yeah. And if you don't feel the same way, I think there may be a problem.

Sami: And another thing -- do you know what I hate the most about you?

Rafe: What, that I know you so well?

Sami: No, that you think you know me so well. That you always think you know what I'm up to, what I'm planning, what I'm not planning.

Rafe: And I'm always right.

Sami: You know what you always are? You're always trying to get inside my head. You're always trying to think what I'm thinking next. It's like, it's like, you're psychic or something.

Rafe: Maybe I am.

Sami: Or maybe you're the most annoying person on the planet.

Rafe: Well, if you're not going to look after yourself?

Sami: Ok, Agent Mindreader, what's next? What's my Plan B? Let's hear it.

Rafe: Well, as far as I can tell, you don't have a Plan B.

Sami: Oh, really?

Rafe: Doesn't mean that you wont' come up with one. Just means, that you haven't yet. But I suppose we should get ready for bed.

Sami: Yeah, right. since we've solved the world's problems. Good night.

Rafe: Good night. Good night, Sami. Sami, to answer your question. I'm not sorry I'm here.

Kate: Actually, I wanted to do this at the restaurant, but I was thinking this is even better. To you, Daniel, for never giving up on me. And I owe you everything.

Daniel: You owe me nothing, Kate.

Kate: Shhh. Don't ruin this with your self-effacing nonsense, all right. One time a year, we can be unabashedly spontaneous, so don't ruin this moment.

Daniel: I was just saying I couldn't help you if you didn't want to help yourself, because you are tenacious. To you.

Kate: Hmm. I wish I could ask you to stay. I could, you know. I could, but what's the sense really?

Daniel: I understand.

Kate: Not that it wouldn't be lovely to lie side by side.

Daniel: You do not have to explain anything to me.

Kate: I'm just thinking that it would -- it would feel so awkward if you were to stay. Especially since before I was ill, I felt -- I felt such desire for you.

Daniel: You have been through a lot, and you do not have to apologize to me.

Kate: I will get those feelings back, won't I?

Daniel: Yes, yes, you will.

Chloe: I still feel bad.

Lucas: Why?

Chloe: Because I wasn't there for the big New Year's countdown. I wasn't there for the kiss.

Lucas: That's right. You weren't, but we can fix that. I've got an idea. 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 -- Happy New Year!

Chloe: Happy New Year!

E.J.: Hey.

Nicole: I'm sorry I took off like that, E.J. I should have called and told you where I was. It was incredibly thoughtless, and I hate that I made you worry.

E.J.: It's fine. You're upset with me.

Nicole: Just let me finish, ok?

E.J.: Of course.

Nicole: This pregnancy has made me crazy, and I know you know that. And I have done things that I am not proud of. But when it comes to you, I know that I've played this push-pull game --

E.J.: Oh, sweetheart.

Nicole: E.J. Wait, wait. Everything I've done I've done because I love you. And I want more than anything for us to be a family.

E.J.: That's the only thing that I want, too, darling.

Nicole: I know that we really can't be a family. I understand that now.

E.J.: What are you talking about?

Nicole: I can't keep doing what I'm doing. You need to know the truth.

E.J.: I already know the truth.

Melanie: This is pathetic. Come on, Melanie, no pity party. Happy New Year's to me.

Stephanie: Okay, the truth.

Philip: Yeah.

Stephanie: The kiss, it wasn't the same for me.

Philip: Okay.

Stephanie: Do you understand why?

Philip: Because you thought it was contrived, that I was trying to make some point to Melanie.

Stephanie: But I wasn't totally wrong. You even admitted it.

Philip: Well, what about the part that I said kissing you was the highlight of my year?

Stephanie: I don't remember you saying that.

Philip: Well, I'm saying it now. Not helping, huh?

Stephanie: No. But --

Philip: What?

Stephanie: I do have a suggestion -- a way that we can straighten out this misunderstanding or whatever.

Philip: I am open to suggestions.

Stephanie: I don't know if you'll go for it.

Philip: Try me.

Stephanie: You'll have to kiss me again.

Philip: I think I can handle that.

Stephanie: Are you sure?

Philip: Yeah, I am.

[Stephanie and Philip kiss]

Nicole: You know the truth?

E.J.: I've -- I've known all along. It just took me a while to put it in perspective.

Nicole: Ok.

E.J.: Nicole, you gave me this tremendous gift of love, and I took it for granted. And I took your sacrifices for granted.

Nicole: My sacrifices?

E.J.: You came into my home And you came into my life, into my family. You never complained. You never judged me for being a DiMera, and you did all of this for our baby.

Nicole: But you did the same thing for me. You brought me into your family without judging or condemning. And that's all I've ever wanted -- to be a part of a family.

E.J.: I know. I've been very insensitive. I certainly shouldn't have gone off to work this evening and left you alone on New Year's Eve.

Nicole: But I understand, E.J., it was important.

E.J.: Maybe. But it wasn't as important as you or our baby. I can't tell you how worried I was when I couldn't get a hold of you. And I was just terrified thinking of what might have happened to you. And it just reinforced -- I can't imagine my life without you.

Nicole: (Sobs)

E.J.: Will you marry me?

Nicole: Yes, yes, yes. I will marry you.

[Unable to sleep, Sami thinks back]

Roman: There we go. Okay.

Sami: Oh, my God. I can't believe it. My babies, Ali and Johnny. How did you do this?

Rafe: Thank your dad.

Sami: Dad? Daddy, you did this?

Roman: Hey, sweetheart, Merry Christmas.

Sami: I love you. I love you all so much.

Roman: We love you, too, honey.

Sami: Argh!

Rafe: What's wrong? You can't sleep?

Sami: I can't stop thinking about my kids, worrying about them? Worrying about E.J., too.

Nicole: I love you.

[E.J. and Nicole kiss]

On the next "Days of Our Lives" --

Melanie: Stephanie, Phillip is going to chew you up and spit you out.

Phillip : You have a problem with me dating Stephanie?

EJ: What's going on? Where were you?

Sami: Oh, my God! Rafe! Rafe! What's happening?
