Nicole: This is my favorite thing. I was -- I was gonna show E.J. up at the lodge, but...

Brady: It's a locket.

Nicole: Mm-hmm. I, uh... I was gonna put the baby's first picture in it.

Brady: That's really sweet.

Nicole: Swim lessons and car pools and field trips. I can't wait. I mean, my [Sighs] my parents...

[Monitor beeping rapidly]

Nicole: ...They never did that for me, but it's gonna be -- it's gonna be different with this baby. God, what's happening?

Brady: Nicole, hey. Nicole? Nicole. Hey, hey, hey, stay with me. Nicole? W--

Dr. Baker: Get out of here now. Get out.

Brady: Okay.

Pete: Here you go. What, you making sure they spelled your name right?

Philip: No one ever does.

Pete: Well, does it really matter? You're still the hero of the story.

Philip: The hero that got everything wrong till the last possible moment.

Chelsea: There you are.

Officer: Sorry, lady. You got to go.

Chelsea: Uh, no. Um, actually, Commander Brady said that it was okay. Thanks. Are you okay?

Nick: I have a headache.

Chelsea: I'm so sorry.

[Telephone rings]

Melanie: Hello? You're kidding, right? Because I almost died falling off of your unsafe balcony and I was told that I could stay in this room, recover, and get my bearings. I have an hour. Thank you for being so sympathetic. Okay, well, I have an hour to find a place to live and a way to pay for it.

John: So, I get shrinked or you don't deal with me.

Marlena: We're liable to use different terminology, but, yeah, that's the idea.

John: That's blackmail.

Marlena: I don't care. Because you know what? I've tried everything to get through to you and nothing works.

John: I just kept you from getting dead. I'm sorry if I was too macho for you while I did it.

Marlena: It's not just that. It's Brady. It's your health.

John: It's just because I'm not some new-age, metrosexual naval gazer doesn't mean that I'm self-destructive.

Marlena: We can't do this again. It gets us nowhere, John. Please, l-- look, I-I just think that -- I'm scared that I made the classic therapist egocentric mistake. I thought that I could help you.

John: Well, tell me, doctor, how is it going to help me for me to lose the only person that I am capable of caring for?

Marlena: I think that it might get your attention. I think my being in your life enables you.

John: That's jargon. You're better than that.

Marlena: All right, fine. You need help. And unless you get it, you are out of my life.

Dr. Baker: If we're gonna save this baby, we have to get her stabilized now.

Stewardess: Would you like anything else, Mr. DiMera? We'll be landing soon.

E.J.: No, I'm good. Thank you. Oh, I wouldn't bother my Father. He's in the back conferencing with a gentleman from Argentina who screwed everything up, so he's not in a very good mood.

Stewardess: It doesn't seem to bother you that the trip was canceled.

E.J.: Oh, no, not in the least. I get to see my family faster.

Stewardess: Oh. Will they be waiting for you at the airport?

E.J.: No, no, no, no. This is gonna be a big surprise.

[Monitor beeping rapidly]

Nicole: E.J. Our baby.

Brady: Well, what's going on?

Dr. Baker: Her blood pressure's gone through the roof. We're upping the magnesium sulfate to lower it and stop the contractions.

Brady: Then she'll be all right, right?

Dr. Baker: We hope so.

Brady: And the baby?

Dr. Baker: If we can't stop these contractions, she'll lose it.

Brady: It's gonna kill her.

Dr. Baker: Listen to me, why don't you wait out in the corridor? And I suggest you get in touch with the father.

Nicole: Please... save my baby, please.

Chelsea: So, you said that you have a headache. Did they give you anything?

Nick: Why did you say that to me?

Chelsea: What?

Nick: That you were sorry. How can you be sorry for the things I did?

Chelsea: Because I know you and I know that you're not that kind of person that would act like that.

Nick: Seems like we have empirical proof that I am exactly that kind of person. I mean, don't you think, Chelsea, after I killed two people, it's time for me to start facing facts? You didn't want me. Melanie didn't want me.

Chelsea: I did. I loved you.

Nick: Maybe. But not for long. I'd like to be in love forever. [Sniffles] But you know what I think?

Chelsea: No. What?

Nick: I think that it works better with girls before they really get to know me.

Chelsea: That's not true.

Nick: It is. I keep thinking that...if I can take care of them and keep bad things from happening to them that they'll like that. They'll like me. But they don't.

Chelsea: It's just I think because you care a little too much.

Nick: And because I do... wrong things. I sent Melanie that note. It really scared her.

Chelsea: I know.

Nick: I just wanted to make her need me so I could...take care of her.

Chelsea: Does she know that?

Nick: No. You know what? I think this is good. I'll go away, and I won't be able to hurt anyone again.

Chelsea: You haven't hurt...

Nick: I have. A lot. This is a good thing, Chelsea. I'm...I'm tired. I'm really tired.

Chelsea: Nick, it's like you're giving up.

Nick: No. In that room last night, the way Melanie looked at me, she never wants to talk to me again. And I'm in love with her. What else can I do but give up? Aunt Maggie.

Maggie: Nick. [Crying]

Nick: It's good you're here.

Maggie: Are you all right?

Officer: Ma'am, I'm sorry. You can't touch the prisoner.

Nick: I will be if you help me.

Maggie: Anything, honey. Anything. Anything.

Nick: It's about Melanie.

Melanie: Administrative Assistant -- competitive pay, room for advancement, must start A.S.A.P. Good, because I need to start A.S.A.P. Let's get the particulars. Titan enterprises. Well, they think big, just like me.

Nurse: Blood pressure 180/110.

Nicole: That's good, isn't it? I'm better, aren't I?

Dr. Baker: Certainly better than before.

Nicole: So the baby's okay? This is over?

Dr. Baker: We're working on that, okay? Now, what you can do to help is you can just relax and be calm and breathe deep. We need you both stabilized.

Nicole: There's something you're not telling me.

Dr. Baker: I'm telling you everything I know, all right? We stopped the preterm labor. And we hope there's no damage to the placenta.

Nicole: You hope?

Dr. Baker: Now, that's why it's important for you to stay calm and still. You don't want to start up labor again.

Nicole: Okay.

Nurse: Doctor. [Monitor beeping rapidly]

Nicole: No! [Grunts] I'm having another contraction. I can't stop it. Ah!

John: Just like that, huh?

Marlena: No, damn it. Not just like that. I have thought about this. I have agonized over this. I will not explain myself to you. I will not even engage you until I know that somebody is monitoring your progress.

John: You mean monitoring me.

Marlena: One of my thesis advisors is a wonderful doctor named Kenneth Taylor.

John: Doctor? Shrink?

Marlena: Psychiatrist. I haven't kept up with him personally, but professionally he has been published widely because of his work with patients with abnormal brain patterns.

John: I see. And I sit on his couch and I talk about my childhood. Oh, I can't. I don't remember.

Marlena: You know what really bothers me? The John that I knew would never be deliberately dense. Psychiatry is a scientific field. If it makes you feel any better to condescend to it, well, that's up to you. But this is the one person in the world who might actually be able to help you, and you, my dear, do need help.

John: Yeah, well, I'll think about it.

Marlena: Okay. Well, take your time. I've sent him your files.

John: You what?

Marlena: And until I know that you are seeing him...

John: No, you can't do that. That's a violation.

Marlena: ...I will have nothing to do with you. His card. The ball, as they say.

Nick: Have you seen Melanie?

Maggie: No, honey. Not today.

Nick: She doesn't have anybody to look after her. I did that.

Maggie: I'm sure that she'll fi--

Nick: You're gonna say she's gonna be okay, but you know that's not true. She doesn't have any friends. She doesn't have any family. She doesn't have any money.

Chelsea: She has Max.

Nick: You don't know the things that he said about her. She can't trust him.

Chelsea: Nick, I don't want to upset you, okay? But I know that Max cares for Melanie. I was with him when --

Nick: When she was with me. I scared her. I scared her really bad. That's why...you need to let her stay with you.

Maggie: Huh?

Nick: I have to know somebody's looking after her. I have to know that. It's bad enough that I have to live with the fact that she hates me. If I can live with it. That one's still up in the air, you know. I mean, how do you wake up in the morning knowing --

Chelsea: Nick.

Maggie: Shh.

Nick: You have to let her stay with you. You have to.

Nicole: Ugh, E.J.!

Dr. Baker: Just try to calm down.

Nicole: Call E.J.!

Nurse: Okay, I'll go find him. I'll go call. She wants the father.

Brady: I've been trying to call him. They won't give me his number. How is she doing? Oh, my God. Um...all right, I got to find her cellphone because his number's probably in there.

Nicole: No! I can't stop it! I can't make it stop! [Sobbing] I can't stop it. Please, help. [Sobbing]

John: Haven't you just crossed some kind of line? Handing out my files without speaking with me first?

Marlena: You're proving my point. We're having a conversation about saving your life and you want to turn this into some sort of an ethical discussion.

John: Ethics used to matter to you.

Marlena: Your life used to matter to you. John, the headaches -- they're getting worse, aren't they? You won't even tell me about it. Look, there's an alarm going off in your head and you won't even acknowledge it.

John: You just want to run my life. That's all.

Marlena: No, I don't. I want you to run your life. It's entirely up to you if you choose not to do that. Well, it is up to you, but I won't stand by and watch what happens, so you may take the card and leave or you may leave. Either way, it's over now. [Knock on door]

John: The door.

Marlena: It'll wait.

John: Oh, please, come in. Perfect timing.

Maggie: Sorry?

Marlena: Maggie, this is not a very good time.

Maggie: Marlena, please. You have to help me. It's about Nick.

Chelsea: I know that you feel guilty about all of this.

Nick: If I didn't, I'd be a sociopath.

Chelsea: Nick, you need to understand that there were other factors that went into this here. I mean, the pain pills --

Nick: You don't say Melanie. Don't say that this was her fault.

Chelsea: I won't.

Nick: You don't know her. Everybody thinks they know her, and they don't.

Chelsea: I know that you thought you were in love with her.

Nick: I am in love with her. And I'm never gonna love anybody else.

Chelsea: You don't know that.

Nick: What, you think I'm crazy? You think I don't actually love her? It doesn't -- it doesn't matter, okay? [Sniffles] I can't change what I did, and I can't change the way that she feels about me.

Chelsea: So that's what's really bothering you. It's not -- it's not what's gonna happen to you. It's how she feels about you.

Nick: Yes. They're gonna send me to prison, and they should send me to prison.

Chelsea: Don't say that.

Nick: But that's not as bad as knowing what Melanie thinks about me. I don't know how long I can stand that.

Melanie: [Clears throat] Hello, I'm Melanie Layton, and I am the answer to all of your -- all of your prayers.

Philip: We'll see about that.

E.J.: Nicole?

Mary: Mr. DiMera.

E.J.: Hi, Mary. How are you? Is Nicole upstairs?

Mary: No, sir, she's not.

E.J.: Is she outside? Is she out?

Mary: I don't know where she is, sir. She never came home.

Dr. Baker: We can't stop the contractions.

Nicole: Oh. My baby. It's too soon. It's too soon.

Marlena: Maggie, I-I was mistaken. This is actually a very good time. John was just leaving.

Maggie: Well, I'm sorry to interrupt, but it is important.

John: I can tell that it is, so I'll leave you two alone. [Door closes]

John: I'll just go into the kitchen, grab a cup a coffee, and clean my gun. Take all the time you need.

Marlena: John.

John: No problem, Blondie. She needs you.

Maggie: Uh...this was a bad time.

Marlena: You know, John and I can resolve this later on. Come, come. Sit down. I know that you're worried about Nick. I-I read the paper this morning.

Maggie: Well, I just came from the police station. He's in terrible shape. I'm scared, Marlena. I'm really scared that he's gonna do something to himself.

Marlena: You and I both know that -- that Bo and Roman will do all they can to make sure that he is closely watched.

Maggie: Yeah.

Marlena: And they can make sure that he has very good professional help. Is Mickey handling this? Okay, have him call me. I will give him the names of some very good people.

Maggie: Thanks. He, uh...Nick asked m-- oh, boy. I feel like this is my fault. I'm supposed to look after him.

Marlena: Maggie, you should get some help yourself. I'm just not sure that I'm the right person to do that for you.

Maggie: No, I suppose. But I need to ask your advice about one thing. Nick wants me to ask Melanie to keep staying with me.

Marlena: You don't want to?

Maggie: I don't like her. I don't like her. I know that what Nick did was very, very wrong and that I'm blaming the victim.

Marlena: Why don't you tell her she can stay with you so you can tell Nick that she's being taken care of? Make sure she knows that it's temporary and she needs to start looking for her own place.

Maggie: I knew you were the right person to talk to. You are so clearheaded.

Marlena: I am clearheaded. That's why my life is so orderly.

Maggie: Well, I better let you go. Thank you. I hope everything works out for you and John.

Marlena: Well, it will, uh, turn out the way it turns out, whatever it ends up being.

Maggie: Well, you know what? Thanks. Never mind.

Marlena: She's gone. Your turn.

Melanie: Don't you own Titan Enterprises?

Philip: Yep.

Melanie: So you have all this money and you still work?

Philip: What a concept. Why don't you sit down? This is a -- this is quite a résumé. Obviously there's a lot I didn't know about you.

Melanie: I was kind of hoping whoever read it wouldn't already know me.

Philip: You mean you didn't graduate cum laude from Sorbonne?

Melanie: Doesn't say that.

Philip: Yeah, yeah, it does, right there.

Melanie: Look, if you're gonna turn me down, can we skip the Zingers, Philip?

Philip: Melanie, I didn't mean to zing you. I, uh -- I was just trying to...

Melanie: Trying to what?

Philip: ...Ease into saying something. I'm -- I know you've been through a terrible time. And I know I didn't make it any easier, and I just -- I hope things get better for you.

Melanie: You mean that?

Philip: Yeah, I do.

Melanie: Then put your money where your mouth is and give me a job.

Philip: I can't do that. [Beep]

E.J.: Hey, sweetheart, it's me. Where are you?

Dr. Baker: There you are. There's someone I'd like you to meet.

Nicole: [Gasps]

Nurse: Here's your mommy. Here's your perfect little girl.

Nicole: Oh, it's a girl. Oh, she's so beautiful. She's so beautiful. Hi.

Nurse: She has your eyes.

Nicole: And her daddy's nose. Hi, pumpkin. Hi. Oh, I love you so much. I do. I do. I love you so much. My princess, huh? I can't believe this. Hi. Look at her eyes. Oh, my God. She's so beautiful. Oh, God.

Brady: I'll call you back. How is she?

Dr. Baker: She's fine. She's fine. We, uh -- we finally have her stabilized.

Brady: And, uh, the baby?

Dr. Baker: The baby didn't make it.

Nicole: Nurse.

Nurse: What is it, honey?

Nicole: Thank you for saving my baby.

Chelsea: He said that you can't have an aspirin until you see the doctor. You can't see the doctor until you talk to --

Nick: Chelsea...a pill's not gonna fix this.

Chelsea: Then what will?

Nick: Something that will never happen.

Chelsea: You don't know that. Oh. It's about Melanie, right?

Nick: What isn't? What I did to Melanie, that's never gonna change. I just wish she could know...I didn't mean to scare her or -- or own her. I just wanted to make her happy.

Chelsea: Well, it all just happened. I mean, maybe if she has time to think about it...

Nick: When we were in that room, when she was trying to get away, I just -- I freaked out. I lost it. All I could think about, "she's not gonna get past that door." And then I saw her look at me and...I saw what she saw. It's like an animal, not a person.

Chelsea: Nick.

Officer: Miss, no touching.

Chelsea: Right, I forgot. Nick [Sniffles] we all know you. That's why it had to have been the pills, you know, because everybody, even Melanie, in their hearts they know that, that wasn't you in the room.

Nick: Maybe they're all wrong and Melanie's the only one who saw who I really am.

Chelsea: Nick, I --

Nick: Why don't you just go, okay?

Chelsea: No. No, I don't want to leave you alone.

Nick: Why, because you feel bad for me? You feel like I'm this stray dog who needs to be taken care of?

Chelsea: No, I don't.

Nick: Chelsea, if you need -- if you need to take care of someone, you should take care of your grandma. She's not a totally lost cause.

Chelsea: Stop.

Officer: Miss, I think maybe you better go now. He's getting a little too worked up.

Nick: He's right. Just go. It's best.

Chelsea: Fine. Then I will see you tomorrow.

Nick: No, Chelsea, I mean it. Just... go, okay?

Chelsea: Can I at least give him a hug?

Nick: No. 'Cause I can't stand up.

Chelsea: What?

Nick: If I stand up, my pants fall down.

Chelsea: What?

Nick: They took my belt, Chelsea.

Melanie: [Chuckles] So, you own the freaking company and you're still not gonna give me a job? Is your mommy not gonna let you or something?

Philip: Melanie, you and I -- look, I'm sorry if I misjudged you, but we don't get along. We couldn't work together.

Melanie: So you're not gonna give me a chance because I remind you that you're not right about everything 24/7?

Philip: Well maybe there's something else I could do for you.

Melanie: I'm gonna stop you there, because this is kind of reminding me of what happened that night in that room when you lead me on just to humiliate me. "Oh, Melanie, I'm just so sorry about everything, but I'm not gonna be able to give you a job. However, may I offer you some condescending charity?"

Philip: Calm down.

Melanie: Don't tell me what to do. I'm down, I'm out, I've been put through hell by a psycho, but I still like me better than you and all your snotty friends, so...

Philip: Melanie.

Maggie: Melanie, I was looking for you.

Melanie: Why, some of your silverware missing?

Maggie: Melanie, no, wait. If you are still looking for a place to stay till you find whatever you're looking for, you can stay with us.

Melanie: You mean that?

Maggie: Of course I do, but, as usual, there is one condition.

E.J.: Yes, I'm looking for a guest that checked in today. Uh, Walker -- Nicole Walker.

Brady: I found her cellphone so I can call the father, but, uh, how do you tell someone this?

Dr. Baker: Are you close with Miss Walker?

Brady: I was.

Dr. Baker: Well, she doesn't know. She's been in and out of consciousness, and it's my job to tell her, but sometimes it's easier if it's not a stranger.

Brady: I'll tell her.

Dr. Baker: It was a baby girl.

Nurse: She's waking up, doctor.

Brady: [Sighs] I do not want to do this.

Nicole: Hi. Brady, I, uh...I had the baby, but I feel asleep. I was dreaming, right? The baby...hasn't been born, has she?

Brady: No.

Nicole: The baby's still okay, isn't she? Where's the doctor? Why isn't the doctor in here?

Brady: The baby, uh, didn't make it. I'm sorry.

Nicole: [Sobbing]

Brady: It's okay.

Nicole: [Sobbing] No. Oh, God. Oh, no. My baby.

Melanie: All right, so, that one condition would be?

Maggie: Well, I don't know if you're aware of it or not, but Mickey will be handling Nick's case. It could become a conflict if you are living with us as his case proceeds, so the condition is this -- it's a temporary situation. You're gonna need to be looking for a permanent place to live almost immediately.

Melanie: I know you're trying to be sweet and I really appreciate it, but just like everybody else, you pretty much think this is my fault, that I'm the one that lead Nick astray.

Maggie: You know what? Maybe we should have two conditions here. We don't talk about Nick or the case and you stay away from him.

Melanie: You really don't have to worry about me going anywhere near Nick. [Keys jingle]

Maggie: Here's a spare key. Please lock up behind yourself when you leave if we're not there.

Melanie: Thank you.

Maggie: I'll see you later at home.

Maggie: Your turn.

Chelsea: Melanie.

Melanie: Oh, and the hits just keep on coming.

Chelsea: I've been looking for you.

Melanie: I'm sorry. I'm late for my book club.

Chelsea: Well, this is important, okay? It's about Nick.

E.J.: Come on, come on, come on.

Man: Mr. DiMera, thank you for holding. I spoke to the bellhop. He said Miss Walker left a couple of hours ago.

E.J.: Thank you.

Man: She was with a young man, apparently. Sorry I can't be of more help.

E.J.: Um, no, thank you. Thank you very much.

Brady: Do you want me to get you anything? Some water or something?

Nicole: My baby -- was it a boy or a girl?

Brady: It was a girl.

Nicole: I thought so. I felt that.

Brady: I'm so sorry.

Nicole: [Sighs] You know, I...I would have done anything for that baby. But th-there was nothing to do. All I could do was just lie there and my -- my body, I couldn't stop it. I couldn't stop...

Brady: I'm sorry. I am so sorry.

Nicole: [Crying] [Door opens]

Nurse: These will help with the pain. Now, when you get home, you should schedule an appointment with you gynecologist, okay?

Nicole: Okay.

Nurse: But I don't want you to worry. There doesn't seem to be any permanent damage to you. There shouldn't be any problem with another pregnancy.

Nicole: Thank you.

[Door opens, closes]

Nicole: God. She was just being nice. God, she doesn't know. She doesn't know that this is a miracle baby. Miracles -- miracles don't happen twice. [Sobbing]

John: So, did you get everything all sorted out with Margaret?

Marlena: I don't like this, John. I am not playing games with you.

John: Oh, come on.

Marlena: You know what, John? You say you love me, and you say you care about me. Can you see what this is doing to me? I'm not a person who -- who blackmails. I'm not a person that threatens exile. But the specter of watching you have something horrible happen in your life... and there's nothing that I -- there's noth--

John: So relax. I'll see him.

Marlena: Thank you.

John: Except.

Marlena: What? Except what?

John: Two conditions.

Marlena: What?

John: Number one -- I won't see him in a hospital.

Marlena: That makes sense. Why would you want him to have the equipment and resources that he needs to help you?

John: And number two -- I will only agree to see him one time. Then we'll take it from there.

Marlena: This is not speed dating, John.

John: You won, Blondie. Be nice.

Marlena: I'm not sure that I won, but I do have something figured out -- that would be you. If you're thinking of using this as a stall tactic to have one session and then blow off this doctor, then we're back to square one and you're out of my life.

Chelsea: We have to talk about Nick.

Melanie: No, we don't have to talk about anything.

Chelsea: Melanie, he's a wreck. They're worried what he might do to himself.

Melanie: Yeah, they should be. He's crazy.

Chelsea: You're the only thing that he thinks about. He's worried about how you feel about him.

Melanie: Okay, look -- if he was really worried about my feelings, then he probably wouldn't have, uh, let's see, where do I start -- killed my Father, tell me I did it, send me threatening letters, lock me in a room, try and kill me. Let me know when it sinks in that I don't really give a damn about how Nick feels.

Chelsea: You have to understand why he did all of those things.

Melanie: I know why he did all those things. He did them because he was crazy to begin with, and then you used him up and threw him away. You're like the training wheels to his craziness. How sweet. His very first murder.

Chelsea: I know that you're upset.

Melanie: You're so damn perceptive.

Chelsea: Nick, the real Nick, would never do those things.

Melanie: Oh, let me guess -- he was sweet and sane until he met megabitch Melanie, right?

Chelsea: Do you not remember that this is the guy that took a bullet for you? Do you not have any compassion whatsoever?

Melanie: You're gonna tell me about having any compassion? Unbelievable. Unbelievable. You know what? Since we're sharing things, let me just say one more thing. You, and everyone else in this whole hellhole, makes me sick. Your dad was on my ass day in and day out, scaring me, threatening me, being condescending to me. And you...well, you killed your brother.

Chelsea: Shut up.

Melanie: But you're still good and sweet and you have the right to talk to be about being compassionate? It's funny. You all act kind of like I smell bad, and, really, for the life of me, I don't figure where you get off being able to make that kind of judgment.

Chelsea: Oh, poor put-off Melanie. God, I'm so stupid. Stephanie was right. I was -- I was incredibly stupid to expect you to think of anybody before yourself.

Melanie: You know what? I'm not gonna take this anymore. And if you don't shut up, I'm gonna make you! Aah!

Nicole: What am I gonna do?

[Cellphone ringing]

Nicole: It's E.J.

Sami: Where exactly are you going, Agent Hernandez?

Rafe: A little fact-checking mission.

Brady: I'll talk to him if you want me to.

Nicole: No, you can't.

Melanie: Somebody needed to put that dumb girl in her place.

Philip: Watch your mouth.

Melanie: You gonna tell me what to say now? Save your C.E.O. crap for somebody that cares.
