[Footsteps] [Breathing heavily]
Kate: Well, really, Daniel, the drama.
Daniel: Oh, Kate.
Kate: You sounded so serious on my voicemail. I don't know why you couldn't have left a message. Instead, you force me to come down here on a busy day?
Daniel: I didn't mean to frighten you.
Kate: I mean, everything that could go wrong went wrong today. I was putting fires out all over town, although I shouldn't really be complaining because hearth and home is up 11.5% this quarter.
Daniel: Oh, that's great. But listen --
Kate: Although my corporate taxes are gonna be through the roof, but I'm sure I'll find a way to handle that.
Daniel: Kate --
Kate: But nevertheless, it was a really rotten time to make me come down here. I mean, it's a silly cough. I'm busy.
Daniel: No, Kate! Now, you know I wouldn't make you come down here if it wasn't important, but you are coughing up blood. That is a sign of a serious illness.
Kate: Well, I'm feeling pretty good, you know? I'm feeling pretty good, so I'm thinking whatever it was probably went away.
Daniel: No, Kate, you know better than that.
Kate: Then what the hell is it?
[Door opens, closes]
Nicole: Ooh. E.J., there you are.
E.J.: Hey. Wow, look at you. You look like you just ran a marathon.
Nicole: In these shoes?
E.J.: Here. You're perspiring.
Nicole: No, thank you. Horses sweat. Men perspire. Ladies glow, and I forget where I heard that from.
E.J.: Well, don't change the subject, all right?
Nicole: E.J., it is bad. We need to do damage control right now.
E.J.: Okay, why don't you tell me what happened?
Nicole: Victor found out Trent and I are still married. And he's calling his lawyers to take back my divorce settlement.
E.J.: Did Trent tell Victor you're married?
Nicole: No. Victor found out everything because of that big mouth Bo Brady.
Maggie: Welcome. Table for two?
Hope: No, actually, tonight it'll be a table for four.
Bo: Early dinner with Steve and Kay.
Maggie: I saw the mayor's press conference on TV, and I trust I have the honor of speaking with the new police commissioner?
Hope: Uh, no. Actually, I turned him down.
Maggie: Oh, no. Why?
Kayla: Yeah. Why? You would have done a terrific job.
Hope: Oh, Kay, thanks, but it just -- it wasn't meant to be.
Maggie: I don't know why not. I'd like to see women taking over all the important jobs in this town, starting with the mayor's. [Laughter]
Hope: Uh, no comment.
Steve: Hey, buddy, since Hope won't take over for Abe, would you consider throwing your hat in the ring?
Hope: Believe me, Roman and Abe have tried to convince him. And so have I.
Bo: Yeah, and I resisted... for a while.
Bo: Then I gave in.
Hope: Thanks for telling me!
Bo: I decided to go after the job, yes, I did.
Hope: The wife is always last to know.
Bo: Yeah, that's why I invited you guys to dinner. I thought we'd celebrate my commissionership or whatever they call it.
Maggie: Well, your table's ready, and we'll have a celebration.
Steve: You're paying.
Bo: Oh, not quite yet.
Melanie: Could I have a vodka tonic, please?
Bartender: Sure, if you show me some I.D.
Melanie: How about a seltzer with lime?
Bartender: Okay, coming right up.
Melanie: Oh! Hey, you scared me.
Nick: I'm also sorry for, uh -- for being late. I got hung up.
Melanie: Oh, that's okay. Actually, I just got here, too. There was something I had to take care of.
Nick: You and me both.
[Knock on door]
Stephanie: Max, it's Steph. Are you in there?
Bo: Oh, yeah.
Bo: You would have.
Hope: Thank you. Thanks. You know, I really would have loved the challenge, but you all know me. I mean, a job like that, high-powered, it just would have completely consumed me. And it wouldn't have been fair to Bo or to Ciara, and Ciara's at such a great age right now.
Kayla: You know, you're just as bad as your wife. You become the commissioner, you can't just put your head down and forget that you got a wife and family to worry about.
Bo: No worries there. Heck, I didn't want this job in the first place. I'm happier out on the streets chasing down criminals.
Steve: Yeah, man, so why'd you change your mind?
Bo: Abe browbeat me for a while, then my beautiful wife here turns down the job, and then Roman browbeat me for a while. Seems I have a duty to our beautiful little city. And there's a pretty nice jump in pay.
Kayla: That's nice.
Steve: Are you sure you want to deal with all that paperwork, though?
Bo: No, I do not, but it kind of comes with the territory. Besides, I'll be able to keep a close eye on what's going on in the department.
Kayla: Is that necessary?
Bo: Yeah, if, as we suspect, our new mayor's on DiMera's payroll, from this position I'll be able to keep a close eye on him. He won't be able to move without me knowing. That's the main reason I'm going after this job. We cannot let one of DiMera's lackeys take over the department, or Salem could turn into an open city.
Kayla: So, you got to fight crime. At the same time, you have to keep Stefano from taking over the town?
Bo: There you go.
Kayla: You know, you would have made a terrific one yourself.
Hope: Thank you, but home life might have gotten a little sticky. I would have been his boss.
Bo: Well, as it turns out, I may be your boss.
Hope: No, I don't think. Not ever.
Mayor Marino: Why would you say that? You know, there's no guarantee that you have the job, Detective Brady.
Kate: So, what's wrong with me, Daniel?
Daniel: Well, we've done some tests, but we still need to do a few more.
Kate: So you don't have a definitive diagnosis.
Daniel: Not quite yet, but I'm --
Kate: Well, why did you ask me to come down here?
Daniel: You know what, Kate? I'm not gonna lie to you. There is something seriously wrong, and I am gonna keep running tests until I figure out what it is.
Kate: Okay, so let me understand this. You've run all these tests and you still don't know what it is. You know what that makes me think? Doctors making a big deal out of nothing. What, turning one office visit into 20. Maybe I'm not even sick. Did you think about that?
Daniel: Oh, please, don't trivialize this.
Kate: Well, then, don't use scare tactics on me. Maybe I have a bad cold. Maybe I have nasty allergies.
Chelsea: "Allergies"? You're telling me that's all that's wrong with you are allergies?
Daniel: No, Chelsea --
Chelsea: I should have known that you'd do anything to keep seeing Daniel. You're pathetic.
E.J.: So, Bo ratted you out to Victor?
Nicole: No, not exactly.
E.J.: All right, Nicole, look, I'm your lawyer. I need to know the facts.
Nicole: All right, all right. Nosy Bo and his even nosier wife, Hope, figured out that Trent and I were still married. And Bo hates me. He couldn't wait to run straight to his daddy, Victor, and tell him the big news. The only concession Bo made... was that I got to tell Victor myself. Yay.
E.J.: Well, when Victor found out, what did he do? You know, you're lucky you weren't arrested for fraud.
Nicole: It was worse. He laughed. He thought it was hilarious, and then he told me I had to give back my entire settlement. He said I even had to pay back every cent that I already spent. [Sighs] You know, I hate that Bo Brady, and I hate my dearly departed husband even more.
E.J.: What do you mean by "dearly departed husband"?
Maggie: This is the best news. We are gonna be working with a member of the green restaurant association, pending certification, of course.
Mickey: I'm happy for you, sweetie.
Maggie: Oh, isn't that fabulous? Oh, my goodness.
Mickey: I'm very proud of you. Am I missing something here? Haven't you done that -- all that green stuff already?
Nick: Um...not to bring up a sore subject, but I just wondered if your dad had gotten to you again.
Melanie: Uh, no. But I don't think he's going to.
Stephanie: Max, is this a bad time?
Max: Um, just a minute. [Clears throat] [Exhales deeply] Hey.
Stephanie: There you are.
Max: Hi. Hi. Mm. I-I love -- I love how you say hello.
Stephanie: I was worried about you.
Max: I don't know why. Why?
Stephanie: Come on. After what happened between you and your father.
Max: Uh, Trent, okay? I don't want to hear him referred to as my Father ever again.
Max: What kind of father [Chuckles] makes his own daughter turn into a prostitute, huh?
Stephanie: You know what? I wasn't even talking about Trent. I was talking about you.
Max: I'm -- what? I'm fine.
Stephanie: I should have known.
Stephanie: Max, it's me, okay? You're not fine. You haven't been fine since before we left for France to find your sister.
Max: Yeah, I know. I know.
Stephanie: So it's about time we do something about that.
Max: You're right. You know, you're always right.
Stephanie: I'm glad we can both agree on something.
Stephanie: Oh, my God. You're so tense.
Stephanie: You are carrying around way too much anger.
Max: Yeah, well, that's, uh -- things will get better now.
Stephanie: How? It's not like anything's changed. Everyone got some good shouting in, but [Sighs] I know all you can still think about is Trent.
Max: Well, that's all over and done with.
Stephanie: You mean that?
Max: Yeah. We'll never have to worry about Trent Robbins again.
Stephanie: How can you say that?
Max: Just trust me. Now let's concentrate on more important things. Whoop.
Caroline: Hello, darling. [Sighs] Well, it's a beautiful night. It's a full moon. Cool, breezy, just -- just the way you like it. [Breathing heavily]
Chelsea: You can't get Daniel to want you anymore, so instead you're getting him to pity you? Smart.
Daniel: Chelsea, you have no id--
Kate: No, no, no. Let her speak. I know you're angry at me. I don't blame you. But I hope that we're still gonna be able to talk.
Chelsea: About what? How I should forgive you both for sleeping together? I don't think that that's gonna happen, ever.
Kate: Chelsea, don't be so dismissive, okay? I want things to work out between us.
Chelsea: Don't hold your breath.
Kate: Daniel and I have told you everything about our relationship, which wasn't even a relationship, which was two people reaching out to each other for a little warmth, a little understanding.
Chelsea: That's really touching. You make sleeping together sound really noble.
Daniel: Chelsea, that is just way out of line.
Chelsea: I'm the injured party here, so I think, Daniel, that I can say what I'd like. Thanks.
Kate: Daniel and I have been open about what happened to us, what happened between us. You know the whole truth. Whatever happened is over now. You need to deal with that.
Chelsea: Okay. If it's over, then why did you call her and ask her here to talk about the next step?
Kate: [Sighs] Chelsea, you were eavesdropping?
Chelsea: [Chuckles] You're obviously not that sick because you're here to talk about the next step of your relationship, so fill me in on that. What is the next step? You guys are gonna pick up where you left off and start having sex whenever you're feeling lonely?
Daniel: Chelsea, you completely misunderstood. What I w--
Hope: And, Kayla, this is Mayor Marino.
Kayla: Hi, I've heard so much about you.
Mayor Marino: And I you. You're a credit to the hospital, I understand.
Kayla: Thank you.
Bo: I didn't mean to imply that I've got the job in the bag. I'm just happy to be considered.
Mayor Marino: Mm-hmm, well, as you know, hope was my first choice, but I will consider you along with the other candidates.
Bo: I appreciate that.
Mayor Marino: I'll be in touch once I make my decision. Good evening.
Hope: Good night.
Bo: [Chuckles] He didn't seem too thrilled about my candidacy.
Hope: Brady, he said he was considering you.
Bo: Yeah, well, I won't count my chickens. If he's done his homework, he knows that I have recently been investigated for withholding evidence in the Hollingsworth case.
Hope: Well, then, he also must know, as well, that you were cleared.
Bo: Even so, if you want to climb the ladder in the police department, you got to stay squeaky-clean. Once internal affairs investigates you, you're marked for life. This will come back to haunt me.
Kayla: Oh, come on. Don't worry about that. That's all behind you now.
Bo: Yeah, well, got a few other reprimands in my jacket.
Kayla: Look, the most important thing is that you were an honest cop, and you get the bad guy, and you're not blind to logic and fairness and compassion. Come on. It's the truth.
Bo: That sounds like a campaign slogan.
Hope: Yes, and it's a very good one, but it does bring up an excellent point. And that is if Bo does get the job, he won't be able to play by his own rules. Once he's commissioner, you're gonna have to follow the letter of the law, no matter what... or who's involved.
Caroline: You know, darling... [Breathing heavily]
Caroline: ...I miss you, know you? I miss you every day. More now than ever. And, um...I wish you were still here, Shawn. Max needs you. He's so confused. He needs his real father. That's you, Shawn. Not that selfish bastard Trent Robbins. [Sighs] I get so angry every time I think about that man daring to come back here. Every time he comes near our son, I'm terrified of what's gonna happen. That's why I took care of him tonight. We don't have to worry about Trent bothering Max anymore. [Breathing heavily]
Nicole: What time is it? Maybe I should get going.
E.J.: Not so fast, young lady. Sit down, please. Sit down. Why are you referring to Trent as your dearly departed husband?
Nicole: Did I say that?
E.J.: Yes, you did.
Nicole: Well, duh. He's on his way out if he isn't gone already. The whole world now knows that Trent acted as a pimp for his own daughter.
E.J.: That is disgusting.
Nicole: Don't preach to the choir. I must say, I am amused that soon everyone in academia will know that Trent's ex was a porn star.
Nicole: I mean, do you think the regents at our stuffy university will like that kind of notoriety?
E.J.: I-I guess not.
Nicole: Whatever. You know what? Let's get back to the whole point of this meeting. How am I gonna keep my hard-earned cash from Victor?
E.J.: That's a good question.
Nicole: Well, figure it out. You're the lawyer. I mean, I'm the victim in this whole situation.
E.J.: I like that word.
E.J.: "Victim." It's a very good courtroom word. And that's exactly how we're gonna portray you.
Nicole: So you -- you actually think I have a chance to keep my money?
E.J.: Look, I'm not gonna promise anything, but I think we should stay positive.
Maggie: Yes, Chez Rouge is involved with Salem's Green Committee, but the green restaurant association -- it's a bigger ball game. I mean, they've been doing this since 1990, and they can help us become more environmentally responsible.
Mickey: Well, that's nice.
Maggie: Here, look. Look at their website. See? Dinegreen.com. Do you realize they have the world's largest database? And they can even help us get national certification. And if I get certified, I'll be able to post their logo outside, use it on our website, and in our advertising.
Mickey: Well, that's nice.
Maggie: Nice. Nice? Oh, it's so much more important than that. Look, besides doing something good for the planet, getting certified is good for business. And it'll help me save money. See, that's a good thing. And -- oh, if we're on their restaurant guide, it'll bring in new customers.
Mickey: That's good.
Maggie: Yes! That is so good! Oh, honey. Oh, oh, oh!
Melanie: That's so gross, old people sucking face. [Giggles]
Nick: No, no, that's -- that is true, long-lasting love.
Melanie: Oh, well, someone should tell them to get a room, a dark, dark room.
Nick: Hey, you guys, you want to come over here?
Melanie: What are you doing? I don't want to talk to them.
Maggie: Uh...yes, okay. [Laughs] Hi, honey. Who's your friend?
Nick: Melanie, this is Aunt Maggie and Uncle Mickey.
Melanie: Nice to meet you.
Maggie: Nice to see you.
Stephanie: I'll bet if we stay in bed and make love, we'll never fight about anything. [Chuckles]
Max: I'm okay with that.
Stephanie: I mean, we might have to get someone to throw in a meal here and there just so we can have the energy to keep going.
Stephanie: It's a plan, isn't it?
Max: [Chuckles] Making love all the time and having meals brought up? I mean, I sure picked the right girl to fall in love with, I'll tell you.
Stephanie: Yeah, you did.
Max: Yeah. [Chuckles]
Stephanie: So, where were you earlier?
Max: Why, were you looking for me?
Stephanie: I told you I was worried about you. You didn't answer your cellphone.
Max: Uh, you don't have to worry about me all the time.
Stephanie: Uh-huh. Now, where were you?
Max: Down at the garage. I was working on an old engine. You know how that relaxes me. Anything to keep my mind off of Trent.
Stephanie: Well, that's too bad, because if you had had answered your cellphone...
Stephanie: ...You could have had me all afternoon.
Max: Mm. [Chuckles]
Stephanie: I bet I'm more relaxing than an old car engine.
Max: You know, I don't think -- mm -- I don't think relaxing is the right word for what you do to me, actually.
Daniel: I think you owe Kate an apology.
Chelsea: I don't think so.
Kate: Daniel, could you give me a moment alone with Chelsea?
Daniel: What's the point? She's not gonna listen.
Kate: Please. It's important.
Chelsea: Don't worry, Daniel. I won't upset your patient.
Daniel: [Chuckles] Well, this is against my better judgment.
Kate: Please. Please go.
Chelsea: Maybe I'm the one that should go.
Chelsea: Are you okay?
Kate: Well, no. Apparently not. That's why Daniel wants to do some tests.
Chelsea: So you're not really making more of this than there is?
Kate: [Chuckles] Actually, I'm trying to make less of it than there is.
Chelsea: Well, does Daniel know what's wrong?
Kate: No, no, he doesn't. That's why [Coughs] He's gonna do some tests, more tests.
Chelsea: I don't want you to be sick.
Kate: Thank you. You know, I am trying to do the right thing here. I really am. But it's not my forte, so... I wish you could cut me a little slack, Chelsea.
Chelsea: I'm listening.
Kate: I feel like I've al-- already expressed myself, so... do you want me to spell it out?
Chelsea: I'm not really sure I know what you're trying to say.
Kate: I would never in a million years have intended to hurt you...especially after what happened with -- with Billie and with Nick. What happened with Daniel was a fluke. It was a -- it was a bad decision. But whatever the reason is, I know that we've wounded you. I know that. And I am -- I am so sorry for that.
Chelsea: That's easy for you to say now.
Kate: Actually, no, it's not. [Sniffles] Actually, it's not. It's harder for me to swallow my pride than most people probably, but I am more than willing to do that for you.
Chelsea: Do you have any idea what you did to me? I mean, I thought that Daniel was the one.
Kate: Baby, maybe it's time for you to start thinking about second chances. Look, people make mistakes. They do, and sometimes you're affected by them and you're hurt by them. But I think the best thing you can do is learn from it and deal with the pain...get over it. Can you do that?
Chelsea: No. Sorry. I don't think that that's ever gonna happen.
Mickey: Now, who knew Max had a sister? Did you know, Maggie?
Maggie: No, I didn't.
Melanie: Yeah, actually, Max didn't, either, until recently.
Maggie: And that would mean?
Nick: Trent Robbins is her father.
Maggie: Oh, of course. I'm sorry. You know, I just have a hard time thinking of him as Max's father.
Melanie: I mean, why would you? He dumped him when he was a kid, so...
Mickey: So you don't get along with Trent?
Melanie: We did, but we don't anymore. It's a long story.
Nick: Not worth getting into.
Maggie: So, where have you been all these years, sweetheart?
Melanie: Uh, abroad mostly.
Maggie: Well, welcome to Salem.
Melanie: Thank you.
Nick: So, what were you two celebrating?
Maggie: Oh, the biggest news. We are under review by the green restaurant association.
Nick: I would say that this calls for a celebration.
Nick: Uh, sparkling cider.
Nick: Four sparkling ciders, please?
Maggie: Nick, honey, what on earth happened to your hand?
Kayla: We got to go. We got to go.
Hope: We need to get going as well.
Kayla: I got to see Joe. Listen, you are gonna be the commissioner any minute.
Bo: Yeah, right, right.
Kayla: I'm serious with you.
Bo: Good night, you guys. Thanks for coming out.
Kayla: Bye, doll.
Hope: Drive safely. Kiss Joey for me.
Kayla: I will.
Hope: Hey, listen.
Hope: Before we go, I know you have mixed feelings about taking on this job, but honestly, I-I truly hope it works out.
Bo: We'll worry about it if and when it happens.
Hope: You are going to make a terrific commissioner.
Hope: And everyone's gonna be so proud of you, especially your wife. Come on, let's go.
Bo: Listen, wait a minute. It's a beautiful night out. How about we take a stroll up to the cemetery and visit Pop's grave?
Hope: Sure. Come on.
Bo: I don't know how he'd feel about me going after this job, but...I want to get his blessings, okay?
Caroline: So...that's what I did. Some confession. Sometimes I surprise myself. I got to go, darling. I got to get back to the pub, you know. [Footsteps] Hello? Is anyone there?
E.J.: Here you go.
Nicole: Thanks. You know, I would do anything to keep Victor from taking back my money. My marriage to him was no picnic.
E.J.: I know.
Nicole: I earned every penny of that settlement.
E.J.: I know you did. The problem you're gonna have is the law is not on your side. Now, there are ways around that. I would suggest that we go with the angle that you had no idea that Trent didn't go through with the divorce after you left him.
Nicole: I thought ignorance of the law was no excuse.
E.J.: Well, it isn't, but a beautiful blonde on the stand has been known to turn the heart of many judges.
Nicole: Well, if you ask me questions about my marriage to Trent in court, you'll get all the tears you need.
Nicole: I sure know how to pick them, huh?
Nicole: Ugh. God. I was so stupid back then. I mean, first my Father pushes me into porn and I'm dumb enough and weak enough to let him. [Sighs] And then I -- I had finally gotten out and was trying to -- I was trying to remake my life. And then Trent comes along, and I think he's a good and decent man, and he turns out to be the most abusive person I have ever met, and he was -- he was so violent.
E.J.: Come here. Can you prove any of this?
Nicole: Probably. I just have to dig up a few neighbors from back then.
E.J.: Good. Look, come on, you were young. You were innocent. You were basically a child. You went from an abusive relationship with your father to an abusive relationship with your husband. Nobody's gonna blame you for running away. Believe me, by the time I finish with the judge, he'll need a box of Kleenex. Our biggest concern is Trent. If he decides to take the stand, he is gonna try and paint you as being some kind of opportunistic user.
Nicole: I wouldn't worry about that if I were you. Trent's not gonna make it to the stand.
Nick: My hand is fine.
Maggie: It looks awfully sore.
Mickey: Those are bad bruises, Nick.
Maggie: You know what? How did you do this? What did you do?
Nick: It's -- it's nothing. I hurt my hand when I was in France.
Mickey: Really? Those bruises seem pretty fresh, Nick.
Melanie: Yeah, I don't remember you hurting your hand in Marseille. When did that happen?
Max: Oh, my goodness. Are you trying to kill me here?
Stephanie: You're the one who started it.
Max: I know, but...wow.
Stephanie: Are you ready for round 16 or whatever it is?
Max: Oh, man. Yeah, but in a little bit 'cause I want to take a shower first.
Stephanie: Okay, I'll join you.
Max: Okay? But wait a minute, okay? 'Cause you know how the water is. It takes a while to get up here.
Stephanie: Okay. Oh, my -- Max! Did I do that to you?
Stephanie: There's scratches and bruises all over your back.
Max: Well, what can I say? You're a -- you're a real tiger. [Growls] [Breathing heavily]
Caroline: Who's there? I can hear you. [Gasps]
