Anna: John, thank God I found you. Is the wedding still going on?
John: No, it's over. You looking for me?
Anna: [Clears throat] It's, uh, Stefano.
John: You don't need to tell me more.
Anna: Well, I-I was really looking for Marlena, but I couldn't find her, so --
John: Are you gonna tell me something about Stefano?
Anna: Yes, but I don't think you're gonna like it, which is really an understatement. I think you're gonna freak out.
Anna: The Phoenix is back.
John: Can you be more specific?
Anna: Stefano is awake.
Tony: I'm sorry, Father. I just can't accept the fact that Marlena could have done this to you.
Stefano: You have no idea with whom you are dealing, do you? This woman, this she-devil that you think you know so well is nothing but a well-constructed facade.
Tony: Masking a cold-hearted psychopath.
Stefano: [Chuckles] You mock me, huh? Your own father while I am incapacitated here?
E.J.: Look, Father, we're just trying to understand better so that we can help.
Stefano: How can you help me now? How can you bring back all the precious time that I have lost and erase the memories of the horrors I went through with Marlena keeping me in isolation, trapped like a rat? I could not move. I could not talk. She tried to destroy my life. Well, I am going to destroy hers in-kind.
Sami: Oh, my God. It's true.
E.J.: Samantha, what are you doing here?
Sami: Well, I heard he had been transferred here, and I just had to come and see for my self.
Stefano: And I see a headstrong girl again.
Sami: Don't talk to me. I heard what you said about my Mother. And I want to know what you have done with her. Answer me!
John: And when did all this happen?
Anna: Well, what difference does that make? Stefano's awake. That's what matters. Eyes open, mouth moving, sounds coming out. Whatever the definition of awake is, he's it.
John: Then my older brother and I have a little...catching up to do, then.
Anna: Well, I wish I didn't have to...ever talk to him again. I mean, just the sound of his voice makes my blood run cold.
John: Not to worry.
Anna: "Not to worry"? You know, I'd have to be in a coma myself not to worry. John, you know what he's capable of. Even from his hospital bed, he'll be plotting and itching to mess things up for everyone again. I mean, the misery alone that he's inflicted on Tony and me. He enjoys making people suffer.
John: He won't hurt you, Anna. You have my word. Now, back to Blondie. You said you tried to find her, but you couldn't.
Anna: No, I went over to her place, but she wasn't there. I left her messages. She hasn't called me back. I have no idea where she could be.
John: Perhaps I do.
Anna: Well, wait. John.
Sami: Tell me what you have done with my Mother.
Stefano: Nothing. As you can see, I am incapacitated.
Sami: Oh, spare me. I know you're up to something, and I want to know what it is.
Stefano: All right, I will admit one thing. I am very sad that you and Elvis are no longer married.
Sami: How does he know that?
Stefano: Well, I mean, there's always hope for the future.
Sami: I know you've done something to my Mother, and I am not gonna let you get away with it.
Tony: Somewhat unfounded accusations, don't you think, Samantha?
Sami: Stay out of it, Tony.
Tony: I don't remember inviting you into my Father's room.
E.J.: Okay, can we just relax?
Tony: Are you telling me to relax after she comes in here, spewing --
E.J.: Tony, back off. Thank you.
Tony: What's the matter with you?
E.J.: She's worried about her mother.
Tony: So that gives her the right to come in here spewing, "bloody murder, everyone."
Stefano: Boys, you're embarrassing me in front of our guest.
Sami: Look, I have had enough out of you, all right? I know that you are up to something with my Mother, and I'm not gonna let you get away with it!
E.J.: Okay. That's enough. Come on.
Sami: I cannot believe that you were defending him.
E.J.: All right, look, I'm not defending him. Do you understand? But there is nothing to be gained by attacking him. He's a sick man.
Sami: [Scoffs] Sick in the head.
E.J.: Please. All right, Samantha? I have enough on my plate without you going --
Sami: Wait, wait, wait. You have enough on your plate? Stefano is back, and my Mother is missing.
E.J.: What do you mean she's missing? Have you tried calling her? Maybe she's --
Sami: Of course. I've left more than 10 messages for her. Obviously, something is wrong. She's gone. Stefano has done something to her.
E.J.: All right. Look, stop. Let's sit down for a second. Come on, sit, please. Samantha, my Father has been in a state facility in a coma, all right? When they brought him here, he was unconscious. It's not like he could just run out of the hospital, done something to your mother, and run back.
Sami: Of course not. But he probably had one of his minions kidnap her.
E.J.: He's been in a coma.
Sami: What were you doing in there? How can you even stand to be in the same room with him after everything he's done, after everything you said? Have you forgotten what he did to us, what he did to my family?
E.J.: No, I haven't forgotten about that. But if you want to get something out of my Father, the way to do it is not to go in there shouting and screaming at him. Now, you let me handle it calmly and carefully.
Sami: So, what, you're just gonna calmly and carefully ask him if he had someone kidnap my Mother?
E.J.: Stop. You don't know that he's done anything to your mother. Just because you can't get ahold of her for a few hours doesn't mean that she's missing.
Sami: E.J., Stefano is awake and he's thinking and he's talking. That means he's done something. It means he's up to some horrible plan. And if you're not gonna find out what it is, then I will.
Anna: I'm telling you, John, she's not here. We've looked all over.
John: Rolf. Rolf!
Anna: Maybe he got scared and left town because he heard Stefano was awake.
John: Are you sure Blondie wasn't in that townhouse?
Anna: Of course I'm sure. I went over there right before I came over to the church. I rang the doorbell, knocked on the door, called through the door. No one was home. I even asked the neighbors and they haven't seen her.
John: But you didn't go inside.
Anna: Well, it's not like I have a key. Do you?
John: Don't need one.
Anna: Well, I bet you don't.
E.J.: Look, I can handle my own Father. Thank you.
Sami: No one has been able to handle him. Death can't even stop him from hurting people.
E.J.: Let's not panic, please.
Sami: Not panic? E.J., I can see it in you. You're worried, too. You think he's done something, don't you? Tell me what is going on. Tell me what he's done to her.
E.J.: I can't tell you anything, Samantha, because I don't know anything.
Sami: Oh, God. He doesn't care, does he? If he can't have her for himself, he would rather she be dead. I mean, that's been his M.O. from the start. He is obsessed with her. And if he can't own her, he'd rather destroy her.
E.J.: Hey! No, no, no.
Sami: E.J., you can't. Please let me --
E.J.: Samantha, stop. Stop. Look at me, okay? You want to do something? We'll do something, all right? Let's go and find your mother, okay?
Anna: [Chuckles] I can't believe somebody would cut your tires.
John: I'll have to take the Ginsu knives away from Rolf.
Anna: You really think that Rolf would double-cross you?
John: Rolf would kill his own mother if it pleased Stefano.
Anna: Yeah, but you're his boss now. I mean, shouldn't he be a little bit intimidated by you, too? Unless he's just plain crazy.
John: Oh, no. He's as sane as I am. But he's a coward.
Anna: Well, we don't even know for sure that he knows Stefano is awake. How could he already be helping him?
John: Because it's in his blood.
Anna: Okay, well, don't you have another car in the garage?
John: Conveniently, E.J. has it.
Anna: Maybe I can call one of Tony's drivers.
John: That's not necessary. I've got a bike.
Anna: "A bike"? What kind of bike? John?
John: If you're going, put that on.
Anna: Oh, no, no, no. No, I'm wearing heels. You know, won't my feet get caught in the little peg things? Can't we just call a cab? I know a number of a --
Tony: Damn it, Father. I demand you tell me --
Stefano: You demand? Since when do you demand anything from me?
Tony: You think I'm playing games here? It's for your own protection. If anything's happening to Marlena, you think the authorities are gonna have some long list of suspects?
Stefano: Do you think I give a damn about lists?
Tony: How about hurting innocent people? Do you give a damn about that?
Stefano: "Innocent people"? No such thing.
Tony: What did you do to her?
Stefano: Let us just say that I am a firm believer in an eye for an eye.
Tony: Oh, you can't be serious. Marlena wouldn't hurt you.
Stefano: Oh, I see. So now you are an expert on who she is, who anyone is.
Tony: All I'm asking --
Stefano: You don't ask anything. Do you understand? After all I've suffered, all I've gone through, my son has the nerve to interrogate me, admonish me? [Sighs] But now that I can communicate, huh, after all this time...you have the audacity to insult my intelligence and want to give me some of your so-called advice as to what I should do in a situation such as this, avenging my own death!
Tony: All I'm trying to point out is that by going after Marlena now -- never mind. I could never get through to you. You think you have all the answers. Thinking you can go around wrecking people's lives when it just concerns yourself. That's the way it's always been. It's the way you are.
Stefano: After all the sacrifices that I have made for you, where is your loyalty?
Tony: What sacrifices?! My loyalty is to myself... to Anna and to our future. And that's not the issue here.
Stefano: I'll tell you what the issue is, then. That woman tortured me. She injected me with drugs that were supposed to induce catatonia. I could see everything. I could hear everything. The minutes became hours. The days became like years. I was trapped in my own body.
Tony: Father, I understand that you've been traumatized.
Stefano: "Traumatized"? I've been shattered! Marlena tried to send me to hell. But unfortunately for her, she did not succeed, eh? And now, my dear son, she is all mine. [Chuckles] And I am going to make her pay for what she did to me for the rest of her miserable life.
Tony: This is madness. Certainly, Marlena despises you. She fears you, but she's just incapable of trying to hur-- oh, what's the use? It's like talking to a wall.
Stefano: Wait, no. [Coughs] Go ahead. Go ahead, finish your sentence. What were you going to say? That she's not capable of evil, right? That's what you were going to say, huh? This woman, who is utterly without conscious, injected me with drugs of untraceable toxins.
Tony: Do you have proof?
Stefano: My word is not sufficient?
Tony: Well, it won't be enough for a judge and jury.
Stefano: Do I sound like I'm gonna take this to court?
Tony: How do you know what happened, Father?
Stefano: I know because she told me. She told me what she was going to do step by step. And then she looked at me dead in the eye and injected me. And within moments, I was frozen. And I'll never forget the look on her face. It was almost as if she was, well, happy. You think this is fiction, huh? Some cock-and-bull story that I made to entertain you?
Tony: Huh. I don't know what to think.
Stefano: You saw the condition I was in when I was brought in, did you not? Yes, on the outside, I looked like I was brain-dead like a vegetable, but inside, I was filled with fire. I remember there was a moment that I started screaming in my head. Screaming, screaming so loud that I thought my ears were ringing. Can you imagine what it is like to be able to hear and see everything, but... that is torture. Cruel torture. You are as alone as any person can be. I remember...I remember hearing you and Lexie and Elvis going on and on about how much you wanted to help me, how much you really cared, being so solicitous, and yet sending me off to that hideous facility.
Tony: You actually heard us?
Stefano: Of course I did. I heard everything. Did I just not explain to you how my mind was alive?
Tony: It sounds...
Stefano: Like hell.
Stefano: But worse. Hell does not even come close.
Tony: Yes, I know what hell is like. You sent me there.
Stefano: Aren't you lovely? But, my son, I am alive. And for the first time in a long time, I feel like a young man again. Focused, driven...and if the upright citizens of Salem think that I was difficult before [Laughs] Oh, they have no idea what is in store for them now. [Laughs]
Anna: Marlena? Marlena, what -- oh, my God! Marlena? Can you -- what --
John: Anna, call 911.
Anna: Okay. Okay.
John: She's not breathing.
Anna: It's ringing.
Anna: Yes, we need an ambulance. A woman is passed out cold. I don't know what happened.
Sami: Oh, my God, Mom!
Stefano: What did that homicidal maniac think? That she could inject me with paralytic poisons and get away with it? [Chuckles] Look at you, my son, sitting there with a skeptical look on his face, like his father is deluding himself. My son who feels for his torturer.
Tony: Oh, damn it. That's not fair.
Stefano: "Not fair"? What is unfair is being pumped full of drugs and imprisoned in your own body!
Tony: Could you have possibly mistaken what Marlena had injected you with? Because when I spoke to Roman, he said --
Stefano: Oh, Roman.
Tony: No, Roman and Abe had approved you being injected with sodium pentothal.
Stefano: Truth serum. Do you think truth serum paralyzes you?
Tony: Maybe you had an adverse reaction.
Stefano: God! [Coughs]
Stefano: Oh, God.
Tony: Are you all right, Father? Shall I call a doctor?
Stefano: Oh, God, that you doubt me. I hate that you doubt me. [Coughs] This was no adverse reaction, Antony. If I had not such strength and will to live, I would not have been able to escape what she had planned for me, but here I am.
Tony: Mm. Yes. And don't think we're not all thrilled to see you.
Stefano: How kind.
Tony: Yes, and speaking about kindness --
Stefano: I need some rest.
Tony: Yeah, but first you're gonna hear me out. You said to me that you've been through hell, worse than hell. But even though you're recovering, you still have your life back. And for that, I'm sure you must feel grateful, maybe even lucky, maybe -- dare I say -- blessed.
Stefano: Oh, good. That I just need a jolly sermon.
Tony: What I want to say to you is I want you to think about your family, your legacy, and what it means to all of us -- your children, your grandchildren, your future grandchildren. That you are the bigger man.
Stefano: Go on.
Tony: Well, my point is, is that you have an opportunity now to prove to your detractors that you actually have a heart, a conscious. And the way you accomplish this is just to call off this vendetta you have against Marlena and take the high road for once in your life, and do it now.
Stefano: No. Even if I wanted to, which I do not, it's much too late.
John: Breathe. Breathe.
Sami: Come on, Mom. Come on, Mom, you have to fight! You have to fight, please. [Voice breaking] We need you, Mom, please. We need you so much. I need you. Mom, please.
Anna: The ambulance is on its way.
E.J.: Come on, come on. It's okay.
John: I know you can hear me. Breathe. Breathe.
John: Sensational. That's it. Just keep going. That's it. Just keep it going now. Just keep it going.
Stefano: So, you still feel I am faking my paralysis?
Tony: To clarify -- I don't think you're faking anything. I think whatever it is you've suffered through may have distorted your recollections.
Anna: Oh, Tony. They just brought Marlena in.
Tony: What happened?
Anna: John and I found her unconscious on her bedroom floor. If we hadn't gotten to her townhouse when we did -- and I think this is Stefano's doing. Maybe next time, he'll tell us all that he's awake and alive before he can hurt anybody else.
Sami: Aunt Kayla, Aunt Kayla, you have to do something.
Kayla: Samantha, I'll take care of it. I'll do my be-- it's okay. It's okay. All right, let's get her hooked up.
Doctor: It's fortunate you found Dr. Evans when you did.
E.J.: You saved her life, John.
Sami: Well, it's the least he could do.
E.J.: Okay, not now.
Kayla: Okay, let's all go out now. Come on. I will come and let you know as soon as I know anything, all right? Thank you very much.
Sami: What did that maniac do to her?
E.J.: You need to stop this now.
John: I'll make sure of that.
Sami: We have to find out what is wrong with her, what he did to her.
John: I'll have...a talk with him.
Sami: John, not now.
John: Why not?
Sami: Because my Mom needs you.
Doctor: We suspect some type of poisoning. EMT found an hypodermic at the patient's residence.
Kayla: Has blood been sent down to toxicology?
Doctor: It's on its way.
Kayla: All right, have it matched with the syringe. We are gonna take good care of you, Marlena. You got to hang in there. Do you hear me? You need to fight with everything you've got.
John: How is she?
Kayla: We don't know yet. We're running tests.
John: Yes. You people are good at that.
Kayla: You really have become a cold bastard, haven't you?
John: Is that your professional opinion?
Kayla: You know, the old John never would have allowed anyone to stop Bo and Hope's wedding. He would have done anything he could to protect them, instead of stand in the back like a coward. That's right. I saw you. I watched you as Bo was being taken away by his brother. It almost looked as though you enjoyed it.
John: I wouldn't go that far.
Kayla: Really? I saw that look on your face.
John: You saw only what you wanted to see.
Kayla: You know what? You used to feel like Bo and Hope were your family. You would have done anything to protect them. Now it's almost as if you reveled in their misery, in their humiliation.
John: Dr. Johnson, you will never know what I feel.
Kayla: I told you, I saw the look on your face.
John: Like I said, you saw what you wanted to see. Now, perhaps, you should stop trying to analyze me and get back to focusing on your patients.
Kayla: Wait. Just look me in the eye and tell me that the old you isn't buried inside of there trying to break free, trying to break loose from this shell that you've created.
John: I didn't create it myself. I had a lot of help.
Kayla: You're a good man. I know that. I can feel it. We all can. We see glimmers. They're in there, and it gives us hope. You showed true heroism the day of that plane crash. And tonight, saving Marlena's life.
John: What is your point?
Kayla: That maybe you just need to be reminded, that maybe those feelings are buried so deep, you don't remember them. But you love that woman in there. That she is, and will always be, the great love of your life. [Machine beeping]
Tony: What, you were wearing this ridiculous thing?
Anna: Yes, while you were visiting your charming father, I was riding John Black's Harley around town trying to find Marlena.
Tony: You helped John find her?
Anna: Yes, when I knew she was missing, or thought she was, I went to the church and found him and told him. And then the two of us went looking for her. And thank God we found her. Now, do I have helmet hair? I'm sure I've got smutch all over my face from riding around the city.
Tony: Anna, that was very courageous, what you did.
Anna: [Chuckling] Hardly. I'm sure any decent human being would have done the same thing.
Tony: Most human beings don't have your heart, your generosity, your passion.
Anna: Well, now you're just embarrassing me.
Tony: No, I'm in awe of you. It's the truth. I wish I had 1/10 of your nerve and your invincible spirit.
Anna: You wish you had my nerve? Oh, honey, you've got more nerve than you know what to do with. And so much strength, and I am so proud of you, Tony. Tony DiMera.
Tony: Will you wait for me?
Anna: Where are you going?
Tony: Um...I got to have a serious talk with my Father.
Anna: Mm. One more...for luck?
Tony: And that you always bring me, don't you, Mrs. DiMera?
Anna: I'll be right here.
Tony: Why did you do it?
Stefano: Is Marlena all right?
Tony: What do you mean is she all right? Of course she's not all right. She's fighting for her life.
Stefano: Well, at least you know I am a man of my word. She drew first blood and I responded in-kind, all right? You know, correct me if I'm wrong, but it's simple human nature.
Tony: You know, that's the tragedy of it all. It just brings you such great satisfaction, doesn't it? Hurting innocent people.
Stefano: I never laid a hand on her.
Tony: Oh, what, do you think I'm an idiot?!
Stefano: Let me be the judge of that.
Tony: Why do you disparage me, Father? Because my heart goes out to a woman out there, who maybe she did try to hurt you because she was trying to protect her family? That you have virtually destroyed her life. That I don't share in your psychotic glee that that woman is in that hospital bed fighting for her life.
Stefano: Take a good, hard look at me, Antony. I cannot move. I have been tortured for months. And you have the temerity...to call me gleeful and psychotic?!
Tony: Why do I even bother?
Stefano: Get the hell out of my sight.
Stefano: Just so you're clear -- this was not some random act of cruelty. On the contrary. It had great purpose.
Stefano: I made a promise to myself that I will return the favor to Marlena of hell and now I'm making good on it. [Monitor beeping]
Sami: Is there any change?
Sami: It's so hard to see her like this. She's usually the one...taking care of everyone else... worrying about...me.
Sami: Look, um, John, I know we've had our ups and downs lately. I guess that's a serious understatement.
John: I don't want to do this now.
Sami: Well, I do. It's important...for me...to say thank you. Thank you for what you did today. You saved my Mom's life.
John: Well, now we're even.
Sami: She loves you. She has always loved you. And she always will. And I believe that you love her, whether you realize it or not. I'm sorry. I guess it must be frustrating for you to hear everyone else tell you about how you used to be.
John: Another serious understatement.
Sami: I'm sure. Maybe what we need is to, um... what we need is to start having faith in who you are now... and stop holding out and waiting for someone who may never come back.
John: I will hold you to that.
Kayla: Hi, Anna.
Anna: Oh, Kayla, did you get Marlena's test results back?
Kayla: No. Unfortunately, we're still waiting.
Anna: Oh, God. It's quite a day, huh?
Kayla: More like quite a week.
Anna: Mm, yes. This hospital's been like a second home to some of us.
Kayla: Well, I just pray it doesn't stay that way.
Anna: Oh, I've got more prayers out there to God than you could imagine.
Kayla: Yeah, same here. Well, I really should get going.
Anna: Oh, Kayla, wait. You know, I heard what happened at the church. Are Bo and Hope okay? How are they doing?
Kayla: I don't really know. Eve and I didn't get a chance to talk to them after what happened, and, honestly, I'm not really very optimistic. It's extremely serious charges against Bo.
Anna: That is so hard to believe, isn't it?
Kayla: Not really. You know, Bo cares about his career, but his family's always been more important.
Anna: Well, if it was my brother, I'd probably do the same thing.
Kayla: Yeah. Hey, listen, I want to thank you.
Anna: Me? What for?
Kayla: Well, you may be the only reason that Marlena actually has a chance to recover.
Anna: Oh, no, no, no. John, John is the hero in this.
Kayla: No, you alerted him to what was going on. So I will say that you're both -- you're both responsible.
Tony: I can't let you do it, Father. You want to burn Salem to the ground, you go through me.
Stefano: [Chuckles] You think you scare me?
Tony: I'm trying to knock some sense into you!
Stefano: What happened to you, Antony? You used to have character, backbone.
Tony: Character, backbone. And what do you mean by that? That I was totally and utterly under your influence. The rest of the world be damned.
Stefano: By "backbone" I mean "guts." You've lost your mettle. It makes me sad.
Tony: I have plenty of backbone.
Stefano: [Coughs] I'm afraid that mutiny and courage are two completely different animals, my dear boy.
Tony: I'm not gonna let you turn Salem into your carnival of horrors. Not this time around.
Stefano: Since when did you ever let me do anything?
Tony: You don't become the puppeteer anymore, not when innocent people's lives are at stake. I'm not gonna stand around. I don't have the heart to do it.
Stefano: If you got a heart at all.
Tony: Oh, that's an interesting question coming from you.
Stefano: Your heart should be loyal to your family.
Tony: It is, but this is not about family. It never is with you. Even though you would strongly protest, this is about power. It is about revenge.
Stefano: What kind of crap are you spouting now, you fool? Family is what this has always been about. Our family was attacked, so you better decide now which side that you are on, because the lines are about to be drawn.
Tony: So what are you going to do now, Father, huh? What's gonna happen now?
Stefano: You'll see. Everyone will see.
Anna: Well, you look exhausted.
E.J.: Yeah. I haven't slept in a while.
Anna: It's not very healthy.
E.J.: No. I dare say it's not, but my mind seems to be racing at the moment. Doesn't want to allow it.
Anna: It's perfectly understandable.
E.J.: Yeah, well, it's driving me perfectly mad.
Sami: I need to talk to you...alone. Um, sorry, Anna.
Anna: Oh, no. No, no. It's okay. I understand.
E.J.: Thank you. Would you excuse me?
Anna: Mm. Please, God...protect us from Stefano's evil.
Steve: What happened to Marlena?
Kayla: She's been injected with a paralyzing toxin.
Sami: As soon as they find out what Stefano did to my mother, I hope John kills him.
John: So, it is to be.
Stefano: Hello, John.
