Max: May I help you?
Les: I believe you can. I understand you're looking for Mel, yeah?
Trent: Thank you. Melanie, it's your father. I have called you three times in the last two days, and you haven't answered. I'm getting worried. Where are you?
Nick: I know I've seen you somewhere before, but where?
Trent: Hey, Nick, mind if I join you?
Nick: Uh, no. Not at all. Just checking my e-mail.
Trent: You know, I've never been much of a coffee drinker, but I must admit. The coffee they have here -- excellent.
Nick: Best in Salem.
Trent: A lot better than that stuff they serve over at the Brady Pub, huh? Speaking of which, I haven't seen that bartender friend of yours around much lately. What, is he out of town?
E.J.: All right. Come here. Come on. Oh, there we go. Is that better? Okay, now, what were we doing, hmm? Remember? Should we try it? Here's the church. Here's the steeple. You open the doors, and you see all the people. No? Hmm? Hey.
Sami: Oh, uh, sorry. Um, I'm looking for my cellphone. Have you seen it?
E.J.: Uh, no, I haven't. [Allie babbles] Wow! You're welcome to join us if you want to. Just building a -- well, we were just destroying a town. Weren't we, darling? We were in the middle of building it. E.J.ville was looking like it was doing pretty well about 30 seconds ago. Whoa, hold on a second there, buddy. You want to give me a hand?
Sami: I'm, uh, looking for my cellphone.
E.J.: Come on. Look, they like playing this with me. They love playing this with you. Five minutes.
Sami: I don't know.
Sami: Hey, Johnny. How are you doing?
E.J.: Wow! How fun is that?
Sami: Are we building a little town?
E.J.: We are. We had a little bit of a problem earlier with a natural disaster. E.J.ville unfortunately seems to be full of them. Okay. You ready? Should we go and help mommy? Should we go and help her make something? 'Cause she doesn't know how to build a building.
Sami: Come here, Allie. Oh! Come here, sweetie.
Sami: Here. Looky here. Look at the building.
E.J.: I think what we're lacking here is a little bit of structural integrity. You see, the last earthquake pretty much would have taken that one out.
Sami: You did it on purpose!
E.J.: I did. But we have to be careful.
Sami: You're just like Johnny. You steal it from him every time. Come on, Allie, let's go build our own town over here on this side.
Nicole: Chloe, Lucas is gonna be fine.
Chloe: Nicole, he looked horrible. How could something like this happen?
Nicole: So, he got in a little fight.
Chloe: A little fight?
Nicole: Okay, a big one.
Chloe: They should have never sent Lucas to a maximum-security prison.
Nicole: What? They put him in with a bunch of hardened criminals?
Nicole: That doesn't make any sense.
Chloe: I know.
Nicole: Thank God he's still alive.
Chloe: Is that supposed to make me feel better?
Chloe: Well, it doesn't. Lucas can't go back there.
Nicole: Maybe he won't. For all we know, Roman's in there, telling him that right now.
Chloe: I hope so.
Nicole: It's definitely possible. I mean, why else would he ask us to wait out here?
Roman: Lucas, what the hell happened?
Lucas: I did what you asked, and they almost killed me for it.
Sami: Oh, Allie wants a turn next. Look at her. She cannot take her eyes off her brother.
E.J.: She does? Well, we can give her a shot.
Sami: All right. Allie, you want to go flying? Want to go flying with E.J.? Come on. Go ahead. There, it's her turn.
E.J.: Hey. Whoa! Whoa. Look at that big smile. There we go. There we go. Oh!
Sami: E.J., listen. I got to tell you. I, um -- I know I haven't been the easiest person to deal with lately, and I just want to say that, like, there's been a lot going on, you know, with Lucas and everything, and I know it's made me a little bit crazy.
E.J.: You think?
E.J.: Sorry. Go on, please.
Sami: No. No, I-I just meant that, um -- here, let me get you some water, sweetie. Um, I just meant that it's hard, okay? I really thought everything was gonna work out, you know? I thought it was all gonna be okay, and I guess that was just in my head. And it's not gonna be okay, but either way, I've been hard to deal with. And I'm sorry.
E.J.: It's all right. Look, I can't imagine me being the easiest person to live with, either.
Sami: That's just about the understatement of the year. Here, let me take one.
E.J.: Thank you.
Sami: E.J., listen to me. You have to understand that you are partly to blame, too. I mean, threatening to take my son away from me, threatening to take Johnny out of the country really sent me over the edge. [Johnny babbling]
E.J.: You want your toys? Look, I'm sorry. [Babbling intensifies] All right. Okay. Shh. Shh. Samantha, I just thought the last time I was gonna see him was when you walked out the door.
Sami: I would never do that, all right? I just wouldn't. And you should know me better than that.
E.J.: The truth is... [Sighs deeply] ...You and Johnny and Allie mean more to me than anything else in the world. I have no idea what I'd do if you weren't to be a part of my life.
Sami: And I know you feel that way. I know how important the kids are to you. I know what a good father you are to Johnny, and I would never take him away from you. I truly mean that, E.J. and this has been great. And I just -- I hope that we can find a way to get along and be friends for their sake.
E.J.: Yeah. Well, I mean, you know what the problem is.
E.J.: Lucas. Hey, Johnny, come here. Come on.
Roman: All right, take it easy. Just take it easy.
Roman: All right, Lucas. You know what? I'm gonna get a nurse. They should have given you something for the pain.
Lucas: They did already. It just hasn't kicked in yet.
Roman: Okay. Do you feel up to telling me what happened?
Lucas: My cover was broken. That's what happened.
Lucas: I don't know how. I did everything you guys told me to do. I got close to Manny Ortega.
Roman: All right. Was he still trafficking drugs out of prison?
Lucas: Hell, yes. Hell, yeah, he was. I even got the name of the supplier. They were gonna move him to general population tomorrow.
Roman: But Manny's people somehow found out.
Lucas: I don't know what happened. One minute we're talking about moving 50 keys through L.A. Harbor, and the next minute a couple guys jump me and they start kicking me in the head.
Roman: Lucas, I told you I had my doubts about you doing this.
Lucas: It was worth the risk. I don't have to go back to prison, right? You told me I'm a free man.
Chloe: You are?
Trent: So, where's your friend?
Nick: You mean Max? He's out of town.
Trent: Oh, yeah? Is he, what, on vacation?
Nick: Uh, I don't know.
Trent: What, he didn't -- didn't say?
Nick: Max and I haven't spoken in a while. In fact, I didn't even know he was gone until his mom told me.
Trent: Oh, that's odd.
Nick: Not really. Max likes to travel. Every couple of months, he'll take off for a week or two and visit his old buddies on the racing circuit.
Trent: Hmm. Where does he usually go?
Nick: Um, everywhere. Last time he went to Mexico. The time before that it was Monte Carlo.
Trent: Monte Carlo. Wow, that's interesting. Is that where he is now?
Nick: Your guess is as good as mine.
Les: So, why have you been looking for Mel?
Max: Why do you care? Look, I don't want any trouble, all right?
Les: Neither do I.
Max: Then take a step back.
Les: What do you want with Melanie?
Max: That's none of your business.
Les: I disagree. Where is she?
Max: So, you're looking for her, too, then?
Les: That's none of your business. You're gonna tell me where she is right now.
Chloe: Roman, I'm sorry, but I couldn't wait outside any longer. I had to know that Lucas was all right.
Roman: That's okay, Chloe. I understand.
Chloe: How are you feeling?
Lucas: Like I got hit by a bus.
Nicole: You look like hell.
Lucas: Thanks, Nicole.
Nicole: Don't worry, Lucas. It's nothing a little TLC can't take care of. Right, Chloe?
Chloe: Lucas, is it true? You're getting out of prison?
Lucas: Can I talk about it?
Roman: I don't see why not. I'll tell you what. I'll give you all some privacy. I'll be back in a few minutes. Just take it easy, okay?
Roman: All right.
Chloe: So, what's going on?
Lucas: I'm being released from prison.
Chloe: How is that possible?
Lucas: Uh, I made a deal with the feds. And in exchange, the governor commuted my sentence.
Nicole: Wow. It looks like you got a lucky break, huh? You know what, Lucas, I don't care what people say. You are a really great guy.
Lucas: Well, thanks, Nicole. I think.
Nicole: I'm serious. I'm just -- I'm glad you're gonna be okay. Rest up.
Lucas: I will.
Nicole: Uh, I-I'm gonna go.
Lucas: What's up with that? That was weird.
Chloe: I don't know. She's been acting strange all day.
Lucas: What happened? Did she suddenly grow a heart?
Chloe: Uh, the jury's still out on that.
Chloe: Okay, you're in pain. I'm gonna go get a nurse.
Lucas: No, I'm fine. I'm fine.
Chloe: You don't look it.
Lucas: I'm better. I'm 10 times better now that you're here.
Chloe: I was so worried when I heard that they brought you in here.
Lucas: I've been thinking about you ever since I left.
Chloe: Me too.
Sami: I can't believe I'm trying to have a civil conversation with you about what to do about our child, and you blame it on Lucas. Lucas has nothing to do with this.
E.J.: Samantha, Lucas has everything to do with this. Everything. Do you remember what it was like living here before Lucas came back on that stupid house-arrest program? I mean, you and I -- we were getting on great. We had a routine set up with the twins. Everything was going fine, and then Lucas turns up and the whole thing goes out the window. I end up becoming somebody who I do not like, and you just become somebody who you're not.
Sami: [Scoffs] That's not true.
E.J.: Yes, it is. Look, he has this very negative effect on both of us.
Sami: No, he doesn't.
E.J.: Yes, he does, Samantha. Look, every time I see you with him, I get jealous. And every time you're with him, you're just a different person.
Sami: What does that mean? I am not a different person.
E.J.: Yes, you are. You become -- you become highly strung. You constantly feel that you have to be proving your worth to Lucas, when, in reality, he should be proving his worth to you.
Sami: Here's the thing. Lucas is back in prison, so he is not in this equation anymore. [Cellphone ringing]
Sami: Excuse me. See, I told you I left my cellphone down here. We better clean this up before Rolf goes crazy. Hello.
Roman: Yeah, Sami.
Sami: Daddy, hi.
Roman: Hey, listen. Now, I know everything is fine, but I'm at the hospital. I just need you to come down here as soon as you can.
Sami: Are you all right?
Roman: Yeah, yeah. I am just fine.
Sami: Then what is it?
Roman: Well, it's Lucas. He's here, but I'll explain everything to you when you arrive. I'm a little surprised Max didn't tell you where he was going.
Nick: Well, I'm not his mother. He's been spending a lot of time with his girlfriend.
Trent: Right. Stephanie.
Trent: Did she go with him?
Trent: Well, I trust if you hear from either one of them, you'll let me know.
Nick: Why are you so curious about where Max went?
Trent: Max is my son.
Nick: Are you -- are you serious?
Trent: He didn't tell you?
Nick: Why are you telling me this right now?
Trent: Because... it's important that you realize why it matters to me where he is. But I want you to keep that to yourself because, uh, we don't want just anyone to know.
Nick: Okay, but, uh, you still haven't told me why you want to know where he went.
Trent: We still have some issues that we need to resolve. Excuse me.
Nicole: Hey, Chloe. So, how's Lucas doing?
Chloe: He's fine. Roman's with him right now.
Nicole: I just went and checked on Philip. He's sleeping, but the nurse said he's doing much better.
Chloe: Oh, thank God. So, are you waiting to see Lucas? 'Cause I think Roman's gonna be awhile.
Nicole: No, actually. I-I came back to see you.
Nicole: I wanted to talk to you about your relationship with Lucas.
Chloe: Honestly, Nicole, I'd rather not.
Nicole: Chloe, I-I need you to listen to me. After all, I was married to him.
Chloe: That's exactly why I don't want to have this discussion.
Nicole: Chloe, please, just hear me, okay? Look, when I-I told Lucas I thought he was a good guy, I really meant it. But I don't think you'll be happy with him, not as long as Sami's in the picture. So, if I were you, I would turn around and walk away. [Cellphone barking] Excuse me. I have to get this. What do you want?
Trent: I just wanted to know if you were making any headway with your assignment.
Nicole: No, I don't know why Max is in France.
Trent: Well, that's disappointing.
Nicole: You know, I'm working on it, okay?
Trent: Work harder.
Roman: Well, doctor says you'll be out of here in a couple days.
Lucas: Couple days? That's it?
Roman: Well, I am sure that I can talk to him, persuade him to give you a few more weeks, if you'd like.
Lucas: No. A couple days is fine.
Roman: That's what I thought. Are you nervous about going home?
Lucas: I don't know where my home is anymore.
Roman: I'm sure you and Sami can find -- find someplace.
Lucas: I love your daughter with all my heart, but after everything that's happened, I just don't know if we can work it out.
Roman: The question is, do you want to be with Sami?
E.J.: Going somewhere?
Sami: Yes. I, um, have to go to the hospital. I need to see Lucas.
E.J.: Oh. Is that the phone call you got earlier?
Sami: Yeah. It was my Dad. I actually don't know what's going on, but he said I need to come to the hospital right away.
E.J.: You sure you need to go right now?
Sami: I need to see Lucas.
Sami: Um, kiss the children for me. I'll see you later.
E.J.: Sure. I hope everything is okay.
Sami: Yeah. Thanks.
Les: Where's Melanie?
Max: I told you I don't know.
Les: I don't believe you.
Max: Why would I be asking for Melanie if I already knew where she was?
Les: You're wasting my time. [Whispering indistinctly]
Les: Is it true you're an American race car driver? I hear people in your profession make a lot of money. As you Americans like to say, "this is your lucky day." I'll stop looking for Mel, but only if you pay what she owes me.
Nicole: You look upset.
E.J.: Is there a -- a reason for your visit?
Nicole: Yeah, there is. I need a -- I need your legal advice.
Sami: Lucas. Oh, my God, Lucas, are you okay?
Lucas: I'm fine.
Sami: What do you mean, you're fine? Who -- who did this to you?
Lucas: Some of my real close friends in prison.
Roman: Lucas, I'll get some coffee. I'll let you tell Sami the good news.
Lucas: All right.
Sami: Uh, what good news?
Lucas: [Sighs] I'm, uh -- I'm being released from prison.
Sami: Well, I mean, I see that you're in the hospital, but --
Lucas: No, I mean, for good. I'm coming home.
Nick: Aha. A video blog. All right, premier party girl, let's see what you got to say.
Melanie: Hey, guys, it's me, back with an update on what's hot and what is not. Um, by the way, if I look a little tired, it's because I just got back from the opening of club 82. One word -- hot. Think fashion week in Paris meets steamy night in Milan. It was absolutely fab. The champagne was flowing, and the men were spending. I'm ready to go back. But before I do, I'm definitely gonna stop by villas, so, see you soon, Andre. Oh, before I forget, tomorrow is Swiss National Day, and I hear Zurich is the place to be. But if you can't make it, I'll see you for street parade next weekend. And I'd like to thank everybody who wished me a happy birthday last weekend. It's nice to know somebody remembered.
Nick: Who are you?
Melanie: There were a few misses on the party scene -- area 55 not hot. Definitely not hot.
Nick: So, what's this girl's story?
Max: That's what I'm trying to figure out.
Nick: But you said you think she might be your sister.
Nick: Oh, my God.
Melanie: So, this is premier party girl signing off.
E.J.: [Sighs] You want my legal advice.
E.J.: I thought you and I were through.
Nicole: We're through having sex but not working together.
E.J.: Okay. My mistake. So, go ahead. What is it I can do for you?
Nicole: You're upset about Sami, aren't you? Okay, so you heard that Lucas is out of prison.
E.J.: Yes, I did.
Nicole: And, apparently, he did some snooping and ratting for the feds in exchange for a commuted prison sentence, so now Lucas is a free man. Well, he will be, once he's released from the hospital.
E.J.: Why is he in hospital?
Nicole: His cover was blown, and the bad guys beat him within an inch of his life.
E.J.: Hmm. That's a shame.
Nicole: Yes, it is. All right, let's just get back to why I'm here.
E.J.: Sure. Let's get back to you. So, you need some legal advice. What about?
Nicole: How do I -- how do I protect myself from a blackmailer?
E.J.: [Sighs deeply] Who's blackmailing you?
Nicole: Trent Robbins.
E.J.: Oh, Trent Robbins. Why am I not surprised?
Nicole: Maybe because Trent is creepy and manipulative.
E.J.: Okay, so, what does Mr. Robbins have on you?
Nicole: Something pretty big. That's why I need your advice, E.J. I need you to help me burn Trent before he burns me.
Sami: So, my dad offered you a deal? You put your life in jeopardy.
Lucas: My prison sentence was commuted. I'm coming home.
Sami: But you could have been killed. I mean, what if the prison guards hadn't gotten to you in time?
Lucas: Sami, I did what I had to do to get out of there.
Sami: And you did it for us, for our family. [Voice breaking] Oh, Lucas, you were willing to risk your life so we could be together. I --
Lucas: No, that's not why I did it. That's not the reason. Not at all.
Max: [Scoffs] You got to be kidding me.
Les: I about money. You pay Mel's debt to me, and I will leave her alone.
Max: Or else...
Les: Or else, you may never see your girlfriend again.
Max: You know, I don't like it when my friends get threatened.
Les: Then pay what Mel owes me.
Max: You must be misinformed because I don't have a whole lot of money.
Les: [Chuckles] So, you're telling me that your girlfriend isn't worth a few hundred euros.
Max: Melanie is not my girlfriend. She is a friend of mine that I haven't seen in a long time.
Les: I don't believe you.
Max: Why am I not surprised?
Stephanie: What's going on?
Nick: I've been trying to get ahold of Max, but he won't answer his phone.
Stephanie: He's in the middle of something. What's up?
Nick: Okay, two things. First of all, Trent has been asking me about him today.
Nick: Yeah. And he volunteered the fact that he's Max's dad.
Stephanie: No way.
Nick: I was just as shocked as you are.
Stephanie: What did you say?
Nick: What could I say? I acted surprised, like I didn't already know.
Stephanie: Max is gonna flip when he hears this. What else did you want me to tell him?
Nick: Tell Max I know how to find his sister.
E.J.: Okay, before we begin discussing any kind of countermeasures, I need to know what it is that he's holding over your head.
Nicole: You're not gonna like it.
E.J.: I'm sure I'm not gonna like it, but you're gonna tell me anyway, darling.
Nicole: All right. When I was a -- when I was still in college and Trent was working on his PhD, we, uh... we got married. I was so naive then. I thought that -- that every bad guy looked like my father -- you know, smarmy, fast-talking, cheap. But not Trent. No, Trent -- Trent was none of those things. He was well educated, came from a good family. He was nice to me. I remember our first date. He -- he brought me flowers, and he gave me a really pretty vase to put them in. He treated me like a lady, and I wasn't used to that. He made me feel special and loved, and six months later, we got married.
E.J.: Did you love him?
Nicole: That time, I thought I did. I'll spare you the gory details, but, uh, a lot of who I am today is because of him and the way he treated me.
E.J.: I'm sorry.
Nicole: Yeah, so am I.
E.J.: So, how did it end?
Nicole: I left. I packed the only suitcase I had, and I walked out that door. And I never thought that I would see that son of a bitch again. And then just my luck, he came back here to Salem.
E.J.: Look, Nicole. Trent...is a perfectly well-respected member of the community. Nobody is gonna look down upon you if they find out that you were once married.
Nicole: But that's the problem, E.J. I never filed for divorce.
Nicole: Trent and I are still married.
Sami: I don't understand.
Lucas: I did it for the kids, so Allie and Will wouldn't have to spend the next 10 years growing up without me.
Sami: But you didn't care if you spent the next 10 years without me.
Lucas: That's not what I said.
Sami: I remember what you said before you left, but I know you were just trying to be noble, you know, the same as last time because you knew you'd be away for so long, and -- and you just didn't want me to wait for you, didn't want me to throw my life away, right? That's why you said those things.
Lucas: No. No, I knew. Even before I left, I knew there was a chance I'd get out of prison. I struck a deal with the feds before I went back in.
Sami: You knew? You knew before you left, and you didn't -- you didn't say anything to me.
Lucas: I didn't want to tell you. I didn't want to upset you.
Sami: Oh, you -- you weren't trying to protect me. You were just keeping me in the dark, just like you did with your great escape routine with your ankle monitor. But you didn't have any trouble confiding in Chloe, did you?
Lucas: This has nothing to do with Chloe. This is about you and me. I couldn't talk to you. I couldn't confide in you after what happened.
Sami: Okay. Okay, let's just -- let's just forget about everything that's happened, okay? It doesn't matter anymore. None of it matters. We can move on, okay? You're gonna get better. You're gonna get better soon, and we can just move forward. You know. Don't you want us to be together, to have a future together?
Lucas: I don't know what I want right now. I just don't want to act like this didn't happen. I don't want to act like nothing bad has happened to us when so much has happened, Sami, that I just can't forget. I can't just get rid of those feelings.
Sami: All right.
Lucas: Ah, damn it.
Sami: Maybe you can't forget, but I know you can forgive. There has got to be a way that we can forgive each other for everything, that we can start over.
Stephanie: You know how to find Melanie?
Nick: Yeah, I do.
Nick: She's -- she's blogger -- premier party girl. Apparently, she's pretty popular among the party crowd.
Stephanie: What? Are you sure?
Nick: I'm 99.9% positive. I went to her blog. I saw her video. She looks exactly like the girl from Max's picture.
Stephanie: That's crazy. Although, I guess I shouldn't be surprised.
Nick: What do you mean?
Stephanie: And the more I'm starting to find out about Max's sister, the more I'm realizing how much trouble she is and how much she probably isn't worth it. Nick? Nick, are you there?
E.J.: Well, that certainly explains the tension between the two of you. Why didn't you tell me this before, the trouble?
Nicole: Because I-I didn't know until he came back into my life. Look, after I left him, I didn't even think about it. I just figured he -- he filed on the grounds that I deserted him or something. And I-I didn't check because I didn't care, and now it has seriously come back to bite me.
E.J.: Okay. You do know that if word of this gets out, your divorce with Victor is completely null and void.
Nicole: Yeah, I know. That is why I need your help.
E.J.: All right. Okay. First things first. What is he blackmailing you for, money?
Nicole: No, no. He has his own.
Trent: All right, so, what is it that he wants you to do?
Nicole: Only some small favors. Well, uh... he did tell me to do one thing that I regret.
E.J.: Yeah, what's that?
Nicole: He forced me to stay away from you.
Max: Look, whatever your name is --
Les: My name's Les.
Max: Well, Les, I don't owe you any explanations, and I'm definitely not giving you any money.
Les: Well, that's a shame 'cause Mel could really use your help right now -- nearly 1,000 euros worth.
Max: I don't think you're hearing me. I'm not giving you anything, all right?
Les: Well, then, you'd better pray that you find Mel before I do.
Sami: So, what do you say, Lucas? Let's make a fresh start, you and me. We could make a go of it.
Lucas: You make it sound so easy.
Sami: It can be easy, if we want it to be.
Lucas: Not for us. Nothing's ever easy for us. It's always been hard. It's always been that way.
Sami: But we love each other, and that is all that matters.
Lucas: You know what, Sami, there are a lot of other things that matter. I have no problem seeing it. You just can't admit it. We just have a lot of problems. In our relationship, we always have.
Sami: Lots of couples have problems. They work through it.
Lucas: I know they have a lot of ups and downs. We have more downs than ups. It's always been like that.
Sami: Maybe. Maybe it has been. But it won't be this time.
Lucas: I can't believe you're saying that. I-I don't understand how you can be so optimistic after everything that's happened.
Sami: Well, I don't understand how you can be so damn negative.
Lucas: I don't want to talk about this anymore, please. I can't go through it anymore. I don't have the energy to deal with it.
Sami: What does that mean? You're saying we're -- we're through?
Lucas: Let's just take a little time. Maybe I should be alone for a while.
Sami: How much time?
Lucas: I don't know, Sami, all right? Maybe just a couple months or something.
Sami: Are you kidding?
Lucas: You should take the time, too, for yourself. Take the time and figure out what you really want.
Sami: There is no question in my mind about what I want. I want you.
Lucas: I can't do this anymore. I'm tired. I'm in pain. Please, just let me rest. I need to sleep.
Sami: Lucas, I --
Lucas: Please, Sami. Please, just leave me alone for a while.
Sami: [Crying] I'm sorry. I'm sorry. Just -- just feel better. I'll, um, give Allie a kiss and hug for you. [Sobbing]
Chloe: Lucas, I feel responsible for what's happened to you.
Lucas: Don't, all right? You're not.
Philip: Whatever happens, I got your back.
Bo: I know you do. I meant what I said, too.
E.J.: It means a lot to me that you trusted me enough to tell me the truth.
Nicole: The truth is, I hated pushing you away.
