Steve: Baby, what's wrong?
Stephanie: You got here so quickly.
Kayla: We were on our way to see Joe at the hospital when we got your message. Oh.
Steve: Sweet girl, what happened?
Stephanie: It's Max. He lied to me. He's gone.
[Train whistle blows]
Max: Mm-hmm. Oui. Oui. Oui.
Hope: "So, when Dorothy, who was an orphan, first came to her, Auntie Em was so startled by the child's laughter that she screamed, 'aah!' And pressed her hand upon her heart whenever Dorothy's merry voice reached her ears."
Bo: There's the loves of my life.
Hope: Good morning.
Bo: Hey, good morning, sunshine. What you reading?
Hope: Oh, "The Wizard of Oz" for the millionth time. How are you doing?
Bo: I feel like my head weighs about 1,000 pounds.
Hope: Tossed and turned all night, huh?
Bo: Yeah, I hope I didn't keep you up.
Hope: No, I slept fine.
Bo: Good for you.
Hope: You have a lot on your mind -- the Hollingsworth case, Victor in the hospital. Is there anything at all I can do to help?
Bo: Yeah, yeah. A hot cup of Joe would be nice.
Hope: Coming right up. Come on. Help Mommy, honey. Good morning. Come on, sweetheart.
Philip: Damn it, Paul. Do what I tell you or I will kill you.
Philip: Dad...I may have really screwed up this time. I did something that could destroy me...and our family. [Monitor beeping rapidly]
Philip: Dad. Dad. Dad. It's his heart. It's his heart. Oh, my God. He's got to be okay.
Lexie: I'm checking that out now.
Kate: What's -- what's happening?
Lexie: Something has clearly agitated him.
[Knock on door]
Bo: Hey, Abe, Theo. Come on in.
Abe: Hope we're not too early.
Bo: No, no, but I was expecting someone a lot prettier.
Abe: [Laughs] Well, Lexie got called into work at the last minute.
Bo: Uh-huh. So you're picking up the slack. Hey, there, Theo. You're looking sharp.
Hope: Abe, hi. What a nice surprise.
Abe: Hey. Well, I know you're expecting Lexie, but I told Bo she got called into the hospital.
Hope: Well, I guess we're just gonna have to put up with you, then, huh? So good to see you. Hey, Theo, I am so excited that we are gonna spend some time together today. Ciara, say hi.
Ciara: Hi, Theo.
Theo: One, two, three, four.
Hope: So...are you guys ready to do some serious playing? Theo, we have the most amazing action figures. Your Uncle Bo would want them.
Bo: It's true.
Hope: Ciara and I went to the toy store yesterday, and we got them just for you. You want to check them out? Come on.
Abe: Take your bag. There you go. Have fun.
Hope: See you in a little while.
Abe: Thank you. Thanks for inviting him.
Bo: Hope did the inviting, but you know we always like having him around.
Abe: So, what's the word on your pop?
Bo: Uh, called the hospital. He's stable.
Abe: Good. We are praying that he pulls through.
Abe: And the Hollingsworth case?
Bo: Making some progress.
Abe: You know, I stopped by the station earlier. I wanted to have another look at that envelope he sent his daughter.
Bo: Yeah, it's, uh, pretty rough for her. You know, reading that letter from her pop. Poor kid.
Abe: It's kind of strange, don't you think?
Bo: What's that?
Abe: That all Paul left was a stash of cash and a somewhat generic farewell letter. After what we saw in that suitcase, I -- anyway, I'm just surprised that's all there is. I just think there's a missing piece of the puzzle.
Kate: Look at you. You should see yourself.
Philip: Mom, what are you doing?
Kate: Well, you remind me of when you were a little boy. Cowlicks all over the place.
Philip: [Sighs] No. No, I am. I'm very tired.
Kate: Okay. So, I take it you slept here last night?
Philip: What gave it away?
Kate: [Chuckles] Well, that was very sweet, and your father would be very touched.
Philip: I didn't want to leave him.
Kate: I just wonder what's going on with him. He's so agitated. Philip. Philip? Did something go on between the two of you that upset him?
Stephanie: I feel so stupid.
Kayla: Stephanie, you cannot blame yourself.
Stephanie: Before he left, he looked me right in the eye and told me that he'd given up on trying to find his sister, but he lied. Why was I so gullible? All I got was this sappy letter. Read it.
Kayla: "Dear Stephanie, I know how much this must hurt, but I had no other choice. I wish you could have come with me, but this was something I had to do alone. When I come back, I'm hoping you can find it in your heart to forgive me. I love you -- Max."
Stephanie: If he loved me, he wouldn't have done this.
Steve: Well, that's not necessarily true. Come on, let's be fair, baby.
Stephanie: "Fair"? Nothing about this is fair. I should be with him. He should want me to be with him. You know what? Maybe he doesn't trust me anymore. Before he left, he came to you for advice instead of me. If he had come to me first, I could have convinced him to take me with him. He would have realized --
Steve: I told him not to.
Steve: When Max came to me for advice about going to Europe and finding his sister, I told him not to take you with him.
Abe: You don't find that to be the least bit odd?
Bo: What, that all Paul left his daughter was a letter and a bunch of money? No, not really.
Abe: Well, in that letter of Paul's that we found in his suitcase, he assures Morgan that he was leaving her something to protect her. And don't get me wrong -- that's a lot of money.
Bo: Well, you know guys like that. They feel money can buy protection, and he did say in that letter that he wanted his daughter to be free from her mom, financially independent.
Abe: I don't know. Something is off. You know, I've been a police officer for over 25 years, and I have learned to trust my gut.
Bo: We've all learned that about you. That's why you're the commish.
Abe: But you don't seem to have the same instinct on this. So you're satisfied with what we've got?
Bo: All I want to do right now is find out what happened to Hollingsworth, you know, give his daughter some peace of mind.
Hope: Here you go.
Abe: Oh, thank you.
Hope: The kids are playing really well.
Abe: That's great.
Bo: Listen, I better get my day started. I'm gonna head to the hospital and check on Victor.
Hope: Tell him I said hello.
Bo: Okay. We'll continue this conversation later.
Abe: You got it.
Hope: Drive carefully.
Bo: I will.
Hope: How's the coffee?
Abe: Mmm, this is perfect. Thank you.
Hope: Were you and Bo talking about the Hollingsworth case?
Abe: Yeah. I just can't shake the feeling that there's something off. You know, that last package that he left...
Hope: You think there's more to it?
Abe: [Chuckles] I tell you, there's nothing about this case that makes any kind of sense. Maybe it's just me.
Hope: What do you mean?
Abe: I feel like I'm being pulled in...all sorts of different directions. I'm not as objective as I should be and...I tend to overreact sometimes.
Hope: You mean because of what's happening at home?
Abe: Well, it's not that we're not able to handle anything. We are. We're -- we're doing fine.
Hope: I know this is a very tough time for you and Lexie. You're obviously facing an awful lot of challenges. Theo is so blessed to have such extraordinary parents. Truly.
Abe: Your support means a lot to us, Hope.
Hope: We love you...very much. We love Theo. We're a part of this as well.
Abe: Thank you. I just wish that I...
Hope: What? Talk to me.
Abe: You just said it. Lexie and I -- we're facing a lot of challenges to give Theo the best life that we can. And if we can't work together...
Hope: Abe...I-I'm sure this has put a strain on your marriage.
Abe: You're right, but Theo is our priority, and if we're gonna be strong for our son, then we have to see things the same way. We have to be there for each other.
Kate: Philip, talk to me. Something happened between you and your father.
Philip: Nothing happened. I just --
Kate: You just what? What? Tell me.
Philip: I opened up to him last night... confided in him.
Kate: In his condition?
Philip: I wasn't even sure he could hear me.
Kate: I don't understand. Why didn't you confide in me?
Philip: Because it has nothing to do with you. Like I said, it's between me and Dad. I'm sorry, but just respect my privacy.
Kate: No, no, no, no, no. No. Maybe you don't want to talk to me, but if you're in trouble somehow, you need to talk to me.
Philip: Dad was always a genius at doing things his way, making up his own rules, improvising effortlessly. And he never got caught because he always flew under the radar.
Kate: What does this have to do with you?
Philip: The legacy was left in my hands, and when I was given the opportunity to run with it, I blew it. I let my father down.
Abe: You know, Lexie and I have been through some rough stretches before, but this is different because it involves Theo.
Hope: Of course it is.
Abe: We had to hire a nanny when we took him out of school. And she can't be expected to drive him to appointments with specialists.
Hope: It's got to be tough, the scheduling alone, especially with the two of you working.
Abe: Burning the candle at both ends.
Hope: Yeah. It'll ease up soon, won't it?
Abe: It's difficult to say. We're trying to find a good educational program for Theo.
Ciara: Mommy, Mommy.
Hope: Come here, what is it? What's wrong? Are you hurt, huh?
Ciara: Theo is mean.
Kate: What are you talking about? How did you let your father down?
Philip: I've said too much.
Kate: No, don't you do that to me. Don't you shut me out. You're my son. You can't say something that provocative and not expect me to react. [Footsteps approaching]
Bo: Everything okay?
Philip: Yeah. Fine.
Bo: How's Victor doing?
Kate: Well, his heart monitor was going crazy, but he's stabilized now.
Bo: His heart mon-- what happened?
Kate: I don't know. Lexie's in there with him.
Philip: Mom, this coffee's horrible. Let's go downstairs and get some. Let Bo have some time alone with Dad.
Bo: Appreciate that.
Kate: All right. [Monitor beeping]
Bo: Hey, Lex.
Bo: How's he doing?
Lexie: Something must have upset him before, a dream maybe. His EKG readings were spiking pretty high.
Bo: But he's okay now?
Lexie: Yeah, he seems to be.
Bo: Oh, good.
Lexie: Well, listen, I'll leave you alone with your father.
Bo: Okay, thanks.
Lexie: Oh, but don't stay too long. He needs his rest.
Bo: Okay. Um...I'll try not to do anything to upset him.
Victor: Well, I'm already upset.
Bo: Victor? What is it? What's wrong?
Victor: As if...as if you didn't know.
Bo: Come on, uh...you got to try to relax.
Victor: Tell me about Hollings-- Hollingsworth.
Bo: Victor, come on. Don't talk about that right now. You need to get well.
Victor: You've got the goods on Philip, don't you? [Camera shutter clicks]
Stephanie: You told Max not to take me?
Steve: Yeah. I didn't think it was a good idea.
Stephanie: And what gave you the right to make that decision?
Steve: [Sighs] Well, you're my daughter. I have every right to protect you.
Stephanie: He should not have gone on this trip alone.
Steve: Why not? And why do you have to go running after him?
Stephanie: Because you told him not to take me with him.
Steve: Oh, come on, baby. That doesn't make any sense. You know what? If you had gone, all I would be doing is sitting here worrying about you.
Stephanie: I can't believe you're treating me like this.
Steve: Like what?
Kayla: You know, Stephanie, your father, he has other reasons for encouraging Max not to take you on this trip.
Stephanie: Okay. Name one.
Steve: I just didn't want you to go, okay?
Stephanie: This isn't about me staying or going. It's about you making that decision for me.
Kayla: Come on, Stephanie. [Cellphone rings] Who is it? Hello? Mom, hi. No, we came by the pub to see Stephanie. We're gonna go see little Joe at the hospital in a few minutes. Yeah, I'll do that. Um, yeah, I-I love you, too. Okay, bye.
Stephanie: Are you okay?
Kayla: Well, now I'm torn. Does Grandma know that Max has gone off to look for this sister?
Stephanie: I don't think so.
Kayla: I have to tell her.
Steve: Well, you can't do that, Kayla.
Kayla: She's his mother.
Steve: Well, that's why it's his call. If he didn't want her to know, we have to respect that.
Victor: Philip made a mistake...and you got him.
Bo: How do you know?
Victor: Not important.
Bo: Well, it is to me.
Victor: Philip knows there's a tape of him and Paul. Do you have it? This is your brother, Bo. I'm talking about our family.
Bo: No, we're talking about a potential murder.
Victor: You promised to protect him.
Bo: I know. I know...what I promised.
Victor: You're an honorable man.
Bo: I'm also a cop. Withholding evidence -- that is not honorable. I don't care whose butt is on the line.
Victor: Get out of here.
Bo: I took an oath to uphold the law.
Victor: The thing is...it's not the same for you. At least tell...
Victor: The evidence against Philip implicates him -- is it outright?
Bo: No. Guilt is inferred.
Victor: Then I'm begging you, don't damn your brother. He didn't kill Paul.
Bo: That's the thing -- I don't know what he did or didn't do.
Victor: Just hold off. That's all I'm asking here.
Bo: Victor, I can't do that. [Monitor beeping rapidly] Victor? Victor, take it easy.
Lexie: Bo, I need you out of the room now.
Abe: Well, a cease-fire has been successfully negotiated.
Hope: Well done, commissioner.
Abe: Took a little bit of bribery, but I think I can safely say they are playing peacefully if separately.
Abe: I told Theo if he can get along with Ciara, we'd get some ice cream. That's his favorite.
Hope: Actually, you know what? It's my favorite as well.
Hope: I'm really sorry that Ciara upset him.
Abe: Oh, Theo's being difficult. He didn't want to share. Ciara got upset. It's her house.
Hope: Even still, all of that aside, she can be a little impatient herself.
Abe: I get upset with and impatient with Theo as well. More often than not.
Hope: Don't be so hard on yourself.
Abe: You know, I try not to, especially now that I know what I'm dealing with. Maybe I don't know what I'm dealing with yet. You know, autism is -- is a very complex disability. It's a spectrum disorder. It affects different people to varying degrees. [Chuckles] Well, I guess you can tell I've been doing my research.
Hope: Yes, of course you have. Actually, so have I. I've checked out a few websites myself.
Abe: Oh, and Lexie -- you should see the stacks of books she has by her bedstand. She reads for hours.
Hope: I'm sure.
Abe: She knew something was off even before we were certain.
Hope: I know she did.
Abe: I was oblivious. I just saw my son. He was...caring, loving, sweet, maybe a little shy, a bit withdrawn. Hope, you know, I always consider myself to be the kind of man that would deal with things head on. But when it came to my little boy...I-I-I just could not see him with objective eyes. And Lexie, she was -- she was just the opposite. She was tough and strong right from the beginning.
Hope: Abe, I mean, everyone deals with things differently.
Abe: Well, I was wrong. I should have been right alongside Lexie to see the truth, but I refused. I wouldn't talk. I wouldn't accept it. I let her down.
Lexie: What happened in there, Bo?
Bo: I-I'm not really sure. We were talking, and then he started having trouble breathing, and the monitors went crazy.
Kate: Is everything all right?
Lexie: Victor's heart rate spiked again.
Kate: Oh, my God. Why does this keep happening?
Lexie: Victor is very sensitive to stress right now, so when you're around him, it is extremely important that you stick with small talk -- the bad hospital food, the weather, I don't care, but nothing that could cause him even the slightest distress. Please.
Philip: Only small talk from now on.
Lexie: Yes. Dr. Jonas will be taking over my shift. I'm heading home, but call me if you need me.
Kate: Thank you, Lexie.
Kate: You seem upset.
Bo: Why wouldn't I be? I thought he might have been having another stroke or a heart attack or something.
Kate: Did he say anything during this latest episode?
Bo: Why don't you talk to your son?
Kate: Okay, that is it. No more games. I want to know what's going on, and I want to know now.
Stephanie: How could you do this to me?
Steve: I was just looking out for you, baby.
Stephanie: You were interfering. You had no right.
Kayla: You know, your father was just --
Stephanie: I don't want to hear it, okay? I don't want to hear if he was trying to help me or protect me, because it doesn't matter. It was wrong. So, what did you tell him? That I would hold him back? That I was too high-maintenance?
Steve: I didn't say anything like that.
Stephanie: Then what did you tell him to make him not take me?
Steve: [Sighs] I just let him know I didn't like the idea.
Stephanie: Well, that's too bad because I'm going with Max anyway and you can't stop me.
Kayla: You know, Steve...I'm having a hard time seeing why we shouldn't support her on this.
Stephanie: Why aren't you saying anything?
Steve: You know, I just realized...I haven't had any practice at this. I wasn't there on your first day of kindergarten. I didn't get to say goodbye. Or when you went on your first date... when you left home to race. I missed all that. So if I'm a little overprotective, maybe it's because I just haven't had any practice at letting go.
Stephanie: I'm sorry for being hard on you. I do love you for caring so much.
Steve: Yeah, a little too much sometimes, though.
Stephanie: No. But...you are gonna have to go cold turkey on that overprotective-dad thing. I'm a grown woman, Papa.
Stephanie: And if there is one thing that I've learned from the two of you...it's how to support the person that I love.
[Camera shutter clicking]
Max: Hey. Hey, what's with the camera? [Clicking continues]
Remy: [French accent] Sorry.
Max: Yeah, I know you're sorry, but why do you keep taking pictures? Who the hell are you?
Remy: Name's Remy.
Max: Okay, Remy, what's your deal? Are you some whacked-out tourist, and why do you keep taking pictures when I told you to stop?
Remy: I'm paparazzi, Max. That's what we do. You're celebrity here. Big-time race car driver.
Max: For God sake, man, just give me a break here.
Remy: I saw you at the station and I follow you into the train. Oh, what brings you back to the continent?
Max: No, no, no, I'm sorry. I'm not doing an interview right now.
Remy: Oh, come on. Just a quick sound bite. You know how much money I can make off these shots?
Max: Yeah, enough to quit taking these useless pictures and do something worthwhile with your time.
Remy: Funny man.
Max: Look, I'm so-- okay, look, I'm sorry. I'm not a race car driver anymore, and I would prefer to keep my pictures out of the news and the internet.
Remy: That may prove to be a problem, Max. Think you can angle your head a little to the right?
Max: No, I said stop taking pictures. In fact, I'm gonna have to ask you to delete the ones you already have. Delete them.
Remy: Certainement. Um, et un moment.
Max: Hey. Hey!
Hope: Hey, you're being awfully hard on yourself.
Abe: [Chuckles] You know, I-I just want the three of us to be close like a family. Ever since Lexie, um -- ever since she had her affair, it just hasn't been the same. I find that very tough to put behind me.
Hope: Lexie mentioned to me that the two of you were, you know, um...seeing a marriage counselor.
Abe: Yeah, well, that's been helpful somewhat. You know, he makes us talk, at least during the sessions.
Hope: And what happens when you get home and it's just the two of you? Do you keep talking?
Abe: No, no. There's a lot of silence between us these days.
Hope: Well, you know, let me share something with you. When Bo and I were going through a very tough time, the only thing that really, truly seemed to get us through was communication. No matter how upset we were or how many things I threw at him -- and God knows, you know I threw things -- we talked it out, no matter what.
Abe: Well, talking's good. It clears the air. But whenever Lexie and I have a conversation, it...gets pretty nasty very quickly.
Hope: Abe, Abe, Abe, didn't you just finish telling me how impressed you are with her strength, her courage? I think it's time that you told her that.
Kate: I know that you're hiding something.
Philip: I'm tired. I'm going home.
Kate: No! No. I am your mother, and if there is something about to come out that will hurt you and that will hurt your father, then I need to know so that I can help you.
Philip: You can't. It's too late.
Bo: I'm sorry I disappointed you, Victor, but...what you've asked me to do...it's in moral opposition to everything I believe in.
Victor: And destroying your brother's life...does that jive with your morals? Philip didn't kill anyone. You're a cop, Bo. Prove your brother's innocence. [Beeping]
Max: "Max, I just want to let you know that I'm not mad at you and that I love you. Hope your trip is a success. I'm with you in spirit. Yours -- Stephanie."
Remy: Yeah, it's Remy. Guess who I snapped today. Max Brady, you know, the race car driver? He's back in France, headed to Marseille.
Kayla: You know, um, there's something I wanted to tell you. Before what you did with Stephanie, I know how hard that was. And I'm proud of you.
Steve: She was really mad at me, wasn't she?
Kayla: I'm sorry if I made things more difficult.
Steve: What are you talking about?
Kayla: Well, we always agreed that we would have a united front, and...I feel like I let you down because I...I took her position.
Steve: Oh, I get it, sweetness. You took her position because she was right. She's an adult. It's her life. It's her decision.
Kayla: She's a smart, strong little girl.
Steve: I know she is. And I got a lot of faith in her. I'm telling you, I do. It's just that I have a hard time letting go, like I said.
Kayla: You'll get the hang of it. And besides, you know, she and max love each other. And I-I think that she just wants to be there with him on his journey.
Steve: Yeah. They're just looking for a young girl, right?
Steve: It's not like they're going to Somalia or taking up cave diving or something.
Kayla: Right. It's just a little trip to the South of France. Sounds kind of wonderful, actually, doesn't it? What's that look?
Kayla: Just say it.
Steve: I d-- I do. I wish I could have gone with her.
Kayla: Oh, there's that overprotective kicking in again.
Steve: I got to get a handle on it.
Kayla: You know, you are. I mean, you will. Look, it's okay. It comes from a loving place because you care so much, and that's a good thing. Letting go is hard. For me, too. But Stephanie and baby Joe eventually -- the only way they're gonna build a self-confidence is if they go out into the world and make their own way. And if we hold on too tight, we deprive them of that.
Steve: So...we'll let Stephanie have her adventure.
Kayla: You know what? I think for her it's more about love and support than about an adventure. Wherever Max is, that's where she wants to be.
Steve: I can relate.
Steve: Yeah. 'Cause wherever you are...that's where I want to be.
Lexie: Hey, hi.
Hope: Oh, Lex, so good to see you, sweetheart. Come on in. Your handsome husband's still here.
Lexie: I see.
Hope: Come on in.
Lexie: Where's Theo?
Hope: Oh, the kids are in the other room playing.
Lexie: Oh. Thank you so much for having him over.
Hope: Oh, no, no, no. For nothing. Are you kidding me? It was such a pleasure. Any time.
Abe: I didn't know you were getting off work so early.
Lexie: Yeah, I did.
Hope: How is Victor?
Lexie: He's had a rough day, but we have him stabilized for now.
Hope: Oh, Bo's been so worried. He tossed and turned all night.
Abe: And my wife hasn't had much sleep lately, either. You want to go home?
Lexie: Yes, sounds good.
Hope: I'll just grab the kids.
Lexie: Thanks, Hope.
Hope: Okay, sure.
Lexie: [Sighs] I didn't realize you were staying. Otherwise, I would have gone straight home.
Abe: I should have called you. I'm sorry.
Lexie: How's Theo been? With Ciara, I mean.
Abe: Fine. They had an argument earlier, but we were able to sort it out. They've been playing quietly for quite a while.
Lexie: Oh, God.
Abe: Lex, th-there's something that I haven't told you enough -- and maybe lately I haven't told you at all -- how proud I am of you. You're an inspiration to me -- how you handle this situation with Theo, your strength, the way you've adapted. You're just such a terrific mother. And you're...you're a very strong person. I've learned a lot of important things from you.
Lexie: Wow. That means a lot to me, Abe.
Abe: I should tell you more often.
Lexie: I know you've been struggling. I know you've been worrying about Theo, wanting to do everything you can for him. [Sighs] I'm sorry. I've just been so caught up in making plans and trying to figure all this out, I-I've been insensitive to what you're going through.
Abe: Thank you. I love you.
Lexie: Oh, sweetheart, I love you, too.
Abe: And I tell you, we are going to work through this. You and Theo are the world to me.
Kate: It's never too late, baby. You can never give up hope.
Philip: Mom, please. You don't understand.
Kate: Them make me understand. Talk to me.
Philip: You'll know soon enough.
Victor: Whatever you have on Philip...leave it here with me and...walk away. [Monitor beeping rhythmically]
Bo: Vic-- okay, all right, Victor, okay. Take it easy. Take it easy. Here it is. This is the tape.
Ava: To the future and starting over.
John: And to the beautiful woman that made it all happen.
Nicole: Are we done here?
Trent: No, we're not. I need you to do a little detective work for me.
Kate: Am I making you uncomfortable?
