Nicole: You know, Victor's at the hospital with Kate. And I'm pretty sure he'll be gone most of the night.
E.J.: Well, um...maybe we should...take advantage of the old man's absence.
Nicole: Does that take your mind off your troubles?
E.J.: Oh, I don't have any troubles.
John: Please wait.
Marlena: I-I'm just here to collect the rest of my things and I will be out of your way in no time.
John: I don't want you out of my way.
Marlena: No? Do you want to invite me in for a nightcap with you and your lady friend so I can be humiliated all over again?
John: Ava's gone. I just...want you to hear me out.
Marlena: Fine. I'm listening.
Philip: Morgan, this isn't right.
Stephanie: What do you want him to say?
Max: Tell the truth. Go on. I want to hear him say it... that he's my Father.
Nicole: I have an idea.
E.J.: I kind of have a couple of ideas of my own.
Nicole: Let's go upstairs to Victor's room.
E.J.: Really? Would that turn you on?
Nicole: [Chuckles] Only because he'd hate it and he'd want to strangle us both with his bare hands.
E.J.: You're quite a sick little puppy, aren't you?
Nicole: What are your ideas?
E.J.: Well, my idea is that we stay exactly where we are, because I don't really see any sense in wasting a lot of energy running up a flight of stairs.
E.J.: Especially when we have such a wonderfully comfortable couch and a beautiful fireplace right behind us.
John: I was going to call you, but...this is even better, face-to-face.
Marlena: Can you say what you want to say so I can leave, please?
John: Okay. My behavior at the pub was wrong. You simply asked me to go out to dinner and I...very rudely turned you down.
Marlena: I shouldn't have done that. You made it very clear that you had moved on. I should have just left it right there.
Marlena: "No"? Well, in any event, I did make quite a fool of myself.
John: No. It was me. I didn't turn you down because I didn't want to be with you. I turned you down because... because you had hurt me and I simply wanted to hurt you back.
Marlena: Oh. I see.
John: It was childish.
Marlena: What about Ava? Was she a part of your plan to hurt me back, or is she someone that you have genuine feelings for?
John: Ava's -- she's a friend. I don't have that many.
Marlena: Well, whose fault is that? You said you were paying me back for the way that I had...hurt you by the way I treated you. I hope you know that was not intentional. I never, ever meant to hurt you.
John: I do know that. And I also realize that...you have been hurt more than anyone. You lost someone that you loved. And I have been flip and callous about it, and for that...I am deeply sorry.
Chloe: I guess we all had the same idea -- an invigorating walk on the pier. And why not? It's such a nice night. Not too hot, gentle breeze.
Chloe: But let's not waste time talking about the weather.
Philip: Look --
Chloe: W-w-wait. Let me guess which tired, old clichés you're gonna throw at me. Oh, I know. Uh, "this isn't what it looks like. We're just friends."
Philip: Can we not make a scene?
Chloe: Oh, this isn't a scene. This is a prologue. I'm just getting warmed up.
Stephanie: Is it true? Are you Max's father?
Dean Robbins: Yes. I would like you both to leave now. I-I need a little time.
Max: To what? Lick your wounds? Are you feeling sorry for yourself? Are you gonna play the victim here, Dean Robbins?
Dean Robbins: I'm not playing anything. I need to process this information.
Max: Yeah, well, I'm gonna need to do some processing of my own, and like it or not, I'm gonna need you to help me with that.
Dean Robbins: I -- there's not much that I can tell you. But I did come to see you...when you were still very little... here in Salem.
Max: Go on.
Dean Robbins: And I learned that...Frankie Donner had taken you under his wing, that you'd been adopted by the Brady's, and, uh...so I found out where they lived, where they went to church.
Max: So you watched me. You snuck around. You hid in the shadows.
Dean Robbins: Something like that.
Max: And then you left for a second time because even though you were curious...you still didn't give a damn about me, did you?
Dean Robbins: You have no idea what you're ta--
Max: You don't get to say anything like that to me. I'm the one that was abandoned.
Dean Robbins: I knew you were well taken care of.
Max: So that makes it right? You could feel good about yourself because I was well taken care of?
Dean Robbins: Look, you're angry. That's very understandable.
Max: Well, you know, I'm so glad that you understand.
Stephanie: Calm down.
Max: No, this bastard didn't give a damn then and he doesn't give a damn now.
Dean Robbins: You've had a good life, right? You were surrounded by people who loved you and nourished you.
Max: Yeah, I've had a great life. So what? That still does not change the fact that I have the blood of a coward running through me.
Max: No, you wanted to know, remember? So now you're gonna know everything -- the good, the bad, everything. And you -- you are gonna start talking now. I want to know why you left me. I want to know why you didn't give a damn about your own son.
Dean Robbins: I don't have to justify myself to you.
Max: The hell you don't.
John: You're not responding.
Marlena: I'm stunned.
John: Will you accept my apology?
Marlena: Yes, I will. I-I do. I'm, uh, touched by that.
John: Still, that isn't enough.
Marlena: No, it's fine. That's enough, John.
John: I'd like to make it up to you somehow.
Marlena: It isn't necessary. It's just fine.
John: I insist.
Marlena: What do you want to do?
John: If you could stay... I could have cook prepare a fabulous dinner for us.
Marlena: I don't know, John.
John: And the problem is?
Marlena: What about Ava?
John: I told you, she left. She's not hiding here if that's what you think. So, what is it?
Marlena: I'm a little thrown. A while ago, you said you had moved on and I should do the same thing.
John: I thought I was clear in my explanation. I only said that to upset you. There is nothing going on with Ava and me.
Marlena: I don't know about that. I've seen the way she looks at you. She would like there to be more than just friendship.
John: Ava -- no.
Marlena: Maybe you should take -- never mind.
John: Never mind what?
Marlena: Maybe you should be careful there. We've seen how she behaved with Steve. When she gets her claws into somebody, she won't let go. I don't think you want that, somebody who is obsessed with you.
Philip: Will you please calm down?
Chloe: You know what? You're right. Why should I care that you're making out with another woman? Just because you and I are sleeping together doesn't mean I own you, does it?
Philip: This isn't the time, Chloe.
Chloe: The time for what?! To discuss our little affair? Oh, you mean because Morgan is here. Oh, dear, that was rather tactless of me, wasn't it?
Morgan: Look, hon, the kiss, it just happened, okay? I was upset.
Chloe: Please spare me.
Morgan: All I'm saying is it wasn't planned.
Chloe: Of course not.
Philip: Chloe, you're making way too much of this.
Chloe: Do you think I'm stupid? And you've been after Philip since the first time you laid eyes on him.
Morgan: Okay, you know what? I don't need to stand here for this. Philip, if you want to talk to me, call me.
Philip: Wait. Will you be okay?
Morgan: Yeah, I'll be fine.
Chloe: Weren't you leaving?
Philip: Chloe...stop it now.
Dean Robbins: I'm not the enemy, Max. I understand your anger and your pain, but the past is just that. It's the past.
Max: The past is just the past. That's good. I've never heard that one before.
Dean Robbins: I'm not gonna fight with you.
Max: No, no, no, no, no. I'm trying to process the whole "past is just the past" theory. Because if that's true, then you wouldn't mind it if I ran your illustrious past by the faculty at Salem U. I'm sure they'd love to find out what kind of a man the dean of their physics department really is.
Dean Robbins: What are you talking about?
Max: Steph, would you like to find out about his epic past? How he seduced my Mother?
Stephanie: That's enough.
Max: No, not by a long shot.
Dean Robbins: Listen to your girlfriend.
Max: You got her pregnant. She had your baby. You didn't want anything to do with her or the kid -- that would be me -- and you were abusive to her.
Dean Robbins: That is not true!
Max: Do not interrupt me! I want to know about my Mother. All I have are a few memories of her, destroyed by her love for you.
Stephanie: What happened to her?
Max: She died. So I was orphaned, left to the care of some foster parents who were, let's just say, less than loving. Not exactly the idyllic childhood, until I was taken in by Frankie and the Brady's. So now here we are, face-to-face, and I've thought that I should feel this connection, some sort of love, some gut instinct that I can't control because you're my Father...my flesh and blood. But I'm standing here and all I feel is hate for you. How do you feel, Dad?
Dean Robbins: [Sighs] How much?
Max: Excuse me?
Dean Robbins: How much will it take to keep you quiet?
Nicole: Wait. Wait, wait, wait, wait.
E.J.: You were right. Do you want to take this upstairs? It's getting a little uncomfortable down here. We don't want anybody walking in on us, do we? Much less chance upstairs. Nobody will know.
Nicole: You know what? Maybe we shouldn't do this at all.
Philip: I mean it, Chloe. You don't want to do this.
Chloe: All I want to do now is warn Morgan that you don't really care about her father because he's working for John Black.
Morgan: Okay, first of all, you have no right to talk about my Father. And as far as Philip goes, he has a good heart. John Black was trying to ruin my Father's life, and he was just trying to help.
Chloe: I'm sorry, Morgan, but I think Philip has ulterior motives.
Philip: Stop it.
Morgan: Okay, you know what? It is obvious that y'all have something that you need to talk about, and I don't need to be a part of it. Philip, I understand what you were trying to do, and I appreciate it. Thank you.
Philip: What the hell is going on here?
John: So, what do you say, Blondie? Dinner? Just the two of us.
Marlena: I'd like that.
John: Sensational. What's your preference? French? Italian? Inuit?
Marlena: Surprise me. [Cellphone ringing]
John: I need to take this. Excuse me. This better be good.
Guy: It's Hollingsworth, sir.
John: What is it?
Guy: Looks like he's getting ready to leave town.
John: How do you know?
Guy: He's emptied his bank account, packed his bags.
John: I see.
Guy: What do you want us to do?
John: I'll get back to you. Oh, Paul. You're not going anywhere.
Max: You're offering me money to stay quiet?
Dean Robbins: Name your price.
Max: You think I can be bought?
Dean Robbins: $10,000.
Stephanie: Oh, that's it. I can't -- I can't stand here and listen to you bribe your own son. It is making me sick.
Dean Robbins: No, I am asking my son to consider keeping quiet about this. And I am willing to help him financially to motivate him to protect us both.
Stephanie: My God, he is your son. And all you want to do is keep his mouth shut so that people don't know he exists?
Dean Robbins: Why would either of us want this to be made public?
Stephanie: Because Max is not only incredibly gifted, but he is an amazing and decent human being and any man would be proud to have him as a son.
Dean Robbins: Really? A bartender who dabbles in physics?
Stephanie: Shut up, okay? You don't even know him. Max is brilliant.
Max: You know what? Forget it, Stephanie, okay? I don't care if I'm brilliant, and I don't care if the fact is that you are my Father, because I don't want to be anything like you. My real Father was Shawn Brady. He was a man of substance and character and lived a simple but noble life helping people, making the world a better place because of his kindness and generosity.
Dean Robbins: Okay, I understand why you would want to disassociate yourself from me. In that case, why don't you reconsider my offer and keep quiet about this?
Max: You -- you -- you -- you don't listen very well, do you?
Dean Robbins: Max, there's a lot at stake here for both of us.
Stephanie: Don't do it. You can't take his money.
Max: I know I can't. But maybe we can work a little something out.
Stephanie: Max, no.
Dean Robbins: Yeah, tell me.
Max: I want to know who the girl in the picture is. And if you tell me that, then I'll think about your offer.
E.J.: [Stutters] I am -- sorry, I-I don't understand.
Nicole: What's to understand? We're -- we're not doing this.
E.J.: Ok-- clearly, but I mean, I th-- I mean, I thought that we were --
Nicole: Well, you thought wrong.
E.J.: Well, now I'm completely confused.
Nicole: Yeah, there's a lot of that going around.
E.J.: Okay, let's just stop for a second, please. Just slow down, all right? What just happened? Did I do something to upset you? I mean, as far as I was aware, we were just distracting each other.
Nicole: Well, that's not happening now, obviously.
E.J.: Okay, but I don't understand. I mean, look, I was upset about Samantha. You were upset about -- I don't know -- whatever it was that you were upset about.
Nicole: And look at me now. Look, I'm not upset anymore. In fact, I'm in a great mood. You know, I'm positive, confident, on top of the world. Can't you tell?
E.J.: No, the only thing that I can tell, Nicole, is that you're suddenly becoming really hostile.
Nicole: Which shows how little you know about me. I want you to leave, E.J.
E.J.: You want me to leave.
Nicole: Yeah, as in go. Go home. E.J., go home to Sami.
E.J.: Yeah, I already told you I'm not going there.
Nicole: I know what you told me. You're still in love with Sami. You're in love with her, E.J. Yeah, that's what I thought. You thought you could just say the word and I'd jump into bed with you.
E.J.: What are you talking about? I never made that assumption at all.
Nicole: Are you sure about that? You look shocked that I'm not as much of a tramp as you think I am.
E.J.: Nicole, I don't think you're some kind of tramp. Please.
Nicole: I want you to leave, E.J. Get out!
John: If that's what it takes. I'm gonna have to call you back.
Marlena: I'm sorry. Am I interrupting?
John: No, I was finished. Can I get you a drink?
Marlena: Uh, something light. Yes, thanks.
John: Sake imported from Okinawa. How does that sound?
Marlena: Interesting. I'll just have a sherry.
John: As you wish.
Marlena: That phone call seemed to upset you.
John: It's just business. Nothing urgent.
Marlena: Thank you.
John: New beginnings.
Marlena: New beginnings.
John: I'm glad you decided to stay for dinner.
Marlena: So am I. John... I hope you know...how much it means to me that you apologized, that you cared about my feelings. That was very kind of you.
Chloe: I know that we had an arrangement, Philip. And I know that our real feelings weren't supposed to enter into it, but I'm afraid that mine did. I'm sorry, but I'm starting to have feelings for you.
Philip: Well, that wasn't supposed to happen.
Chloe: It did.
Philip: I care about you, too. And the last thing I want to do is make you angry or jealous.
Chloe: I'm acting like a damn fool, aren't I?
Philip: No. No, you're just telling me how you really feel.
Chloe: Well, that's nice, but the truth is you don't have the same feelings for me that I have for you.
E.J.: [Clears throat]
Pete: Hey, what can I get you, man?
E.J.: Can I get a single malt, double, neat?
Pete: Coming up.
E.J.: Hello, Tony. You look well.
Tony: Well, I'm feeling even better. Like I could play midfield for arsenal. It's amazing what a few days in the tropical sun will do for a man.
E.J.: So, the, uh, wedding was a success?
Tony: Oh, it was a smash hit.
Pete: Here you go.
E.J.: Thank you.
Tony: Could I have a martini please? Shaken but not stirred. [Sighs]
E.J.: [Clears throat] Well, how's Anna?
Tony: Oh, she's determined to get scuba certified. Can you believe that? And her only ambition in life is to make her new husband deliriously happy. Am I lucky or what?
E.J.: Very. I'm sorry. No, seriously...I'm really glad that life's treating you well.
Tony: But you're not so well, eh?
Pete: There you go.
Tony: Thank you. Well, here's to my kid brother. May you find happiness as well.
Tony: But not too soon, with your gloomy demeanor.
E.J.: I'm sorry, Tony. I'm just, um...indulging in a little bit of self-pity right now.
Tony: You're wallowing in it from where I'm sitting. Oh, poor E.J. here you are with your great looks, your quick wit, the DiMera ambition, and you're a total flop when it comes to love?
E.J.: [Chuckles] Thank you, Tony. You really know how to cheer a guy up, don't you?
Tony: You know, I think what I'm going to do, I think I'm gonna take a stab at making you happy. Seeing that you've cast a pall on this entire establishment, why don't we get a table and we can talk all about it? Come on.
E.J.: All right.
Nicole: Nice lecture, E.J., but been there, done that. Something always goes wrong, just like in my love life.
E.J.: Look, you can't compare the two, okay? Your love life is just timing. You just haven't found the right guy just yet.
Nicole: The right guy... doesn't exist, at least not for me.
E.J.: Well, I think you've just been looking in all the wrong places.
Victor: Nicole? I'm surprised to see you sitting there. I would think you'd be pillaging the silverware.
Nicole: How's Kate?
Victor: Do you really care how another human being is doing?
Nicole: Come on, Victor. I'm not in the mood.
Victor: Well, to answer your question, her condition seems to be improving for now. What on earth is wrong with you? You got your settlement. I'm very relieved to finally be extricated from such a nightmare of a marriage.
Nicole: Yes, I know, Victor. I heard you the first 36,000 times.
Victor: Well, now, there's the woman that I loathe. I think I'll join you for a drink. We should toast our mutual liberation. Oh, I get it.
Nicole: Excuse me?
Victor: The reason for your dour mood. You made some cheap play for someone and they rejected you.
Nicole: Shut the hell up, Victor.
Victor: It was E.J., wasn't it?
Dean Robbins: Look, I'm completely lost. I...
Max: It's a simple question. Who's the girl in the photo?
Dean Robbins: Whoever broke in here must have dropped it or something. I've never seen that picture in my life.
Max: That's a damn lie.
Stephanie: Max, if he says he was --
Max: No, he's been lying all his life. Why would now be any different? Come on, Trent. Let's get everything out in the open. Who's the girl?
E.J.: Women, Tony -- I tell you, I'm through with the bloody lot of them.
E.J.: Pete, can I get another please? [Clears throat]
Tony: We've all been through it. You know, you got to tough it out. You got to stick with it. And if you're so in love with Sami, why don't you fight for her?
E.J.: [Laughs] "Fight"? Fight for what? That woman's got absolutely no idea what she wants. Now, Lucas has just been released from prison, so he's playing the victim to the hilt, and I've got to contend with that.
Tony: I'm gonna give you an unsolicited opinion whether you want to hear it or not. Because I know what I'm talking about.
E.J.: Go for it.
Tony: Well, marrying Sami and fathering a child with her, simply put, is what Stefano wanted. Now, if you let that go, giving up on Father, desecrating his memory -- that's what you would be doing. But I'm not sure you're ready to do that, are you?
Paul: Hey, honey.
Morgan: Do you really have to go?
Paul: Yeah. There's no turning back now. I wish there was
Morgan: Well, it's not for good, right? I mean, it's not forever?
Paul: I'll contact you as soon as I can.
Morgan: Okay. Take care of yourself.
Paul: Mm-hmm. And you too. Morgan, I need you to promise me something, okay? I need you to do something for me. I want you to stay away from Philip Kiriakis.
Morgan: But, Daddy --
Paul: I know that I already told you this, but this time is different. Promise me, okay?
Morgan: But I --
Paul: Just do what I say. I love you.
Morgan: I love you, too.
Paul: Shh. It's okay.
Philip: I meant what I said about wanting to be with you.
Chloe: Have you told that to Morgan?
Philip: You're the only one I want.
Chloe: You're just telling me what you think I want to hear.
Philip: It's true. I swear. [Cellphone ringing]
Philip: I'll just be a second. I promise. Yeah. You just make sure he keeps his mouth shut. The police already suspect our connection. Do not let him talk.
John: I know I have no real frame of reference, but... somehow this feels familiar.
Marlena: Mm. In a good way?
John: I'm comfortable with you. Not to mention you look... especially beautiful tonight.
Marlena: [Chuckles] Thank you.
John: Second chances.
Marlena: Second chances.
Max: Is the girl in the photo my sister?
Dean Robbins: How should I know? Why would you even think of that?
Max: Because it's not a huge leap. It's a young girl. You had her picture. Now, tell me who she is.
Dean Robbins: I don't have to tell you a damn thing. Why should I?
Max: Because you're my Father. You told me you wanted to buy my silence. The only reason why you'd do that is because you're afraid of the truth.
Dean Robbins: Oh, a scientist and a psychologist. Now I'm really impressed.
Max: Go to hell.
Dean Robbins: I know you think you're a smart kid, but, uh...you have no idea who you're dealing with.
Max: Actually, I do.
Stephanie: Are you threatening him?
Max: Don't worry about it, Stephanie.
Dean Robbins: I'm just saying that it's gonna be hard for Max to move forward if he's still dwelling on the past.
Max: Is that what you tell yourself?
Dean Robbins: Look, we got off on the wrong foot.
Max: The day I was born.
Dean Robbins: Don't you think we ought to try to resolve this? Would you excuse us?
Dean Robbins: She's really quite protective of you, isn't she?
Max: Leave her out of this. Maybe you should go, Stephanie.
Stephanie: Not with how angry and upset you are.
Dean Robbins: She's right. I think emotions are running a little high here. Why don't you try to calm down a little and we can talk about this again tomorrow? Just the two of us.
Max: Brady Pub, tomorrow.
Dean Robbins: I'll be there.
Max: It'll be fine.
Dean Robbins: All right, until then.
Max: [Scoffs] Let's get out of here.
Philip: All right, well, keep in touch. So, where were we? You know, why don't we go back to your place so we can talk more about this?
Chloe: I'm not so sure that's a good idea.
Philip: We can work through this, Chloe. We need to figure out where we stand with each other.
Chloe: Well, I'd like that, Philip, but I'm not so sure that's all you want to do.
Philip: I just want to talk.
Philip: That's not asking too much, is it?
Chloe: I guess not.
Philip: Then how about it?
John: I don't care how. Just find him and handle it.
Marlena: You're getting a lot of phone calls tonight.
John: Sorry. Couldn't be helped.
Marlena: Bad news?
Tony: So, when you think about what I said, that part of your continuing infatuation with Sami out of a sense of lingering loyalty to Father -- God knows why you feel that way, but it could be true.
E.J.: I suppose a part of me sees the logic in that.
Tony: Only part?
E.J.: I don't think there is a lot of logic when it comes to love, especially when it comes to loving Samantha.
Tony: Oh, I'm not asking you to see the logic in your love for Samantha. Well, you're right. Love is too complex to see the logic to it. What I'm asking is for you to understand the need to fight for her. Are we clear now?
Tony: To miracles.
E.J.: Yeah. Thank you.
Victor: What is it with you and your attraction to married men? Is it your self-destructive tendencies? The need to debase yourself?
Nicole: As if I would talk about this with you.
Victor: Oh, well, it seems like I've hit a nerve.
Nicole: Leave me alone, Victor.
Victor: Why don't you leave? And don't even think of taking anything with you that's not detailed in the settlement.
Nicole: You think I want any of this junk? All I want is money. Cold, hard cash.
Victor: Fine. Whatever it takes to finally get you out of my life.
Nicole: But that's not true. That's not what I want. Not at all.
Pete: Thank you.
Tony: Morgan. How nice to see you.
Morgan: Hi, Mr. DiMera.
Tony: So, how are you? How's your summer going?
Morgan: Not so good.
Tony: Oh, I'm sorry to hear that.
Morgan: It's okay. I'm just -- I'm trying to figure out what to do with my life.
Tony: Well, you can always come back and intern with me. I mean, that would be wonderful. Just let me know.
Morgan: I appreciate that. Thank you.
Tony: Well, you think about it. When you're ready, call me.
Morgan: I will. Thank you.
Tony: Nice to see you again.
Morgan: You too.
Chelsea: Why is everybody so hung up on the age thing?
Morgan: Dr. Jonas is old enough to be your --
Dean Robbins: I let you go once. I'm not gonna make that mistake again.
Nicole: Please don't do this.
John: It's time for you to cut your losses, Philip. Step down. Accept defeat.
