Paul: Where the hell you been, huh? What took you so long?
Philip: What do you want, Paul?
Paul: Oh, I don't know, Philip. Where should I start? Uh, let's see -- uh, John had me picked up today, had a couple goons stick a gun in my face. Maybe we start there, huh? What do you think?
Philip: Yeah...I heard.
Paul: W-what do you mean, you heard? A-are you having me followed?
Philip: I'm keeping an eye on you, yeah.
Paul: Then why didn't you help me out, huh? Those -- those guys could have killed me today, Philip. What, were you just gonna -- you just gonna stand there and let that happen?!
Philip: Keep your voice down.
Paul: No, I'm not gonna keep my voice down! Philip, I need your help... or I'm a dead man.
Philip: You just had to go and set that fire.
Paul: Okay, look, I-I-I made a mistake. I made a mistake. It was bad judgment, okay?
Philip: That's a bit of an understatement, don't you think?
Paul: What do you want me to say, Philip, huh? Look, man, I'm in a mess here. We're -- we're in a mess.
Philip: It's not my mess. I set John up, and it worked. He was arrested. If we would have just let things unfold naturally, John would have gone to jail and that would have been the end of it, but you had to get creative. I mean, tell me something -- how in the hell could you think that burning John's cargo was a good idea, huh? Huh?!
Paul: Because I am sick of that guy telling me what to do every single day -- Mr. High-and-mighty! Let's see how he likes it when he has got nothing, when people look at him like he is dirt. I brought him down.
Philip: Are you really that stupid? Your little stunt could have cost me everything.
Paul: They're gonna kill me, Philip.
Philip: You made a mistake, Paul. And now you're gonna have to suffer the consequences... on your own.
Marlena: I got your call. I came as soon as I could. What's going on?
Hope: Here, sit down. It's John. First the drug bust, then the accusations, and now his shipment was set on fire.
Marlena: I know. I should tell you that I've left the mansion.
Hope: Things are that bad?
Marlena: Things are that bad.
Hope: Marlena, I'm so sorry.
Marlena: Thanks. What did you want to say?
Hope: John came to see Bo and me earlier, and he was pretty upset, although I took that as a good sign -- that he lost his cool. For the first time in a long time, I think he really might be feeling something.
Marlena: Anger. The emotion that he's feeling is anger.
Hope: No, no, no. It wasn't just anger. It made me think that he -- that he was more accessible emotionally than he has been in the past. What I'm trying to say here is that maybe now is the time to try to get through to him.
Marlena: John doesn't want me in his life.
Hope: You can't really believe that.
Marlena: If I didn't, I wouldn't have left.
Hope: Marlena, I understand that he pushed you away and you're hurt. But John's lost. He needs you now more than ever. You have to help him before it's too late, and, honestly, truly, I think you're the only one who can.
John: Scotch, neat.
Ava: Thank you. Are you okay?
John: Just reviewing this mess with Hollingsworth.
Ava: Life gets messy sometimes.
John: I don't like getting my hands dirty.
Ava: I don't, either.
John: Then why did you help me?
Ava: I didn't have a choice. You're my friend, and you needed protecting.
John: I'll drink to that.
E.J.: Lucas! Where's that little bastard? Lucas!
[Knock on door]
Stephanie: May I come in?
Max: Hey. You're not still mad at me, are you?
Stephanie: Not mad, just confused. I mean, you didn't really explain why you disappeared earlier. And you didn't think to call me and tell me where you were.
Max: What's the big deal? I went for a jog like I told you. I didn't want to wake you.
Stephanie: That was considerate.
Max: You still don't believe me, do you?
Stephanie: Why are you being defensive?
Max: Should I be cool with it that you're pretty much calling me a liar?
Stephanie: What is wrong with you?
Max: I feel like I'm being cross-examined. There's too many questions.
Stephanie: Well, you know what? You're gonna have to put up with it, because I have one more about Dean Robbins. Bo asked us if we knew of anyone who was an enemy of the dean. Nick said he didn't know, and I didn't say anything.
Max: So? What's your point?
Stephanie: My point is if I had been honest, I would have told your brother that I had my suspicions and I have for a while. Max, I need to know -- are you and the dean enemies?
Max: Look, Steph, the last thing I want is to get you involved in the mess my life is.
Stephanie: I am involved. Isn't that what love is -- dealing with the good and the bad?
Max: No, not right now.
Stephanie: Max, stop pushing me away. Just tell me what's wrong. It doesn't matter how bad or crazy it is. I can handle it. Just tell me and I'll try and help you...unless you don't love me enough to trust me with the truth.
John: Excuse us, nephew. Is it possible to give me and my lady friend a little privacy?
E.J.: Sorry. I didn't know you were here. Just give me a minute, all right? Lucas!
Ava: E.J., what's going on?
E.J.: Well, you know, I'm having a bit of a bad day. I got to be honest. So, as you'll hear, Samantha has asked me to leave. Apparently Lucas is in and I am out, so that's great news. Guess he gave her an ultimatum. Fortunately for Lucas, life doesn't quite work that way, but never mind. Anyway, what do I know? I'm only her husband. I don't have any rights, I suppose.
John: Well, you're the lawyer.
E.J.: Quite. Yeah, quite. See, in my opinion -- if I want to stay here, I get to stay here. If I want to raise my son here, I get to raise my son here. I certainly don't need her permission. [Sighs] I think I have much more of a right to be here than they do. I mean, you are my uncle.
John: No question.
E.J.: You know, although why I'd want to live here in the first place, I have absolutely no idea. That woman does nothing but completely infuriate me. And I tell you, if she wasn't the mother of my child, I would wring her bloody neck.
Lucas: Yeah, I know exactly how you feel.
Marlena: I have tried everything in my power, everything I know how to do to bring my husband back. Every time I think I'm making progress, even the slightest bit, he eludes me. You have no idea how frustrating and painful that is.
Hope: Bo and I want things to work out for the two of you. I mean, just the very idea of... John no longer being in your life and losing him forever --
Marlena: It may have happened already. That's what he keeps telling me. And I try not to believe it, but right now, I'm just not so sure.
Hope: Do you think that John is responsible for the shipment of cocaine?
Marlena: Are you asking me as a friend... or as a detective?
Max: This isn't about trust.
Stephanie: How can you say that? This whole thing is about trust. And if you keep pushing me away --
Max: I'm not doing that. I'm trying to protect you here.
Stephanie: I'm a big girl, okay? Whatever it is that's bothering you, I'm sure I can handle it. Come on, give me some credit.
Max: What do you want from me, huh? Do you want me to have some sort of meltdown so you can comfort me and tell me it's gonna be fine? Do you want to know every little detail about my screwed-up life so that you can save me from it? Well, forget it. You can't. No one can. Look... I'm sorry. I shouldn't have gone off on you like that.
Stephanie: It's okay.
Max: You mean the world to me, and you didn't do anything wrong.
Stephanie: I said it's okay, okay? Because I love you. And whatever it is that's bothering you, obviously, it's very painful, and if you want me to leave you alone about it, I guess I have to, but I can't pretend that I don't care. I just want to be a part of your life.
Max: You are a huge part of my life. You're the most important part.
Stephanie: Then tell me what's wrong.
Max: You were right about me and Dean Robbins being enemies.
Stephanie: So the break-in?
Max: It was me. I broke into his room.
E.J.: You think you know how I feel. Do you?
Lucas: Yeah, well... Ava, how are you?
E.J.: You don't have a clue how I feel, Lucas, and while we're talking about it, if anybody's moving out of this house, it's you. You seem to be forgetting John is my uncle, and he's not about to kick me out of the house just to make you feel a little bit more comfortable. Am I right, John?
John: You bet you are. I call the shots in this mansion here, and we've been down this road before. E.J. stays...if he wants to.
Dr. Rolf: Mr. Black, I realize you want your privacy, but Mrs. Kiriakis --
Nicole: Thank you, Ralph. I got it from here. Ava, I'm so sorry, but I've been trying to call you.
Ava: Okay, well, what's going on?
Nicole: Can I talk to you -- not here, though?
Ava: Yeah, of course. I hope you don't mind.
John: No, we'll hook up later and pick up where we left off.
Ava: I'd like that. Okay, let's go. I'll call you, all right? I'll let you know where I'm gonna be.
John: Now, it seems that you two also have some urgent business to discuss, so I'll leave you to it. But don't get physical. Remember, if you break it, you bought it. And keep your voices down. We don't want to wake the babies, do we?
Lucas: No, we don't. What's the matter, Elvis -- a little upset?
E.J.: [Chuckles] I'm a little upset. Remind me... exactly why it was that I got you released from prison in the first place.
Lucas: Well, you know what, pal? I was wondering the same thing myself.
Paul: So, that's it, huh? Never mind what I did for you.
Philip: No. No, it's about what you undid for me.
Paul: Okay, okay, you know what, man? Let me fix it. Let me fix it. I'm good at fixing things.
Philip: How? How? You got a time machine, Paul?
Paul: Just don't cut me loose here, Philip! Come on, man. I got a family. Okay, you know what? I'm begging you. I'm begging you. Is that what you want? Look, look. I am begging you.
Philip: That little fire you set burned all my goodwill. You want my advice? Leave town before you become even more of a liability to me and make me even angrier.
Stephanie: So, it was you. You broke -- I don't understand.
Max: This is why I didn't want to tell you.
Stephanie: I don't get it. That's not like you. You're not a criminal. What else aren't you telling me?
Max: I can't talk about it.
Stephanie: Can't or won't?
Max: Both. Why does it matter?
Stephanie: Max, look at me. I do have some idea of how you're feeling. You know how long it took for me to talk about the rape. I was very ashamed and afraid that people were gonna look at me differently. But you taught me to trust and love again. And that's what I want to do for you.
Max: I'm sorry. I know you want to help me, and that means a lot to me, but it's not gonna happen.
Stephanie: Max, please.
Max: Steph, I should go.
Stephanie: Where are you going? To deal with Dean Robbins?
Stephanie: Then I'm coming with you.
Max: No, you're not.
E.J.: I am not your pal.
Lucas: Just trying to be friendly.
E.J.: No, you're not. You're being snide and manipulative.
Lucas: No, I'm trying to have a civil conversation, but you seem a little upset. You seem mad. You seem incapable of that because of your aggression. I guess it's got to go somewhere, right?
E.J.: You really think you know me, don't you?
Lucas: I know lawyers.
E.J.: Right. Well, then, I bet you know we like a good fight.
Lucas: A fight? Is that what this is? Am I missing something?
E.J.: What? Am I missing something? I mean, you're no longer in love with Samantha, is that right? You don't dream about taking her and your daughter and going, living happily ever after?
Lucas: I'm stuck here. I'm trapped. I can't give her that kind of life even if I wanted to. Let's just say she's done some things that I can't get over. Any idea what that might be?
E.J.: What, you mean sleeping with me? I wasn't aware that that was a deal breaker.
Lucas: Oh, it is. That and some other things.
E.J.: What other things?
Lucas: Well, I was talking to Samantha, and, basically, she admitted that...she, uh -- nah, I shouldn't say anything.
E.J.: Go on.
Lucas: All right, I will. She basically admitted that she's confused about her feelings for you.
Hope: I'm asking as a friend... and as a cop.
Marlena: The truth is...I don't know. John doesn't divulge that kind of thing to me. If he were trafficking drugs, he knows that I could not keep his confidence.
Hope: Well, I wasn't asking you what you know. I was asking you what you think. There's a war going on between John and the Kiriakis family. And if we don't put an end to it, I don't know what's gonna happen.
Ava: Oh, look. A cop and a shrink. My favorite pair.
Nicole: Should we go somewhere else?
Ava: Nah. Look, I'm not looking for trouble, and I don't think they are, either. In fact, I'm gonna go over and make nice.
Marlena: I don't know if John is capable of setting a fire or trafficking drugs. But I do know he is capable of making some very bad decisions.
[Knock on door]
Dean Robbins: What are you doing here?
Max: We need to talk.
Dean Robbins: Really? About what -- how all the theories in my book are false or -- no, I don't think so. You know, I'm not gonna get into a debate with some wannabe science geek.
Max: I thought scientists live for theoretical arguments.
Dean Robbins: Well, you know, if I took the time to deal with every upstart who thinks he's capable of debunking my theories --
Max: You wouldn't have any free time at all, would you?
Dean Robbins: [Sighs] Please leave. Come on, don't make me call security.
Max: I don't think that's a smart idea.
Dean Robbins: You know, you are a bold one. I'll give you that. You're audacious as hell.
Max: Maybe it's in my DNA.
Dean Robbins: You know what? You want to trash my book, that's fine. That's your prerogative. But could you please do it somewhere else, you know? Go start a blog or something.
Max: Oh, believe me, I will. And I'm gonna get your star pupil, Nick, to blog right alongside me, because you're going down, dean.
Dean Robbins: [Chuckles] Now you're threatening me?
Max: No, you'll know when I'm threatening you. Wow. Love what you've done with the place. It looks like you fell into a little bit of trouble.
Dean Robbins: I'm gonna give you one more chance to leave of your own accord. After that, it will be a matter for the authorities.
Max: Well, I heard that almost everything that you touch damn near turns to gold. What's that? Who's the girl, huh? Who's the girl?
Dean Robbins: Give me that.
Max: Whoa, relax. I was just curious.
Dean Robbins: Get the hell out -- now!
[Pounding on door]
Stephanie: Max, I know you're in there! Let me in! Max, open the door!
Ava: Hello, ladies. I hope I'm not interrupting anything.
Hope: Actually, you are.
Marlena: What can we do for you, Ava?
Ava: Well, I was wondering if the two of you would like to join Nicole and me for a drink. I know I am not your favorite person, Hope.
Hope: Now, that is the understatement of the year.
Ava: But I am trying to turn my life around. Dr. Evans knows that.
Marlena: I do know that. I wasn't aware that John was helping you.
Ava: Oh, he's a good friend.
Hope: No. Friend? Are they -- no.
Marlena: Dating. One of the decisions that we talked about earlier.
Ava: Listen, from everything John has told me, he says that technically you're still married but there's no real connection between the two of you anymore.
Marlena: You know nothing about me. You know nothing about John. And you know nothing about what we have together.
Ava: I don't know anything about what you shared. I only know what he's told me and how he feels about you now.
Hope: It is time for you to go, I believe.
Marlena: No. Let her stay and drone on for a while.
Ava: No, no, I'm finished, actually. I see that coming over here and trying to make nice with you ladies obviously was a big mistake.
Hope: You weren't trying to make nice. No, you weren't. You were deliberately trying to bait her.
Ava: Okay. I don't think any of us needs this right now, do we?
Hope: One thing you are right about.
Ava: I'm gonna go back to my friend.
Hope: You do that.
Nicole: Oh, what happened over there?
Ava: How about we not discuss it?
Nicole: I got it. I hear ya.
Ava: What's going on with you, huh? You got some kind of problem? Why were you so anxious to see me?
Nicole: My past...once again, has come back to haunt me.
E.J.: Why are you telling me this, Lucas?
Lucas: I'm just getting it off my chest -- you know, clearing the air. Take your pick.
E.J.: Really? I don't believe you.
Lucas: Well, it doesn't matter. It's not about me. It's about you and your wife, or your soon-to-be ex-wife, right? I'm just simply telling you what I know.
E.J.: Right, right. I'm sure your intentions are entirely honorable.
Lucas: As always.
E.J.: Mm. Let me ask you this -- if she has all these feelings for me, then why is she doing this?
Lucas: That's a great question. You're gonna have to figure that one out yourself, pal. Women are mysterious creatures.
E.J.: Please, spare me the platitudes. I've had enough of those to last me a lifetime in the last few days.
Lucas: Just trying to be original for you, counselor. You know, she was here earlier. Yeah, I saw her packing up a few of your things. Most of your belongings are upstairs in suitcases.
E.J.: Let me tell you something, Lucas. I'm not going anywhere. You'd do well to remember that.
Nicole: I am so sorry to lay my crazy drama on you.
Ava: No. No, no, no, no. I want to hear it. Hey. You can trust me.
Nicole: All right. [Sighs] I was...young and...stupid and lost, and I made a huge mistake with someone.
Nicole: And now he's back in Salem, and -- and I don't know what to do.
Ava: All right, what happened?
Nicole: I'm afraid to say.
Ava: Why? Did he hurt you? Hey. I have been victimized by men practically my entire life. I have been used, controlled, manipulated. I know all about it.
Nicole: [Voice breaking] It's just -- it's just sometimes I feel like I'm the only one.
Ava: You are not.
Nicole: It's hard for me to believe that you went through what you went through.
Ava: Doesn't sound like your life has been a bed of roses, either. Huh? Look at you. You used to be so strong and in control. This guy's got a hold on you, huh?
Nicole: Yeah. And he's freaking me out.
Hope: I'm so sorry you had to deal with that.
Marlena: I wish I hadn't let her get to me.
Hope: I understand. You're hurt. You're frustrated. Why wouldn't you be?
Marlena: I also wish there was some way to get to John, to reach him. I know he's in there.
Hope: Keep talking to him. Don't give up. I know you've tried so hard already, but reach out to him one last time. Ask him to back off from the Kiriakis family and let the cops handle the investigation.
Marlena: All right, I'll do it. I'll try again.
Hope: Good. Because here's your chance. Call me if you need anything, okay?
Paul: Hey, honey.
Morgan: God, you scared me.
Paul: Sorry about that. You okay?
Morgan: Yeah, it's just this place creeps me out.
Paul: Well, I didn't know where else to meet.
Morgan: How about anywhere else? You're always telling me to stay away from here.
Paul: And you should. I just didn't want to, uh -- I didn't want to meet anywhere more public.
Morgan: Daddy, what happened?
Paul: Uh... look, Morgan, I-I don't have a lot of time. But I wasn't gonna leave without saying goodbye.
Morgan: Goodbye? Daddy, what are you talking about?
Paul: I'm leaving town.
Morgan: You're leaving? Why?
Paul: Because it's not safe for me here anymore. And if I stay here...
Morgan: Daddy, if you stay here what?
Paul: I just got to leave, honey.
Paul: Oh, my God.
Max: What are you doing?
Dean Robbins: I'm calling security.
Max: You know what? I don't think that's a good idea.
Dean Robbins: Unless you and your friend will leave on your own, that's what I'm gonna do.
Max: Not until you tell me who's in the picture.
Stephanie: Max Brady, open the door!
Dean Robbins: Open the door.
Dean Robbins: Let her in.
Max: She has nothing to do with us.
Dean Robbins: Either you open it or I will.
Stephanie: Open up! Why didn't you let me in?
Dean Robbins: I'm sorry. Did you say his last name was Brady?
Max: Quit stalling, damn it, and answer the question.
Dean Robbins: All right, I want you both out of here now.
Stephanie: He just let me in.
Dean Robbins: Yeah, well, I thought maybe you could get him to leave.
Stephanie: All right, come on, let's go.
Max: No, not until you tell me who she is -- the girl in the photo.
Dean Robbins: All right, if you two will leave now, then we won't have to get the authorities involved, all right?
Stephanie: Come on, let's go.
Max: No, he's not gonna call the cops on me.
Dean Robbins: Watch me.
Max: You're bluffing.
Stephanie: What are you doing? Do you really want the police to come down here?
Max: He's not gonna call them.
Stephanie: How do you know?
Max: Because of what he knows. Isn't that right, Trent?
Philip: Hey, what are you doing down here? You okay?
Morgan: It's my Father. He called me down here to meet him. He said he's leaving town. He's afraid his life's in danger.
Nicole: I am -- I'm so sorry to cut this short, Ava, but I think I just need to go home.
Ava: Are you sure?
Ava: Hey, whatever you need...
Nicole: I appreciate it.
Ava: No, I'm serious. This guy so much as looks at you the wrong way, you call me.
Nicole: I will. Thank you.
Ava: I have resources. They're yours if you need them. We're friends, right?
Nicole: Yeah. We're friends. And, you know, it's funny. I tried to see Victor earlier to ask for his protection. I don't know why I didn't think of you.
Ava: Yeah, well, hopefully you will now.
Nicole: You can count on it. I'll call you later, okay?
Marlena: John...we need to talk.
John: Sorry, Blondie. My dance card's full.
Marlena: Oh, come now. You can always find time for me. What about supper...tonight?
Stephanie: What do you mean, "what he knows"?
Max: [Sighs] Well... you want to tell her, or should I?
Dean Robbins: I'm just -- I'm as confused as she is.
Max: For a brilliant guy, you don't play dumb very well.
Dean Robbins: Please leave.
Stephanie: Come on, let's go.
Max: No, I'm not going anywhere until the truth comes out. And you were right earlier, Steph. But it's the past. You know, it sometimes is very painful to deal with, very painful to talk about, except when it's standing here, staring you right in the face. Isn't that right, Trent? Let's just get it all out on the table.
Dean Robbins: How did you know?
Philip: You shouldn't cry. Not for him.
Morgan: He's my Father.
Philip: I'm sorry. I guess I just know what kind of man your father really is.
Morgan: You listen to me, Philip. I may not always approve of everything that he does in his private life, but he loves me and I love him. He has never turned his back on me. And although he makes some pretty stupid choices, he will always be there for me.
Philip: I'm sure that's true.
Morgan: [Voice breaking] I don't know what I'm gonna do if anything happens to him. But you're gonna protect us, right? You're gonna make sure nothing happens to my Father?
Philip: I can't make any promises.
Morgan: But you're gonna try, right? 'Cause -- 'cause you have a really good heart. And you care about me, don't you?
Philip: Of course I do.
Morgan: You are the only person that I trust right now, okay? I need you.
Marlena: Come on and have supper with me. Please. We need this.
John: You know, if that invitation came in last week, I would have jumped on it, but now...not so much.
Marlena: Why? What happened?
John: I got tired of groveling, begging. Mostly I just got tired of being compared to a guy who's not even around anymore.
Marlena: What if I stop doing that?
John: How many times have you said that? I don't think you're capable, Blondie. Not with the way you...worship that other guy.
Marlena: I didn't worship him. I loved him...with all my heart. And you're right. That isn't fair. I shouldn't compare you to somebody that you were once. I understand you're upset. I understand your frustration.
John: I'm not frustrated anymore. I moved on. Do the same. Glad you called. Are you ready?
Ava: I most certainly am.
Nicole: Hi, are you still delivering? Yeah, this is Nicole Kiriakis. Great. I will have two bottles of your best chilled champagne, oh, and one bottle of your top-shelf vodka -- you know, the one you keep in the freezer? Mm-hmm. Yeah, just use the credit card on file. Perfect. I'll be here. Ciao. Oh. E.J., what brings you to the Chateau Kiriakis? Oh, wait, let me guess. You're here to admire Victor's exquisite sense of fung shui.
E.J.: No. Actually, I came to see you.
Nicole: Why? I thought our business has been transacted.
E.J.: Yeah. It's not about business.
Nicole: Oh. Well, what other reason could there be? I mean, the suspense is absolutely killing me.
E.J.: Just, um -- I guess I kind of wanted somebody to talk to. Samantha asked me to leave the house, so...
Nicole: Really? She kicked you out?
Nicole: Oh. I'm sorry to hear that.
E.J.: Are you?
E.J.: Yeah, really? I mean, you have this big grin. Kind of starts around this ear and ends right about there.
Nicole: Okay, I have to admit -- I'm not sorry to hear that. I mean, that whole situation is a tall glass of wrong. You should be relieved.
E.J.: Well, I'm not. But I'm not moving out, either. You know, John's my uncle, and he wants me to stay, so...
Nicole: Okay, uh, I'm confused, then. What -- so, Sami can't kick you out?
E.J.: Something like that, yeah.
Nicole: Then why are you so upset? Oh. Sami hurt you. That's why you're so down in the dumps. And you need someone to take your mind off that mean little twit.
E.J. : God, I could really do with the distraction, yes.
Nicole: Yeah, you know, I could use someone to take my mind off things.
E.J. : Really? Is everything okay?
Nicole: Yeah. Nothing I want to bore you with.
E.J. : Okay.
Nicole: You know, um. . . Victor's at the hospital with Kate. He'll probably be gone most of the night.
E.J. : Well, I wonder what we can do in his absence.
Max: What, are you surprised?
Dean Robbins: Hmm?
Max: I may not be a model student, but I definitely do my homework. You see, everyone leaves a paper trail, especially an esteemed writer such as yourself. I've known about you for a while now.
Stephanie: Known what?
Max: Tell her.
Dean Robbins: No.
Max: What, you can't face it?
Stephanie: You tell me, Max.
Max: No, I want him to say it.
Stephanie: Say what?
Marlena: Can you say what you want to say so I can leave, please?
John: My behavior at the pub was wrong.
Max: You are gonna start talking.
Dean Robbins: I don't have to justify myself to you.
Max: The hell you don't.
