Stephanie: What are the odds you'll get the grant?

Nick: I think I stand a pretty good chance, you know? I don't know if I'm playing all the politics right, but if they give me the money, I know that I can make it work, and it's all about the science of going green and making it practical for everyday life. You know, I've done all the research. I have all the forms filled out and everything. I have prototype systems already up and running, so, you know, I can't think of a single reason that I won't get the grant, but that's all I need, so...

Stephanie: And then we can go back to Vegas, put it all on the craps table, and double it.

Nick: There you go, right?

Stephanie: But your research isn't a gamble, right?

Nick: Oh, no, no, no. This -- this works. I'm ultra confident.

Stephanie: That is so cool. And then I can say I knew you when. [Chuckles] Chelsea. You don't look so good.

Chelsea: Thanks.

Stephanie: Is it your dad?

Nick: How is he?

Chelsea: If he was doing well, would I look like this?

Nick: Sorry. I didn't mean to --

Chelsea: No, I'm sorry. I'm just really stressed out and sleep-deprived, that's all.

Nick: It's okay. I understand.

Stephanie: Do you want to talk about it?

Chelsea: No.

Stephanie: Okay, well...he is my Uncle Bo, so if there's anything you know, I'd like to know, too, okay?

Chelsea: He's sick. Um, he's really sick, and it's his pancreas.

Stephanie: Is it cancerous?

Chelsea: They don't think so, but they're really not sure what's wrong with it, only that it's shutting down and getting weaker and they don't know why, and they don't know how to stop it.

Stephanie: What does that mean? What's the worst-case scenario?

Chelsea: He could die, Stephanie. And he will die if they can't do something about it quick. I was so afraid that I was gonna lose him in the plane crash. And now...

Chloe: [Sighs]

Philip: Good morning. You slept in... again.

Chloe: Yeah, it's so comfortable here. And quiet.

Philip: Want some coffee? Juice?

Chloe: Yeah, thanks. I'm surprised you haven't left for work yet.

Philip: Yeah, I'm waiting for a call.

Chloe: Um...Philip? I don't really know how to ask you this. You've already helped me so much. I mean, letting me stay here, even though your father didn't want me to.

Philip: What is it?

Chloe: I need another favor.

Philip: What? Do you need my lawyers again? You used the entire team last time.

Chloe: I know, and you were so great to help. You were really wonderful.

Philip: I wasn't the one who kept you from getting extradited to Austria. That was my attorneys.

Chloe: But you were the one who believed in me.

Philip: Despite the tension it caused with my father.

Chloe: I know. He really believes I had something to do with Brady's disappearance, doesn't he?

Philip: No. No, he doesn't believe you had something to do with it. He believes you had everything to do with it.

Chloe: I didn't, and you said that you believed that.

Philip: We've been over this, and I do believe you. So...what's this favor? I can't imagine it's any bigger than what I've already done for you.

Chloe: It is bigger.

Steve: Hey. Here we go. Get all bundled up here.

Kayla: Well, thank you, but I'm not cold.

Steve: Okay. Well, it's there in case you do get cold.

Kayla: Thank you. You know, why don't you just come over here and sit down next to me?

Steve: Uh...no, I don't want to sit down. You want some chips and dip maybe? Something like that?

Kayla: No, I'm fine.

Steve: I got some good dip. I got onion, ranch, guacamole.

Kayla: No, no chips, no dip.

Steve: How about another drink?

Kayla: I have barely touched the one you already made for me.

Steve: I'll get you some more ice.

Kayla: I'm good, really. Listen...stop. Come sit down here. Listen, it's not that I don't like it, but I don't need you waiting on me like this. You know, there are women out in the field picking tomatoes right up until labor.

Steve: Yeah, but they didn't get a warning from their doctors to take it easy.

Kayla: Oh, I'm taking it easy. Come on. Come over here and relax.

Steve: Okay, all right.

Kayla: I'll warm it up for you. Here. There. That's better. [Knock on door]

Steve: I'll get it.

Kayla: Why are you so jumpy?

Steve: I'm not jumpy.

Steve: Just a second.

Kayla: Who is it?

Steve: It's pizza.

Abe: You okay?

Steve: Yeah. So, what'd you find out?

Abe: I couldn't find anything on that woman whose name you gave me.

Steve: What do you mean you couldn't find anything? There's got to be something.

Abe: Would you just let me finish? I couldn't find anything in the local files, so we had to run it through the state and federal data banks.

Steve: So what'd you find out?

Chelsea: No, I'm gonna be fine, really. It's gonna be fine.

Stephanie: You're not doing much to convince me.

Chelsea: Well, I'm just trying to be strong. Shawn said that we need to be in order for my dad to make it through this, so...

Stephanie: You are strong.

Chelsea: Good. At least somebody's buying the act.

Nick: There has to be something that they can do, either an operation or chemo or a transplant.

Chelsea: The doctors haven't really diagnosed him with anything yet. They know that he has pancreatic cancer in the family, but, um, I guess knowing that doesn't really help.

Nick: What's causing it to fail?

Chelsea: I already told you, Nick. I don't know.

Nick: Well, you don't always have to know why it's failing in order to do something to try and help him.

Chelsea: I'm sorry.

Nick: It's okay.

Stephanie: Hey, I tried calling you.

Max: Yeah, I was at court.

Stephanie: Your hearing. I completely forgot.

Max: I wish I had, too.

Stephanie: I am so sorry I wasn't there with you.

Max: Yeah.

Stephanie: Really. I guess with everything going on, I just forgot.

Max: I know about everything going on. It was just kind of a bad time for me to go down to the judge and ask for leniency.

Chelsea: Why? What happened?

Max: I was kind of a jerk to the judge.

Stephanie: You're not in jail.

Max: No, I-I almost was. I, uh -- the judge kept telling me how horrible of a crime it was to hide bodies, and I told him, "well, you know, I only did it once, and it was the son of a bitch who raped my girlfriend."

Nick: Were those the words you used?

Max: I toned it down for you guys.

Nick: Oh. How'd the judge take that?

Max: Not well. My lawyer told me to sit down and shut up, and then he told the judge about my pop.

Chelsea: So then he let you go?

Max: Uh, not quite. He didn't know if I was telling the truth of if I was a lying, body-snatching freak, so he gave me community service.

Stephanie: That's not bad.

Max: Right now, I really don't care if I'm behind bars or if I'm picking up trash on the highway. I just miss my pop. That's all that matters -- you know, my pop. Uh, well, at least this Ford Decker deal is dead and buried.

Nick: Was that supposed to be funny?

Max: No.

Stephanie: So, do you want to talk about your pop?

Max: No. Look, thanks. Just not now. Can we change the subject? Like, talk about something else?

Stephanie: Well, um...Chelsea and I were going to apply for internships, but with everything that's going -- my mom... everyone -- it's just kind of hard to get excited about anything.

Chelsea: We're gonna have to sooner or later. I don't even want to go to class. I can't concentrate on anything.

Nick: You need to take some time off, like at least a week.

Chelsea: Yeah, 'cause that will go over really well with my professors.

Morgan: Guess what. I just applied for the coolest internship. You girls have applied somewhere, too, right? I mean, I think it will help get your minds off everything.

Philip: Loaning you a full team of high-priced attorneys was a pretty nice favor. Now you're asking for a bigger one? What is it?

Chloe: I'm running out of money.

Philip: You're asking for a loan?

Chloe: No. It's just that I can't stay here forever and I can't afford a place of my own and staying in a hotel would cost even more money.

Philip: I wouldn't have a problem with you staying here a while longer, Chloe, but my father's patience is running pretty thin. He thinks you did something to or something with his grandson.

Chloe: I didn't. Do you believe that or not?

Philip: It would make life a lot easier it I didn't believe you. [Exhales slowly] Okay. You can stay here a while longer.

Chloe: Why do I feel like this is the biggest mistake I've ever made?

Philip: So, you're afraid to leave the confines of the Kiriakis compound.

Chloe: I never said I was afraid.

Philip: No, but I find it hard to believe you can't scrounge up enough cash to stay at the Salem Inn. And while I do think my dad wants to keep an eye on you, I can't imagine you want him hovering. So there must be more to your request than meets the eye. I suppose it's a waste of my time to ask.

Chloe: I thought you trusted me.

Philip: I do. That doesn't mean I think you're being completely open with me.

Chloe: I am, Philip. As much as I need to be, okay? Please, just be my friend.

Philip: Always.

Chloe: Thanks. [Shivers]

Philip: More...stuff? Where did all this come from?

Chloe: It was in storage. I had it sent over this morning.

Philip: You were pretty sure of yourself, weren't you?

Chloe: No, I had a backup plan.

Philip: What was that?

Chloe: Live on your front porch.

Philip: Damn, Chloe, how much more stuff do you have?

Chloe: How much closet space do you have?

Philip: Do you always travel this light?

Chloe: I just brought the basics.

Philip: The basics for what, a trip around the world?

Chloe: No, the basics for everyday living.

Philip: No wonder you drove Brady crazy.

Chloe: My baggage had nothing to do with me and Brady, okay?

Philip: "Baggage"?

Chloe: Luggage. Is that better?

Philip: Well, if it wasn't your baggage, what was the real problem with you and Brady?

Chloe: Like I told you already, love just wasn't enough.

Philip: Was that because you were too tired of putting up with Brady, or was he too tired of putting up with you?

Chloe: Whatever problems Brady and I had in our marriage aren't any of your business, okay? Stop pushing me about it, Philip. I mean it.

Stephanie: What if none of us gets an internship?

Chelsea: If I don't start studying for my classes, I'm not even gonna pass those.

Morgan: Y'all are so negative.

Stephanie: Maybe we're just realistic.

Max: Yeah, we've been dealt some really nasty cards lately, Morgan.

Chelsea: Morgan...did you know that my dad is in intensive care? That he could possibly die?

Morgan: Oh, my God, sweetie. I had no idea.

Max: But you knew my pop just passed away, right, and her parents are in the hospital, or were in the hospital?

Morgan: Yeah, and I'm sorry, Max, and, Steph, you, too, but like I said, I mean, I would do anything I could to help.

Max: Thank you, but there's not a whole lot anyone can do right now.

Nick: Okay, you know what? I think that we're all under a lot of pressure right now.

Morgan: So, did you get your grant?

Nick: Uh, no, not yet. I still have to give a presentation and show them some more research data.

Morgan: Well, then, do it, 'cause we all know you can. I mean, you're a genius.

Nick: Well, it's not quite that simple, Morgan. There's some other things going on.

Morgan: Like what?

Nick: Like there's a lot of stuff going on with Chelsea right now.

Morgan: Right, and, honey, I'm so sorry about that, but that should not affect you getting your grant.

Nick: Well, it affects everything. I mean, there are things going on in Chelsea's life that affect me, too.

Chelsea: Well, apparently, you shouldn't let them. You do what you got to do.

Morgan: She's right. Look, Chelsea, I am so sorry for everything that's going on. I know how strong you are, though.

Chelsea: Thank you.

Morgan: You don't want him to stop trying to get his grant, do you?

Chelsea: No. And I know you will. And I also know that I will get through whatever happens.

Morgan: See? That's what I'm talking about. You are so strong. You know what? Can I steal Nick away for a second?

Chelsea: Yeah, sure, Morgan. You do whatever you want.

Morgan: Okay, come here, Nick.

Nick: [Clears throat] [Sighs] Things are complicated, Morgan.

Morgan: They're complicated, and they're always gonna be complicated, okay? And I can appreciate how concerned you are about Chelsea.

Nick: She's my girlfriend. What am I supposed to do -- abandon her when she really needs someone to be there for her?

Morgan: Of course not, and I never said anything close to that. Look, I mean, think about if you blow this chance to get this grant. How is that gonna help you or her out?

Nick: It's not.

Morgan: Then you need to focus.

Nick: I know. You're right.

Morgan: Morgan's always right, sweetie.

Steve: So, what'd you find out about her?

Abe: Well, this Ava Vitali has a bit of a record.

Steve: Well, that's no surprise.

Abe: Stretches from here into the next county.

Steve: I'm gonna need a copy of that. Can you do that for me?

Abe: Yeah, I can get you a copy, but I'm gonna want to know why.

Steve: You're a friend of mine, right, Abe?

Abe: Yeah, I'd like to think so. I think I just proved that by running a check on this woman for you off the record.

Steve: I appreciate that. But I'm gonna ask you to keep this just between the two of us.

Abe: All right. You have my word.

Steve: Do you remember when Stefano held me captive?

Abe: Yeah. Of course.

Steve: He was doing to me what he did to John. I didn't know who or what I was. But at one point, I managed to escape. I was gone about a year.

Abe: Don't tell me that you hooked up with this woman. Romantically?

[Door opens]

Kayla: Abe. Making a few extra dollars as a pizza delivery man?

Steve: [Chuckles]

Ava: You, you, you, you.

Abe: Hey, Kayla.

Kayla: Hi, Abe. So, what are you two boys up to out here?

Steve: Well, uh, we're talking about the investigation into the sabotage of John's plane. That's all I can say.

Kayla: Oh.

Steve: So, I hate to have to ask you this, baby, but could you go back into the bedroom for just a little while so Abe and I can come inside and talk?

Kayla: Sure. Okay, nice seeing you, Abe.

Abe: You too, Kayla.

Steve: Thanks, baby.

[Door closes]

Abe: So, you had no clue you were Steve Johnson.

Steve: No. Everybody called me Patch. I just accepted it. That's all I knew.

Abe: And you fell in with this Ava Vitali.

Steve: I fell in.

Abe: Did you know anything about her family?

Steve: Oh, yeah. They were into just about everything -- drugs, guns, extortion.

Abe: They don't run around on my turf, but I know who they are. They like to keep a low profile. But you know how that is. They don't seem like the kind of people you want to get mixed up with.

Steve: Yeah, but I was... for a while.

Abe: How deep?

Steve: I barely scratched the surface.

Abe: And what happened to Ava?

Steve: She wanted to marry me.

Abe: So you marry her, you marry the whole family. Am I right?

Steve: We didn't really talk about it, but probably, yeah.

Abe: So what happened?

Steve: I wasn't exactly sure why at the time, but I knew I didn't want to marry her. I mean, we seemed to be a good fit, but there was something... something in my subconscious, maybe. I just knew that she wasn't the woman I loved. I felt like there was somebody else out there for me. I wasn't wrong.

Abe: So, why are you dredging all this up?

Steve: I didn't dredge it up. Ava did. She's here.

Nick: Look, I just -- I don't think this is the time.

Morgan: Well, if not now, when?

Stephanie: I, um, I think you just need some downtime, Max. Some time to get away.

Max: Can you excuse me a minute? [Clears throat]

Morgan: Hey. We were just talking about Nick's grant and how I think he should just really plow forward and not stop until he gets it. You know what I mean?

Max: Right. Right. Can you excuse us a minute?

Nick: Uh, yeah.

Max: Don't pull this.

Morgan: What are you talking about?

Max: You know damn well what I'm talking about.

Morgan: You don't want me to be supportive of Nick? He's your best friend. What kind of friend are you?

Max: What kind of friend are you of Chelsea? You're supposed to be sisters, aren't you?

Morgan: We're Thetas. Of course we're sisters.

Max: Right, but Chelsea's going through a very difficult time right now. Don't take Nick away from her when she needs him the most.

Morgan: I would never do that.

Max: You just did.

Chloe: [Speaking German]

Abe: So, how long ago did this happen?

Steve: Five or six years ago.

Abe: She's still clinging to the hope of marrying you?

Steve: "Clinging"? That's an understatement. She's obsessed. But not like now. The Ava I've been seeing around lately...is not the same one. There's this look in her eye. She's not the same girl.

Abe: What, do you think she has mental problems? Drugged, accident?

Steve: Oh, I think she's got mental problems. I don't know what happened to her. Maybe it had to do with her father. He always kept her on a short leash. I know he wouldn't let her out to go chasing down an old flame.

Abe: Well, according to our records, he's still out and about, doing business as usual, just under the radar.

Steve: Maybe -- maybe she did get out from under his thumb, come looking for me. I know she's resourceful. She's resourceful enough to get people together to sabotage John's plane.

Abe: Are you saying that she had something to do with that plane crash?

Steve: I know she did. She admitted it.

Abe: Well, then, you have to report it.

Steve: I can't do that.

Abe: You can't just let this go!

Steve: Shh, shh, shh. Man.

Abe: If she tampered with that plane with intent to kill, then you have to do something.

Steve: I will.

Abe: You have to report it.

Steve: Listen, man...there's no proof. She'd just deny it. It's my word against hers.

Abe: No one else saw her at the airport.

Steve: No.

Abe: You can't let her get away with this.

Steve: Shh. I won't.

Abe: Why is it always I with you, huh? Why can't it be we for just once in your life?

Steve: Listen to me, man. She is smart. I'm the one she wants. I'm the one who's closest to her. I can get her.

Abe: Then let us use you to lure her in.

Steve: She's too smart for that. And even if you do pick her up, she's got people out there who can hatch whatever crazy plan she's got cooking. Abe...she's got a bead on Kayla. She sent me a threatening note. Now, I would appreciate access to all your resources.

Abe: Yeah. I'll do whatever I can to help.

Steve: First we have to find her.

Abe: Well, we haven't been able to pinpoint her address, and if she's constantly on the move, that's not gonna be easy.

Steve: Right.

Abe: Look, I have one question for you. If she's after you, then why would she be willing to kill everyone on that plane?

Steve: I told you, man. I think she's crazy.

Max: I thought sorority sisters are supposed to stick together and watch each other's backs.

Morgan: We are, and we do. I'm not after Chelsea's boyfriend. I just want Nick to get his grant.

Max: That's what I want, too.

Morgan: We're on the same page, aren't we?

Stephanie: I wonder what they're talking about. Max doesn't look so happy.

Chelsea: Yeah, well, I don't really care what they're talking about. All I care about is my dad, so I think I'm gonna go see him.

Stephanie: Yeah. You should.

Chelsea: I'll see you later.

Morgan: Chelsea, oh, honey, I'm so sorry about your dad. I hope he feels better, okay?

Chelsea: Bye.

Morgan: Oh. I see an old boyfriend. I'm gonna go say hi.

Stephanie: What was all that about?

Max: Nothing important.

Stephanie: Are you sure?

Max: Yeah. We were just talking about Nick and how we both hope that he gets his grant.

Stephanie: Are you sure you don't want to start dating her again?

Max: Hell no.

Stephanie: All right, well, I want to leave something for my grandma. I'll be right back. What are you doing with Nick's binder?

Abe: Do you think she still loves you?

Steve: "Love"? I told you, she's obsessed, man.

Abe: Then why would she be trying to kill you?

Steve: That's a good question.

Abe: How do you think she found you?

Steve: I don't know, man. Maybe she was looking, maybe she found me by accident, but somehow she found out that Patch was Steve.

Abe: You know, I don't understand why she wouldn't try to talk to you at first.

Steve: I don't, either.

Abe: You said she sent her a threatening letter.

Steve: She hasn't gone after her yet, but I'm worried.

Abe: Of course you are. Does she need police protection?

Steve: No. No, the last thing she needs right now is stress. I'm being extra cautious.

Abe: Steve...how long has this stalking been going on?

Steve: I don't know, but I think Ava's capable of anything. She's dangerous.

Chloe: [Speaking German]

Philip: Any news?

Chloe: Regarding what?

Philip: Brady. You were speaking German. I just assumed you were talking to someone in Austria.

Chloe: Oh, I was, but it wasn't about Brady. I left some things in Vienna. I was having them sent over.

Philip: You have more?

Chloe: Sorry. [Clears throat]

Philip: What?

Chloe: Were you gonna offer to help me with my bags?

Philip: No.

Chloe: What?

Philip: I'd love to be your bellhop, Chloe, but I have a few very important things that need to be taken care of. Could you close that door?

Chloe: [Scoffs]

Philip: Hi, it's Philip Kiriakis. I'm at home. I need your help. As fast as you can get here.

Abe: Steve, do you think she's still out to kill you?

Steve: I don't know.

Abe: I don't believe you. I think you do know. Did she ever threaten you before? I mean, when you were seeing her?

Steve: No. I mean, she was -- she was pretty sweet, really. I mean, she was no Kayla, but she was a good kid.

Abe: Then her father took you into the family business.

Steve: Well, on the bottom rung. He didn't trust me. I left as soon as Ava started pushing.

Abe: Pushing you to marry her.

Steve: Yeah. Yeah. I mean, it got weird. She wanted it too badly. And, you know, even though I didn't remember anything from my past, I knew -- I just knew in my gut there was somebody else I was supposed to be with.

Abe: Any of her father's boys come looking for you after you left?

Steve: No. No, I thought she'd just get over it. Move on. My mistake, huh?

Abe: Yeah. Well, you got that right. So, what about her father?

Steve: Well, he just -- I don't think he cared that I left. I mean, he wanted his daughter to be happy and all that, but he didn't like me very much.

Abe: Steve, I want you to be honest with me. Why didn't she just...kill you?

Steve: She said to me... that she suffered all these years since I left her, so she wanted to see me suffer, too.

Abe: So, what do you need from me?

Steve: Just that report right now. If I need anything else, I'll let you know.

Abe: All right.

Steve: Hey, Abe, thanks for not playing by the book on this one.

Abe: Well, I think...in all these years from being around Bo...it might have rubbed off.

Steve: It's about time.

Abe: [Chuckles]

[Doorbell rings]

Philip: Thanks for getting here so quickly.

Stephanie: You're not trying to read that stuff in Nick's binder, are you? Just a bunch of scribble scratch. Or at least it is to me.

Max: Yeah, me too.

Stephanie: I really hope he's successful, though.

Max: Yeah.

Stephanie: You don't seem too enthusiastic. You're not jealous, are you?

Max: Of course not.

Stephanie: I mean, because you're special, too... just in a different way.

Max: Oh. Special like the bartender who's in trouble with the law -- that kind of special? Is that what you're talking about?

Stephanie: No. You're wonderful. My knight in shining armor.

Max: You might not always think of me that way.

Stephanie: Why not?

Max: Never mind.

Man: Hey, is there a bartender around here?

Max: You know, it's my shift. I, uh, should get back to work.

Stephanie: Yeah. Nick. Don't lose these.

Nick: Thanks.

Morgan: Hey, I wouldn't be leaving these around if I were you.

Nick: Why not?

Morgan: I've got something to tell you about your friend Max.

[Door opens]

Kayla: Oh. Hmm, look at that.

Steve: Your popcorn, baby.

Kayla: Thank you.

Steve: There you go.

Kayla: What's on it?

Steve: Well, a little salt, butter, parmesan cheese. Try it. You'll like it. I'm sorry.

Kayla: No, no, no, no, no. It's an acquired taste. Let me just try it. Come on. I'll try it again. Maybe I need to eat a few.

Steve: No, it's all right. Come on. I should have made it like we always do.

Kayla: You never make popcorn.

Steve: Well, then, I should have made it like you always do.

Kayla: I put it in the microwave for 3 1/2 minutes.

Steve: Oh, that's the secret? 3 1/2 minutes, huh?

Kayla: [Chuckles] How did you ever survive without me?

Steve: I don't know, baby.

Kayla: Hey. Hey, hey, hey, hey. Come sit down with me. Why are you being so good to me?

Steve: Because I love you.

Kayla: I love you, too. But that's not answering my question.

Steve: Well, I'm doing things for you because you're supposed to be relaxing right now. You're relaxing for two, remember?

Kayla: Well, I've been pregnant before, and you didn't wait on me hand and foot.

Steve: Well, there weren't complications with Stephanie.

Kayla: You know, it's not that I'm complaining, because I'm not. But, you know, you really haven't taken your eyes off me.

Steve: That's because I don't ever want to take my eyes off you.

Kayla: Does this have something to do with what Abe came here to talk to you about?

Steve: Baby, I just love being close to you. Is there something wrong with that?

Kayla: No, there's not.

Philip: The only thing I understood was auf wiederhoren.

Man: That means "goodbye."

Philip: Thank you. I just said that was the only thing I understood. She was speaking to someone in Austria. What did she say?

Man: She was talking to her agent. Told him that he owes her because she made him a lot of money.

Philip: What else?

Man: She asked him not to tell anyone that she threatened Brady before he disappeared, that she didn't really mean it when she said, "I could kill you." It was just said in the heat of anger, a figure of speech not to be taken literally. And that if he keeps quiet, then she'll owe him.

Chloe: Hey. What's going on here?

E.J.: Annulment papers.

Sami: That was fast.

E.J.: All you need to do is sign it.

Ava: "I'm in love with Steve." Now I just need to figure out what your name is.

Hope: Stop it, both of you, because you're talking like it's over, and it's not. We have a lot of happy times ahead of us.

Victor: Yes, you do. I can guarantee it.
