Max: Ah, okay. Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa.
Mimi: Yeah, me too.
Max: Hang on. Hang on.
Mimi: What, are you not sure?
Max: No. No, no. I'm sure. Um, just not here. I mean, I want it to be more, I don't know --
Mimi: Max, wherever I am with you feels special.
Mimi: Yeah. When you're holding me and touching me the way you do, I don't really think about anything else but this.
Max: Oh, this just isn't right, Mimi. Come on. Not on the floor. Not in the dirt and grease. You deserve better than that.
Mimi: Okay, okay. Then let's go to Paris.
Max: Paris could work. I was thinking about more along the lines of your place.
Mimi: My mother's house? No. No. The garage floor would be more Romantic than my mom's house. Besides, I don't think she would want any unexpected guests right now.
Billie: Hey, Bonnie. Happy New Year.
Bonnie: Hope yours is better than mine.
Billie: It's been interesting. So, I got your message that you wanted me to meet you here. What's up? Are you okay?
Bonnie: Patrick's in jail.
Billie: I know. I know. I'm so sorry.
Bonnie: Well, what are you gonna do? You try to raise them right, and it just sometimes slips away from you. You know what I mean.
Billie: Yeah. Yeah, I think I do. Well, let me know if there's anything I can do to help you.
Bonnie: Well, now that you mention it, there is. I'm gonna be on my way later to the bus depot to pick up my youngest.
Billie: Connor? Connor's visiting?
Bonnie: Yeah. He's gonna be visiting for a while.
Billie: That's great, Bonnie.
Bonnie: See, now, that's the thing.
Billie: What thing?
Bonnie: Well, you said you wanted to help, right?
Billie: Yeah, absolutely.
Bonnie: Okay, what would really, really be a big help to me right now is if you and Chelsea could find another place to live.
Billie: What? You're kicking us out?
Belle: I don't understand. You think that we're being investigated by Child Services?
Shawn D.: When I went over to Max's shop to get my old job back, Mimi was there, and she took Claire outside to see some kittens, and all of a sudden, there was some guy who was snapping pictures.
Belle: Of Claire
Shawn D.: Yeah.
Belle: What did he want?
Shawn D.: That's just it. I ran out there and tried to ask him, but he was already in his car, and he sped off, and I couldn't get his license-plate number.
Belle: You think this person is working for Child Protective Services?
Shawn D.: Yeah. I do.
Belle: But why? What are they looking for?
Shawn D.: Anything that Victor can use against us.
Belle: You think Victor's behind this?
Shawn D.: I think that Victor is all over this. Do you remember how mad he got when we told him that we were cutting back his visits with Claire? My grandfather -- he does not like to be told what to do, especially when it involves his own pride and joy.
Belle: You mean Philip.
Shawn D.: He's got this bizarre idea that Philip is gonna be Claire's real father, and now all of a sudden, we're being investigated.
Belle: Oh, my God. Oh, my God. Shawn, you're right. He's trying to take our daughter. He's trying to take our baby.
Kayla: Oh. Steve. How's John?
Steve: He's not good.
Kayla: Well, that's no answer. What are they saying?
Steve: They're saying his brain might be damaged beyond repair.
Kayla: Oh, no.
Steve: He's supposed to be completely unresponsive.
Kayla: What do you mean, "supposed to be"?
Steve: You remember what happened when the EMT’s brought him in with me?
Kayla: You mean the way he reacted when you came up?
Steve: Yeah. The same thing happened again last night. His heart rate went up, and the monitors went crazy. What do you think that means, Kayla?
Kayla: I don't know. If the doctors say that his brain is basically dead, then he shouldn't be able to react that way. But...
Steve: But what?
Kayla: Miracles happen.
Steve: Yeah, that we both know. So, you think John might come around?
Kayla: He's obviously responding to you.
Steve: Yeah, but why me? Why does he only react that way when I'm around -- his hand shaking and adrenaline spiking?
Kayla: I don't know. Maybe it's as simple as you're his friend. I want to stop by the chapel on the way home, light a candle for John.
Marlena: [Gasps] John! Oh, John, you're awake! You're awake! I'm right here.
John: Where are you, Marlena? I need you.
Marlena: I'm right here, darling.
John: I need you so badly, Marlena!
Marlena: I'm here. I'm here. I'm right by your side.
Like sands through the hourglass, so are the Days of our Lives.
Marlena: Roman... before you came in, I had the strangest dream. I-I dreamt that -- that John sat up in bed and he was calling my name and he needed my help. And so I was calling back to him, and he -- he couldn't hear me and he couldn't see me. It was like he was looking right through me. I tried and I tried.
Roman: Doc, it was just a dream, just like you said -- just a dream. There's nothing to feel guilty about.
Marlena: He is in there. I know he is.
Roman: Marlena... I talked to Dr. Tucker. I know the prognosis. He says that John's brain --
Marlena: No. No. No! I will not hear this. And I don't care what the medical prognosis is, because that can't measure my prayers and that can't measure his heart! Don't try to tell me that John is gone. I won't believe you, because it is not true. It is not true.
Roman: So, uh, how long you been here?
Marlena: You know perfectly well how long I have been here -- since John was brought in.
Roman: You need to go home, get some rest.
Marlena: What I need is for you to bring in the man that did this to my husband and put him behind bars for the rest of his miserable life.
Roman: Believe me, I would like nothing better.
Marlena: Then why don't you just go ahead and do it? No. No. Don't you tell me this!
Roman: Doc, I am sorry. E.J. Wells got away.
Belle: I don't believe this.
Shawn D.: Come on. Nothing has happened yet, Belle. There is no way that Victor can take Claire away from us. We are her biological parents.
Belle: And Victor is Victor, who gets whatever he wants, no matter who he destroys, Shawn.
Shawn D.: Well, not this time. He's not taking our baby. Victor has got no legal right.
Belle: When has that ever stopped him before?
Shawn D.: Well, if that's what he's gonna do, if that's what this is about, let him take his best shot.
Belle: Could those pictures of Claire show that we were putting her in any danger?
Shawn D.: No. Claire wasn't even alone. She was with Mimi the whole entire time.
Belle: What about your dad? Maybe your dad could get Victor to back off. He is Victor's son.
Shawn D.: Yeah, you're right. I could talk to my dad and tell him what's going on.
Belle: Right, right. We should do that before it's too late. Come on.
Shawn D.: Let's go.
Beverly: Shawn Brady... I'm here to take Claire. Mr. Brady! Mr. Brady, open the door! Mrs. Kiriakis!
Max: Okay, so you're probably right about your place, with your mom being there and all, so, ah, let's to my crib.
Mimi: Why do guys always call their place a "crib"? It's so blankie teddy, as if you weren't big enough babies as it is.
Max: Whoa. Whoa. Are you calling me your baby?
Mimi: I'll let you know.
Max: Oh. Come here. Mmm.
Mimi: So, Max, is this place, or this "crib," of yours clean?
Max: Uh, define "clean."
Mimi: Well, are there old pizza boxes lying around?
Max: With or without old pizza in them?
Mimi: Moving along -- sheets on your bed?
Max: Oh, yeah. I have sheets. I have sheets.
Mimi: No, I mean, when's the last time you changed them?
Max: Oh, damn. Uh, Christmas?
Mimi: Which year? Should I even ask about your bathroom?
Max: The bathroom could be a deal breaker.
Mimi: Seriously, I don't care where we go. I just want to be with you.
Max: Even on this grossed-out garage floor? You won't feel...
Mimi: What? Cheap? Yeah, look, sure, it would be lovely to lie under the stars on a warm, tropical beach somewhere, but this place is special, too.
Max: Huh. How do you figure?
Mimi: Well, this is where we got to know each other. We went over your books, we talked. We started caring about each other. Face it, Max, this office is kind of like our crib.
Max: Oh. Crib. You know, you're the one person I know who could make a mangy garage sound like heaven.
Mimi: Well, that's exactly what this is gonna feel like in a couple more minutes. I love you.
[Door closes] Not again.
Max: Hey, Abby. Um, what's up? I thought I-I gave you the day off today.
Abby: I had some things to catch up on. I guess you did, too, huh? I'll try not to disturb you.
Max: Abby --
Abby: Next time, why don't you hang a tie on the door? It'll save us both a lot of embarrassment.
Mimi: Well... now I feel cheap.
Billie: You're evicting us?
Bonnie: It's not an eviction, per se. It's more like a temporary relocation.
Billie: Bonnie, I've paid my rent every month on time.
Bonnie: You are dream tenants, both of you.
Billie: Then what's the problem?
Bonnie: We need space, as a family, with Connor coming home.
Billie: I can move into Patrick's room, and then that'll make plenty of space for everybody.
Bonnie: Please don't fight me on this. I want you and Chelsea back as soon as Connor leaves. So just for now, maybe you two could stay at your mom's.
Bonnie: It would just be for a couple of weeks.
Billie: A couple of weeks with my mother? That's an eternity. I'd never survive it. I'd open a vein!
Bonnie: All right. Here's what I'll do. I'll give you a refund. I'll pay you back half your rent that you already gave me. You could stay at the Salem Inn.
Billie: You know how much the Salem Inn costs, not to mention the fact that I can't just snap my fingers and find another place for me and Chelsea to live on such short notice!
Bonnie: Of course. I understand. I know it's short notice. If you and Chelsea can't find another place to live, I'll just find a way to make it work. I'm sorry. I'm just having such a hard time keeping my family together. We've been through so much lately.
Billie: Bonnie --
Bonnie: My little boy is going to prison. I wish I could take his place, but I can't!
Billie: Bonnie! Bonnie! Shh!
Billie: Fine. Okay. Look. You do what you have to do, and we'll figure something out.
Bonnie: Really? You mean it?
Bonnie: I'd -- I'd be happy to help you pack.
Billie: Oh, that's awfully big of you. I think I can handle it.
Marlena: How could you let E.J. get away?
Roman: Doc, I don't know how he pulled it off. We just got a wire from the Feds that he was seen in Mexico City.
Marlena: So that means everything John did to stop his evil was for nothing.
Roman: No, Doc, it wasn't.
Marlena: My husband is in there fighting for his life -- fighting his way back to us -- and E.J. is in Mexico celebrating?
Roman: We will get him, even if I got to go down there and grab him illegally. He will pay for what he did to John.
Beverly: Mr. Brady!
Santos: Open the door.
Beverly: Mrs. Kiriakis, I've got a court order allowing me to take the child -- Claire Kiriakis.
Steve: Hey, hey. Let me see that.
Beverly: Who might you be?
Steve: Well, I might be Shawn Brady's uncle, and this is his aunt. Kayla Brady Johnson. Steven Earl Johnson. Who the hell are you?
Beverly: I'm a licensed social worker with Child Protective Services.
Kayla: There must be some mistake.
Beverly: I assure you, I'm well within my rights.
Steve: Taking a baby away from its mother?
Kayla: On what grounds?
Beverly: I'm not at liberty to discuss the case. But if your nephew and his girlfriend won't cooperate, I'll instruct Officer Santos here to remove the chapel door.
Steve: Come on. Take it easy. You got a scared couple of kids in there. You got a father trying to protect his family -- that's all.
Beverly: I'm just here to do my job.
Steve: Yeah, I bet you sleep like a baby.
Kayla: Listen, please, let us talk to them.
Beverly: It's not going to change the outcome.
Steve: No? So give us 10 minutes. Will that kill you?
Beverly: All right. You have five minutes.
Steve: Oh. "Five minutes."
Steve: Hey, Shawn, Belle. This is your Uncle Steve. Aunt Kayla's out here with me. Can we come in?
Shawn D.: I'll let you and Kayla in, but Healy and the cop stay outside.
Beverly: How do I know what you two are gonna do once you get in there?
Steve: You have my word. I'll get Claire out of there safely. That is your job -- protecting children -- right? Okay, Shawn, come on. Open up. Just me and Kayla are coming in. It's all right.
Kayla: Belle. It'll be all right, Belle. Shh! Hey, baby.
Shawn D.: So, did you see the court order?
Shawn D.: What did it say?
Steve: Victor's filed for full custody of Claire.
Shawn D.: How can he do this? This is wrong, Steve. You know it is.
Steve: It doesn't make any sense to me, either, dude, but that cop out there tells me that Kiriakis is serious.
Shawn D.: I don't give a damn who is outside. I am not letting anyone take our baby.
Kayla: Shh! Shh! Shh! Shh! Shh! Shh! It's okay.
Max: Hey, can we talk about this?
Abby: Talk about what?
Max: You're obviously upset.
Abby: Yeah, and you have no idea why.
Max: I'm sorry you walked in on what you walked in on.
Abby: Just forget it! Go find Mimi. Get a room. I have work to do.
Roman: Doc, listen to me. I promise you, we are gonna track him down.
Dr. Tucker: Dr. Evans... I have the second set of test results.
Dr. Tucker: I'm sorry, but there isn't any change. EEG's the same. GSC is still at 3.7, and he isn't responding to stimuli.
Marlena: He responded to Steve Johnson.
Dr. Tucker: Look, as I explained earlier, he can't be responding to Mr. Johnson or anyone else. His brain isn't functioning at that level. I'm sorry. I wish I could be more optimistic.
Roman: So, that's it? You're just writing him off?
Dr. Tucker: I'm sorry.
Marlena: We don't need your sympathy. We need your help.
Dr. Tucker: A colleague in St. Louis who specializes in brain injuries.
Roman: All right. Thank you, doctor. Thank you for your time.
Marlena: John, I've never felt so desperate. I'm a doctor. I believe in science. I believe in medicine. And right now, the only thing that makes any sense at all is to beg God for a miracle. John, please. Please, open your eyes. Say my name.
Roman: Doc... listen to me. I know you don't want to hear this, but you are gonna have to prepare yourself --
Marlena: No, I'm not! John needs me to believe that he's coming back to us, and that's what I will do. I will believe that until the moment that he does.
Shawn D.: I knew this was gonna happen. I should have had a plan.
Kayla: You know what, Shawn? When you get out of here, we'll get you an attorney.
Belle: I'm not going anywhere without my baby.
Beverly: Your five minutes are up!
Steve: Hang on! Nobody's going anywhere!
Shawn D.: Steve, I need you to distract the cop and the witch from Protective Services while I get Belle and Claire out of here.
Steve: And then what?
Shawn D.: I drive.
Kayla: Where are you gonna go?
Shawn D.: Far away from here, where nobody's ever gonna find us.
Steve: Listen, Shawn, we understand how you feel. You're trying to protect Belle and your daughter. But running away is just gonna dig you in deeper. It's not the answer, man.
Shawn D.: Well, then give me something else, Steve? What would you do if you were me?
Steve: Well, a few years back, I probably would have done what you're thinking about doing now -- turned a lousy situation into a train wreck.
Shawn D.: So, that's it? We just hand Claire over and let the system work things out?
Steve: Right now that's what you have to do until we can get you a lawyer to look into this thing and find out what Kiriakis has actually got.
Belle: We didn't break any laws. We didn't do anything wrong.
Kayla: Nobody is disputing that, but you cannot ignore a court order. It is gonna be a temporary thing. There is no way that they're gonna take a child away from its biological mother.
Belle: But it does happen. There's no guarantee that Victor won't win. They're gonna say we're unfit. They're gonna say Claire is better off with Philip.
Steve: Then you prove to them that you are fit, that you're both loving and responsible parents. That's what you do.
Shawn D.: You say the word and we're out of here.
Steve: You do that and you're giving Kiriakis all the ammunition he needs.
Kayla: Not to mention the fact that he'll catch you. Steve and I lived a life on the run. We remember what it's like -- looking over your shoulder every minute of every day. You're just trying to disappear into the crowd. You lose a big part of your life when you're running away. What about poor Claire? What kind of life is that gonna be for her?
Steve: Listen. Kids --
Steve: Oh, yeah, it's all right. It's a rotten situation. You can't trust the system. But trust the people who love you. We will fight like hell with you to make this thing right. You're not alone. You got family, friends around you. They're ready to support you every step of the way. But it's your call. What's it gonna be? [Pounding on door]
Beverly: All right. We're coming in.
Roman: What about a second opinion? Do we go for it?
Marlena: No, no, no. They will run the same tests and get the same opinions. Science is not on our side.
Roman: Well, if they can't help him here, there are other rehab facilities.
Marlena: No. No. He's not going to a nursing home where they don't know who he is. They won't know the kind of man he is. They won't know how loved he is and how respected he is.
Roman: Well, I am sure when the time comes, you'll make the right decision. You've got the strength to do that.
Marlena: Yes, I do. John gave me that. And I will need all of it just to get him through this.
Roman: Well, let me help you.
Marlena: Roman, you're a good man and you're a strong man, but how -- how can you help me?
Roman: By being your friend.
Max: Abby, I know you don't like Mimi, but I do.
Abby: And I'm thrilled for you, really. Now, if you'll excuse me --
Max: No, not until you tell me what's bugging you.
Abby: Fine. I have been loyal. I have kept this business running while you went to Georgia with Mimi to look for Philip. I froze my butt off Christmas Eve trying to look for you.
Max: You saved our lives.
Abby: And what do I get? Not even a thank-you, not a card, not even a token of your -- of your appreciation.
Max: Come on. I can't believe I didn't thank you.
Abby: Well, believe it. Now, give me one good reason why I should stay here and keep this low-rent job.
Max: Because I need you.
Bonnie: Oh, Mimi, you got my message.
Mimi: Yeah. You said it was some kind of family emergency. Is Patrick okay?
Bonnie: Well, no, it's not about Patrick this time. It's about your younger brother.
Mimi: What did he do now?
Bonnie: Why do you always assume he's in trouble?
Mimi: I don't know. Maybe because he's at a boot camp for juvenile delinquents.
Bonnie: It's a boot camp for troubled teens.
Mimi: Whatever. Connor should be working toward his diploma, not playing cowboy. What is the crisis this time?
Bonnie: I asked him to come home for a while until we find out what's happening with Patrick.
Mimi: When is he getting here?
Bonnie: He was supposed to be here this morning at the bus depot, but he never showed, and I've been calling his cellphone.
Bonnie: I couldn't afFord plane fare.
Mimi: And you sent him cash?
Bonnie: How else was he supposed to buy his bus ticket?
Mimi: And you're wondering why he hasn't shown up. He takes after you.
Mimi: He took the money and ran.
Caroline: Interesting reading there?
Billie: I'm looking for a place to live.
Caroline: I thought you and Chelsea were staying at Bonnie Lockhart's.
Billie: Well, Bonnie's son Connor is coming home for a visit, and she needs the space.
Caroline: When does she want you to leave?
Caroline: Oh! Talk about short notice.
Billie: Yeah, tell me about it.
Billie: Caroline... do you -- do you have any rooms available above the pub?
Caroline: Oh, no, no, I'm sorry. Well -- well, there's Bo's room-- uh, well, Bo is staying with Hope and the new baby, and, well, I mean, you might ask if it's okay for you and Chelsea to use his room.
Bonnie: Connor would never use the cash I gave him to just take off.
Mimi: You made a huge mistake trusting him to come home.
Bonnie: Since when is it a mistake to trust your kid?
Mimi: Gee, I don't know. Since you've got one son in jail, the other one in juvie --
Bonnie: It's a resort.
Mimi: The last resort. Connor should be home with us, going to school, or at least living with dad.
Bonnie: We're not talking about your father.
Mimi: All right. We'll just pretend he never existed. So, what do you want to do about Connor?
Bonnie: I was hoping you'd have an idea.
Mimi: What else can we do besides wait? See if he calls or shows up on the next bus.
Bonnie: You really think he ran away?
Mimi: I don't know, Mom.
Bonnie: I just wish this family wasn't such high-maintenance.
Max: It's true, Abby. You did keep this place up and running. If I've neglected you or taken you for granted or didn't say the right things at the right time, I'm sorry.
Abby: I better get back to work.
Max: So, are we okay?
Max: I promise I will never take you for granted again. Hey, I'm serious. I want you back. We're a good team.
Abby: Oh. "A good team."
Max: What, you don't think so?
Abby: So, where's my Christmas bonus, boss?
Max: It's right here.
Billie: I don't think it would be such a good idea for me to move into Bo's room. I mean, it's gonna be hard enough for me to tell Chelsea that we have to move out, but on top of everything else, Chelsea and I would be sharing a room.
Caroline: Ah. Well, I just don't think they'd mind.
Billie: Maybe. But you know what? I've been promising Chelsea that we were gonna get our own place, and if I can find something afFordable, that'll get us out of all that Lockhart
Caroline: I see. Well, you know, if you want a place for Chelsea to stay while you're trying to find a permanent place, you -- Shawn and I could let her use our spare bedroom.
Billie: You would let Chelsea live with you?
Caroline: Well, after all, she's our grandchild.
Billie: Thank you, Caroline. I just might take you up on that.
Billie: Okay. In the meantime, back to apartment hunting.
Roman: Marlena, listen to me. You've got to go home and get some sleep. It is for John's welfare, as well as your own. You've got to be strong, and you've got to be sharp. Now, come on. Come on. I'll give you a lift.
Marlena: In a minute.
Roman: All right. I'll be outside when you're ready.
Beverly: Your time is up! Come on! Open the door! Your time's up!
Steve: They're not gonna wait all day.
Shawn D.: I know.
Steve: What's it gonna be? Okay. It's gonna be all right.
Beverly: I could charge you with obstructing justice!
Kayla: You're in a chapel, and you're gonna scare that child. Cut it out.
Beverly: I have a court order allowing me to take this child. Don't make this any more difficult.
Belle: Please don't take my baby. Remember that day before Christmas when we met at the Java Café? You were so nice, and you were friendly, and you even complimented us on what good parents we were.
Shawn D.: It was just an act. It was lies -- all lies. You didn't just happen to run into us. Victor Kiriakis sent you to take away our daughter. How much did he pay you, huh? How much does it cost to destroy a family?
Max: I bought it a few weeks before Christmas, but after everything that happened, I forgot to give it to you. I'm sorry. It's kind of lame.
Abby: "Shakespeare's Sonnets."
Max: Yeah. I thought about buying you some gloves or a scarf, but I remember you like to read, so I asked a woman in the bookstore to help and told her a little about you. She said you might like this. Have you read it?
Max: I could take it back and exchange it for something.
Abby: No. No, I love it. They're my favorite.
Max: There's a card inside, too.
Abby: "Here's wishing you a Merry Christmas, to my dearest Abby, a friend, confidante, and the closest thing to a little sister I'll ever have."
Max: Yeah. What? What's wrong?
Abby: I am not your little sister, Max. I am a woman.
Bonnie: What if Connor's been mugged? What if he's lying in an Arizona ditch somewhere with vultures circling overhead? Maybe that's him. Hello. It is. I'll be right there.
Mimi: What's wrong? Was that Connor?
Bonnie: No. It was the police. Your little brother's been arrested.
Beverly: I work for the county, Mr. Brady, and I can assure you that my dime hasn't been paid for by Mr. Kiriakis.
Shawn D.: So it's just a coincidence that he threatens us and now you show up with a court order?
Belle: You said you had children -- a son in the military, a granddaughter that you couldn't see because they were in Germany. Was that a lie? How would you feel if someone wanted to take your baby away?!
Beverly: I'm afraid I'm gonna have to ask the officer to intervene.
Kayla: Wait. Wait. Wait. Belle, listen to me. Listen to me. Please, just make it as easy for Claire as you can, all right? Come on. Come on. Be brave.
Belle: Okay. Okay. You're gonna go with Mommy and Daddy's friend, okay? And everything's gonna be okay. Nothing to worry about. We love you so much.
Beverly: Come here, sweetie. Hi.
Marlena: John... I have to go home for a while. I've got to try to get some rest. I'll be back. I promise. You were trying to tell me something the night this happened. Whatever it was, whenever you're ready, I'll be here... if you want to try to tell me again. I'm going now. I'll be back, and until then, you'll be able to feel my arms around you. I-I love you.
Sami: I think I know a way that you and Chelsea could live alone. Would you be interested?
Abby: You've got to stop whining for Chelsea and find a girl who likes you for you. You're not gonna stay a virgin forever, right?
Victor: I'll see you all in court.
Belle: That man doesn't deserve to live, does he?
Steve: She's his granddaughter!
