Lucas: Hey. I didn't give you permission to leave my arms.
Sami: Not even if I do this?
Lucas: Oh... well, all right, maybe this once.
[Knock on door]
Sami and Lucas: [Moaning]
Sami: I hope we're not overdoing it. This has got to be a record.
Lucas: No, no, we're making up for lost time.
Sami: I can't believe I'm not dreaming.
Lucas: No, you're not.
Sami: Ha ha ha.
Kate: It's going to be a nightmare!
Sami: Oh, my God! Aah!
Mimi: Belle's mom's test results came back.
Shawn-D: What happened? Is it a tumor?
Belle: No. The doctors can't find anything else wrong with my Mom that might've driven her to murder her friends and her family. If that's what really happened.
Mimi: It's awful when it's bad news that she's okay.
Belle: Yeah. I just wish there was something wrong with my Mom -- something that could be healed or explained or... something to make a jury understand that what my Mom did wasn't her fault. But now she's going to be found criminally responsible and sent to death row.
Shawn-D: I'm sorry.
Belle: Are you really?
Hope: Okay, so John refuses to testify against Marlena. Well, that leaves a huge hole in our case. But you know what, Bo? I'm not sure if giving her the truth serum is going to help.
Bo: I thought you were behind the truth? Don't you want to know why your dad and Mrs. H. and the rest of them lost their lives?
Hope: What kind of a question is that? I'm desperate to know.
Bo: Okay, then.
Hope: Bo, all I am saying is that Marlena agreed to have the test without any hint of an argument. It's almost as if she -- she's more desperate than all of us. She doesn't remember committing the crime. She doesn't remember confessing to John, either.
Bo: So what's your problem?
Hope: Bo, we have dealt with every kind of criminal, and I have never, ever once seen one who is this remorseful or confused. Our killer was cold-blooded and calculating. Marlena's not behaving like someone who has a premeditated plan.
Bo: And that's exactly how she was able to kill nine, maybe 10, people without us suspecting it, Hope. She's playing on our sympathies, hoping that we'll always be her friends.
Hope: She recanted her confession.
Bo: I don't care. Besides having John's eyewitness account, we have a mountain of circumstantial evidence. That blue suit that Belle saw her cutting up and destroying. She was in Tony's cubicle when he was killed. And we ignored that fact for the longest time because she wasn't a suspect. The powdered sugar inside her gloves from Mrs. H.'s doughnuts. And the fact that no one else has died since she's been in our custody, except her fellow inmate Tina who happened to die, what, an hour after Marlena was put in that holding pen with her. How much more convincing do you need that she's guilty?
Hope: I just want this to make some sense to me.
Bo: Well, here we go. We give her the Sodium Pentathol, we'll get the truth.
John: Doc, I know how much you want answers. We all do, but this isn't the way to go. Sodium Pentathol is a drug, and it's a very dangerous drug to be putting into your system. Especially a system that's already on stress overload with everything that's happened here. Now, if things don't go your way --
Marlena: Is that why you're so adamant that I not do this? Are you afraid that I'm going to incriminate myself? Is it because you think that I'm guilty?
Kate: Oh my God...
Sami: This is unbelievable. Get out!
Lucas: Relax. Relax.
Sami: Oh, my God. Stupid robe.
Lucas: I cannot believe you. What --
Sami: God, what are you doing here, Kate?
Kate: What are you doing here? I could hear noises through the thin walls out into the hallway! I didn't have any idea that... oh, God. Oh, God, I feel sick. I think I'm going to pass out.
Lucas: You what? Here. Here, sit down, sit down. Put your head between your knees.
Sami: And leave it there.
Kate: I heard that, Sami.
Lucas: Oh, Mom...
Kate: Oh, God.
Lucas: Are you feeling better?
Lucas: Did you eat anything today?
Lucas: Here, here, have some of this casserole you brought over in the middle of the night -- God knows why -- but here, take some.
Kate: Well, obviously, because I didn't understand what your appetites were.
Lucas: Come on.
Sami: Aah! Oh, my God!
Kate: There. Now I feel better.
Sami: Oh, my God. Aah! Aah!
Mimi: [Whispers] Let's go.
Shawn-D: Is that why you're pushing me away? You think I want bad things to happen to your family?
Belle: I love my Mom, Shawn. She means everything to me, and you can't seem to understand that. Every time it looks as though it's not my Mom's fault, you act like everything is going to be okay. But we always end up disappointed, and then you push away from me. You can say that you want to be there for me, but I don't think that you can.
Shawn-D: What are you talking about? I told you I want to spend the rest of my life with you, and what did you do? You walked away. Then you get some terrible news about your mother, and what do you -- you go into Philip's arms. I don't get it.
Belle: Here we go again. Shawn, I cannot be held responsible for everything that goes wrong with us. I'm sorry that you lost your grandmother and your great-grandmother. My Mom's probably going to be executed. But it's more than that. I think you're happy about it.
John: I am not convinced that you are criminally responsible for your actions. And as much as I want to know what happened, why it happened, and if someone else is behind this, it's not worth knowing if it means you're going to sacrifice yourself.
Marlena: John, I am still a doctor. And I think you're exaggerating the danger of this drug. I know that, clinically administered, it can be completely safe.
John: Let me tell you something. All we know for sure is what I saw in the cemetery, the phone call I received from Alice, the confession you made me before you fell off the balcony. Now, Bo and Hope -- they're going to ask you for the facts -- the facts that only you know in your subconscious. And those facts can be damning.
Marlena: But there could be extenuating circumstances, also.
John: Well, what if they don't ask the right questions to elucidate what those are? We don't know what they're going to ask, we don't know what you're going to say. Now, you've refused a lawyer. You've basically signed away your rights here. And if things don't go your way, the state is going to put you to death. Doc, is the truth worth losing your life? We don't want to lose you, Doc. We can't lose you, Doc. I can't lose you, Doc.
Sami: Oh, my God! This is disgusting!!
Lucas: Hold on, Sami, hold on.
Sami: God, Kate, what are you -- sick?
Lucas: Mom, here's a paper bag. Breathe in it.
Lucas: Let me help you, Sami. You're a mess. Don't worry.
Sami: I want the paper bag. I want to put it over Kate's head and smother her to death with it. Give me that. Lucas, she's ruined our whole evening.
Lucas: No, she didn't. I won't let her do that, all right? Here, let me just clean you up. Let me help you. Oh, my God.
Kate: That's for all the insults that you have hurled at me about my call girl past, Sami.
Lucas: God, Mother.
Kate: You're even the bigger tramp because you are -- you have used your body, you've trapped men, and you've fooled yourself into thinking that it's love.
Kate: Well, it's true! It's not love, Sami. It's lust. It's hormones. It's basic biology. Lucas -- he doesn't love you. He doesn't even like you. And before too long, he's going to hate you more than he ever has.
Bo: Fancy Face, at this point, I will do anything to make sure no one else dies. I want Marlena behind bars and on the fast track to a lethal injection. I want her out of our lives for good.
Hope: You promised that you would avenge your brother's death. If he were here, what do you think he would tell us, Bo?
Bo: Well, he's probably in heaven looking down on us right now, and he'd want us to be forgiving.
Hope: Sarcasm duly noted, but, yes, I think your brother, your mother, and Gran would tell us to be compassionate. Roman loved Marlena. She was like family. And what happens if Shawn ends up marrying Belle --
Bo: No. No. That monster in there will never be family again. You got that? Never.
Shawn-D: Why would you think that your family suffering would make me happy?
Belle: How many times have I heard you say that you wanted the killer to pay?
Shawn-D: It's only natural -- I didn't know it was your mom, either, okay?
Belle: What if my Mom really is the killer? You still feel the same way, don't you? No matter what you say, I can see it in your eyes, Shawn. You can't deny it.
Marlena: I don't want to leave my family, but if I'm guilty, you'll all be better off without me.
John: Don't say that. Just... what do I have to say to get through to you? Don't you know how much we all need you?
Marlena: John, I have to. I'd like to think there is some reasonable explanation for how I could do those terrible things. I'm a psychiatrist. I know there is no objective test that can prove someone's sanity. And I also have no symptoms of any disease that would make me behave like this. I can discern right from wrong, and I've got to take responsibility for my actions.
John: How can you be responsible if you don't even remember what happened?
Marlena: That was because -- that was because I hit my head. But I-I must've known before that. I hurt people over and over again. I... I'm guessing that was -- I don't know -- to protect myself or maybe... maybe to keep you from finding out.
John: Doc... Stefano DiMera made Hattie Adams over in your image. You know, he was plotting to have her take over your whole life. I mean, how do we know there's not more of you out there waiting in the wings? I mean -- I mean, he's done it before. Look, remember Susan Banks? And then there was that Sister Mary Moira?
Marlena: John, John, I confessed to you. How do we explain that away? And if we could... I'd want to do that. I'd want to know it right now, and if we can't, if I am guilty, I want to end all this suffering. I want it to be over now.
Lucas: I am so sorry. Here. I'm gonna get her out of here, okay? You gonna be all right?
Lucas: You sure? All right. Mom, come on. Come on.
Lucas: What? What is it? What?
Sami: She has my key, and I want it back!
Lucas: All right. I'll handle it, all right? Relax.
Lucas: Mom, Sami says you have to --
Kate: I heard her, Lucas. I heard her. I don't need a translator, okay? But I have one more thing to say to you.
Lucas: No. No more. That's it. You're done. It's over. You got to get out of here right now. This is Sami's apartment. She doesn't want you here. You have to go.
Belle: She's always going to be my Mom, Shawn. I'm always going to love her.
Shawn-D: Yes, I know that.
Belle: And I'm a part of her. I think you're hating me because of that. I don't know what I'm going to do.
Shawn-D: I don't hate you. I love you.
Belle: Then why did you want to leave town and put space between us?
Shawn-D: To clear my head. How many times do I have to explain that to you?
Belle: I needed you!
Shawn-D: I know, and that is exactly why I decided to stay.
Belle: I needed you before that. You can say that you don't blame me, but I don't believe you. God, Shawn, I blame myself. If my Mom ends up being guilty, that means I trusted her when I shouldn't have. And my Mom is the most loving person that I know. If I can't trust her love, can I trust anyone's?
Shawn-D: All right, whoa, whoa. Hold on a second, hold on a second. Are you saying you can't trust me the same way you can't trust your mother, who is a serial killer?
Belle: I am saying that my Mom is the person who taught me to love. She taught me everything that I know. And this could be one of the last times I get to spend with her ever. But instead of being in there with her, I am out here with you arguing one more time, and I am tired of it. I want to be with my Mom right now even if she is guilty, and if you can't accept that that's important to me, maybe it's time to move on for both of us.
John: Do you still love me?
Marlena: How can you ask me that?
John: Well, you were frightened of me after Celeste's premonition and after Roman's death. You even asked me to move out of the penthouse. You remember that, right?
Marlena: I've been trying to think what was on my mind then. I -- I guess I was just afraid that I would hurt you, afraid of what I knew I was capable of doing to you.
John: Well, let me tell you something. Cold-blooded killers don't worry about protecting the people they love, because cold-blooded killers don't love anybody. You know, Stefano DiMera created your husband to be an emotionless, cold-blooded killing machine. And God only knows the horrible things I've done in the past. But I don't remember either. All I know is that your love saved me. My life started the day that I met you, Doc.
Marlena: It's not the same. It isn't the same. John, we are talking about the loss of family and friends, people -- people that I loved so deeply. And now we have to -- we have to face them. And I will be a continual reminder of the pain they have been through, of what I've done to them.
John: I can live with anything as long as you're here. I just can't live without you. My whole life, all I remember is loving you, and I am living proof that love can heal anything. You taught me that. You taught me that, Doc. Now please just... let me love you now.
Kate: Lucas, I'm your mother. You know the hell I went through when I was carrying you? I did everything I possibly could to bring you into this world healthy. I sacrificed my dignity to give you the best of everything. And this is the thanks I get? If I walk out that door...
Lucas: Don't make me choose between you and Sami.
Lucas: I'm so sorry.
Shawn-D: I didn't ask you to leave your mother's bedside. I wouldn't keep you from supporting your family, the same way I hope you wouldn't keep me from supporting mine.
Belle: Shawn, if we get married, it isn't going to be yours and mine. It's going to be ours. I think you should really think about that. I mean, can your mom and dad accept me into your family after this?
Shawn-D: Yes, of course. They love you.
Belle: Can they accept my Mom? Can you? 'Cause I'm not going to turn my back on her right now. Think about it.
John: You know, there's a logical explanation for everything that's happened. Complicated to be sure, but we need to allow ourselves enough time to find the truth. Listen, I understand what it's like not to know. Not to remember or to be able to confront the horrors of our past. I understand that.
Marlena: I know. I know we need time to find the truth. But it isn't our decision. That's Bo's and the D.A.'s, and they want me now.
John: If you let them rush to judgment, you don't get another chance. Doc, listen, I understand that you're overwhelmed with this guilt right now, but we don't even know that you are guilty.
Marlena: John, I don't know what to say about it.
John: Well, the last thing you want to do is say it under Sodium Pentathol. 'Cause if you say anything that points to your guilt, I will lose you! Just like that, it's gone. I will never be able to touch you, hold you, make love to you ever again. It is gone! Now you listen to me. I already told them. I'm not gonna testify against you, and I am their whole case. So if you don't take that truth serum, you are practically guaranteed to go free, and then we will have all the time in the world to work through this... together. Do you see what I'm saying?
Marlena: I'm practically guaranteed... to go free. To kill. To hurt. To hurt you. To hurt Belle or -- or Sami. John... I can't do that. Don't you see? It's because I love you so much that I have to know the truth. Myself. I'm so happy I went to camp Shane.
John: It's really to lifestyle. And on weekends, she's spending.
Sami: Lucas, your mother absolutely hates me. Here's your tea.
Sami: You know she's going to do everything she can to keep us apart.
Lucas: She already has. And it didn't work. We've been through a lot, and we're together. So my mom's just kind of a speed bump in the road.
Sami: Yeah, well, we haven't even decided if we really are together, Lucas.
Lucas: Yeah, but we're trying, and that's a good step. You know what? I don't want to talk about my Mom anymore tonight. I want to enjoy being with you.
Sami: Uh, where are you going?
Lucas: Uh, you'll see.
[Soft music playing]
Lucas: Would you like to dance?
Sami: Neither of us are very good at dancing.
Lucas: Who's watching? Come on.
Woman: Winter sun shines through the haze I feel lazy...
Sami: Ha ha ha. [Gasps]
Lucas: 1, 2.
Woman: Here and now is where I want to stay
Man: We interrupt this program to bring you a special repo.. here's an update on the fatal stabbing at the women's detention facility involving alleged serial killer Dr. Marlena Evans. Dr. Evans was rushed to Salem University Hospital a short while ago, where doctors have reported...
Sami: Oh, my God! Oh, my God!
Lucas: Get your coat and get your purse. Let's go. Hurry up.
Sami: Oh, God, Lucas, what are we gonna do?
Lucas: Don't worry about it, Sami.
Mimi: All I'm saying is if you keep hanging around Belle, of course people are going to start thinking something's going on between you.
Philip: Mimi, that's the thing. I haven't been. Are they going to say that about us, Meems? 'Cause, you know, I've been spending an awful lot of time with you, too, and you're pretty sexy. You think Bonnie's going to like us together?
Mimi: Oh, please. Well, wait. A buffed-out, rich Marine? She might go for it.
Philip: There you go.
Mimi: Ha ha.
Philip: Mom, what's -- what's wrong? What's wrong?
Philip: Are you okay?
Mimi: Uh, 911 from Rex. I got to go. Um, take care.
Philip: Mom, say something. What happened?
Kate: Don't wait. Don't sacrifice. Life is too short. If you don't find some happiness, if you don't give me grandchildren...
Philip: Grandchildren? Mom?
Kate: You're my last chance -- my last chance for any happiness, any justice in this life.
Philip: Come on, Mom.
Hope: Could we talk for a moment?
John: Yeah, sure, Hope.
John: I'll give you some space.
Marlena: Well, this is certainly uncomfortable, isn't it? You know, knowing what you think I did to... Alice... and to Doug...
Hope: I remember how I once hurt you so badly because of what Stefano did to me. It almost destroyed your marriage. And yet you forgave me.
Marlena: Well, that wasn't your fault.
Hope: And I truly don't think that any of this is your fault. If this is another one of Stefano's mind games, the real person responsible is the one that needs to pay.
Marlena: Hope, they, um... they gave me a full body scan. I don't have a microchip in my brain, so, um, Stefano is not behind this, and mercifully -- thank you, God -- he is dead.
Hope: He's always tried to tear our families apart. How much would it gall him to know that he failed, and that we were strong enough to find forgiveness even now?
Marlena: Hope, you're by yourself. Bo isn't here. I know he doesn't feel this way.
Hope: Not yet.
Marlena: Look, just -- just asking for understanding and forgiveness, it -- it causes so much tension and so much stress. Look, if you would, at what it's done to Belle and to Shawn.
Hope: I don't think you should take the truth serum.
Marlena: [Sniffs] [Sobs]
Marlena: [Sighs] Thank you... for saying that.
Marlena: I can't tell you... what that means to me.
Marlena: Hope... the truth... is healing. We all need that. And for better or for worse, this is what we have to do.
Shawn-D: I remember you telling me about when you and Mom first started dating, how her family didn't think that you were good enough for her.
Bo: Yeah, that was a problem we thought we might not get through. Almost didn't.
Shawn-D: Yeah, but what our families are going through now, this -- this is a million times worse.
Bo: Don't worry. Things will work out the way they're meant to.
Shawn-D: I hurt Belle by blaming her, Dad, but, really, I blame myself even more.
Bo: I know how you feel, son. I'm the police commander. It's not your job to protect anyone.
Shawn-D: But I could have. If only I would have realized that Belle couldn't possibly have been with Marlena when... grandpa was killed. I don't know. If I hadn't gotten so emotionally caught up, Dad, this all would have --
Bo: I know, I know, I know. Things could have turned out differently.
Kate: If there is any chance that you could find happiness with this woman, then I don't care if she's with someone. I don't care if Shawn Brady is your half-nephew or whatever he is. You have to snatch Belle up right now.
Philip: Shh. Come on. Shh. Be quiet.
Kate: Mama knows, doesn't she?
Philip: Please stop asking me to go after Belle, especially in public. My God, Shawn could be 10 feet away.
Kate: Oh, fine, fine. You know, I don't have the energy for matchmaking right now, because I'm going to need every ounce of strength I have to rescue Lucas from Sami. Murder is too good for her.
Sami: Thank you for calling ahead, Lucas.
Lucas: You're welcome. That news flash made it seem like Marlena was the one who was stabbed to death.
Sami: God, how could they even think of giving her truth serum? Those idiots. I don't mean any disrespect to my Uncle Bo and Aunt Hope, but if my Dad were here, this would not be happening.
Lucas: I know.
Sami: They can't see to catch a criminal, no matter what the crime is. God, you know, if they let my Mom die, it's not like they can say, "whoops, we made a mistake." If they let her fry, it's not like they can have a do-over when she's dead.
Belle: Sami, thank God that you're here.
Sami: Oh, sweetie. Hi, Belle.
John: Thanks for bringing her, Lucas.
Lucas: No problem.
Sami: You know, John, how could you even think of letting Mom take that truth serum?
John: Listen, I have done everything I could to talk her out of it, but, listen, we're not out of options yet, and I wouldn't ask this if there were any other way, but before you give me your answer, I want you to remember, I am asking for your mother.
Belle: What do you need us to do, Dad?
John: Well, I have appealed to Marlena every way I know how, but it's not the same as coming to her as a family unit. Samantha, I know that you feel that your family has been destroyed, but it will be forever beyond repair if we lose Marlena. So if there's one thing you have ever done with me in solidarity, with us, could you please do this for your mother?
Sami: You know that I would do anything for my Mom, John.
Philip: Oh, thank God. And we have a time-out on the floor as Roberts substitutes for Kiriakis. Good luck, bro.
Philip: Hope you can get through to her. Mom, I'm going to get something to eat. Would you like some food? Are you hungry?
Kate: No, no, thank you.
Philip: You sure?
Kate: So are we still talking?
Lucas: I am if you are. What are you doing here?
Kate: Well, I heard a news bulletin on the radio that Marlena is going to take a truth serum, and she's going to spill her guts about all the murders.
Lucas: I don't know if that's going to happen. Sami and Belle just went in there to talk her out of it.
Kate: Talk her out of it? What do you mean? She wanted to do it?
Lucas: Yeah, I guess so.
Kate: Well, good for her. Maybe now I'll find out what really happened to Roman, why she did it, what his last moments were like. Was he thinking about me? Was...
Lucas: Come on, Mom.
Kate: I remember that night that he -- he fought with Sami, and then after, he asked me to make peace with her. Oh, and I tried. God, I have tried, but she would not let it happen. She was going to be my stepdaughter, maybe. If Roman had lived, who knows? Maybe it would have worked out. But now I'm grieving for Roman, and I'm grieving for Cassie, and I'm grieving for you.
Lucas: Me? You're acting like I'm -- I'm dead or something.
Kate: You will be, because that's what Sami will do to you.
Lucas: No, she won't.
Kate: You know, it's going to be difficult enough for me tonight, so don't make it any harder. Lucas, if I have to watch you die a slow death at Sami's hands, I'll die, too.
Hope: In spite of everything we've lost, I am so grateful for what we have. We have to hold on to the love we have for each other and never take it for granted. Never let it slip away. Come here, honey.
Marlena: It's so good to see you both. How are you?
Sami: Oh, Mom, never mind about us.
Belle: We're worried about you.
Marlena: I'm so sorry for all the pain and humiliation that I've caused you. I just don't understand wh--
Belle: Mom, stop. We understand. The Mother we know never would have committed these murders.
Marlena: Apparently, I did. It wasn't possession, it wasn't a brain tumor. I-I just don't understand exactly what --
Sami: No, Mom, that's why we're here. We understand that you're thinking about taking some kind of truth serum tonight.
Sami: Mom, you understand that if you make any kind of confession, they're going to send you immediately to a maximum-security prison, that you're not going to be allowed visitors, that this could be the last time that we're all together as a family.
John: Did you hear that, Doc? She said "family." We are a family. There's a lot of love in this room right now. Look, whatever's happened, whatever choices you have made, it's not too late to make one last choice to protect your family. Now, I know that's what you think you're doing here, and you would make any sacrifice for us, but... if you sacrifice yourself, that is the worst loss that we can endure.
Sami: John's right. When have you ever heard me say that? Mom... loving you is so much more important to me than -- than hating John. Our family is so much more important to me than any-- than anything in the world.
Marlena: Sami. Oh, Sami.
John: Now that's one thing Samantha and I agree on -- it's loving you. Belle and Brady and -- and Eric, Carrie, and Will -- you need to know how much these people need you in their life. They love you with their whole heart, Doc. So don't leave us. Don't tell us this is goodbye.
