Hope: This is like our own private fireworks show.

Bo: Yeah -- just you, me, and the lights.

Hope: You know what?

Bo: What?

Hope: I feel I can just reach out and grab them, you know?

Bo: Here, let me do it for ya.

Hope: Ha ha!

Bo: Oh!  Got one!  Here.

Hope: Oh, Brady -- oh!

Bo: It jumped out of my hand!

Hope: Ooh, stop it!  Stop it!  I don't want -- Brady, I can't believe you! Stop it!  Stop!

Bo: Oh, all right, all right.

Hope: 'Cause otherwise I'll tickle you.

Bo: I'm not ticklish, no.

Hope: You used to be.  This was such a great idea.

Bo: Yeah, I know.  You already said that.

Hope: Ha ha!  I just want to tell you -- oh, wow!  Did you see that?

Bo: Yeah, I saw that.

Hope: Oh, my gosh.

Bo: You just want to tell me what?

Hope: This is what it's all about -- being out here on a beautiful night, sharing a blanket with you, watching the fireworks.  This was so wonderful.

Bo: Was?

Hope: Yeah.

Bo: This night ain't over yet, babe.

Tony: Well, are you having a good time?

Tony: What, are you cold?  Oh, here -- my jacket.

Woman: Is something wrong with it?

Lucas: I'm sorry?

Woman: Your drink.  Is there a bug in it, or something?

Lucas: No, no bug.

Woman: Is it the wrong color?

Lucas: No.  Color's fine.

Woman: You haven't touched it.

Lucas: I'm trying to decide whether I'm in the mood for it or not.

Woman: You know, if you're not in the mood for a drink, maybe you're in the mood for something else.

Brady: [Coughing] Whoo!  Boy!

Nicole: Oh, my god.

Brady: Did you just see that?

Nicole: Is that the car?

Brady: [Coughs] I -- yeah.  I mean, what's left of it.  It's right down there.

Nicole: Well, do you think he --

Brady: No.  No way.  That thing is mangled.

Nicole: Let's get the hell out of here!

Brady: Whoa, whoa!  No, no!  What, are you kidding?  We can't do that.  I have to call the police, then I have to go down there and see if he's still alive.

Nicole: Th-that's not a good idea.  H-he tried to kill Victor.  What if he's alive and still has a gun?

Brady: Yeah, hi.  There's been an accident.  Spring Hill road.  It's about six miles north of King's highway.  Yeah, the guy just -- he came around a corner and crashed through a guardrail and started careening down into the ravine. If he's still alive, he definitely needs medical attention.  Brady Black.  Yeah.

Nicole: There's no way he could still be alive.

Like sands through the hourglass, so are the days of our lives.

Hope: Wow!

Bo: Still make you see fireworks, huh?

Hope: Almost like we're right there watching them, Brady.

Bo: And the grand finale is yet to come.

Hope: That wasn't it?

Bo: Oh-ho-ho. I'm talkin' about the other kind of fireworks here.

Hope: You know what makes this night really special?

Bo: You mean besides the obvious -- us being here together?

Hope: No, no, that's it.

Bo: Oh.

Hope: Being together.  I mean, if you were still a cop, you might have had to work on a night like this.  Actually, it doesn't matter what night it is -- Fourth of July, Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year's Eve.

Bo: Yeah, a cop works when the public parties.

Hope: Yeah, don't I know it.  That's why I'm really, truly savoring this moment.  I'm not taking this for granted.  No way.  Sitting up here on Salem's bicentennial with you.

Bo: I've kind of missed this stuff, too.

Hope: Mm. I like you having your own work hours. I mean, that's one of the benefits of running our own business, right?

Bo: Yeah, well, we still have responsibilities. If we take an assignment, we can't just decide to take a couple days off...

Hope: I know that.

Bo: And hope some bail-jumper has a guilty conscience and turns himself in.

Hope: I know that, Brady, but we're still our own bosses, and we do get to decide which cases to take and which ones to turn down.

Bo: Well, right now we can't afford to turn down anything.

Hope: Right, that is true, but that's not going to be forever.  I mean, once we get the business up and running and get a little money in the bank, then we can start taking some time off, right -- special occasions, holidays?

Bo: Uh-huh.  What do you think we're gonna do with all this time off?

Hope: I'm sure we can think of something.

Bo: Mm-hmm.

Tony: Well, um, could I get you some more champagne?  Well, would you like something more to eat, some caviar?  No?  Would you like to leave?  No?  No, because I am enjoying myself, if that's what you're trying to say to me.

[ Romantic music playing ]

Tony: Ohh... someone had the foresight to bring their cd player. Isn't that lovely?  Ah.  Um...would you like to dance?

Woman: Which is it -- your girlfriend or your wife?

Lucas: Which is what?

Woman: The one you're having problems with?

Lucas: Um, I'm not married.

Woman: That's the answer I was hoping to get. So, I can handle a girlfriend.

Lucas: Don't have one of those either, not at the moment.

Woman: I'm not buying that, but that's okay.  Like I said, I can handle a girlfriend.

Lucas: Yeah, I'm sure you can.

Woman: You know, if you don't like that drink there, I can buy you one to take its place.

Lucas: No, no, this one's fine.  It kind of has my attention.

Woman: And how does a lonely girl get your attention?

Lucas: Well, we can start with a game of pool.

Woman: You're on.

[ Hangs up cell phone ]

Brady: Paramedics are on their way.  Whoa, whoa!  What are you doing?

Nicole: I, uh, was gonna check the wreck to see if the guy's dead.

Brady: What, are you kidding me with that?  It's too dangerous.  I'll go.

Nicole: No, no!  You can't!

Brady: I can't, when you were just going to go down there, wearing that? Nicole, look at your shoes.  Even if you made it down there, you wouldn't be able to get back up again.

Nicole: Neither could you.  It's too dangerous.  Y-you were right. I-I wasn’t thinking.  But what if the guy's still alive?

Brady: Well, that's exactly why I have to go down there.

Nicole: Well, just let the paramedics take care of it.

Brady: It could be a while before they get here, Nicole.

Nicole: Who cares if he's dead?  He tried to kill Victor!

Brady: If he's still alive, I need some answers before he goes.

Nicole: There's probably no way he could survive.

Brady: And the car could just burst into flames.

Nicole: Damn, I hope so.

Brady: Nicole, how could you say something like that?

Nicole: No, I mean -- I'm just so mad, I'm so freaked out.  Why wouldn't I be?  That scum tried to kill Victor.  I want to see him get what he deserves.

Man: You're the one who called?

Brady: Yes, I made the call.  I'm Brady Black.

Man: And the vehicle's down here?

Brady: Yes.  Yes, it is.  It just went crashing through the guardrail and started cartwheeling down the hill.

Man: All right, we got paramedics on the way.

Brady: This guy took a shot at my grandfather -- Victor Kiriakis -- at the Blue Note. He stole a car and drove out here, and we followed him.

Man: We heard.  Commander Carver's at the club now taking statements.  We weren't too far behind you when we heard the call on this.

Brady: He just took the turn too fast, you know?  He was doing like 90 miles an hour.  I guess he didn't make it.  And I was gonna go down there and see if he was still alive.

Man: No, we'll do that.  You stay here.

Brady: If he's still alive, can I have the opportunity to talk to him?

Man: That's a big "if.”  We're going down.  You guys let the paramedics know what's going on when they get here.

Brady: Okay.  Thanks, guys.

Nicole: Maybe we should go back to the Blue Note when the paramedics get here.

Brady: No, ..  I want to find out who this guy is. Find out why he wanted to kill my grandfather.  Nicole, you wouldn't have any thoughts on the subject, would you?

Tony: It was my pleasure.  I'm so glad that you wore that diamond pendant I gave you.  Hmm.  You know, it's very much like you.  It speaks volumes through its depth, its fire, its beauty. Do you know that only the most experienced cutters have the foresight to see a diamond's beauty when it's still in its raw state?  The trick is to maximize its true potential.  The cutting, the shaping, the polishing all has to be done with such precision and delicacy, because one misstep, and that stone can smash into a million worthless pieces.  But the thing that I liked the most was that only a diamond can cut another diamond. It's, um... nothing less than a true kindred spirit can scratch its surface.  But then, of course, you know, even a perfect diamond can't just stand alone. It needs something to complement it, to enhance it.  Oh.  By the way... this is for you.  No, come on, it's not going to bite you.  I promise.

Lucas: Ahh.

Woman: 8 ball. Ooh, too bad.

Lucas: Damn.

Woman: Maybe pool isn't your game.

Lucas: Sure isn't tonight, that's for sure.

Woman: Maybe you'd be interested in a different game.

Lucas: Uh, I don't think so.  I don't think tonight's my night, 'cause I got a lot on my mind.

Woman: I wasn't talking about pool.

Lucas: Gotcha.

Woman: I've got plenty of ways to make you forget about her.

Woman: You may be having an off night in pool, but I'll bet you'll be right on the money in some of the game that we could play at my place.

Lucas: Uh, that sounds really tempting, and I'll probably kick myself tomorrow, but I don't think I'd be very good at playing games tonight.

Woman: Any kind of games?

Lucas: Any kind.  I-I'm sorry. Please don't take it personally, because you are beautiful.  It's just I'm not really in a good place tonight.

Woman: You sure?

Lucas: Yeah, I'm sure.  Again, I'm really sorry, okay?

Woman: I'm the one who's sorry.

Lucas: Well, don't be.  You know, um, maybe some other time.

Woman: Yeah.  Maybe.  I hope you get those lady troubles taken care of.

Lucas: Yeah, me too.

Woman: Good night, sweetie.

Lucas: Good night.  Thanks for the game of pool.

Man: Hey, I was just about to toss that out.  You want some fresh ice in that?

Lucas: No, no, it's fine.  Thanks.

Man: So how was the game?

Lucas: Lost.

Man: Well, like they say, lucky in love, unlucky at pool.  Or something like that.

Lucas: Whatever they say.

Man: Well, don't feel like you have to ration that drink.  I got a couple more bottles of vodka hiding behind the bar.

Lucas: Noted.

Man: Hey!  Do we have a problem here, pal?

Lucas: No.  No problem.  I thought I saw something in my drink.  I'm sorry about the mess, sir.  Why don't I just, um... here.  That should take care of it.  Maybe you could get me a cup of joe or something. I'd really appreciate it.  Thanks.

Lucas: Thanks again.  And I'm sorry, okay?

Lucas: Uh, hey.  It's Lucas.  Look, I know it's late, but I really need to talk to you.

Tony: Ha ha ha.  I take it you like them.

Tony: Ahh.  They're exquisite.

Tony: You're very welcome.  Now, I think -- I think we should leave.  Oh, no, I don't mean for the night to be over.  I'm just saying that it's getting a little chilly.  Maybe we should just go back to my place and have a nightcap.  What do you think?

Bo: Sounds to sweeten the evening.

Hope: Mmm.  Couldn't get much sweeter.

Bo: You got that right.

Hope: Would you like some more wine?

Bo: Sure.

Hope: Okay, and I get to make the next toast.

Bo: All right.  What?

Hope: I'm thinking.

Bo: Mm-hmm.

Hope: May this be the start of a long string of parties, holidays, family gatherings, and celebrations that we get to enjoy together.

Bo: Hear, hear.

Hope: Hear, hear.

[ Cellular phone rings ]

Bo: What did I do with that phone?  Uh... it's not --

[ Ring ]

Bo: Brady.  No way.  Right now?

Nicole: Oh, they're almost at the car.

Brady: Nicole, look at me.  Do you have any idea who would want to kill grandfather?

Nicole: It -- it could be anybody.  Anybody he does business with.  You do know what kind of business I'm talking about, don't you?

Brady: No.  No, not really.

Nicole: You -- you actually believe that Victor's the honest, forthright, upstanding businessman he claims to be?

Brady: I know that Victor Kiriakis is the C.E.O. of Titan, and that it's legitimate.

Nicole: That's all you know?

Brady: He has other interests.  I'm not sure exactly what they are, but he made me agree not to ask him about that part of his life.

Brady: Wait a second.  It's the same guy!  It's the same guy!  It's got to be!

Nicole: What?

Brady: The shooting at the pool.  Think about it, Nicole.  It was dark.  The shot came from a long distance.  They must have thought they were shooting at Victor.  And they didn't get the job done that night, so they tried to finish it tonight, and they damn near did.

Nicole: You don't honestly believe that the two shootings are related?

Brady: Well, I'm sure that the police are putting it together right now.  So I suppose the only thing we need to do now is find out who's behind the whole thing.

Nicole: I suppose.

Brady: Once the police get a name on at guy down there, we'll know, too.

Maggie: I'm glad you called.

Lucas: Hey, Maggie.  Hi.  Um, thanks for coming so quickly.

Maggie: Talk to me, Lucas. Don't sugarcoat it. Just tell me what's going on with you.

Lucas: Well... I've, uh... I've been drinking again.

Maggie: That would have been my thought.

Lucas: Not that hard to figure out, is it?

Maggie: Well, you're not going to A.A. Meetings, and you're not returning my phone calls.

Lucas: Yeah, but you know what? I'm not drinking that much. I have one drink, that's all. It's not like I'm out of control.

Maggie: Well, if that's what you believe, then you wouldn't have called. We both know that there's no such thing as control for alcoholics. And, Lucas, that's what you are. That's what you'll always be. So, what was it?

Lucas: What was what?

Maggie: What was it that started you drinking again?

(Sami’s Flashback)

Sami: Let me go! Let me go!

Tony: Oh, I'll let you go, Sami! You can go to hell!

Sami: [ Gasps ]

Tony: Sami, Sami. I'm sorry. I realize bringing you back here tonight may have stimulated some terribly painful memories for you. I just want you to believe I feel terrible about what happened, and I know you'll always hold me responsible. I'm not asking for you to forgive me. I was just wondering -- is there anything I can do to make it up to you?

[ Sirens approaching ]

Brady: Paramedics are here.

Nicole: Probably don't need them now, right? I mean, the guy's got to be dead by now, right?

Man: I'm guessing the victim is down in the car.

Brady: Yes, yes, he is. He's down in the ravine.

Man #2: No. There's no one in the car.

Nicole: What?! You mean he not only survived, but he got away?

Bo: Ha ha. You're right. I owe you big time. Bye. Before you say anything now, I did not break our promise. I didn't call them. They called me. The interruption was their fault.

Hope: You're being a little defensive, don't you think?

Bo: Well, maybe a little.

Hope: I know it's not your fault.

Bo: Okay.

Hope: Okay, so? Are you going to tell me who it was and what it was all about? Do we have another bail-jumper to go after?

Bo: No, we don't. I just put out a few feelers, that's all.

Hope: About what?

Bo: That mystery substance of Maya’s. I, you know, just called in a few favors. Actually got some shaky leads on where it might have come from.

Hope: Why didn't you just call the I.S.A.?

Bo: Because they wouldn't have given me any more information than what Shane already gave you.

Hope: Do you think they know what it is?

Bo: I don know. What I do know is that somehow Tony Dimera is involved in this.

Hope: Because he was in with Maya.

Bo: Yeah, up to his neck. So I just got to go out there and see what I can come up with without the I.S.A. knowing what I'm doing.

Hope: All right, okay, when do we leave?

Bo: That's what I got to talk to you about.

Hope: You're not doing this without me.

Lucas: It's just stress. You know, isn't that why anybody drinks, because of stress and work? And I have Will. You know, he's been a little more negative than usual. He totally thinks the world is this unsafe place.

Maggie: Well, he's right, isn't he?

Lucas: Yeah, he is right. But I don't want him to be right, not at this age, not about that. I don't want him thinking that bad things are going to happen to him, and he's got to go through life worrying about that. It's just no way to live.

Maggie: No, it isn’t.

Lucas: And then there's me. I've been, um... I've been kind of out of control lately.

Maggie: Well?

Lucas: I'm having unsettling thoughts about somebody I hate.

Maggie: Unsettling thoughts?

Lucas: Yeah.

Maggie: Come on, Lucas, if something is bothering you enough to start drinking again, then you've got to open up. You've got to be honest with yourself. And with me, or I'm out of here.

Lucas: Wait, wait, wait. Don't, don’t. You're right. I'm sorry. I just, uh... I've been having romantic fantasies about someone who I know I don't want to be involved with.

Maggie: There. Was that so hard? You're having fantasies about Sami.

Lucas: Yeah. Yeah, I am. Can you believe that? I don't know why I'm having these fantasies. I don't even know why I'm talking about it. Maybe if I talk about it, I'll stop having the fantasies, and then I won't feel like I need to drink so much, because that's what this is. This is me drinking because of Sami, and this is Sami's fault once again.

Maggie: Lucas --

Lucas: It is, in a roundabout way.

Maggie: Stop it! You know better than that. No one can control your life but you, Lucas. It's no one's fault but yours that you crossed that line and took that first drink.

Lucas: You're right. You're right. I take full responsibility for drinking again. But I am not taking responsibility for these stupid fantasies! I don't know where they're coming from. I don't want them. I want them sent back. I want them gone. I mean, it's no secret. Everybody knows I hate Sami!

Maggie: I don't think that's true.

Tony: Well, don't be shy. Samantha, is there anything I can do to... make you feel better?

Tony: Oh. Let me understand. What you're saying is... a diamond bracelet to match the earrings and the necklace. Yes? Yes. I think an exquisite diamond bracelet would complement the other jewelry, but I think the pièce de résistance would be to place a larger diamond on this finger here to replace the one that Brandon Walker gave you.

Brady: Come here. What the hell is with you, Nicole? You want this guy to get away?

Nicole: No. No, I'm just blown away that someone could survive an awful crash like that and walk away from it.

Man: I don't think that's what happened. The driver's door was completely torn off. My guess? Either the driver opened it and jumped out, or the door flew open and he was thrown out.

Nicole: You mean there's no sign of him anywhere?

Man: He could have been thrown anyplace. I haven't been on many accident scenes as violent as this one.

Brady: No, this one was pretty nasty.

Man: How sure are you that he was still in the car when it went over the side?

Brady: Dead sure. There's no possible way he could have jumped out of the car.

Man: All right, let's start looking. My partner's down in the ravine. I'm gonna search the area to the west. Why don't you guys take this area down here?

Man #2: You got it.

Man: I'm gonna need you two to wait in the car so I can get a report from you after I find this guy.

Brady: I'm sorry, but I just can't wait up here. I got to help you search.

Man: Okay, but don't touch anything if you find it.

Brady: Right. All right, you know what, Nicole? I'm just gonna check these bushes down here.

Nicole: No, you're not. Not alone. I'm going with you.

Brady: Nicole, your shoes, remember?

Nicole: Oh, I don't give a damn about my shoes. I'm going with you, and that's all, so shut up and help me down the hill.

Brady: Fine. Let's go.

Man: Hey, over here. I found him.

Bo: Hope, would you relax?

Hope: Relax, relax. We just got through talking abut how this was going to be our business adventure. It's not you, it's not me, it is us. Is that not what we decided?

Bo: This has nothing to do with our business adventures. It's not like we're going out after some bail jumper or something. It's -- this is a lot of boring legwork.

Hope: I thought we were a team. You misled me --

Bo: We are a team, hope. But we both don't need to go out there and interview clerks and dock workers.

Hope: For the sake of argument, let's just say we both did go out and interview clerks and dock workers. What would we be asking? What would we be looking for?

Bo: Maya's mystery substance. Look, I'm going to check the point of origin records on the ship it came in on, ask a few questions. It'll take a couple of days -- nothing big. Hope, it's -- it's grunt work.

Hope: Well, I can grunt with the best of them.

Bo: Yeah, I know that about you. But you can also hang out with Zack. Listen, this might not be anything. It could be a big waste of time.

Hope: And if it isn't?

Bo: If it isn't, I'll make you a deal. If I come up with any leads, I'll give you a call. I'll work on this together. Okay? It's settled I go this alone, right?

Lucas: What do you mean I don't hate Sami? Of course I hate Sami. She is the bane of my existence. I hate everything about her. Everything she does drives me crazy. What, are you saying it's in my subconscious? Is that what you're saying, that that's why I'm drinking because I can't accept that? And if it is, Maggie, you're as crazy as she is.

Maggie: Oh, that's rich. Because I never said anything close to that. You're the one that said it, Lucas. That means you've been giving it a lot of thought. That means a part of you thinks it's true.

Lucas: No, it's not true. There is nothing between us. There's no attraction, there's no nothing. The only thing we have is disgust and revulsion.

Maggie: And what about these fantasies and unsettling thoughts you're having about her?

Lucas: I don't know what to do about those fantasies.

Maggie: Well, I think it's simple. You just tell her how you're feeling.

Lucas: Yeah, right. Have her laugh in my face? She'll laugh me off the map.

Maggie: Are you afraid of being laughed at? Is that what this is -- fear?

Lucas: Yeah. Yeah, maybe I am a little scared, but... I never thought of myself as a coward.

Maggie: Well, then don't be. Talk to her. And, also, I would like to know how you're feeling about returning to the meetings.

Lucas: Well, I don't know. Is there one tomorrow?

Maggie: Yes. There is.

Lucas: Then I guess I'll be going to that meeting.

Maggie: Well, good. So, what are you going to be doing about Sami?

Lucas: Maybe I should talk to her, while I still have the nerve.

Maggie: Is she home?

Lucas: No, she's out, uh, she's out with somebody, but I think I might know where they might wind up. Thank you, Maggie. I appreciate it.

Maggie: You're welcome. Aw... Lucas, do me a favor.

Lucas: Yeah.

Maggie: Next time, call me before you start tipping the glass.

Lucas: I will. I promise.

Maggie: Good night. All right.

Lucas: You got lipstick on me.

Maggie: Yeah, I know.

Tony: So, how many karats would you like this diamond to be? I can certainly afford a larger one than Brandon Walker. Oh. I'm sorry. That was insensitive of me. Please don't take it seriously. No, no. Of course not. But all joking aside about the ring, would you accept the bracelet? You know, you and I are so much alike. Much more than you're willing to admit. Well, we're both loners. Not always by choice, but, you know, we have our own individualism -- the way we think, our impulses, our actions, our thoughts... well, you know, sometimes they're misunderstood. We're determined, focused... sometimes a little self-involved... self-important. But I don't see those as negative traits, do you? I mean, I think you and I came back to Salem and we danced around each other. Honestly, I think it was because we were trying to use each other. So, if you can put that past behind you and consider the benefits of having a future with me...

Nicole: Wait.

Nicole: He sure looks dead. He is, isn't he?

Man: I can't find a pulse. Let the paramedics know where we're at. Help me turn him over?

Brady: [ Coughs ] This man looks familiar. I've seen him somewhere before. Recognize him, Nicole?

Nicole: No, I have never seen him before.

Brady: Oh, my god. This is Larry Welch. I've seen his picture in the paper.

Man: No, Larry Welch was killed during a prison transfer.

Brady: Yeah, I know he was, but this is him!

[Music plays]

Hope: Okay. Okay. You can go without me. But... on one condition.

Bo: What's that?

Hope: If you get a solid lead, you have to call me right away.

Bo: I promise.

Hope: No, actually, you have to call me every day. No, make that twice a day. Because you have to call with a progress report three to four to five times a day. Because you need to call for all those in-between times and especially right before you go to sleep, because I have to hear your voice.

Bo: I'll call just to hear your sexy voice and picture that perfect face and that luscious body.

Hope: Are you sure you want to go?

Bo: Mm-hmm.

Hope: You know what I want to do right now, Brady?

Bo: Got a pretty good idea.

Hope: Wrong.

Bo: Then what is it?

Hope: I want to do that when we get home.

Bo: Okay.

Hope: Right now I want to dance.

Bo: Okay.

Singer: When the world casts a shadow and I'm feeling

Tony: Oh, relax, Sami. I'm not anxious to hear church bells chiming, either. No, I find you... appealing... interesting... intriguing. And I think you could prove to be a valuable asset to me in the future. And vice versa. So, what do you say? May I have the pleasure of sharing another evening with you?

Man: Is he alive?

Man #2: I don't know. I couldn't find a pulse.

Nicole: He's dead.

Man #3: Give us some room, please.

Nicole: He has to be dead.

Man: This guy's still alive.

(On the next Days of Our Lives)

Rex: There has to be some way to get Philip away from her.

Mimi: Tell him the truth—that the three of you have the same mother.

Philip: Ha ha ha ha!

Lucas: There could a guy that cares about you.

Abe: Larry, who helped you? Who was it, Larry?
