[ Tires screeching ]
Liam: Oh, my god. Oh, my god.
Bill: Good, you're up.
Liam: No, I'm not. I'm not up. I'm still asleep. An alarm's gonna go off, I'm gonna wake up in my nice warm bed next to hope, and realized all this was a terrible nightmare.
Bill: No such luck, son.
Liam: Fine. Where the hell were you this morning?
Bill: I was on a jog.
Liam: You were on a jog?
Liam: After everything that happened last night, you just decided you could roll out of bed, put on your fancy shoes, and go for a jog?
Bill: Yeah, in a word. Yes. I thought it was particularly important that do my usual route this morning. The route through my neighborhood, so that in the light of day, I can make absolutely certain that there are no cameras on a certain stretch of road.
Liam: Oh. Well, were there?
Bill: Nope. None. No video footage, liam. Nothing of what happened, nothing of the accident of us driving away. Zero. Nothing to tie you to what took place. So, all you need to do now is stay quiet.
Liam: You--you keep saying that. Dad, sooner than later, I have to go to the police.
Bill: You know, liam, I don't think it's ever been more important that we have open communication. So if you have somehow romanticized prison life in your head, if it is holding some kind of a charm, some kind of lure for you, I want you say that with me. And I want you to say it now. No? Nothing?
Liam: No. No. No.
Bill: Good. Good. I've had a hell of a morning already, liam.
Liam: Yeah. Well, I'm afraid to ask somehow.
Bill: Well, don't ask, because the lesser you know, the better. But if it's the car you're worrying about, I got that covered. It's taken care of. You have nothing to worry about, so all you have to do--
Liam: Is pretend it never happened.
Liam: Do you not-- do you not understand that that is not possible? I killed someone last night. I killed a human being last night. Vinny was just minding his own business, he's walking down the street, and he's dead because of me. I'm sorry, I can't just forget that. I can't do it.
[ Knocks on door ]
Finn: Hey, hope. I, um, got your message.
Hope: Oh, hi. Thank you for meeting me.
Finn: Is this--did I catch you at a bad time?
Hope: Oh, no. No. I just-- I have a lot on my mind. Is steffy still out of town?
Finn: She and kelly took a little trip up the coast.
Hope: Oh. Why weren't you able to join them?
Finn: I couldn't get my shift covered in time, so-- but I'm gonna join them when I get a little time off.
Hope: Well, good. That's good to hear.
Finn: Yeah. Hope, what's, um, what's going on?
Hope: How were you able to do it?
Finn: Do what?
Hope: Forgive steffy.
Hope: I would love to know how you did it.
Finn: Found forgiveness?
Hope: Yeah. I'm struggling, finn. I want to do the same, but I--how? You know, I admire your strength to been able to put aside the pain and stand by steffy, but I just--I have no idea how to get to that same place with liam. Can you help me?
Liam: Dad, if I don't come forward now, like, right now, it's gonna haunt me for the rest of my life.
Bill: I can tell you with-- with certainty that whether you are walking around free or rotting behind bars, it--it will haunt you. It will haunt you either way. So my advice to you as your dad is to take what's behind door number one, which is the walking around free option.
Liam: Dad--dad--dad, all--all that means is that I'm gonna be in even more trouble when they do figure it out.
Bill: There's nothing to figure out, liam. I told you, I'm taking care of the car. I have disposed all the clothes, the wallet, the cell phone.
Liam: How--how did you disposed of these things?
Bill: It doesn't matter. All you need to know is it's been handled.
Liam: It's not--no, it hasn't been handled. It hasn't been handled just because you destroyed a wallet and didn't notice any cameras. All right. You don't know the techniques that the police use.
Liam: You don't--I'm sorry, dad. You don't know.
Bill: "Bel air hit-and-run. Identity not yet known. Apparent robbery, no leads." You see that? No leads. And there aren't gonna be any. You know why? Because of me. Welcome!
Finn: You're asking for my help, but I don't think you need my advice when it comes to liam. I think you already know what you want to do.
Hope: I just wish it were as easy as flipping a switch. You know, like boom. Here's your life back, you found forgiveness, and you can move on with your family. But... I don't know how to do that. I can't just pretend like what liam did is okay.
Finn: It wasn'T. All right. It was cruel and it was hurtful. I know that very well.
Hope: So, why did you do it? Why did you forgive steffy?
Finn: Because I love her. And I believe her remorse. She was horrified of what she did.
Hope: I know. Liam feels the same way as well.
Finn: Also, what I think made it possible for me to forgive was that--it was an isolated incident. You know, what happened, happened under some very extreme and unusual circumstances. It wasn't like it was some ongoing affair, that would have been a completely different situation. But if it helps, I don't regret it, forgiving her. Because I know that we have so much to look forward to, a beautiful future and a long beautiful life together. And I have to believe that you and liam do, too.
Liam: There's no leads right now, dad. The--the morning after. But gee whiz, what's gonna happen in a day or two when the police actually start, I don't know, investigating?
Bill: Let them have at it. No wallet, no cell phone.
Liam: Dad, they have ways of finding all of that stuff.
Bill: I've taken care of everything.
Liam: The tire tracks. What about the tire tracks? They're traceable, are they not?
Bill: To what car? I told you, it will be gone today. I am handling this.
Liam: You know what is-- you know, I still can't get over is that I passed out and your first instinct, the very first one that pops into your head is, "oh, I know, I'm gonna--I'm gonna throw liam in the car and leave vinny on the side of the road."
Bill: You left something out.
Bill: The dead part. Vinny was dead. What do you want me to do, liam? Send out invitations for a wake?
Liam: No. I wanted you to call 911 like a normal human being.
Bill: Don't be an idiot. There was no saving vinny. I was saving you. I know you feel guilty and you know how I feel about guilt. Now, you are not going to prison over an accident, you're not.
Liam: No. No. I'm not going to prison over an accident. If I go to prison, it's because I tried to cover it up. Which is why I have to come forward now, dad, while there's still the slightest chance they might take pity on me.
Bill: That won't happen. We drove off.
Liam: No, you drove off. You did that. And now, I have to figure out how to factor that piece of information into my explanation to the police, so thanks a lot.
Bill: You're not going to the police.
Liam: Dad, I cannot do this. Do you understand? I cannot do this. I cannot live this way, so, yeah, I'm going to the police.
Bill: You are not going to the police.
Brushing only reaches
25% of your mouth.
Hope: Thank you, finn. You've given me a lot to think about.
Finn: I'm not gonna tell you what do to do, but just know that there are enormous benefits both mentally and physically to letting go of pain. You're carrying tremendous weight around and it's not healthy. You know, all these inner turmoil you're feeling, all these anxiety and uncertainty? Forgiveness, it will help alleviate all that. That's the doctor's opinion.
Hope: Thank you. I mean, my mom kind of did tell me the same thing, but I do appreciate the advice of a bona fide professional.
Finn: Well, I'd like to offer you more advice, but I actually got to get going. I have a-- a compliance meeting at the hospital I have to go to.
Hope: No problem. I--I actually, have a lunch plans with liam today.
Finn: Oh, okay. So you saw him last night and you have lunch with him today, I'm seeing a pattern here. Look, it can happen, that bright, promising future that you see with liam. Not gonna be easy, but forgiveness, it's the way to it. Good luck.
Liam: You have no idea what you're asking of me, keeping this quiet. How do you expect me to live with myself?
Bill: What I expect from you, what I want from you is to toughen up and figure it out. I'm not letting you throw your life away over this and that's what will happen if you go to the police. Come on, liam. What do you think? It's gonna play out like some goofy movie. "Hey, mr. Spencer, sure do appreciate you coming in here telling us about your boo-boo. Oh, no, no. We don't think for a second that you ran that loser down, because he tried to sabotage your entire life. No, sir, you be on your way. And hey, easy on that pedal, lead foot." Huh? Is that what you think?
Liam: Obviously, not.
Liam: We say that we hit something, we don't know what, probably an animal. We looked in the rearview mirror, there was nothing there, so we assumed whatever it was, it ran off, right? And then--and then we hear the news the next morning that there was a hit-and-run on that same stretch of road. And then it occurs to us, "oh, my god. What if that hit-and-run was us?" And so being the upstanding citizens we are, we turn ourselves in.
Bill: That's a great story. Except you left the part out about vinny and your history, and the fact about all the millions of people in la, you ran him down.
Liam: Oh, well, it was dark. We didn't see him. We had no idea. Dad, if we just stick to that story--
Bill: They will lock you up.
Liam: I don't know what to do. Look, maybe you're right. Maybe you're right. But this is--this is a matter of sooner or later, but it's happening. The truth comes out. It always comes out, okay? I have to go to the police. There is no choice. I have to do it. I brought in ensure max protein, with thirty grams of protein.
Finn: Hey, dr. Ricks, you coming?
Coroner: Hey, finn. I was just about to text you. I'll have to go to the tomorrow's session instead.
Finn: Oh, you're gonna make me suffer this training all by myself?
Coroner: I'm just not comfortable leaving right now, this case I'm in the middle of.
Finn: You got a tough one?
Coroner: Let's just say the police are gonna be full of questions.
Finn: Oh, and that's life of a coroner.
Finn: I don't envy you. What are you dealing with this time?
Coroner: Pedestrian hit-and-run in bel air. Kind of sad, actually. Victim's a young guy. Whole life ahead of him, then bam.
Finn: What kind of person would just... drive away?
Coroner: I know. It's terrible.
Finn: Can't imagine what his family is going through.
Coroner: They don't even know. We don't have a name for him yet. We'll run his fingerprints. Hopefully, that'll id him.
Liam: I'll say that I was, you know, horrified to hear that--that someone was killed last night. I thought it--it's possible that I did it. I didn't realize what I had done.
Bill: That you killed the man that you hated.
Liam: I barely knew the guy.
Bill: You have motive, liam. You know you did. Are you really willing to put your hands in the faith of a jury when they know what vinny did? You think they're gonna let you off? No way. Especially if you go with that stupid animal story.
Liam: How about I just tell the truth then? How about that? It's a horrible accident. I'm sorry I did it but I did in fact kill a guy and I don't deserve to get away with that.
Bill: You are not going to prison because some lowlife scumbag stepped in front of the car. I can fix this. I already have fixed it. I--I told you, the car will be gone today. There will be nothing to link us to what happened. And if anybody asks, we left brooke's and we went straight home. That's what happened. Do you understand me? That's the way it has to be.
[ Phone beeps ]
Liam: Oh, no.
Liam: Oh, no--oh, my god. I totally forgot. I can't do this. I can't-- I can't--I can't go to lunch.
Bill: What are you talking about?
Liam: I--I--I told hope I would meet up with her for lunch today. I can't face her--
Bill: No. No. No.
Liam: --And act normal.
Bill: Absolutely, not. You're not gonna see hope. You're gonna see anybody until you can get something that resembles control of yourself. Text her and just tell her that something came up.
Liam: All right. All right. All right.
[ Phone beeps ]
Hope: Can't make it.
Liam: "No worries. Hope you're okay." Actually, hope, I'm pretty damn not okay.
Bill: Liam, listen to me.
Liam: Dad, I'm not--
Bill: I need you--I need you take a breath.
Liam: I'm not gonna-- I'm not gonna be okay until I can tell the truth. That's--that's--
Liam: --That's what--I-- I can't do this, dad.
Bill: Liam, you're not going anywhere. No. No.
Liam: Oh, god.
Bill: Liam. Liam. You're...
[ Gasping ]
[ Tires screeching ]
Liam: Oh, my god. Oh, my god.
Bill: Liam? Liam? Hear me. You got to slow down. Take some deep breaths, please.
Bill: Take it easy.
[ Gasping ] Come on, son. Slow down.
Bill: Are you listening to me?
Bill: I need you to dig deep. I need you to find the strength that I know you have inside you to put this behind you. And if you can't, lean on your dad. I'm here for you.
Liam: Okay. Okay.
Bill: I'm not gonna let you throw your life away, you're family. I'm gonna protect you. You're not going to prison. I will not allow it.
