Taylor: What? What are you doing here?
Ridge: Why don't you answer your phone? Hi.
Ridge: Is kelly okay?
Taylor: Of course she is. Why? Why wouldn't she be?
Ridge: Because I got a note saying to come see you. Pam gave it to me. It was underlined. What does that mean?
Taylor: Oh, my gosh. The hazards of leaving messages with pam. She's fine. She's healthy as a horse.
Ridge: Okay. Good. 'Cause when she had that cough, it just tore me up.
Taylor: Oh, I know. You always thought every stuffy nose was cholera.
Ridge: Well, as a parent, you've got to be careful. As a grandparent, you got to be really careful.
Taylor: Well, you better get ready for one more. Kelly's about to have a baby sister.
Carter: Okay, these are copies. You don't have to sign them.
Carter: This is the adoption agreement, the adoption order. In lieu of form 310, we're filing this affidavit, which relinquishes your rights to contact the child post-adoption.
Steffy: Oh, that's something we didn't discuss. I didn't realize we had to agree on that now.
Flo: It's all right.
Steffy: Are you sure?
[ Baby fussing on monitor ]
Flo: Yeah. I don't really think of her as mine. I never really did, to be honest.
Hope: What if she has questions?
Liam: Um... well, if she asks questions, then, don't worry. I'll answer them. But, uh, the doctor may already know.
Hope: Yeah, she probably got filled in by dr. Phillips. They both oversaw my pregnancy.
Hope: But... still... [ Sighs ] I feel really empty being here and not being pregnant.
Liam: I get it.
Dr. Lin: Hope. I'm so sorry.
Dr. Lin: Placental abruption isn't "rare," technically. But it's uncommon. Less than 1% of all pregnancies. What causes an abruption isn't well understood, but the impact can have some bearing on future pregnancies. So I'd like to examine you and do some lab work, if that's okay.
Hope: Of course.
Dr. Lin: What I want you both to understand is that you didn't do anything wrong.
Ridge: I know steffy talked about adopting, maybe. She even did the -- the -- the thing.
Taylor: Home study?
Ridge: The home study, yes.
Ridge: But I don't think she's gonna go through with it.
Taylor: Well, you're living proof that father does not always know best. Meanwhile, steffy should be bringing home the baby today.
Carter: This is steffy's information.
Flo: Why do I need that?
Steffy: It's my birth certificate, divorce decree, financial statements, a letter from the doctor saying I don't have hiv or hepatitis.
Carter: The court needs it. You don'T. But steffy wanted to offer it to you for your peace of mind.
Flo: I don't see why that's any of my business.
Steffy: Didn't I tell you?
Carter: [ Chuckles ]
Flo: Tell him what?
Steffy: How special you are. Just like your little girl.
Flo: I-I used to be a good person. Or at least I used to think I was.
Steffy: Florence, you are doing the most unselfish thing a woman is ever called on to do. I know it's not easy. But I swear to you, your daughter will be surrounded by love every day of her life. Ordinary tissues left dakota's nose sore and red.
[ Cellphone whooshes ]
Excuse me, doctor. Can you tell me where I can find the rest of the money you owe us?
Reese: Are you crazy, coming here?
You put yourself in this position.
Reese: I should have the rest of the money today.
All of it?
Reese: All of it. But if you go near my daughter again, if you come to my place of work again, I will call the cops, regardless of the consequences to me. Now, if you'll excuse me, I have patients to see.
Hope: Hey. Um, so -- so... like, is there anything for us to be concerned about?
Dr. Lin: The exam went great. I think you've been extraordinarily -- obviously "lucky" is not the right word, but there are complications, some of them serious, that can follow a placental abruption, and I see no sign of any of them. In the way of good news, I see nothing that would prevent you from conceiving again, and carrying a child to term.
Hope: I'm not prepared to think about another pregnancy.
Dr. Lin: Understandable.
Hope: Well, I'm ready to go. Are you?
Liam: Yeah. Yeah, okay.
Dr. Lin: Uh, excuse me, doctor...?
Reese: Buckingham. Oh, I'm so sorry. I'm in the wrong room, obviously.
Ridge: Why am I just hearing about this now?
Taylor: I don't know. I mean, who knew that this would work out so quickly?
Ridge: Well, that's -- the speed is what bothers me. Is steffy the one hurrying this along?
Taylor: No, I -- I wouldn't say that. But she is keeping up with the pace.
Ridge: Whose pace?
Taylor: The birth mother. Okay? She wants the baby to bond with the new mother as soon as possible. Besides, she doesn't live here. I'm sure she wants to go home and go back to work.
Ridge: Because she's running from something.
Taylor: I didn't get that sense, no. Why do you always have to think the worst of everybody?
Ridge: That way, I don't get disappointed.
Taylor: [ Sighs ] Look, if it gives you any peace, I-I know that the baby's healthy. I've looked at the ob/gyn report, the first-week vitals, the labs.
Ridge: Okay. Then -- then why -- why does something about this not feel right?
Taylor: Because you haven't seen our daughter with thatS. It's like she was meant for her. It's like she was meant to be kelly's sister.
Carter: The documents are tabbed where I need you to sign. Please read them carefully. I'm able to witness your signature since I'm not mentioned in the documents and don't profit from anything in them. We thought that might be the best arrangement for privacy. But if there's someone else you'd rather call --
Flo: Oh, no. Privacy is good.
Carter: Okay. This is the most important document, florence. The termination of parental rights. Without that, we can't do anything. You look like you have a question.
Flo: Just, wh-what happens once I sign these and put my name on them?
Carter: Well, a court will rule whether they satisfy the requirements for a legal adoption. Don't worry -- they do.
Flo: And then once the -- the court sees them, then what?
Carter: The termination of parental rights is irreversible, florence. If that concerns you, maybe we're moving too fast.
Flo: No, that's not -- I just -- I mean... what happens with all the documents afterward?
Carter: They become part of the state's records of every citizen -- like a marriage license or a birth certificate.
Flo: Well, what -- what if i don't want anyone to know my name or where to find me?
Steffy: You mean the child? When she's grown?
Carter: California adoption records are exempt from public disclosure.
Flo: So that means that no one will be able to see them?
Carter: I mean, there are -- there are exceptions, but not without your consent.
Flo: I guess that's okay, then.
Carter: So, are we ready to get back on track?
Flo: Yeah. Yeah. I-I'm sorry. I -- you seem so nice, and I know that you'll be a better mother than I would be, I just... I just need to look out for myself a little bit, you know?
There's little rest
for a single dad,
Ridge: I guess that's what happens when you live with a millennial. Just on your phone all the time.
Taylor: I'm waiting for a text.
Ridge: We're all waiting for a text.
Taylor: [ Sighs ] From steffy. As soon as she gets the adoption papers signed, I have to deliver that.
Ridge: Yeah, I was looking at that. What is it?
Taylor: Ridge, what -- oh, my gosh!
Ridge: Are you kidding me? What is this?
Taylor: [ Sighs ]
Ridge: I-is she adopting a whole orphanage? How much money is here?
Taylor: It's none of your business. $200,000.
Ridge: $200,000 f-- for one kid? Has it ever occurred to you that maybe she's being taken?
Taylor: It's my money. What was I supposed to do, haggle?
Ridge: This is your money?
Taylor: Yeah. Ridge, I don't need a financial advisor. I invited you here to give you some good news for a change.
Ridge: Okay. What?
Taylor: Do you know what she's going to name this beautiful little baby?
Taylor: It's perfect.
Ridge: [ Sighs ]
[ Emotionally ] Yeah.
Reese: I'm so overbooked, I don't know where I'm supposed to be when. Please forgive me.
Dr. Lin: Dr. Buckingham, did you say? You were the attending at the clinic when mrs. Spencer...
Reese: Yes. That terrible night. I can't get it out of my mind. I don't suppose I ever will. I can't imagine what it's been like for you these past few weeks.
Hope: Well, you were so caring. You know, you -- you tried as hard as you could, even with the odds stacked against us that night.
Reese: [ Sighs ] Sometimes life is too much like a rigged game of chance.
Hope: I-I know you're busy, but, um, we still have a couple of things that we -- we don't understand about that night, and --
Dr. Lin: Perhaps I'll just step out for a moment.
Hope: Thank you.
Dr. Lin: Come find me before you leave.
Reese: I can't promise you any new answers. Understand that. It's just, um... you know, she had passed out, and I didn't arrive until it was over, so... you're kind of the only authority we have on this.
Reese: Okay. Uh... what would you like to know?
Hope: Why we lost our little girl.
Flo: I don't really understand a lot of this.
Steffy: Yeah. It isn't my first time seeing it, but I know what you mean.
Carter: What would you like explained, florence?
Flo: Nothing. I guess sometimes you just have to take the leap, right?
Carter: Well, all the paperwork reduces the need for trust, but it doesn't eliminate it.
Flo: This is a good thing that we're doing.
Carter: Now that the paperwork is done, we will arrange for the funds to be delivered to...?
Steffy: I actually don't have the name of my mom's original contact.
Flo: I said that I would text him. Um, I should probably get the baby's -- phoebe's things together.
Steffy: Florence, I can't thank you enough for everything you're doing for me and kelly. Our little family.
Flo: I know she's gonna have a really good life with you.
Steffy: I promise. I promise. Mmph.
Reese: I wish I could tell you more. I left as full a report as i could on hope's record.
Hope: Uh, she already told me what it said, but --
Liam: But if dr. Buckingham is saying there's nothing more to add, then maybe there's nothing more to add.
Hope: No. You -- you told me to keep pushing, so I did. I kept pushing.
Reese: Hope, you did nothing wrong.
Hope: I know. That's what everyone keeps telling me. But obviously something did go wrong, and I just -- I want to know why, you know? Why did I black out? It's like I slept through the most important thing in my life, the most -- the most terrible thing.
Reese: And that's what it was -- a tragedy that I couldn't prevent.
Liam: Hey, hope --
Hope: No, no, no. I just --
Liam: Maybe -- okay.
Hope: I-I want to ask what happened next. Are you sure that she didn't cry or move? Because I felt her moving inside of me.
Reese: I'm sorry.
Hope: Nothing? There -- there was... there was nothing?
[ Sobs ] Doctor, if -- no. If I -- if I hadn't passed out, would our -- would our beth still be here?
Reese: I have a patient that I have to tend to. I'm sorry. If you only knew how much.
Hope: [ Sobs ]
Carter: Okay. Steffy, these are for you. And, florence, these are for you. And these are for me to file at the courthouse.
Steffy: Thanks for everything, carter.
Carter: I'm happy to do it. Can't wait to meet the new family member. Florence, thank you so much for all the thought and care you've put into this. You're amazing. Bye.
Steffy: Bye. So, I-I guess now we wait.
Flo: Let's not talk about money, though, please.
Steffy: Oh, yeah. No problem.
Flo: So, I-I have -- I have all of her stuff here. Um, the clothes, she's not really gonna fit in for more than like a week or so, but there's a -- there's a binky and a rattle, but she doesn't really play with anything yet. She mostly just eats and sleeps. Heh.
Steffy: I don't think I'll be doing much of that for the next couple years.
Flo: [ Exhales softly ] How old is your other daughter?
Steffy: Uh, she's a few months older than phoebe. I guess it's okay to call her that, right?
Flo: Yeah. It's a beautiful name.
Steffy: As I mentioned before, I-I had a twin. She died in a car accident years ago.
Flo: I'm so sorry. That's awful.
Steffy: Her name was phoebe. We were really close.
Flo: Well, now your other daughter will have a phoebe of her own.
[ Phoebe fussing on monitor ]
Flo: Oh! Sounds like someone wants to see you. I'll get her.
[ Toy rattles ]
Steffy: [ Chuckles ]
Flo: Here she is.
Steffy: Oh! [ Gasps ] If -- if you want to hold her and say your goodbyes, I can -- I can wait outside.
Flo: This is your new mommy. Here.
Steffy: Oh. Oh!
[ Sighs ] Heh... hi, phoebe. Hi.
[ Chuckles ]
Hope: They all say it's not my fault, but...
Liam: I know. Then maybe... maybe we just have to accept that it's never gonna make sense.
Hope: I have to let her go, don't I?
Liam: No. No, you don'T. You don'T. Not until you're ready.
Hope: One thing I do know, beth... is that mommy will always, always love you.
Steffy: Phoebe, I promise mommy will always love you.
