Katie: You must be tired of my craziness. [Sniffles]

Bill: Everybody gets afraid.

Katie: Not you.

Bill: Yes, me. What happened to you before, after Will was born... I don't want to lose you again, Katie.

Katie: You won't. I promise I won't let that happen.

Rick: I didn't realize things were so bad between you and Katie.

Brooke: Her faith in everything, especially me, is shaken.

Rick: You haven't done anything.

Brooke: She heard me say something to Bill that I never should have said.

Rick: Okay, why can't you and she realize or admit to what the real problem is? Bill is to blame. And the reason why that Aunt Katie is so insecure is because Bill keeps her that way.

[Insects chirping]

Maya: I know it's tough, but maybe he just needs time.

Nicole: That's what I wanted. Time. With Zende.

Maya: He cares so much about you. I know this feels like the end.

Nicole: Because that's what it is. Don't try to convince me that he wasn't being honest.

Maya: He was overwhelmed. Life is often harder than we think it's going to be. And maybe he'll think it's harder without you.

Zende: We shouldn't.

Sasha: Why not? Come on. You're human. I'm human. And no part of me is promised to anyone else.

Nicole: You know what I regret? You're not gonna like it. I wish that Zende and I...

Maya: Hmm.

Nicole: Is that terrible?

Maya: No. No, it's not terrible. It just might not be exactly what you need.

Nicole: I wanted my first time to be with him. And I wanted him to want that enough to wait.

Sasha: We aren't hurting anyone.

Zende: Someone could get hurt.

Sasha: You're so used to thinking it has to be a reward. For waiting and being patient, for being a good boy. But you're good enough for me already.

Brooke: This time, Katie's crisis is not her husband's doing.

Rick: How did I know you were gonna say that?

Brooke: Because it's true.

Rick: Mom, have you forgotten what Bill has done to you, to me, to my wife?

Brooke: No, honey, this is different. Bill is being stubborn but in a good way. Katie keeps testing him, and he's being patient. So far.

Rick: Meaning?

Brooke: You can only push a person so hard.

Katie: You -- you have to do something for me. You have to stop using my postpartum depression against me. That was an illness. I had hormones in my body controlling my behavior. This is about a very real external threat.

Bill: Except that it's not real.

Katie: I believe you when you tell me that you love me and that you're committed to me and our family, but... you can't ask me to forget. You can't ask me to forget what happened, to forget all those promises that were broken when you knew that Brooke wanted you. And now we both know that she still does.

[Insects chirping]

Bill: I'm going to say this as gently and lovingly as I possibly can. You are creating a crisis, Katie.

Katie: No, I'm just saying things that you don't want to hear, things that you wish weren't true.

Bill: [Sighs] This is more like after you had will than you care to admit. Substances in your body, chemicals altering your behavior, except this time self-administered.

Katie: You know... I had a couple glasses of wine while I was cooking, okay? It's not a big deal. I mean, I seem to remember what you said to me when I was concerned about your drinking. Do you remember? "Don't be so controlling. Don't try to change me. Everything's fine." I guess you don't feel that way now that the shoe's on the other foot.

Bill: You're comparing apples and oranges, and you know that.

Katie: Yeah.

Bill: All right, uh... I told Justin that I would go over to his house and watch the game with him.

Katie: Fine. Feel free.

Bill: Will's jacket in his closet?

Katie: You're taking Will with you?

Bill: Yeah. Justin likes to play uncle every now and then.

Katie: Please don't tell me that you're concerned about leaving Will alone with me.

Bill: Of course not.

Katie: I need to see you.

Brooke: It's Katie. Is everything all right?

Katie: When is it ever? Come to the house.

Sasha: What? What's wrong?

Zende: You're Nicole's friend. But you're not acting like her friend right now.

Sasha: Did I overstay my welcome?

Zende: You have a sense of what's right and what's wrong, of what's decent and what's not. You criticize Maya and Nicole. Do you see any part of this being decent?

Sasha: I'll go if you want me to. You know, I don't mind being turned down. But I do mind being made to feel like it's my fault.

Zende: I'm sorry.

Sasha: You'll be even sorrier tomorrow.

Katie: Did you run into Bill?

Brooke: No.

Katie: Hmm. You didn't see him leaving as you were coming in?

Brooke: No. You don't know where he went?

Katie: Of course, I know where he went.

Brooke: Is the nanny with Will or are you?

Katie: Why? You worried that he's not okay? Don't walk away from me when I'm talking to you. He's fine. He's with his father. You know, it's amazing. Time has done nothing to you. You're still so beautiful. And you still have a way of insulting me without even saying anything.

Nicole: I asked too much.

Maya: That's what Zende says now. He didn't say that at the beginning.

Nicole: I didn't know him as well then as I do now. He's had a pretty unconventional life. His father's situation was similar to yours. He couldn't have a biological child because, at the time, doctors were telling those with HIV that it wasn't safe, which is why they adopted Zende.

Maya: That is kind of similar.

Nicole: And I thought it would make Zende sympathetic. And he was, up to a point. [Sighs] He's such a beautiful person, Maya. He's been through things that I can't even imagine, and yet... he's still so trusting and so willing to believe that all people are good. [Voice breaking] And I miss him. Already.

[Door opens]

Sasha: I am not gonna let you do this. So used to hearing the word "No" that it's the only answer you know how to give yourself. Well, I'm not a "No" kind of girl. People are hurt. People are alone, because they don't believe that someone wants to care about them. That's not something you ever heard before, is it? That's something that nice girls don't say. Well, I don't come from nice people. I come from people who see things how they are. And I can see that you need me.

Brooke: You needed to see me?

Katie: Yeah. Stop hovering.

Brooke: I'm not. I came here because you asked me to.

Katie: That's not what I'm talking about, and you know it. You're looking for opportunities, opportunities to share a little moment with Bill and some eye contact and intimacy. And you want everyone to think that I'm paranoid, because that's how it starts. That's your history. You put the blame on the other woman, the woman who has the man that you want. That's me. You put that woman in a trap, and the harder she tries to get out of that trap, the tighter it becomes until she will do anything to be free from the hurt. I'm here to tell you that's not gonna happen this time. I'm not just gonna hand my life over to you to save my dignity. See, I will do without dignity. I will make a holy spectacle of myself, and I don't care who sees. I know what you're thinking. You're thinking, "Could this really be sweet, innocent Katie talking like this?" Yes. Yes, it is. The Katie you created.

Brooke: Are you sure it's not the Katie that whiskey created?

Katie: Oh, and here we go. Cue the lecture on how alcoholism runs in families. See, I'm not like you. I didn't throw my life away on anyone or anything that gives me pleasure.

Brooke: Oh, my God, Katie. What you think is happening isn't! Where is your husband right now? Where did he take Will? Obviously not to see me.

Katie: That's because you're the picture of innocence, right? The problem in my marriage is not you. It's me. Bill's not running to you. He's just running away from me. You know what we nonalcoholics call that, Brooke? We call it magical thinking. See, you think that if I step out of line or if I'm a bad girl or if I have a few drinks that Bill will leave me and walk away. But you are wrong, because I will never let that happen. That's not going to happen, because I will die first!

Zende: I'm not what you would call available.

Sasha: I know.

Zende: You might want things I can't give you.

Sasha: I want things no one can give me. Do you have what we need to be safe?

Brooke: You're not going to die.

Katie: [Sighs] Isn't that what you want? You keep pushing me off some cliff.

Brooke: Why don't you go hire a private detective to follow Bill and me around, and you'll see there's no secret meetings, Katie. Every time he leaves this house, he doesn't come to find me.

Katie: You would love that. That would tell Bill that I don't trust him, but I do trust him!

Brooke: Well, then why do you need all the reassurances? You're certainly not going to find it in that bottle!

Katie: You think I need this?!

[Glass shatters]

Katie: No! What I need from you is a little respect! You think you gifted me back my husband in some magnanimous moment! You think that he is yours to take and yours to give!

Brooke: No, I don't, Katie.

Katie: Just like every other woman in your life! The list is too long, and you are not gonna add me to it! I am not gonna top your list!

Brooke: [Voice breaking] I don't want to! I just want my sister back!

Katie: [Scoffs]

Brooke: You must think that I want more out of my life, but you know what? I am fine with what I have. I am at peace with that. I don't need anything else, and yes, if I have some -- some feelings that come out, if I miss somebody or something from my past, those are my feelings and it's nobody else's business, Katie! I've accepted the fact that Bill and I aren't going to be together! Why can't you?! [Sighs] Why do you do this?! You tell me to stay away, and then you tell me to come over, and all you do is you punish me! What am I supposed to do?! What -- what do you want from me?!

Katie: [Sniffles]

Brooke: All I want to do is love you.

Katie: [Sobbing] How could you? How could you love me? How could anyone love me? [Sobs]

Brooke: God, Katie.

Katie: I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I'm so sorry.

Brooke: I'm just -- I get so afraid for you.

Katie: I am so... [Sniffles] You're right. You're right. I-I-I -- [Sniffles] I have to stop doing this. I-I have to. I have to -- I have to stop. I'm going to stop. I'm not -- I'm not gonna drink anymore.

Brooke: Oh, God. Thank God.

Katie: My -- my husband and -- and my child, they need me.

Brooke: Yes, they do. They do.

Katie: And -- [Sniffles] And we don't have to talk about this ever again, right?

Brooke: No.

Katie: As long as you understand that they -- they're my world. [Sighs, sniffles] Okay. [Sniffles] I'm good. I'm good. You can go. You -- you should go before Bill gets here.

Brooke: Okay. [Sniffles]

Katie: Yeah. If you talk to him...

Brooke: No, I-I won't.

Katie: But if you do, just... you can tell him it's okay to come home.

[Door opens]

Katie: [Sighs]

[Door closes]

Katie: [Sobbing] [Sighs] [Sobbing quietly]
