Dr. Caspary: Are you positive this is something you want to know?
Bridget: Yes. Otherwise, I'll always wonder. What--uh, I'm-- unless...
Jackie: We need to know.
Dr. Caspary: Bridget, you and I are both aware of the tough road you're facing to even carry this child to term. Assuming you do, assuming you have a healthy, happy baby to love, after all the pain and loss you've suffered, I guarantee when you hold your baby for the first time, its paternity won't matter to you.
Bridget: Does that mean--
Dr. Caspary: It doesn't mean anything. I just want to make sure you're really ready for this.
Bridget: I can handle it. I-I'm ready to know. Is--is the father... is it Nick or Owen?
Nick: You sure look at that phone a lot.
Owen: Yeah, I'm sorry. I guess it's just kind of one of those habits.
Nick: Well, if you're waiting to hear from my mother, why don't you give her a call?
Owen: I know she's with Bridget. I don't want to disturb her.
Aggie: Sorry. I was looking for Jackie.
Nick: Oh, she's not here, but I'm glad that you are. You got a second?
Aggie: Yeah, sure.
Aggie: What's-- what's going on?
Nick: Something I would like to talk to you about.
Aggie: Okay, that sounds serious. Is there something wrong with my work?
Nick: No, no, no, my gosh. No, very, very pleased with your work. Very pleased.
Aggie: You're sure?
Aggie: Because when Stephanie left, I didn't know exactly where I was gonna fit in, but I think that I've been stepping up.
Nick: No, no. Everything's great. Sorry to make you nervous. No, this is, um, something more on a personal matter I wanted to talk to you about.
Owen: Hey, listen, I will, um, I'll just step outside for a minute and--
Nick: No, no, no, Owen. You're very much a part of this. So are you. It's a family matter, and I want to make sure that you're included.
Aggie: Is there something wrong?
Nick: No, no, actually, there's nothing wrong. But, uh, Bridget and I, we have a little bit of news. (Chuckles) A bit of a surprise. We're very excited about it. Um... we're gonna have a baby.
Aggie: Wait, what? Bridget's pregnant?
Nick: Well, I know it's a bit of a shock. (Chuckles) It was for us, too.
Aggie: I'll bet.
Nick: And maybe we shouldn't be talking about it right now. A little early, but we've only told my mother and Owen.
Aggie: Oh, Owen. How do you feel about it? I mean, that's some really big news, huh?
Owen: Yeah, are you kidding me? I'm--I'm super happy for them.
Nick: Anyway, I wanted you to know about this, given everything we've been through... you and Bridget and I. And I certainly hope that you will share in this joy with us.
Dr. Caspary: The results are pretty straightforward, though I did ask the lab to double-check to make sure. And, Bridget, I'll give you a copy of everything so that you can see for yourself.
Bridget: Say it's Nick. It's Nick's baby. It's Nick's.
Dr. Caspary: Your husband is not the father.
Jackie: This can't be happening.
Dr. Caspary: I'm sorry.
Jackie: No, no, no. Just run the test again. If there's a margin of error, then you--
Dr. Caspary: There's no mistake. I meant what I said. This might seem like an insurmountable problem right now, but you won't love this child any differently. I promise you. You can talk to me any time...
Dr. Caspary: Day or night. Or, if you prefer, I can hook you up with someone professional. I'm very sorry, Bridget. If there's anything I can do, you don't hesitate to call, hmm? Okay.
Aggie: That's wonderful news. I am so happy. This is terrific.
Nick: Thank you.
Aggie: It's--it's amazing. But, you know, I'm just a little confused, because the whole reason you hired me in the first place was, you know, to be your surrogate.
Nick: No, no, no. It's risky business. Anything connected to pregnancy with Bridget is complicated. But, um, well, we're just taking it day by day, right? This wasn't planned. (Chuckles) It's sort of like fate intervened and took the decision out of our hands.
Aggie: Fate, huh?
Nick: Yeah, you know, they say accidents happen for a reason, and, well, so far, so good, but she's over at the hospital right now having some tests run to make sure everything's okay with the baby.
Owen: Did she say that she was gonna call you after the appointment, or...
Nick: No, she said she needed to get some rest. They wanted to keep her there for a while. I'm not quite sure how long, so I got some sales reports here I should do, or maybe I should go over and wait and take her home. What do you think?
Owen: Well, I think that, uh, I think that this one's gonna work out.
Nick: I think you're right. I'm gonna be a father again. (Laughs)
Bridget: Jackie, I am so sorry.
Bridget: Everything changes now.
Bridget: I don't think Nick will be able to forgive me.
Jackie: Probably not.
Bridget: He'll leave me. I'll be alone, without a husband.
Jackie: And then what? You'll take mine?
Bridget: No! God, no, Jackie.
Jackie: You will. Owen will want to be a daddy.
Bridget: Oh, God, I have ruined everything.
Jackie: Yes. Yes, you have.
Bridget: You know, it doesn't probably mean that much to you right now, but I love you, Jackie...
Bridget: So much. I respect you more than... well, just about more than anyone I've ever met.
Bridget: To know that I've hurt you just kills me.
Bridget: It kills me. God, I would do absolutely anything to make this up to you. I hate what I've done. I hate it, and I'm so sorry. I wish I could take it back.
Jackie: You want to make this up to me? Then you will do exactly as I tell you.
Aggie: So what kind of tests is Bridget having done?
Nick: Uh, these, uh, C.V.S. tests-- chromosomal abnormalities. It's just a precaution.
Aggie: Well, I think you should--should be there.
Nick: She didn't want me to go with her.
Aggie: Mm, I'm pretty sure she'd want you there. I think you should just go and surprise her.
Nick: No, no. She doesn't want me there holding her hand, which is fine with me, but I will have a front row seat to the ultrasound. I love those.
Aggie: Was it me, Nick, or did Owen seem kind of out of it just now?
Nick: Yeah, I noticed that, too. It's probably my fault.
Nick: Well, all the talk about Bridget having the baby-- it might be a problem for him.
Aggie: What do you mean?
Nick: Because Owen wants to have children so badly.
Nick: Oh, yeah. Yeah, big-time.
Aggie: I had no idea.
Nick: Oh, no. That's why Bridget and I originally stared thinking about a surrogate, because Owen and my mother, you know, they were thinking of having a family together.
Aggie: Jackie wasn't into it?
Nick: No, no, I... I think she's grown accustom to her lifestyle, which is sleep and money and cocktails and adult conversation, and I don't think a child fit in.
Nick: Which is probably too bad. Owen would make a great father.
(Cell phone rings)
Owen: Hey, it's me. I can't stand waiting anymore. Did you get the results?
Bridget: Uh, meet me at my place, and I'll explain everything.
Owen: So you know? You know who the father is?
Bridget: Um, I'll, uh, I'll tell you when you... when you get to my house. Um, I'll call you to let you know it's safe for you to come by, okay?
(Phone hangs up)
Jackie: That was my husband.
Bridget: Yes, it was. Nick is working tonight, late. I'll call Owen when I get home and explain everything, and then I will tell Nick. Everyone's gonna know tonight. I'm gonna tell everyone the truth.
Jackie: The truth?
Bridget: Yes. No more secrets. No more lies. You don't have to tell me, Jackie. I know what needs to be done. I'm gonna find a way to be honest with Nick. I have to tell my husband that I'm pregnant with Owen's child.
Jackie: No. No. You're not going to do that. This is Nick's child.
Bridget: I don't understand.
Jackie: Nicky is the father of this baby. Do you understand me?
Bridget: You're not really making much sense. No.
Jackie: Yes, yes, yes. I'm making perfect sense. My son finally has the life I've always wanted for him. He's the man that I always dreamt that he could be. He is finally happy, and I'm not gonna let you ruin that. Nicky is the father of this baby, not Owen. Am I clear?
Jackie: Am I clear?!
Bridget: I can't lie anymore. I can't do it. It's just eating me up inside. I canít.
Jackie: Well, I donít... (quietly) care about that.
Bridget: Please, please, please, I will do anything else. Don't ask me to do this. I can't live this way anymore. I can't do it.
Jackie: (Normal voice) Do you even comprehend what would happen if the truth comes out? Do you?
Bridget: (Breathing heavily)
Jackie: You will lose Nick. I will lose Owen. We will lose everything. Everything. You betrayed me, Bridget. Well, now you're gonna fix it.
Aggie: Well, I've taken up enough of your time.
Nick: Hey, hey, hey, hey.
Nick: You okay with all of this?
Aggie: I--don't be silly. Of course. Yeah.
Nick: 'Cause, you know, if circumstances were different, then...
Aggie: I want you and Bridget to have a baby together. That's why I came into your lives. If that's happening for you now, I couldn't be more pleased. All I want is your happiness. You deserve it.
Jackie: I just hope that the day doesn't come when you say, "I've missed my chance to be a father."
Owen: Look it, I missed my chance to be a rock star. I missed my chance to be a professional surfer.
Owen: I could have done a thousand other things that I didn't do. You're born with a head full of dreams and only one life, so you got to choose, and I choose you.
Jackie: You know how much Owen wants to be a father. If he found out the truth, he'd want to be with you.
Bridget: You have no reason to feel that way.
Jackie: He's not a part-time father. He wouldn't settle for seeing his child every other weekend. He'd leave me. He'd pursue you.
Bridget: You are not hearing me. Owen is not interested in me. I am not interested in him. You have nothing to worry about.
Bridget: I would be the one that was alone.
Jackie: This child may not even be born.
Bridget: You don't have to say that.
Jackie: You're really willing to risk losing both of our marriages on the chance that you may deliver this child?
Bridget: Don't you think that Owen has a right to know? And Nick? I can't lie to him anymore. It's just not right.
Jackie: Yeah? Well, there's a lot not right here, Bridget. Sometimes a woman has to keep a secret, like I did for all those years keeping the truth about Nick's real father from him, and now you are going to do exactly the same.
Bridget: (Sniffles) The truth came out eventually.
Jackie: Not this time... unless you want it to, unless there's something that you're not telling me. Are you in love with my husband?
Bridget: No. (Sobbing) No, Jackie, no. My God, it was just one awful moment. It was just him, and it was comfort. I... (inhales sharply) wish I could take it back. If I could do anything, I would erase it.
Jackie: Well, life does not work that way.
Jackie: Sometimes, we have to just make the best of the hand that we are dealt, and in this case, it is a bloody lousy one. This wasn't some foolish little indiscretion, Bridget.
Bridget: I can't explain it. I really canít. I just lost my mind. I was out of control. And I'm so sorry. It just happened.
Jackie: Yeah, well, that doesn't excuse what you did.
Bridget: I know it's inexcusable. I know that. (Sighs) God, I donít... I don't even know that I'm capable of doing this, keeping a secret.
Jackie: You have to. You couldn't possibly want to hurt Nick that much, not if you truly love him. Unless, of course, you're just covering up some inner desire for Owen.
Bridget: I'm not.
Jackie: And he's given you absolutely no indication that he has feelings for you?
Jackie: (Whispers) Then you'll do as I ask. (Normal voice) And I want to be here when you tell Owen that Nick is the father, because I have to be sure.
Jackie: I'm going to be here. I-I'll be hiding, of course. He won't know that I'm here, but I want to see his reaction. I want to know how he feels about you, and I want to know how he feels about me, and then I'll know if my marriage is worth fighting for.
Bridget: Jackie, what are you asking me to do?
Jackie: You will lie for me. You will lie for our marriages, because I am not willing to lose my husband and my son's sanity because of you.
Jackie: Whose child is it?
Bridget: (Whispers) It's Nickís.
Jackie: Again. Mean it.
Bridget: It's Nick's baby. It's Nickís.
Jackie: (Sighs) That's right. It's Nickís. It's not Owen's. It's Nickís. You believe it. You live it. And you take this secret to your grave.
