Stephanie: Brooke, please believe me. I meant your mother no harm. I had no idea that that lace meant that much to her. I mean, if I had known, I-- look, I just--I just wanted to walk away. I did not want to get into an argument with her.
Brooke: She's dead, Stephanie.
Stephanie: Yes, and--and as tragic and heartbreaking as that is, it's not because of me. It's not because of me. (Sighs)
Katie: (Inhales sharply) (sighs)
Bill: I still say we should leave these off till tomorrow. It would be good for both of us.
Katie: (Sighs) I just can't shake this feeling.
Bill: (Sighs) You really think something's wrong?
Katie: Yeah, I can feel it in my heart. I've got three messages. (Sniffles)
(Cell phone rings)
Katie: Oh, it's Donna.
Bill: Answer it.
Katie: Hey, what's goin' on?
Donna: Katie... honey, uh... something terrible has happened.
Marcus: I'm just saying you lucked out with your name, that's all I'm saying.
Marcus: I mean, come on. "Hope for the Future"? I mean, think about it. Now you could have been named Prudence, and this campaign would have never happened.
Hope: This is true. It could be worse, though. I could have been named Chastity, and then you'd have "Chastity for the Future."
Marcus: (Laughs) Like, for when you're feeling modest, and you need to let it show.
Hope: Exactly. You have skirts that flow all the way to floor and blouses that button all the way up. (Laughs)
Marcus: (Laughs) Hey. Wait. Wait, wait. That's a good idea. Let's bring that up at the meeting tomorrow.
Hope: Oh, my gosh. Can we please?
Marcus: Yes, we're definitely gonna--
Hope: Oh, it'd be perfect. The straight-faced... Rick.
Marcus: What's up, man? You okay?
Rick: I don't think we're having this meeting tomorrow.
Hope: Why? What happened? You--you look...
Rick: Something's happened. Grandma died.
Rick: I know. Hope, honey, I'm so sorry. Come here.
Marcus: No. I don't--I don't understand. Now look, I know that Grandma had gotten worse, but I didn't think it was that bad.
Rick: It--Marcus, it wasn't Alzheimerís, or at least not directly. They found her in Dad's pool. She drowned.
Brooke: Thank you. Ciao.
Donna: Ridge's hotel?
Brooke: He's not picking up his cell. I think he's still on the flight. Did you talk to Katie?
Donna: She's on her way.
Brooke: Good. I spoke with Rick, and he's gonna tell Marcus and Hope. They're all still at work right now. I don't know how I'm gonna break the news to R.J.
Stephen: When does he get back from his school trip?
Brooke: Not till the weekend.
Eric: Do you want me to bring him home from school? Is there a teacher I could call?
Brooke: I don't know. (Sighs) I-I don't know, Eric. I don't know if I should tell him right now or if I should wait. I mean, I-I think it's something that I need to talk with Ridge about.
Brooke: (Sighs) Oh, God. This is all so overwhelming. Did you talk to Bridget?
Eric: I left her a message to call here.
Katie: What happened? What happened? Where is she?
Stephen: Honey, we don't know. We're still putting the pieces together.
Stephanie: Katie, I'm so sorry for your loss.
Donna: You want to know what happened? You're looking at her.
Katie: You did this?!
Donna: She killed our mother.
Katie: Oh, God.
Stephanie: No, Katie, I just happened to be with your mother before the accident.
Donna: No. No. Eric--Eric kicked her out, and she was mad as hell.
Donna: She--she lured Mom down to the pool area.
Stephanie: No, I followed your mother down to make sure she was safe.
Donna: And she took the lace from her hands and--and threw it into the water.
Katie: Oh, my God.
Stephanie: No, I didn't throw anything into the water.
Donna: Yes, Stephanie, you killed her. You killed our mother. You--you're gonna go to jail.
Donna: I'm gonna see to it, Stephanie. We're all gonna see to it, because you--you killed our mother.
Marcus: Well, why was she in the pool? I thought Grandma was scared of the water now.
Rick: Uh, look, I don't know all the details, just that Donna found her and it was too late to revive her.
Marcus: (Sighs) Oh, my poor mom. I can't imagine.
Hope: Well, I don't understand why she was alone in the first place. I mean, she shouldn't have been by herself, not one minute. Someone should have been with her. I mean, isn't that the whole point of why they moved back to L.A.?
Oliver: What's up? What's--what's going on?
Hope: My grandma died today.
Stephanie: Katie, I'm so sorry for what's happened to your mother, but I am not responsible for her death.
Donna: Oh, you hated her. I mean, you probably fantasized about this day for years.
Eric: Donna, please. We--be reasonable here.
Donna: No. No. We have to press charges.
Bill: Say the word, I'll call my attorneys.
Stephanie: Oh, come on!
Stephen: Thank you, Bill, but we're not gonna jump to any decisions right now.
Katie: She was scared of the water. She had forgotten how to swim. We all knew that.
Stephanie: Well, I certainly didnít. I would never have left her.
Donna: You live here, Stephanie. And certainly you've heard us talk about that. My God, you hate us. You hate us. You've tried to kill Brooke more than once. And now my mother is dead. She's dead. And I'm just supposed to believe it's an accident?
Stephanie: I had no reason to harm your mother. If I was gonna kill anybody, it'd be you or your nutty sister.
Stephanie: I would never harm your mother.
Rick: So you're sure you can stay? I don't want to leave Hope alone right now.
Oliver: Yeah, of course.
Rick: Okay, thank you. All right, I'm gonna let you know what we find out, okay?
Hope: Yeah, um, I'll be-- I'll be over in... (Sniffles) a little while, guys. I just want to pull myself together, okay?
Oliver: I'm sorry.
Hope: I mean, I knew that we were losing her, you know, but not like this.
Oliver: She had Alzheimerís, right?
Hope: She was so afraid of what she was going to turn into. (Sniffles) You know, she hid it from the family when she found out. It's like, you know, she didn't want us to see her when it got bad, you know? And she thought she'd be a-a burden or it would be embarrassing, you know, when her memory went away, and she did-- she did forget. Last time I saw her, she had no idea who I was-- none--and now I just feel so guilty.
Oliver: Guilty? Hope, you can't feel that way.
Hope: I didn't spend any time with her at the end-- none. You know, I didn't realize... (Sniffles) I didn't--I know, I just-- I wish I could have seen her one more time, well, when she knew who I was, you know? Or--or even if she didn't, it didn't matter, you know? I just--I should have been there more, and I should have called more. (Sniffles) I just thought we had more time, you know? I didn't know. I didn't know. (Sobs)
Eric: Stephanie, calm down. You're only making things worse.
Stephanie: I'm simply making a point. I had no reason to hurt their mother.
Eric: I know.
Donna: Your reason was to hurt us.
Stephanie: Well, I'm sorry if you believe that. Honestly, I am. Maybe if you had been there and seen how agitated your mother got all on her own, you could understand what happened.
Stephen: Self-defense? Is that where you're taking this?
Donna: No juror would believe that a woman as sick what-- as my mother with Alzheimerís would be a threat to you.
Stephanie: Okay, enough, please! Donna, I--obviously, you're...
Stephanie: You're out of your mind with grief. I'm sorry.
Donna: My mother attacked you? Is that what you're saying? Yeah, right. My mother attacked you?
Stephanie: Look, this is a God-awful situation, and I am so sorry for your loss, but I am not responsible for your mother's death.
Eric: Look, we've had enough misfortune and pain today. Let's not make it worse by accusing an innocent woman of murder here.
Donna: Innocent? What are you--what are you-- what are you saying?
Eric: Donna. Donna, you're--you're--you're grieving. You're in pain. You're not thinking clearly.
Donna: You're defending her?
Eric: I want you to-- I want you to understand.
Donna: (Scoffs) No, Eric, donít. Oh, my God. My mother's dead. She's dead.
Eric: No. Donít. Donít.
Donna: Don't! No!
Eric: All right, now. Come here. Come here. Come here.
Eric: Stop. Stop. Stop. Stop.
Donna: She killed my mother.
Eric: Stop it, Donna.
Donna: She killed her, Eric. She killed her.
Eric: Shh. Stop it.
Donna: (Sobbing) No!
Oliver: I'm here for you, Hope. Anything you need, anything you want, just let me know.
Hope: Just be with me right now. That's all I need from you, okay? Just--just be with me.
Oliver: That I can do.
Stephanie: (Sighs) (Sighs) Beth, Beth, wait a minute.
Beth: Stay away from me.
Stephanie: Wait a minute. Wait. Wait. I-I... don't be frightened, please. Okay? I-I-I won't touch you. I won't touch you. I-I just want to take you back up to the house.
Stephanie: Yeah, I want to make sure that you're safe. Please?
Beth: (Scoffs) You're a liar.
Beth: You always have been. You hate us, and you think you can get away with anything.
Beth: And for the most part, you have.
Stephanie: Look, just calm down, all right, please?
Beth: But--but no. Not this time. You've ruined so many things, but not this time.
Stephanie: Okay, Beth, this is such ancient history. I can see how confused you are. And you're just--
Beth: No. No. You were a hateful young woman, and now
you are a bitter old one! You have won so many times, but I know you, Stephanie, and I will not let you win this time. I will not let you win! I will not--stop it! Stop it!
Stephanie: All right, Beth!
(Knock on door)
Stephanie: (Whispers) Oh, brother.
Brooke: May I?
Brooke: Well... (Sighs) that's true, at least-- Eric asked you to move out?
Stephanie: Yes, he did. I'm terribly sorry about your mother. I... I'm really sorry. You know, your sister is, um, well, the things that she said tonight were way out of line. I realize that this a terrible shock, but Donna is being irrational. I mean, you see that, don't you? Eric does. You do see it, don't you?
Donna: (Screams) Mom! Mom! Oh, my God. (Gasps) (Sobs) Mom! One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten.
Donna: Daddy! Daddy, help me!
Stephen: Honey, honey what--
Donna: 27, 28, 29, 30. Breathe! Breathe!
Eric: We need paramedics up here right away.
Stephen: Beth? Honey?
Brooke: Mom? Mom?!
Donna: Breathe. Breathe. Breathe. Breathe. Breathe.
Stephen: Did you call?
Eric: Yeah, they're coming. They're on their way.
Stephen: How could this happen?
Donna: I don't know, Daddy. I don't know. I don't know.
Stephen: Beth, honey!
Donna: God! Breathe! Breathe! Breathe! (Sobs)
Donna: I'm pressing charges.
Eric: Donna, listen.
Donna: Where's Bill? I-I-I need to go. I need to get...
Eric: No, no, no.
Donna: The number of the--the lawyer.
Eric: No, no. You're not gonna call a lawyer.
Donna: Then I-I have to call the police.
Eric: No! You don't need to call the police. They've been here. They're already been here. They've asked all their questions.
Eric: Donna... Donna, your mother had Alzheimerís. She wandered away.
Eric: She was alone. She ended up down by the pool, and she--she fell.
Eric: And now she's gone. But it's not Stephanieís fault.
Donna: What? It sounds-- it sounds like you almost believe that.
Eric: I do believe that. You can't honestly-- you can't honestly believe that I would think that Stephanie-- that Stephanieís a murderer.
Donna: Eric, I've--I've seen what she's capable of. I...
Donna: Look, honey, I-I-I know that you don't want to believe that, but... (Sighs) but my mother's dead now. Sheís... I'm looking for some justice. I would think that my husband would stand by my side. I need--I need you to stand by my side. I need you-- I need you to say it. I need you say that Stephanie is responsible. Say it. Say it.
Eric: No, Donna. I canít. I'm sorry, but I canít.
Donna: (Inhales sharply) Okay. Okay.
Eric: Donna? Donna, what are you doing?
Donna: I'm leaving.
Eric: Donna, no. Donna, listen, what are you doing?
Eric: Listen. Listen to me. Look, you are--you're grieving, and you're in shock. This is a terrible, terrible tragedy. But I am your husband.
Eric: And I want to stand by you through this. I want you to stay here with me.
Donna: J-J-J-Just--just-- just--no.
Eric: No, no, no.
Donna: Just let-- just let me go.
Eric: Come here. Come here, Donna.
Donna: Let me go. (Sobs)
Eric: Come here. Come here. You stay right here. You stay with me.
Donna: I know. I'm--I'm just scared. Just like-- (Sobbing) (Whispers) I have to go.
Donna: (Sighs) (Normal voice) I will always love you.
Stephanie: Thank you... for believing me.
Eric: Of course. Of course I believe you.
Stephanie: I just wanted to tell you that I appreciated it, and I appreciated the fact that you stood up and spoke for me. Thank you. (Sighs) Well, I'm--I'm packed. I'm going. I don't want to cause another moment of grief for anyone else in this house. But I'm concerned, um, about Donna. I don't know where she's going with this, Eric. So if you could, please, try to make her understand it was an accident.
Eric: Stephanie, nothing that happened here in this house today is your responsibility. I will not--I will not have you held responsible for that. I wonít. I promise.
Stephanie: Thanks. Thank you. (Sighs)
