Jackie: You are disappointed.

Owen: I'm just--I'm confused. I mean, I thought that we felt the same way about this.

Jackie: I just can't do it. I-I can't go back. I-I just-- I can't raise another child.

Nick: All right, let's-- let's all take a deep breath and discuss this.

Stephanie: No! It's not negotiable, Nick. I'm leaving the company.

Nick: Is it maybe 'cause I called you arrogant? We could--

Stephanie: No, no, no. You were absolutely right. I was so rude... (Chuckles) and arrogant the other day, and--and I-I'm--I'm embarrassed by that.

Whip: Well, we forgive you, Stephanie. But you don't have to fire yourself.

Stephanie: Whip, it's so much more than that.

Whip: Oh, what-- what more could it be? Stephanie, why would you leave a job that gives you so much fulfillment?

Stephanie: It's...

Pam: It--it's time.

Stephanie: It's time. That's all I wanna say.

Nick: This doesn't make sense. A week ago, you were working through the night. We couldn't get you to go home.

Whip: Exactly.

Stephanie: I... I guess I was overcompensating. (Chuckles)

Nick: Overcompensating for what?

Stephanie: For something I didn't wanna face.

Whip: And what's that?

Stephanie: I'm past my prime.

Whip: (Chuckles) Oh, boy.

Nick: You gotta be kidding me. You're just hitting your stride.

Whip: The big joke around here is that none of us can keep up with you.

Stephanie: Well, thank you very much. It's a lovely compliment, but I've accomplished what I set out to accomplish here, and--God, I hate good-byes. And--l-l-let's just say good luck, okay? And Pam, walk me down to the car, please. And keep Pam on, please. She's a wonderful worker.

Pam: Oh, Steph.

Whip: I'm gonna miss you, Stephanie.

Whip: You won't even take my hand?

Pam: No, no, she--she's a hugger, Whip, not a shaker. Hugger.

Stephanie: (Chuckles)

Pam: (Chuckles)

Stephanie: Thanks, Whip, for everything.

Whip: Mm-hmm.

Stephanie: You know, I just adore all of you. I ho--I hope you do know that. Nick, you threw me a lifeline when I needed it the most, and I will never forget that.

Pam: (Sighs)

Stephanie: (Sighs)

Thomas: Yes, I saw her. She and I had a late lunch.

Taylor: Well, I hope you were able to talk some sense into your sister.

Thomas: Mom, I tried, but it's Steffy. Nobody tells her what to do.

Taylor: (Sighs) She could have been killed on that boat.

Thomas: Right. But she wasnít. Owen saved her. And now he's her hero.

Taylor: Well, he's also married.

Thomas: Which is why I've gotta believe nothing's gonna come of this. Steffy likes the bad boys, but she isn't gonna let herself go after some married guy.

Taylor: Well, I hope I've raised her better than that.

Thomas: Of course you have. She's not a home wrecker, Mom.

Taylor: That's true, but... (Sighs)

Thomas: What?

Taylor: I don't know. I just get this feeling that Steffy is-- is thinking that Owen's marriage is going to fall apart.

(Indistinct conversations)

Steffy: She better be making you happy, Owen.

Owen: Listen, Jackie, you're not gonna be alone. You're gonna have me. We're gonna be able to do this together. It's gonna be amazing, and it's gonna be fun and--

Jackie: Fun? (Chuckles) Caring for a baby is a lot more than fun. It's a huge responsibility.

Owen: I know that.

Jackie: (Sighs)

Owen: But when you have two people who are ready to accept that responsibility, we can-

Jackie: Owen, please. Owen. That is just it. I am not ready. I wish I could tell you otherwise, because I hate to disappoint you, but... I have to be honest. Our life is wonderful, and we are just getting started. The very thought of caring for a child I-is... is...

Jackie: I'm sorry, darling.

Owen: I can't accept this, Jackie. I canít.

Jackie: You can't accept that I don't want a baby?

Owen: Look, I know that we've been through a lot lately. And that's probably what you're worried about. But sunshine, listen to me. We are past that, really.

Jackie: Really?

Owen: Yes. I mean, this isn't gonna give us any time to even have to think about all of our petty little problems.

Jackie: (Chuckles) No, because there'll be diapers to change and midnight feedings, and I j--

Owen: Mm-hmm. That is right. Listen, it's gonna be good for us. It's gonna be really good for us.

Jackie: I'm not so sure it'll be good for me.

Owen: I'll do all the heavy lifting. How's that? I'll do all the heavy lifting. If he wakes up in the middle of the night, I will make sure that you don't even hear him or--or her.

Jackie: Really?

Owen: Yeah.

Jackie: How are you gonna accomplish that? (Chuckles)

Owen: Listen to me. The point is...

Jackie: (Sighs)

Owen: That with me by your side, this is not gonna be nearly as difficult as you think it's gonna be.

Jackie: Owen, please-- please listen to me. If-- if we were to have a baby, I wouldn't want you to do all the heavy lifting. I'd want it to be a shared experience, like everything else in our lives. I'm just not ready to share that experience. When I think of the next few years, I-I just don't see a baby in the picture. I see you, and I see me, and I see this, oh, brilliant life-- you and me. Please, darling, don't get your hopes up on this, please.

Whip: Wow. I cannot believe what I just heard.

Nick: It's bizarre, completely bizarre.

Whip: What do you make of it?

Nick: I don't know. But I am gonna find out.

Taylor: She told you the exact same thing, didn't she?

Thomas: As much as I know she's attracted to Owen, she really wants his marriage to work because she knows it's what he wants.

Taylor: No, she's caught right in the middle, and that's what has me worried.

Thomas: (Sighs) I know. But Mom, after everything Steffy went through with Rick, she's not gonna let herself get all involved with some married man.

Taylor: Well, I would hope not.

Thomas: Okay, look, I told the guys I'd meet 'em at a club in Hollywood.

Taylor: Okay. All right. Just leave me here to work. It's all good.

Thomas: I'll call if I'm gonna be late.

Taylor: Okay.

Thomas: And hey, don't worry about Steffy. She's a big girl.

Pam: Oh.

Stephanie: Oh.

Thomas: Oh, Grandma.

Pam: Hi, Thomas.

Stephanie: Hi, Tom.

Thomas: Hey.

Pam: Is your mom around?

Thomas: Yep, right here.

Pam: Oh, there you are. Hi, Taylor.

Taylor: Hi. Hi. What's the matter?

Stephanie: Well, what kind of a greeting is that?

Taylor: It's the kind of greeting you get whenever I sense that something's going on and you don't wanna tell me about it.

Stephanie: (Sighs)

Pam: Well, you'd be right. There is.

Taylor: What? Is it--is it something physical?

Stephanie: No, not this time. I'm--I just-- I'm not going to go back and--and work at Jackie M.

Taylor: Oh, no. Wh--

(Indistinct conversations)

Owen: Hey.

Steffy: Hey. Want some coffee?

Owen: I could use something a lot stronger than coffee.

Steffy: Oh, I hope I didn't get you into trouble. You know, I should never have taken you out on the boat.

Owen: Well, you were on a mission.

Steffy: Yeah, I don't know what I was thinking. What's the matter?

Owen: Nothing. I just, uh... had a pretty deep talk with my wife.

Steffy: Not about me, I hope.

Owen: No, no. Something else. Something I've always dreamed of. Something I realize I may never have.

(Knock on door)

Jackie: Oh, Nicky. Come in.

Nick: Busy?

Jackie: No, I'm not busy. Please. Wha--what is it?

Nick: We have a problem... with Stephanie.

Steffy: Jackie doesn't want to have a child?

Owen: When she thinks about her future, she doesn't see a baby in it. I can sort of understand. I mean, that is a lot to ask.

Steffy: But you've mentioned a couple of times how much you want to be a dad.

Owen: I just know that I would be a terrific father.

Steffy: I'm sure you would be.

Owen: But I guess I'm just gonna have to deal with it. I mean, at this point in her life, who can blame her for not wanting to take on such a huge commitment?

Steffy: Uh, so you're okay with it?

Owen: Look, Jackie is... she's different from me. I knew that going into it, but I love her. And we're gonna figure this out.

Steffy: Owen, you are a very special man. And Jackie is incredibly fortunate to have you.

Owen: Well, I do try to remind her of that as much as I can.

Jackie: (Scoffs) Oh, how could Stephanie leave? I mean, she's been so happy at the company.

Nick: We did everything we could to convince her to stay.

Jackie: She didn't give you an explanation?

Nick: She said it's time to go.

Jackie: (Sighs) Well, that certainly wasn't how she was feeling a week or so ago. She was singing her own praises. It was, frankly, quite annoying.

Nick: She apologized about that, too. She admitted she was wrong. Something's going on with this old broad, and I cannot figure out what it is.

Jackie: I think maybe we should be worried about her.

Taylor: Why? Why, Stephanie? Why would you leave a job that you--you love so much, that means so much to you?

Pam: Because she's afraid that everyone at Jackie M. will find out about her stroke.

Taylor: Oh, so what? So what? They all care about you, Stephanie. And God knows they need you.

Stephanie: Not like this.

Pam: You're not an invalid, Steph.

Stephanie: Please stop, okay? I've made my decision.

Pam: Yeah, and it's the wrong decision, if you ask me.

Stephanie: Pammy, I know you wanna help me. Let's just drop it.

Taylor: Why don't you just let me, um, have a couple of minutes alone with your sister, okay?

Pam: Okay. Maybe you can talk some sense into her. Bye.

Stephanie: I don't know why I'm so hard on her. She loves me, and all she wants to do is be there for me.

Taylor: I don't think you have to worry about Pam. And I think she-- she understands what you're going through.

Stephanie: Really? How could anyone understand who hasn't gone through it?

Taylor: Well, I've dealt with a lot of stroke patients.

Stephanie: Good.

Taylor: Mm-hmm.

Stephanie: Then you won't try and get me to change my mind.

Taylor: No, I wonít.

Stephanie: Good. I--

Taylor: But I think I know why. I know why you feel the way you do.

Stephanie: It's more than just the stroke.

Taylor: Is it?

Stephanie: Mm-hmm. I have accomplished what I set out to do at Jackieís, and... (Sighs) it's time to move on.

Taylor: Hmm. Okay. Okay. Fine. I just have one question. What is it you have to move on to?

Nick: It's not gonna be easy to replace Stephanie.

Jackie: Replacing her isn't my concern at the moment. Everything she's done for the company in the last, what, two months, we're gonna benefit from for years. This is more than a business matter.

Nick: She's gotten under your skin, hasn't she?

Jackie: Yours, too.

Nick: It's crazy, isn't it, how we're feeling about her?

Jackie: Well, my archenemy.

Nick: You remember when I first wanted to hire her, you thought I was out of my mind. So did I. But, um, everything seems to work out.

Jackie: Oh, it's more than worked out. I have so come to... respect her. I mean, she's become my friend. I've got a bad feeling about this, Nicky. Stephanie is not a quitter. There has to be some other reason.

Nick: Mother, she won't tell us. If she won't tell us...

Jackie: Well, I'm not gonna stand by and just let her walk out of our lives. We've gotta do something.

Nick: Well, I just don't think it's gonna do any good to talk to her.

Jackie: Well, no. As--as a business-- no, it won't do any good at all, but--but as a friend...

Nick: You really think you can reach her on that level?

Jackie: (Sighs) We have to convince her, Nicky, not to leave us, for her sake, as well as ours.

Stephanie: Look, I don't know what's next for me, but I don't want to be a burden.

Taylor: Is anyone treating you like you're a burden?

Stephanie: No, because they don't know what's happened, and I want to keep it that way.

Taylor: Which means you're isolating yourself. But no, that's--that's-- that's a very normal reaction. It's just that you-- you've gotta fight it.

Stephanie: I don't want pity. Do you understand? I couldn't live with that. (Sighs)

Taylor: Listen to me, Stephanie. You are going to recover, but you will recover much faster if you have the support of all the people who love you. And there are so many people that love you.

Stephanie: Thank you. I appreciate that. I love you, too. But this is my problem, and I have to deal with it.

Taylor: How? How are you gonna deal with it?

Stephanie: I don't know. I haven't thought that through, Taylor.

Taylor: You know what? I... I think your sister Pam-- I think she's exactly right. You're-- you're running from this stroke. You're not facing it head-on. And that is not like you, Stephanie. I-I know that it's not in your personality to ask for help. But that's what you need to do. You need to reach out right now and ask for some help. Ri--but... (Scoffs) You're doing the opposite right now, Stephanie.

Stephanie: Taylor, Taylor, Taylor, Taylor, Taylor. Look, I was doing so well, okay? I... I poured my heart and soul into Jackie M. And I thought that that was enough to sustain me, you know, for the loss that I felt after Eric and being forced out of the company and all of that. But you know, when I look back now, and... (Sighs) I think about all the energy and the love and all the work that I poured into my family, into building that company. I mean, it's like such a waste. I... (Sighs)

Taylor: You found another purpose for your life in your work with Jackie M.

Stephanie: I'm just tired of fighting. I feel like I've been struggling my whole--God--my whole life.

Stephanie: How self-indulgent is that? Here's the truth. I'm old. I'm tired. I want to bow out gracefully on my own terms.

Taylor: Stop it. Stop it, Stephanie. It's not like you to just give up. And this is not the right time to try to do that right now. Do those words sound familiar to you? That's what you said to me... just a few months ago after I lost my daughter.

Taylor: And then I lost Ridge. And I thought everything was falling apart around me, and I didn't want to go on. But you told me not to give up. And I'm not gonna give up on you either.

Stephanie: I'm tired, Taylor.

Stephanie: I canít. (Sighs)

Taylor: Yes, you can.

Taylor: Stephanie... (Sniffles) let me be your strength. I want to be here for you. I want to do that. You've-- you've been there for me. You've helped me through so many things in my life. And now it's my turn. You made me strong enough to do that. I wanna do it. Please don't push the people away from you who love you. I love you. Please don't push me away.

Stephanie: Oh, honey.

Taylor: (Sniffles)
