Rick: Steffy, please. This is not as big of a deal as you think it is.
Steffy: You don't think so?
Rick: No, I donít. Your parents set me up. Both of them.
Steffy: Hmm. Really? How did they do that?
Rick: Your father provoked me. He secretly recorded my responses. They're--they're desperate, Steffy. Why can't you see that?
Rick: Yes, desperate. Your parents would do anything and everything to prevent us from getting married. That's what this is, Steffy. But our love is way beyond this. Please, do not let anything stand in our way. Not now.
Brooke: Hi, guys. (Sighs)
Brooke: Have you seen Ridge around?
Katie: Haven't you seen him since the shower?
Brooke: No. Have you?
Katie: Well, he and Taylor came by after you left.
Brooke: To the shower?
Katie: Yeah, it was already over. Rick and Steffy had already gone.
Brooke: What did they want?
Katie: I don't know.
Donna: But they seemed pretty stressed out.
Ridge: I don't know how much more of this I can take.
Taylor: We have to trust Steffy.
Ridge: Yeah, we did that before. Look where it got us.
Ridge: Maybe we should just go in there and have it out.
Taylor: No, Ridge. Ridge. Steffy insisted on handling this alone.
Ridge: You know the kind of spin he's gonna put on this, right?
Taylor: We have to believe she'll know that, too.
Rick: (Sighs) (chuckles) Oh, I cannot believe your parents. They're acting like a bunch of spies-- secretly recording conversations, tricking me into saying things that I didn't mean.
Steffy: So my dad tricked you? Is that your take on this?
Rick: Yes. Yes, he tricked me, okay? Think about it. Pushing my buttons. Provoking me to say things, and--and--and getting the responses that he wanted. Yeah, I don't remember half the stuff I said.
Steffy: Well, do you want to hear it? It's--it's right here.
Rick: No. God, no. I don't want to hear that. (Chuckles)
Steffy: Why not?
Steffy: You seem to think it's pretty funny.
Rick: Listen, Steffy, I know you must be very upset with your parents right now, but think about it. In a--in a very bizarre way, they're just protecting you from the big, bad guy who happens to be crazy about you. And I am. You know I am. Maybe I haven't told you enough, but it's because I don't know how to express my feelings. What--what I mean is, I don't know how to express how I feel about you in words.
Rick: (recording) Steffy is not your little girl anymore. I own her. Do you hear what I'm saying to you, Ridge? I own her, and there's not a damn thing you can do to change that. Ridge, can you believe this? The irony in this situation? That--that Steffy has fallen madly in love with me of all people, and you hate me more than anybody else in this entire world. And I have Steffy eating out of my hands. And if you keep fighting us, if you make us miserable, I will take her the hell away from here, and you will never see her again.
Rick: All right, I know that sounds really bad, but your father was forcing me to say those things.
Steffy: Forced you? Hmm. What exactly did he say to force you to make that response, hmm? You own me? You're gonna take me away? He's never gonna see me again? Wow, after everything he's been through, that's just plain cruel.
Rick: Trust me. This is not what it seems.
Steffy: Trust you? Trust you? I-I have been trusting you...
Steffy: To mend fences with my dad, to put all of this behind us. But this? This is defiance and arrogance. What you said was just so ugly, and you were so in his face.
Rick: Because he was in mine, Steffy. I told you, he was deliberately pulling this stuff out of me.
Steffy: All right. Then I'll ask it again. How? What did my father do to get you to say that? What were my father's words to cause you to disrespect me? Because that's what this is-- total disrespect of women that you claim to love so much.
Brooke: Taylor. When is she gonna let it go?
Donna: Honey, Ridge was with Taylor. They were both looking for Steffy.
Brooke: (Sighs) Yes, because Ridge and Taylor have concerns about Steffy marrying Rick, but Ridge is trying to get past it, and Taylor isnít. (Sighs)
Katie: So Ridge is doing Taylor's bidding now?
Brooke: Well, he has been more sensitive to her, especially since Phoebe died.
Donna: Well, the Ridge I saw was pretty intense. I mean, I don't know whether it was because of Taylor--
Katie: Is everything okay between you and Ridge? I mean, really?
Brooke: Yeah. Yeah, everything's okay. I mean, we have some problems, but who doesn't?
Katie: Nothing serious?
Brooke: I hope not.
Donna: You hope not? Brooke, what's-- what is it? What's going on?
Brooke: (Sighs) I-I think Ridge is just under a lot of stress.
Donna: Is there something wrong with Ridge? It--
Brooke: Ridge? No. Oh, my gosh. He's as vital and sexy as ever. And he can't keep his hands off me.
Katie: Well, we weren't really talking about that.
Donna: (Sighs) Or maybe we are. Honey, is there a problem?
(Spoon clinks on table)
Brooke: (Sighs) It seems like these issues with Rick have finally come into our bedroom.
Katie: They have?
Brooke: For the first time ever, Ridge wasn't in the mood.
Donna: Oh, that-- that's--that's not a big deal. My honey bear has pills for that. I'll--I'll get you some. No--no, really, they're great. They're--they're great.
Ridge: It must have been tough playing that recording for her.
Taylor: (Sighs) One of the lowest points of my life. But I know I had to do it.
Ridge: Well, we'll be there for her, Doc. She'll have all the support in the world from now on.
Taylor: I don't want to be talking like that just yet. We don't know how this will go.
Ridge: No, you're right. Right. He's talked his way out of tight situations before, hasn't he?
Ridge: Better not do it this time, or I swear I'lló
Rick: I never would have said those things if your father hadn't been goading me. You know how he gets around me, Steffy.
Steffy: Then what did he say?
Rick: I don't remember exactly.
Steffy: Well, do you want to hear the conversation? I know we have the whole thing--
Rick: Oh, my God, come on. Don't do this now.
Steffy: Don't do what? Demand accountability? You made some outrageous statements.
Rick: You have known for quite some time now that I have major issues with your father, most having to do with the fact that I hated the way he treated my mom when I was growing up. But I have been dealing with those issues, and I need you to help me.
Steffy: Which I obviously have been doing, obviously with no affect. (Scoffs)
Rick: I've been getting better. This whole thing was just a damn fluke.
Rick: (recording) My marriage to Steffy-- it's not about two people in love. It's about revenge. It's about revenge for the years of pain that you have inflicted upon my mother and me. So when I'm saying my vows in your little destiny-westiny spot on the beach, I'm not even gonna be looking at my bride. I'm gonna be looking at you, poncho, and the pain etched in your face as you say "bye-bye" to another daughter.
Steffy: I suppose that's a fluke, too?
Rick: Okay. All right. I understand what you're-- what you're thinking. I--that was way out of control. I did--I-- I never should have said those things.
Steffy: But you did, and you meant it. I can hear it in your voice. My God, Rick, you are talking about a moment so sacred-- our wedding vows. And you won't even be looking at me. You'll be looking at my father? Our wedding to you is all about revenge, just like what my dad said.
Rick: No, no, Steffy. I didn't mean it.
Steffy: Don't! Don't! Don't tell me you didn't mean it, 'cause I know you damn well did. This wedding to you is all about you making my dad suffer. You just want to take pleasure in it and smile at it, and I'm supposed to stand there and take part in this?
Rick: Okay, you are blowing this way, way out of proportion right now.
Steffy: Yeah, yeah, I've been telling myself that. And stupidly, I almost believed it until I heard that. The words that came out of your mouth are sick. You have no respect for me, Rick.
Rick: You are taking this all way out of context.
Steffy: Rick, there is not context of words for as cruel and as heartless as these.
Rick: And your father? It's not heartless to--to--to--to treat you as a possession? To prevent you from marrying the man that you love? That's not heartless? It's not?
Steffy: No. No. That's being a father, Rick. That's being a father when you've lost one daughter. For you to just throw that in my father's face when he's still grieving over the death of my sister, for you to threaten my dad that you'll take me away, and he'll never see me again-- I can't even believe those words came out of your mouth.
Rick: Now you just wait a second. I never meant to go there.
Steffy: I don't give a damn what you meant. You are not half the man my father is. And those chicken noises? My God. You are this sick, disturbed man. I don't know you. I don't want to know you, and I definitely do not want to marry you.
Taylor: I don't know what to say to you. I'm-- (sighs) I'm just so thankful for the sacrifices you're making.
Ridge: It doesn't feel like a sacrifice to me, Doc. She's our daughter. I'd do anything to keep her safe and away from that jerk.
Taylor: But I'm grateful.
Ridge: I know you are.
Taylor: No, I don't-- I don't think you really understand how much, though. I don't know how I would have gotten through this without you. I have no idea. You just can't imagine how-- how thankful I am that you're here with me right now.
Rick: Steffy, you're--you're upset. And quite frankly, I don't blame you. You have every right in the world to be mad, but you're consumed with the negative energy around here. You need a break. Why don't we--why don't we go on that trip to Hawaii?
Rick: You know, the one we were just planning?
Steffy: Are you serious? Are you even hearing a word I'm saying? You have issues, some serious issues...
Steffy: With my father, your mother, my grandmother and just about everyone. Until you sort those out, I can't be with you.
Rick: Please, Steffy, don't say that.
Steffy: Rick, I deserve better, much better, not a man who disrespects me or my father.
Rick: I do respect you.
Steffy: No, you donít. You said you own me. That's so disrespectful. Look, you have problems...
Steffy: But they're your problems, not mine, so solve them. And maybe, just maybe, I--
Rick: (Sighs) Wait, wait. So let me get this straight. This is all happening right now because I lost it with your father?
Steffy: What? No. It's because I don't matter to you.
Rick: That's not true.
Steffy: Yes, it is. Look, maybe you're not even aware of it. But I am not the main focus. Your main focus is about revenge and payback. For you to look at our wedding as the final knife in my father's back, I just--
Rick: I don't see it that way!
Steffy: Oh, okay. Do you want to hear the recording again?
Rick: Oh, God. Just--
Steffy: Because this is your words, your feelings, your hatred. I need to come first to the man that I marry, and I obviously don't come first to you. I don't even know what your feelings are. I thought you loved me.
Rick: I do.
Steffy: No, you donít. You don't even know what love is, because you used me, and I won't be used. It's over Rick. Please leave.
Rick: I'm not goin' anywhere.
Taylor: To know that I'm not alone in this and have your full support, it's--it's huge.
Ridge: You really think I was gonna let you fight my battles with Rick? It is my battle, you know.
Taylor: But it's our daughter.
Ridge: I can only hope we taught her well.
Taylor: Taught her what?
Ridge: To respect herself and not to cave in every time some guy turns on some fake charm.
Taylor: Well, I know one thing for sure is Steffy respects her father a great deal, and she is not going to tolerate the way he spoke about you on that recording.
Ridge: He's not going to give up too easily. You know that.
Taylor: Well, she isn't going to tolerate him using her, either. She's too proud and stubborn.
Ridge: Just like her dad.
Taylor: Yes, thank God.
Steffy: Rick, beat it. There is nothing more to say.
Rick: Yes, there is.
Steffy: Well, I don't want to hear it.
Rick: You're right.
Steffy: Oh, great. Another con job, right?
Rick: Everything I said on that recording about you, about your father was all wrong. It was sick, and it was twisted, and I regret it.
Steffy: Fine. Apologize. That doesn't change anything.
Rick: I am not the man on that recording, Steffy. You know that. At least, I don't want to be.
Steffy: Well, then change. Why don't you go off somewhere and make yourself a better person?
Rick: I tried that.
Steffy: Oh, wait, no. You pretended to try. Oh, like when you joined the army, and you knew you were gonna get rejected. All about manipulation, just like this is.
Rick: Oh, God, come on. All right, fine. You--you know what? I can understand how you would think that. Hell, it--it might even be true, because everything I've done as of late as been for effect. I admit that. Because I've wanted you to see me differently from the way I see myself.
Steffy: Rick, you have some good qualities, but you ignore them. You go into this dark space where you dwell on rejection and hatred.
Rick: You're absolutely right. I'm consumed with hatred... for myself. That's the root of the problem. I have put on a facade for you, and you couldn't see it, because I didn't want you to see it. When I first felt what it was I felt for you, it--I can't even describe it. I wanted to be the man that you deserve, but I didn't know what that was. I didn't know who that was. So I did the only thing I knew how-- I turned on the charm, because I ooze charm.
Steffy: Yeah, and I fell for it.
Rick: It almost worked.
Steffy: No, Rick, it didn't almost work. I wasn't attracted to you because of your charm. I was attracted to you because of your goodness. Maybe it's in there. Maybe you'll find it someday. I don't know.
Rick: So help me. Help me find it. I can be a good, decent man for you. Just give another chance.
Steffy: I don't trust you.
Rick: Then let me earn back your trust. You're the best thing in my life--the only thing.
Steffy: I am not a "thing." I am a woman that needs to be cherished, and you didn't do that. And I don't think you ever will.
Rick: Don't-- (sighs) I can do that. I swear I can. Look, I'll tell you what. You give me another shot, and I cross the line, you won't have to tell me to leave.
Steffy: Oh, my--
Rick: I will walk out that door all by myself, 'cause that will prove to me that I am incapable of changing.
Steffy: Rick, I don't want to be with someone who have to help them find a sense of who they are. You need help.
Rick: Okay, I--fine. I get it. It--it's hard to love somebody who can't love them self. Steffy, what I did was--was vile. It was horrible. I'm embarrassed by it. But in a--in a twisted way, I-I'm almost glad it happened, because I learned a very valuable lesson, one that I'm never gonna forget. If you give me another opportunity, I swear to you, I will be the man that you thought I was. If this has meant even half to you what it's meant to me, what we've shared so far, then we have got to give this another try. We cannot let this go. Forgive me, Steffy. Please. Give me one more chance.
