Judge: Order! There'll be order in this courtroom.
Tartaro: I object! They're making a circus out of this proceeding.
Christine: Your honor, Rick Forrester needs to be heard. Only he can speak to the miscarriage of justice that is preventing my client from speaking on his own behalf.
Tartaro: Am I the only one who finds this a little too convenient? We've just heard testimony that Rick Forrester has no recollection of shooting Grant Chambers. Leaving nothing to substantiate the defendant's claim that his prior conviction was a tragic mistake, directly and solely of his own making. Nanoseconds later, in bursts Rick to save the day.
Christine: There's no conspiracy here, counselor.
Tartaro: Fine. Let him testify -- in front of a jury.
Christine: Savage my client?
Judge: She has a point.
Christine: Given that Rick has come forward of his own volition, we ask for the courts indulgence until the matter is decided.
Tartaro: It was decided. Your motion was denied.
Judge: I'm going to use that word again, Ms. Tartaro, the one you dislike so much -- leeway.
Tartaro: Your honor --
Judge: Will you give up your right to introduce evidence of the defendant's prior conviction given the current allegations that are being made about its viability?
Judge: Then I see no alternative, at abundance of caution, to hear what the young man has to say.
Christine: Tell us why you came here, Rick.
Rick: I remembered.
Christine: You remembered shooting Grant Chambers?
Rick: I hated the man. He married my mom. He took all of her time, I barely saw her after that.
Christine: Were you jealous?
Rick: I resented the man like I've resented few people before or since.
Christine: When did you start to remember what happened?
Rick: This morning. I was talking to Phoebe and my mom. They came to see me and asked me if I had tried to remember. I told them I tried, nothing -- I couldn't remember anything. I took some time alone and I thought about it as much as I possibly could. And it came back to me. Everything. The images, the flashes in my head, they were so vivid, so clear, so real. I can -- I can see Grant Chambers. He's sitting at his desk. And -- I hated this man. He was wrecking my life. I had to do something about it and this was my chance. I had a gun. I have no idea where it came from. But I raised it. And I --
[Gun being cocked]
Christine: You fired the gun at Grant?
Rick: Yeah. I'd never heard anything so loud in my entire life. I'd never been so scared. I thought, you know, maybe somebody heard me. And I just, all I could do, was look at his body. It wasn't moving. He was slumped in his chair, over the desk. And -- I couldn't breathe, I couldn't move.
Christine: Your witness.
Tartaro: So Ridge is the one who told you what you'd done.
Rick: That's right, yes.
Tartaro: After he was arrested for killing Shane.
Tartaro: Ridge Forrester's daughter, Phoebe, she's your girlfriend, is she not?
Rick: She is.
Tartaro: And your mother, Brooke Logan, is it fair to say that she and Ridge are close?
Rick: It's fair to say, yes.
Tartaro: What about your mother and you? Close relationship?
Tartaro: Things good with you and Phoebe?
Rick: They're great, yeah.
Tartaro: How about Phoebe and her dad.
Rick: They're pretty tight.
Tartaro: So, given all these relationships, the love and the closeness you described, with your mother and Phoebe, you'd do just about anything to help Ridge Forrester, right?
Tartaro: Would you explain that?
Rick: I despise the man, I always have. You could ask anybody here.
Tartaro: Despite the fact that you now believe he took the blame for you?
Rick: He didn't do it for me. He did it for my mom. As far as I'm concerned, I don't owe Ridge a damn thing.
Judge: I think I've heard all the testimony and given it careful consideration. I'm going to reverse myself and disallow any mention of Ridge Forrester's prior conviction.
Christine: Thank you, your honor.
Judge: Now, in the small matter of your client's murder charge --
Christine: We stipulate to the state's evidence of obstruction. My client, having panicked after Shane took his own life.
Tartaro: Objection --
Christine: After Shane's death, excuse me. Because of Ridge's mistaken belief that his prior conviction was the legal basis for a murder charge. Now, we know that's not the case, but Ridge Forrester, a fashion designer with no law training, did not. He heard the voice of that long-ago judge threatening him with dire consequences if he were ever to be involved in another incident involving a firearm. So instead of coming forward, which was his natural instinct --
Tartaro: Excuse me, judge, shouldn't a jury be in on this?
Christine: We are not contesting the state's case. Except on one issue. How and why Shane McGrath was shot. Thanks to granting our motion, your honor, we know that we can safely testify in front of a jury, without the fear of prejudice. However, I still believe, if you were just to listen to what Ridge has to say, it would save us a lot of time and taxpayer money.
Judge: Now you're asking for a bench trail?
Christine: Yes, your honor.
Judge: Mr. Forrester, is that your desire?
Ridge: Yes, your honor. It is.
Judge: Miss Tartaro, will you accept the defendant's offer to stipulate?
Tartaro: Are you asking me to accept her theory right along with it?
Judge: Do you, yes or no?
Tartaro: All right, yes. The state rests.
Judge: Miss Blair?
Christine: The defense calls Ridge Forrester to the stand.
Christine: After the gun went off, was that the end of the struggle?
Ridge: At first, I didn't know if either one of us had been shot. I was still holding on to Shane's wrists, and he had this wild look in his eye. I half expected him to lunge at me.
Christine: Did he?
Ridge: No, we, I guess we both kind of sank to our knees together.
Christine: Shane pulled you down with him?
Ridge: Yeah. When I let go, he fell backwards. I'm pretty sure he died instantly.
Christine: All yours.
Tartaro: I have no questions for this witness.
Judge: You may step down. Miss Blair?
Christine: Your honor, we move for a direct verdict of "Not guilty" on the charge of murder in the first degree.
Judge: I'm prepared to rule now. Mr. Forrester, you made a series of horrendously bad decisions, when you determined that Mr. McGrath was dead. You say regret them, and I believe you. So, in the matter of your guilty plea for obstruction, I'll grant bond in the amount of $50,000, pending sentencing.
Christine: Thank you, your honor.
Judge: As for the murder charge, based on the facts of this case, the un-contradicted testimony of the only known witness. And as well as the lack of any physical evidence tying the defendant to a criminal act within reasonable doubt, I find the defendant, Ridge Forrester, not guilty. Mr. Forrester, you're free to go.
[Judge bangs gavel]
Felicia: Hey big brother? Congratulations.
Ridge: Thanks. Thank you, sweetie. Is this for real or what?
Thorne: It's about as real as it gets. Congratulations, man.
Ridge: Thank you. Thank you.
Eric: Listen, the sooner we can get you out of here, the better.
Ridge: Oh, tell me about it. Tell me about it.
Eric: You two, come with me.
Phoebe: You're coming home. I told you.
Ridge: When your right, your right, huh? Your son came out and saved the day.
Brooke: Yes he did. And I'm sure he'll love to hear that coming directly from you.
Stephanie: Taylor, I hope you'll come to the house. I think everyone wants you to.
Taylor: Sure, I think I'll take you up on that.
Stephanie: All right.
Taylor: I'll see you there.
Ridge: Bye sweetie.
Phoebe: Love you.
Stephanie: Well, the nightmare's over.
Ridge: Mother, I want to thank you, for your continual faith in me.
Stephanie: Oh honey, I'm supposed to look out for you, and I'm the one that got you into this.
Ridge: Well, I know you were just doing what you thought was best at the time.
Stephanie: Every night that you were in that jail was just -- just agony for me, and I -- I knew this moment would come, and it has, hasn't it? You're free.
Stephanie: You're free.
Ridge: Yeah, it's all here.
Guard: Sign here please. Thank you, Mr. Forrester.
Christine: Thank you.
Ridge: Is that it?
Christine: Ah, yeah. I think so. It looks like you have one last visitor. I have to see the clerk; I'll be right back.
Ridge: How do I ever thank you?
Rick: For what?
Ridge: Coming forward, telling the truth. You remembered.
Rick: No, I didn't. I didn't remember a damn thing.
Ridge: What are you saying here? That this was all an act?
Rick: I spoke up on your behalf, risked everything so Phoebe's father would not go to jail.
Ridge: So I owe you, is that it?
Rick: I don't believe any of this. As far as I'm concerned, I never shot Grant Chambers. I said it for your daughter's sake. Now are you going to get it through your head how much your daughter means to me? Ridge, until the day I die, I will never believe I could have shot anybody, but I said it. I would do anything for your daughter. So are you still going to stand in our way? Or are you going to give Phoebe and me a chance?
Ridge: All right.
Rick: Really? You mean that?
Ridge: One condition -- you respect Phoebe. You don't let her down. If I ever catch you with anyone else, or find out that you're not treating her well, you'll answer to me. But I'm not going to stand in your way anymore Rick. Not anymore.
Rick: Thank you.
Ridge: So we're out of here?
Christine: We are, and I would take you home, except there's someone else who would like to do that.
Felicia: Pepper steak? Got to be, it's Ridge's favorite.
Thorne: Well, I'm like Rachael Ray in the kitchen.
Stephanie: Nice to see everyone's smiling again. Well, almost everyone.
Eric: I'm worried about Rick. This whole thing's been so hard on him. I don't want Rick's confession to get out.
Stephanie: Well, I don't imagine the district attorney's office is going to release it. I mean if they had, we'd have press outside already.
Eric: That's no guarantee. We need to get a gag order.
Stephanie: Fine, I'll call the attorneys. I'll get it taken care of.
Eric: No, don't you dare. You've done enough already.
Stephanie: Eric, let's just be happy all right? Ridge is free, let's just focus on that.
Eric: As apposed to focusing on your part in this whole thing? Once again, I hope you've learned your lesson.
Stephanie: Well, I'm happy. Ridge has averted a major crisis in his life, I think. But I am a little worried that there may be another one on the horizon. Brooke.
Ridge: I can't believe you're here.
Brooke: Did you think I was going to let you take the bus?
Ridge: Probably serve me right. I owe you so much.
Brooke: No, you don't owe me anything.
Ridge: If you hadn't made the effort with Rick, we'd be saying good-bye right now for a very long time.
Brooke: I couldn't let that happen.
Ridge: But no one had the choice.
Brooke: Well, you know me, when I get determined.
Ridge: Hurricane Logan.
Brooke: You've done some things that have disappointed me. And you've made some mistakes. But then, so have I. But then I was reminded of what you did for my child. You were a kind, decent man. And you still are. I haven't forgotten.
Eric: Christine, you were wonderful. Thank you, we're in your debt.
Christine: Oh, and I will remember that next time I need a great outfit.
Stephanie: Oh, please do! Thank you so much. Oh, Rick finally showed up.
Eric: He hasn't come inside, thought.
Stephanie: Well, you know, he -- he might just not feel comfortable about that.
Eric: Let him stay out there with Phoebe. He's going to need all of our support. It's been a big ordeal for him.
Phoebe: Dad actually said that? He's not standing in our way?
Rick: No, apparently I caught him at a very good time.
Phoebe: I can't believe it! I mean, we can actually be, like, a normal couple out in the open.
Rick: I know. It sounds like heaven.
Phoebe: Mm-mm, you are. You're my hero. I never loved you more than I did in that courtroom. When you stood up and saved my dad, thank God you remembered when you did.
Stephanie: You know it's -- I'm just so upset. Ridge is free, here we are, everybody's waiting to celebrate. And what's he doing? He's spending time with Brooke.
Eric: You leave Ridge and Brooke alone.
Stephanie: Oh, it doesn't concern you? The way she -- the way she acted with Nick when she came back from Sydney? And now Nick's not available, so all of sudden, she set her sights on Ridge again? I want to tell you something, Eric. I'm not going to let that happen. I mean it. I'm going to stop her.
Brooke: When I think back to what happened in Sydney --
Ridge: Oh, please. Let's not do that now.
Brooke: It seems almost surreal now. You two are at such odds. And to think that there was a time when you would do anything to protect us. Well, if there's a blessing in this, it's that you two are coming full circle. And I feel like that's happening with us.
Ridge: What would you be saying here?
Brooke: I forgive you. I'm just sorry it took almost losing you to remember what a remarkable man you really are.
Ridge: I am sorry that I lost it with Rick in Sydney. I should never have hit your son. And I can promise you that will never, ever happen again.
Brooke: I know. And now you have your future ahead of you to keep that promise.
