Ashley: Hello? I'm working here.

Rick: Not anymore.

Ashley: Privacy?

Rick: We're gonna need it. It's impossible, you know.

Ashley: What is?

Rick: Not thinking about you. I need something more.

Ashley: Something only I can give you?

Rick: And all it will take is one look. One touch. One kiss.

[Alarm beeps]

Ashley: Oh, boy. These fumes are starting to get to me.

Brooke: Did Ridge kill that boy?

Stephanie: Ridge is not a murderer!

Brooke: Well, somehow it happened, didn't it?

Stephanie: I don't know what you're talking about.

Brooke: You've loved Ridge longer than I have and even more blindly. There's nothing in this world that you wouldn't do for him. What have you gotten yourself into now?

Phoebe: My father doesn't want to date you, so suddenly he's a killer?

Ashley: You've been misinformed.

Phoebe: No, you're doing the misinforming, Ashley. Every time a door slams, you think it's a gun going off?

Ashley: I haven't accused anyone of anything. I spoke to Rick because people are asking me questions, Phoebe. I wasn't sure if I had the answers or not.

Phoebe: That's a lie.

Ashley: You're letting your mouth run away with you.

Phoebe: You know, I have you all figured out. You like your job here, right? I mean, you're all smiles when my grandparents are around. But how dare my father blow you off. So you find the one person in this entire building who hates my dad and tell him all of your theories that you hope someday the police will hear.

Ashley: You don't know me. That petty and that devious, I am not.

Phoebe: Then why would you choose Rick, of all people, to tell this to?

Rick: Nick, it might not have been a gunshot that Ashley heard, okay? She didn't see anything.

Nick: Forget about the noise. Could be something in that building. It's got to be in that building, in the office, whether it's some sort of a stain they missed or a powder burn. I need you to be my eyes and ears.

Rick: Yeah, yeah, I can do that.

Nick: One second, counselor. Listen, Forrester's Phoebe's old man. I know how you feel about her. I know what I'm asking.

Rick: Truth is truth.

Stephanie: Why won't you believe me?

Brooke: I want to, Stephanie. I do. Why don't you trust me? You know what I think? I think that Shane was in love with Phoebe, and she broke his heart. And he didn't feel like he could live without her. You and I both understand that feeling, 'cause we've been Makes you do things that you never expect. So, he blames Ridge. It's all his fault. Maybe he was waiting for Ridge. Did Shane have a gun? Did they fight?

Stephanie: Brooke --

Brooke: Maybe Ridge --

Stephanie: Brooke -- you know my Ridge.

Brooke: Yes. Yes, of course I do.

Stephanie: You know that he could never --

Brooke: No. No, I know that.

Stephanie: It wasn't murder.

Storm: But at the time that she heard this sound, did Ms. Abbott think it was a gunshot?

Nick: What are we talking about here? She works in a high-rise. You hear a noise, who knows where your head goes.

Storm: Nick, I'm thinking like the other side. They're not gonna let you walk into court and argue that somebody else could have done it. You have to prove that you didn't.

Nick: Well, maybe Rick will find some evidence for us.

Storm: And maybe Brooke will get something out of Stephanie.

Nick: Well, no matter who or what it is, something's got to go our way and soon.

Ashley: Obviously, there's a lot's at stake here. And I don't know too many people in Los Angeles. I thought I could speak with Rick and it wouldn't go any further.

Phoebe: Rick doesn't have secrets from me.

Ashley: Look, I understand that you're going through a very difficult time, but you need to reign yourself in here.

[Phone rings]

Phoebe: No sane person who knows my father could think what you think. Only Nick because he hates him.

Ashley: Ashley Abbott.

Storm: Yeah, hi, ms. Abbott. This is Stephen Logan, Nick Marone's attorney. I was wondering if you wouldn't mind coming down to the courthouse to have a word with us. I know this may seem out of the blue, but --

Ashley: Actually, it doesn't, and I can do that.

Storm: Good. Well, thanks. I'll let the guard at the front lobby know you'll be in.

Ashley: You're welcome. I need to wrap this up, so please listen to me. I like and respect your father as much as anybody I've met in Los Angeles. But if somebody asks me a question, I'm going to tell them the truth. If that makes you think your father has something to worry about, then you're doing the mental leap, not me.

Phoebe: Please. Nick Marone will think anything bad about my father, and so will Rick. My dad didn't even see Shane.

Ashley: I don't know anything about Shane McGrath, Phoebe, except for the fact that you seem to have a difficult time convincing him you weren't interested in him, which is why he kept coming around. So if anybody has a guilty conscience, it's not me.

Stephanie: Shane -- Shane was distraught because of Phoebe. He said he didn't want to live without her, and he apparently put the gun to his head. He was gonna kill himself.

Brooke: Oh, my God.

Stephanie: Ridge grabbed for it. They fought, and -- and the gun went off. And I -- I guess Shane must have just fallen dead. Ridge said he ran to get the phone to call the police, and then he -- he realized he couldn't.

Brooke: But why?

Stephanie: Because of Grant and Rick. He took the blame. He took the blame for shooting Grant for Rick. He did it for you, because he loved you. He did it for your son. And remember, the court told him that if he ever, ever was brought up on any kind of a charge involving a gun, he'd automatically go to prison. Brooke, that's what will happen now unless you keep silent.

Rick: Hello?

[Rick remembering]

Ridge: If you ever -- and I mean ever -- cross the line with my daughter, I' I told you to shut your mouth. Shut your mouth. You stay the hell away from my daughter.

Brooke: Ridge, stop it!

Ridge: Stay the hell away from her!

Brooke: Leave him alone!

Ridge: You bastard. Bastard, get off of her!

Phoebe: Dad, what are you doing? Dad, leave him alone!

Ridge: Get off of her!

Phoebe: Dad, dad! Rick!

Brooke: Rick? Oh, my God. Oh, Rick, honey.

Storm: And then when I told her that Taylor's convinced that Ridge did it --

Nick: Brooke will never believe it.

Storm: Well, okay, she loves the guy, but then so did Taylor.

Nick: Right, wrong, it doesn't matter. The guy's always forgiven.

Guard: Three minutes.

Storm: Hey, we're trying to build a defense here. Sorry about that. Stephen Logan.

Ashley: Ashley Abbott. Maybe I can save you some time. I take it that Rick's been busy today.

Nick: Yeah, he's been here. Ashley, the sound that you heard --

Ashley: I didn't mention it before because I'd forgotten. Well, actually, I didn't forget. I didn't associate it with anything but Stephanie and the freight elevator.

Nick: Freight elevator?

Ashley: That's what Stephanie said it was, and I can't prove it was anything else.

Storm: Well, what was her manner at the time?

Ashley: She was startled, too. I didn't think she was trying to cover anything, at least not then.

Nick: Well, not then. But you thought so later on, when she wouldn't let you into Ridge's office. That's what you said.

Ashley: Mm-hmm.

Storm: Now, have you been in that office since?

Ashley: Yeah. Four or five times a day.

Nick: Anything different in the office? New furniture, flooring?

Ashley: It's a very well-maintained building. I mean, suddenly, there'll new carpeting in the elevator, a new painting on the hallway wall.

Nick: Specifically Ridge's office.

Ashley: I would've noticed it -- I think.

Phoebe: I know what you're doing, and I just can't believe you're doing it.

Stephanie: He panicked. He -- look, he put the body in a garment bag. And he told me he thought about the boat, because he'd been there earlier in the day to see Phoebe. So he took the body down there and wrapped an anchor chain around it.

Brooke: Was this your idea?

Stephanie: No. No, I didn't know anything about it at the time. I was leaving the building when -- I was in the garage. I saw him come downstairs, and he had this -- well, now what I know was the body in a garment bag. And he had the strangest look on his face. And I thought, "Well, there's something really wrong here." So I followed him. And he went down to the marina, and he walked out onto the dock with the body. I thought, "What the hell is going on?" I came back to the office on the chance because he was so upset that he would come back, too, you know. And he did, and I confronted him.

Brooke: You could have gone to the police then.

Stephanie: Yes, you're right. I could have. He could have. He wanted to, and I said no, because -- because he'd dumped the body in the bay. I mean, I thought it would look like premeditated murder.

Brooke: So you didn't let him come forward?

Stephanie: Well, here's what I thought. Shane's just a drifter, and the only connection to any of us was through Phoebe, and that was over. So I thought, if that's over then, well, no one will miss him.

Brooke: Oh, my God, Stephanie. It's a human life! Or don't you care about that?

Stephanie: Do you think that I don't see the tragedy of this whole thing? You think that I don't -- how sad for a young man like that to want to kill himself. But the truth of the matter is, it was suicide. It was an accident.

Brooke: Yes, and now it's a murder case.

Stephanie: Well, if that body had just stayed in the bottom of the bay --

Brooke: But it didn't! And you and Ridge stood by while they arrested Nick.

Stephanie: But I kept thinking, you know, "Any minute now, the police will understand they've made a mistake."

Brooke: Really? Well, what about the shirt that they found -- Nick's shirt -- with Shane's blood on it?

Stephanie: Well, we don't know anything about that. Phoebe said that he and -- Nick and he -- Shane had gotten into a fight. That's all I know.

Brooke: But you also know he was accused for a crime he didn't commit!

Stephanie: Would you rather see your son's father go to prison for a crime he didn't commit?

Brooke: You really don't care about Nick.

Stephanie: No, I don't care about Nick. He's no innocent babe in the woods.

Brooke: And Ridge is in Paris, safe. That's all you care about.

Stephanie: Yes, that's all I care about. And I know you care about him, too.

Brooke: Yes, I do. Enough to put an end to this for all of us!

Phoebe: Find anything you and Ashley can take to the police?

[Door slams]

Rick: Phoebe --

Phoebe: I mean, maybe my dad stabbed Shane with this pencil while he was at it.

Rick: I don't believe that Nick killed Shane McGrath, and neither do you. And I'm not jumping to any conclusions about who did.

Phoebe: Then what are you looking for?

Rick: Anything. Anything that can help. I don't know.

Phoebe: Well, you're not looking on the beach or on Nick's boat. You're looking in my fat office.

Rick: Because this is the last place Shane was seen alive.

Phoebe: By me! I told him to leave, and he did. So what do you think, I killed him?

Rick: Are you serious? No, of course not.

Phoebe: Well, whatever you find -- a coffee stain on the rug -- it all points to my father. Maybe Shane dropped his cup of coffee when my dad shot him.

Rick: Just stop, okay? I am not trying to railroad your father here.

Phoebe: Well, that's the only way things can go if you find something here that looks wrong to you, so drop it. I mean it, Rick. I can't help that you hate my father so much, but if you love me, let this go.

Storm: Okay, so you can't swear that it was a gunshot. Could you testify that it might have been?

Ashley: "Testify"? I can't testify to anything but a bunch of odds and ends that I haven't been able to make sense of. Such as Stephanie showing up at my door in the middle of the night.

Nick: Well, what did she want?

Ashley: To see how my dinner with Ridge went? I don't know. She knew that I'd spoken with you, okay? Granted, there's been a lot of odd behavior on Ridge's part, on Stephanie's part, but nothing that I couldn't explain away with another meaning. And let's face it, that family's a little odd. I mean, no odder than mine, but it is odd.

Nick: To say the least. You know, she sent Ridge off to Paris.

[PDA rings]

Ashley: These people are my friends, and I work with them. And I care about Ridge. It's very difficult for me to believe that he could do what you think he's done. The only thing I c do for you is tell the truth, okay? That's it.

Storm: I'm wanted in judge's chambers. The D.A.'s filed a petition to move up the trial date.

Nick: Move up the trial date? Why that dirty bitch! She sends him off to Paris, she gets me back in jail, because she knows I'm getting too close. We got to do something, a wiretap! Because we know she's gonna call Forrester in Paris.

Storm: The judges are very reluctant to do that.

Nick: Well, then do it illegally! We got to do something to catch her.

Stephanie: Where are you going?

Brooke: You're coming with me.

Stephanie: Where?

Brooke: To tell lieutenant baker exactly what you told me.

Stephanie: No. No, no, no. Look, it's only Ridge's word that Shane wanted to commit suicide. Besides, there'll be other charges. I'm an accessory after the fact.

Brooke: Exactly. So you better come clean now. And I'm sure that's what Ridge would want. Besides, they haven't built a jail that could hold you.

Stephanie: Why should anyone go to jail?

Brooke: Somebody is already in jail.

Stephanie: Nick isn't going to be convicted. It's all-circumstantial. Besides, your brother -- your brother's a wonderful lawyer. Look what he did for Taylor, and she confessed.

Brooke: Nick and Storm know that Ridge did it.

Stephanie: They can't prove it. Look, nobody needs to do anything, please. It was a suicide!

Brooke: I believe you. I do. Not for one minute did I accept the words that Nick said. And yet, you know, Stephanie, you've made sense of it all. Anybody would understand now.

[Stephanie sighs]

Stephanie: Thank you, thank you. Thank you. Who are you calling?

Brooke: Lieutenant Baker, please.

Stephanie: No. Put that phone down.

Brooke: You don't have to talk to him. I will.

Stephanie: No, no. Put the phone down.

Brooke: Yes, I'm holding for Lieutenant Baker.

Stephanie: You're talking about sending Ridge to jail.

Brooke: We'll testify on his behalf. We'll get him off.

Stephanie: No, that's not -- that's not what's gonna happen. Put the phone down.

Brooke: Yes, thank you. Stephanie, this is for Ridge's best interest. The truth needs to be told.

[Brooke gagging]

Announcer: On the next "Bold and the Beautiful" --

Storm: We can still beat this. But if you're pinning your hopes on anyone, pin them on Brooke, 'cause she can get a confession out of Stephanie.
