Brooke: Nick, answer me. Is my little girl all right? Yes or no?

Nick: There's been an accident. I'm at University Hospital. And the doctors are still doing tests.

Brooke: What kind of tests? What aren't you telling me?

Nick: She's still unconscious.

Brooke: Oh, my god. My baby's not awake?

Nick: Not now. Not yet.

Brooke: When? When? What do the doctors say?

Nick: That depends on how long she was actually under water. There could be brain damage.

[ Brooke gasps ]

Nick: She's getting the best care possible. Brooke? Brooke? She's getting the best care possible. Brooke? Brooke?

Eric: I didn't see you there.

Stephanie: Where did you think I'd be? Out visiting the children?

Eric: I came by for the rest of my things, then you can have the whole house to wallow in self-pity.

Stephanie: I'll miss you -- 20% of the time. You were never more than 20% here.

Eric: What do you want from me? Sympathy? Didn't you get enough of that lying in your trumped up hospital bed?

Stephanie: How about a little loyalty, Eric? I spent 40 years of my life propping you up. Couldn't you have stood up for me this one time?

Eric: Stood up for you? Well, let me see, how would that go? "Stephanie's really, really sorry that she lied to all of us. That she sealed it with a million-dollar bribe. And that she left two small children without a father. But she's gonna try really, really hard to never do it again."

Stephanie: No more than I've done for you. A heart attack that didn't happen doesn't compare to the lie of a father and husband, the genius that was never there.

[ Knock on door ]

Massimo: Ah, Jacqueline. Come in.

Jackie: I would have called first, but, literally, I thought you might say you were busy.

Massimo: I do that, don't I? Well, I'll have to work on that.

Jackie: The other night when I left you, you really didn't seem yourself.

Massimo: Neither did you. I would have thought that Stephanie's comeuppance would please you more.

Jackie: That's funny. The person that I was hoping to please was you, as foolish as that sounds now. I mean, did I really imagine that you would be grateful to hear something so shocking about a woman who once meant so much to you? Did I think that you would say, "Jacqueline, you were right. All is forgiven."

Massimo: It had crossed my mind that something of the sort crossed yours.

Jackie: Well, I realized that night that it could make absolutely no difference to the way that things stand between us. In fact, I'm wondering, what can? But I have to know, if the second chance that I want for us so badly is attainable, or if it is just a fantasy. I can wait. I truly can wait. But only if I know that there is something real worth waiting for.

Brooke: Hope Logan. I'm her mother. What room?

Nurse: She's in intensive care.

Brooke: Where's my baby?

Nick: They took her for an EEG.

Brooke: Did something else happen?

Nick: No. No.

Brooke: I want to see the doctor. Where is he?

Nick: Brooke, he's gonna be right back.

Brooke: I left her with you, Nick. I told you to watch her.

Nick: I only turned my head for a minute.

Brooke: She's 4 years old. You can't turn your head for a second when you watching her in the water.

Dr. Sobel: Mrs. Forrester.

Brooke: How's my daughter? How's Hope?

Dr. Sobel: I'm sorry to say there's been a new complication.

Brooke: What do you mean? What kind of complication? Oh, Hope. Hope, sweetheart. Mommy's here. Honey. Oh, no. Hope? Honey, mommy's here.

[ Brooke sobbing ]

Massimo: You were the love of my life. No woman could compare to you. When I found you again and learned that we had a son, a son that I could be proud of, it seemed like a dream.

Jackie: It felt that way to me, too.

Massimo: Well, then why did -- no, no. Let's not revisit that today.

Jackie: I have asked myself that a thousand times. I mean, why? A joyless little affair that I knew I would regret before it even started. Why?

Massimo: I don't know if an answer would help. What I'm trying to say is, that was our second chance, Jacqueline. I'm just too realistic a man to lull myself into thinking that three or four more would come out with a different outcome. But, that's the way it is. Our time came and went. I know myself, Jacqueline. I cannot take the risk of you again.

Eric: All right. That should do it for now.

Stephanie: You sure I won't sell the house out from underneath you?

Eric: Everything's insured and inventoried.

Stephanie: That's right. You relate so well to objects. I should've known that. I wish I'd known that about you when I first met you. I wish I'd understood that was the real meaning of the artist. Selfishly secreting yourself away with your designs, your sketches and your fabrics.

Eric: How else was the work supposed to get done? You know, I supported you very nicely for a long time. Very nicely.

Stephanie: Let's remember it the way it was. I made you. It was my father's money that started this company. Our company. And I am the one that wrote the press releases that called you the self- made man.

Eric: You're absolutely right. I never could've made Forrester Creations the international success it is today without a lot of help.

Stephanie: You're welcome.

Eric: I couldn't have done it without Brooke. Which is why I've asked her to assume co-CEO duties with me. I also gave her your office, which your not going to be needing.

Stephanie: Feel good to kick me when I'm down?

Eric: Well, I know you prefer when I just stand here and take it.

Stephanie: Oh, this is so absurdly adolescent. And you sweeping her into that grand "gone with the wind" kiss in front of me, that was so declasse. I always thought better of you than that.

Eric: I asked Brooke to marry me.

Stephanie: You would. To clear your mind.

Stephanie: Brooke doesn't want you. She left here with her prize on her arm. Ridge.

Eric: Brooke is not with Ridge. Your son had his chance, he didn't take it.

Stephanie: And you're going to be content to settle for being second best?

Eric: I know I'm not Brooke's first choice. But, what did being your first choice ever get me except to be bullied, and nagged, and lied to --

Stephanie: Oh, oh, as opposed to Brooke, who never lied to you. Never cheated on you. I know. She makes you feel 45 again.

Eric: Oh, and that makes me an old fool, doesn't it?

Stephanie: Mm-hmm.

Eric: Well, maybe being with a woman of warmth and feeling is worth that to me.

Stephanie: Well, don't keep me in suspense. What was her answer?

[ Stephanie chuckles ] I'm so sorry.

Eric: I'm gonna ask her again. And again and again. And if she ever says yes, and it only lasts six months, it'll be wonderful.

Stephanie: Are you standing there telling me -- are you telling me you're still in love with her?

Eric: Of course I am. You're just figuring that out?

Jackie: Thank you for being so honest.

Massimo: I never meant to mislead you, if I have.

Jackie: Before today, I actually did think that there was hope.

Massimo: You make it so difficult. Not you -- the fact of loving you.

Jackie: Which you've decided isn't enough.

Massimo: A man can't control his heart, Jacqueline. All he can do is protect it, protect himself from it.

Jackie: I just don't see how any marriage can survive if there isn't forgiveness. Husbands and wives, they slight each other, they wound each other everyday. Sometimes they mean to do it, but most of the time they don't. And if they can't forgive, how do they go on?

Massimo: I don't know. I only know what I require to go on. I'm sorry, Jacqueline.

Jackie: Well, I'm not going to beg, because I have my pride, too. I can live without you. I have. I just wish that I didn't have to. But I'll never stop loving you, Massimo. You may be able to do that, I can't. Because you're the father of my son. You're a man that I so admire, and you are the only man in my whole life that's ever made me be larger. Not smaller. Good-bye, Massimo.

[ Machine beeping ]

Dr. Sobel: An EEG would give us a picture of hope's brainwave activity, but we couldn't complete it because she had another seizure.

Brooke: Another seizure? You didn't tell me she had a seizure.

Dr. Sobel: Now, it could be just that hypoxia -- oxygen deprivation -- has lowered her seizure threshold, temporarily. The radiologist didn't see a focal lesion on her ct scan, which was normal.

Brooke: So, normal -- that means she's not gonna have any brain damage, right?

Dr. Sobel: Well, we did the scan when she was first brought in. If there's tissue necrosis, we wouldn't see it on a ct this soon. And most seizure patients have normal scans.

Brooke: Well, if a normal result isn't a good one, then what is?

Dr. Sobel: There are some positives. Her blood oxygen's up, and we've seen some neuromuscular movement. What would make me happiest is if she came to.

Brooke: You mean when she comes to. If there's a problem, what's it going to be?

Dr. Sobel: It's impossible to say. Chronic pain, behavioral changes, paralysis, persistent seizure disorder --

Brooke: Oh, my god.

Dr. Sobel: Now those are possibilities. There are no probabilities right now. We just don't know. I've upped her anticonvulsive dosage. If we can keep her stable and get a normal EEG reading, that would be a very good sign. So would a clean scan in 24 hours.

Brooke: Okay, so what do we do until then, doctor?

Dr. Sobel: Just stay with her. Talk to her. Keep saying her name. "Hope" is a word we can't hear too much of right now.

[ Machine beeping ]

Nick: Hey, kiddo. It's Uncle Nick. I know you can't hear me right now, but I want you to know that the doctors and the nurses are doing everything they can to make you better. And your mom and me -- we're gonna be right here for you. 'Cause you're gonna be fine.

Brooke: Nick, I think you should go now.

Nick: We can take turns sitting with her.

Brooke: No, I want you to go. I don't want you anywhere near my daughter.

Stephanie: What a fool I've been. Knocking myself out all these years to protect. The dignity of the Forrester name for what? Just so you can turn around and make a joke of it again with her?

Eric: Who asked you to be the guardian of the Forrester family name!

Stephanie: We had four children in this house! Who are they supposed to look up to for standards? You?

Eric: At least they weren't scared of me. At least they didn't live in fear of me.

Stephanie: You never once led by example, Eric. Never! If you had, I wouldn't have been driven to the extremes that I was driven to keep this family intact.

Eric: Intact?! Where are they? Your daughters ran screaming into the night the first chance they got.

Stephanie: And the first chance you and the boys got, you were at Brooke, weren't you?

Eric: If Brooke Logan had never existed, you would've driven us all to somebody else.

Stephanie: Don't you dare tell me that I didn't know how to love you.

Eric: The only thing that your in love with is your idea of who we should all be. You have nothing to say to all the living, breathing people standing right in front of you except that we don't measure up, and it's made you into a bitter, angry woman. I deserve better. Our family deserves better.

Stephanie: Here! There, that's your family! That's what's left of your family because of your philandering and your indifference. Take that. Take that into your bright new day with Brooke.

Eric: Well, look at this. This is the family Forrester photo album. Gee, I hope you took all your pictures out of it. Because this is my family now. I'm leaving.

Stephanie: You bet your sweet ass your leaving! I'm glad you came by. Thanks for coming by and giving me a purpose.

Eric: Yeah, to make my life a living hell. You've been able to do that all these years without any practice at all.

Stephanie: Well hang on to your sewing machines and your new CEO, if you can.

Nick: Brooke?

Brooke: I don't want to discuss it. Please, just leave me alone with my little girl.

Brooke: Hey, sweetheart. It's mommy. Don't be frightened, okay? You have good doctors looking out after you. God will hear us. He always does.

Hush little baby don't you cry momma's going to sing you a lullaby hush little baby don't say a word momma's going to buy you a mockingbird and if that mockingbird don't sing momma's going to buy you a diamond ring

[ Broooke gasps ]

Brooke: Yes, honey. Honey, it's me. It's mommy. I'm right here. I'm right here. Hope!

[ Brooke sobs ]
