Nick: Thought I might find you here.

Brooke: Nick.

Nick: Bad time?

Brooke: No, actually, your timing is perfect. I'm about ready to tackle these long-term projections. So now I have a good reason to procrastinate. What's wrong?

Nick: I got some disturbing news last night.

Brooke: Is it about Massimo? Is he worse?

Nick: No. No worse.

Brooke: Thank god.

Nick: But he's the reason I'm here.

Brooke: What do you mean?

Nick: I found out what caused his stroke.

Brooke: What "caused" it? I don't understand. Did the doctors do more tests?

Nick: No. No more tests.

Brooke: Well, then how do you know?

Nick: My mother told me. It turns out they were arguing when he collapsed.

Brooke: Nick, I don't think an argument would --

Nick: About the fact she was seeing another man.

Brooke: What? Oh, no. How long has this been going on?

Nick: The only part that's clear is when he found out about it, he collapsed. Other than that, I don't really know if I can trust what she says.

Brooke: Yeah, I know what you mean.

Nick: She's my mother and I love her.

Brooke: Of course.

Nick: That's really not the reason I'm here. I need some information. You're the only one who can give it to me.

Brooke: Me?

Nick: The man that she was -- seeing -- was Deacon Sharpe.

                        ****************************************************************************************

Deacon: Morning.

Jackie: Oh, Deacon. What are you doing here?

Deacon: Well, I sort of followed you.

Jackie: You followed -- you know, some would call that stalking.

Deacon: Stalking is very misunderstood. Besides, I was -- I was just worried about you after last night and everything -- I just want to make sure you're okay. Nick came down on you after I left, didn't he?

Jackie: A little.

Deacon: Jackie, I'm so sorry about this. You know, this was supposed to be your night to go out and forget about all the guilt and just --

Jackie: Guilt -- I don't deserve to forget about it.

Deacon: Oh, come on, don't say that. That's ridiculous. What are you gonna say? You deserve to be miserable?

Jackie: I just wish that Nicky understood, I didn't mean to hurt Massimo.

Deacon: He does understand. Come on, give the guy a break. He's in shock. You know, he was -- lashing out.

Jackie: Speaking of which, how are you? Did he hurt you?

Deacon: I'm fine.

                        ***************************************************************************************

Audrey: Thanks for coming over, Dr. Whittman.

Dr. Whittman: I'm glad you called. Is his family around?

Audrey: I tried calling his son at work, but he wasn't there.

Dr. Whittman: Don't worry, we'll contact them if there's something to report. Now, tell me again, exactly what you saw Mr. Marone do?

                        *********************************************************************************

Thorne: That's right. We're called Spectra Couture by Thorne Forrester. Nope, they're all original. Oh. Well, if you read the reviews, then you must know how great our designs are. Yes, well, my team has hit the ground running. That's why I'm calling you. I wanted to follow up and make sure you'd get in on our inaugural launch. Okay, well, don't wait too long. I don't want your competitors to beat you to the punch. Okay, you got it. Bye. Damn it.

Darla: Still no luck, huh?

Thorne: I know the buyers like the line --

Darla: They're just not sure about the label.

Thorne: It's out now. The first line was all knock-offs.

Darla: Well, maybe your dad could possibly take out an ad in the trades. Saying how proud he is of what you've accomplished.

Thorne: No, honey, I have to do this on my own. We have the team. We have the designs. We have the critical acclaim. All we need is one retailer to take a chance on us.

Darla: Like Jackie M?

Thorne: Yes. If we landed that account, everyone else would follow 'em. I know it. I know it. Of course, I have to get Nick to return my phone calls.

Darla: Oh, come on, now. Patience, my love. Patience.

Thorne: You seem very calm about this.

Darla: Well, so should you. All of your hard work has already paid off. You got your dad's respect. And after seeing that, I am pretty convinced that you could do just about anything.

Darla: You know, honey, it really doesn't matter if the line sells. You know, not in the grand scheme of things. But what does matter is what you've accomplished with it.

Thorne: Tell ya, the line really opened dad's eyes.

Darla: Yeah, good. You know, I can not stop thinking about the way he talked to you after the fashion preview.

Thorne: I thought I'd never hear it. I had almost convinced myself that I didn't need to hear it.

Darla: He's your dad. You need him to believe in you.

Thorne: Ridge has had that his entire life. No wonder he's been able to accomplish so much.

Darla: Well, he got a head start. And you had to come from behind. And that just makes what you've accomplished even more impressive.

                        ************************************************************************************

Brooke: Deacon and Jackie? I just can't even picture it.

Nick: You know him better than most. I want to know if I need to be worried.

Brooke: Worried about what?

Nick: Worried about my mother.

Brooke: You think this is some kind of scam? That he's trying to take advantage of her?

Nick: I don't know. I have no idea what's going on.

Brooke: Well, what do they say?

Nick: He says he's in love with her.

                        ****************************************************************************************

Deacon: I know how hard this is for you. Look, I've got to tell you, if I was being really honest, there's a part of me that's really happy that the truth's finally come out. I mean, think about it. There's no more -- there's no more sneaking around. There's no more hiding. You know, we can spend every night like last night. The way it was at the Cafe Russe.

Jackie: Let's not get ahead of ourselves.

Deacon: Jackie, there's nothing to be afraid of. Everybody knows. The world ain't cavin' in.

Jackie: Well, maybe not your world.

Deacon: Your son loves you. I've seen just how much. He's freaked out, he doesn't want to lose you. He's already lost his father.

Jackie: Yes, because of us. Because of me.

Deacon: Listen to me, he is gonna forgive you. And one of these days, you're gonna wake up and you're gonna find that you've forgiven yourself. And when you do that, then you're gonna be ready to start the rest of your life. The rest of your life with me.

Jackie: I --

Deacon: Before you start giving me any of the stuff about, "it's over, and I can't do it because I'm committed to my husband," let me tell you something. That's the guilt talking. If it was your heart talking, and you were listening, you know, it would say something very, very different.

Jackie: I'm confused right now --

Deacon: No. No, I don't believe that. I don't think you're confused at all. I think you know exactly what it is that you want, and you're just afraid. Listen, Jackie, you've tried livin' your life for other people, okay. And it ain't working. Not for anybody. You could have so much more in life. And the fact of the matter is, you have. And I know you remember what it was like. Come on, think about how we would spend days out on the beach, spend nights making love.

Jackie: Deacon, please --

Deacon: Please, what? What do you want to do? Pretend? Pretend that I don't think about it, 'cause I know you do. Pretend that you don't want it back every bit as much as I do?

                        ********************************************************************************************

Dr. Whittman: Remarkable. Just remarkable.

                        *****************************************************************************************

Darla: You have proven yourself, baby. I know it, you know it, the world knows it. And now your father knows it.

Thorne: I realize that now.

Darla: And you know something else? I think the hard part is behind you, you know? Carrying around all those old wounds your whole entire life, trying to heal them.

Thorne: And you probably know that better than anyone, huh?

Darla: Yeah, yeah. Yeah, it's one thing to feel like nobody believes in you, but to find the strength to forge ahead, that takes courage. And I really think that's what opened up your dad's eyes, Thorne -- the guts that it took for you to stand up for yourself. And nothing can ever take that away. I bet that was one of the greatest moments of your life.

Thorne: It was definitely up there, but -- the greatest thing that has ever happened to me -- is you, honey -- you.

                        *******************************************************************************************

Deacon: Jackie, you and me, together -- honey, we can have it all.

Jackie: No, Deacon, we can't.

Deacon: Why? Says who? 'Cause you're afraid of what they're gonna write in some society column, or what Nick's gonna think? I don't give a damn what anyone thinks. The only thing that's important to me is what Jackie Payne thinks. So baby, I want you to tell me, what is it that you want?

Jackie: Marone. My name is Jackie Marone.

Deacon: Yeah, well, you know, I got to tell you, I've been giving that some very serious thought lately, and I was thinking that maybe it's time that we consider changing that.

Jackie: What?

Deacon: It's up to you, Jackie.

Jackie: You can't be suggesting that --

Deacon: Baby, it's all up to you. All I'm saying is that your life isn't over. It's just starting. Now, you can do whatever you want to do in this world, and you can do it with whoever you want to do it. It's all up to you.

                        ****************************************************************************************

Brooke: So Deacon is in love with your mother?

Nick: So he says.

Brooke: And you're not buying it?

Nick: I don't know. That's why I'm here. I want you to tell me everything you know can about this guy.

Brooke: You already know our history.

Nick: That he took advantage of you.

Brooke: Well, I wouldn't go that far.

Nick: You told me that he took advantage of you, that he takes advantage of vulnerable women, which is exactly what my mother is right now.

Brooke: I still made my own choices, and I certainly wouldn't blame Deacon for that. Besides, we were two different people back then.

Nick: Well, do you think he's changed?

Brooke: I don't know if he's done a 180, but I know that he gave up alcohol, which is no easy feat, and he really does adore his daughter.

Nick: Well, okay, he adores his daughter. It sounds like you're defending the guy.

Brooke: No, all I'm saying is I know he's capable of real feelings. Now, whether he's telling the truth about his feelings towards your mother or not, I don't know. But he could be. Do you think she loves him?

Nick: She didn't admit it to me, but of course, my father was laying there, unable to walk or talk. They're the reason I lost him.

Brooke: Nick, I'm so sorry.

Nick: It took them such a long time to find each other, it's hard to believe they could end like this.

[ Phone rings ]Nick: Hello.

Dr. Whittman: Nick, I'm here at your father's.

Nick: My father's? Why, did I miss an appointment.

Dr. Whittman: No, no, no, Audrey called me. She noticed his eyes blinking.

Nick: Well, that's normal.

Dr. Whittman: Well, I finished an examination, and there's something I'd like to show you.

Nick: What is it?

Dr. Whittman: I think it'd be better if I showed you in person. It's truly quite remarkable.

Nick: Yeah, of course. I'll be right over.

                        ***************************************************************************************

Thorne: If it weren't for you, I wouldn't have had the courage to take these risks.

Darla: I always knew you had it in you.

Thorne: You knew?

Darla: Yeah.

Thorne: And I always knew if I fell flat on my face, I'd still be the luckiest guy in the world, coming home to you.

Darla: Well, you know something? It's just a doggone shame you have to leave this house at all.

Thorne: Why, Darla Forrester, are you hitting on me?

Darla: Maybe.

Thorne: Honey, what about the distributors I have to call?

Darla: I'll tell you about those distributors.

Thorne: Oh, okay. I can call them later. Honey, I should be there for the ad meeting, though. Okay, Sally can handle that.

                        *********************************************************************************************

Jackie: I don't feel comfortable talking about you and me when Massimo is in this condition. It's --

Deacon: I know. I understand how important it is to be there for him. But Jackie, you have been. You've been amazing, the way that you've taken care of him. I just think it's time that you realized that sacrificing your life, your sense of happiness, it's just not gonna bring him back. Nothing is.

                        ****************************************************************************************

Nick: What is it?

Dr. Whittman: Nick, come here.

Nick: What are these?

Dr. Whittman: I'm performing a diagnostic test called an electroencephalograph, or EEG. The sensors measure electricity occurring within the cortex, or outer shell of the brain. Now, watch this. Mr. Marone, would you please open and close your eyes for us?

Nick: My god.

Dr. Whittman: See that? Now, I'll have more conclusive results once we have examined the data, but there is a definite cognitive response.

Nick: Pop? You know what's going on here? You hear me? You know I'm here? Come on, give me a sign. Give me a sign, something -- you just take your time. You take your time. We don't want to overdo it. He squeezed my hand. He squeezed -- he squeezed my hand.

Dr. Whittman: Mr. Marone, I know your father, as well as you, have been through a lot, but I'd like to recommend getting him to a specialist.

Nick: What specialist? What are you talking about?

Dr. Whittman: Dr. Ying. He has just flown in from China. He is on the cutting edge of some miraculous new procedures.

Nick: Do it. Whatever you have to do, do it.

Dr. Whittman: So I have your approval to get this under way?

Nick: I want him out of this house as soon as possible.

Dr. Whittman: May I use your phone?

Nick: It's in the study back up here. Pop, you're in there. I know you're in there. We're gonna get you everything you need -- everything you need, but you gotta do something for me. You gotta do something for me. You've got to come back. Please, come back. 'Cause I miss ya. I miss you.
