(last half of show was preempted for Senator Kerry’s speech)

Stephanie: Tom will be here any minute.

Rick: Well, I'd better get down to the pool then.

Brooke: Are you sure you want to go through with this?

Stephanie: He's fine with it.

Brooke: I was asking him.

Stephanie: And he just told you he wants to help tom.

Brooke: By hurting Amber?

Rick: Look, Mom, I'm not going to go overboard with this. I'm just going to soothe her ego a little bit.

Brooke: But you're going to lead her to believe that there's a chance for you two.

Rick: Yeah, but look, the point is, if she buys into this, it's proof that she's just rebounding with Thomas. Don't you think it's important for both of them to see that?

Brooke: So, we're be doing them both a favor, is that it?

Stephanie: Well, we won't be doing anybody a favor if he walks in the door and sees us together.

Rick: All right. Well, I'm out of here.

Stephanie: Don't get into the grand finale until you see us on the terrace.

Brooke: We could still call this off, you know.

Stephanie: All right, fine. What's your plan? Brooke, Tom is head over heels about Amber. And she's got a lot of influence on him. I believe she could talk him into running away and getting married.

Brooke: Oh, god. This just feels wrong.

[ Knock on door ]

Stephanie: Do you want to just stand by and do nothing? Tom. Thanks for coming.

Thomas: I hope I'm not going to regret this. But something tells me I already do. The two of you together could mean one only thing. It's bash on Thomas and amber day.

Stephanie: No, no. No lectures. Enough people have been coming down on you lately. That's not what this is about. Is it, Brooke?

Brooke: No. No, it isn't.

Thomas: So, why am I here?

Stephanie: Well, you're 18. You're going to make your own decisions. We just want to make sure that you have the correct information for making the correct decisions.

Rick: You shouldn't be doing that.

Amber: Hi --

Rick: I mean, you could get yourself into trouble.

Amber: For your information, I have permission to be here.

Rick: I know.

Amber: Okay, then why did you --

Rick: What I meant is, you shouldn't be designing in this light. Could hurt your eyes. But this should help. What?

Amber: I'm just waiting for the other shoe to drop.

Rick: The other shoe?

Amber: Yeah. You know, the one where you tell me that I'm taking advantage of Stephanie and her hospitality and that I have ten minutes to pack my bags and leave.

Rick: Amber, I'm glad that you're here.

Felicia: Well, you're handling this well.

Nick: What?

Felicia: My choice of restaurants. There's no smell of beer. There's no peanut shells on the floor. There's no six dollar burger.

Nick: You're treating, remember? Besides, I guess I got to get used to these stuffed shirt places.

Felicia: Well, I guess it wouldn't do for the acting head of Narone industries to take a million dollar account rep to Chuck's.

Nick: Well, maybe I can talk them into putting a dartboard up some place.

Felicia: Yeah. That would really liven the place up. I wish your mother was here.

Nick: She's having a tough time.

Felicia: I know. I'm sure that this has been very difficult. And she has a lot ahead of her. It's got to be overwhelming.

Nick: She's always been a fighter, though. A survivor.

Felicia: But she's never been through anything like this before. You know, your father's gone, but he's not gone.

Nick: Still, though, something doesn't add up.

Jackie: Oh, Massimo, what have I done to you?

[ Knock on door ]

Deacon: Jackie, you ready?

Jackie: I'm not going.

Deacon: I thought that we had agreed --

Jackie: I changed my mind.

Deacon: You know, punishing yourself, keeping yourself cooped up like this -- none of this is going to bring him back. Come on, Jackie, listen to me for a second, okay? Do you remember what we talked about? All the people at Jackie-M who count on you for a paycheck? These people, they need you to be at the top of your game. Your son needs you to be at the top of your game. Jackie, I hate to say this, but, I mean, frankly, come on, you're the only parent he has right now. You owe it to him.

Jackie: Claudette knows where to reach us in case there's an emergency?

Deacon: But there isn't going to be one. The night nurse gave him his sedative. He's going to sleep like a baby.

Jackie: Well, I don't suppose there's any harm in just going out for something to eat.

Deacon: Nah, there's no harm at all. Jackie?

Thomas: I don't want to talk about Amber.

Stephanie: Neither do I. So, how's school? Classes? You know, hanging out? Just, you know, going to the basketball games, football games -- oh, isn't what's her name -- that pop girl -- isn't she on the cheerleading team?

Thomas: I get it. You wanted me to come over here so you could play matchmaker. Try to interest me in girls my own age.

Brooke: Well, she is cute.

Thomas: Fine, you date her then. I'm going to go see Amber.

Stephanie: She's not in the guest house.

Thomas: Is she in the study?

Stephanie: No. Honey, just listen to me for a moment, please. I know you're probably not going to believe me, but if you would just try to hear me. I love Amber. She's very, very special to me. It's just that there are times that I don't trust her. What I've learned is that sometimes, she doesn't display the wisdom and strength of character to make the right decisions.

Thomas: So I'm just too young and inexperienced, right? I should just let you take control and make all the decisions, that's what you're saying?

Stephanie: Tom.

Thomas: What about you? What do you think about this? Do you think we should just let grandma run the whole show? Where would you be if you'd done that? Not with my dad, that's for sure.

Brooke: Please don't compare me to Amber, Thomas.

Thomas: Look, I told you guys, I didn't want to come over here and have a conversation like this. All right, I don't want you talking about Amber anymore.

Amber: Have you been drinking?

Rick: Just because I said I'm glad you're here?

Amber: I thought me being in Furnace Creek was too close for you?

Rick: This is your home.

Amber: Used to be.

Rick: Does it bring back any memories?

Amber: Lots of them.

Rick: Yeah, we had some pretty good times when we were here, didn't we?

Amber: Yeah, we had some good days.

Rick: And nights.

Amber: Seems like so long ago now.

Rick: Really? I remember it like it was just yesterday. Looking out the window, watching you by the pool. The way the water reflected off your body. And then when the sun warmed you up, you'd stretch out on that towel. And bask in it like you'd found a little piece of heaven.

Amber: I thought I had.

Rick: You did. So did I. And believe it or not, I miss it, Amber. I miss what we had.

Amber: Um, what is all this about?

Nick: Thanks for getting me out tonight.

Felicia: Listen, you got me through a tough time. I'd like to return the favor. And as far as your mother goes --

Nick: Yes, what about my mother?

Felicia: Well, you know, I mean, I could try to reach out to her. I mean, I do have experience with the maternal figure -- try to break down the walls.

Nick: That would be nice. I'd appreciate that. I will take all the help I can get. Deacon was going to try to talk to her tonight.

Felicia: You know, I'm really curious about this Deacon guy.

Nick: Why's that?

Felicia: Well, your opinion of him and Ridge's opinion of him couldn't be further apart.

Nick: That's because your brother's a pig-headed mule.

Felicia: Oh, really? Oh, and you're open-minded?

Nick: That's right. I believe in giving people a second chance. As long as they're walking the walk, and I believe Deacon is.

Felicia: Oh, um -- isn't that your mother?

Nick: Yes, it is.

Maitre d': It's so nice to see you again, Mrs. Marone. We were all very sorry to hear about your husband.

Jackie: Thank you, jerry.

Maitre d': Shall I take you to your --

Jackie: You can seat us anywhere.

Maitre d': Please, right this way.

Felicia: That's Deacon?

Nick: Yeah. I couldn't even get her out for burgers. Wonder what his secret is. Carrot juice,

Felicia: They still haven't noticed us.

Nick: What's she doing now?

Felicia: She's putting her napkin on her lap.

Nick: She smiling?

Felicia: Why don't you just go over and say hello?

Nick: Because I don't want her to think that she's under a microscope.

Jackie: This is so surreal.

Deacon: Well, that's because these are all sounds you haven't heard in a while. There's music and people laughing. You know, things that exist in the real world. And I just thought maybe it was about time you reconnected with it.

Jackie: Maybe you could make a recording and I could listen to it whenever forget. You know, like one of those machines that play white noise and the sounds of the ocean.

Deacon: Been a while since you've heard that, too.

Jackie: I miss it.

Deacon: I know, me, too. Oh, here we go. I thought you might be missing a few other things, so --

Waiter: Your root beer, sir.

Deacon: Very good.

Jackie: Root beer?

Waiter: In the bottle, just as you ordered. And spotted dick.

Deacon: Don't knock it till you've tried it.

Waiter: Not in this lifetime.

Deacon: You see, some guys, they just don't know how to have good time. I don't know, I try, so --

Jackie: Thank you for reminding me that I once did.

Deacon: Listen to me. You will again. I promise you, if I have anything to do about it.

Stephanie: All right, you're angry with me.

Thomas: Grandma, I know you're looking out for me -- or at least trying to -- but I don't need protection from Amber. She loves me and she's committed to me. She's not going to do anything to hurt me.

Stephanie: I'm sure she doesn't want to.

Thomas: But she's not going to be able to help herself? Come on.

Stephanie: You're right, we shouldn't discuss this.

Thomas: Thank you. And no trying to set me up with anybody, either. That goes for both of you. I'm a one-woman man.

Stephanie: You've made that very clear.

Thomas: Good. Now where's Amber?

Stephanie: Oh, she's down at the pool. With Rick.

Rick: I've said some pretty harsh stuff to you about you and Thomas.

Amber: And you and me.

Rick: I'm sorry. And, you know, I'll understand if you can't forgive me.

Amber: What's to forgive? You were just telling it like it was. You know, you did better with Caitlin.

Rick: Yeah, don't rub it in.

Amber: Rub what in?

Rick: Oh, I thought Stephanie would've said something.

Amber: About what?

Rick: Caitlin and me.

Amber: Are you -- are you guys having problems?
