Amber: It's okay. It's okay. Being spied on is part of the deal here, right?

Stephanie: Oh. You know what I just realized?

Amber: That I'm ruining your grandson's life?

Stephanie: Oh, well -- that I've missed you. This is the most amount of time I've seen you since you were married to Rick.

Amber: Yeah. Those were some of the best times of my life. And you don't have to remind me that I was the one who blew it. I know. But I've accepted it. And I've moved on. And so has Rick.

Stephanie: How do you feel about that?

Amber: I want Rick to be happy.

Stephanie: You think Caitlin's the right person for him to be dating?

Amber: Stephanie. Rick was a hugely important part of my past. But "past" is the key word. I'm a different person now. Especially when I'm with Thomas. And you know what? I really like the new Amber. I do. And I think you would, too, if you would just give her a chance.

Stephanie: I hope so.

Amber: Now, if you'll excuse me, I really want to finish this design. So think I'm gonna go hang out by the pool.

Stephanie: Okay. Take a swim, you know. It's heated.

Amber: Thanks. Stephanie?

Stephanie: Mm-hmm.

Amber: Did you really like the design?

Stephanie: Very much. You're gonna be a big asset to Spectra.

Amber: Well, maybe someday you'll see me as an asset to the family, too. Good night.

                        **************************************************************************************

[ Knock on door ]

Stephanie: Perfect timing.

Brooke: Maybe for you. I would really like to get home and see R.J. And the girls. Now that I'm working, I don't get to see enough of them. So what's this about?

Stephanie: Tom and Amber.

                        ***************************************************************************************

Nick: You really haven't left his side since he's been back from the hospital. I don't really think he would begrudge you and I going out for a meal. It's not necessarily about going out, Mother, it's more about focus. You need to focus on yourself. You need to think of yourself or Jackie-M. You and Deacon were supposed to open a home office here and start working here --

Jackie: It's not that easy.

Nick: Well, no, no, of course, I understand that, but -- he bought you this line of boutiques. It was the last thing he did before he had his stroke. And if he could, he would tell you to dive into these stores and make them your own. Can't you do it for him? For me? I feel like I'm losing you. And I need you.

Jackie: No, you don't.

Nick: I need you.

Jackie: I'm like a curse on this family, Nicky.

Nick: Why are you saying that?

Jackie: You go downstairs and you look at your father and then you tell me that I'm not.

Nick: You didn't put him in that wheelchair, mother. Why are you blaming yourself?

                        *********************************************************************************************

Deacon: We have increased brainwave activity, huh? Now, what exactly was Dr. Whitman talking about, 'cause I gotta tell you, I sure as hell don't see it. And, of course, he didn't see fit to tell me what or how much or how long before it shows up, which actually is a real big help there -- thanks, doc, I appreciate that one. I'll tell you, though, if there is anything going on back there, man, and I was you, I would be furious.

Massimo: You can't begin

to imagine.

Deacon: I mean, here I am, I'm living with your wife, I'm living in your mansion. I'm collecting a Marone paycheck. I mean, man, if I was you -- and let's be honest, I'm very happy that I'm not -- I would be just --

[ Deacon grunts ] I'd be insane. I would also be trying to signal somebody. Is that what all this sort of -- that stuff is about? You know, what were you doing? Were you sending morse code to Stephanie and Ridge? Is that what that was? Okay, this is ridiculous. I'm being completely paranoid here. You're gone. You're out of it. You've taken a left turn to vegetable city, pal, and you ain't coming back.

Deacon: Well, Dr. Whitman might not have declared you incompetent.

Yet. But let's face it there, il duce. You are.

[ Massimo growls ]

Massimo: How's that for a signal, you rotten son of a bitch?

[ Deacon gagging and coughing ] huh? Go on! Beg! Beg! You low-life, miserable, crawling bug!

Nick: Hey. How ya feeling today, pop? Hey, pop, what's goin' on?

Massimo: Just planning

my first order of business

when I get out of

this chair.

                        *********************************************************************************

Amber: Oops. Forgot to draw the swimsuit.

Brooke: So you didn't convince Amber to break up with Thomas yet?

Stephanie: No. And it's -- it's gonna take more than just conversation. I've gotta make them understand it's -- it's just an infatuation.

Brooke: So how do you propose we do that?

Stephanie: Tom is involved with amber, right, because he's on the rebound. And that's because Rick took Caitlin away from him.

Brooke: Well, he didn't exactly take her.

Stephanie: That's how tom sees it. What I see is that Rick is the love of Amber's life and always will be.

Brooke: So?

Stephanie: Well, if we could get Tom to witness that sort of feeling that she has for him, if he could come to understand that she'd go back to Rick in a heartbeat if she was given the chance.

Brooke: So that's your plan? Getting my son involved with Amber again?

Stephanie: Actually, I thought they might get married and move in with you.

Brooke: What?

Stephanie: I'm just kidding. What I would like is for Rick to convince amber that he has feelings for her. Then she might she reveal that she has feelings for him.

Brooke: No! No! I don't like it. And I definitely don't want my son mixed up with your silly schemes.

Stephanie: Too late.

Brooke: No, no no no no no no no no !

                        *********************************************************************************

Deacon: Hey, Nick, did you talk to your mom? Is she gonna go out to dinner with you?

Nick: I can't even get her over the boat for a bite to eat. She's gotta get out of this house. She's gotta get out of here.

Massimo: Yes,

out of this house

and away from

Deacon Sharpe.

Deacon: This might sound weird, but do you want me to try?

Nick: Absolutely. Whatever you can do will be fine.

Deacon: I gotta tell you, I just think that her being cooped up in this house with your dad the way he is like this, 24 four hours a day, that's gotta be getting to her.

Nick: Whatever you can do is fine -- a walk around the block, anyway. I don't wanna say it, but she's gotta move on.

Massimo: No, no.

That's just what he wants

to hear.

Deacon: I don't need to tell you that your mother's an amazing lady. She's going to get through this, I promise you, if I have anything to do with it.

Nick: Listen, you've been a good friend to her. She appreciates it.

Massimo: Good friend?

He seduced her.

He's after your mother.

Nick: So anything I can do for you, you just ask.

Deacon: I just want to see things in this housework out the way they're supposed to.

Nick: Take care, pop. See ya.

Deacon: Well, now, what do you make of that, pop? Even your own kid thinks that Jackie ought to be moving on. And why the hell shouldn't it be with me? God knows I treated her a lot better than you ever did.

Massimo: You contemptible

gigolo.

You are not going to

get away with this.

                        **********************************************************************************

[ Phone rings ]

Amber: Hello?

Thomas: Hey, sexy.

Amber: Hey you. What's shakin'?

Thomas: Just my government book. You wanna change that?

Amber: I'm actually getting a lot of work done here at the house.

Thomas: All right. All right. That's cool. So it's not too weird being back where you used to live with Rick?

Amber: You know what? The only memories I care about are the ones I'm going to be making here with you. Because I am totally crazy in love with you.

Thomas: Oh, right back at you.

Amber: You know, I know you're kind of new to this thing, but does that really count?

Thomas: Okay. Okay, fine. I love you, Ambrosia Moore. How's that?

Amber: Perfect.

                        ***********************************************************************************

Brooke: I can't believe she's convinced you that this is a good idea.

Rick: Mom. Amber could have been pregnant. Right now, Thomas could be going through the same thing that I went through.

Brooke: I know. And I hate that, too. But --

Rick: But I can do something about it.

Brooke: Honey, this isn't you. You're not a liar. You don't toy with people's feelings.

Rick: Look, I understand why you're upset about this. The same kind of thing has been done to you, and it doesn't seem fair. And it's not fair. Okay? It's not, but damn it, I can't think of a better way to protect Thomas. And I can't -- god, Mom, I cannot let him go through the same thing that I went through.

Stephanie: Amber will be better off in the long run, as well.

Brooke: She'll probably see right through you, anyway.

Rick: No, I'm gonna make sure that she doesn't.

Brooke: How?

Stephanie: Well, we thought we'd stage it by the pool. Tonight.

                        ***********************************************************************************

[ Knock on door ]

Jackie: Claudette, I told you, I'm not hungry.

Deacon: It's not Claudette, it's me.

Jackie: Deacon, I can't -- just go away, please. Deacon? Wait.

Deacon: Sure.

Jackie: I'm out of my sedatives. Could you arrange for a refill please?

Deacon: Yeah, I could, but I'm not going to. I told you, Jackie, no more pills.

Jackie: What?

Deacon: This isn't what you need to get through this.

Jackie: How would you know what I need?

Deacon: I know, because I love you.

Jackie: No, you don't love me. You can't love me.

Deacon: Yes, I do. Jackie, if you can just let the world come in for one minute, you'd see what a beautiful place it could be.

Jackie: This isn't right.

Deacon: I know that you're not ready for anything heavy. And I don't want to push you. But, come on, you have to remember, I am your friend. I just -- I want to be that for you.

Jackie: I don't deserve anything from anybody. Not after what I've done to Massimo. I have taken away every shred of strength and dignity that he ever had.

Deacon: I appreciate your sense of duty. I even -- I even applaud your misplaced sense of guilt. You're such a compassionate person, and that's what I love about you. That's what makes you who you are. But Jackie, please, enough. I mean, I understand that Massimo is your top priority, but you've got other responsibilities. To yourself, your boutiques, to nick.

Jackie: He's upset with me, I know.

Deacon: No, he's not. He's just -- he's worried about you.

Jackie: Deacon, please, just one more refill on the tranquilizers, okay?

Deacon: Hmm. I'm gonna have to go with no on that, but I do have a better prescription. What would you say to a night out with me. Just the two of us, just friends, friends -- promise. You could relax, forget everything.

Jackie: I can't even imagine what that would be like.

Deacon: I don't know, something like --

[ imitating Jackie ] "Oh, Deacon, wherever shall we go for dinner?"

Jackie: I do not sound like that.

[ Imitating Jackie ]

Deacon: "Oh, you certainly do, darling, you certainly do." See, there -- right there, I saw it. There was a little bit of a smile, wasn't it? You were just a little bit amused, weren't you?

[ Imitating Jackie ] "Shall we celebrate with a lovely spotted dick?" Does that laugh mean that you're gonna come with me?

Jackie: Only if you promise you're never gonna use that voice again.

[ Imitating Jackie ]

Deacon: "No, no, I can't do that."

Jackie: Okay.

Deacon: You gonna get me?

Jackie: Okay, that's it. That's it! That's it!

Deacon: I don't remember the two of us laughing like this since -- I know, we were down at the beach.

Jackie: That was a happy time.

Deacon: Yeah. You're gonna have them again, I promise.

Jackie: Thank you.

Deacon: Come here.

                        ***********************************************************************************

Brooke: Pretty ironic, isn't it? Me defending Amber against the two of you?

Stephanie: Yes, it is. Brooke, she's changed a lot, all right? And one of these days, she's gonna be all grown up and ready for a grown-up relationship. But not now. Not this one. Not Tom. He's just a boy.

Rick: I mean, mom, Amber's not even serious about him. She's just convinced herself that she is. Isn't it better for Thomas to find out now? Because the longer it takes, the more disastrous this is going to be for everybody.

Brooke: I know.

Stephanie: All right, then? I'll call Tom. I'll tell him to come over.

[ Phone rings ]

Thomas: Hello?

Stephanie: Tom?

Thomas: Grandma. What's up?

Stephanie: Hi, honey. I was hoping you'd come over to the house.

Thomas: Tonight?

Stephanie: Yes. I want to talk to you about something. It's kind of important to me.

Thomas: It's about Amber?

Stephanie: No. Not necessarily.

Thomas: Okay. See you soon.

Stephanie: Tom is on his way.

Rick: You know, I really hate to do this to the guy.

Stephanie: Honey, aren't you simply trying to keep him from going through what you did?

[ Rick sighs ]

Rick: I know what I have to do. And when I'm through with Amber, Thomas is gonna wish that he had never met her.
