[ Phone rings ]

Deacon: Hello?

Jackie: I do not feel good about this.

Deacon: Jackie, somehow I'm getting the feeling that maybe you're not a morning person.

[ Jackie scoffs ]

Jackie: Not when it comes to lying to my son, no.

Deacon: Well, what exactly would you call admitting the information about the paternity test?

Jackie: Perpetrating what I already know is the truth -- that Nicky is the father.

Deacon: You know, you've got to stop deluding yourself here and the only way to be certain is to re-run the paternity test.

Jackie: And for that, I need to get one of Nicky's hairs.

Deacon: Just stop making a big deal about this. You just, you know -- fuss, pluck and pull.

Jackie: Yeah, well, that's easy for you to say, isn't it? When you are not the one on this ridiculous mission.

Deacon: Excuse me, I'm not just sitting around here twiddling my thumbs. I've got the difficult part. I gotta get Brooke's medical records. Speaking of which, what is the name of her new doctor?

Jackie: Why would you think I would know such a thing?

Deacon: Jackie --

Jackie: Dr. Dennis Sobel.

Deacon: Sobel. Good. Now I can get to work.

Jackie: Deacon, what exactly are you going to do?

Deacon: Jackie, listen to me. I want you to take a deep breath, relax, and focus on the task at hand. 'Cause I've got a feeling things might get a little bit hairy.

Jimmy: About time you woke up.

Caitlin: Good morning, Jimmy.

Jimmy: For you, birthday girl.

Caitlin: Oh, thanks. How sweet.

Jimmy: I know I wrap a mean gift, but that doesn't mean you can't rip it open.

Caitlin: Okay. Oh, Jimmy, it's beautiful. Jimmy, do you believe in god?

Jimmy: Um -- sure, I do.

Caitlin: I don't know if I do -- believe, that is. I mean, if god was really watching out for us, why would he take your parents away?

Jimmy: And your mom? I know what you mean. On days like today, it's hard for me to make sense of it, too.

Hector: Today is the first day of the rest of our lives together. You, me, our daughter -- it's going to be wonderful.

Samantha: What if it isn't?

[ Nick mumbling ]

Nick: Can't even read a map! Mother?

Jackie: Hi, Nicky.

Nick: What are you -- I know why you're here.

Jackie: You do?

Nick: The old man told you about our talk, didn't he?

Jackie: Yes, he did. He did.

Nick: Figured.

Jackie: Oh, I had absolutely no idea that you were even thinking of taking the family name.

Nick: Well, you never know what us Marones have up our sleeves.

Jackie: Darling, having you and his grandson carry on the family name, I cannot tell you what that means to your father. And I'm delighted, too.

Nick: Did he tell you what he wants me to name my son?

Jackie: Yep. Dominick, Jr.

Nick: What do you think?

Jackie: Me? I'm quite partial to the name. The question is, what do you think?

[ Nick sighs ]

Caitlin: Every time my birthday comes around, I feel like I'm being tested. How can I possibly celebrate the day that I was born knowing that it's the same day that my mother passed away?

Jimmy: Well, if your mom's anything like you, she'd want you to enjoy every minute of it.

Caitlin: Thanks, Jimmy. That's sweet of you to say. But, honestly, I'd rather just have it be over with.

Jimmy: If it weren't for me, mom would still be alive. And dad wouldn't have lost the love of his life.

Hector: Are you having second thoughts?

Samantha: No, no, not at all. Oh, my god. Caitlin has thought that her mother's dead her whole life, and we're going to show up and say, "Hey, honey, we're home. Guess what? Mom's alive."

Hector: Samantha, Caitlin's a strong and resilient young lady, just like her mother. She'll see that this is the best thing that's ever happened to her. You know, since she was a little girl, she's had these recurring dreams.

Samantha: About her mother holding her in her arms. I know. Caitlin told me about them.

Hector: She did? She's never told anybody about those dreams, except Jimmy and me.

Samantha: Who's jimmy?

Hector: Oh, my adopted son.

Samantha: Wow. Whoo, any more surprises?

Hector: You never know.

Samantha: Um -- do Caitlin and jimmy get along?

Hector: Like gangbusters.

Samantha: I hope they accept me.

Hector: Of course they will. I mean, Caty's already told me how much she enjoys working with you.

Samantha: Yeah, well, being her boss is one thing. Being her mother is quite another.

Hector: She said you understand her in a way that no one else ever has. She feels this connection to you.

Samantha: Yeah, I felt it, too.

Hector: So, you see? It's not like you're just some stranger walking into her life. The two of you already share a special bond. And today she's going to find out why.

Jackie: Well? Dominick, Jr. -- Yea or nay?

Nick: To be honest with you, I'm kinda in shock.

Jackie: What about?

Nick: I really thought the old man would want to name the kid Massimo Marone the sixth, the eighth or whatever the number is.

Jackie: Darling, darling, don't you see it just goes to show you how much Massimo thinks of you? He thinks the world of you. He is so puffed up about becoming a grandfather, I think he's going to burst, actually.

Nick: What about grandma? How do you feel about having another little Nicky running around?

Jackie: I couldn't be happier.

Nick: Well, I never I thought I'd say this, but I kinda like the idea of having a junior.

[ Jackie laughs ]

Jackie: You do?

Nick: Can you believe it? This kid's really got me going. It's changed my life already. Speaking of changes, I've noticed that you haven't been yourself lately. Mother, you want to tell me what's going on?

Hector: We're giving Caitlin what she's been missing her whole life -- her mother. And nothing you say or do today can diminish that.

Samantha: What about you, Hector?

Hector: I have never been better.

Samantha: Caitlin could be angry with you, you know? She thought I was dead. How is she going to feel when she finds out that her father who she adores has lied to her, her entire life?

Hector: I've thought about it for years. What would I do if Caitlin ever found out? And I promised myself that I would tell her the truth. And that's exactly how I'm going to handle it, for better, for worse.

[ Samantha sighs ]

Samantha: I hope it's for the better.

Hector: Samantha, we're good people that did the best we could under the circumstances. Your mother is the one to blame for all this. We're all victims of her manipulations. And you and Caitlin were in the same boat. You were being lied to. Each one of you believing that the other one was dead.

Samantha: Longing for each other.

Hector: But let's not dwell on what we've lost, okay? Let's just look at this like it's a chance to make up for all that.

Samantha: You make it sound so easy.

Hector: Well, it might not be easy but at least we're together on it.

Samantha: Well, how is this going to work, exactly?

Hector: What?

Samantha: Us, being a family. Am I just going to come over one night and cook dinner and -- ta-da! We're a family?

[ Hector laughs ]

Hector: Could be. Or maybe I'll cook dinner. It doesn't matter. The most important thing is that we are a family. And everything else will work itself out.

Samantha: I tend to get a little ahead of myself sometimes.

Hector: Let's not lose sight of the most amazing gift we're about to give our daughter. Nothing but good can come from what we're about to do. Caitlin is going to be so happy to have a mom in her life.

Jackie: There's a lot going on with me, actually.

Nick: I'm all ears.

Jackie: Where to start? I have a wonderful husband. I am going to be a grandmother, not to mention a mother-in-law. But I have so many blessings, I don't know -- I feel guilty.

Nick: So, that's what's going on with you?

Jackie: Mm-hmm.

Nick: Then why are you always acting so jittery?

Jackie: Jittery?

Nick: Yeah, jittery.

Jackie: Brooke -- I've been very, very worried about Brooke, darling. But now you're engaged, got a wedding to plan for. Oh, I couldn't be happier.

Nick: You sure?

Jackie: Yep, positive. Everything's back on track. You know, it feels like a big weight has just been lifted off my shoulders.

Nick: Good.

Jackie: And it warms my heart, actually, to see you so content.

[ Jackie laughs ] Look how handsome you are when you smile. Oh, my goodness, is that a gray hair I see?

Nick: I don't know, mother. I don't pay attention. Ow! Ow!

Jackie: Sorry. I'm just too young to have a son who's going gray.

Nick: Well, if you keep that up, I'll be going bald.

[ Phone rings ]Nick: Excuse me. Yeah. All right, hang on.

[ Jackie whispering ]

Jackie: I'm just doing what's best for you, Nicky. That's all I've ever done -- what's best for you.

Hector: Okay, we're gonna go over there and explain everything to Caitlin and see what happens, okay?

Samantha: I think we need some kind of strategy. I think we need to just take this slowly and logically and give her time to process everything.

Hector: Same old Sam, the girl with the plan.

Samantha: I just really want this to go well. What we say and how we say it is going to make all the difference.

Hector: You really haven't changed, have you? Still thinking about everybody else first. It's one of the things that was -- is so special about you.

Samantha: Well, that hasn't changed either.

Hector: Let's go see our daughter.

[ Samantha laughs ]

Nick: Yeah. No, no, I see it. I'll be right down. Sorry, mother, duty calls.

Jackie: That's okay, darling. We'll talk about wedding plans later, okay?

Nick: Okay.

[ Jackie sighs ]

[ Phone rings ]

Deacon: Yeah?

Jackie: I did it. I plucked the hair.

Deacon: You see? I told you, I told you, you're a natural at this.

Jackie: So, what do we do now?

Deacon: Get your butt over here. I'm gonna show you.

Caitlin: Thank you, Jimmy. Not just for the necklace but for reminding me what a great family I have. I'm probably a lot luckier than most.

Jimmy: Like dad always tells me, it's okay to miss the things you don't have, but don't let it get in the way of the things that you do have.

Caitlin: Very wise man -- but don't tell him I said that.

Jimmy: Oh, speaking of dad, I forgot. I promised him I'd get him some ice cream for the party.

Caitlin: Okay, well, if we have to have a party, we might as well pig out.

Jimmy: That's my girl.

[ Caitlin laughs ] Bye.

Samantha: She's so beautiful.

Hector: Like I said, just like her mother.

Samantha: All right, we just have to take this slowly. We'll just sit her down and explain to her what happened and then just let her take her time.

Hector: Agreed. Come on, let's go meet your daughter.

Caitlin: Dad, you're home.

Hector: And I'm not alone.

Caitlin: Samantha, how sweet of you to come. Is this my birthday surprise?

Samantha: Happy birthday, Caitlin.

[ Samantha sobbing ] My sweet baby.
