Jenna: But I don't understand. Why have you come back?

Felicia: Luke and I have come to take you home with us.

[Clock chiming]

Sam: Happy New Year, Amanda.

Amanda: Sam.

[Clock continues to chime]

Paulina: Ah, let me go! Let go of me, you witch!

Iris: [Groans] Aah! All right, you -- ah, no, no, no!

Paulina: You asked for this, lady!

Iris: No, no! Let me go! Oh, oh!

Paulina: How does it feel?

Iris: I'll tell you how it feels! Ah! Oh, God!

[Noisemakers sounding]

Iris: Midnight.

[Crowd cheering]

Paulina: New Year's!

Iris: Oh, don't just stand there; get up. We don't want them to know where we are.

Paulina: Oh, my God.

Iris: Oh, my God.

[People cheering]

["Auld Lang Syne" plays]

Paulina: You ripped my dress.

Iris: The stocking's ripped, too.

Paulina: We can't go out there like this.

Iris and Paulina: Makeup.

Iris: That's what we need. You got some makeup?

Paulina: Ok, ok. What do I have?

Iris: What have you got? What have you got?

Paulina: Eyeliner.

Iris: Oh, could I have it? Good, give it to me.

Paulina: No lipstick.

Iris: I've got lipstick. Have a look in there and see if I've got lipstick. You know what I need? Ohh... I need some mascara.

Paulina: No mascara.

Iris: What have you got? Have you got shadow?

Paulina: Eye shadow.

Iris: What color?

Paulina: Brown.

Iris: Have you got gray?

Paulina: Lavender.

Iris: Lavender? Who on earth uses lavender?

Paulina: I like lavender.

Iris: Oh, you would.

Paulina: Shut up.

Iris: You shut up! Gosh, here, look at my hair. See if you can fix the back --

Paulina: Your hair is hopeless, Iris. Fix my dress.

Iris: [Laughs] Your dress is --

Paulina: Hurry!

Iris: I can't fix your dress. The button is broken.

Paulina: I don't believe this. My dress! My million-dollar dress! How could you do this to me?

Iris: What about this? I've got powder everywhere on this.

Paulina: Forget it.

[Noisemakers sounding]

Taylor: Something wrong, Congressman?

Grant: No.

Taylor: You look distressed.

Grant: I don't know what you have to be so smug about, Taylor.

Taylor: My, my, we are so hostile!

Grant: You know, you lose just as much as I do. Neither one of us has what we wanted.

Taylor: Can't win 'em all.

Grant: People actually pay you to hear that drivel?

Taylor: I didn't come over here to pick a fight with you, Grant.

Grant: No, you came over here because you're dateless and feeling conspicuous about it.

Taylor: Speak for yourself. I can handle this.

Grant: You should have grabbed John when you had the chance. Too bad you're too uptight to seize the advantage.

Taylor: You're wrong about me, Grant. I'm not as uptight as you think.

Ken: Happy New Year, John.

John: I'm sure it will be for all of us.

Rachel: Oh, it's so good to have you home!

Sharlene: Thank you. It's so good to be here and see everybody.

Matt: I tell you, you have that pregnant glow --

Sharlene: Oh, Matthew.

Matt: You know that glow they're always talking about.

Sharlene: Stop, I have that glow?

Matt: It's that glow.

Sharlene: Yes, and I have that stomach that goes on forever.

John: What you have is a lot of beauty.

Sharlene: I also happen to be lucky enough to be married to the most wonderful partner.

Rachel: Well, I hope you're going to be very happy.

Ken: Yeah.

Sharlene: Thank you.

Rachel: And you know, we're going to have to get together.

Sharlene: Anytime. Actually, that's all I have time to do these days, is get together, so I'd love to, please.

Rachel: Well, I'll call, ok?

Sharlene: Ok.

Rachel: Matthew, look.

Matt: What?

Rachel: The Italian professor.

Ken: Oh, the one who tells you you talk too much in class?

Matt: Hey, oh, oh, oh. I'm going out on the terrace. Arrivederci.

Rachel: Let's go over and say hello.

Ken: I want to meet this guy.

Rachel: Excuse us.

Ken: So long.

Sharlene: Ok, bye. It really is. It's so good to be here and see everybody.

John: Are you sure you're all right?

Sharlene: Don't I look all right?

John: I mean about seeing Grant. I had no idea that he would be here.

Sharlene: John, I'm going to run into Grant from time to time. I'm not going to run away from him.

John: You're not going to run away from me, either. I'm going to make sure of that.

Sharlene: Mmm. Fine with me.

John: What do you say we just stay here just like this all night long?

Sharlene: That's also fine with me.

Rachel: Where have you two been?

Paulina: In the powder room.

Iris: Talking.

Rachel: Well, you missed the ringing-in of the New Year.

Iris: Well, there'll be other years.

Rachel: Are you serious?

Iris: No, I'm completely frivolous. This has been an incredible evening. Such fun.

Rachel: Wait, uh --

Iris: What's wrong?

Rachel: Her hair is different. Your hair was down when you came in. What's going on?

Iris: Like I said, it's a New Year.

Amanda: [Gasps] Sam.

Sam: Come on, don't do this to yourself.

Amanda: You came looking for me.

Sam: Yeah, I couldn't stand to see you so unhappy, not tonight.

Amanda: I deserve to be unhappy.

Sam: I don't believe that anymore, and you shouldn't either.

Amanda: I've made so many mistakes.

Sam: And you have suffered enough for it. When are you going to stop being so hard on yourself about this?

Amanda: What are you saying?

Sam: It's a New Year, and I think it's time we forgive each other.

Amanda: Can you forgive me?

Sam: I can't predict where 1991 is going to take the two of us, and I can't say I love you, but I do understand.

Amanda: Sam.

Sam: And I do forgive you, Amanda.

Amanda: You don't know how much I've wanted to hear you say that.

[Knock on door]

Amanda: [Sighs] [Sniffs] Come in. Sam, uh --

Jenna: You want me to come and stay at your house?

Felicia: Well, it's not really a house; it's an apartment. But there's plenty of room, and there's a view that just won't quit. So, what do you think?

Jenna: Well, I don't know.

Felicia: Well, it's -- it's just a thought. I mean, if you'd rather stay here, I would understand. I don't want to push you at all.

Jenna: No, no, you're not pushing at all. Well, it's just that... I'd love to stay with you.

Felicia: You would? Oh, that's great, that's great. Then I guess it's all settled.

Jenna: I guess this will give me a chance to see where you create all these wonderful stories.

Felicia: Well, it's just a corner of a room with a desk and an old beat-up typewriter.

Jenna: And being with you would make me feel closer to my mother.

Felicia: Oh, honey, I hope so. Gloria was so special to me, a dear friend.

Jenna: Are you sure? Are you sure I won't be in the way?

Felicia: No, of course you won't, never.

Lucas: Jenna, we want to be there and help you through this.

Felicia: Whatever you want to do, we'll do it.

Lucas: Say the word.

Mother Superior: Well, Jenna? It's been a while since I've seen a smile on that pretty face of yours.

Jenna: Would it be all right if I spent the rest of Christmas break with Miss Gallant?

Mother Superior: It's all taken care of, Jenna.

Jenna: Thank you.

Mother Superior: Provided it's what you really want to do.

Jenna: Yes, I do, I really do.

Mother Superior: Then go.

Jenna: I'll be packed in 10 minutes.

Mother Superior: I'm sure you can make it in 5.

Jenna: I was trying not to feel bad.

Felicia: Oh, honey.

Jenna: And then you come back. This is just like a New Year's eve out of one of your books, Miss Gallant.

Felicia: Good, go! Go on! Thank you.

Amanda: What is it? What do you want?

Sam: I was just checking to see if you were ok.

Amanda: Why wouldn't I be?

Sam: Well, you ran out of my office in such a hurry, I --

Amanda: I'm ok. Hi, Olivia.

Olivia: Hi.

Sam: Olivia just got back into town, so --

Amanda: How was New York?

Olivia: Terrific. I'm glad to be back, though.

Sam: She kind of surprised me, so --

Amanda: Oh, nice.

Sam: Yeah. We'll, we're going to take off, so --

Amanda: Is everything in?

Sam: Yeah, the entire issue's with the printer, so we'll --

Amanda: Great. Have fun.

Olivia: Are you sure that everything's all right?

Amanda: Sure, yeah. I probably look a little tired. I need blush or something. You know, it's late. Look, I've had a long day at work, so if you guys don't mind, um --

Sam: Right, yeah. We can head out of here. I'll see you after the holiday, ok?

Amanda: Yeah.

Sam: Don't work too hard. It is New Year's eve, after all, so --

Amanda: Gee, I almost forgot.

Sam: Are you sure you don't need anything else from me?

Amanda: No, nothing.

[Door closes]

Iris: You enjoying your present?

Grant: Present?

Iris: Yes, the one I brought you from Spencer.

Grant: Oh, well, yes, the small hand and the big hand seem to be functioning very well.

Iris: Well, I should think so, considering how much they cost. Your father is a very generous man.

Grant: Is he?

Iris: Don't you think so?

Grant: Yes, I guess he is.

Iris: And a very powerful one. Grant?

Grant: What?

Iris: Are you still interested in the farm woman?

Grant: Why don't you just drop it, Iris?

Iris: Would it be too much to ask for us to have a conversation? I mean, we are here together.

Grant: [Laughs] You know, Iris, you needed an escort, and so did I, and our evening here was nothing more than a mutual desire not to show up alone. But if it's small talk that you would like, absolutely. Let's just have at it. Now, how have you been? How is --

Iris: I don't need this, Grant.

Grant: No?

Iris: No.

Grant: Have you seen any good movies lately?

Iris: And I don't need you or any man to escort me to a party.

Grant: Oh...

Iris: And I certainly don't need any man to take me home.

Grant: Well, good night, Iris.

Rachel: Alone at last.

Ken: I guess this is about as good as it's going to get. Yes, this will do.

Rachel: Matthew noticed my ring.

Ken: What did you tell him?

Rachel: The truth.

Ken: That you and I are --

Rachel: Are contemplating a future.

Ken: What did he say? Did he like the idea?

Rachel: Well, he said if it made me happy, he was happy.

Ken: That makes me happy.

Rachel: [Laughs] Good.

Matt: Oh, boy. Hey, having a good time?

Paulina: Well, things started off a little rough, but now I'm having a great time.

Matt: So am I. This is great. I only wish Amanda and Jamie could be here.

Paulina: Yeah, that's too bad.

Matt: Especially Jamie. I mean, this is the benefit for his clinic.

Paulina: I still don't understand why he had to leave town.

Matt: Ah, an emergency.

Paulina: Oh. Well, it must be difficult for Marley, with the trial starting so soon.

Matt: I guess she just told him there's nothing he can really do.

Paulina: I guess there's not much anyone can do for Marley right now.

John: Here we are --

Sharlene: Ah, thank you.

John: Club soda, heavy on the club.

Sharlene: Ha! I hope he likes bubbles. That's about all I've been having lately.

John: The baby?

Rachel: Excuse me, would you mind if I talked to John for a minute?

Sharlene: No, not at all.

Rachel: I won't keep him very long.

Sharlene: Go ahead. I'll see you.

Grant: You have to stop hiding from me, Sharlene.

Sharlene: I'm not hiding from you, Grant.

Grant: But you've been home since Christmas, and we haven't even talked.

Sharlene: Well, we have no reason to talk.

Grant: Sharlene --

Sharlene: No, Grant. I will not let you dictate to me where we talk and when and what about. Excuse me.

Grant: Sharlene -- Sharlene! Dammit!

John: And you haven't heard from him?

Rachel: Not since he left. It's not like him not to stay in touch.

John: I don't think anyone at the hospital knows where he is, either.

Rachel: How has he seemed at the hospital lately?

John: All things considered, he's handling things very well.

Rachel: I wish he hadn't had to perform surgery on Jake.

John: He did a great job.

Rachel: I know, but the strain has been a lot on him, and all of this business with Marley.

John: I don't understand the D.A.'s office railroading Marley like this.

Rachel: Do you think this had something to do with his taking off?

John: I honestly don't know. You'll hear from him soon, I'm sure. Things will work out for him and Marley.

Rachel: Just the way they have for you and Sharlene?

John: Yeah. Where'd she go?

Rachel: I don't know.

Taylor: What happened in here?

Sharlene: I don't know. It's a mess, it's a mess.

Taylor: I saw Grant coming over to you.

Sharlene: Yeah, I'm sure a lot of people did.

Taylor: So how are you?

Sharlene: I'm fine.

Taylor: You weren't expecting to see him here tonight, were you?

Sharlene: I don't know, Taylor. I guess I should expect to see Grant everywhere. He seemed to be everywhere.

Taylor: It must be pretty upsetting to feel that you can't escape from him.

Sharlene: I can handle it.

Taylor: You sure?

Sharlene: [Sighs] Well, I can try my best. I don't know what else I can do.

Taylor: It's just important for you to avoid stress, Sharlene, especially now.

Sharlene: I'm fine. I feel strong, I really do.

Taylor: Are you sure?

Sharlene: Obviously, you don't think I am. You don't think I can handle this?

Taylor: Sharlene, if you felt you could handle Grant, then why didn't you? Why didn't you just deal with him?

Sharlene: But I did. I mean, I tried to tell him. I tried to let him know that I -- what are you getting at, Taylor? I don't understand. Do you think that I haven't been clear enough with him?

Taylor: Well, this is what I meant when I said there were still a lot of things for us to discuss in therapy.

Sharlene: But I have made a decision. Now, maybe there are a couple of things that are still unresolved, but it's -- ok, you're right. If it is over with Grant, then I should be able to face him.

Taylor: Now, wait a minute --

Sharlene: And I will. I'll do it right now.

Taylor: No, wait, now. It's wrong to put this kind of pressure on yourself if you're not absolutely sure.

Sharlene: I am absolutely sure, and I'm going to make sure that Grant knows it.

Grant's voice: Feel free to come and tell me anything anytime. Will you?

Sharlene's voice: Yeah, sure I will.

Grant's voice: What's wrong?

Sharlene: Nothing.

Grant: Is it -- are you worried about your husband?

Sharlene: No, no, it's ok.

Grant: Do you want me to take care of that for you?

Sharlene: No, what I want, what I want is for you to take me away from here! I want you to take me away from everything that I don't care about!

Grant: [Laughs] You got it!

Sharlene: Really?

Grant: Yes. I mean, how can I refuse you anything?

Sharlene: We're leaving?

Grant: Yes. It's good-bye, Bay City. Let's do it. Let's go tonight. Let's run away tonight, shall we?

Sharlene: Grant, oh, Grant!

Sharlene: Grant? You're right. We do have to talk, now.

Grant: I didn't really think you'd come back.

Sharlene: Well, maybe I'm not as predictable as you think.

Grant: No, I didn't mean that, I --

Sharlene: Grant, I know you read my note.

Grant: Well, I'm surprised that you didn't want to talk to me to my face.

Sharlene: Well, I tried to, on Christmas Day.

Grant: What?

Sharlene: I wanted to see you myself and tell you in person that it was over.

Grant: How come I didn't know anything about it?

Sharlene: Well, I went to your apartment and knocked several times, and there was no answer, so I left my note.

Grant: You must have been pretty anxious to, uh, to leave.

Sharlene: Yes. I wanted to see John and my family.

Grant: But I wanted to see you, Sharlene. I mean, it'd been so long since I'd seen you, and the agony of never knowing when you were coming back. Then I had to read the fact that you and I were finished. I had to read it in some lousy little note.

Sharlene: I'm sorry you were hurt.

Grant: Hurt? Do you know that I've thought about you every day from the time that you left? Do you know how much money I've spent trying to find you?

Sharlene: What?

Grant: I hired a detective.

Sharlene: Grant, I told you I needed to be alone. You should have respected my wishes.

Grant: What, just like John did?

Sharlene: Yes, yes --

Grant: Well, I couldn't.

Sharlene: Like John did.

Grant: I couldn't. I couldn't back off like John. I just couldn't do that. I can't. I can't give up on you, Sharlene. Don't you know that by now? I just cannot forget about you. Do you think John is capable of that kind of passion?

Sharlene: Stop it.

Grant: I don't.

Sharlene: Leave me alone, please.

Grant: Sharlene, listen to me. Just give me a chance. Please give me a chance, 'cause nobody will ever love you as much as I do.

Sharlene: You know, you have a way of nearly being able to convince me of anything.

Grant: Please --

Sharlene: No.

Grant: Just give me that chance.

Sharlene: Grant, I know now that you don't love me.

Grant: How could you say that?

Sharlene: You only want me, and you're willing to use any means to get me.

Grant: What, has John convinced you of that, or your little precious friend Taylor Benson?

Sharlene: John thinks that you intercepted a message that I left for him at the hospital.

Grant: What?

Sharlene: And he's right, isn't he? And don't lie to me. Please don't lie to me.

Grant: Yeah. Yes, I took that note.

Sharlene: When I realized that, I realized that there were so many times you were dishonest. I could never live with someone who lies.

Grant: Sharlene --

Sharlene: And that's why I'm doing what's right for me. I've gone back to the man who loves me enough not to control me. I've gone back to the man I love.

Grant: Sharlene, I did it because I loved you. I still love you.

Sharlene: And there was a part of me that once loved you.

Grant: And that always will. Sharly, you'll always love me. I know that.

[Door closes]

Sharlene: Did you miss me?

John: I've been looking all over for you. Sharlene, you're freezing!

Sharlene: I was out on the terrace. I was talking to Grant.

John: Are you all right?

Sharlene: I am now. And I would like to change my mind. I'd like to go home and spend the rest of the evening with my husband.

John: I think that can be arranged.

Sharlene: I love you, Dr. Hudson.

John: Anyone you need to say good-bye to?

Sharlene: Let's just sneak out.

Taylor: And you accused me of being uptight.

Grant: What?

Taylor: You should see how your jaw is set.

Grant: What -- what is your concern with me tonight, Taylor?

Taylor: After what you've done with me, Grant, that is not exactly the word I would use.

Grant: Well, whatever the word is, why don't you just leave me alone?

Taylor: Fine, fine. I'm leaving now anyway. I have an early appointment with Sharlene tomorrow. Good night.

Rachel: So, the crisis is over?

Sam: Yes, the cover is finished.

Olivia: It's absolutely spectacular.

Rachel: Is it?

Sam: But the crisis is never really over, not in this business, as we know.

Rachel: No, that's the trouble with this business. Sometimes you just want to forget all about it.

Paulina: Forget about "Brava"? Stop publication?

Rachel: Of course I wouldn't do that.

Sam: I think you're going to be very proud of this issue, Rachel.

Matt: Aah.

Rachel: Good. Well, you seem to be handling your return to work very nicely.

Sam: Well, give Amanda a lot of credit. She's made things really easy for me.

Rachel: No problems?

Sam: No, not at all like I thought there would be. She's really been great. Of course, I don't have any problems at all. My life is right as I want it right now.

Olivia: Ah.

Felicia: The party seems to still be going strong.

Lucas: Why wouldn't it be? You run a good party.

Felicia: Well, honey, what do you think? This is Tops.

Jenna: I...I've read about it in a magazine, but I never imagined.

Felicia: Well, this is a party, remember. I mean it's not like this every single night.

Lucas: Yes, it is, pretty much.

Felicia: Ok.

Jenna: Everybody looks so beautiful.

Felicia: So why don't I introduce you to everybody, ok?

Jenna: Me?

Felicia: Yeah, well, maybe not everybody, just my close friends. Except when you think about it, everybody here is a friend. Ok.

Lucas: Now, listen, why don't you give her a couple of minutes, let her get her bearings?

Felicia: Oh, you're right, of course.

Lucas: You'll have a good time. Give me this stuff. All right, ok. Go have fun.

Felicia: All right.

Sam: There you are!

Felicia: Hi, you two!

Olivia: We've been looking all over for you.

Felicia: Have you? Well, I want to introduce you to a friend of mine. This is Jenna. Jenna, this is Sam Fowler and Olivia Matthews.

Olivia: Hi, Jenna.

Sam: Hi, nice to meet you.

Jenna: Hello.

Felicia: Jenna is going to be spending the rest of the holidays with me.

Sam: Yeah? Terrific.

Felicia: Sam is my ex-husband's brother, yeah. And Olivia is a good friend, and she's also a dancer.

Jenna: That's nice.

Felicia: So, when did you get back?

Olivia: Oh, tonight. I wanted to surprise Sam.

Felicia: Well, you both look pretty happy.

Sam: We are. We couldn't be happier.

Olivia: [Giggles]

Iris: Amanda! What on earth are you doing here this late at night?

Amanda: I came to drop something off to you, and I did that, so I'm going to be going now.

Iris: Amanda, look, if you're upset about our little spat earlier, I'm sorry. I've had a chance to think about it, and I won't fire Sam. If you really think that he's worth what we're paying him -- oh, you're not upset about our little fight. That's not what's worrying you, is it?

Amanda: I'm glad that you're not going to fire Sam. I've really got to be going.

Iris: It's Sam, isn't it? Amanda, let it go.

Amanda: How?

Iris: Look, you made one mistake. If Sam's not prepared to forgive you for one little mistake, then -- then -- then to hell with him! Who needs him? I mean, he's a man! He's just a man, that's all! Who needs any man? I mean, goodness, you spend your whole life trying to please them, trying to make yourself attractive for them, trying to make them love you, trying to make them feel wanted and important, and then you make them feel important, and what happens? They walk out the door because you've made one little mistake. Of course, if they do the same thing to you, God forbid that you should get angry, much less walk out on them! Oh, no, no, no! You're expected to grovel at their feet and tell them that you love them even more for their imperfections! They're just revolting!

Amanda: Well, you certainly seem riled up tonight.

Iris: Well, yes, it hasn't exactly been a barrel of laughs, I must admit. Just in case you hadn't noticed.

Amanda: I -- yes.

Iris: And as for tonight, tonight was -- tonight was... indescribable. Ha! Look, look at this. Run in the stocking. This huge run in the stocking, and the hair. Don't you love the hair?

Amanda: Well, I'm sure I look pretty awful myself.

Iris: [Sighs] No, at your age it's impossible to look awful.

Amanda: You know, I don't think I have ever had a worse New Year's eve.

Iris: Oh, I have, I have had. [Chuckles] I remember one party I went to with all these horrendous people. I was on my way over to the stuffed mushroom hors d'oeuvres, tripped over this drunken lout, broke my foot, spent the whole of January in a cast.

Amanda: I guess that is pretty awful.

Iris: Well, they've all been pretty bad lately. I guess I'm getting used to it.

Amanda: Champagne?

Iris: Oh, yes, but this is not the cheap stuff, you know, that they serve around here. Oh, no, no, no, no. I've been saving this for a very special occasion, and I don't think there's anything more special than there is to you. Ha ha ha. Now if I can just get this top open, we'll be fine.

Amanda: You know, I guess -- I guess I will have some.

Iris: One for you and one for me, why not?

Amanda: Well, it's just champagne.

Iris: Mm-hmm. Oh, I doubt it.

[Cork pops]

Iris: Oh! [Laughs]

Amanda: Oh!

Iris: There we are. Oops! Quick, quick, quick, quick, quick! Oops!

Amanda: Oh, no.

Iris: Ok.

Amanda: All right, so what shall we toast to?

Iris: To 1991, a year of sheer and utter bliss, a year totally without men.

[Both laugh]

Rachel: Jenna, it's so nice to meet you.

Jenna: Me, too. I mean, it's nice to meet you.

Ken: Where are you from, Jenna?

Jenna: From outside Chicago.

Rachel: Felicia told us about your mother. We're terribly sorry. I know she was a lovely woman.

Jenna: She was.

Felicia: We're going to show Jenna all the sights of Bay City while she's here.

Rachel: Oh, that'll be fun. Maybe you could come over and have dinner with us.

Felicia: Oh.

Paulina: Or we could go to the movies sometime.

Felicia: You know, it might be nice for you to get out. Would you like that?

Jenna: Well, I wouldn't want to put anyone out.

Paulina: Don't be ridiculous. It would be fun.

Felicia: You see? Paulina, why don't you pick a night?

Paulina: Sure, I will.

Felicia: Good.

Jenna: Thanks.

Rachel: Well, Felicia, it's been a lovely evening, but I'm afraid we have to --

Felicia: Oh, no. Come on, don't tell me you're leaving.

Rachel: I have to get up early in the morning.

Felicia: Ken, talk to her.

Ken: Well, I'm afraid we're in the same boat. I have to get up with the sun.

Felicia: Ha ha ha.

Rachel: Well, are you coming with us?

Paulina: No, I think I'm going to wait for Matt.

Felicia: Oh, that's who I've been missing. Oh, where is Matt?

Ken: Last I saw him, he was eyeing some beautiful young woman.

Paulina: I'll go find him. I'll call you, Jenna.

Ken: If I can just find the checks for our coats.

Felicia: No, no, no, don't worry about that. I have great pull with the coat check.

Ken: Ah.

Felicia: Ah, listen, why don't you go on ahead? I want to talk to Rachel for a second.

Ken: Fair enough. Good night, Jenna.

Jenna: Good night.

Felicia: Honey, I'll be right back, ok?

Jenna: Ok.

Felicia: Ok.

Rachel: What's wrong?

Felicia: Well, from the look of your finger, I'd say something was very right. What is that little thing you're wearing there?

Rachel: A ring.

Felicia: Honey, I can see that it's a ring. I want to know what it signifies. I know, you can't talk right now, but I want the complete rundown of this thing as soon as possible if not sooner.

Rachel: Good night.

Felicia: Good night.

Jenna: I can't believe that someone like her is taking an interest in me. I mean, Felicia Gallant!

Olivia: Listen, I heard about your mother. I'm very sorry.

Jenna: Thank you.

Olivia: But you're in good hands with Felicia. You know, there's someone you should meet.

Jenna: Who?

Olivia: Matthew Cory, Rachel's son. Matthew!

Matt: What? Hi. Hey, what's up?

Olivia: I want you to meet Jenna.

Jenna: Hello.

Matt: How do you do, how do you do?

Olivia: Jenna is staying with Felicia for a few days.

Matt: Hey, that's great! Great, huh. Some soiree we got going here, huh?

Jenna: Yeah.

Matt: Well, between you and me, I could use a little hotter tunes, but, you know, some people really get off on the standards.

Olivia: Right.

Matt: What are we going to do? Anyway, how do you know Felicia?

Jenna: We -- we're just friends.

Matt: Oh.

Sam: So, this looks like the a-team here. What have I been missing?

Olivia: We were talking to Jenna.

Jenna: Would you excuse me? I really should find Miss Gallant.

Matt: Sure.

Olivia: Sure.

Paulina: Want some company?

Grant: Why not?

Paulina: I'm sorry I was mad before.

Grant: Ah, that's all right, forget it.

Paulina: You're really hurting, aren't you?

Grant: Who, me? Don't know the meaning of the word.

Paulina: You're still not over Sharlene, are you?

John: Who are you calling?

Sharlene: Josie.

John: Sharlene, it's still early there. She's probably out at a party or something.

Sharlene: You're right. I'll call her in the morning.

John: It's going to be a good year for us.

What's that look for?

Sharlene: You haven't said a word about my conversation with Grant.

John: Well, I have no intention of saying anything about your conversation with Grant.

Sharlene: You don't?

John: No, because it doesn't matter. All of the fighting, all the suspicions, they're over with. The fact is that you came back. You came back to me. That's all I care about.

Sharlene: I am back, John.

John: You know, as difficult as it was for us to be apart, there was some good in it, at least for me, 'cause I learned something. I learned how much I'd lose if you didn't come back.

Sharlene: I love you. Hear that song?

John: That's the song -- I remember that from the Snowflake Ball.

Sharlene: Oh, that's what it was. And we left the Snowflake Ball. We came back here. We danced the night away.

John: We sure did. Let's dance the night away again.

Sharlene: I don't think I can.

John: Oh, I think you can. Come on, right now.

Amanda: You're taking too much time.

Iris: Pour, pour. I'm thinking.

[Glasses clink]

Amanda: We each have to come up with five. That's 10 resolutions all together.

Iris: Mm-hmm. 10 resolutions to keep us from relying on men.

Amanda: Ugh, even the word gives me chills down the spine.

Iris: Brrrrr. I've got it, I've got it!

Amanda: What?

Iris: I think I've got it! I think I've got it!

Amanda: What? Tell me, tell me!

Iris: Ok, we resolve to -- are you ready for this?

Amanda: What?

Iris: Gain weight! [Squeals] We're going to put on 10 pounds at least!

Amanda: That's perfect!

Iris: More if possible!

Amanda: Perfect!

Iris: Yes, yes! No more relying on those men, no more trying to get svelte and gorgeous to make those creatures happy --

Amanda: No.

Iris: And no more trying to figure out what they really mean when they say something.

Amanda: Or when they don't say anything.

Iris: Mm-hmm.

[Glasses clink]

Iris: And we are never, ever, ever, ever, ever going to go out of our way to meet a man.

Amanda: No!

Iris: No.

Amanda: No.

Iris: And if by any chance, any misfortune, we run into one of the traitors and do meet one, we are going to put them out of our mind immediately, and we are going to throw ourselves into work.

Amanda: Yes, work. Wait a second! How many resolutions was that?

Iris: And if, by chance, it's impossible to avoid meeting someone who is somewhat attractive, well, we are not going to sit home and wait for that phone to ring.

Amanda: No, never! Never!

Iris: Even if that someone is somewhat more than somewhat attractive, even if he's -- if he's extremely attractive.

Amanda: Never. No.

Iris: No.

Amanda: We can --

Iris: Men are to be regarded as insignificant --

Amanda: Mm-hmm.

Iris: Irrelevant --

Amanda: Mm-hmm.

Iris: Superficial and peripheral to our lives, at best.

Amanda: At best.

[Glasses clink]

Iris: At best.

Amanda: We can take them or leave them.

Iris: We will leave them, Amanda, and do you know why? Because without them we are happier.

Amanda: Yes!

Iris: More confident.

Amanda: Yes.

Iris: Freer.

Amanda: We are.

Iris: More alive.

Amanda: Yes!

Iris: More of energy, more of everything!

Amanda and Iris: Yes, yes, yes! Ha ha!

Iris: Mm, 1991 is going to be our year, because of us, because of you and me, and not because of some...ridiculous man who thinks the whole world turns because of him.

Amanda: Mm-hmm.

Iris: What's this?

Amanda: Hmm?

Iris: Spencer Harrison called?

Amanda: Oh, yes, yes.

Iris: You're kidding.

Amanda: Yes. No, I took the message myself.

Iris: Well, why didn't you tell me? My goodness, this is big news.

Amanda: Because I -- I thought that --

Iris: Do you know who Spencer Harrison is?

Amanda: Yes, he's a man.

Iris: Amanda, he's not just a man. He's a very important man. I can't believe he called me. Hmm, I'm just -- I just have to return this call, ok? Just this once. Oh, you finish the champagne. Mm! Spencer Harrison. You know, I think this is going to be a great start to a new year. See you.

Felicia: There you are. Hi, honey, I've been looking all over for you.

Jenna: Oh, I'm sorry. I was going to tell you, but you were busy.

Felicia: No, I'm not mad at you. I've just been looking for you, that's all. Are you all right?

Jenna: Yeah.

Felicia: No, no, I don't think you are. I'm the one who's sorry. I should have never brought you to this party tonight. It's been too much for you.

Jenna: All these people, they all look so beautiful, having such a wonderful New Year's, and my mother...

Felicia: I know.

Jenna: I just can't stop thinking about her.

Felicia: You should never stop thinking about her. She was a wonderful woman. I know that I'm never going to stop thinking about her.

Jenna: I just wish I could have spent more time with her, do more for her.

Felicia: Gloria knew how much you loved her.

Jenna: But I wanted to tell her.

Felicia: Honey, everything is going to be ok, you'll see.

Jenna: How can you say that? My mother is dead. How is it ever going to be ok?

Felicia: Because I know it will be.

Jenna: No, you don't. You don't know anything about me.

Grant: Well, it's a hell of a New Year's, isn't it?

Paulina: Hey, things can always get worse.

Grant: Hmm. Yeah, so I've noticed.

Paulina: You're not used to losing, are you?

Grant: No, not like this.

Paulina: Come on, Grant, face it. You didn't lose Sharlene, because she was never really there, not for you. [Sighs] I got to go. Matt's waiting for me downstairs.

Grant: Paulina... will I see you again?

Paulina: That's up to you.

Sharlene: I'm not much fun to dance with, John.

John: Sure you are. You're just a little further away, that's all.

Sharlene: Do this, just turn to the side, turn. Just a little to the side, try that.

John: That's nice. I like that, mm-hmm.

Sharlene: [Laughs] Oh, give me your hand. Hold on, wait. You're going to get a big one. Did you --

John: Whoa!

Sharlene: Oh, John, I never get tired of that.

John: Whoa! This guy is going to be a field goal kicker for the bears.

Sharlene: Maybe a ballerina. C'mon, she could be a ballerina.

John: Well, maybe he'll be a ballerina, and she'll be a field goal kicker for the bears.

Sharlene: Let's not worry about what he or she is going to be until he or she sleeps through the night.

John: Tell me something.

Sharlene: Mm-hmm.

John: How long did it take Josie to sleep through the night?

Sharlene: I think it took her about 2 1/2 years, till she was 2 1/2.

John: No, you're kidding me.

Sharlene: Oh...

John: Sharlene, you're not kidding me, are you?

Sharlene: C'mon, doc, you're not afraid of a little sleep deprivation, are you?

John: 2 1/2 years? Really?

Sharlene: Yes.

John: Oh.

Sharlene: Sleep or no sleep, we're going to have the best year ever.

John: 2 1/2.

Sharlene: But it'll all be worth it, you'll see.
