Tess: I need this [Indistinct].

Donna: Excuse me. Dr. John Hudson--I understand he's on duty today.

Tess: Yeah, he sure is. Would you like me to page him?

Donna: Yes, please. Thank you.

Tess: Dr. Hudson, please report to nurse's station 3. Dr. Hudson, nurse's station 3. Thank you.

Jake: How about some coffee?

Donna: What are you doing here?

Jake: Actually, Donna, I'm following you, and I'm not gonna stop until you talk to me.

Olivia: Amanda. Aha. Yes, yes, yes, yes. All right. Yes, hello. Sam Fowler, please. Fowler, yes, yes.

Matt: What's going on here? Olivia, why are you in Amandaís office?

Evan: Amanda.

Amanda: [Screams] What?

Evan: When you wake up, you really wake up.

Amanda: Why? What time is it?

Evan: Just past 10:00.

Amanda: 10:00? We missed the deadline.

Evan: What's that--what's that I hear?

Amanda: Oh, my God.

Evan: Shh.

[Rolls tongue] Ba ba ba ba. It's a drum roll.

Amanda: What's the matter with you, Evan?

Evan: Nothing. Nothing is the matter with me. Everything's great. Nothing--everything's fine. Behold--a copy of "Sophisticate."

Amanda: Are you serious?

Evan: This is the first copy. The first copy.

Amanda: Is this for real?

Evan: It's as real as it gets.

[Cheering]

Amanda: Yay! "Sophisticate"!

Evan: You did it.

Amanda: Oh, no. We did it. Yay!

Donna: I have nothing to say to you.

Jake: Then just listen.

Donna: No. Go away.

Jake: Donna, all I want to do is apologize.

Donna: It's too late.

Jake: I thought if I talked--

Donna: You thought wrong.

Jake: All I was trying to do was help.

Donna: I donít need your help, Jake.

[Jake grunts]

Jake: So this is it, huh?

Donna: This is it.

Jake: What about the business?

Donna: That's it. Just business.

Jake: Just business?

Donna: That's all we have.

Jake: That's all we have.

Donna: Now if you will kindly leave me in peace, I would appreciate it.

Jake: No. I am not gonna leave you in peace, not till you let me explain what happened.

Donna: I know what happened, Jake. You presumably went to Michael begging--

Jake: Who told you I begged?!

Donna: What else would you have done?

Jake: I made it perfectly clear to Michael--

Donna: I donít want to hear it.

Jake: You never want to hear it.

Donna: I donít want to hear what you have to say. John, hi.

John: Hi, Donna. Hey, Jake.

Donna: I wonder if I could talk to you for a minute.

John: Sure.

Donna: If this is a bad time, I can come back--

John: No, no. I'm on a break. It's all right.

Donna: Good, perfect. Could we go to the cafeteria?

John: Cafeteria's fine as long as you donít eat the food.

Donna: Ok.

John: Come on.

[Tess speaking indistinctly]

Reuben: Tess, Tess, I'm glad I bumped into you.

Tess: Hey, Reuben.

Reuben: I know this is kind of last-minute, but I gotta make you an offer, and you are going to love it.

Tess: I'm kind of in a rush.

Reuben: All right, all right. I'll give you the condensed version, all right. Here we go. Some friends of mine, they're throwing a party. It's a major celebration. It's gonna be wild. It's gonna be crazy. And I need a date. So I didnít want just anybody. I wanted you. I mean, what I'm saying is, can you go with me?

Tess: No. I'm sorry, Reuben. I got a class tonight.

Reuben: Oh, all right.

Tess: Some other time?

Reuben: All right. Yeah.

[Sighs]

Jake: Maybe it's just gonna be one of those days, huh?

Olivia: I was looking for Josie.

Matt: At 10:00 at night in Amandaís office?

Olivia: Well, actually, I was looking all over the building, but no luck. So I thought I would come in here and borrow Amandaís phone.

Matt: What's this?

Olivia: That?

Matt: This.

Olivia: It's a phone number.

Matt: Mm-hmm. 212 area code.

Olivia: Oh, 212.

[Gasps] New York. Doesn't that bring back memories, Matthew? Do you remember those amazing bagels--

Matt: You were calling Sam.

Olivia: No, I wasnít. Ok, ok. So maybe I was. So what? His show opened tonight in New York, and I wanted to find out how it went. Is that so terrible?

Matt: It could be.

Olivia: I thought you understood about Sam and me.

Matt: I'm trying to, Olivia.

Olivia: We're just friends, Matthew. I donít care what Josie tells you.

Matt: Donít blame this on her.

Olivia: I suppose she's also told you that it's all my fault that Sam even went to New York.

Matt: What?

Olivia: Oh, didnít you know? I am single-handedly forcing Sam and Amanda apart. That's her latest accusation.

Matt: Josie hasn't mentioned to me anything about New York.

Olivia: Right. Well, I forgot. Perfect little Josie can do no wrong.

Matt: Knock it off, Olivia.

Olivia: No, Matthew. You knock it off. Stop worrying about me and Sam. If I were you, I would start worrying about what's going on in your own backyard.

Matt: My backyard's fine, thanks.

Olivia: Come on, Matthew. Donít tell me you haven't noticed.

Matt: Noticed what?

Olivia: That Josie and Lucas are getting tighter by the minute.

Evan: It's pretty, isnít it?

Amanda: This has got to be the most beautiful thing I have ever seen.

Evan: Come on. Let's see. Know what this feels like? Like a real magazine.

Amanda: Like a great magazine. Oh, Howard Rico, you're the best.

Evan: Howard Rico, my man, you did it!

Amanda: I've gotta find this guy. I have to thank him. He's a miracle worker.

Evan: No. You are the miracle worker.

Amanda: All with a little help from my friends.

Evan: Well, whatever. You should feel very proud of yourself.

Amanda: I'm not sure what I feel. I know I'm excited and I'm very relieved and happy.

Lucas: Ah, there they are, our saviors.

Evan: No, no, no, no. She takes all the bows. She did everything.

Lucas: All right. Now, I promised our young star that she could take a look at the first issue.

Amanda: That's this. This is it!

Evan: And I'll tell you what. It's -tsss--it's hot off the presses.

Josie: I am so nervous.

Lucas: All right. Come on, Josie.

Amanda: I'm not gonna say anything to you. You have to see it for yourself.

Lucas: Here you go.

Josie: Oh.

Evan: Oh? Oh? That's it--"oh"?

Josie: No. It's--I--thank you.

Amanda: Oh, good, she likes it.

Lucas: What's not to like? You're welcome.

Evan: I was wondering when you're gonna get around to me.

Lucas: All right, come on. What are we standing around for here? Rumor has it that there's a little party waiting to happen at the Pelican club. Come on, let's go.

Evan: Yeah, I can handle that.

Josie: This is yours.

Amanda: Oh, right.

Evan: Hey, now you know how Henry Luce felt when the first copies of "Time" rolled off the presses.

Amanda: Yes, but was Henry Luce sleeping on the printer's couch? That's the question.

Evan: I donít know.

Lucas: Well, you can wake up at the Pelican club. Come on. Let's go to the party--

Evan: Amanda, I'll get our coats for us.

Amanda: No, not mine.

Evan: Why?

Amanda: I just want to make a phone call. I'll catch up with you.

Evan: Well, I'll wait.

Amanda: No, please go. I'll--I'm just gonna call Sam. I'll catch up.

Lucas: We'll keep--we'll keep a bottle of champagne on ice for you. Come on, cover girl.

Evan: A couple bottles.

Lucas: Couple bottles.

Evan: Let's roll!

Woman: Fogel art gallery. This is the answering service.

Amanda: Oh, um, this is Amanda Fowler. I was looking for my husband Sam Fowler. I understand there's nobody at the gallery right now.

Woman: Fowler, Fowler.

Amanda: He's an artist.

Woman: Good for him. Yeah, I have a message here.

Amanda: For me?

Woman: "Amanda, everything's fine. See you in a week or so."

Amanda: Ok. Um, thank you. Could you give him a message and tell him that I will be at the Pelican club tonight if he wants to call me there? Thank you.

Woman: All righty.

Evan: Amanda, Lucas is driving one of those little sports cars. I canít even hardly get in there. So if you'd like to split a cab, I'll wait for you. I'll wait in the car if you want to make--

Amanda: No, no. I'm ready to go.

Evan: Are you?

Amanda: Yeah.

Evan: Well, then, come on. Let's go celebrate.

Amanda: All right; yeah!

John: Brave enough to try a doughnut?

Donna: No, thank you. I'm not hungry.

John: It's the only way that you can enjoy this place, if you're not hungry.

Donna: You look well.

John: Thank you. I feel great. I miss Sharlene, but other than that, I'm fine.

Donna: You're very lucky to have one another.

John: Well, I know that I'm lucky. I, uh--I really wanted--oh,

Donna: Why?

John: Because I've been meaning to call you for the last couple of weeks, and I havenít. There's no excuse.

Donna: Donít bother. Really. Donít worry.

John: I'm really sorry about what's happening between you and Michael, and I wanted to tell you.

Donna: Well, you're his brother. It's very awkward.

John: I just wish I could help.

Donna: Maybe you can.

John: How?

Donna: Well, you're close to him. Surely he's confided in you.

John: No. Not at all.

Donna: He hasn't said a word about me to you?

John: No, nothing. Believe me, I've tried. I can see the pain he's in, but he wonít open up.

Donna: Well, have you--

John: What?

Donna: Never mind.

John: No, what? What?

Donna: I just wondered if you've met this--his woman, girlfriend, whatever he calls her.

John: No, no. He hasn't even mentioned her, let alone bring her around for anyone to meet.

Donna: Well, so much for that.

John: Seems strange though.

Donna: How?

John: Doesn't this whole thing seem strange to you? I mean, who is this woman anyway? Why hasn't anyone met her? And when did Michael ever find the time for the two of them to get close?

Donna: I was hoping that you could provide me with some of those answers, John.

John: I wish I could.

Donna: Well, thanks. I'll let you go.

John: Donna... donít give up on Mike.

Donna: Why?

John: Well, I just have this feeling that there may be something going on here that neither one of us understands.

Donna: Right.

Matt: Lucas is Josieís boss, Olivia.

Olivia: Are you sure that's all there is to it?

Matt: Yes, I'm sure that's all.

Olivia: They seem awfully close to me.

Matt: Why wouldnít they be? Lucas gave Josie a big break.

Olivia: Oh, I know that. She must be very grateful.

Matt: Why not? He's helped her all the way.

Olivia: A lot.

Matt: What?

Olivia: He's helped her a lot.

Matt: Olivia, he's an older man. I donít think he's after Josie.

Olivia: I hope not.

Matt: You canít stand it, can you? Her success. That's it, isnít it?

Olivia: No, Matthew. As much as you would like to believe that's it, I'm not jealous of Josie.

Matt: Ok.

Olivia: I am merely concerned for you.

Matt: For me? Since when?

Olivia: Since I helped you find her, I feel I have a vested interest in the two of you.

Matt: You donít have a vested interest in anything, Olivia, except yourself.

Olivia: I care about you, Matthew, and I donít want to see you hurt.

Matt: That's very touching. Thank you. But I'm fine. I wonít get hurt.

Olivia: Fine. All right. So let's say that Josieís relationship with Lucas is strictly professional.

Matt: We donít have to say it. It is.

Olivia: Still you have to admit she's changed.

Matt: So what? She's changed. So what?

Olivia: Matthew, you know as well as I do that Josie doesn't have time for anything these days except her precious career.

Matt: How the hell do you know that?

Olivia: Do you mean to tell me that the two of you see each other as often as you used to?

Matt: We see each other all the time, Olivia. Not that it's any of your business.

Olivia: Well, then, I suppose she's told you that the first issue of "Sophisticate" is supposed to be out tonight.

Matt: Yes. I am quite aware of that.

Olivia: And has she also told you that there's a huge party at the Pelican to celebrate? Didnít think so.

Matt: She would have told me about that.

Olivia: I'm sure she meant to.

Matt: I have to give her a call.

Olivia: Why bother? She's probably at the Pelican right now celebrating without you.

Josie: Mama, mama.

Sharlene: Hello!

Josie: Hi. Wait, wait, wait, wait. Close your eyes.

Sharlene: Close--why?

Josie: Just donít argue. Just do it.

Sharlene: Closed.

Josie: It's important. Ok, look. Donít you like it?

Sharlene: Like it? Oh, honey, I knew you were beautiful, but I didnít know you were this beautiful.

Josie: You're crying. Oh.

Sharlene: I'm proud.

Lucas: Well, I hope you approve.

Sharlene: I think it's--it's wonderful, Lucas. I want to thank you for helping Josie.

Josie: And this is just the beginning, right, Lucas?

Lucas: Yes, it is. You have a very big future, Josie.

Josie: I canít even believe this is happening.

Lucas: I almost forgot. I have to call Iris in New York. I want her to get a copy of this first thing in the morning.

Josie: All right. Well, tell her I said hello.

Lucas: I will, I will. And would you use your influence and try and get us the best table in the house?

Josie: Of course, darling.

Evan: Hey, any luck?

Amanda: I know Sam has to be trying to get a hold of me. We're just missing each other.

Evan: Well, you'll connect sooner or later. But in the meantime, I think this calls for a toast.

Amanda: To "Sophisticate."

Evan: No, no, no, no, no, no, no. To the best new publisher in the business.

Amanda: No. Wait.

Evan: Wait, wait, wait.

Amanda: I couldn't have done it by myself. So here's to us, the best new publishing team in the business.

Evan: Oh.

Amanda: Ok.

John: Well, listen. Donít stand on ceremony. If you ever need to talk, you know where I am. I'm always here. Occasionally at home, but--

Donna: I know, but you're so busy all the time.

John: Donna, we're family, right?

Donna: Right. Family.

John: Listen. Donít rush into a divorce.

Donna: I didnít want this. I didnít want this, John.

John: I know. Have you considered counseling?

Donna: I tried that. Michael refused.

John: I donít know what's gotten into him. I'll continue to try to get through to him. You take care of yourself.

Sharlene: Pelican. Good evening.

John: Sharlene, is that you?

Sharlene: John!

John: Hi. How's it going?

Sharlene: John, it is so exciting. Josie just got here a few minutes ago with the first issue of "Sophisticate."

John: Oh, yeah? How's it look?

Sharlene: Wait till you see it. She's--John, she's stunning.

John: Is Lucas with her?

Sharlene: What do you think?

John: Stupid question.

Sharlene: But I'm trying, John. I am trying incredibly hard not to ruin this for Josie.

John: When are you gonna be finished over there?

Sharlene: Oh. Actually, my shift is ending soon.

John: Would you like to stop by here for awhile?

Sharlene: Hold that thought, doctor. I'll be right over.

[Laughs]

Josie: ...It's a person.

Lucas: It's you.

Josie: Oh, Lucas.

Lucas: But this picture isnít too bad though, huh?

Josie: Yes, it's--

Sharlene: Well, hi.

Zack: Congratulations.

Ronnie: Oh, you must be so proud.

Sharlene: Does it show?

Ronnie: Yes, it shows.

Zack: And where's the cover girl?

Ronnie: Over with her fans where she should be.

Zack: She sure is pretty, but then look at her mother.

Sharlene: Oh, stop it. Thanks.

Reuben: What's up?

Zack: Hey, Reuben.

Reuben: How you doing? So where is my old roommate the star?

Sharlene: Right over there.

Reuben: Ok. Excuse me. I gotta go. I gotta go. Excuse me, excuse me.

Sharlene: Ronnie, can you do me a favor?

Ronnie: Sure.

Sharlene: I have to go to the hospital. I'm meeting John. Would you just make sure that Josie gets home all right?

Zack: Hey, no problem. But by the looks of it, I doubt if she's gonna need anything.

Ronnie: We'll keep an eye on her.

Sharlene: Thank you.

Zack: See you later.

Sharlene: Have fun.

Josie: Do you believe this?

Reuben: Of course I believe it. I'm the one who told you about it in the first place. It's just a matter of time with you.

Josie: I want you to meet Lucas.

Reuben: All right.

Josie: Lucas, this is Reuben Lawrence.

Lucas: Reuben.

Reuben: How you doing? Nice to meet you.

Josie: We knew each other in New York.

Reuben: Oh, yeah.

Josie: We're best friends.

Reuben: Yeah. I engineered her big break.

Lucas: Oh.

Josie: It was a commercial.

Reuben: Did you see it?

Olivia: I hate to say I told you so, but there she is.

Matt: Yeah.

Lucas: So, what was tonight-- good?

Matt: Excuse me. Do you mind if I crash your party?

Josie: Matthew, hi.

Matt: Hi.

Josie: You're not crashing. You belong here with me.

Matt: Oh, why didnít you invite me, then?

Lucas: Excuse me. Sorry to interrupt. Hello, Matthew. But there are some photographers from the west coast that want to see you.

Josie: Oh, great. Um, I'll be right back.

Matt: Well, ok.

Olivia: Hi.

Amanda: Hi.

Olivia: You must be tired of having people congratulate you.

Amanda: Oh, no. Not at all.

Olivia: Well, you worked so hard. I'm glad it paid off for you.

Amanda: Thank you.

Olivia: Have you heard from Sam?

Amanda: No. No, not as yet, but I expect to hear from him soon.

Olivia: Well, I wonít keep you from your well-wishers.

Amanda: Have a good time.

Evan: Hey, hey, hey, hey. How about some more bubbly--

Amanda: No, no, no, no. No more for me, thanks. I'm dizzy enough as it is.

Evan: You know, you're pretty amazing. I would think you'd be exhausted by now. We've been up for what? Almost two days?

Amanda: Well, how do you feel?

Evan: Well, I'm getting a little tired. The bed is looking real good to me.

Amanda: Donít start talking like that, or you're gonna make me yawn. You're making me yawn.

Evan: Well, anytime you want me to call you a cab, we'll hit the dusty trail.

Amanda: No. Actually, I'm really too wired to sleep. It's just the crowd scene. I'm not sure I'm really up to it.

Evan: You're right, you know. We should get out of here.

Amanda: Should we?

Evan: Yeah. 'Cause if not, I think we're gonna pass out on our feet.

Amanda: You see, if I go home, I know I'm just gonna end up pacing the floor.

Evan: Wait, wait, wait. Did I say anything about going home?

[Phone rings] No, I didnít, did I?

Amanda: Well, then, what are you talking about?

Evan: Well, I know a perfect place for you.

Amanda: Do you? Where?

Evan: Trust me. I'll got get our coats.

Ronnie: Oh, hi. Just a minute. Let me check and see. Sure. Oh, Olivia, have you seen Amanda? Phone call. New York.

Olivia: Oh, I know where she is. I'll take it.

Ronnie: Oh, ok. Thanks.

Olivia: Thanks. Hello?

Sam: Amanda?

Olivia: No, it's Olivia. Sam, how are things going in New York?

Sam: Fine. Listen. I'm trying to reach Amanda. She left me a message she was there.

Olivia: Oh, well... I'm sorry, Sam. You just missed her.

Josie: It's very interesting that you would ask that, because I just had my color chart done. It's fascinating, I mean there's colors for spring, summer, winter, fall. I'm a fall. You know, browns, rusty colors.

Olivia: Some night.

Matt: You are the mistress of understatement, Olivia.

Olivia: True.

Matt: Where's Amanda at?

Olivia: I saw her awhile ago. I donít know.

Matt: Yeah. Well, I still have to congratulate her for tonight.

Olivia: Well, I think she left.

Matt: Her own party. She left her own party?

Olivia: I saw her go out the door. She was with Evan.

Matt: You're really enjoying this, aren't you?

Olivia: What?

Matt: You know what.

Olivia: If you mean the problems between Sam and Amanda, you're wrong. I donít want them to have trouble any more than I want you and Josie to have trouble.

Matt: Exactly.

Olivia: Listen. It's no fun seeing your friends unhappy. Come on. What do you say we dance?

Matt: Sure. Why not?

Olivia: All right.

Reuben: Hey, Courtney.

Courtney: Reuben.

Reuben: I didnít even see you come in.

Courtney: Waited till your back was turned.

Reuben: Oh, pretty funny for a cop.

Courtney: Oh, I had them in stitches down at the station house.

Reuben: That's 'cause it's a captive audience.

[Laughter]

Courtney: Not bad, Reuben. Not great, but not bad.

Reuben: Oh, so how's everything going? Did you ever find that stuff at Calís yet?

Courtney: Not yet, but I'm expecting to hear something tonight though.

Ronnie: So, Reuben, where's Tess?

Reuben: She had a class tonight. I told her she had enough class, but she didnít want to believe me. Aaaa-ha.

Ronnie: [Laughing]

Zack: [Indistinct], Aren't we?

Reuben: Excuse me.

Reuben: Real funny seeing y'all here, huh?

Tess: Hi, Reuben.

Marshall: Hello, Reuben.

Reuben: Hi. Guess you got to give the teacher an apple or something, huh? Or is this supposed to be recess?

Tess: Marshall was just getting off as I got out of class.

Reuben: Mm-hmm. That's real lucky for Marshall, then, isnít it?

Tess: Reuben, why donít you join us?

Reuben: No. That's all right. I'm here with some friends, ok. Y'all just have fun. So, Courtney?

Courtney: Yeah? What?

Reuben: You hear that?

Courtney: What?

Reuben: Music. That is our song.

Courtney: Our song?

Reuben: That's right. That's our song. Get on up. Get up.

Courtney: Ok.

Reuben: Uh-huh. Woo! You are looking good tonight.

Courtney: Thank you.

Reuben: Let's go! Mm, mm.

Donna: I canít believe you're still following me.

Jake: I'm not following you. I'm standing right beside you.

Donna: Why?

Jake: I'm not gonna let you wander all over town in the middle of the night all by yourself.

Donna: I'm perfectly capable of taking care of myself.

Jake: Right. You proved that at Tops, didnít you? What the hell are you doing here?

Donna: I donít see that that's any of your business.

Jake: Donna, I am not gonna leave you alone until you start talking to me.

Donna: You're so annoying!

Jake: Well, I have other qualities.

Donna: I had to come here, Jake. All right?

Jake: Why?

Donna: Because this is where Michael was shot, and there might be some answers here.

John: So is it still "be kind to Lucas" week?

Sharlene: What?

John: Never mind. Did you have a good time tonight?

Sharlene: John, I tell you. Josie--she was happy.

John: How is her mother?

Sharlene: My daughter on the cover of a magazine. This is--it's quite a thrill.

John: Did you talk to her about that fur? Oh, that's great.

Sharlene: What?

John: The fur that was delivered yesterday.

Sharlene: Oh, John. I canít--you know, I canít believe that I haven't told you this. This just goes to show you how busy our lives have become.

John: Told me what?

Sharlene: Frankie solved the mystery of the fur.

John: All right for Frankie. Who sent it?

Sharlene: I did.

John: You bought a fur?

Sharlene: Um, it was a mistake, John, and it had to be. You see, I had ordered a down vest a few weeks ago. It was a new one, and I must have gotten the catalog numbers mixed up.

John: Oh, so it came from a catalog.

Sharlene: Yeah, right. But I'd totally forgotten that I had ordered it. And then when the coat came-- I'm sending it back, you know.

John: Keep it. You probably look great in it.

Sharlene: No. I would never wear something like that. Besides, we canít afford it.

John: Maybe next Christmas.

Sharlene: No. Uh-uh. Donít you dare.

John: Sharlene, aren't you setting me up here? Isnít this just, like, a big hint for next Christmas?

Sharlene: I wish it was.

John: Come on. Wasn't it really?

Sharlene: John, come on. How could I have gotten them mixed up in the first place? And then I just forgot about it all.

John: That's ok. It's fine. The only thing that's important is that you remember who loves you.

Man: Hey!

Evan: You see what that is?

Man: Excuse me, folks.

Evan: Did you see that?

Amanda: [Squealing] Yeah!

Man: New magazine.

Evan: You did it. Yeah, it's a new magazine, all right.

Man: It's late.

Evan: It's late. Who cares? It's on time to us.

Man: You want one?

Evan: Do I want one? Let's see. I'll tell you what. I'll take 10.

Man: 10.

Evan: Here you go. Keep the change.

Amanda: Here. Give me some, give me some.

Evan: No.

Amanda: Yes.

Evan: No.

Amanda: Give me.

Evan: Look, you're entitled to it. You're responsible for it.

Amanda: Oh, it's so beautiful. And I am so cold.

Evan: Are you cold?

Amanda: Yes.

Evan: Well, I know the perfect thing for that. Hot tub.

Amanda: Great. Go ahead. Torture me.

Evan: No, I'm not torturing you. I just--well, I want to get you warm.

Amanda: The spa has been closed for hours.

Evan: Who needs a spa? Come here. Let me show you something.

Amanda: What?

Evan: Look out there. You see that building over there?

Amanda: It's your apartment building.

Evan: Very good, very good. Now, count 24 floors up.

Amanda: Uh-huh.

Evan: See that up there? Those windows are mine. And behind those windows is an 8-jet, 104-degree hot tub.

Amanda: No. No, Evan.

Evan: Amanda, we spend hours together. Have I made one wrong move on you? Stepped over the line once? Been anything but a perfect gentleman?

Amanda: No.

Evan: So I said I wouldnít push you, and I meant it. Doesn't a hot tub sound--look. I got plenty of suits to pick from. Doesn't it sound like a perfect place to be right now?

Amanda: Yeah.

Evan: Yeah?

Amanda: It does.

Evan: Then let's go.

Sharlene: One thing I donít remember.

John: I know what you're gonna say.

Sharlene: What it was like to have dinner at home.

John: No, no, that isnít what I thought you would say. Uh, home. I remember home. There was--there was a kitchen there, and there was this long table that we use to eat.

Sharlene: Yeah.

John: And the woman that lived there could cook.

Sharlene: That was me.

John: No, it wasnít.

Sharlene: Yeah.

John: Was it?

Sharlene: Yeah.

John: Well, that's it. I thought you looked familiar.

Sharlene: No, see. No, no. And then after dinner...

John: Mm-hmm.

Sharlene: Not that I have any recollection of this, mind you, 'cause it's been so long. In bed...

John: Yeah.

Sharlene: By 10:00 or 10:30...

John: Oh, yeah, with those really great blankets.

Sharlene: Mm-hmm. Watching the 11:00 news.

John: Or ignoring the 11:00 news.

Sharlene: [Laughs] You think we'll ever see those kind of nights again?

John: We better, 'cause I'm gonna seriously start to doubt my delving into the medical profession if we donít.

Sharlene: We do have the rest of our lives.

John: You're right. We do. So what are we complaining about?

Sharlene: I'm not doing that.

John: No?

Sharlene: Mm-mm. As a matter of fact, I've been feeling very, very lucky lately.

John: Yeah. Yeah. Me, too. Talked to Donna tonight.

Sharlene: How is she?

John: She's not good. She thought that Michael may have confided in me and that I'd have something to tell her.

Sharlene: And you didnít.

John: No. I'm just as confused as she is. Well, it seems like Donna and Michael have been married forever. They have a wonderful family, now they have little Mikey. I donít know. It seems to me like Mike is being awfully cavalier about this.

Sharlene: No. I'm sure he's not being cavalier, John.

John: It's just not like him to walk out of his marriage.

Sharlene: No. You know, you donít know that he's doing that. You only heard Donnaís side of the story.

John: Well, that's because Mike wonít confide in me, which makes it even more frustrating.

Sharlene: Yeah. If he wonít talk to you...

John: What did he say to you?

Sharlene: When?

John: Well, he said that he got a little tipsy New Year's Eve when he was talking to you.

Sharlene: Well, he didnít say anything about Donna.

John: Hmm. I guess he's not gonna talk to anyone about this. Donna said that he wouldnít even consider counseling.

Sharlene: You know, John, maybe you should just stay out of this.

John: Think you're probably right.

Sharlene: No. What I mean is, you know, as much as you feel like you should be doing something to help, you have to realize you canít. It's gotta come from them.

John: Yeah, yeah. You're right. You're right. It's just--it's scary, you know. If Donna and Michael canít make it...

Sharlene: How can we?

John: No, no. I donít mean that at all. It's just that--I donít know. I've always kind of held their marriage up as the prime example of how it should be.

Sharlene: Gee, guess we'll have to set our own example of a good marriage.

John: How'd you ever get to be so smart?

Sharlene: It can be done, you know.

John: Is it because you married me?

Sharlene: Yes, I think. Yeah.

John: That's what it is. I think things are gonna be fine as long as you're around.

Sharlene: Can you listen to my heart, doctor?

John: Why, certainly.

Jake: If I'm out of line--

Donna: You're out of line.

Jake: But I donít get it. I mean, I thought you were all through with Michael, you washed your hands of the situation.

Donna: I realized that I canít do that, not until I know the whole story. Lucas, excuse me. Hi.

Lucas: Hi.

Donna: Could I have a moment with you?

Lucas: Sure.

Donna: Um, you were here the night that Michael was shot?

Lucas: Yes.

Donna: Was there anybody at the table with you?

Lucas: No. We were alone.

Donna: A woman, perhaps, or somebody waiting for him.

Lucas: No.

Donna: You're positive?

Lucas: I certainly didnít see any woman.

Donna: Well, I guess I'll just have to take your word for it.

Lucas: Look. I'm sorry. Wish I could have been of more help.

Courtney: Whew.

Reuben: You dance great, Courtney.

Courtney: And you dance fast.

Reuben: [Laughs] Well, I gotta keep those feet moving. Woo!

Courtney: Why? Are you afraid someone will catch up to you?

Reuben: I ain't worried about that, you know, if the right person catches up to me.

Courtney: You're gonna have to slow down a whole lot for that to happen.

Reuben: Come on. Let's take another trip on the light fantastic, huh? I'll take it easy for you.

Courtney: Give me a couple minutes, ok?

Reuben: Must have had a hard day of chasing bad guys, huh?

Courtney: No. Today wasn't a chasing day. It was more of a thinking day. You know, reviewing cases and stuff.

Reuben: Oh, like with that thing with Cal?

Courtney: Yeah. That one hasn't gone as smoothly as I thought.

Reuben: What happened?

Courtney: Well, we had a lead. Someplace on North Berry, but it didnít pan out.

Reuben: You hit a brick wall or something?

Courtney: Yeah. Dead ends are all in a day's work, but we'll find that stuff he stole. It's just gonna take a little longer, that's all. You know, I'm glad you reminded me. I have to call in my machine, find out if there's anything going on with that.

Zack: Oh, just when I get them to play something that I can dance to, Ronnieís called in to talk to her boss. Courtney, would you care to dance?

Courtney: Oh, I never refuse a lawyer.

Zack: Thank you.

Courtney: Well, let's go a little bit easy, ok.

Zack: I wonít even dip.

Courtney: Reuben, could you keep an eye on my purse?

Reuben: Yeah, yeah.

Courtney: Thanks.

Matt: It's me. Could we have a little talk?

Josie: Where'd you go?

Matt: Well, I was waiting, watching, sitting with your adoring fans.

Josie: Matthew, I meant to call you. The party came up suddenly, and I've been busy.

Matt: Well, yeah. You know, I've seen you exactly twice in the last 5 days. What do I have to do, Josie?

Josie: I'm really sorry.

Matt: Do--do I have to make an appointment with Lucas? Is that what I have to do?

Josie: I didnít--I didnít ask for this.

Matt: Well, you love this. Are you kidding me?

Josie: It's a lot more than I'm used to handling. I guess I got caught up in it.

Matt: Yeah, and you forgot about me.

Josie: This is the happiest night of my life. Why do you insist upon ruining it for me?

Matt: Am I ruining it for you--

Josie: Yes, yes.

Matt: I'm sorry, Josie. I wonít ruin anything else in your life.

Josie: Matthew.

Amanda: Oh, wow. I can feel my muscles relaxing already.

Evan: How's the suit?

Amanda: It's a little small.

Evan: Well, there were others to choose.

Amanda: Yes. I know. I saw you have a whole collection in there.

Evan: Well, I like to be prepared, actually.

Amanda: For all those poor, unsuspecting women that you lure into your hot tub.

Evan: Well, they're pretty suspecting at this point.

Amanda: Actually, yeah. I guess they are.

Evan: You know, it's been a long time.

Amanda: Right. Sure.

Evan: Amanda, come on. You know how much I've been working. I haven't had much time for luring.

Amanda: Well, you certainly haven't lost your touch.

Evan: It's like riding a bike.

Amanda: Right.

Evan: To tell you the truth, I lead a pretty ascetic life.

Amanda: Oh, sure you do, yeah. That's why you have a hot tub in the middle of your bedroom. Are you getting in?

Evan: Oh, yeah. Let me just, uh, put some music on here. Track 4 is nice.

[Instrumental music plays]

Amanda: Oh, that's perfect.

Evan: Yeah?

Amanda: Yeah.

Evan: I would offer you some more champagne, but I'm all out. And champagne and hot tubs-- well, they donít go together too well.

Amanda: That's all right. Donít worry about it. I donít need anything. I've never been so naturally high in my life.

Evan: Oh, that does feel good. So, are you happy?

Amanda: Yeah, I am happy, especially if I donít think about the rest of my life. I'm real happy.

Evan: Try not to think at all. Just focus on the now. This moment.

Courtney: Reuben, Zack and Ronnie will give me a ride home.

Reuben: So early?

Courtney: Reuben, it's almost dawn. They're getting ready to close this place.

Reuben: Yeah. That's right.

Courtney: Good night.

Reuben: Hold on, hold on. Courtney, Courtney.

Courtney: Yeah?

Reuben: I really did have a good time seeing you. I just--I just wanted to say thanks.

Courtney: You're welcome. It was fun. I'm not sure that my feet will think so tomorrow. Good night.

Reuben: Good night.

Tess: Reuben, I'm sorry about tonight. I really didnít think I was gonna be free.

Reuben: That's cool. Maybe we can do it again sometime, huh?

Tess: I'd like that.

Marshall: Tess?

Tess: Yeah?

Marshall: I think they want us out of here.

Tess: Ok, I'm ready.

Marshall: Nice to see you again, Reuben.

Reuben: Yeah. You, too, man.

Reuben: Peter.

Jake: Donna.

Donna: If you're gonna tell me again that this place is about to close, I donít want to hear it.

Jake: Oh, donít tell me you have this secret fetish to be locked up in the Pelican club all night long.

Donna: There's one more waitress I have to talk to.

Jake: What else do you want to find out?

Donna: I donít know. It's something that John said today. Maybe we donít know the whole story.

Jake: What story? Your husband left you for another woman. Why do you keep putting yourself through all this pain?

Jake: Donna. Let's go home. All right? Let me take you home. Come on.

Man: Want one?

Matt: No. No, thanks.

Sam: Yeah, Hilda. It's Sam. Hi. I'm back in Bay City. I'm at the airport. Listen. I'm gonna pick up my bags and catch a cab and be home as soon as possible, ok. It might take me a little time. Yeah. Bye.

[Sighs]

Amanda: What are you thinking?

Evan: Thinking about "Sophisticate" being delivered to newsstands all over the country. People buying it on the way to work, telling their coworkers about it, and filling out subscription forms.

Amanda: Let's hope so.

Evan: What are you thinking?

Amanda: Me? I've just... nothing. Nothing. It's probably getting late.

Evan: So what?

Amanda: So I really should--I really should go. Oh, we forgot towels.

Evan: No, I have towels.

Amanda: So.

Evan: So. Put this up here. You warm?

Amanda: Yeah. Yeah.

Evan: Good.

Amanda: Evan?

Evan: Hmm?

Amanda: Thanks for--for helping me through all this.

Evan: Well, we helped each other through.

Amanda: Yeah, I guess so.

Evan: So you donít have to go, do you?

Amanda: You said you weren't going to do this.

Evan: I said I was going to let you make your own decision.

Amanda: I know.

Evan: Amanda... I think you know.
