John: Somebody is happy in her work.

Sharlene: And there is somebody who has had his first decent night's sleep in a week.

John: Decent night's sleep?

Sharlene: Yeah.

John: No, it is day's sleep, Sharlene. It is always a day. It is only in the middle of the day. It is, what, 5:30 in the afternoon? It's dark out already.

Sharlene: Oh, you deserve it--all those long hours. Tell you what, though.

John: Hmm?

Sharlene: I prefer it when you are awake.

John: You do?

Sharlene: Mm-hmm.

John: Oh, that is good.

[Knock on door] Oh, it is Mike. Hey, Mike. Come on in.

Sharlene: Hi, Michael.

Michael: Hey, how are you doing? I was just in your neighborhood. I will not stay long. I actually just stopped by to thank Sharlene for New Yearís Eve.

John: New Yearís Eve? What happened New Yearís Eve?

Michael: Well, didnít she tell you? She rescued me.

John: No. Matter of fact, she did not say a word.

Singer: ...The lord gave all the easy parts away

Vicky: Hi, hi.

Evan: I heard that Ms. Hudson was in the building. And all--not only is she in the building, but she is also in the big boss' office.

Vicky: I know. I had a meeting with Iris.

Evan: I know that. Now, you...

Vicky: I know. But I think she is going to give me a job. I think it would be fantastic. She's going to give me a--

Evan: Wait a second, wait a second.

Vicky: What? There is something you should know.

Vicky: What?

Evan: I donít pace. Evan Bates does not pace. It is in his contract.

Vicky: That is very funny. You make jokes and I am nervous here.

Evan: Well, why does this mean so much to you?

Vicky: I told you. I am starting over again. I am finding myself. I am facing reality.

Evan: I would feel good about that if I really felt that was what you wanted.

Vicky: What else could it be?

Evan: That you are out to get Amanda.

Amanda: I was just about to give up on you.

Sam: You been waiting long?

Amanda: No, it probably just seems long. The house is really empty without Mom here.

Sam: I went for a walk.

Amanda: Did you come to a decision?

Sam: Yeah, I have. I think you've made it pretty clear how you feel.

Amanda: Well, I just do not think that you should miss an opportunity like that. You should go to New York.

Sam: You've said that.

Amanda: What do you think?

Sam: What you think--that I should go to New York.

Amanda: So why donít you look happy?

Sam: Because I wonder if I will be coming home to a marriage.

[Opera music plays]

Rachel: [Sings with music] Gosh, that guy has been following me ever since I left Bay City.

[Singing] Nonsense. You've been listening too much to Mitch. This is nonsense. Nobody is following you. It is ridiculous, isnít it?

Vicky: I am here to get a job, not to shoot down your true love. Believe you.

Vicky: You--you donít think that I'm...

Evan: What?

Vicky: Jealous.

Evan: Oh, oh, what a terrible thought. Uh-uh.

Vicky: Absolutely. I have even discussed this with Jamie, you know.

Evan: Ooh, how legitimate can you get?

Vicky: Ok, fine. You be as sarcastic as you want, but I am not here to get back at the Coryís.

Evan: And if you stuck it to Amanda, you would definitely be doing that.

Vicky: I think I would make a very good writer, Evan.

Evan: Vicky, you do have a way with words.

Vicky: Did I tell you what my first article is about?

Evan: First article, no, you--

Vicky: It is about single mothers who do not have child care for their children. Do you know how many millions of women--?

Evan: I hate to interrupt your social stream of consciousness here, but a thought just occurred to me.

Vicky: Uh-huh, what?

Evan: Does Amanda have any idea what your intentions are?

Vicky: I am not sure--

Iris: Do not worry, Evan. Amanda will be here shortly and I will bring her up to date.

Lucas: Hello, Vicky.

Vicky: Hi.

Lucas: Welcome aboard.

Vicky: You mean it? I got the job! Whoo! I got the job!

Evan: Donít you think Amanda should have something to say about this?

Iris: Oh, come on. She's not even in the building.

Evan: Get off of it, Iris. Rachel just left.

Iris: I would like you to remember one thing. Lucas and I created "Sophisticate."

Evan: Yeah, you both have made that abundantly clear.

Iris: Mm-hmm. We fought for it. We put our minds, our hearts, and our money into it. And there is no way that your good little friend Amanda is going to mess it up.

Amanda: Sam, I am still going to be here when you get back.

Sam: That is not what I said.

Amanda: This is an incredible opportunity for you.

Sam: Yeah, just like "Sophisticate" is for you.

Amanda: You should go.

Sam: What about Alli?

Amanda: Alli and I will be fine alone for a couple of weeks.

Sam: Why do I get the feeling that you are just dying for me to leave town?

Amanda: No, that is not true. But I think...

Sam: But you think what?

Amanda: I think the separation can do us some good. It will give us the chance to think.

Sam: Yeah, maybe.

Amanda: Then when you get back, maybe we will be ready to get back together again.

Sam: That would be nice.

Hilda: Excuse me. Ms. Matthews is here.

Amanda: Thank you, Hilda.

Olivia: I hope I am not interrupting. I checked the studio. You weren't there, so I came in the back way.

Sam: No, it is ok.

Olivia: I tried to reach you at the loft, but there wasn't any answer.

Sam: Oh.

[Phone rings]

Amanda: Excuse me.

Amanda: This is my regular modeling time so I thought--

Sam: There has been a change of plans. I am sorry I didnít call you earlier.

Amanda: Yes, Cory residence.

Olivia: Will you be working at the studio again?

Sam: No, actually, I wonít.

Amanda: Oh, Sam. Look, I am really late for a "Brava" meeting. Iris has got to love this. I will be back as soon as I can, all right? I want to spend as much time as possible with you before you leave.

Sam: Donít worry.

Olivia: What did she mean, "Before you leave"?

Sam: That is what I was trying to tell you. Listen, I wonít be needing you for a while.

Olivia: You wonít?

Sam: No, I am going to New York.

Sharlene: I did not say anything to him because he has been sleeping all day.

John: You rescued Mike?

Michael: Yeah. Hey, she was a real angel of mercy, I gotta tell you.

John: What happened?

Sharlene: It was nothing.

Michael: Nothing? Come on. I went to the Pelican club, you know. I had a couple of shooters, couple of beers and, well, I got pretty looped.

Sharlene: Michael, it was not that bad.

Michael: Hey, hey, she took me--I hadn't had anything to eat all day, right? She takes to the back room, she tried to feed me. She gave me a cup of coffee, and tried to make sure I got home safe.

Sharlene: It was nothing. But you're welcome anyway.

John: So, what time you got, doc? I got to get to work. I'm going to be late. Would you excuse me?

Michael: Sure.

John: So you tied one on, huh?

Michael: Yeah, you know, I went to the ho--bar right after the hospital, there, and...

John: How's your shoulder doing, anyway?

Michael: Well, my shoulder has been better. I just wonít drive, that is all.

John: Oh, that explains the big old limo out there, huh?

Michael: Yeah.

John: How do you figure the shooting?

Michael: To tell you the truth, I do not know. I figured it was a case of mistaken identity or something.

John: I'd heard that you were with Lucas.

Michael: Well, yeah, he was there.

John: You think there is any connection?

Michael: No, no. I mean, they did not try to shoot him, did they?

John: But why you, Mike? Come on, that does not make any sense.

Michael: Well, you are right. It does not make any sense. Look, I got to go really, actually. I just stopped by to, you know, thank Sharlene, ok? You got some lady there.

John: So do you.

Michael: [Chuckles] No, man. I do not have a wife.

Olivia: You must be so excited.

Sam: Yeah, I guess I am.

Olivia: Well, come on. I want to hear all about it. Where are you going to stay? Where is your show going to be?

Sam: Olivia, look, I really do not have time for this. I am leaving tonight.

Olivia: Tonight?

Sam: Yeah.

Olivia: Well, listen, my evening is completely free. So, why donít I run your errands for you? I can go to the drugstore, the cleaners, anything you need to do.

Sam: I have not really even thought about that, Olivia.

Josie: Oh--

[Clears throat] Excuse me.

Sam: Hello, Josie.

Josie: Hello, Sam. Olivia.

Sam: Are you looking for Matt?

Josie: No, actually I was looking for Rachel. I wanted to say goodbye.

Sam: You are too late.

Josie: Oh, she left?

Sam: Yeah, about an hour ago.

Josie: Oh, I was at a fitting. Maybe I could send her a note.

Sam: That is a good idea. Listen, I have to call Caroline. Were you serious about wanting to run those errands for me?

Olivia: Oh, yeah. You bet.

Sam: All right. Well, I might impose on you, so stick around.

Olivia: Hey, stop. It is not an imposition.

Josie: [Chuckles] I will bet it is not.

Olivia: What is that supposed to mean?

Josie: What are you helping him with now?

Olivia: Well, not that it is any of your business, but he is moving his show to New York.

Josie: And what are you going to do, hold his hand while he packs?

Olivia: What is it to you?

Josie: You have no conscience at all, do you?

Olivia: Since when is it a crime to help a friend?

Josie: Oh, come on, Olivia. You know as well as I do that Sam would not be leaving Amanda at a time like this if it were not for you.

Vicky: Take some pictures of Lassiter or something. That would be wonderful.

Iris: Late again, Amanda?

Amanda: I was seeing my mother off.

Iris: Yes, well, I have already filled in everybody else. I guess I can brief you later.

Amanda: Actually, I am pretty well caught up on the premier issue.

Iris: Well, we will see about that. In the meantime, I would like to draw your attention to the next several issues.

Amanda: Excuse me, Iris.

Iris: What is it now?

Amanda: Would somebody here please tell me why Vicky is at this meeting?

Iris: Yes.

Evan: Excuse me.

Iris: I am sure you will be as thrilled about it as we are.

Amanda: About what?

Iris: We are going to do a full-length feature--a story on Vickyís experience as a single mother.

Amanda: You have got to be kidding.

Iris: No, I could not be more serious.

Amanda: Vicky is not a writer.

Lucas: We are aware of that.

Amanda: Then what on earth are you talking about?

Vicky: Oh, chill out, Amanda.

Lucas: We want you to interview Vicky and help shape the piece.

Amanda: Shape the piece?

Iris: Mm-hmm, without changing the content.

Lucas: Well, if you will excuse me, I have to run.

Iris: Oh, ok, darling. I'll catch up with you later.

Vicky: Thank you very much, Lucas. Bye.

Amanda: Now, wait. Let me get this straight. I am to interview Vicky.

Iris: Yes, I think it is a wonderful idea.

Amanda: Ah, then why donít you do it yourself?

Vicky: Oh, is there a problem?

Amanda: The problem is I do not want my brother's personal life dragged through the press.

Iris: But that is not what this is all about, is it, Vicky?

Vicky: No, of course not.

Amanda: I will not do it.

Vicky: Amanda, this is not a personal expose that I am writing.

Iris: It is about single mothers, for heaven's sake.

Vicky: Yes, and we're going to focus on the needs for child care.

Iris: Yes, and I think it is a tremendously important topic.

Vicky: Aimed at the group of people that are a significant percentage of your readers.

Iris: Demographic samplings show that, right, Vicky?

Vicky: Absolutely, Iris. Evan, do you think it is a good idea or not?

Rachel: This is nonsense. I mean, just because Mitch says you are in danger--nobody's following you. I mean, the only strange things have been happening... all right, I am going to turn into this side street, and then you will prove to yourself nobody is following you. See? Nobody's following you. Nobody's following you.

Sharlene: Where did Michael go?

John: He left.

Sharlene: So soon?

Singer: I fell in love again...

John: What did you guys talk about on New Yearís Eve?

Sharlene: Nothing much.

John: Did you talk about Donna?

Sharlene: John... ahem.

John: What? What, did he ask you not to discuss it with me? I donít understand what's going on here. Why wonít he talk to me?

Sharlene: Maybe just does not know how to--

John: How to what? How to be the guy with the problems?

[Phone rings] This is frustrating. He's my brother, for crying out loud. Hello? Yeah. Well--oh, no. Come on, we have already put so much money into that car.

Sharlene: Oh, John, how bad is it?

John: New transmission.

Sharlene: Oh.

John: Yeah, yeah. Well, sure, yeah. Go ahead and repair it. I mean, we do not have much choice, do we? Yeah, thanks--I think. Well, your car is going to be in the shop for a whole week.

Sharlene: Oh, John.

John: I thought it was going to just take a little bit of work.

Sharlene: All right, well, the burning question is now how do I get to work?

John: Want to take my truck?

Sharlene: And how do you get to the hospital, Dr. Kildare?

John: Oh, yeah. That is a problem, isnít it?

Sharlene: Yeah.

John: Hey, wait, wait, wait, wait. I got a solution.

Sharlene: Who are you calling?

John: Mike. He's got a driver and a whole limo for all week. Why not?

Sharlene: John, no, no.

John: Oh, sure. Yeah, come on. He will be delighted.

Sharlene: John, come on. No. He's got a lot on his mind. Let me just call a cab.

John: This is going to be fine. After all, you were the one who rescued him. Hello, Mike? Yeah, this is John. I want to ask you a favor.

Singer: ...Some future plan

Evan: Look, I am not an editor.

Iris: Does that mean you do not have an opinion? Well, I think Vickyís idea does have some merit.

Vicky: Well, thank you.

Iris: I think it is just the kind of article we need with the right tone for "Sophisticate."

Amanda: I think it stinks.

Evan: Oh, Amanda, why donít you just tell us how you really feel?

Amanda: Vicky knows nothing about being a welfare mother. She is just a spoiled wealthy woman that ran off with her child and came back when the going got too rough.

Vicky: You have got a bigger problem than I thought, Amanda.

Amanda: You are an opportunist--

Iris: Ah, ah, ah.

Amanda: ...Cashing in on other people's unhappiness.

Iris: La-di-da.

Vicky: She is not making any sense.

Evan: Ladies, please, please.

Amanda: I am the publisher and I say forget it.

Evan: Look, I want to talk to you privately, right now.

Amanda: I have said everything I need to say-- Evan: I do not care. I want to talk to you right now.

Evan: Oh, please do. Why donít you try and talk some sense into her. Come along, Vicky. I want to introduce you to the staff.

Vicky: Oh, I can hardly wait. It will be wonderful to meet some people that understand my ideas.

Amanda: You took their side. I do not believe you!

Evan: Why wouldnít I take their side? I know what she went through, and I think it would make a strong article.

Amanda: Oh, good. Oh, good, you write it. Go ahead.

Evan: It does not matter who writes it, Amanda. You're missing the point completely.

Amanda: What is the point?

Evan: You are handling this whole thing wrong.

Amanda: Oh, oh, I am sorry. I should have come in and say, "yes, Iris," and curtsy and say, "Yes ma'am, whatever you would like, yes, ma'am," right?

Evan: No, you attacked Iris head on.

Amanda: All right, I yelled--

Evan: You know better than that. Well, then you came off looking like a teenager throwing a tantrum.

Amanda: Thank you. Thank you, Evan. I feel much better now.

Evan: Look, I know there is something else bothering you. It has nothing to do with Vicky or her article.

Amanda: Sam is leaving for New York.

Evan: Why?

Amanda: The Fogel Gallery is doing a showing--him.

Evan: Well, that is great.

Amanda: Yeah.

Evan: So, what is wrong?

Amanda: Everything is just changing so fast. It is scaring me.

Olivia: It is not my fault that Sam is going away.

Josie: Well, you certainly are not helping the situation.

Olivia: You never think I help any situation. You are always dying to condemn me no matter what.

Josie: Olivia, the truth is you are always hanging around Sam, flirting like crazy, and throwing yourself at his feet.

Olivia: I do not throw myself at anybody's feet.

Josie: Oh, no? Oh, no? You should hear yourself. "Oh, Sam, I'll do anything to help."

Olivia: I am trying to be a friend to the man.

Josie: Oh, you are lying to yourself.

Olivia: Sam, hi. I am glad you're back. What can I do for you? Give me an errand.

Sam: Were you serious about that?

Olivia: Absolutely. I am at your disposal.

Josie: Excuse me, I--I have an appointment. Good luck in New York, Sam.

Sam: Thanks.

Olivia: Oh, I just canít stand it anymore.

Sam: What?

Olivia: Little miss manners. Why me? Every time I turn around, there she is with that--that holier- than-thou attitude and that revolting little smirk on her face. Now she thinks that you are going away because of me.

Sam: She said that, huh?

Olivia: Yes. I tried to tell her that there is nothing going on. I tried to tell her that I only think of you as a friend. She will not believe me.

Sam: I do not, either.

Olivia: Pardon?

Sam: Olivia, it is true that you have nothing to do with me leaving. But do you really think it is true that there is nothing going on between us?

Rachel: I do not believe it. Do cars still get flat tires? Now what do I do? Oh, no. Ah!

Rachel: Look, I know you have been following me ever since Bay City. But I have already called the police, and they are on their way. I mean, I have a car phone right here. Oh, no.

Dan: I did not mean to frighten you, Mrs. Cory.

Rachel: Dan!

Dan: I saw your car tire go flat and--

Rachel: Oh, my gosh. I am really relieved. You had me scared. I've been--I have been seeing this car following me. I had no idea it was you. Boy, I am happy to see you. What am I saying? No, I am not. What are you doing here? Who put you up to this? Mom did, didnít she?

Dan: Well...

Rachel: She did, huh? She said, "ok, go follow my little girl because she is going to be out there all by herself and not able to cope."

Dan: Well, she did not put it quite that way.

Rachel: Oh, you can tell her-- it is all right. This is between Mom and me. I really am very happy to see you. It would be really super if you could help me with this flat tire, and then you could just toddle off home. And then you can give my mother a message from me. You can tell her that I find this an insufferable invasion of privacy. She is over-protective. She always has been. This is infuriating and--

Dan: Does that mean that I should take the food basket back?

Rachel: Absolutely... no. Yes, go on, get it out of here. I donít--oh, ah. Wait a minute. Just let me see whatís... I'll just take this.

Olivia: This is very embarrassing.

Sam: Look, I do not mean it to be. I--I know how you feel about me.

Olivia: No, that is not true. I just--

Sam: And I also know how I feel about you.

Olivia: What?

Sam: I think you heard me.

Olivia: You have feelings for me?

Sam: Yeah, is that so hard to believe?

Olivia: Yes. I honestly thought that--

Sam: You thought that I just saw you as a nice kid. Not always so nice, but... then again, who needs nice?

Olivia: I do not know.

Sam: And I also realized that you are quite lovely... and talented... and lonely.

Olivia: Sam--

Sam: That is a very dangerous combination, especially to a man who is having problems with his wife.

Olivia: I have been very upset about you and Amanda.

Sam: I know that.

Olivia: I have never tried to come between you.

Sam: I know. I just want to make sure that you do not get hurt.

Olivia: Hurt?

Sam: Yeah.

Olivia: How could you hurt me? You have always made me feel so good.

Sam: I just want to make sure that I do not mislead you.

Olivia: You have not. You have only told me how you feel.

Sam: Yeah, well, there is a lot more to it than just that. You see, I hope this time away in New York will help heal the wounds between Amanda and myself.

Olivia: Right.

Sam: And when I come back, I am planning on moving back in with her.

Olivia: I am glad.

Sam: I am glad that we talked about this. So, do you still want to run those errands for me?

Olivia: Sure, sure.

Sam: You are allowed to change your mind.

Olivia: No. I do not change my mind that easily.

Evan: So, Sam is leaving tonight?

Amanda: Yeah, the Fogel had a cancellation and Caroline got Sam right in.

Evan: Well, that sounds great.

Amanda: Yeah, I told him it was a great opportunity. He should not miss it.

Evan: Well, no, he should definitely go.

Amanda: It has nothing to do with us--Sam and me.

Evan: Oh, see, I did not mean to imply that. And like I said, I am not going to push you any more.

Amanda: I know. I believe you.

Evan: And I want you to come up with your own conclusions about who and what you really want.

Amanda: I know, I intend to.

Evan: And if you need me, I will be around. And if you do not, I will stay out of your way.

Amanda: I am really grateful to you for all your help... and your criticism. Guess I'm just going to have to learn how to handle Iris and Vicky, too, I guess.

Evan: Oh, definitely Vicky. She's going to be around for a while.

[Knock on door]

Amanda: Great. Come in.

Vicky: Sorry, I did not mean to interrupt anything, but Iris got called into a meeting, and I do not have an office yet.

Evan: Come in, Vicky.

Vicky: Thank you. Amanda, I thought we should discuss the article that I am writing.

Amanda: Well, I'm afraid that's got to have to wait a little while, Vicky.

Vicky: Oh?

Amanda: I am sorry, but Sam is leaving for New York. I have to go home.

Vicky: Well, when do you think--

Amanda: I would be happy to meet with you tomorrow.

Vicky: Any particular time?

Amanda: Probably in the morning. I will give you a call and set it up.

Vicky: Well, Ms. Amanda certainly made a complete turnaround in the last few minutes. You definitely do have a way with her, donít you?

Evan: Well, you see, this is just the beginning. Amanda is coming around more ways than one.

Josie: Hi, John.

John: Hi.

Lucas: Hello, John.

John: Lucas.

Josie: You are not going to believe this, but Lucas wants to do an entire photo layout using me and the farm as a location.

John: No kidding.

Lucas: I will pay a location fee, of course.

Josie: It is all right, isnít it?

John: I think your mother is the one that you ought to ask.

Josie: Oh. Where is she?

John: She is upstairs getting ready.

Josie: Mama? Mama?

Lucas: You know, she should never lose that fresh, natural quality.

John: It is--it is pretty wonderful. My brother, Mike, just stopped by a little while ago. He was telling me about the shooting.

Lucas: It was incredible. It was absolutely incredible-- crazy people running around with guns.

John: Is that what you think it was, a bunch of crazy people?

Lucas: Well, Michael doesn't have any real enemies, does he?

John: None that I know of.

Lucas: Well, I was pretty scared, I donít mind telling you. I mean, it is not every day that you have a drink with a friend and he gets shot.

John: A friend? I did not realize that you and Michael were that close.

Lucas: Well, we have a lot of business in common, yeah.

Josie: I told her all about using the farm for the shoot.

Lucas: That is great. Do we have your permission? I mean, I thought it might be fun to see your daughter work.

Sharlene: It is fine.

Josie: Oh, that is terrific. I want us all to be friends.

Sharlene: It is cold. Is Josie going to be sitting out on a fence post wearing that little piece of lingerie you sent out here?

Josie: Mother.

[Horn honks]

John: Well, there is a big white thing out here about 50 yards long. It is either Michaelís limousine or a U.F.O. I donít know.

Lucas: Michael is here?

John: No, his driver is taking Sharlene to work.

Josie: Bye, mama. I wanted to show you the barn. It is really nice. We have lots of farm animals. And, oh, we have a beautiful pond about--it's about a mile away. It's really nice.

John: Come on, I will walk you out.

Josie: It might be frozen over, and there's a pasture. The pasture is--that's my favorite...

Amanda: Sam? Sam? Sam?

Sam: Hey, you are back.

Amanda: Oh, I thought I would have missed you. I mean, with the traffic and everything.

Sam: Yeah, yeah, I figured.

Amanda: You are not leaving right now, are you?

Sam: No, no. I've got some time.

Amanda: Good, I was hoping maybe we could have dinner together.

Sam: Yeah, so was I. I talked to Hilda about that already, so...

Amanda: You did?

Sam: Yeah.

Amanda: Great. Well, why donít you open up a bottle of wine? I'm going to go say hi to Alli. I'll be down.

Sam: Ok.

[Doorbell rings]

Olivia: Hi.

Sam: Hi.

Olivia: One very clean suit.

Sam: Thanks.

Olivia: Three new best sellers to read on the plane.

Sam: It's only a two-hour flight.

Olivia: Soap, shaving cream, toothbrush, toothpaste, shampoo, cream rinse. There you go.

Sam: Yeah, thank you. This is great. Thanks.

Olivia: You're welcome. My pleasure.

Sam: So, I guess I will see you in a couple of weeks.

Olivia: Yeah. Where will you be staying?

Sam: I do not know.

Olivia: Well, listen, a friend of mine knows a wonderful hotel on central park west. It is very reasonable for that area and it has a great view of the park.

Sam: I was going to deal with that when I get to New York. I think I might take a sublet.

Olivia: Hmm. So, I might have to be in New York in the next few weeks myself. I have to see a friend at the city ballet. And, so, I will call you if I happen to be there--

Sam: Olivia--

Olivia: ...Maybe we can go to a matinee or something.

Sam: I do not think that is a good idea.

Olivia: You donít? Well, good luck.

Sharlene: Is there a problem?

Limo driver: No, I just have to pick up Mr. Hudson.

Sharlene: Mr. Hudson, I see.

Limo driver: Sorry for the delay.

Sharlene: No, it is ok. Take your time.

[Car door opens and shuts]

[Giggles]

[Laughs]

[Country music plays] Ha ha ha!

Singer: When you look me over you know you put me to the test nobody else is like you are I think you got to be the best

[Champagne pops open]

Sharlene: [Shrieks] Ha ha ha!

Singer: When you told me I go into cardiac arrest

well, please donít look at me that way it scares me half to death

Sharlene: Perfect.

Singer: 'Cause when you look at me that way

Sharlene: Michael? Care to join me?

Singer: Whoa, yeah, baby yeah, baby whoo

Singer: It holds the key to every heart

Amanda: Good idea.

Sam: Sit.

Amanda: Who was at the door?

Sam: Olivia.

Amanda: At this hour?

Sam: Yeah, she ran some errands for me.

Amanda: Errands?

Sam: Yeah, she insisted.

Amanda: Well, she has nothing better to do?

Sam: Amanda.

Amanda: Never mind. We do not have a lot of time and we are not going to waste any of it talking about her.

Sam: Good.

Amanda: So... you nervous?

Sam: Terrified.

Amanda: Why?

Sam: Why? Well, these are the same critics that crucified me less than a year ago.

Amanda: Sam, your work has changed a lot.

Sam: You think so?

Amanda: Yes, it is much more emotional and much more confident.

Sam: Well, if it has, I have you to thank for that.

Amanda: Oh, come on.

Sam: Yeah, really. It all started when I started painting that portrait of you at Macís cabin.

Amanda: You really feel that way?

Sam: It is going to be the centerpiece for the show.

Amanda: Are you going to sell it?

Sam: No, never.

Amanda: I canít believe that we're sitting here talking like we used to.

Sam: Yeah, I know.

Amanda: I missed you so much.

Singer: Oh

Amanda: Now you're leaving.

[Phone rings]

Sam: Oh. You'd better go get that.

Amanda: Hold that thought, ok?

Sam: Yeah.

Amanda: All right, all right. Yes?

Evan: Amanda, I am sorry to bother you.

Amanda: Evan, I really cannot talk right now.

Evan: Bill Powell walked out.

Amanda: Ok, so tomorrow morning we just find ourselves a new editor.

Evan: Well, he was mad when he left, Amanda, which means that he took all the boards for the premier issues with him.

Amanda: I do not believe this.

Iris: Tell her he walked out because he found out he was working for her.

Evan: Well, as you know, you know, they are due to go to the presses tomorrow, which means you need to be here A.S.A.P., if not before.

Amanda: Just call Iris, all right?

Evan: Amanda, Iris is sitting right next to me.

Iris: Give me the phone. Give me the phone. Thank you. Get yourself over here.

Amanda: Iris, I will be there as soon as I can.

Iris: That better mean now.

Amanda: I have a personal life, Iris.

Iris: Not any more you donít, unless you want to be fired effective immediately.

Amanda: Iris, I will be there as soon as I can.

Sam: Well, sounds like you better go deal with it.

Amanda: No, no. I--it's--oh, never mind. Forget it. Where were we? What were you saying?

Sam: Actually, we weren't saying anything.

Amanda: Oh, that is right. I just canít stand it anymore.

Sam: What?

Amanda: Iris. She yells at me like I'm--I'm irresponsible and she is God's gift to the company. Not to mention the world.

Sam: Well, why donít you go handle it?

Amanda: No, no. I want to be here with you.

Sam: It is ok. I--I should probably be over at the gallery helping Caroline anyway.

Amanda: Really?

Sam: Yeah. So, I guess we should just say good-bye.

Amanda: We were going to just talk.

Sam: It is ok, I will not be gone that long.

Amanda: Will you call?

Sam: Yeah, I told Alli that I would call her at least once a day.

Amanda: When you call Alli, will you talk to me if I'm here?

Sam: Yeah. Take care of Alli and yourself.

Amanda: Good luck. Have a great time.

Sam: I am not so sure about a great time.

Amanda: Have a successful time then, ok?

Sam: Yeah, we will see.

Amanda: This can really be the turning point for you.

Sam: Yeah, we will see.

Amanda: I love you. I hope when you get back, we can start again.

Rachel: Galleries, galleries, galleries, galleries. Hello? Yes, Adrian Blanchard, please. He left? A couple of years ago? Oh, ah, no, I am sorry. I did not know, I--yeah, ok, fine. Thank you. No, I have not been working much in the last few years. But I was wondering--I would like to work at a gallery and... I'd appreciate an opportunity to come by and talk to you about my background. I understand you're one of the finest new galleries in Chicago, and I--yeah. Oh, ok. No, all right. Fine. Thank you. Oh, yes, any time tomorrow. Fine. Ok, I will be there. I'll see you. Thank you very much. Right. Tomorrow. Ok. 9:00. Benoit gallery, right around the corner. Ok, see you then. Thanks a lot. Right, bye. Hey, all right. Ok, so, I have gone through the...

Lucas: Josie, that is one first-class pig. I mean, I am afraid he's going to upstage you. The cow, on the other--you know, with the cow, maybe we have a shot with. I donít know.

Josie: Let me get this straight. I am prettier than the cow but not as pretty as the pig.

Lucas: Josie, that is some pig. What can I tell you?

Josie: John, what are you eating?

John: Breakfast. It is always better at 8:00 at night.

Josie: And when are you planning on having dinner?

John: Let's see, I checked my schedule. I think there is a Thursday in 1992.

Lucas: Josie, while we're here, why donít you show me the things you used to wear while you lived here? You know, everyday stuff.

Josie: You mean, jeans and plaid shirts?

Lucas: That's right. The more farm girl, the better.

Josie: But I thought this was going to be a fashion layout.

Lucas: Please, go, go.

Josie: All right.

Lucas: I would like to talk to you, John. May I sit down?

John: Yeah, pull up a chair.

Lucas: Thanks. Look, I know--I can see how upset Sharlene is.

John: So can I.

Lucas: I try to reassure her, but I am not successful at it. I mean, part of my job is to mold beautiful young women into top models. That involves a very familiar, often intense relationship. Now, I have nothing but respect and affection for Josie. I would never take advantage of her.

John: Oh, we know.

Lucas: Listen, why donít you try and convince Sharlene of that. I mean, frankly, I think that her concern is exaggerated, bordering on the obsessive.

Sharlene: [Laughing] This is too much.

Michael: What is?

Sharlene: Riding in the back of a limo, drinking champagne. I always wanted to do this.

Michael: Well, then, let me say how happy it makes me to be able to make one of your life-long dreams come true.

Sharlene: Is it still exciting, or are you too jaded?

Michael: Well, I still like to drive my own car. Does that mean I'm jaded?

Sharlene: No, it just means you are crazy.

Michael: Well, to tell you the truth, I'm glad we have the car tonight.

Sharlene: You and me both.

Michael: It gives us a chance to talk.

Sharlene: Better than the other night, huh?

Michael: What does that mean?

Sharlene: Well, you were in no shape to talk on New Yearís Eve.

[Clears throat]

Michael: Yeah, I guess I was pretty looped.

Sharlene: Some music?

John: Sure.

[Kenny g music plays]

Sharlene: [Chuckles]

John: Sharlene?

Sharlene: Yeah? Knowing your history with Lucas, what I am about to say, if it's a little too much, you tell me.

Sharlene: What about him?

Michael: Well, you know how hard I have been trying to get information on him and how frustrating it has been.

Sharlene: Well, what's that got to do with me?

Michael: Well, I know how upset you have been about Lucas and Josie.

Sharlene: Yeah.

Michael: But I think that you could really help both of us, actually, if you would be willing to become friends with Lucas again.

Sharlene: Friends?

John: Yeah. Just--well, wait a minute. You tell me if this is too much, now.

Sharlene: No--you mean, close friends?

Michael: Well, I mean close enough to just get him to trust you.

Sharlene: So--so you're not suggesting--

Michael: Ha ha. No, I am not suggesting anything other than just getting close to him, just so we can see what his life is really all about.

Sharlene: Fine.

Michael: You can handle that?

Sharlene: Sure I can. Why not?
