Jamie: Yeah, it's been getting cooler at night.

Vicky: Come here. Ok, we can take it off. We can -- time for a kiss attack!

Vicky: Where's the toes? There? Do you feel better?

[Steven fusses]

Vicky: Oh, you donít? Well, I do. I'm so glad to see my baby. Oh, yeah. Jamie, why did you bring him here?

Jamie: Well, you know, when I got home from the party, he was just -- he was wide awake and grumpy.

Vicky: Oh.

Jamie: Yeah.

Vicky: Well, he seems ok now.

Jamie: Yeah.

Vicky: Donít you? You're ok.

Jamie: Yeah, he does --

Vicky: Oh, you're ok.

Jamie: Now that you're holding him.

Vicky: Well, he must have been pretty grouchy. You've never done this before.

Jamie: Well, he just -- he refused to fall asleep. I mean, I tried everything, all my usual tricks. I tried, you know, the rubbing of the feet. I tried the warm bottle, the boring stories. He wasn't buying any of that.

Vicky: Oh. So you decided to take him for a drive?

Jamie: No. I --

[Steven fusses]

Jamie: I thought that if I -- well, if you had him for a while he might settle down. And I was right. I mean, he's a lot better now than he was before.

Vicky: Hmm. Well, Jamie, I -- never mind.

Jamie: What?

Vicky: I think you'd better go.

Jamie: Can we talk for a while?

Vicky: I -- I donít think we should --

Jamie: No, please. I want to stay -- if it's all right with you.

Iris: Well, I want to thank you very much for the party.

Sharlene: No, you're absolutely right. Nothing could spoil tonight. I've never been happier in my life. Michael, I'm sorry.

Iris: So, you're planning a big church wedding?

Sharlene: Oh, well, John said something about having the -- the wedding in the barn.

Lucas: Hmm.

Iris: What?

Lucas: You live on a farm?

Sharlene: Yes.

Lucas: Well, that sounds peaceful.

Iris: Well, I've never heard of anyone having a wedding in a barn before.

Lucas: Can I -- can I get someone a drink?

John: Well, that can be arranged.

Sharlene: Yeah, see, I have a different kind of celebration in mind. Nothing wrong with that, is there?

John: Nothing at all.

Vicky: Well -- I guess it's all right.

Jamie: Are you going to put him to bed?

Vicky: Yeah. Yeah. I think he'll go right down.

Jamie: Ok.

Vicky: I'll be back in a minute.

Jamie: Ok.

Vicky: I put him in his crib and turned the music box on. And before I could pull the covers over him, he was just out.

Jamie: Oh, good, good. I mean, that's just what he needed.

Vicky: I thought you wanted to talk.

Jamie: You want to play some poker or something?

Vicky: What did you want to talk to me about, Jamie?

Jamie: Well, it's nothing serious. I just thought, you know, while I was here, we might --

Vicky: You didnít come over here to play a game.

Jamie: No, I -- no, I told you, Steven just wouldnít fall asleep.

Vicky: Yeah, I know that's what you said.

Jamie: You donít believe me?

Vicky: Well, I -- I just find it a little hard to believe that nobody in your house could calm him down, not your mother, not your grandmother, not Amanda.

Jamie: You do it better.

Vicky: Well, canít they comfort him? Because I really hate the thought of him being in the house crying all night.

Jamie: No, it's not like that.

Vicky: What is it like?

Jamie: You saw how he was when you took him. I mean, you're his mother.

Vicky: Yes, I am. Nobody can take that away from me, Jamie.

Jamie: Vicky -- Vicky --

Vicky: No matter what happens, I am his mother. It's not just some title that you can get rid of, like wife!

Jamie: This always happens. This always happens. Every time we try to talk, it turns into this.

Vicky: What do you want it to turn into?

Jamie: I wasn't looking for an argument.

Vicky: Ok. What are you looking for, Jamie?

Derek: Caroline, put the gun away.

Caroline: I want an explanation.

Stacey: Isnít it obvious? We came by to see you.

Stacey: The guard let us in and I couldn't find the light switch. Would you please put that gun down? It's scaring me.

Caroline: What do you think you did to me, hearing strange sounds and seeing shadows?

Derek: Ok, so you got spooked, but nothing happened. Caroline, the gun, please.

Caroline: I'm sorry for frightening you.

Stacey: What are you doing with a gun, anyway?

Caroline: There is an art thief roaming around Bay City, you know. And everybody, including the police, thinks it's you.

Derek: They're wrong.

Caroline: Perhaps. Anyway, that's why I got the gun. This is an art gallery, and there are several very expensive pieces here. And plus, I've been staying here late, getting the show ready.

Derek: I see.

Caroline: You said the guard let you in.

Stacey: Yeah, that's right, he did. Yeah, you can call him and ask him.

Caroline: Donít worry, I will. You still haven't told me why you're here.

Derek: When you came charging in here, you said we had better tell you what we were looking for.

Caroline: That's right.

Derek: Well, why that question?

Caroline: I have no idea.

Derek: Well, could it be that there's something here worth finding? Something like the red swan?

John: How are you guys doing? Having a good time? You all have champagne? Hi, Mike.

Michael: Hey, John. You know, funny. I was just standing here thinking about Mom, you know? It's too bad she's sick and had to miss this, but she was awfully thrilled about you and Sharlene. She really likes Sharlene a lot.

John: Well, they get along very well.

Michael: I think it's a little more than that.

John: What do you mean?

Michael: Well, after Mom found out that you and Sharlene were going to get married, she gave me a little call.

John: Yeah? What'd she say?

Michael: Well, first off, she said that she'd been praying that you would propose to Sharlene.

John: No, you donít know. She told Sharlene the same thing.

Michael: God bless her. But, second -- well, she got serious for a moment and she said, "Mike --" she says, "you may have found John, but Sharlene is the one who helped him find himself, and we all owe her a lot."

John: Well, I know I do.

Michael: Sometimes I wonder whether I did the right thing, I mean, dragging you back here.

John: Well, let me reassure you that you did. Although I'm not sure that I ever really thanked you.

Michael: Hey, that's not why I brought it up.

John: No, you need to know that I'm very grateful, because without you, none of this would have been possible.

Michael: Huh. Yeah, well, without me, none of the rough times would have been possible, either.

John: Well, sometimes it's difficult to face your past.

Michael: Well, I had a feeling that you might get through it.

John: You know, before I met Sharlene, there was absolutely no joy whatsoever in my life, you know? I mean, I couldn't feel anything. I got up day after day wondering why I even bothered. I was ashamed of who I was. I felt that there was no future, only guilt, and fear that someone would find out, but Sharlene was never afraid. She was never afraid of the truth. She's got a lot of guts.

Michael: Well, so do you, buddy.

John: Secrets donít control us anymore.

Michael: Secrets do have a way of doing that, donít they?

John: You know, I can tell her things that I swore I'd never tell another human being, and she understands.

Michael: Hey, man, that's because she loves you, fool.

John: Isnít that amazing? And I love her. I can be so open with her, more open than I've ever been with anybody. I know she feels the same way about me.

Michael: Well, hey, I think that's the way it's supposed to be.

John: Yeah.

Michael: Yeah?

John: Together -- together, we are smarter, we're happier, and a whole lot more forgiving. Rather unique, wouldnít you say?

Michael: I'd say that's what it's all about.

John: Mind if I ask you something?

Michael: Shoot.

John: How would you feel about being my best man?

Michael: What's the pay?

John: It's a decent wage.

Michael: I'd be honored.

John: You're hired.

Michael: I'll drink to that.

Donna: Forget the neon, Jake. I want this place to be done in a quiet, tasteful manner. We'll have a lot of beautiful, huge plants --

Jake: Ahem.

Donna: Some antique oriental rugs. And I want custom filing cabinets made, something with an antique --

Jake: Donna, we are going to be shooting videos here, not serving tea and crumpets.

Donna: Here will be the wall to section off my office.

Jake: Your office?

Donna: Yeah.

Jake: Donna, we're partners. I have an equal say in this.

Donna: And I'm funding this -- this venture here.

Jake: There wouldnít be a venture if it wasn't for me. This is a studio, not a salon.

Donna: Jake, for heaven's sakes, I'm trying to create a professional atmosphere.

Jake: But, Donna, what do you need with an office, anyway?

Donna: I plan to be here.

Jake: Doing what?

Donna: Working. I'm a working partner. Hello?

Jake: Wait a minute. You're under the impression that -- that you're going to be working here every day.

Donna: I most certainly am. I have to protect my investment.

Jake: How?

Donna: By managing things around here. That's what our agreement was.

Jake: Donna, when I said you could help out, I didnít say you could take over.

Donna: Help out?

Jake: You're getting what you want. I'm going to stay away from Vicky.

Donna: Yeah, and you see to it that you do, and just remember, this whole business of yours is built on a bribe.

Jake: That seemed to be just fine with you earlier, partner.

Donna: Oh, now, the partnership part -- that's just on paper. As far as I'm concerned, you work for me.

Jake: Hold on. This is me you're talking to. Donít get all high and mighty. You jumped at this deal.

Donna: I most certainly did not!

Jake: Nobody else would give you a shot. Michael wouldnít have anything to do with you!

Donna: Oh, Jake, you're a user and you'll always be a user!

Jake: That's a big compliment coming from you, because as far as users go, you're the queen bee!

Donna: Oh, you shut up! You just shut up right now!

Jake: You listen to me. If we're going to do this, we're going to do it my way.

Donna: Yeah, I've heard those words before.

Jake: Fine, then you know what they mean. Do we have a deal or not?

Caroline: So you think I know something about the stolen statue?

Derek: You're awful jumpy, Caroline.

Caroline: Well, I donít.

Derek: Think hard.

Caroline: I know nothing about its disappearance, if that's what you're implying.

Stacey: No, he wasnít.

Caroline: Everyone thinks you took it.

Derek: I told you before, they're all dead wrong --

Caroline: Well, it wasn't me.

Derek: And I'm going to prove it. Well, how come you're so nervous?

Caroline: Because I donít want to be involved in this.

Stacey: Nobody said that you were.

Caroline: I have never been involved with stolen goods, and I never will be.

Derek: Caroline, look, you want to protect yourself.

Derek: So do I. The only way that I can do that is to find the red swan.

Stacey: I think what he was hoping is that perhaps you had heard something about it through your art circles, that type of thing.

Caroline: I haven't heard anything.

Derek: No rumors?

Caroline: Nothing.

Stacey: Well, then perhaps you could put us in touch with somebody that might handle a piece like that.

Caroline: I'm sorry. I canít help you on that score either.

Derek: Caroline, my freedom's on the line here.

Caroline: Derek, I donít travel in those circles. Now, if you've got everything that you wanted, please, I'd really like to forget about all this and lock up and go home.

Stacey: I am really sorry that we bothered you.

Caroline: Well, seeing you found your way in here, I'm quite sure you will find your way out. Good night.

Lucas: I'm over here. Every time I look at you, you have one eye on Michael Hudson.

Nathan: He said the woman said she had papers for you.

Caroline: Papers? Did she show them to Murphy?

Nathan: I donít know, ma'am.

Caroline: Oh, I see. Did he say anything more about them?

Nathan: Just that the man was an artist.

Caroline: Good. Ok. Thanks a lot, Nathan. Oh, and by the way, please -- I would really appreciate it that in the future people waited outside. Good night. Stacey said nothing about the papers. I knew they were lying.

Caroline: Hello, it's me. Yeah, I have to see you. No, it canít wait. It's about that damn swan. Yeah.

Vicky: You actually think you have the right to ask me about Evan?

Jamie: Sure, I'm asking. You paraded him in front of me all night long.

Vicky: I did not parade anything, Jamie.

Jamie: Well, I just canít shut off my feelings that easily.

John: Yeah, they did -- cigars, dancing girls, the whole bit.

John: Well, you were just very quiet in the car on the way home.

Michael: I could find her when I needed her. You want to tell me where you've been?

Stacey: I donít think this appraisal's going to do us much good.

Derek: Caroline knows something. She ran for cover the minute I mentioned that swan.

Stacey: I know. We should have tried to get more out of her. It's just a matter of time before she discovers that we have this.

Derek: I didnít handle her well at all.

Stacey: No, you were fine.

Derek: No, she had this in her desk and she stands there and she lies right to our faces. It really ticked me off.

Stacey: Derek, it's ok. It's over with. Now all we have to do is figure out a plan.

Derek: Not tonight.

Stacey: Yes. We have to decide what our plan is for tomorrow.

Derek: Well, it can wait. I think you ought to go back home now and get some rest.

Stacey: You're trying to get rid of me?

Derek: No, I'm not trying to do that.

Stacey: Yes, you are. You're going to do something without me, aren't you?

Derek: I'm looking out for you, Stacey.

Stacey: Well, I'm not leaving until you tell me what it is. I mean it.

Derek: All right. There's a guy coming over and I donít want you here when he shows up.

Stacey: Well, what kind of guy?

Derek: Somebody I knew when I was a kid.

Derek: He could. He's got a lot of connections, so --

Stacey: What, is he a big shot?

Derek: In his world, yeah.

Stacey: And he's coming here?

Derek: He owes me.

Stacey: Oh, my God. You're talking about that guy that -- that set you up when you were a kid.

Derek: Yes --

Stacey: That --

Derek: Yeah, yeah.

Stacey: Cal.

Derek: So you think maybe you --

Stacey: No. He's the one who made you take the heat for him when you were his lookout for that burglary.

Derek: Yeah.

Stacey: Everything you've ever told me about him is bad, Derek. You think you can handle him?

Derek: Yes, but I donít want him seeing you.

Stacey: Why?

Derek: What, are you crazy? Because it's too dangerous.

Man: Hey, Derek, where the hell are you?

Derek: Oh, gosh, that's him. Come on.

Stacey: What do you want me to do?

Derek: Damn. You canít leave now, so just hide back here and be quiet. In here, Cal.

Cal: You're really coming up in the world, huh, Derek?

Derek: That's real funny, Cal. Thanks for coming. Hey, do you want a brew or something?

Cal: Nah. I'm off the sauce.

Derek: Ok, then grab a seat. Grab a seat.

Cal: You look good, kid. Jail must agree with you.

Derek: You heard about that, huh?

Cal: You're joking, right? Of course I heard.

Derek: Well, it was a bum rap, Cal.

Cal: Yeah, it usually is.

Derek: It's this swan statue is worth a bundle and I was trying to steal it, but somebody got there first.

Cal: Yeah, from what I heard, that bird is way out of your league.

Derek: What else did you hear?

Cal: That the cops nailed you. Hey, maybe you got a guilty look or something, huh?

Derek: Yeah, most people think so. You think I could lose it?

Cal: Ah, maybe, with practice.

Derek: That's exactly what I had in mind.

Cal: You want to do some business?

Derek: I'm not doing anything else.

Cal: I knew you had potential. I missed you, kid. And you keep your mouth shut. I like that.

Derek: You haven't changed a bit, Cal.

Cal: Yeah? Good. I donít plan to. Yeah, you always were a real individual. I mean, take this place. From the outside, a dump. But in here, it's a whole different story.

Derek: I like to keep a low profile.

Cal: Smart. But appearances can be deceiving. You mind if I take a look around?

John: First fire of the season.

Sharlene: It's a perfect night for it. You know that?

John: I thought so.

Sharlene: I donít know. I mean, maybe it's living on the farm. I know everything will be back in the spring.

John: I'll be back in the spring, because now I feel a part of something that is so meaningful to me. It means everything to me.

Donna: I haven't decided.

Donna: You annoyed?

Michael: Yes. You walked out on my brother's party.

Donna: I didnít walk out.

Michael: You snuck out because you didnít get your way.

Donna: You got your way, Michael. You fired me. Did you expect me to say "thank you"?

Michael: No. I expected you to stay and help me host the party.

Donna: Well, maybe I'm sick of being the perfect hostess.

Michael: You owed that much to John and Sharlene.

Donna: Why? I donít think they minded in the least.

Michael: I minded. I expected more from you.

Donna: But not much more, right? Just enough to run a good party, right?

Michael: You really are angry about this work thing, aren't you?

Donna: No, it's more than that. I'm just sick of being squeezed into roles and doing what people like you think I should be doing.

Michael: Oh. Now this is my fault?

Donna: Michael, you may not think that I can do much, but I just might surprise you. I just might surprise a lot of people.

Michael: Donna, come on. What -- would you talk --?

[Doorbell rings]

Michael: I'll get it.

Michael: Caroline.

Caroline: Michael, we --

Michael: Shh. Caroline --

Caroline: Michael, we have to talk.

Michael: No, we canít talk here.

Caroline: You donít know what I've been through tonight.

Michael: Look, we were supposed to talk about this in the morning.

Caroline: I know that's what you wanted. But you got me into this red swan mess and you've got to get me out of it.

Derek: What difference does it make what the place looks like? It's good enough to crash in. Besides, I got some important business I want to discuss with you.

Cal: I'm listening.

Derek: Well, like I said, it's important, so are you staying or going?

Cal: Keep your shirt on. When I haven't heard from somebody in a while, I check them out. Nothing personal.

Derek: Well, what you see is what you get. If it makes you happy, look all you want.

Cal: Look, I got no idea which side you're playing, Derek.

Derek: They didnít put me away for being an altar boy, Cal.

Cal: No, but maybe you made a deal to get out.

Derek: Is that what you think?

Cal: Hey, well, you wouldnít be the first to try and deliver me.

Derek: What, you think I'm wearing a wire, huh? You think I trust the cops?

Cal: I cover my bases. That's how I got where I am today.

Derek: Yeah?

Cal: Yeah. And I make sure I can trust my friends.

Derek: No, I donít have friends. I've been operating on my own for a real long time.

Cal: Yeah, well, maybe it's time for a change.

Derek: You've been a big influence on my life, Cal.

Cal: No kidding?

Derek: No, and I donít forget that. That's why I called you -- because I got this job I want to do and there could be some real money in it, but I canít do it by myself.

Cal: Go on.

Derek: I want you to help me find that bird.

Cal: It's red hot.

Derek: I donít care if it burns our hands off. I want it.

Cal: What's the big interest?

Derek: It's personal. Can you find it?

Cal: Possibly.

Derek: Come on, Cal. I know you're the best. Donít hold out on me. Come on.

Cal: I want a cut.

Derek: No problem, no sweat. I told you, I -- I remember what people do for me.

Cal: Mm-hmm. I expect some favors.

Derek: Understood.

Cal: Big favors, and you better come through.

Cal: All right, I'll get back to you. It shouldnít be more than a couple of days.

Derek: You're going to be proud of me, Cal.

Cal: Listen, the street's in your blood. You belong with us.

Derek: Right.

Cal: I'm glad you realize that.

Derek: I'll talk to you later.

Stacey: Derek?

Derek: Damn that sleazeball! He's worse than I remember him.

Stacey: Look, are you ok?

Derek: Yeah. I just canít stand being in the same room with him.

Stacey: At least you kept your cool until he left.

Derek: Yeah. Well, I think he bought my act. This must be a lot more than you bargained for.

Stacey: Donít worry about me. Can you handle him? He set you up the last time.

Derek: He wonít do it again, because I donít care what Cal thinks. My future is not on the streets.

Stacey: And besides, you're not working alone anymore.

Derek: I know.

Derek: We canít do this.

Stacey: Why?

Derek: You're going to have to go.

Stacey: What's the matter?

Derek: Cal might come back.

Stacey: Why would he come back?

Derek: Because he's known for pulling that kind of a stunt.

Stacey: So what do you want me to do? You want me to go out the back way?

Derek: You'll have to, because he'll be watching me now and we have to be careful.

Stacey: Well, then why donít I just stay over?

Derek: Oh. You have to go now. We donít have a choice. Come on.

Stacey: You know, I did not picture tonight ending like this.

Derek: I know. Come on, I'll walk you to your car. I want to check things out down there anyway.

Stacey: All I do lately is think about you and I and when we're going to be together.

Derek: We will be soon. I promise. Come on.

Caroline: Derek and Stacey were really determined.

Michael: Were they there long enough to do much more than go through the desk?

Caroline: I donít think so. I donít know what else they found, but I know they found the appraisal. I'm certain of that.

Michael: Well, donít worry. They canít do much with that.

Caroline: Are you serious? They're trying to tie me to the red swan. They could ruin me. They can go to the police.

Michael: I donít think they'll go that route.

Caroline: If word gets out that I have anything to do with stolen art --

Michael: Hey, donít worry. Trust me, no one will find out anything.

Caroline: I want out.

Michael: Will you stop worrying? Whatever Derek and Stacey know or think they know, I'll take care of them.

Vicky: With me, it's all or nothing. You chose nothing.

Jamie: I was trying to do what I thought was right.

Vicky: Yeah?

Jamie: Yeah.

Vicky: Well, so was I, believe it or not.

Jamie: I'm starting to.

Vicky: Jamie, you know it doesn't matter, because it's always going to come down to you do what's right and I donít.

Jamie: We're so different.

Vicky: Yes, we are. And you couldn't handle it, so you kicked me out of your cozy little life, so now you can stay out of mine.

Jamie: Is that what you want?

Vicky: It's the way it is. We're getting a divorce. I've accepted that.

Jamie: I noticed.

Vicky: It's not going to break me, Jamie. If that's what you're waiting for, forget it.

Jamie: Always playing tough.

Vicky: I'm not playing, not this time. It's over. So I donít want you asking any more questions about what I choose to do with my life. Do you understand that?

Jamie: Oh, I understand.

Jamie: You know, I didnít expect it to be this difficult.

Vicky: Why? You got what you wanted.

Jamie: I'm not sure I did. I'm not sure about much of anything these days.

Vicky: I'll get Steven for you.

Jamie: Oh, thanks. But I'll -- I'll pick him up in the morning. I want him with you tonight.
