Reuben: Ok. All right. Yours, too. Anything else I can get you? Everything good? All right. Oh, excuse me, excuse me. Josie, wait up, wait up. So, where you going?
Josie: Um -- I have a commercial audition. Big residuals. I got to go.
Reuben: Oh, oh, really? No, no. No, no, I donít buy that. We live in the same apartment, remember? Josie, the phone hasn't rung in three days.
Reuben: Josie, come back. I mean, "The Lilly Girard show" is about to come on in a few minutes.
Josie: Who cares?
Reuben: Well, Matt might call in.
Reuben: So -- you're going to be right here, you're going to call in, and you're going to pray that Matt Cory gives you another chance.
["Music of the night" plays]
Lilly: Welcome to "the Lilly Girard show."
Matt: Ms. Girard?
Lilly: I'm your host, Lilly Girard --
Matt: Ms. Girard!
Lilly: Ugh, boring, boring. And he had a psychotic --
Matt: Ms. Girard! Ms. Girard! Ms. -- Ms. Girard!
Lilly: We'll do something in five minutes.
Woman: I know that.
Lilly: Look, relax. We can do --
Woman: Just go with --
Matt: Ms. Girard --
Lilly: What are they doing in here?
Matt: I need your help.
Lilly: Ann, do something. Get rid of them!
Ann: Excuse me. I'm sorry --
Olivia: No, look, just listen to us, ok?
Lilly: My show is about to go on!
Matt: I know, that's why we're here. You have to put me on the air. I have to talk to Riviera.
Evan: I suggest that we leave your father's chair unoccupied.
Evan: As a symbol to the other board members.
Sam: That Macís presence is still in the room.
Evan: And very much with you and Rachel.
Amanda: Good idea. Maybe that will help. I'm so nervous.
Sam: Who wouldnít be?
Amanda: I canít believe -- I canít believe Vicky owns that huge block of stock.
Evan: I donít want you to worry about that, Amanda.
Amanda: How can I not worry about it?
Evan: You cannot let it affect your presentation tomorrow.
Sam: Wait a second. Does Vicky know about this?
Amanda: I'm sure she does.
Sam: She didnít say anything, and she's not exactly subtle.
Evan: Samís right.
Sam: She probably has an enormous portfolio. She probably doesn't even know what she owns.
Evan: There's one way to find out.
Sam: Yeah, pay her a visit and sound her out.
Evan: It's got to be quick.
Amanda: Iris may already know about this.
Rachel: Forget it.
Rachel: You are all to leave Vicky strictly alone.
Lucas: Reginald did very well by you, Vicky. He left you a very large block of stocks.
Vicky: I have other things on my mind right now, Mr. Lucas.
Lucas: I can understand that, but --
Vicky: Money is the least of my concerns.
Vicky: Excuse me.
Iris: Hello, Vicky.
Vicky: Oh. This is wonderful. I am really not up for visitors. You were just leaving, right?
Iris: Oh, look, I wonít stay long. I realize that you've been going through a very bad time, and I just wanted to say how sorry I am.
Lucas: What are you doing here?
Iris: Have you told her yet?
Lucas: I'm working on i
Iris: Your grandfather left you a large lot of stock.
Vicky: What are you two getting at?
Iris: Reginald had the most delicious sense of humor. You know, what he left you could make you very influential in the future of Cory Publishing and the Cory family.
Matt: Please, would you just let me talk to her?
Lilly: I want you out, young man. I donít know who you are. And furthermore, I'm not really --
Ann: Ms. Girard, look --
Lilly: Look, Ann, call the guard.
Ann: No, listen. Look, he mentioned the Riviera girl before. Oh, look, and, here -- take a look at the mail report you asked for. Right --
Lilly: This is all about Riviera?
Lilly: Extraordinary. I've never seen such a response to a caller.
Matt: Ms. Girard --
Lilly: It's as if the whole city has opened their hearts.
Ann: I know.
Lilly: Especially since --
Ann: I know.
Matt: Ms. Girard! That's me! Hi, I'm the boyfriend, right?
Olivia: Him. He.
Matt: Yeah, listen, I just need a few words with her.
Matt: Yes, I swear it. Now, can I talk to her, please?
Lilly: No, I canít. It's policy.
Matt: Well, canít you break your policy for once?
Lilly: No, the whole show will get out of hand.
Olivia: Or your ratings could go right through the roof.
Lilly: Look, I want both of you to leave. I've got such a headache. What are you talking about, my ratings will go through the roof?
Olivia: You saw the mail. Riviera and her problems have obviously touched people.
Lilly: Well, it's not a bad story. It's kind of nice.
Olivia: The listeners out there want a happy ending, Ms. Girard. And you have it in your power to make that happen.
Evan: Rachel, I understand your feelings.
Evan: Well, but I think it's a little too dangerous just to let it go.
Amanda: So do I.
Evan: I mean, Vickyís going to find out how much power she has with that stock. Iris will make sure of it.
Rachel: Fine, then they can deal with each other.
Evan: This is the control of Cory we're talking about. Iris gets it --
Sam: Rachel, it wouldnít be a bad idea to be prepared.
Amanda: If it keeps Iris out of the company, why not go ahead and follow it up?
Rachel: Vicky is your brother's wife.
Amanda: She also happens to be a major stockholder.
Rachel: I canít believe it's come to this.
Amanda: It has.
Rachel: I'm not going to do anything that's going to make it more difficult for Jamie than it already is.
Amanda: Mom, if Iris teams up with Vicky, do you realize what we're going to have to do?
Rachel: Either the board members want me to run this company or they donít.
Evan: Rachel, I think your point of view is just being a little naive.
Rachel: It's being realistic. It's a little late in the game for any public relations. It's not going to change anything, Evan.
Rachel: I suggest we get to work.
Vicky: You've got to be kidding.
Iris: I never kid about my father's company.
Vicky: I have shares?
Lucas: You're a major stockholder.
Vicky: I canít believe it.
Iris: I canít, either, but there you are.
Lucas: You not only have stock, you have power.
Iris: And there's a very important board meeting tomorrow.
Vicky: Yes, I know.
Iris: What do you mean, you know?
Vicky: Jamie told me all about it.
Iris: Oh, yes, of course he would've.
Vicky: You and Rachel are going head to head, right?
Iris: I'm trying to regain my position with the company, and Rachel and Amanda are doing everything to keep me out of it, yes.
Vicky: And you're with her.
Lucas: I respect Iris. And I admire Rachel. But "Sophisticate" is the determining factor for me.
Vicky: The new magazine.
Iris: My new magazine.
Vicky: What difference does a magazine make?
Lucas: Iris is offering it to Cory.
Iris: This is the finest publication of the decade, and I want Cory to have it.
Lucas: It's going to be a financial and critical success.
Iris: And it's just what Daddy's company needs.
Lucas: All the board members I talked to agree.
Vicky: Well, so it looks like you're in, Iris.
Lucas: Well, on the other hand, there is a group of board members who are intensely loyal to Rachel.
Iris: The old guard, with the emphasis on the "old."
Lucas: Could be a close vote.
Vicky: Which is where I come in, right?
Iris: Yes. You could be extremely influential.
Lucas: If you choose.
Iris: You hold a substantial amount of stock and you could swing the vote.
Vicky: Towards you.
Iris: Or against Rachel. You know, I had the feeling you'd be interested.
Vicky: There is one thing I'm curious about.
Iris: What's that?
Vicky: What makes you think I would do anything for you, Iris?
Iris: Because I think we're alike.
Vicky: How do you figure that?
Iris: We both know what we want and we go after it. I admire that.
Vicky: Why would you? It hasn't worked for either one of us. You're out on your ear at Cory and I've lost my husband, probably my son.
Iris: Yes. And who do you think is responsible for both those situations, hmm? Rachel Cory.
Vicky: Oh, you think she planned all this?
Iris: Rachel has spent a lifetime trying to push me out, and now she is doing the same to you.
Iris: Now that Daddy's dead, she wants all the children all around her.
Vicky: And she's got them all back in the mansion.
Iris: Sam and Amanda have moved in, and now Jamie.
Vicky: With Steven.
Iris: Yeah, Rachel seems to be closing ranks. She wants us on the outside looking in. But it doesn't have to be that way, Vicky.
Vicky: Oh, yeah?
Iris: No. We can fight her, you and I. Help me, Vicky. Help yourself.
Lucas: It's getting late, Iris.
Iris: It is?
Lucas: Yes. I think we've taken enough of Vickyís time.
Iris: Yes, perhaps we have.
Lucas: Hope we haven't given you too much to think about, Vicky.
Vicky: Too much?
Lucas: We're certainly not trying to tell you what to do.
Iris: Of course not.
Lucas: We want you to know what your options are.
Iris: That's right.
Lucas: And we'd like you to be there tomorrow.
Iris: At the board meeting.
Lucas: In case we needed you to express your opinions.
Iris: About what's best for the Cory stockholders.
Vicky: I'll be around.
Iris: Good. I knew -- I knew I could count on you.
Ada: I figured the powers that be would be working late tonight, so I asked Sharky to whip up a working-late-tonight special.
Sam: Oh, Ada, you are a lifesaver. I am starved.
Ada: No kidding. Sam Fowler, the painter who ate Manhattan, is hungry.
Amanda: It looks delicious, grandma.
Ada: Rachel? We got a big feast here. Get it while it's hot.
Rachel: Yeah, not right now, Mom. Maybe later.
Evan: Rachel? I've been going over these financial reports, and if you'd prefer, I'll handle that part of the presentation for you.
Rachel: Why would I prefer that?
Evan: Because you may not have a grasp of the figures the way Mac did.
Rachel: I'm not bad with figures, Evan.
Evan: Oh, I'm not saying that. It's just that Mac always made it seem like he had them in his head.
Rachel: Fine. All right, you take over. What else?
Evan: Now, this should brief you on any questions you're likely to get, just in case some of the hard-liners give you any trouble.
Rachel: Thank you.
Evan: And I also think we should firm up Iris' position on the agenda.
Rachel: I thought you had already given her --
Evan: Oh, I did, but strategically, maybe you would like to put her maybe closer to the middle or --
Rachel: Whatever you say, Evan.
Evan: Well, then I think the position where she is suits us best, and it certainly gives you the last word.
Rachel: Fine. Then it's all settled.
Evan: Ok, there's one other thing. I'd like to go over this profit log sheet.
Amanda: You know, Mom, you haven't seen -- you haven't seen the slide show that Samís done, have you?
Rachel: That's right, I havenít.
Amanda: It's brilliant -- and it isnít just his wife speaking. I canít wait for you to see it. "'Brava' for the 1990s."
Sam: Yeah, catchy title, huh?
Amanda: You know, our board is going to be so enthused about "Brava" they're not even going to remember the name of Iris' magazine.
Sam: Rachel, I'll set it up for you after you're finished with Evan.
Rachel: Ok, thanks.
Evan: All right, I think we've pretty much covered everything except for one important thing.
Rachel: Yes, what's that?
Evan: The votes we get we can count on, we're fine. But it's necessary that you keep the meeting under control at all times.
Rachel: Under control?
Evan: Yes, Iris is going to try to take it away from you. I've seen her operate.
Rachel: I have seen her operate, too, Evan, probably a lot longer than you have.
Evan: Well, I'm talking about, if she gets the floor, she's going to wax it.
Rachel: I know what you meant.
Amanda: You can do it, Mom, just like Daddy did.
Evan: Well, Mac always gave the impression that he was totally open to anything. But he ran the proceedings with an iron hand.
Amanda: All he had to do was give them that eye, and calmed everything right down.
Evan: Listen, I've got an idea. Rachel, why donít you just try your opening remarks with us?
Rachel: Evan --
Amanda: That's a great idea. Mom, you can rehearse in front of a surefire audience.
Rachel: All right.
Rachel: Good morning, friends and board members.
Rachel: I canít do this.
Ada: Take your time, honey.
Rachel: I canít do this. I'm not Mac.
Amanda: What's the matter with her?
Sam: That's great, Evan. Now she's really ready for tomorrow.
Evan: I was just doing my job, Sam.
Sam: She's strung-out, man.
Evan: I think we're all strung-out to some degree or another.
Sam: You were too hard on her, Evan, and you didnít need to be.
Evan: Well, if I was, I'm sorry. I never meant to hurt her. I was just --
Ada: I'm going to go talk to her.
Evan: No, Ada let me take care of it.
Amanda: Evan --
Evan: Look, I'm the one that made her leave this room. Let me be the one to straighten things out.
Evan: Rachel --
Rachel: Evan, I just want to be left alone for a few minutes, all right?
Evan: Ok, I'll call it off.
Rachel: What? The board meeting?
Rachel: No, you wonít.
Evan: It's not important, Rachel.
Rachel: What do you mean, it's not important? It's very important.
Evan: It's not the most important thing right now.
Rachel: I'm not going to start that way, Evan. I'm not going to start by retreating.
Evan: Well, then let me do something, Rachel.
Rachel: What? What do you want?
Evan: Look, I'm the one that made you run out of that room because I've been pushing you all along and I've been pushing you too hard.
Rachel: All right, all right. It's all right, Evan.
Evan: No, it's not all right. Because I've been treating this like it's just an everyday problem for me to deal with. I've been insensitive to your needs. We both know I have.
Rachel: Look, it's all right. We've all been under a lot of pressure, ok? I just need a few minutes. Is that so much to ask?
Evan: Ok, so what are you going to do? Are you going to pull yourself together and then just walk right out there and act like nothing has ever happened?
Rachel: I'm going to try, Evan.
Evan: My mother used to work here, didnít she? I was going through some records and I found her name.
Rachel: Yes, she did. She worked for "Brava."
Evan: She didnít tell me that, I stumbled on it. She work for you?
Rachel: No. Mac and I were separated at the time. Mac gave her the job on the magazine.
Evan: Is that when they got together?
Evan: She never told me that.
Rachel: Well, maybe she --
Evan: Well, we both know why she never told me. She never felt a responsibility to anybody but herself.
Rachel: Evan, I would just like to have a few minutes alone, ok?
Evan: Rachel, I have been wanting to tell you something for a long time.
Evan: This may not be the right time, but I'm going to give it a shot. Now, I understand why you had to do what you did to her because you're the kind of woman that goes -- I mean, you're a wife, you're a mother. I mean, you go to the wall for the someoneís that you love. But I never knew there were women like that till I met you.
Rachel: Evan --
Evan: And I'm sorry if I've been pushing you too hard, if I've made you feel like you have to be like Mac. But if you want this company and you want to run it, I want you to do it your way. And I'll tell you what, I'll do everything in my power to make it possible. Because I owe you. Now, when I came here, I had revenge as a motive, but that's different now. Why? Because of you. Rachel, you saved me from my mother the same way that you saved Mac.
Rachel: Why couldn't I do it again? Why couldn't I do it again?
Sam: Why has he been in there so long? What's he doing to her now?
Sam: All that guy cares about is that damn board meeting.
Amanda: Somebody has to. The future of this company depends on that board meeting.
Sam: What if your mother's just not up for it right now, Amanda? What happens then?
Evan: She says she needs some time alone.
Sam: Is she going to go through with it tomorrow?
Evan: She says she will.
Sam: She wants to, or you want her to?
Evan: She wants to.
Amanda: She's been holding up so well.
Ada: Too well.
Amanda: What do you mean?
Ada: She hasn't given herself time to grieve. When you lose a husband, especially a husband like Mac, you canít keep up the pace that she's been keeping up.
Evan: Look, I know I look like the bad guy here.
Amanda: No, donít --
Evan: But I just donít want Iris to freeze Rachel out of Cory Publishing, and unfortunately, that means that we have to be ready tomorrow.
Ada: I'll go try and talk to her.
Sam: It's time to take a break. Anybody want something to eat?
Amanda: I lost my appetite.
Evan: I think I'll pass. Now, I'm going to go against Rachelís wishes. I'm going to go see Vicky, since she is the unknown factor.
Amanda: I think you're right. We canít afford to take any chances. Out of all of us, you're the only one that can approach her.
Evan: Ok. I'll be back later.
Amanda: What are you going to say to her?
Evan: I donít know yet, Amanda. Just wish me luck.
Ada: Rachel? Rachel, honey? It might help if we talked about it. Rachel?
Iris: Of course she's on our side.
Lucas: I'm not so sure.
Iris: Oh, Vicky was practically salivating at the thought of paying Rachel back.
Lucas: Yeah, but what happens when she has some time to think about it?
Iris: Why are you being so pessimistic?
Lucas: I'm not being pessimistic. I'm being realistic. She's in a custody battle with the Coryís.
Lucas: Well, maybe she doesn't want to get further into their bad graces.
Iris: Fortunately for us, prudence is not one of Vickyís strong points. She's impulsive and she's demanding.
Lucas: You're right, just like you.
Iris: Well, thank you very much. Now, it's getting late. And it's going to be a big day. It's going to be a great day.
Lucas: We'll see.
Iris: We're going to win. I can feel it. Anyway, it's late. So I'll see you in the morning.
Lucas: I'm not going anywhere.
Iris: What -- what do you mean?
Lucas: Got a long night ahead of us.
Iris: What -- what are you talking about?
Lucas: Your speech, what else? I want to hear it, word for word.
Matt: What the hell is taking her so long?
Olivia: Lilly's trying to make up her mind.
Matt: I thought she already did that.
Olivia: Can you see her?
Matt: Yeah. Oh. She just gave me a dirty look.
Olivia: You're being paranoid.
Matt: I am not. I'm being realistic. The lady hates me.
Olivia: That's ridiculous.
Matt: No, it isnít. Did she smile at me once when we were in there?
Olivia: Why should she smile at you? Matthew, we barged into her office and put her on the spot.
Matt: Exactly my point. Why should she let me on the air? I barged into her office and I put her on the spot.
Olivia: Will you please try not to panic?
Matt: Not to panic? What's not to panic? There's only two minutes to the air show.
Olivia: Ok, here she comes. Ok, she's going back in.
Matt: Oh -- what if she says no? What if she says yes and I make a complete fool out of myself?
Matt: What if she says yes and -- and Josie doesn't even hear the air show? Then it's a complete waste of time.
Olivia: Matthew --
Matt: What if she says yes, Josie hears the air show but doesn't call in? Then it's a complete waste of time.
Olivia: Will you please calm down?
Matt: Yes, I'll calm down, I'll calm down. I got to calm down. If I get on there, I'll speak erratic, I'll stutter, I'll --
Olivia: You're going to be terrific.
Matt: I have to. This might be my last chance. I never thought I'd feel this way.
Olivia: What way?
Matt: This way. This way. I -- I thought I was a little too cool to let my emotions for someone rule my life. You know, like a movie with a lead actor, he's crazy about the woman he loves, he canít have her --
Matt: I thought I -- I thought if I was in that position I'd -- you know, I'd be cool about it, I'd meet new people, I'd talk, and I'd be fine.
Olivia: You were wrong, huh?
Matt: No matter what I do -- no matter what I do, she's with me, morning, noon, and night. All I want to concentrate on is finding her and telling her how much I love her. I feel like a fool.
Olivia: You're not a fool, Matthew.
Matt: Come on, Olivia, let's admit it. It's not that cool.
Olivia: So who cares about cool?
Matt: No, and we all know that guys are more attractive when they're detached, independent --
Olivia: Oh, I donít know. Romeo was pretty attractive.
Matt: May I ask why we're invoking Romeo in all this?
Olivia: Because. I just realized why you were so angry with me, when you wanted me to read "Romeo and Juliet" and I wouldnít. I just figured it out, that -- that you wanted me to see the passion in those two people. And that if I could understand that, I could take it into my audition. But I didnít and I wouldnít, because I didnít understand it. Until now.
Matt: I'm not sure I get what you're saying.
Olivia: Watching you and listening to you talk about Josie, well, I realize that it does exist -- you know, that somebody can feel that kind of intense love for someone else.
Matt: Oh, here she comes. Quick, get right here.
Lilly: You'd better get in here, Matthew. We're about ready to go on the air.
Matt: Oh, thank you!
Josie: Reuben, I wish you would just let this die.
Reuben: No, you're going to sit right here and you're going to pick up that phone, too.
Josie: No, I'm not.
Reuben: Whoa, whoa -- 2 1/2 minutes and counting.
Josie: Reuben, it was a stupid idea in the first place.
Reuben: It was a fantastic idea, and this time you're not going to blow it, neither.
Tess: What was a fantastic idea?
Reuben: Josie calling in to "the Lilly Girard show."
Josie: I'm not picking up that phone.
Reuben: Oh, you will if Matt calls in.
Tess: Why would he try again?
Reuben: Tess, back off, ok?
Josie: See, he wonít call.
Reuben: He will. He will.
Tess: The woman hung up on him.
Reuben: You donít know Matt Cory, all right? I mean, the boy just donít take no for an answer.
Tess: You mean he has no pride.
Reuben: No, that is not what I said, ok?
Josie: Reuben --
Tess: Well, she treats a man like that and he keeps coming around?
Josie: Tess --
Reuben: Because this is true love that we're talking about. Evidently --
Josie: Reuben --
Reuben: This is something that you donít know nothing about.
Josie: Reuben --
Tess: There's a difference between being in love and being a fool.
Josie: Would you two quit talking like I'm not here?
Reuben: So what are you trying to say, huh? Ok, I'm very sorry. I'm very sorry we excluded you.
Lilly: Welcome to "the Lilly Girard show," ladies and --
Josie: I'm not interested, Reuben.
Reuben: Listen, listen.
Lilly: I'm your host, Lilly Girard. Now, folks, I'm going to cut right to the chase here.
Reuben: Oh, ok.
Lilly: As those of you who tune in regularly may know, we recently had two young lovers on the show.
Reuben: This is probably you. Listen.
Lilly: Riviera is what she calls herself --
Reuben: You see? You see? It is you. Listen.
Lilly: And she must be some catch because her boyfriend's been searching for her all over this city for weeks and weeks.
Reuben: You hear that?
Lilly: Well, much to my surprise and delight, they've captured New York's tough heart.
Reuben: I hope you're proud of yourself.
Lilly: Last week the young man heard her voice and called in. But much to his disappointment, she hung up --
Reuben: Dumb, dumb, dumb --
Lilly: And he's dying to talk to you, Riviera, so here he is.
Reuben: He's there! He's there! Oh -- Matt's there!
Matt: Riviera, I know you're out there listening. I want you to know I love you.
Reuben: Do you hear that? The boy say he loves you. Now, what more do you need?
Matt: I love you. Would you please just call in and tell me where you are? This is the first time I can remember.
Evan: Hi. I was sort of driving by, and I know it's late, but I saw your --
Vicky: Light on?
Vicky: Come in.
Evan: I heard what happened with Jamie and Steven.
Vicky: News certainly travels quickly around here.
Evan: But I want you to know how sorry I am.
Vicky: It's nice of you to say. I almost believe you.
Vicky: After the scene at Staceyís, you were nice to me, too. And then there wasn't anything in it for you.
Evan: Because you looked like you needed a friend.
Vicky: Do I look like that now? Is that why you came by?
Vicky: Well, you obviously didnít come by just to offer your sympathy.
Evan: No, but I am sorry for what happened, and I do have another motive.
Vicky: Let me guess. My block of Cory stock?
Evan: Well, you're obviously aware of your holdings.
Vicky: Very aware.
Evan: The meeting tomorrow is incredibly important to Cory.
Evan: Everything is at stake.
Vicky: Yes, Iris and Lucas were here earlier.
Evan: I was afraid of that.
Vicky: They're all atwitter about what might happen tomorrow.
Evan: Oh, I can just imagine. And I can just imagine that you are not feeling too charitable toward the Coryís.
Evan: Listen, I canít tell you what to think or to do.
Vicky: That's right.
Evan: But I hope that you'll attend the meeting tomorrow.
Vicky: And back Rachel?
Evan: If you want what's best for Cory.
Vicky: Why should I?
Evan: Because, Vicky, no matter what happens between you and Jamie, Steven is always going to be a part of the Cory family. And one day Cory Publishing is going to be his, because he's Rachel Coryís grandson and she'll see to that. So donít hurt your son. Donít lose that opportunity. Donít do that to him.
Lucas: What's this?
Iris: It's my speech. Take it home and read it in bed.
Lucas: Speeches are to be spoken.
Iris: Well, then, you better show up tomorrow, hmm?
Lucas: Come on, we donít have time for these niceties. I want to hear your speech now.
Lucas: Please? You donít need that.
Iris: Ok, ok, ok, ok. Fellow Cory stockholders, you all know that I was responsible for the attempted takeover, but you donít know my reasons. I'd like to tell you those reasons and I'd like you to understand them, just as my father did before he died. And, of course, he showed his forgiveness by giving me 1/3 of his stock in Cory Publishing.
Lucas: Forget it.
Lucas: It's lies.
Iris: It is not!
Lucas: And everybody in the room will know it.
Iris: Look, I'm telling the truth. I said it was my fault.
Lucas: Come on, stop sugarcoating it. You just look them in the eye and tell them the absolute truth and then go on. Tell them what you did and that's it! No more of that sentimental claptrap about "Daddy." Talk to them about the future. You are the future, right?
Iris: You'd better believe it.
Lucas: Good, that's better. Now, how much did the earnings rise after you joined the company?
Iris: I'm not sure.
Lucas: You're not sure?
Iris: Well, I'll get the figures by tomorrow morning.
Lucas: How much did they decline after you left? How much will "Sophisticate" make in the first year? Money, Iris. That's the bottom line. Money and power! So do it again.
Lucas: Yeah. You're going to get one shot at this tomorrow, one shot.
Amanda: What's wrong?
Ada: She wonít talk to me.
Amanda: Mom? Mom, will you talk to me?
Ada: Take it easy, ok?
Amanda: Mom, we have to stick together. I canít handle this by myself. Mom, look, we have to be strong. We canít let Iris win.
Amanda: I love you. Everything is going to be ok.
Rachel: No, it isnít. Your father isnít here.
Amanda: We're just going to have to do the best that we can without him.
Rachel: He would have handled that board meeting tomorrow. He would have charmed them all. He always did. He ought to be here.
Amanda: Mom, what's the real reason for all of this?
Rachel: It's because of me.
Rachel: I never should have let him go to Maine.
Amanda: Mom --
Rachel: I knew he wasn't himself. If I'd been there with him, I could have helped him.
Rachel: If he had been sick, I could have gotten him to the hospital.
Amanda: Mom, please donít talk like that. No one could have known.
Rachel: I could have. If I had been with him, he never would have left.
Amanda: Mom, please donít do this.
Rachel: All I had --
Amanda: It wasn't your fault.
Rachel: All I had to do was tell him I was going with him.
Amanda: He wanted to be alone.
Rachel: He was so demoralized; he didnít know what he wanted.
Amanda: Daddy always knew what was best for him.
Rachel: This time he needed me, and I wasn't there.
Amanda: That isnít true. You were always there for him. There isnít a woman in this world that loved and supported her husband more. Part of that love was just respecting his need to be alone. I mean, come on, Mom, you really think Daddy would have wanted you following him around like a nursemaid?
Rachel: I never saw him again. He left me and he didnít come back.
Amanda: He's in our hearts, Mom. He's --
Rachel: That's not enough! I want him to come through that door! I want him to handle this board meeting for me! I want him to be back here so nothing will happen, and he's not -- not going to be! He's gone!
Amanda: I know. Look, Mom, we love you. And we are going to stick together through all this. We're going to be strong. We're going to make Daddy proud of us. We can do it.
Rachel: I want him here.
Amanda: I know we can. We can do it.
Ada: I hope Amandaís getting through to her.
Ada: Why does this damn meeting have to be tomorrow? Couldn't they give Rachel a break?
Sam: You know something, Ada? Sometimes I get the feeling that you and I are the only two that feel like that around here.
Evan: All right, where's Amanda?
Ada: With Rachel.
Sam: How'd it go with Vicky?
Evan: Iris and Lucas had been there ahead of me.
Evan: Sam, is that your presentation?
Evan: Well, I'd like to approve it before tomorrow.
Sam: You'd like to --
Evan: To approve it, yes.
Sam: Stick to the finances, pal. Artistic is my department.
Evan: Look, Sam, too much is riding --
Sam: Look, haven't you done enough for one day?
Ada: All of a sudden, I feel a need for a very long walk. I'll see you guys around.
Evan: Listen, Sam, everything is tense around here. I do not want any surprises at the board meeting tomorrow, and that includes your little presentation. Now, Amandaís told me a little bit about it, but I'd like to see it. I want to --
Sam: Amanda -- I really wish to hell you'd leave her alone.
Evan: Sam, with this company in this tenuous position, it's essential that I interface with Rachel and Amanda.
Sam: "Interface" -- is that what you call it? And it's all for the good of Cory Publishing, right?
Evan: Well, you think whatever you like.
Sam: I think -- I think that I'm going to try to deal with you as best I can until this board meeting is over, because that would be good for Rachel and Amanda.
Evan: I agree.
Sam: But I'll also tell you this -- as soon as the board meeting is over with, when Rachel feels better, when things have calmed down for everyone, I'm going to look you up and we're going to settle this.
Evan: Good, because I'll be waiting.
Matt: Please, Josie, if you're listening --
Lilly: Two minutes.
Matt: I just want to tell you that I've been searching all over the city, I've walked every block in this city, I've put ads in the newspaper, and I think you called once.
Olivia: Oh, oh, but I answered the phone. It's Olivia, and you have nothing to worry about. Matthew and I barely tolerate each other.
Matt: That's true. I canít stand her. She's trying to help.
Lilly: Look, I canít give you much more time, though.
Ann: Let him talk.
Matt: Ok, please! Josie, I love you. Riviera, please call.
Lilly: He really is sincere, Riviera. Every time --
Reuben: Josie, pick up the phone. Tell her, Tess.
Tess: Come on, girl. Have a heart, huh?
Man: Yeah, call the poor guy.
Reuben: Go for it, Josie. Do it.
Tess: Do it, Josie. Call him.
Man: Do it, Josie.
Reuben: Excuse me, excuse me. Can I have your attention, please? Excuse me, excuse me. Can you get up, please? Thank you very much. Excuse me. Now, I know you all been listening to "the Lilly Girard show," right? Well, this is Riviera in the flesh. It is, all right? So, now, do you think she should call the guy or not?
Reuben: Yes? Yeah, now, come on, then. Come on. Yeah, yeah, yeah, come on.
All: Call! Call! Call! Call! Call! Call! Call! Call! Call! Call! Call! Call! Call!
Matt: She's going to cut me --
Lilly: I'm sorry. Look, I think that we have to call it a day, because there has been no response and there are lots of callers waiting.
Ann: Hold it, hold it. I think we've got her.
Lilly: It's Riviera.
Olivia: You did it, Matt.
Lilly: Hello, Riviera? You're on the air. This is Lilly Girard.
Josie: Hi, Matt, it's me. Are you there?
Matt: Oh, Josie, please, donít hang up, ok? I've waited so long to talk to you.
Josie: I wonít hang up.
Matt: I canít tell you half of what I want to say to you, with all these people listening. Could you tell me how I could get in touch with you?
Josie: We could meet somewhere.
Matt: Great, great, ok. That's great, and I promise if we canít work these things out, then I'll leave you alone for good, ok?
Lilly: Sounds like a pretty good offer, Riviera.
Reuben: Go for it, Josie. Right, guys?
Man: Come on.
Matt: Ok. How about central park, the carousel, 4:00 P.M. Tomorrow, ok?
Reuben: All right, Matt.
Josie: I'll be there.
Reuben: All right! Yeah! It's about time.
Matt: You promise?
Josie: I promise.
Matt: See you then.
Lilly: Well, congratulations to both of you. Is this a love story, folks, or --
Matt: I'm going to see her tomorrow!
Josie: I'm going to see him tomorrow.
Reuben: All right.
Iris: A magazine not only of the 1990s, but of the 21st century.
Lucas: Conviction, Iris, conviction! Where is your conviction?
Iris: Oh, all right, that's it! You just get out of here and go on to bed!
Lucas: You sound like you're begging. Is that what you want to sound like, a beggar?
Iris: Mac Coryís daughter does not beg! And I donít want you or anyone else pushing me around. I can handle that meeting tomorrow without your help or anyone elseís. And you know why? Because I'm the only one who can run the company the way Daddy did. I'm the only one with his vision and his strength! Ok, ok, Rachel Cory is a fine woman, and my daddy loved her. But he knew -- he knew it was impossible for her to run the company! I know what Mac Cory saw as the future. I know that company, and I love it! And by God, I can lead it!
Lucas: That's what you tell them.
Ada: Well, how's it going in here?
Ada: Any word from Rachel yet?
Sam: Not yet.
Amanda: You're back.
Evan: Yeah. Where's Rachel?
Amanda: She's in her office.
Ada: How's she doing?
Amanda: Well, she's finally facing what she couldn't face before. She's letting all the grief that she's been keeping inside come out.
Ada: Oh, at last. She'll be better now.
Amanda: Yeah. I hate seeing her like this, but at least now I know she's going to be ok.
Evan: All right, what about tomorrow?
Amanda: I donít know, Evan. I donít know.
Vicky: Yes. I would like to order a car for 2:30 tomorrow afternoon, to take me to the offices of Cory Publishing. Oh, make it a stretch limousine. Yes. It is going to be a big day.
