Lucas: So I trust your trip was successful?

Iris: Quite, thank you.

Lucas: One of the people from my London office saw you in Mirabel.

Iris: The food is not as good as it used to be, but everybody still goes there.

Lucas: I prefer the Curzon club; it's a little stuffy, but it has that British gentility and charm and solidness.

Iris: Well, it's certainly very stuffy.

Lucas: So, your trip was worthwhile?

Iris: Oh, yes, very. I learned a great deal, both about starting a magazine and also about you.

Ada: Hilda, let's not unpack the suitcases, ok? Let's just send them all to the cleaners. Isnít it good to be home?

Rachel: Yeah.

Ada: I loved Maine; I love the down Easters; I love the pine trees and the lobsters, but isnít it good to be home?

Rachel: Mm-hmm.

Ada: I could at least sleep around the clock, how about you?

Ada: A little tired? We did some heavy-duty traveling there. We talked to everybody Mac talked to, we went every place Mac went; the man got around.

Iris: Yes, I asked around and I did some checking.

Lucas: Oh?

Iris: I've come to a decision. I have decided to hire you for the "Sophisticate" launch.

Lucas: Was there any other choice?

Iris: You certainly are very sure of yourself, aren't you?

Lucas: I'm good at what I do.

Iris: So I'm told.

Lucas: You made the right choice.

Iris: I hope so. You realize that you'll have to be available 24 hours a day?

Lucas: Around-the-clock service.

Iris: Any objection?

Lucas: I want your account.

Iris: You will have to move to Bay City; is that a problem?

Lucas: Not if you're willing to pay my price.

Iris: It is extremely high.

Lucas: You're buying the best; it does not come cheap.

Iris: That is true. Very well, we have a deal.

Lucas: You wonít regret it.

Iris: I hope not. Now what is your proposal?

Lucas: My proposal?

Iris: Yes. You're on the payroll now, Lucas. I found your initial concept quite intriguing. But now, I'd like some details.

Lucas: I think you've taken me a bit by surprise, Iris.

Iris: I am sorry if you do not have your storyboard or your props. If you cannot handle it, well...

Lucas: Do you have a paper and pencil?

Iris: Yes, they're over here in my desk.

Lucas: Ok, now this... will basically be it.

Iris: What is that?

Lucas: This is the "Sophisticate" cover. Each month, a fresh new face.

Iris: Where will you find these ordinary new faces?

Lucas: Everywhere. We will launch the most extensive search in magazine history. We will launch a TV campaign: "Sophisticate" looking for the superstar of the nineties. Give us a fresh new face; we will do the rest. The magazine of the nineties looking for the superstar of the nineties.

Iris: That should give us some attention.

Lucas: Are you kidding? Everybody wants to be a cover girl.

Iris: Sounds super. There's only one cloud on the horizon.

Lucas: What is that?

Iris: Rachel.

Rachel: Nothing specific.

Ada: It's just a feeling, right?

Rachel: Something is not right. Something is wrong about that whole period of time before Mac died.

Ada: What is it that you think is wrong?

Rachel: It is as though a piece of the puzzle is missing.

Ada: There is no missing piece because there is no puzzle.

Rachel: I just kept thinking that if I went up there, I could make it all make sense.

Ada: It will never make any sense.

Amanda: Hi! You're home!

Rachel: I missed you!

Sam: Hi.

Amanda: So good to see you!

Rachel: Hi, honey. Wow! What's all this?

Sam: Ada, how are you doing?

Ada: I'm good, Sam, hi. Where's Alli?

Sam: Alli is in the kitchen being spoiled.

Ada: Of course.

Amanda: We brought her over earlier.

Sam: Welcome home.

Rachel: I should be welcoming you. It was awfully gracious of you to move in with your family.

Amanda: We're excited about it, right, Sam?

Sam: Right.

[Sighs]

Ada: Well? What is this? Grandmas do not get hugs anymore around here?

Amanda: Of course they do! They get hugs and kisses!

Ada: You bet your boots.

Rachel: Anybody heard from Matthew?

Amanda: No, I have not. We haven't heard from him or anybody else as far as I know.

Ada: Well, maybe all the telephones in New York City are out of order.

Rachel: I tried to talk him out of going to New York. I mean, he is all by myself and he is just a kid.

Amanda: He's not a kid, Mom.

Ada: Well, he ain't crocodile Dundee, either.

Rachel: I know he is worried about Josie.

Ada: Well, sure, he is crazy about her.

Rachel: Still, I do not want him alone in New York City.

Ada: Oh, Matt can take care of himself. Besides, he'll be all right at Russ' place.

Rachel: Yes, well, I'm glad for that at least.

Sam: If you all will excuse me, I'm gonna go empty the car out.

Rachel: Oh, you donít need to do that. The help can do that.

Sam: No--no help. I will do it on my own, thanks.

Amanda: I will be out soon, ok, hon?

Evan: Oh, I'm sorry, I didnít expect anyone to be here.

Sam: What are you doing here, and how did you get a key?

Mitch: That was Cass.

Felicia: I know. What were you saying about Lucas?

Mitch: He was saying that you and Lucas had run into nothing but dead ends. I'm sorry.

Felicia: Well, I never really thought we would find her right off. I knew it would take some more time than this.

Mitch: Of course it is.

Felicia: I do--I do have a new plan.

Mitch: What?

Felicia: Well, my talk show--I thought I could do an hour on adoption services and, well, I could talk about my own personal experience.

Mitch: Now that sounds like a good idea.

Felicia: It was Lucas' idea.

Mitch: He has lots of ideas about ways to find her, and I am sure it's just a matter of time.

Mitch: Felicia, do you really believe in this guy?

Felicia: Honey, he is as desperate as I am to find our baby. You know, I have got to quit saying that about her. She's a grown woman, and I keep seeing her as this little baby.

Mitch: And you trust him?

Felicia: Yes, of course I do.

Mitch: Even though you do not know him?

Felicia: I did--I did know him very well.

Mitch: That was a long time ago. You have not known him since he left Gold Street.

Felicia: That was not his fault.

Mitch: Look, I'm not saying that it was.

Felicia: Abigail told him that I did not want to see him anymore, and she can be very persuasive. And, well, he just believed her.

Mitch: Look, I know that is what he says.

Felicia: You know, if she had not lied to both of us, I'm sure our lives would be very different now.

Mitch: Great, maybe you could be with him, not me.

Felicia: Oh, Mitch! That is not what I meant. It's not, not at all.

Evan: Rachel gave it to me.

Sam: Rachel gave you a key to her house?

Evan: Yes, before she went to Maine in case I had to come here for work--

Sam: Or whatever.

Rachel: Evan!

Evan: Rachel, you're back!

Rachel: Yeah, just. How are you?

Evan: Fine, how are you?

Rachel: Ok.

Evan: Ada, Amanda.

Ada: Hi, Evan.

Evan: Hi. So, why donít you tell me about your trip? You can have those back.

Rachel: Thank you. Oh, it was...fine.

Ada: Hark; do I hear the voice of a little angel calling to me?

Amanda: Now, grandma, Alli is all the way in the kitchen.

Ada: I could hear Alli if she was in Chicago.

Amanda: [Laughs]

Ada: I am coming my little one, coming.

Evan: So you're moving in now, huh?

Amanda: Right, Sam and I woke up this morning and decided today is the day.

Rachel: Oh, it was a lovely homecoming.

Amanda: I guess you came at just the right time.

Rachel: So, tell me, how is, um, things at the office? How did the meeting with Ross Gordon go?

Evan: Oh, it went great. You know, your daughter played him like a poker hand.

Rachel: Great!

Amanda: I just hope Iris doesn't get to him before the board meeting.

Evan: Well, she just might have a chance.

Rachel: What--what are you talking about?

Evan: Well, she arrived back in Bay City this morning.

Rachel: Just in time for the board meeting.

Evan: Not to fret, I've already taken measures to postpone the meeting, but we've got to have it before the stockholders meet.

Rachel: Yes, but that's in a few weeks, Evan.

Evan: But it'll give us time to plan a strategy.

Amanda: Not a lot of time. Iris is not exactly gonna sit around.

Evan: Well, she--if we give her an opportunity, she might turn the meeting into a 3-ring circus.

Rachel: Well, we're not gonna give her an opportunity like that. The future of this company is our credibility. The 3 of us are just gonna have to prove to the stockholders that Cory Publishing is still as powerful as it was when Daddy was alive.

Evan: Exactly. So what I've done is I've made a few notes, and if you're not too tired, I think that we should go--

Rachel: Oh, no. I'm not too tired, come on.

Reuben: What the hell is going on here, huh?

Man: Who is this, your bodyguard?

Reuben: Is this guy giving you trouble, huh?

Josie: Reuben, Reuben, it is ok.

Reuben: No, it's not ok, man.

Man: Hey, I never even touched her, all right?

Reuben: And you never will, punk.

Tess: Hey, what's the problem down here?

Reuben: The problem is this guy donít know when to get lost.

Man: Why donít you just cool out? I am leaving, ok?

Reuben: Go ahead, keep walking. I tell you, man, these yuppies. They think they own the world or something.

Tess: Sorry you had to deal with that.

Josie: I used to be able to handle guys like that.

Tess: Everybody has an off day now and then.

Josie: No, I could just get rid of them. Now, all a guy has to do is look at me and I fall apart.

Reuben: You know something, Josie? You got a problem then. Because what guy is not gonna look at you?

[Sighs] Josie, what is going on? I know it's got something to do with Matt. Why wonít you tell me what happened?

Lucas: Rachel Cory. I'm afraid I do not know much about her.

Iris: You're lucky.

Lucas: Of course, what's common knowledge?

Iris: Her private life is a different kettle of fish. She was born poor, a small-town girl who made good by marrying a rich and powerful man.

Lucas: Your father?

Iris: Yes, my father.

Lucas: The American dream.

Iris: More like a nightmare. And now she and Amanda, my beloved half-sister, own 2/3 of my father's stock in the company.

Lucas: They're running it?

Iris: Into the ground. Rachel is a sculptor, for goodness sake. Amandaís only a child. I am the only one with any real leadership.

Lucas: I imagine they think otherwise.

Iris: They would do anything to keep me out of the company.

Lucas: Should not be a problem. They control 2/3.

Iris: They control 2/3 of Daddy's stock, not 2/3 of the company. And I have no intention of letting them ruin what my father took his whole life to build. That is why "Sophisticate" is so important to me.

Lucas: I donít follow.

Iris: It is very simple. When "Sophisticate" becomes a hot property, I'll offer it to Cory.

Lucas: Give it to them?

Iris: Yes, and when it becomes a valuable asset, that will strengthen my position on the board of directors.

Lucas: You would give them your magazine?

Iris: That is only the first step.

Lucas: I donít follow.

Iris: Well, then I'll be made C.E.O., And Amanda and Rachel can go back to their bridge clubs and their charity committees.

Lucas: Well, it sounds simple, maybe a little too simple.

Iris: Look, I am not a fool. I know it will be a struggle.

Lucas: This Rachel, she sounds like a fighter.

Iris: Rachel loves power. And even though she is totally inadequate in the boardroom, she does have a certain charm.

Lucas: And people like her.

Iris: Oh, in Bay City they're convinced that she is a saint. What a joke. I donít know why I'm running on like this now. Where are those sketches?

[Grunts]

[Knocking]

Sam: Well, what is the problem?

Evan: No problem, I was just leaving. I thought I'd stop by and see how everything is going.

Sam: Everything is fine; it's just fine.

Evan: I hope Amanda didnít get home too late last night for you.

Sam: Anything for Cory Publishing.

Evan: You got it.

Sam: Well, Evan, I will be seeing you. That's one thing I am sure of. Yes?

Evan: Well, it's just something small; I was just curious when you're gonna tell Amanda the truth about your art show.

Sam: I donít know what you're talking about.

Evan: Oh, yes you do. I know your art show didnít go that well.

Sam: Really? You know that? Now, I canít imagine who told you that.

Evan: Donít go blame Caroline. She had no idea you were going to keep it a secret.

Sam: What did she expect me to do, announce it on the 6:00 news?

Evan: No, not all.

Sam: All right, Evan, listen and listen good, ok? I am doing this for Amanda. I do not want her worrying, got it?

Evan: Well, what is she gonna do when she finds out that you've been misleading her?

Sam: You keep your mouth shut about it.

Evan: The truth will set you free, Sam; nobody knows that better than I do.

Sam: Look, Evan, you get this straight ok? You stay away from us; you stay away from Amanda, and you damn well better stay away from me, got it?

Rachel: Excuse me. Evan?

Evan: Yeah, I was just leaving.

Sam: Not if it's a lecture on how to get along with Evan.

Rachel: It's not about Evan; it's about me. I just want to tell you how grateful I am that you've decided to move the family back here.

Sam: It's ok, forget it.

Rachel: I know it doesn't feel comfortable.

Sam: I'll get used to it.

Rachel: But it means a lot to me to have Amanda and Alli here right now.

Sam: Listen... after everything you've done for me for the last couple of years, I figured it was the least I could do.

Rachel: Done for you or to you?

Sam: Yeah, there has been a little bit of that.

Rachel: [Chuckles]

Sam: But that is all history now. Come on, we're family.

Rachel: Well, I'm glad you feel that way. So, what is this gonna be, your next masterpiece?

Sam: Yeah, call the Louvre.

Rachel: Objective or nonobjective?

Sam: I donít know. I canít seem to get inspired.

Rachel: A block?

Sam: Yeah.

Rachel: Sorry. But you know, you do get over those and when you do, it is a terrific feeling.

Sam: Yeah, it's something all right.

Amanda: There you are. I hate to interrupt the two artists deep in conversation, but somebody is here for you, Mom.

Rachel: Who?

Amanda: I donít know, Hilda sent me to find you.

Rachel: Excuse me.

Sam: Yeah.

Amanda: So what were you and Mom talking about?

Sam: Talking about my new masterpiece.

Amanda: Oh, what's it gonna be?

Sam: I donít want to talk about it, I'm superstitious.

Amanda: What, after New York? Come on, this is your sure thing.

Sam: Yeah, well, you better let me get back to work then, ok?

Amanda: Ok.

Olivia: Well? What happened?

Matt: What have we got to drink in this place? I am dying of thirst!

Olivia: Come on, Matthew, what did you find out?

Matt: No more cold soda?

Olivia: Here. Here is a club soda. Now will you to please tell me about Ivan Narvo?

Matt: [Exhales loudly] He walks fast, very fast. In fact, it's more like jog.

Olivia: Well, go on--go on!

Matt: Ok, ok, I followed him to this delicatessen. He ordered a pastrami on rye with extra pickles. He wolfed down half of it before he even got out of the door, wrapped up the other half and then headed over to the jewelry store, munching on the pickles in route, to pick up some gold cufflinks that he had engraved. Did you notice that New Yorkers donít stop and wait for the walk sign to cross the street? They just go--whatever. Then he hopscotchís it 10 long blocks; that guy is in marathon shape, believe me. And then it is over to the cleaners while munching on the other half of the sandwich, to pick up some shirts--mentioning that he hoped they had not starched them because last time they starched them and he got a rash.

[Exhales]

Olivia: That is so boring!

Matt: What did you expect, "Indiana Jones and the last crusade"?

Olivia: Well, I have got to figure out a way to approach him. I need to find an angle, Matthew.

Matt: Yeah, well, why donít you wear cologne eau de pastrami?

Olivia: This is serious.

Matt: Well then, why donít you work on the part instead? Work on Juliet, not Narvo.

Olivia: I have been working! I've been practicing my audition piece day and night.

Matt: No, no, no. I was not referring to your dancing.

Olivia: Well, what else is there?

Matt: The part. Work on the part.

Olivia: Well, I read the play in high school.

Matt: Oh yeah? Tell me about it.

Olivia: Well, Juliet was in love with Romeo.

Matt: [Gasps] Oh! You picked that up from one reading? I had to read it 5 times at least.

Olivia: And Romeo was in love with her--madly in love, and they, uh--

Matt: You want me to give you a little hint?

Olivia: No! Yeah, ok.

Matt: "Oh, happy dagger, this is thy sheath. There rest and let me die."

Olivia: She dies.

Matt: Good. Now, in between loving Romeo and dying, do you know what happens?

Olivia: Well, yes. They, um, it is complicated.

Matt: Right, so why donít you read the play and try to figure it out?

[Matt whistles]

Olivia: Where did this come from?

Matt: Oh, I forgot to tell you I also followed Narvo to the bookstore where he picked up a book on low cholesterol cooking. I guess he felt bad about the pastrami, huh?

Matt: Exit stage left.

Reuben: Baby baby so, anything look promising?

Josie: Not really.

Reuben: What?

Josie: Reuben, take those off.

Reuben: Sorry, sorry, sorry.

Josie: I'm just circling anything I can find.

Reuben: At least one of us is employed, right?

Josie: Yes and you're one lucky dude.

Reuben: [Chuckles] Donít I know it! What's the chances of me landing a job while I'm avoiding my parole?

Josie: Shh!

Reuben: I mean, it is, like, a first time, isnít it?

Josie: Yeah, but you're just lucky because Tess thinks you're cute.

Reuben: She thinks that? Are you serious--she said that?

Josie: Ask her.

Reuben: Oh yeah, right, that is gonna go over real good. "Tess, honey, I know you think I'm adorable."

Josie: You donít have to quite put it that way.

Reuben: Well, I ain't got to put it in no way, are you crazy? I'm just gonna count my paycheck and my blessings and call it a day.

Josie: I'm really happy for you, Reuben.

Reuben: I really wish I could be happy for you.

Josie: I'm ok.

Reuben: Yeah, right.

Reuben: Josie, I know that you're hurting.

Reuben: You ran away to New York because you and Matt, you know, you did what you did. And now, somehow, in your head, you think you're like your mother, right? Josie, your mother is a wonderful person and so are you. There is nothing wrong with loving somebody. You didnít do nothing wrong!

Josie: How can you just act like it's no big deal?

Reuben: Josie! It is a big deal. I mean, if you love each other, it should be ok. You should be with him all the time, Josie.

Josie: No, no.

Reuben: Josie, look at me in my eye and you tell me how you feel.

Josie: I feel cheap. All I feel is cheap.

Vivien: Mr. Mitch Blake.

Iris: So good of you to stop by, Mitch.

Mitch: So what's all this about?

Iris: It's about "Sophisticate."

Mitch: Your magazine?

Iris: Yes, I'll be opening it with a big splashy launch.

Mitch: What does that have to do with me?

Iris: Well, I'm about to assemble staff. I want the best and you are.

Mitch: For your staff?

Iris: Yes. I am prepared to make you a lucrative offer.

Mitch: You can save it, Iris. The answer's no.

Iris: I donít see why.

Mitch: Are you kidding?

Iris: Well, you donít have an exclusive contract with "Brava."

Mitch: No, I do not have any contract.

Iris: Well, I mean, I'll double what they're paying you.

Mitch: Iris, you could triple it, but the answer would still be no.

Iris: Mitch, what is the problem?

Mitch: You are.

Iris: Look, ever since I returned to Bay City I have been blamed for everything; I'm really very tired of it.

Mitch: Listen, Iris, I am very sorry--

Iris: Mitch, I would have expected you to understand with your past history.

[Clapping sounds]

Vivien: Mrs. Wheeler! There's a minor crisis in the kitchen. Actually, it's a minor-major crisis, but it could become a major-minor crisis, come on!

Iris: Excuse me.

Mitch: Lucas.

Iris: That woman!

[Chuckles] It was a simple pilot light.

Mitch: Lucas is going to be working with you?

Iris: Yes, why?

Mitch: I know his work.

Iris: Well, he's the best.

Mitch: Actually, I have met him.

Iris: You have? Where?

Mitch: He has quite a reputation internationally.

Iris: Well, that is why I hired him.

Mitch: It might be an interesting experience working with him.

Iris: Absolutely.

Mitch: Of course, I donít know how he would feel about me.

Iris: I'm in charge of hiring and firing.

Mitch: Well, in that case, maybe we can work something out.

Felicia: Well, kid, you certainly look good.

Ada: Thank you. I'm glad to see you.

Felicia: Good. Come in. Come in, and tell me all about the lobsters.

Ada: I brought back about a dozen recipes for the restaurant.

Felicia: How was Maine really? I mean, how is--how is Rachel feeling?

Ada: Have you ever been there? The ocean is spectacular.

Felicia: In other words, it didnít help her a bit.

Ada: She wonít accept it. She wonít let go of him.

Felicia: Well, you know, I'm having a little trouble with that myself.

Ada: So am I. But she keeps going over and over every detail of the week before he died. It is like she wants to find something that is out of place, something that does not fit.

Felicia: What do you mean doesn't fit?

Ada: Well, it is like she wants to find out that there was a plot, and there was not. It was unexpected; it was so sudden that it all crashed in on her.

Felicia: You know, when Zane died, I had a hard time accepting that. I remember I walked around like Mary sunshine, and I told everybody that Zane would want me to go on.

Ada: And then there are the days where you never get out of your bathrobe.

Felicia: I think it is then that you know that it is real.

Ada: Well, Rachel isnít anywhere near that point yet. Instead of mourning, she went all over Maine like Sherlock Holmes.

Felicia: Everybody has to do it in their own way.

Ada: Oh, Felicia, it's getting so extreme; I'm getting worried about her.

Felicia: Oh, come on, it hasn't been that long. Donít worry, at least not yet.

Rachel: Please, do not touch that. This is the first time

Olivia: ...Two, 3, and up. Out, two, 3--

Matt: What happened?

Olivia: One, two, 3, and up.

Matt: Olivia?

Olivia: Shh! Canít you see I'm working?

Matt: I thought you were reading "Romeo and Juliet."

Olivia: I am trying to concentrate.

Matt: You're supposed to be concentrating on the play.

Olivia: Too dull.

Matt: What?!

Olivia: All that iambic pentameter, it's boring.

Matt: Boring?

Olivia: Is my back straight?

Matt: You know what I think you are?

Olivia: I can never tell without a mirror.

Matt: A dilettante.

Olivia: It feels right but--

Matt: No, no, no. You pretend to be a cultured person, someone of taste and refinement.

Olivia: What are you rambling on about?

Matt: But you find Shakespeare dull. The most extraordinary writer in history, in any language, you find boring.

Olivia: Oh, my, the beach boy has done the classics.

Sam: Hi.

Amanda: Still working?

Sam: Yeah, I've only been working for a couple of hours.

Amanda: It seems like forever.

Sam: Donít you have to get back to the office?

Amanda: I took the day off for the move.

Sam: Oh, good.

Amanda: [Sighs] Here, let me help.

Sam: Help me mix paints?

Amanda: Sure, why not?

Sam: Well, 'cause I usually do this on my own.

Amanda: Ok, I just thought maybe it would go a little faster if I helped you.

Sam: Well, I am not in a hurry, Amanda, come on.

Amanda: I am.

Sam: Why?

Amanda: I'd like to christen our move.

Sam: Christen the move?

Amanda: Upstairs, in the bedroom?

Sam: Oh.

Amanda: Oh.

Sam: Christen the move, huh?

Amanda: Took you long enough.

Sam: Yeah, a little too long.

Amanda: [Giggling] We could have been upstairs already.

Sam: Well--[Clears throat]-- In the interest of time, why donít we stay down here?

Amanda: Oh, Sam--

Sam: Shh.

Lucas: Oh, I'm sorry, my name is Lucas.

Rachel: Just Lucas?

Lucas: Yes.

Rachel: I know that name.

Lucas: I'm flattered you heard of me.

Rachel: What are you doing here?

Lucas: I heard about your husband, and I came to express my condolences.

Rachel: Well, that was very nice, but I'm afraid I still donít understand.

Lucas: Oh?

Rachel: Why would you come all the way to our home when you donít know our family?

Lucas: I'm afraid that is not true, Mrs. Cory; I knew your husband. I knew him very well.
