Mitch: You were pregnant?
Felicia: I -- I think we should go back inside, don't you?
Mitch: No, no, I don't think we should go back inside --
Felicia: Mitch --
Mitch: No, not after you've just told me something like this. What is it?
Felicia: I have never talked about this before. If I tell you --
Mitch: If you tell me, what? What are you afraid of?
Felicia: That you'll never feel quite the same way about me again.
Vicky: Say, you still haven't answered my question.
Jamie: What question?
Vicky: Are you going to take me to the snowflake ball?
Vicky: You -- great.
Jamie: But on one condition.
Vicky: All right. What?
Jamie: That we don't dance every dance --
Jamie: And we get you home early.
Vicky: Oh, well, I think I could handle that because I don't think I'm really in shape to be the belle of the ball.
Jamie: I'm worried about these dizzy spells, though.
Jamie: Have you been taking your vitamins? I know, I sound like a doctor.
Vicky: No. Actually, I was thinking you sound more like a father.
Rachel: Who told you?
Sam: Who the hell care -- cares who told me? Is that true?
Rachel: Sam, it's not what you think.
Sam: Oh, man. You know, people -- they always say "it's not what you think" when they're really going to let you have it.
Rachel: Let's go somewhere and talk.
Sam: Oh. It is true, isn't it? I've got this show because you bankrolled the whole thing. Lady, you just paid for the biggest moment of my life!
Felicia: I've never told anybody this. Not Zane. He didn't know. Or Cass. Not even Wally.
Mitch: Tell me.
Felicia: Oh, God, I mean, I would have to start all the way back to the beginning and --
Mitch: I'm not going anywhere.
Felicia: Ok. Fine, you want to know? I'll tell you. My mother married Noah because she needed a man in her life. She was very dependent. I mean, that's ok. I understood that. I tried very hard to get along with him because I -- I knew how much it meant to her. My brother and I were -- well, I guess you would call us liabilities that she brought to the marriage.
Mitch: According to Noah.
Felicia: When Mama was alive, everything was -- was ok. But then when my Mama died -- well, the love and the care and, you know, the -- the tenderness went out of our lives.
Mitch: So your brother takes off?
Felicia: Right. The navy, right. And then there was just me and Noah and his sister Abigail. Boy. I don't know -- I don't know what it was. I -- there was just something in me that made them both so angry all the time.
Mitch: Why you?
Felicia: I don't know. I -- I really tried very hard. I did, I really did. I mean, I -- I pulled myself back. I -- I tried to be polite and well-mannered and not to be a burden on anybody. I listened to all his lectures, and there were many. I went to prayer meetings, all of them. I even begged God to try to make me not a bad person.
Mitch: What had you done that was so bad?
Felicia: I met a boy. It was after a prayer meeting, if you can believe that. It was a -- a warm autumn night. I was almost 17. He was very different than me. He was quiet, calm and he walked me home. He let me talk, and I went on and on. On and on. And he just listened.
Felicia: By the time we got to Noah’s front porch -- we actually had fallen in love.
Felicia: Oh, love is like a warm blanket when you're so cold for so long.
Mitch: Did Noah find out?
Felicia: No. No, not until I told him. I went to him and said I wanted to be married. Hmm. Married. I'd only known him for about six weeks.
Oh, we wanted each other so much. And we were so sure and I was so stupid and innocent. I really thought he would give me his blessing.
Mitch: He refused?
Felicia: Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah, he refused, all right.
Felicia: He had his reasons.
Mitch: What reasons?
Felicia: You know what? I -- oh. I really can't talk about this anymore, ok, please?
Mitch: Were you pregnant --
Mitch: When you went and asked --
Felicia: No, of course not. I -- we hadn't even made love. I would never have slept with a man before I married him. Not then.
Mitch: So what did you do when Noah said no?
Felicia: We wanted each other so much. We -- we did the only thing that -- that we could do. We got married.
Man: Telegram for Caroline Stafford.
Cass: Oh, I'll take that.
Man: You don't look like Caroline Stafford.
Cass: That's a relief. I'm her lawyer, which is the next best thing.
Man: It's marked "urgent."
Cass: Yes, I know. It's about a business deal that we're working on. I'll make sure that she gets it. Thank you. Well, now we can find out if that gallery deal is going through. Oh, no.
Rachel: It's true, Sam. I did finance the gallery.
Sam: Then all of this is just a put-up job, right?
Rachel: No, Sam. Caroline believes in you. That had nothing to do with money.
Sam: I really can't believe this.
Rachel: Sam, I didn't tell you because I was afraid you would take it like this.
Sam: Oh, how the hell else am I supposed to take it? You bought Caroline a gallery so you could give me a show?
Rachel: No, that's not the way it went! Caroline came to me about you, I thought.
Sam: You thought! Why is it always "you thought" and "you wanted" and "you decided"? How come it's never me?
Rachel: Would you rather I hadn't done this? Would you rather Caroline didn't have this gallery? Would you rather have gone on working from 9:00 to 5:00 at a graphic artist's job instead of doing the work you love?
Rachel: Oh, Sam. I'm sorry, then. I made a mistake.
Sam: You sure did, lady.
Rachel: I -- I heard Lauren Stein calling in his review. I think it's going to be a rave. I think the other critics are going to go the same way.
Sam: Why are you so sure -- did you buy them off, too?
Rachel: You know I didn’t.
Sam: No, I don't! This is great. I'm a success, huh? My paintings are going to bring in lots of money. I can give up the starving-artist routine and live just like you do, is that it?
Rachel: You can live any way you want, Sam. The success of this show has nothing to do with money; it has to do with talent. Don't you see that?
Sam: If I'm so damn talented, why didn't you just leave it alone? Why did you have to grease the slides?
Rachel: You tell me. You seem to have all the answers.
Sam: Yeah. It's the same old story, isn't it? I married your daughter and you didn't care for the way I was treating her, so you decided to turn me into Jasper Johns overnight.
Amanda: No, Sam, that isn't true! She didn't do anything like that.
Sam: You didn't know, did you? Not you, too? Oh, come on, Amanda, you got to tell me that you didn't know about this all along.
Amanda: Look, Sam, this isn't all part of some big plan.
Sam: Oh, man!
Amanda: Mom did this because she loves you. She believes in you. I knew you would never agree to do this show --
Sam: Don't you Cory’s leave anything to chance? Do you have to buy everything? Yeah, I can't believe this is happening.
Amanda: It is happening, all of it. Look around you -- these are your paintings, Sam. This is what you created. What am I supposed to do -- let you slave away at "Brava"?
Sam: You could've been honest! I might not have been much of a husband, but at least I was honest.
Amanda: You're a great husband. I really didn't think this would matter so much.
Sam: Not matter --
Amanda: Caroline loves your work. The critics are going to love your work. Who cares what all the --
Sam: I care. Me! Just me, ok?
Amanda: Sam! Sam!
Sam: How can I ever trust you again?
Amanda: Sam --
Sam: You know, this happens every time. Remember when we first met? Do you remember Mandy? Do you remember my first painting? You Cory’s -- you're masters at making me feel --
Amanda: Where are you going?
Sam: I got to get out of here. Caroline, you take those pictures down, and you send them to me tomorrow because this partnership is over!
Cass: Caroline --
Caroline: I can't!
Cass: Caroline, it's important.
Caroline: It's not important! Sam's important, and I can bail this situation out.
Evan: Is there anything I can do?
Amanda: I don't know.
Evan: Listen, why don't you -- why don't you let me drive you home. Sam's going to come home eventually.
Amanda: Yeah, I want to get out of here.
Evan: All right, all right. Why don't you -- why don't you just wait right here and I'll get your coat.
Rachel: Honey, is there anything I can do?
Amanda: Haven't you done enough?
Ada: Wait, honey, wait.
Rachel: She can't leave like this.
Ada: Yes, she can, and so can you.
Ada: I'm taking you home. Let's go.
Iris: My little darling. Oh.
Felicia: No, it -- it wasn't a real marriage.
Mitch: I don't understand.
Felicia: We went to Noah’s church. We stood at the altar and we held hands and we promised that we would be together forever. But there wasn't anybody else there, just the two of us.
Mitch: Poor kid.
Felicia: No. No, Mitch. I was -- I was happy. I knew I'd never be alone again, and I had somebody to love me. So it didn't matter what Noah or Abigail did. I mean, when I would catch them staring at me, I would quickly try and hide how I was really feeling, the joy that I felt inside me.
Mitch: You're still having to live with it.
Felicia: Oh, yeah. I mean, we couldn't tell anybody anything. I used to sneak off so I could see him. We were saving money. We were going to run away. And then I found out I was pregnant.
Woman: I never expected a scene like that.
Second woman: Ugh. These artist types -- you never know what to expect.
Felicia: Something's happened in there. We should go.
Mitch: No, no, no. Whatever's happening in there is not as important as what's happening out here.
Felicia: It's just -- this is just still so painful for me to talk about.
Mitch: Being pregnant made things worse.
Felicia: "Worse." Yeah, I guess you could say that. He called me a tramp and a slut. He threw him out of the house and he locked me in. I'd always been a prisoner in some ways. This time -- this time it was for real. And -- I don't want to talk about it anymore, ok? I want to go home. Will you take me home?
Vicky: Where did Sam go?
Amanda: I don't know. I don't think he's ever going to forgive me.
Jamie: Oh, honey. Mom backed this place, huh?
Amanda: Yes, but that isn't why Sam got this show. Last night was supposed to be so perfect.
Vicky: Is Sam all alone now?
Amanda: No, I think Caroline Stafford went after him.
Vicky: Oh, no.
Amanda: If I only knew where he was --
Vicky: No, now listen to me, Amanda, ok? I've done a few things like this myself, so I know how you feel. And I also know Sam, and I know that he is going to figure out that you did this all because you love him. And he's going to understand.
Amanda: You really think so?
Vicky: Oh, of course, of course I do. Ok?
Amanda: Look, Evan said that he was going to drive me home. Can you tell him that I'll -- I'll meet him out by his car, ok?
Jamie: I'll drive you home.
Amanda: No, no, you stay here with Vicky. I want at least one thing to turn out tonight, ok?
Jamie: I'll call you tomorrow, ok?
Vicky: Yeah, me, too.
Amanda: All right. Thanks.
Iris: Amanda, remember what I said.
Amanda: I will.
Vicky: Well, I don't really feel like hanging around here anymore.
Jamie: Oh, you got that right. Besides, I -- I need to talk to Matthew.
Vicky: Hey! How about we all order a pizza or something?
Jamie: Oh, well, I was going to drop you off first.
Jamie: No, that's ok. Listen, we can get something to eat if you want to.
Vicky: No, forget it.
Jamie: What's the matter?
Vicky: You don't want to take me to your apartment. You don't want Matthew to see me with you.
Jamie: That's not it.
Vicky: Then what is it?
Jamie: Come on.
Evan: Where's Amanda?
Iris: She's waiting for you in the car. She's -- she's pretty upset.
Evan: Well, that was some scene.
Iris: Yes, well, don't lose the opportunity.
Evan: I won’t. Well, it looks like this art opening was pretty much a disaster.
Iris: Hmm. Certainly was. For everyone but us.
Sam: I'll have a beer and a shot. The lady is leaving.
Caroline: Make it two beers, thanks.
Sam: Caroline, the show is over, ok?
Caroline: No, it isn’t.
Sam: What, Rachel pays overtime, too?
Caroline: Listen, you little snot. I'm more concerned with my reputation than any fragile artist's ego.
Sam: Tell that to your next client because this arrangement is over.
Caroline: Sorry, darling, but you've got a contract. And you're going places, and I'm going with you. It's true.
Sam: I'm getting out of here.
Caroline: No, you're not, not until you believe that I'm in your corner for real.
Singer: Ah ooh, ooh, ooh
Ada: The baby is sleeping like a baby.
Rachel: I wonder when Sam and Amanda will allow her to come here again.
Ada: Oh, honey.
Vivien: I heard the car, Mrs. Cory. I thought you'd enjoy an aperitif before your guests arrive.
Rachel: There won't be any guests, Vivien.
Rachel: If any guests arrive, tell them the party has been canceled, and please take down that banner.
Vivien: Yes, ma'am.
Rachel: Thank you.
Vivien: I guess the show was a bomb, huh?
Ada: Not exactly.
Vivien: Stuff happens.
Mitch: What happened to the baby?
Felicia: I -- I woke up one night and I was in pain and I -- I knew it had to be labor. Even though I hadn't ever gone to a doctor, I knew that it had to be much too early.
Mitch: Why hadn't you gone to a doctor?
Felicia: It would've been too embarrassing for Noah.
Felicia: Oh, yeah. I mean, a doctor might have told me something was wrong or that I was too young or something, I don't know.
Mitch: I'm sorry. Go on, go on.
Felicia: When the pain started, I thought this is how it happens. This is -- this is how -- this is how I'm supposed to be punished. I have to pay for my sins, I have to, and I have to do it with my own baby's life.
Mitch: No, no, no.
Felicia: When I woke up Noah and Abigail, everything -- everything was sort of a blur then and the pain. It was just so unbelievable, the pain, and I was taken to a hospital and -- and there somebody -- somebody put a mask over my face and I -- when I woke up, I was in this room and -- it was a hospital room and -- and Abigail was there, and a doctor, and they were standing sort of away from the bed, like they were almost afraid to come too close to me, and I said, "what about my baby?" And the doctor's eyes, he -- he sort of looked away, and I started to scream. "My baby! What have you done to my baby? Tell me what you've done with the baby!" And Abigail came over to the bed and she stood very close to me and she -- she leaned down and she said, "You have to be strong. You'll have to really hold on to your faith because you've been such a bad girl."
Felicia: "God has taken your baby to live with him."
Felicia: It was -- it was a little girl.
Mitch: Let me tell you something.
Mitch: And I know you know it's true, but I'm going to say it anyway. What Abigail and Noah said is a bunch of garbage. Nothing that you ever did had anything to do with the baby dying.
Felicia: I just -- I just want to know why. Because she could've lived. I -- I can handle it. I can. Oh -- I just -- I just want to know why.
Felicia: Thank you.
Mitch: I wish I had some answers for you.
Felicia: You couldn’t. Nobody could.
Mitch: So how do you feel?
Felicia: Like I just swam the channel.
Mitch: I'll bet.
Felicia: I should've told you this before. Do you know that I've been walking around with my past sort of haunting me and I -- I was feeling -- I was feeling alone?
Mitch: I don't want you feeling that way anymore.
Felicia: Do you remember that -- that warm-blanket feeling I was telling you about before? I have that with you. I have everything I ever wanted. And I was really letting those old memories come between us. I'm sorry.
Mitch: I'm glad you told me -- I mean, who you are. Think I have a better idea.
Felicia: Hmm. I'm not so sure I like that or not.
Mitch: Yeah, well, no, I just -- I mean, I understand why you've always had a difficult time with the idea of kids.
Felicia: I just don't think I have the right.
Mitch: You have the right to anything that you want.
Felicia: You know, when you say that, I almost believe it could be true.
Felicia: Thank God.
Mitch: For what?
Felicia: For you. Thank God for you.
Jamie: Now, if you were wondering why I didn't want to bring you over here --
Jamie: This is why.
Vicky: It's a pigsty.
Jamie: Tell me about it. I'd like to blame Matthew for it, but I've just been so busy.
Vicky: Yeah, well, nobody is this busy.
Jamie: Listen, I'll take care of it tomorrow, you know?
Vicky: Well, why don't you just set a match to it and -- and then you could collect the insurance, huh?
Jamie: That's an interesting approach, yes. Listen, are you hungry or thirsty? Can I get you some --?
Vicky: No, no, no, why don't you --
Jamie: Some water --
Vicky: Why don't you sit down? I cleared you a place here.
Jamie: I forgot we had a couch here.
[Jamie and Vicky laugh]
Vicky: So where's Matthew?
Jamie: I don't know. He's -- usually, he leaves a note somewhere.
Vicky: Ah. So we're all alone.
Jamie: Yeah, I guess we are. Why, here it is. "Jamie went to the library, studying for finals. Be home late."
Vicky: Well, that's Matthew.
Jamie: Who else would leave a note in a copy of "Ethan Frome"?
[Christmas music plays]
Vicky: Christmas music?
Jamie: Well, I thought it might make things more homey, but I guess it doesn't work.
Vicky: Now I know why you came to my place when you were drunk. I couldn't handle this unless I was sober, either.
Jamie: It was more than that.
Vicky: You know, Jamie, something happened that night and I'm sure you don't remember because you weren't feeling much.
Singer: The bells
Jamie: What happened?
Singer: Are sweetly ringing
Vicky: Well, you fell asleep in my arms and I was covering you and -- and then --
Jamie: And then I started snoring.
Vicky: No. You called out Lisa’s name.
Evan: Watch out, it's hot.
Amanda: Thanks. You don't have to do any more than --
Evan: Hey, I can help.
Evan: Well, I set this art gallery deal up for your mother and I brought her and Caroline together.
Amanda: Yeah, I know.
Evan: Well, I knew Caroline needed an investor and I knew your mother was interested in art. And since I know the terms of the deal, maybe I could just explain them to Sam and he would understand.
Amanda: Could you do that?
Evan: Well, why don't I just hang around for a while, just wait for Sam to come home?
Amanda: You know, I didn't really want to be here by myself anyway. I just had to get out of that gallery. All those people staring at me.
Evan: So where's your baby?
Amanda: At Mom's. Sam and I thought that we would be out till the early hours of the morning celebrating. Oh, this place is so empty without him. I'm so empty. Oh, I should've told him. If I can just talk to him now here, without all those people around -- he's just got to come home.
Evan: Amanda, I -- I think maybe you should face the fact that that may not happen, not tonight.
Caroline: So, I guess it boils down to whether you trust me or not.
Sam: You're too damn pushy to be devious.
Cass: Good, there you are.
Caroline: Oh, Cass.
Cass: Hi. I've been looking for you in every bar on this street.
Sam: Hi, Cass.
Caroline: Would you please tell this idiot about the deal we're doing and about the galleries we're opening in Los Angeles and New York?
Cass: I need to talk to you.
Sam: So you knew about this, too, huh?
Caroline: What difference does it make?
Cass: Yes, I knew.
Sam: Why didn't you tell me?
Cass: Well, mainly because Rachel was my client on this and she asked me not to.
Sam: Right! Yeah.
Cass: Right. And also, because I -- I know you're talented, and this is a great opportunity for you. And I also know that you're a hothead and you'll walk away from a good deal just because your ego gets wounded. I mean, tell me, Sam, how horrible is it really that somebody as rich and talented as Rachel Cory is interested in your career?
Sam: Do you want to know what's so horrible about it? Let me tell you -- the fact that everybody in Bay City knows that your whole life is mapped out for you, and I had no idea. I'd like at the very least to be consulted.
Caroline: Sam! You didn't have to be so bloody hard on him.
Cass: He's not my main concern.
Caroline: He's mine! Would you please let --?
Caroline: I have to follow him.
Cass: We have to talk.
Caroline: All the reviews will be in. It's just one phone --
Cass: Please, let it wait?
Caroline: Oh, I could change Sam’s life and mine. Just one phone call? Please? And then whatever it is you have to tell me, you can tell me!
Jamie: I called out Lisa’s name, huh?
Jamie: Well, I was -- you know, I had just seen her that night.
Vicky: Get real, Jamie!
Jamie: I'm sorry you had to hear that.
Vicky: I guess you couldn't help it, huh?
Jamie: Listen, you've got to understand something. I made a decision -- I'm going to plan a life with you. Now, I said goodbye to Lisa and I meant it.
Vicky: So I guess time is our only hope, huh?
Jamie: And the baby. I was talking to Jake about that.
Vicky: What? What were you talking to him for?
Jamie: I ran into him at Mary’s place.
Vicky: If you want to talk to anybody about our baby, you come to me, ok?
Jamie: I'll talk to anybody I want to about our baby, but what I meant was -- they were saying how lucky you and I are.
Vicky: Because Jake and Marley can't have a baby.
Jamie: Right. And why did you get so upset?
Vicky: I didn’t. I -- I just didn't understand, that's all.
Jamie: You loved Jake once, but now you're friends. So you can understand what I'm going through with Lisa.
Vicky: I don't want to talk about Jake and Lisa.
Jamie: What do you want to talk about?
Iris: Rachel, is there anything I can do?
Rachel: Yes, there is. You can tell me what you had to do with all this.
Rachel: I keep wondering how this happened. So few people knew about it. If anybody did find out about it, why would they want to go up to Sam on an important evening like this for him and then just blurt it out to him? Then you came through the door and I had my answer.
Iris: I wouldn't do anything to hurt Sam.
Rachel: No, of course you wouldn’t. He was just a casualty in your war against me.
Iris: That's ridiculous.
Rachel: Is it? Then, let's examine the facts, Iris. All the people that knew this information were either a member of my family or were connected with the gallery. We all had a vested interest, financial or emotional, in keeping this quiet, all except you.
Iris: All right. It was me.
Rachel: Don't you ever stop?
Iris: I didn't do it on purpose.
Rachel: Why did you do it at all?
Iris: Look, there was a memo in the office. It didn't occur to me that you'd be so stupid as not to tell Sam that you'd financed the gallery.
Rachel: If I choose to be stupid, Iris, it is none of your business!
Iris: Rachel, I resent that!
Rachel: You resent it?
Iris: Yes! I've done nothing but try and help you!
Rachel: How? How have you helped me?
Iris: Well, I helped you with Matthew, I -- I helped you reinstate yourself at Cory. My presence there this evening was to help Sam’s career.
Rachel: Do me a favor, Iris -- don't help me anymore, ok? I am perfectly capable of taking care of my own life and my family’s.
Iris: Yes, but not very well, apparently.
Rachel: We're going to be just fine, Iris, my family and me. My children know that I love them. Suppose you just take care of your own family.
Iris: I thought this was my family.
Rachel: I'm talking about your immediate family. Remember Dennis? Suppose you ask yourself why your own son doesn't want to talk to you anymore.
Iris: Hello? Hello, Dennis? Oh, please don't hang up, not this time. Hello. How are you? It's been such a long time, I miss you. You know it's the holiday season and we were all here and we were just wondering if perhaps -- perhaps you could come and see us. Don't say no, just think about it? It would be such a lovely Christmas present if you could come.
Iris: Please. I love you so much.
Singer: Have yourself a merry little Christmas make the yuletide gay from now on our troubles will be miles away
Singers: Miles away
Singer: Here we are as in olden day’s happy golden days of yore
Caroline: All raves, down to the last one.
Cass: Good. That's very nice.
Caroline: I really wish you hadn't upset Sam. I wish he'd stayed around.
Cass: I didn't want him to stay around.
Caroline: But it's what I've always wanted -- an artist with an exclusive.
Caroline: He's going to be so --
Cass: Would you please listen to me?
Cass: You received a telegram tonight.
Caroline: I hate telegrams.
Cass: I took the liberty of opening this one up because I thought it had to do with our new gallery deal. But I was wrong. I didn't want you to be alone when you read this.
Caroline: I don't want to read it.
Caroline: You've read the bloody thing. Just tell me what's in it.
Cass: Your mother.
Caroline: How bad is she?
Cass: She's gone.
Caroline: No. No!
Felicia: An awful lot to find out in one night.
Mitch: You were just a kid.
Felicia: Who could that be at this hour?
Mitch: I'll find out.
Sam: Hi. Uh, can I stay here tonight?
Mitch: Sure, come on in.
Mitch: What's happened?
Sam: Well, I -- I found out tonight why I got that showing. Rachel put up the money for the gallery.
Mitch: She what?
Sam: Well, at least you guys didn't know about it. Everybody else did. Even Amanda. See, that's why I can't go home tonight. I can't face her till I've had some time to think. Look, if it's a bad night, I -- I can go somewhere else.
Felicia: No, no, no, no, no. Don't be silly. It's fine. Just think about calling Amanda, will you, and let her know where you are? She loves you, Sam. No matter what's happened, she does love you. I'll go get some sheets, ok?
Sam: She knew, man. She knew and she didn't tell me.
Mitch: I'm sorry. Can I get you anything?
Sam: No. Um -- I just kind of want to be alone for a while. Thanks.
Sam: Amanda. Ah.
Amanda: Please, Sam. Please call.
Evan: Here you go. Ooh. You look cold.
