sophie: 300 yards. No, no, not cashmere -- silk, pure silk. Who mark this? Oh, no, cheri. I was not talking to you, but I must have this silk tomorrow. Ah, merci. Au revoir.

Evan: Bonjour, madame.

Sophie: Oh, bonjour. How can I help you?

Evan: We have an appointment with cass winthrop.

Sophie: This morning?

Evan: Yes, at 10:00 A.M.

Sophie: Oh. Pourquoi?

Caroline: He's not here?

Sophie: Oh, no. He and mademoiselle nicole were called away -- a crisis of the family.

Evan: Did he happen to mention when they -- you know, they might be back?

Sophie: Well, perhaps soon, perhaps not. He did not know. Oh, excuse moi. I have work I must do. Now, if you would care to wait --

evan: Yes, thank you.

Caroline: Well, would we [French accent] Care to wait, cheri?

Evan: Listen, this meeting is crucial. We don't get that loan from rachel without winthrop's approval.

Caroline: [Normal voice] What time is it?

Evan: What? I don't know. It's after 10:00. I misplaced my watch. I don't know.

Caroline: You didn't misplace your watch, darling. It was under my pillow.

Evan: Oh. Thank you.

Evan: Listen, you're going to have to meet with cass on your own.

Caroline: You really promised that you were going to be with me.

Evan: Well, I'm sorry, honey. I didn't know we'd be delayed, and I've got a desk full of work waiting for me at "brava."

Caroline: Oh, God. And here I was depending on you to cover me, you know, with your business mind.

Evan: Listen, you don't need me.

Caroline: You said cass is a really shrewd attorney.

Evan: That's his reputation. You've handled shrewd men before. All you need to do is just use your considerable powers of persuasion.

Caroline: Well, of course.

Julie ann: I'm sorry, mrs. Cory is in a meeting. All day, that's right. Yes, she's extremely busy. Fine, I'll take a message. That's the third time this man has called me.

Jamie: I take it she's extremely busy.

Julie ann: What else is new?

Jamie: Does she ever take a break?

Julie ann: Not that I've noticed. Is there anything I can do for you, jamie?

Jamie: Well, that smile of yours is more than enough. How are you?

Julie ann: A bit frantic, but otherwise pretty good. So, how are things with you?

Jamie: Oh, just peachy. Listen, is this meeting going to be one of those all-day things?

Julie ann: A marathon conference, but if I tell her that you're here, she'll --

jamie: No, don't bother. Just give her these reports. She left them at home this morning.

Julie ann: Oh, I'll give them to her right now.

Jamie: Thanks. I appreciate that.

Julie ann: It was nice seeing you.

Jamie: Yeah, you, too.

Amanda: Hold it, brother.

Jamie: Whoa, sis.

Amanda: You trying to avoid me?

Jamie: No, I just didn't see you.

Amanda: What are you doing here?

Jamie: Well, I came to see mom.

Amanda: Oh -- about her visit to vicky?

Jamie: What are you talking about?

Donna: Chris, someone told me that you lost a baby of your own. I wish I'd known. You see, we could've talked. Because I, too, lost a baby. I know how much it hurts. But taking someone else's child is not going to ease that pain. You know, I -- I go into mikey's room and I see his little teddy bear there, the one he sleeps with every night.

[Phone rings]

Vicky: Oh, my God.

Michael: Michael hudson.

Vicky: Dad, it's vicky.

Michael: Hi, honey. What's going on?

Vicky: Is there any word yet?

Michael: No. There's no word at all. Only that chris stopped at a store and bought some fishing gear and some children's clothing.

Vicky: That's it?

Michael: That's it. I mean, that's a lead. That's all they've got to go on.

Vicky: Well, you know, I went out with the volunteer search party last night.

Michael: Now, I don't want you overdoing it.

Vicky: Well, I st re ao

michael: Have you checked with your obstetrician?

Vicky: Oh, really, she won't let me do anything.

Michael: Look, I want you to stay in touch with me, all right? I'll be here all day. You call me back.

Vicky: No, I think going to come over and stay with mom.

Michael: Really? I think that's a good idea. I think shd like to see you. See you soon. All right.

Donna's voice: Um -- yeah, I want you to know that there's --

[Tv turns off]

Donna: She has to bring him back. She just has to.

Michael: Donna, if anything, that spot on tv will help persuade her.

Donna: How could any woman take a little boy from his parents like that?

Michael: I should've sensed a long time ago that she was dangerous, donna.

Donna: What are you talking about?

Michael: Remember the night of jamie's engagement party when chris was babysitting for mikey, and she called me up sick at tops and asked me to come home? She came on to me that night, donna.

jamie: Mom went to see vicky?

Amanda: You didn't know?

Jamie: How would I?

Amanda: Well, I thought she would've told you.

Jamie: No, nobody tells me anything!

Amanda: Keep it down.

Jamie: When did this happen?

Amanda: The other day.

Jamie: Why did she do this?

Amanda: Because even though she still wants you and lisa together, she's finally accepted the fact that vicky is carrying your child.

Jamie: She doesn't have to accept anything! I never asked her to get involved in this -- or you, either, for that matter!

Amanda: We're your family, jamie!

Jamie: Listen, I am perfectly capable of making my own decisions, thank you very much!

Amanda: Then what's stopping you?

Jamie: All right. So what did mom say to vicky?

Amanda: Not much. Actually, I was kind of disappointed.

Jamie: Oh. You were there?

Amanda: Well, yeah.

Jamie: Oh, terrific!

Amanda: I really wanted mom to reach out to vicky. So I -- I --

jamie: Oh, wait a minute, I get it.

You wanted mom to reach out, so you arranged this.

Amanda: I didn't arrange it. I just suggested --

jamie: I should've figured this.

Amanda: Look, come on. Don't be mad at me.

Jamie: Amanda, I have asked you over and over again to stay out of this! And here you are suggesting things that'll only make the situation worse! Will you please let me handle my own life for a change?

Amanda: Well, you're not doing a very good job of it!

Rick: Hope I'm not interrupting.

Amanda: You are.

Jamie: What do you want?

Rick: I'd like to talk to amanda.

Amanda: We are in the middle of a conversation!

Rick: Yeah, well, this is important. I've been meaning to contact you for the past couple of days, but with mikey hudson disappearing, it's --

amanda: Wait a minute. What's going on with mikey?

Rick: He's been kidnapped.

Amanda: No.

Jamie: You didn't know?

Amanda: I can't believe it. Vicky must be devastated. I know she adores that boy.

Jamie: Listen, amanda, I've got rounds at the hospital and I'm going to go check by michael and donna'S. Maybe I can do some -- do some good over there. I'll see you later.

Amanda: Well, do you have any leads at all?

Rick: Very little so far.

Sam: What are you two talking about?

Amanda: Little mikey hudson has disappeared.

Sam: You're kidding. When?

Rick: Well, it's been a couple of days now.

Sam: So you're handling the case, then?

Rick: Yeah, I'm trying to keep on top of it.

Sam: Uh-huh.

Amanda: Poor donna. And michael. I hope that you're a lot more considerate to them than you were to my family.

Rick: Well, actually, that's just what I wanted to speak to you about. I wanted to apologize for the way I behaved --

amanda: Don't bother. You're too late.

Rick: Well, at least give me a chance to explain.

Amanda: Look, you badgered us! You humiliated me, my father, my entire family. You think a little apology is going to wipe that out?

Rick: No, but I am sorry.

Amanda: "Sorry" isn't enough, not to make up for what you've done. Let's go, sam.

Donna: I knew something else happened that night. Why didn't you tell me?

Michael: Because it didn't make sense to me at the time, donna. I mean -- and I didn't want to upset you.

Donna: Is that all that happened?

Michael: Well, that's all that happened that night. But things got a little strange after that. Chris told john that I had come on to her, and then she told people that john had asked her to marry him. Of course, he didn'T.

Donna: For heaven's sakes, michael! That's enough to alert anyone that there's something wrong with her!

Michael: Well, it did, but it took a little while to put all the pieces together.

Donna: That was months ago! I mean, how many times did chris come into this house to see mikey and you let her? You even let her take him on a picnic!

Michael: Now, wait a minute!

[Doorbell rings]

Michael: John was with them that time, all right? Chris was never alone with mikey after that!

Donna: You already knew that she was disturbed!

Michael: No, I didn't know how disturbed she was, donna! Nobody did! Come on, they just found out last week that her baby died in vietnam.

Donna: If we don't get mikey back, it's all your fault. Do you think you can live with that?

Nicole: What's all the shouting about?

Donna: Oh!

Nicole: Donna?

Cass: I guess you didn't hear the doorbell.

Michael: No.

Cass: Sorry.

Michael: Excuse us. Donna's under a lot of stress.

Cass: Of course she is. Michael, if there's anything I can do, anything at all --

michael: Thanks, cass. I appreciate it.

Cass: Is there any news?

Michael: Uh, only that chris was seen buying some fishing gear and some child's clothing.

Cass: Well, it's not much, but it's something, isn't it?

Michael: Yeah. Yeah, the -- the police are combing all the fishing camps along the bay. It's going to take some time. Of course, they may not find anything, either.

Cass: Listen, michael, I have some contacts on the street that I could check with. These are people that don't like to deal with the cops, and they may know something.

Michael: Cass, you promise them anything. I will pay any amount, I don't care what it is. Mikey means everything to us.

Cass: I know he does.

Michael: Donna's going through hell here. If we don't get mikey back, I don't know how we're going to face our future.

Donna: I cannot believe that michael would keep something like that from me!

Nicole: Donna, what are you talking about?

Donna: He treats me like a child sometimes! You know he should've told me!

Nicole: Why are you so angry at michael?

Donna: Nicole, I'm sorry. I -- I really can't say. I mean, it really doesn't matter anyway because mikey's missing, so -- so nothing else does matter.

Nicole: Oh, donna. They'll find him.

Donna: Oh, I wish I could believe that.

Nicole: You have to.

Donna: Oh, nicole, I miss him so much.

Nicole: Oh, of course you do. But he'll come back. You wait and see.

Donna: I didn't tell you this, but -- but when he does come back --

nicole: Mm-hmm.

Donna: We might not be able to adopt him.

Nicole: What makes you think that?

Donna: Because mary said that -- that the board might take him away from us.

Nicole: Now, you know that michael would never let that happen.

Donna: I know, I know, but it's not just that. I mean, right now, what if something happens to him? I mean, chris is unstable, and what if she hurts him or -- or worse?

Nicole: Oh, donna, you can't think like that. Now, listen to me -- you're going to make yourself sick, and then what good would you to be mikey when he comes back, huh?

Donna: You really believe that?

Nicole: I really do. You have to believe that, too. Ok?

Donna: Yeah, I know.

Nicole: He will be back.

Donna: Oh!

Vicky: Hi.

Donna: Oh, victoria. Oh, honey, I'm so glad you're here.

Vicky: I know, it's all right.

Nicole: I'll be at the salon if she needs me.

Vicky: Ok.

Nicole: Ok.

Donna: Oh --

vicky: It's going to be all right. I know it's just going to be ok.

Julie ann: Mr. Cory isn't in.

Rick: When will he be?

Julie ann: He's scheduled no appointments all day.

Rick: All right. Well, then I'll just have to try again tomorrow. Thanks, anyway.

Julie ann: Wait, rick. I happened to notice what went on between you and amanda.

Rick: Yeah, well, I can't say that I enjoyed it, but I did have it coming.

Julie ann: You did try to apologize.

Rick: No, no, no. She had every right to act the way she did. I was rougher than I had to be with the corys in that investigation.

Julie ann: Yeah, I remember. But they'll forget in time, and so will you, rick.

Rick: I have a lot of fences to mend. That's why I wanted to see mr. Cory.

Julie ann: Well, listen, I'll leave him a note telling him that.

Rick: You know, I should've listened to you when you told me I was dead wrong about him.

Julie ann: Sorry you had to learn the hard way.

Rick: Well, I'll listen to you from now on.

Julie ann: Why did you come down so hard on him in the first place?

Rick: Well, it was my first big case. I guess I wanted to prove myself.

Julie ann: Bad move.

Rick: The worst. Also, the D.A. Was pushing for an indictment.

Julie ann: So it was political?

Rick: Oh, yeah. Yeah, unfortunately, a lot of things with the law are. Look, why -- why don't we change the subject, move on to something that doesn't remind me of what a jerk I was.

Julie ann: Sure.

Rick: You know, after this kidnapping case is finished, I'd -- I'd like to take you out to dinner, to thank you.

Julie ann: For what?

Rick: Well, I don't know if you noticed this, but you're the only one with a smile for me around here. And I really appreciate that, julie ann. So, what do you say?

Julie ann: We'll talk about it after your case is finished.

Rick: Ok.

Sophie: She is here since 10:00 and she is not happy waiting.

Nicole: Thank you, sophie. I'll take care of this.

Sophie: Bon chance.

Nicole: Good morning.

Caroline: Is it still morning?

Nicole: I'm sorry. I didn't realize you had an appointment this morning.

Caroline: 10:00 A.M.

Nicole: Oh. Uh, let me check my book.

Caroline: It isn't with you, dear.

Nicole: Oh, really? Well, then why are you here?

Caroline: I have a meeting with cass. Any idea when he's going to show up?

Nicole: Why would cass make an appointment with you?

Caroline: Business. Private matter.

Nicole: You mean it's none of my business.

Caroline: Oh, come on, don't be defensive, dear. It's obviously a very dreary matter that I have to pay attention to, and I just hope it's not so dreary that he's forgotten it.

Donna: Oh. Oh, honey, I'm sorry.

Vicky: For what?

Donna: I should be comforting you, not you me.

Vicky: Well, Mom, we're just going to comfort each other right now, ok?

Donna: Ok. It's just that why does everything have to go wrong all at the same time?

Vicky: What do you mean by that?

Donna: Well, not only is mikey missing, but I just find --

vicky: What else happened?

Donna: Do you know I never would have allowed chris near him if michael had just told me?

Vicky: Well, I don't understand --

donna: But I can't believe he wouldn't trust me enough to do it!

Vicky: All right, listen now. Whatever dad said or did not say, it is not important right now.

Donna: It is to me!

Vicky: All right. But once we find mikey, we can work that all out. Ok?

Donna: You're right. You're right.

Vicky: Now, you look a little run-down and you can't be run-down. You haven't gotten much sleep, have you?

Donna: No. No, and I can't seem to sleep these days because every time I do lay down, I just see that sweet little face of his.

Vicky: And you haven't been eating much.

Donna: No, not much.

Vicky: Well, you are going to eat something right now because mikey -- when he gets back, he's going to need all the attention and love that you have to give.

Donna: Now, where -- where are you going?

Vicky: To get you something to eat.

Donna: Victoria?

Vicky: What?

Donna: Honey, I think there's something else that we need to talk about.

Vicky: Is this about mikey?

Donna: No. It's -- it's about your sister.

Vicky: Mom, is there something wrong with marley?

Donna: Well, not yet, but there could be very soon.

Vicky: What do you mean?

Donna: Well, honey, I overheard something and I know it would just break marley's heart, and I don't know what to do about it.

Vicky: All right, what did you hear?

Donna: Lisa grady is going to try to steal jake away from her.

Vicky: Oh, come on, Mother.

Donna: No! No, it is true! You have to believe me. I was at the police station yesterday and I overheard lisa just singing jake's praises to that detective that she works with.

Vicky: And you think that means that lisa's going to go after jake? Forget that.

Donna: Would you think about it? What better way to get back at you than to ruin marley's marriage.

Vicky: Yeah, well, I wouldn't put that past her, but please don't worry about this now.

Donna: I can't help it! I am worried.

Vicky: Jake wouldn't fall for that! Do you know how much he's in love with marley?

Donna: Well, he seems to have a history of forgetting that.

Vicky: Stop that.

Donna: He is a womanizer!

Vicky: You've always been wrong about jake and you're wrong now.

Donna: No, wait just a minute. Has it ever occurred to you that maybe, just maybe, you have been the one that's always been wrong about him? I told you I am worried about marley, and I think she should be warned.

Vicky: No, she shouldn'T. Don't you dare say a word to marley. The last thing she needs right now is to hear about jake and lisa.

Evan: It only looks like a lot.

Julie ann: That's what you said about the last batch.

Evan: Well, that's because I lied.

Julie ann: When do you need it?

Evan: Um -- as soon --

julie ann: As possible. Right.

Evan: Julie ann, you've been terrific these last few weeks and I guess I should've told you before.

Julie ann: Well, you haven't had time. I know how busy you and mrs. Cory have been.

Evan: Well, she puts in more time than I have.

Julie ann: I don't know how she keeps up this pace.

Evan: Well, she doesn't want bennett to take over her husband's company. It's just giving her more stamina than she knew that she had.

Julie ann: But since drew marsten's been arrested, the takeover threat's gone, isn't it?

Evan: No, it's not -- far from it. You know, I wish it was. But anyway, I've -- I've got to get going.

Ronnie: Oh, hi, julie ann!

Julie ann: Ronnie! What are you doing here?

Ronnie: Amanda asked me to drop by.

Julie ann: Oh, I'll buzz her for you.

Ronnie: Thanks.

Julie ann: Amanda? It's ronnie. She'll be right out.

Ronnie: So how have you been?

Julie ann: Fine. We haven't crossed paths in ages.

Ronnie: I know.

Julie ann: So -- so what's going on with you?

Ronnie: Oh, sometimes I wonder myself.

Julie ann: Have you seen zach?

Ronnie: Yeah, yesterday. He asked me for a date.

Julie ann: Terrific!

Ronnie: I turned him down.

Julie ann: How come?

Ronnie: Because courtney's out of town and I'm not going to play second choice until number one comes back.

Amanda: Ronnie.

Ronnie: Hi.

Amanda: Hi. Thanks for coming by.

Ronnie: Oh, no problem.

Amanda: Do you want to sit down for a little while?

Ronnie: Sure. What's up?

Amanda: Well, you remember when I was pregnant.

Ronnie: Yeah, sure I do.

Amanda: Oh, well, you were so wonderful -- I mean, the way you set us up with lamaze classes and everything.

Ronnie: You're not, are you? No!

Amanda: No, no! No, but my friend vicky hudson is. Do you know her?

Ronnie: Yeah, I was her nurse when she was hospitalized last year.

Amanda: That's right, I forgot.

Ronnie: She's having a baby?

Amanda: Yeah, she is and she's all alone for right now.

Ronnie: Oh.

Amanda: I know it hasn't exactly been the easiest pregnancy for her. I think she could use some help.

Ronnie: Well, I'll give her a call and get her into classes.

Amanda: Thank you.

Ronnie: You know, being around other expectant moms will change her perspective a little bit.

Amanda: I hope so. I think it'll do her good, especially with mikey missing. I know she's really worried. I'm afraid she's not taking care of herself. That could be bad for her and for the baby.

Michael: Hey. How is she?

Vicky: Oh, scared, angry.

Michael: Did she tell you that she was upset with me?

Vicky: She started to, but we got on another subject. Dad, she's not making a lot of sense right now.

Michael: Well, this may not be the right time to try to reason with her.

Vicky: What happened?

Michael: Well, she thinks I knew more about chris' emotional instability than I let on.

Vicky: And did you?

Michael: No, not -- well, yes -- I don't know! I don't know! I --

vicky: It's all right. You don't have to explain it to me. I know it's a hard time for you.

Michael: I'm really glad you're here, honey.

Vicky: Thanks. Hey, would you make sure that mom eats something?

Michael: Ok, but you look a little tired yourself.

Vicky: Well, I don't think any of us have gotten a lot of sleep, you know?

Michael: Mm-hmm. Well, I'll tell you what -- I'll take care of your mom. You take care of yourself, all right?

Vicky: All right. Bye.

Michael: Bye.

Vicky: Oh --

michael: Yeah?

Vicky: Would you do me a favor?

Michael: Sure.

Vicky: Mom thinks something's going on between jake and lisa. If she brings it up, just tell her she's wrong.

Michael: Jake and lisa? Why would she think something is going on with jake and --

vicky: It's stupid, but she heard lisa say something yesterday at the police station --

michael: Oh, ok.

Vicky: And of course --

michael: All right.

Vicky: She doesn't trust jake.

Michael: I'll run it by your mom. I'll clear it up with her, don't worry.

Vicky: Thanks. And whatever's going on between you two, I just hope you work it out, ok?

Michael: We will. The important thing now is that we concentrate on finding mikey.

Nicole: I suppose you do a lot of traveling.

Caroline: Yeah, I'm always on the lookout for new and original artists.

Nicole: Well, that must be exciting.

Caroline: Well, it was in the beginning, but now it's just a job. I guess it's about as boring as yours.

Nicole: Oh, no. My work isn't boring at all.

Caroline: Oh. I'm sorry. I mean, you create, and I sell what others create.

Cass: We also serve who only create.

Caroline: Oh. A man who paraphrases milton shouldn't be wasting his time practicing law.

Cass: Oh, you're familiar with milton?

Caroline: What else does a lonely bachelor girl do to divert herself? You're late for my appointment.

Cass: My apologies. There was something rather important that I had to take care of.

Caroline: As opposed to me?

Cass: You're not letting me off the hook, are you?

Caroline: That's all right. But she told me about the little boy. It's dreadful, isn't it?

Cass: Yes.

Caroline: I forgive you, of course.

Cass: Thank you, thank you.

Caroline: Yeah, but my time's going to be short now.

Cass: Well, let's get to it, then, shall we? Yeah, uh -- this is a very confidential matter, you know.

Caroline: Well, I won't breathe a word to anyone.

Cass: Some people around here don't seem to understand what that means.

Caroline: I beg your pardon?

Cass: Nicole?

Nicole: Yes, cass. What is it?

Cass: Hi.

Nicole: Hi.

Cass: Caroline and I have a private business matter to discuss.

Nicole: Oh, that's all right. I'm not listening.

Cass: Oh. All right, then. Caroline, would you care to step up to my boudoir and we'll continue our discussion?

Nicole: No, never mind. Sophie needs my help upstairs.

Cass: Ah.

Nicole: That's ok. You just stay here.

Cass: Thank you.

Caroline: Ah, well.

Cass: Now, I want to make sure that my client's investment is secure -- the investment in your gallery, of course.

Caroline: Mrs. Cory's still concerned about that?

Cass: No, no, it's just a routine precautionary measure.

Caroline: Listen, my art gallery has always operated in the black.

Cass: Yes, well, we'll require confirmation of that.

Caroline: Oh, really?

Cass: Yes, really.

Caroline: Hmm.

Cass: You see, mrs. Cory's making a very substantial investment in your gallery. In fact, I was quite surprised when I found out just how much.

Caroline: Why is that?

Cass: Mrs. Cory usually is much more cautious with her investments.

Caroline: Listen, we both have a mutual interest in art, and I happen to have an excellent reputation as an art dealer.

Cass: Yes. This is true. I know that. I checked you out.

Caroline: Well, I gather you have reservations, then.

Cass: I just think that she could get a better return on an investment elsewhere.

Caroline: And what about her son-in-law?

Cass: Sam fowler?

Caroline: Is there another?

Cass: How does he figure into this?

Caroline: Well, I'm going to be representing him, and also, I'm showing him in a solo exhibit in chicago.

Cass: Oh. It's becoming more clear to me.

Caroline: Well, it better not become clear to anyone else.

Cass: How do you mean?

Caroline: Well, rachel doesn't want sam to know that she has anything to do with it.

Cass: No, this wouldn't sit very well with sam.

Caroline: No, and I've promised her that I won't tell anyone.

Cass: Well, whatever we discuss is strictly confidential, of course.

Caroline: Some men are rather known to reveal certain details to their fiancees?

Cass: Oh, really? Not this one.

Caroline: So it's settled, then.

Cass: Except for the confirmation of facts that I asked about.

Caroline: What does that entail?

Cass: Well, I'm going to have to examine your company books.

Caroline: Very well.

Cass: And since evan bates is cosigning this loan, I'll have to take a look at his financial records, as well.

Caroline: Well, that may take a few days to get together.

Cass: And the loan won't go through without my ok.

Caroline: I understand. I'll call you as soon as I'm ready, ok, and you can come up to my suite. We won't be disturbed there.

Cass: Fine.

[Doorbell rings]

Donna: I hope that's news about mikey.

Michael: Jamie.

Jamie: Hello.

Michael: Come on in.

Jamie: I was wondering how you two were holding up. I -- waiting to hear about mikey must be driving you crazy.

Donna: Great -- a condolence call.

Jamie: I really am very sorry.

Michael: Thanks, jamie.

Jamie: And if there's anything I can do --

donna: Look, this is a little more than I can handle.

Jamie: I understand.

Donna: Thank you for your concern, jamie.

Michael: It really is good of you to drop by, jamie.

Jamie: Yeah, I just can't believe this has happened.

Michael: Neither can we. We're all praying.

Jamie: How is vicky handling this?

Michael: Not very well. She was just by here a little while ago.

Jamie: Maybe I should drop by and see how she's doing, too.

Michael: I think she might appreciate that.

Jamie: All right, michael. Good luck.

Michael: Thanks, jamie.

Jamie: Ahem.

Donna: Well, that was certainly a surprise.

Michael: Oh, donna. Jamie's a good man.

Donna: Yes, well, good men do inexplicable things.

Michael: Perhaps we should talk about what happened with chris that night.

Donna: No, I don't think we should.

Michael: Where are you going?

Donna: I don't know!

Michael: Donna --

donna: I just know I need to get out of here.

Michael: Donna, come --

[Door closes]

Cass: What do I think?

Nicole: The truth.

Cass: Nicole, you know I love all your designs.

Nicole: But these two -- there's something missing.

Cass: I don't see it.

Nicole: Well, you have the best eyes of anyone I know.

Cass: Oh, please. That's very flattering, but I don't believe that for a second.

Nicole: Oh, no. It's the truth, cass.

Cass: Nicole?

Nicole: Yeah?

Cass: What are you after?

Nicole: I just wanted your opinion of my designs.

Cass: Yeah?

Nicole: That's all, yeah.

Cass: Ok, all right.

Nicole: So, how did your meeting with caroline go? Cass?

Cass: Did felicia call this morning?

Nicole: No, she didn'T.

Cass: Hmm.

Nicole: And you didn't answer my question.

Cass: That's right, I didn'T.

Nicole: Well, I'm waiting.

Cass: Nicole, there's a thing we call in the profession "confidentiality."

Nicole: You're not going to tell me.

Cass: I can'T.

Nicole: Well, it must have been pretty important to agree to go to her hotel suite.

Cass: Jealous, huh?

Nicole: No, I am nothing of the sort.

Cass: Hmm, hmm?

Nicole: No, I just don't like you shutting me out, especially right before we get married.

Cass: It's lawyer/client privilege.

Nicole: Really? Since when is caroline your client?

Cass: I'm acting on behalf of another client.

Nicole: Oh. Will the other client be in her hotel suite with you?

Cass: You're just going to have to trust me on this one.

Nicole: Well -- it's kind of hard to trust you when you fawn all over every attractive woman that you meet.

Cass: "Fawn"?

Nicole: Mm-hmm.

Cass: I don't fawn!

Nicole: Oh. Well, then, what would you call it?

Cass: I try to be charming to everyone, all right?

Nicole: Uh-huh.

Cass: Occasionally, that includes an attractive woman.

Nicole: Oh, cass --

occasionally?

Cass: Nicole?

Nicole: Hmm?

Cass: You're just going to have to accept certain things about me, just as I have to accept certain things about you. It's part of loving somebody. Kiss me.

Caroline: This is going to be an opening that bay city will never forget -- red carpets coming in from the limousines, and everyone's going to be coming to see your work.

Sam: Oh, you make it sound very special.

Caroline: It is special. It's the introduction of a major young painter.

[Sam sighs]

Caroline: Enjoy it, sam, because it's really never going to be the same again. Anyway, let's talk about what I need from you.

Sam: Ok, I'm listening.

Caroline: I love that sketch of Alli napping? If I could have a series of paintings like that, in that style --

sam: You want portraits of Alli?

Caroline: Yes.

Sam: Carolyn, I -- I'm not too sure about that, ok?

Caroline: It's caroline.

Sam: Right. Look, it's -- that sketch of Alli was just a -- it was an exercise. It's not my usual style.

Caroline: Have you got something against it?

Sam: I paint what I choose, caroline.

Caroline: Look, why don't you paint what sells? Then you can make lots of money and then you can paint what you jolly well like.

Sam: Ok, look, caroline, even if I did do it, I don't have enough time.

Caroline: We'll give you work time.

Sam: I've got a full-time job here at "brava." I've got a wife that works, I've got a baby. That doesn't leave a lot of free time for painting.

Caroline: Well, it's a shame. Your work's not going to get the attention that it deserves.

Julie ann: Sam, that was jeffrey tautman on the line. He needs you in graphics immediately.

Sam: Yeah. Look, I got to get going. Um -- I'll be in touch.

Caroline: Ok.

Evan: Well, hi. I have a few minutes. Would you like to come in?

Caroline: Yes.

Evan: Good.

Caroline: Oh.

Evan: So, did you see cass?

Caroline: Yes. He's quite a sharp one, evan.

Evan: What'd he say?

Caroline: He's not going to approve our loan until he sees both our financial statements.

Evan: Well, I'd expected that.

Caroline: Why didn't you tell me?

Evan: One of many things that I don't tell you.

Caroline: Oh, really?

Evan: Aren't there certain things that you hold back from me?

Caroline: Have you ever known me to hold back from you?

Evan: No, not in certain areas.

Caroline: Which reminds me -- I stopped by to pick up a few little things for the teeny little fridge in my suite.

Evan: Did you really?

Caroline: Hmm. So, we're not going to have to go out once we get there.

Evan: That's called smart planning.

Caroline: Hmm.

Evan: So I'll tell you what I'll do -- I'm going to get that financial report over to cass --

caroline: Mm-hmm.

Evan: And then I'm going to join you. Ok?

Caroline: Don't be long. Ok?

Evan: I won'T.

Evan: Unfortunately, a statement of my financial holdings back east won't be ready for a couple of days.

Cass: Oh. Well, I guess that'll have to be ok. I'll take a look at this in the meantime.

Evan: Now, when do you anticipate this loan going through?

Cass: I can't anticipate anything until I've seen all of this material. But you're a very thorough gentleman, so I'm sure there'll be no problem.

Evan: Well, see, caroline is so eager to go ahead with everything that she's already set up interviews with a couple of construction companies.

Cass: She's going to do extensive remodeling, is she?

Evan: Yes, from -- I guess, you'd say, from top to bottom.

Cass: Well, that's pretty much what we did here.

Evan: Yeah, I see. Um -- who did all this?

Cass: John hudson. He's a partner in frame construction now.

Evan: Hmm. Well, it's -- it's really good work. I mean, it's excellent. Now, you said frame construction?

Cass: Mm-hmm.

Evan: Well, I'll be sure to mention that name to caroline.

Cass: Don't bother. Rachel doesn't really hit it off with john's partner jason. If frame construction got the contract, you might not get the loan.

Julie ann: No, I'm sorry. Mr. Cory's not in today.

Amanda: Portraits?

Sam: Yeah, do you believe it?

Amanda: Well, I know you're not exactly crazy about sketching people.

Sam: Amanda, I hate sketching people.

Amanda: But you're good at it! Remember the people that you sketched at the diner on our honeymoon?

Sam: Amanda, I did that for kicks and cash.

Amanda: All right, what exactly did caroline say?

Sam: Caroline said that she wants to feature my work at this new opening. That's why she wants this whole new series of portraits.

Amanda: Oh, that's really hard to swallow, isn't it? "Featuring sam fowler's work." Why aren't you turning cartwheels?

Sam: Look!

Amanda: Come on.

Sam: I know it's flattering. I know that.

Amanda: It's a chance of a lifetime.

Sam: Yeah, but portraits? Come on!

Amanda: Sam, come on! Any other starting artist would do paint-by-numbers if it gave him this chance.

Sam: Ok, so I'll do it, but when am I going to find time?

Amanda: We'll work it out.

Sam: Amanda, I'm art director at "brava" here -- all day long. I've got you, I've got Alli --

amanda: We're not going to be a problem.

Sam: No, I -- I know. You're not going to be a problem. I just need time. I need lots of time.

Amanda: You can't -- you can't give up this chance. You'll quit your job.

Sam: I can't do that!

Amanda: I don't really see where you have much of a choice.

Sam: Amanda, this job means security!

Amanda: I know it's a gamble, but --

sam: "A gamble"? Yeah, it's a gamble. What if the show flops?

Amanda: There is no doubt in my mind that it will not flop.

Sam: Oh, yeah.

Amanda: And even if it does, at least you gave it a shot. I don't want you to be 70 years old sitting around here wondering what would've happened if. Come on! Give it a shot, sam!

[Amanda chuckles]

Sam: Uh-huh.

Vicky: That's it? Well, that isn't enough! We have to find him! Yeah, I'm sorry, yeah. Well, call me when you hear anything, would you? Right. Bye. Mikey! Come on, mikey. Where are you? Why can't you just show up or call?

[Knock on door]

[Knocking]

Jamie: Vicky? Vicky, are you in there? It's jamie!

Vicky: Go away!

Jamie: I want to talk to you.

Vicky: Well, I -- I need to be alone right now, all right?

Jamie: Vicky, I know about mikey. I thought maybe you'd like to talk.

Vicky: I don't want to talk to anyone.

Jamie: Even the father of your child?

[Knock on door]

Evan: Come in.

Amanda: Evan? Sorry to bother you.

Evan: Oh, it's fine. Please, come in. Some smile you got on your face. Do you have good news?

Amanda: I have fantastic news! And actually, you're responsible.

Evan: Well, sit down. Let me know what I did.

[Amanda chuckles]

Amanda: You introduced caroline to sam's work. She's going to use him as the feature in her new gallery opening.

Evan: Well, that's great. I mean, I must confess I hoped this might happen because all sam needs is just the right people to see his work.

Amanda: And he needs some time. Caroline has asked him to do some more paintings, and he's going to have to devote himself to this full-time.

Evan: Full-time?

Amanda: I've convinced him to leave his job here.

Evan: Oh, you have, have you?

Amanda: Uh -- I'm sorry, evan. I know this puts you in a really difficult position trying to find a new art director.

Evan: Yeah. Good ones aren't easy to come by.

Amanda: Sam's career comes first. I just hope this whole thing doesn't backfire.

Evan: Well, then, why would it?

Amanda: Because sam's a very proud man.

Evan: Mm-hmm.

Amanda: Sometimes, too much.

Evan: Well --

amanda: And if he finds out that caroline is getting financed by my mother, well, I'm sure he's not going to agree to the commission that she's asked for.

Evan: Well, that's fine, but one has nothing to do with the other.

Amanda: I'll let you tell him that.

Evan: All right, I will if you want me to.

Amanda: Aren't you mad about him leaving?

Evan: Actually -- well, I'm impressed. You see, it's very rare that you find a wife who puts her husband's ambitions ahead of everything else.

Amanda: Sam's ambitions are everything to me.

Evan: Really? Then he's a very lucky man.

Michael: No, no, no. There's nobody here by that name. Yeah. Yeah, thank you very much. Donna, we have to talk. Donna, we have to talk.

Donna: I really just want to be alone.

Michael: No, you're not going to be alone. Look, neither of us should be alone at a time like this. Donna, i need you. If you're going to be angry, fine! Be angry, but don't shut me out! Talk to me!

Donna: What's the point?

Michael: Don't you think I'm suffering enough for what's happened here? Don't you think I would've handled things differently if I had had any idea about how unbalanced chris was? Come on, donna, don't blame me!

Please. Just talk to me.

Donna: I'm sorry. Oh, honey, I'm sorry.

Michael: I know. Donna, we got to stick together here. We just have to stick together and work together to try to find mikey.

Donna: I know. I just feel so powerless, so alone.

Michael: I know. But we have each other. And we will find mikey. I promise you that, donna.

Vicky: So what'd you want to see me about?

Jamie: Well, I wanted to make sure you were all right. Is it that surprising?

Vicky: No. It's very sweet.

Jamie: You look a little -- a little tired. Have you been sleeping?

Vicky: No, I keep having nightmares about mikey crying for me or for donna or for help from anyone!

Jamie: Mikey's going to be ok.

Vicky: Yeah, and then I have nightmares about my baby!

Jamie: Our baby.

Vicky: What if something goes wrong like this, jamie? What if something happens?

Jamie: I will never let anything happen to our baby. He's going to be healthy and happy and he's going to have everything he needs.

Vicky: And what if he is a she, huh?

Jamie: Well, equal rights, of course.

Vicky: Of course. Nothing but.

Jamie: Well, here, I -- I'd better go.

Vicky: Jamie? Thanks for making me open the door. I feel much better.

Jamie: Well, just remember -- you never have to fear for our baby, never. I'll make sure of that.

Vicky: Oh!
