Cass: I'll sneeze when I hear one.

Wallingford: Ow! Oh!

Cass: What was that?

Wallingford: Oh! I bumped into one of those stupid boxes.

Cass: No, no, not that. I heard something.

Wallingford: Probably a rat.

Cass: Shh. Listen.

Wallingford: Cass, all I hear is the rain on the roof.

Cass: Shh.

Cass: I guess you're right.

Wallingford: It's coming down heavy, isn't it?

Cass: Ok, come on. Let's get out of here before the driver leaves us stranded.

[Door closes]

M.J.: So Chad tells me you're going to stay in Bay City.

Dawn: I just hope I don't get in everyone's way.

Chad: Oh--

Scott: Hey, how could you possibly get in anyone's way?

M.J.: Uh-oh. Dawn, watch out for this one, ok?

Chad: I think that's what big brothers are for, don't you?

Scott: Mm-hmm.

M.J.: Anyway, if you need anything, please call me.

Scott: Or me. What? I mean to call me if she needs to call me.

Chad: Hey, what do you say we get a carafe of wine? A toast to Dawn.

M.J.: Ok. Oh, I'll--I'll go, too.

Scott: M.J. is a really nice girl. I'm sure you're going to like her a lot.

Dawn: I'm-I'm sorry. Were you talking to me? I'm sorry.

Scott: Look, Dawn, I understand what you're going through. Believe me, you don't have to try to pretend, ok?

Dawn: I don't know. It's just been so hard, you know? I mean, I didn't even know my mom. I'm not even-- I'm not sure how I'm supposed to...

Adam: Hey, Scott. I'm glad I found you.

Scott: Adam.

Adam: Listen, I got some things I got to give back to Zack. You think you could get them to him by tomorrow morning?

Scott: Sure thing.

Adam: Great.

Scott: This is Dawn Rollo. Adam Cory.

Adam: Rollo? You're not Chad's sister, are you?

M.J.: Hi, Adam.

Adam: M.J. Chad... Scott here was just introducing me to your sister.

Chad: Dawn, this is Adam Cory.

Dawn: Hi. Nice to meet you.

Adam: Hi.

Dawn: Why don't you join us?

Adam: Uh...No, thanks. Scott and I have got a few things to discuss, a few legal matters.

Scott: Yeah. Let's, uh, grab another table over there. I'll be right back, ok? Excuse me.

Dawn: I, uh, I guess I said something wrong, right?

[M.J. Sighs]

Donna: Mmm--no--no...

Vicky: Oh, Michael.

Vicky: How am I ever going to tell you?

Donna: Don't ever do something like that again.

John: Like what?

John: What was I doing?

Donna: Taking advantage of my feelings for you.

John: Why shouldn't I... When I share those same feelings?

Donna: No. No, they are not the same.

John: Is that what you keep telling yourself?

Donna: Stop it.

John: That what you feel for me is less?

Donna: Yes, it is.

John: Why? Because you don't have the same feelings for Michael?

Donna: My love for Michael is pure and good.

John: I'm not looking for pure and good.

Donna: This is wrong.

John: This is real!

Donna: Just leave.

John: Did that make you happy? Will you be able to forget me for a second time?

Donna: Yes, damn it. Yes!

John: I don't believe you.

Donna: Well, what am I going to have to do? What do you want me to say to you?

John: Nothing.

Donna: That kiss meant nothing.

John: That kiss has been waiting for 20 years!

Donna: No! No!

John: Donna, we can't pretend that this has never happened.

Donna: Oh---

Vicky: I hate you. I hate both of you.

Clara: Vicky...Out in all that rain.

Jamie: Your blood pressure's up again.

Clara: She's gone down to the beach house to look for Donna. I just know she has.

Jamie: It's only a little bit of rain. You're the one I'm worried about.

Bridget: Dr. Frame is right, you know. You must start thinking about yourself now, Miss Clara.

Jamie: Bridget, would you get Clara a glass of water, please?

Bridget: Yes. I've got it right here. Here. There you go, and here are her pills, too.

Clara: And she was so upset earlier.

Bridget: Now Mr. Peter has gone out to find her.

Jamie: You promised me you'd start taking your pills, Clara.

Clara: Well, I must have forgotten.

Jamie: Clara, you can't afford to forget. Now please, take this will you?

Clara: Oh... I'm just so afraid she'll hurt herself.

Jamie: Listen to me. I'm more afraid of you hurting yourself.

Clara: I think maybe if I go, I could find her.

Jamie: Clara. Clara. Clara. If I go look for her, will you take your pill, please... And try to stay calm? Good.

Bridget: Dr. Frame, maybe I should go.

Jamie: No. No, no, no. You stay here with her. Make her some tea and keep her calm, ok?

Bridget: Do you think she's going to be all right?

Jamie: I'll check her again when I come back.

Bridget: But...

Clara: And if the car isn't at the beach house, be sure to check along the--the beach.

Bridget: Do you think she's out there in all that rain?

Clara: Yes. I don't want her to get hurt.

Jamie: Bridget, why don't you go make the tea now?

[Bridget mumbles]

Jamie: I'll find Vicky... I promise.

Cass: So, what shall we do, Wally? Should we do something fun tonight? Cheap and fun?

Wallingford: Oh. I got to work the dinner shift at Tops.

Cass: Oh, great. Well, maybe I have-- oh, no.

Wallingford: What's wrong?

Cass: I lost a cuff link.

Wallingford: So?

Cass: Well, it's a special cuff link, Wally. These are a special pair. I got to go back inside.

Wallingford: Cass, the limo's here.

Cass: Well, why don't you go, and I'll catch up with you later?

Wallingford: What's the big deal?

Cass: It's sentimental, Wally. These were a gift from Kathleen. I'll--I'll--I'll get back on my own, all right?

Wallingford: But, Cass, it's so dark in there. I don't think you'll ever find it.

Cass: 50 bucks says I do.

Wallingford: You're on.

[Both laugh]

Cass: Now you got to get out of here, because you got to go earn the money that you're going to owe me when you lose this bet.

Wallingford: [Laughs] Look who's talking. Easiest 50 bucks I ever made.

Cass: Oh, get out of here. Here. Take this. Get out of here. I love ya. Get out.

[door opens]

[door closes]

[Donna coughs]

John: Why don't you just face it, Donna?

Donna: Just leave me alone.

John: You lied to Michael.

Donna: I didn't want to hurt him.

John: You came back here over and over--

Donna: Yes, to make you leave!

John: You kissed me!

Donna: I wish I'd never laid eyes on you.

John: So you wouldn't have to face the fact that you want me? That you still want me--

Donna: No! No, you forced me!

John: Then why aren't you leaving?

[Rain falling]

John: Don't run away again, Donna. Not again.

Donna: I have a home now... And a family. I have my own life, John.

John: Do you? Are you still lying to yourself?

John: Running away is the easy part, Donna. All you do is put one foot in front of the other.

Donna: I wish you'd never come back.

John: I never wanted to come back here.

Donna: Well, I never wanted to go to Singapore.

John: There you were, 20 years and a million miles later standing right in front of me.

Donna: With Michael... Always with Michael.

John: You say that like he's protecting you.

Donna: He was... And he is.

John: From what? Your true feelings? From me?

Donna: Michael is my husband.

John: Then go to him. Call him. Run to him, just like you did in Philadelphia.

Donna: I will.

John: And when you come back, I'll be here... Waiting.

John: Here's to those who run.

John: And here's to those who have stopped running.

Adam: Scott?

Scott: Huh? What? I'm sorry. What?

Adam: [Laughs] I guess I shouldn't have taken you away from--

Scott: No, no. It's no problem.

Adam: Now look, right here is the entire transcript of this thing.

Scott: Wait a minute. You're saying the guy confessed?

Adam: It's just what I got through telling you. Where have you been?

Scott: I was in New York, believe it or not.

Adam: What?

Scott: I guess I got some jet lag.

Adam: Well, listen, you tell Zack if he wants to see that video tape, he's got to come down to headquarters tomorrow.

Scott: Well, listen, I know he's going to be at the courthouse filing for Mary and Vince.

Adam: Filing? Filing for what?

Scott: The divorce. I'm sorry. I thought you knew.

Adam: Wait a minute. I thought things were going along pretty well.

Scott: It was looking that way.

Adam: Mary moved back into the house.

Scott: Yeah, but it wasn't really her house anyway.

Adam: What do you mean?

Scott: Vince could never understand that.

Adam: I guess things have been pretty tough.

Scott: Let's just say she's had a rough year, Adam.

Adam: Yeah, with the marriage being called off.

Scott: Mm-hmm. Kathleen.

[Adam sighs]

Scott: She's had to put up with a lot this year.

Adam: Yeah. Still, I thought--I thought all these things were bringing her and Vince back together again.

Scott: I think Vince wants Mary McKinnon and not my mom.

Adam: Are they so different?

Scott: I don't know, but I know that she's getting tired of trying to be what Vince remembers her to be.

Scott: Listen, we're all through here, right?

Adam: Yeah. Scott.

Scott: Yeah?

Adam: Listen, tell your mom... Well, just tell your mom I'm sorry, huh?

Scott: I will. You take care of yourself. See ya.

Scott: Some crazy songs there, huh?

Dawn: Yeah. There's a whole section here from the thirties and from the forties.

Scott: Yeah, well, Gino loves his Cole Porter.

Dawn: It's strange. I don't know even if my mom had a favorite.

Scott: I used to think that way myself.

Dawn: What do you mean?

Scott: See, I was adopted, and I went through this whole period always wondering what my real mom was like.

Dawn: What'd you finally do?

Scott: I'll show you. Ahem. First, you got to close your eyes, ok?

Dawn: Now?

Scott: Uh-huh.

Dawn: Ok.

Scott: Ok. Now I want you to push a button.

Dawn: Any button?

Scott: Mm-hmm.

Dawn: Ok.

Scott: Hwa--

[both laugh]

Scott: Ok. That's good. All right.

[Someone to watch over me playing]

Scott: From now on, that's your mom's favorite song.

Dawn: I have a feeling it's going to be my favorite, too.

Someone who'll watch over me

Cass: Ok, 2 can play at this game.

[Cat meows]

Woman: Oh, damn! The south side --

Cass: "Barbara van Arkdale?"

Cass: "Barbara van Arkdale."

Dawn: George Gershwin, what a genius.

Scott: How'd you know that?

Dawn: I'm a music major. Someone to watch over me. That's something that my mom needed and I had.

Scott: What's that?

Dawn: Jack. You know what he did? He made me believe that it was my mom sending me all these letters and remembering my birthdays.

Scott: And she didn't do that?

Dawn: I mean, I've known about it for a little while. I only told him today.

Scott: He just doesn't seem like the type.

Dawn: He is. He just wanted me to believe that my mother loved me.

Scott: Was she the one that sent you away?

Dawn: No. Chad did. She, um, she drank a lot and there was a lot of other stuff.

Scott: But you said that you remembered a lot of little things about her, though.

Dawn: Yeah. Her perfume and her laugh. I remember her laugh.

Scott: Listen, I bet your mom really loved you in spite of all the things she did.

Dawn: That's what Chad says, but, um, I just think he's saying that to make me happy.

Scott: Well, come on, you're in Bay City right now!

Dawn: And Chad and I are finally together.

Scott: Great, so some dreams come true after all, huh?

Dawn: I hope his dreams come true.

Scott: Chad's?

Dawn: I just don't want to be a drag.

Scott: Listen, your brother loves you. Everybody knows that, ok?

Dawn: Can I ask you a question?

Scott: Mm-hmm.

Dawn: Does he like M.J.?

Scott: Of course he likes her.

Dawn: No, you know what I mean. I mean, M.J. told me about her and Adam and I just...

Scott: Well, I just think it's hard to understand how they're feeling right now.

Dawn: Well, if it's one thing I've learned, if life isn't going the way you expect it to go, you just take one deep breath and you start another song.

Scott: Like Someone to watch over me?

Dawn: Exactly.

Scott: Well, I just happen to have another quarter.

Dawn: Well, what are we waiting for?

Scott: Same song?

Dawn: Play it again, Scott.

There's a somebody I'm longing to see I hope that he turns out to be...

Jamie: Vicky!

Vicky: Go away. Just go away.

Jamie: What are you doing out here?

Jamie: Are you all right?

Vicky: Leave me alone!

Jamie: Hey, it's me, Jamie. It's all right.

Vicky: Go away. Please.

Jamie: What happened?

Vicky: What do you care? What does anyone care?

Jamie: You're shaking. Here, hold this, will you?

Vicky: Did you hear me?! Just go away!

Jamie: What's the matter with you? I'm just trying to help.

Vicky: Well, I don't need your help. I don't need anyone's help.

Donna: Clara.

Clara: Donna. You've been at the beach house, haven't you, haven't you?

John: Donna, you can't keep running.

Clara: I want you two to stop this right now! This has gone far enough.

Clara: Where have you two been?

Donna: Clara, how are you feeling?

Clara: I'm all right. Dr. Frame was here.

John: Why? What's wrong?

Clara: That's what I intend to find out.

John: Mom, if there's something wrong with you, I want to know what it--

Clara: Now this is not about me. I want to know where you two have been.

John: Well, whose version of this do we use? Mine or yours?

Donna: Has Michael called? I was hoping he'd come back tonight.

John: I guess that's my answer.

Donna: You should have known.

John: We were at the beach house, mom. It's almost finished. I guess I am, too.

Clara: And what happened?

Donna: Nothing. Nothing happened.

Clara: John?

John: Donna has the official version.

Clara: Answer me!

John: I guess you were right, mom. You were absolutely right. This has gone too far.

Clara: Where are you going? John?

Donna: Clara... Nothing happened. I swear it.

Clara: You're cold and wet. You'd better get out of those clothes.

Donna: Please, you have to believe me.

Clara: My son needs me.

Donna: Nothing happened. Nothing.

Jamie: Here, put this on.

Vicky: You're getting all wet, doc. Go home before you get sick.

Jamie: You're coming with me.

Vicky: I'm not going anywhere!

Jamie: This isn't about you. Your grandmother's worried.

Vicky: Did you see her? Is she all right?

Jamie: She will be. She hasn't been taking her medication.

Vicky: Why not?

Jamie: You tell me. She won't say anything and she's under too much stress.

Vicky: I know how she feels.

Jamie: Why?

Vicky: Do you get off being sir Galahad?

Jamie: I just thought maybe I could help.

Vicky: Well, you can't!

Jamie: You said before it had something to do with your father.

Vicky: He's being used, Jamie! But what's new? We all are.

Jamie: Where are you going?

Vicky: Away. I'm going away from all this hypocrisy and lying.

Jamie: Oh, come on.

Vicky: Don't get involved with me, doc. I'm trouble. It follows me wherever I go.

Jamie: Would you stop feeling sorry for yourself? I'll take you back to the beach house.

Vicky: I don't want to go back there! I'm never going back there! Just get away!

Jamie: Stop this! You're gonna hurt yourself.

Vicky: Yeah, so what? Why should I be any different than the rest of my family?

Jamie: I'm taking you home.

Vicky: Home? You know, that's a real laugh.

Jamie: Listen, you may not want to talk with me right now, but you're gonna need a friend.

Vicky: Doc, did anyone ever tell you that a doc can't solve everything?

Jamie: Yep. My mother. Come on.

M.J.: Was that the captain?

Adam: Uh, no, no, it was the garage. They were just telling me my car was ready.

M.J.: How is the captain?

Adam: He's fine.

M.J.: Tell him hi for me, ok?

Adam: M.J.

Adam: Um, I heard about your parents.

M.J.: Oh, you mean about the divorce?

Adam: Yeah.

M.J.: Well, I guess this hasn't been a great year for the McKinnons, at least as far as marriage is concerned.

Or is it just a lonely heart again? Are you really ready for love, boy, or is it lonely to be pretend

Dawn: He's a pretty special guy.

Scott: It must run in your family.

Dawn: He just looks so lonely.

Scott: Just give him time. Maybe he won't be.

Dawn: What?

Scott: Things have a way of working themselves out.

Dawn: Is this a personal philosophy of yours?

Scott: Look at you. You've been in Bay City, what, a couple of days and already you're popular?

Dawn: Oh, I wish.

Scott: We're friends, aren't we?

Dawn: I hope so.

Scott: You don't sound too sure about that.

Dawn: Well, no, it's just that everything's happened so fast and I'm not really used to having a bunch of friends.

Scott: Dawn, somehow, I find that hard to believe.

Dawn: I guess I'm a little shy, except on airplanes, and on airplanes, I'm just plain scared, so...

Scott: So what you're saying is that I met you at the worst possible time under the best possible conditions?

Dawn: Yeah, something like that.

Scott: Well, see, there you go. Things do have a way of working themselves out.

Dawn: Yeah, you did say that, didn't you?

Scott: Ok, so stop worrying about Chad, and besides, I think you're gonna be good luck for him here.

Dawn: I just hope he doesn't worry too much about me.

Scott: Why would he?

Dawn: It's nothing.

Scott: What?

Dawn: It's just a dream I have.

Scott: Well, can you tell me?

Dawn: Just all my life I have lived in boarding schools with 4 girls to a room and I would just like to have an apartment of my own.

Scott: But you think big brother won't approve of that.

Dawn: He likes to think he's taking care of me.

Scott: I can understand that.

Dawn: Well, do you know how much a room at Tops costs?

Scott: Not cheap.

Dawn: He's gonna be broke in a couple of days.

Scott: What's your money situation?

Dawn: I need a job.

Scott: I'll keep my eyes open.

Dawn: For the job or for the apartment?

Scott: For the job. I already know where you can find an apartment.

Dawn: Oh, really? Where?

Scott: A restaurant called Mary's Place. They rent out apartments upstairs.

Dawn: Is it nice?

Scott: Not as nice as Tops, but there is this guy who lives there who I think you'll probably get along with.

Dawn: A guy?

Scott: Yeah. Is there something wrong with that?

Dawn: No, it's just that I thought that you, um, I thought that I... Never mind, no, I-I'll meet him.

Scott: You already have.

Dawn: What?

Scott: It's me. What do you say?

Woman: Hyah!

Cass: You're not goin' anywhere!

Clara: Oh, here.

Clara: You dropped these.

John: Thanks.

John: I've packed this thing so often in the past 20 years, you'd think I'd have it down to a science by now, wouldn't you?

Clara: Well, maybe leaving doesn't come as natural to you anymore.

John: Maybe not, but that doesn't change anything. I have to go this time, mom.

Clara: I know you do.

Clara: Oh, John...

John: Mom, come here. Sit down with me for a second.

John: Are you gonna tell me why Dr. Frame was here?

Clara: Oh, it was nothing.

John: Mom.

Clara: I had a little dizzy spell.

John: Well, that's not nothing!

Clara: I'm all right.

John: This whole thing has been very hard on you, hasn't it?

Clara: Well, my family is all I have. I can't let it fall apart.

John: Don't worry about Donna and Michael. I'm not going to interfere. Hell, I rebuilt their beach house for them. That oughta count for something.

Clara: Well, I can't let you fall apart, either. You've been running against the same wall for 20 years now.

John: I know, I know. I just can't help it. I wish I could.

Clara: John, it has to stop.

John: That's what good-byes are all about.

Clara: I hate that word!

John: Come on, now, mom, none of that.

Clara: Am I the reason? Am I pushing you away again?

John: I'm not running this time.

Clara: You mean you might stay in Bay City?

John: No, I'm not gonna give you any promises.

Clara: All right. I'm gonna miss you so much.

John: We'll see each other.

Clara: I hope so.

John: I'm not running away.

John: I lost you for 20 years, too, you know?

Clara: Oh, John...[Sobs]

John: Mom... I really do love her.

Clara: I know you do, dear, but Donna is married to Michael.

[Door shuts]

John: Well, maybe now they can be happy together.

Bridget: Victoria! Oh, my dear! You're soaking wet! What happened to you?

Vicky: I'm all right, Bridget.

Jamie: Maybe you can get us a couple of towels, huh, Bridget?

Bridget: Yes, I could. Oh, she's so cold. Maybe I should get her a blanket, too?

Jamie: How's Clara doing?

Bridget: Oh, she's uh, she's better, better.

Jamie: Any change?

Bridget: She's upstairs.

Vicky: Sleeping?

Bridget: Well, Miss Donna came and Mr. John rushed after her and they all went out.

Vicky: They came in together?

Bridget: I'm not sure, dear. I mean, I was out in the kitchen fixing food. I...

Jamie: Maybe you could get her to eat something, too.

Bridget: Oh, I'm very good at that.

Jamie: Is there something going on up there that I should know about?

Vicky: Don't get involved in this, Jamie.

Jamie: Looks like I already am, doesn't it?

Vicky: It's not Grandma. It's Michael and Donna.

Jamie: Are they in trouble?

Vicky: It's gonna hurt Michael so much.

Vicky: It's gonna break his heart.

Jamie: You know, it might help if you could talk about it.

Bridget: Here we go. Put this around you to get you all dried off, then we're going to put you in some nice, warm clothes now. Yes.

Vicky: Well, it's been a long day, doc. You better get home.

Jamie: Yes, it has. You'll be ok?

Bridget: Oh, now don't you worry. I'm going to take good care of her.

Jamie: You call me if there's any trouble.

Bridget: Oh, yes, that's right. Right away.

Bridget: There, now. There, now. We're going to get you all dried out. I want you to come into the kitchen with me because we're going to fix you something to eat.

Vicky: Oh, Bridget, I'm fine. I can't eat, really. I just want to go to bed.

Bridget: Well, I'm going to fix it for you and I'm going to bring it upstairs.

John: Well, Vicky, it looks like you can have your old room back.

Clara: Victoria, thank goodness you're all right.

Vicky: Oh, I'm fine, Grandma. Jamie found me at the beach.

John: A little cold to be swimming, isn't it?

Vicky: What do you care?

John: Good-bye, Bridget. Thank you for everything.

Bridget: Oh, you're very welcome, Mr. John.

John: Wait a minute, now, I thought we had agreed that you were gonna call me John, not Mr. John.

Bridget: I guess it's just a bad habit.

Vicky: You're really moving out?

John: That's right.

Clara: John, you will call me now and then, won't you?

John: I'll be in touch.

Vicky: You're not moving into my beach house.

John: That belongs to Donna and to Michael... Just like everything else around here.

Vicky: You're not coming back?

John: You're on your own, kid.

John: You take care.

Clara: I don't think I can bear to watch you go.

Bridget: Oh, come on, now. Come on, Clara, we'll go into the kitchen and we'll have a cup of tea.

Vicky: Yeah, come on, Grandma. We'll go with Bridget.

Donna: John?

Donna: John, are you in here?

[Engine starts]

Donna: No!

Cass: I don't believe it.

Woman: Cass?

Cass: Nicole Love?!

Donna: John?! No. No.
