Dusty: Meg thought that if you got your child back, then you and I would be together, no matter what. She knew that's what I wanted, anyway. But that was before --

Jennifer: Before?

Dusty: I mean, before you got Johnny back. I understand if things have changed.

Jennifer: Everything's changed.

Dusty: Yeah. That's what I figured. I should've guessed.

Jennifer: I've wished for you every waking moment. Even before I got Johnny back. That never changed. Every day since I sent you away, I wake up aching for you. Every night, I dreamed this. This moment, right here. You, standing there. You coming to me.

Meg: Hello? Is someone here? Are you hurt? I'm a nurse. I can help. [Paul groaning] Paul. Oh, my God. Paul, what happened to you?

Paul: I got shot.

Meg: Shot? Oh, my God. Oh, my God. Okay, just stay with me. Who did this?

[Paul remembering]

Paul: Hunters.

Meg: Hunters? In the middle of the night? Okay, okay, when? Paul. Paul, okay, come on, we have to get to the hospital. Come on.

Paul: No, no, no, no. No hospital.

Meg: Paul, this is serious. I can't treat you out here. You need an emergency room.

Paul: No. No one can know. Nobody.

Susan: I hate to see you hurt like this. But I honestly believe that if Paul Ryan is out of your life forever, it's a good thing. He should be out of everybody's life forever. Oh, I know it sounds harsh. But he should be in solitary. They should throw away the key. Emily, are you cold?

Emily: I'm fine.

Susan: Sweetie, how can you be fine? You're shaking like a leaf.

Emily: I know what to do.

Susan: Your hands are like ice.

Emily: It was cold.

Susan: Where?

Emily: It was cold.

Susan: Where, sweetie?

Emily: I know what to do.

Susan: About what? About Paul? I don't know what you're talking about.

[Phone ringing]

Lily: Hello?

Holden: Hey, it's me.

Lily: Holden, it's late.

Holden: Yeah, I know.

Lily: Is something wrong with Luke? With the girls?

Holden: No, no, they're fine. They're all home in bed.

Lily: Why aren't you?

Holden: I couldn't sleep.

Lily: Look, I have to go.

Holden: Wait, wait, I just -- I want to talk to you.

Lily: You shouldn't have called here.

Holden: Isn't Keith asleep?

Lily: I don't think so. He was in his room, the door was closed. I think he's on the phone.

Holden: You guys are in separate rooms?

Lily: Yes. What did you think?

Holden: That he was pushing you, and I didn't know --

Lily: You know.

Holden: I miss you. Meet me out front.

Lily: What?

Holden: On the porch. I'm at Java, I'll be there in a few minutes.

Lily: I don't think so.

Holden: We'll be quiet. Just make sure that Keithís door is closed.

Lily: No.

Holden: I just want to see you. That's all.

Lily: Right.

Holden: Unless you absolutely force me. In which case, you'll win. Say yes.

Keith: Lily?

Lily: I've got to go.

Keith: It's the middle of the night.

Lily: Yes, you should be sleeping.

Keith: So should you. But since you're up, I've got some big news.

Lily: What news?

Keith: I've got a friend in San Diego. He's got a charter business. He offered me a job as a senior pilot. I took it.

Lily: You're going to San Diego?

Keith: We're going.

Lily: We?

Keith: Yeah, yeah. Pack your bags. We leave for California tomorrow.

Lily: You must be joking.

Keith: I'm not going to joke about a great job like this.

Lily: Great?

Keith: Yeah.

Lily: Great for you. But I can't just -- I can't just pack up and leave at a moment's notice.

Keith: Look, Lily, I'm not going to find a job like this around here. You must've seen this coming.

Lily: I did?

Keith: Yeah.

Lily: No, there is no way that I would even think that you'd take a job in California and I'd have to go with you.

Keith: Well, what did you expect, I was just going to stay here and sponge off of you? I gotta work for a living, and we've gotta go where the work is.

Lily: No, there's no way. There's no way in hell that I'm leaving here. My family is here, my children are here, my whole life is here in this town. No.

Keith: Okay, all right, all right, Lily. Lily, come on, just relax, okay? You know what? The company, they're going to expand. They'll go regional, and then I'll come back here and I'll work here.

Lily: No, no.

Keith: Yeah, come on, it won't be that long.

Lily: It's not going to happen. Absolutely not.

Keith: Now, I've been playing by your rules here. Come on, you're not even meeting me halfway here. You're not with me at all.

Lily: I live here. I agreed I'd stay here.

Keith: Right, here. So you can sneak around, sneak off to the barn with your ex-husband.

Lily: He's not my ex-husband. Not yet.

Keith: That's right, 'cause he won't give you a divorce. Lily, come on. Do you think that you're in love with him again? I mean, do you really?

Lily: I never stopped loving Holden.

Keith: Is it because it's exciting, sneaking around and all that stuff? Have you forgotten about all the gaps? All the times that he's let you down.

Lily: No, that's not true.

Keith: Well, you know what, you're coming with me. You're coming with me. That's the only way that we have a chance.

Lily: You cannot order me to do something.

Keith: Lily, wait a minute now, come on now. You made me a promise and the only way to keep that promise is to come with me.

Jennifer: I was an idiot to make you leave.

Dusty: Yes, you were.

Jennifer: I regretted it every day, every -- the very next minute. But I thought you were happy.

Dusty: I wasnít.

Jennifer: I'm sorry.

Dusty: No, I'm sorry. If it weren't for me, I think you would've had Johnny --

Jennifer: No more apologies. If you weren't here, I wouldn't feel this.

Dusty: Feel what?

Jennifer: Whole. Happy. In love.

Dusty: Jenny -- [Baby fusses] Go ahead.

Jennifer: Don't move.

Dusty: I'm not going anywhere.

Susan: Emily, do you know where you are?

Emily: I'm on the bed.

Susan: You're at Memorial.

Emily: I don't need -- I don't need a hospital.

Susan: Okay, okay. But you came to see me.

Emily: Yeah, I did. I came to see you.

Susan: Because you knew what to do. That's what you meant, right? When you said you knew what to do? Because Paul is gone.

[Emily sobs]

Emily: Oh, God.

Susan: Emily. [Beeper beeps] Emily.

Emily: You have to go. No, it's okay.

Susan: No, just for a minute. Just for a minute. I'm going to get somebody to cover for me, and then I'll be right back, okay? You stay here.

Emily: I will.

Susan: All right, don't -- don't move, okay? You promise?

Emily: There's nowhere to go.

Meg: You're bleeding out, Paul. [Paul screams] You need more than I can give you.

Paul: No. No hospitals.

Meg: At least a doctor. Or an EMT.

Paul: No. No.

Meg: Look, your pulse is thready. And your breathing is labored.

Paul: I just need to catch my breath.

Meg: I'm calling a doctor.

Paul: No, donít.

Meg: What, you expect me to leave you laying out here? Look, at least there's a clear road over there, okay? I'll take you out there.

Paul: Meg, there's a cabin.

Meg: What?

Paul: On the other side of those tress. There.

Meg: How'd you see that?

Paul: On the way down.

Meg: Oh, my God, Paul, how far did you fall?

Paul: That's a loaded question.

[Paul chuckles]

Meg: You think this is funny?

Paul: No.

Meg: You want to die, don't you? Great. That's reason enough to save your miserable hide. Come on, come on. Let's get up. Come on. Come on.

[Emily remembering]

Paul: Emily, there isn't anything I can say or do now that'll make this any better. [Gunshot] Oh, God!

[Emily screaming]

Susan: Here, baby. Chamomile tea.

Emily: Thank you.

Susan: That'll warm you up.

Emily: Thank you.

Susan: What is that?

Emily: Hmm?

Susan: There on your sleeve. Emily, that's blood.

Emily: Yeah.

Susan: How did it get there?

Emily: I fell.

Susan: Are you hurt? Do you have an injuries?

Emily: What?

Susan: Did something else happen, Emily? Did Paul -- did he -- did he hurt you?

Emily: No. No. He would never, never hurt me.

Susan: Okay.

Emily: How can you even think that?

Susan: Okay. Just tell me, what can I do for you?

Emily: Just stop asking questions.

Susan: Just one more. Will you come live here? It's been so quiet since your sister left, and I would love to have you. Come home, baby.

Emily: I don't deserve to come home.

Susan: Of course you do.

Emily: No, I donít.

Susan: Why?

Emily: Not after what I did.

Susan: Emily, you avoided the worst case scenario. Thanks to Hal, you are not going to jail. And you are not married to Paul. You're free, honey.

Emily: Free?

Susan: Oh, I know, now it looks like the end of the world, but you're in a really good place. You can start over.

Emily: Free? Start over?

Susan: I'm serious.

Emily: Free? Free, Mother? I'm never going to be -- don't touch me! I'm never going to be free!

Susan: Emily, okay, okay.

Emily: Free of what? I'm never going to be free!

Susan: Okay, just take it easy.

Emily: Oh God! Take it away!

Susan: It'll be all right.

Emily: Get it away!

Susan: Come on, we'll talk about this, come on.

Meg: Okay, once that's going, you'll warm up. You know, you're pretty lucky that bullet went clear through. It's a good thing your hunter used a small caliber handgun. And you're also lucky that he missed the major arteries.

Paul: Good news.

Meg: You want the bad news?

Paul: No, thank you.

Meg: It must've hit a vessel, because you've lost a lot of blood. You probably need a transfusion, Paul. At least. And you're at major risk for infection. You need professional help.

Paul: You're a professional.

Meg: And that's why I'm telling you that --

Paul: How do you treat a gunshot? You know, right? You've done that before?

Meg: Yes. Do you know the first thing we do when a gunshot victim comes into E.R.? We call the cops. Regulation, by law.

Paul: What's the second thing you do?

Meg: I'm going, Paul.

Paul: Please, don't go.

Meg: Why are you being so irrational about this?

Paul: Because of the first thing that you do --

Meg: You don't want the cops involved?

Paul: No, I don't want anyone involved.

Meg: Well, too bad.

Paul: You don't know what you're doing.

Meg: Yes, I do know what I'm doing. I'm going to the car and driving to a phone and calling 911.

Dusty: Is Johnny okay?

Jennifer: Yeah, he went back to sleep, no problem.

Dusty: What are you doing way over there?

Jennifer: Just trying to catch my breath. Stop my heart from racing.

Dusty: I love you, Jenny.

Jennifer: Oh, boy.

Dusty: I don't want you to think I missed it before when you said it -- I don't want you to feel alone, I love you, too.

Jennifer: Okay, that's not helping my heart rate very much.

Dusty: We've wasted a lot of time. What is it?

Jennifer: What if it's not real?

Dusty: What? Us? You're not really scared about that, are you?

Jennifer: Dusty, it's not just up to me now, I have a baby. Another human being that I am completely responsible for. I can't just dive in without looking.

Dusty: You don't think I'd be a good influence on Johnny, and his mother?

Jennifer: Dusty, up until a few hours ago you were with another woman. And you weren't just dating, you and Meg were living together. What you two had together, it looked real to me.

Dusty: Yeah, because it was.

Lily: I cannot leave my children. Please, don't ask me to do that. That was not part of the deal.

Keith: We'll just take the kids with us.

Lily: Holden will not allow it, no.

Keith: Well, you know what? Your lawyer can talk to his lawyer.

Lily: When? You're talking about this in the middle of the night, you want me to leave tomorrow.

Keith: You know what? We'll get down there, we'll get settled. We'll let the lawyers fight it out and then the kids can come down. They can start school at the winter session.

Lily: This is -- this is unreal.

Keith: I'll tell you what's unreal, is where you run around and I stay deaf, dumb and blind like some kind of a monkey. Now listen to me, okay? The only way this is going to work is that we've got to get you out of town.

Lily: This is too much. Too soon, no.

Keith: It's not negotiable, Lily. [Doorbell rings] What do you want, a cup of sugar?

Holden: I'm here to see my wife.

Keith: Good, come on in. She's got some big news. Go ahead, Lily, tell him.

Announcer: Coming up on "As the World Turns."

Holden: Send Keith away so that we can all come home.

Jennifer: I need to look Meg in the eye.

Dusty: I don't think that's a good idea.

Paul: You help me to get better, and I'll make you a millionaire.

Holden: What is it?

Keith: Go ahead, Lily, tell him. 'Cause I'm not going to let him stop us.

Holden: What the hell is going on?

Keith: Meanwhile, I'm going to go upstairs and pack my flight bag.

Holden: He's leaving?

Lily: Yes.

Holden: You sent him away?

Lily: No.

Holden: Lily, what's going on here?

Lily: We're leaving. Tomorrow.

Holden: We who? You and Keith?

Lily: Yes.

Holden: Where are you going?

Lily: California.

Holden: California? What is this, some sick idea of an early honeymoon?

Lily: Keith was offered a job in San Diego.

Holden: Is it permanent?

Lily: It's a great opportunity for him.

Holden: Lily, you need to stop this. Would you just listen to yourself?

Lily: I will not fight, I will not fight to have the children sent.

Holden: What?

Lily: Because I know how they feel. That's what he wanted, but I will not do it.

Holden: Lily, you're not making any sense here. It's like you're sleepwalking.

Lily: Don't judge me! I did what I had to do to keep Luke alive!

Holden: And now he's alive. But he needs his mother. Where are you?

Lily: I'm keeping him alive!

Holden: That's done, he's fine.

Lily: No, I made a promise. I made a promise on Lukeís life, and if I go back on my word, he's going to die! I know it!

Dusty: Whatever I had with Meg was very real, but probably not what you think.

Jennifer: You cared about her.

Dusty: Yeah. Jen, when you told me to go away -- I mean, you and I had already been someplace together, and it made me want more. More of the right things. The things you're supposed to want. Something solid, a woman who loves you -- kids, maybe, I said that. Maybe I just nodded when somebody else said it.

Jennifer: But you didn't mean it?

Dusty: Not before you. When you told me to go away, Meg was there.

Jennifer: Dusty, it was more than her just being there.

Dusty: Yeah, I cared about her.

Jennifer: Well, I would hope so.

Dusty: Yeah, of course, we've known each other our whole lives, we have a bond. She gets me.

Jennifer: Do you love Meg?

Dusty: She loved me. That's what mattered. That's what I needed. She was in a certain place, and I thought I could get there myself, in time. But it would've been a real climb, because I'm in love with you.

Susan: Here, take these. Emily, what happened with Paul -- what you did -- that wasn't you.

Emily: You don't know.

Susan: I know you, and you're not capable of -- what you did, Paul drove you to do those things.

Emily: It was me.

Susan: Honey, you were in love.

Emily: Not him. He had a hole in his heart, you know. From Rosanna, and then me. First her, and then me.

Susan: Is that what he said to you?

Emily: It's true. Everybody knew. I was second. It was always Rosanna. You knew -- everybody knew.

Susan: You never have to be second best.

Emily: No, not anymore.

Susan: No, you donít. Honey, it's over. You don't have to be second best. You're going to heal from this, you will. And I'll be here for you. And if you don't feel like talking to me, you have friends around who love you. Even Hal.

Emily: No, no, not Hal.

Susan: He is your friend.

Emily: No, Mom, I can't!

Susan: He understands.

Emily: No, Mom, I don't want Hal!

Susan: He's still your friend, sweetie.

Emily: No!

Susan: Okay, but -- but that's how he thinks about you, and you should know that. Just in case -- just in case you need someone to listen. Okay, someone who knows you. You all warmed up now? Good.

[Paul groans]

Meg: You can hear, I got the pump to working in the kitchen. I need you to drink all this up. Come on, you need the fluids. Are you feeling queasy?

Paul: Not at all.

Meg: You're ready for the dance floor?

Paul: Absolutely.

Meg: Yeah, right, save it. Don't you think I've seen every act in the world, people trying to get out of the hospital?

Paul: I can just stay here, you know. There's plenty of wood for the fire. You got a pump, this is plenty water, all I need is food.

Meg: Yeah, and stitches, and an x-ray or three or four, and antibiotics.

Paul: You could get all that stuff, all of it.

Meg: What do you mean, I could get that?

Paul: From the hospital. Or a store.

Meg: You expect me to forge prescriptions for you now?

Paul: I've got my wallet.

Meg: Paul, you know what? I have enough of my own problems, okay? Why don't you just get yourself to a hospital? Are you scared of the police?

Paul: Yeah, I might be in a little bit of trouble with the police.

Meg: They can only send you to prison for life once. Look at it this way, you'll rot in jail healthy.

Paul: I know you hate me.

Meg: Gee, when'd you catch on?

Paul: So why don't you just leave me here? You can forget you ever saw me.

Meg: Perfect solution.

Paul: No, please. Look, if you leave me here, my family can just think that I'm gone. Its better that way, it's better for everybody.

Meg: You know, you are such a prince to worry about their feelings now. Damn it. Here. Hold this, hold this hand. Give me the cup. Put your hand right there.

Paul: You're really good at this, see?

Meg: Okay, donít.

Paul: You could nurse me back to health.

Meg: For the sake of your family? So you could spare them the pain, right?

Paul: You can't just leave me here.

Meg: But I can call the police and then you can tell them your hunter in the middle of the night story.

Paul: I'll give you any amount that you want, in cash. Whatever you want. I swear, straight up. Just a deal, no bull. You help me to get better, and I'll make you a millionaire.

Paul: Well, well, well.

Meg: You know, you are the most arrogant man I have ever met.

Paul: This from the woman who lives with Dusty Donovan.

Meg: You're not worth it, for any amount.

Paul: Are you sure? Financial freedom. That means nothing to you? You'll never have to empty a bedpan at memorial ever again.

Meg: So I should empty yours?

[Paul groans]

Paul: Yes, for a little while. But there's a big, big payoff.

Meg: You're the devil, you know that?

Paul: You just help me for a little while and then you're free. All you have to do is keep your mouth shut.

Meg: Where have I heard that before?

Paul: You got away with it. I never turned on you, Meg.

Meg: Okay, look, just keep the blankets on you, okay? And don't walk, because I need the blood to clot around the wound.

Paul: Where are you going? Are you going to the police?

Meg: Look, just don't take any more pills, okay? Unless your fever spikes. Just save your breath.

Paul: Meg, please.

Dusty: Are you here?

Jennifer: Yes. I love you, too.

Dusty: You can trust me.

Jennifer: I do trust you, completely.

Dusty: What is it?

Jennifer: Meg. Where is she right now?

Dusty: I don't know.

Jennifer: Does she understand what's happening?

Dusty: Yeah, she knows it's over.

Jennifer: I wouldn't count on that.

Dusty: Oh, believe me, it's clear.

Jennifer: Dusty, Meg loves you, all right? She's not going to give up that easily. I know that I wouldnít.

Dusty: You wouldn't keep a woman away from her baby. Meg knows there's no going back, not with me.

Jennifer: I still can't wrap my brain around that.

Dusty: Well, then don't think about it.

Jennifer: I wish it were that easy. But this is something that I'm not going to be able to put out of my mind.

Dusty: What are you doing?

Jennifer: I'm going to go get dressed. I need to look Meg in the eye.

Dusty: I don't think that's a good idea.

Jennifer: Why, don't you think the woman should have to face me?

Dusty: Well, sure. I mean, if that's what you want.

Jennifer: Are you afraid of what she's going to say to me?

Dusty: No, I think there's just better ways we can spend our time.

Jennifer: So do I. But I have to do this. I need to get it out of the way so that we have nothing hanging over our heads.

Dusty: There's nothing hanging over my head. I'm free and clear.

Jennifer: And very soon, I will be, too.

[Doorbell rings]

Susan: I'll get it.

Hal: You said come.

Susan: I know, and I'm glad you did.

Hal: Against my better judgment. What are we doing out here?

Susan: Listen, something is wrong.

Hal: You said Paul dumped her at the altar, wherever that was. She'll live.

Susan: It's more than that. Well, it's not one of her stupid schemes that backfired. I've only seen her like this one time before. And that was after she was raped.

Hal: You think Paul --

Susan: No, she said she didn't see him. But she's very traumatized. There's something very, very wrong.

Hal: Susan, Emily wants me gone.

[Pager beeping]

Susan: Damn.

Hal: I can't keep running back, I canít.

Susan: I know. Listen, listen. Just one more time, okay, please? Please, I've got to go. And she needs you.

Hal: Susan --

Susan: She needs you. I wouldn't ask you do this if I weren't really scared for her.

Hal: This isn't fair.

Susan: No, it's not. But you have no choice, and neither do I.

Hal: Susan, I canít. I canít. Susan!

Holden: So that's it? You're afraid for Lukeís life?

Lily: That's enough, isn't it?

Holden: Lily, Luke is not going to die if you leave Keith. What makes you believe that?

Lily: I got a miracle, Holden. A miracle.

Holden: Okay.

Lily: No, you don't understand. I sat by her bed, I sat and I prayed, and I made every bargain I could with God.

Holden: Her bed?

Lily: I would've done anything. Anything. And they still couldn't find the poison.

Holden: Rose.

Lily: She deteriorated right in front of my eyes. And there was nothing I could do to help her. No medicines, no doctors, nothing. Nothing I could buy. There were no miracles. Rose died by inches right in front of me, and there was nothing I could do.

Holden: But Luke survived.

Lily: Yes. Yes, see? We got our miracle. God listened. This time. And I cannot mess it up. I can't go back on my promise.

Holden: Lily, you were tricked and twisted into it.

Lily: It doesn't matter. I still promised. And we got our son back. And our son was dying by inches, and we got our miracle.

Holden: So now you pay for it with your life?

Lily: You would do the same thing. And I'm not paying with my life. I'm not dying.

Holden: Lily, you don't owe this to rose. Or anyone. Rose died because we couldn't find a cure quick enough. Luke lived because we did.

Lily: Right, because I made it happen. Because I did what I was supposed to do for once.

Holden: No, no --

Lily: Yes.

Holden: It's out of your control.

Lily: No, I stopped it this time.

Holden: What if Keith hadn't been able to find a match? It could've happened. You could've promised and it still wouldn't have worked. It's not in your control. You can't make it happen either way. Nobody can.

Lily: I know. [Lily sighs] This doesn't make any sense. I know.

Holden: Well, then stop. It's your turn to be happy. You need to lose this. You need to get rid of the guilt. You need to do it for the girls. You need to do it for Luke. You need to do it for me. For yourself. Send Keith away so that we can all come home.

Holden: You have given Keith every chance. You can't make yourself love him. And you can't cut off your feelings for me or the kids.

Lily: Never.

Holden: So tell him.

Lily: No. As much as you say it, as much as I know, every time I think about it, my stomach seizes up. I can't breathe. I picture Luke getting hit by a car or his kidney failing.

Holden: That's Keith talking, playing on your worst fears.

Lily: I know. I do know.

Holden: But you want me to stop.

Lily: Thank you for knowing me better than anybody.

Holden: I better go. Call me if you need me.

Lily: I will. I'll call.

Holden: I'll be waiting.

[Emily is trying to burn her slip that has blood on it. Hal walks in.]

Hal: What are you doing, Emily?

Jennifer: Excuse me, I'm looking for Meg Snyder. She's a nurse. Do you know her?

Nurse #1: Mm-hmm.

Jennifer: Could you tell me when she's working next?

Nurse #1: I'll check the schedule.

Jennifer: I know that she had New Yearís off.

Nurse #1: Meg's next shift starts in a few hours. You want to leave a message?

Jennifer: No, thank you. Hours?

Announcer: On the next "As the World Turns" --

Jennifer: You turned my life inside out. And all so that you could spend a few months with a man who doesn't even love you. Was it worth it?

Hal: So please, tell me the truth. Do you know where Paul is?

Holden: I'm worried about what's going to happen to him if you marry somebody that you don't love and abandon your family.
