As The World Turns Transcript Wednesday 11/6/02

Hal: Alison's fine, Emily. Because I saw her with Lucy and Aaron. No, we'd tracked them as far as Franklin College, but then they spotted us, and they jumped in a car. No, no chase, I promise. I've got the local sheriff tracking 'em down.
Craig: Can I get a hand here? Never mind, I got it.
Hal: I said breakfast, Craig, not brunch.
Craig: Listen, you want to drink diet cola before 10:00 a.m., That's your prerogative. Sheriff call? No, because he's at the elks club, hanging antlers.
Hal: No, because he's been at the station all night monitoring the APB.
Craig: Which means that nobody in law enforcement has a clue. What we're going to do -- we're gonna take the road that Aaron took toward the interstate, and then we're gonna go south.
Hal: No, what we're gonna do is sit right here until I hear from the sheriff. That's what we're gonna do.
Lucy: Aaron, where are we?
Aaron: Ladies, we're standing on what is known to many as "holy ground." This is the famous OSU Stadium.
Aaron: Ohio State University. The Buckeyes. This is where they play football.
Lucy: I wonder what it must be like to run out onto this field at game time, and hearing the roar of a sold-out crowd.
Alison: Having thousands of people watching me shake my pom-poms. Makes you want to be a cheerleader.
Lucy: Actually, it kinda makes me want to own my own team.
Aaron: Right now, I wouldn't mind having a small fraction of the money you'd have to spend for that.
Lucy: How much do we have?
Aaron: Let's put it this way -- we can barely afford to pay attention. We gotta come up with a way to make some scratch, and fast.
Lucy: How? We don't know anyone in Ohio.
Alison: Not so fast, you guys. I think I have an idea.
Carly: How's he doing?
Jack: Well, it only took 14 hours. But he's quiet. Ah, my coffee -- and my wife. To wedded bliss.
Carly: I'm just grateful we actually got all the way from the vows to the "I pronounce you husband and wife" part.
Jack: Yes, and I promise you, Julia's not gonna ruin it.
Carly: She's gonna try, Jack, you know that.
Jack: That's why I'm glad we're getting this paternity test done so fast. Because it's not fair to him to keep him hanging. Yeah. And I -- I don't know -- I'm afraid to feel anything unless I really know for sure. Here you go.
Carly: And if he's yours?
Jack: "If he's yours," I get custody and --
[Baby crying] Oh, it's okay. -- Julia goes away. It's all right.
Carly: And if she won't?
Jack: If she won't -- look, what judge in the world is gonna give an innocent kid like this to a woman like that shh -- it's okay. It's okay. Thank you, by the way.
Carly: For what?
Jack: For taking me back, after I was such a horse's you-know-what the other night.
Carly: No, you know, I don't even want to talk about the other night, okay? I don't even want to think about it. You know, it's over. We both did -- said some things that we shouldn't have, and we got back on track, so --
Jack: Okay, all right. Fresh start.
Carly: I'm gonna get it.
Jack: All right. Hey, buddy.
Oh, hi. Oh. Hey, Jack, look what they did -- our wedding cake.
Molly: Yeah, I figured it would be bad luck if you didn't at least taste it.
Jack: Wedding cake for breakfast. I can deal with that. Hey, Mike. Come on in. Hey.
Rosanna: I know Carly cheated on Jack. What I need is proof.
Henry: You want proof? I've got your proof. The boys at the lab lifted that off of a champagne glass that was left behind at the scene of the crime -- so to speak.
Rosanna: And the fingerprint belongs to?
Henry: Craig Montgomery.
Henry: No, I thought --
Rosanna: Craig was out of town. I need to know who this print belongs to.
Henry: That could be a problem.
Ben: So why do you want to go up against Travers again?
Jessica: Because Paul Ryan is sitting in a jail cell accused of a murder he didn't commit. And Steinbeck had something to do with it. I know it.
Ben: And this is your responsibility because?
Jessica: Because -- it is. Because Steinbeck kidnapped and tortured three women on my watch. Because Paul was right about suspecting Travers. Because I was naive.
Ben: All I'm saying is -- take some time off. You just conceded the election. Let it go. I know that's easier said than done. You're like a thoroughbred that's hearing the starting bell -- and you're raring to go. But it's not your job anymore.
Jessica: I'm not talking about prosecuting the case.
Ben: What, defending it is any different? It's the same fight, the same cast of characters. Come on, do you really want to get involved in another Steinbeck-Travers mess? Or do you want to go to Tahiti with a dashing doctor? Come on. Think about it.
Paul: Ah. Mom.
Barbara: Paul, I know that you're angry with me, but I am still your mother, and I want to help you.
Paul: And remind me again why I should trust you?
Barbara: I saw your father last night.
Paul: Where? Did you call the Police?
Barbara: At Fairwinds. He was lurking in the gazebo. He's so predictable. I don't know why they haven't caught him by now. And he was there with a birthday cake.
Paul: Did you call the Police?
Paul: 'Cause you're working for him, aren't you?
Barbara: Oh, grow up, Paul. Life is not one thing or the other. Would I love to see your father behind bars? Yes. Is it likely that he would stay there? No. And then what? I will have alienated him and lost any chance to help you.
Paul: You're worrying about alienating him? He murdered Brandy Taylor!
Barbara: And let you take the blame for it. Yes, I know. Don't you see? What James gives, he can take away. We have to let him play out this sick game, and then he will let you go, Paul.
Paul: No, what we want is to put him on death row for once and for all.
Shanks: It's the coroner's report on the dead girl. The chief is gonna be making a statement to the press.
James: As will I. It has come to my attention that the Oakdale Police Department has issued all manner of warrants for my arrest. Well, gentlemen, here I am. Steinbeck. James Steinbeck. Thursday on morning edition ..we'll be entertained with sounds from the Ukraine.
Molly: Oh, come on, one more -- shove it in there.
Molly: All right!
Jack: Oh, great picture. Oh, my word.
Molly: It's falling out. Now one with Mike and the bride. Come on.
Jack: Yeah, come on.
Molly: Come on!
Mike: No, I tell you what -- we'll get a picture of the bride and her matron of honor.
Carly: Now, that's a really good idea.
Molly: All right.
Mike: Get in, get in, get in.
Carly: Come here, cuz. Make it nice, okay? Say -- say "cheese"!
Molly: And they all lived happily ever after.
Jack: Oh, amen.
Molly: So -- dare I ask? Where's Vampira?
Jack: Oh, Julia? She's locked up in the psych ward, under observation.
Molly: Ah, home sweet home.
Mike: And the baby?
Jack: You saw him. He's cute. That's about all we know.
Molly: Hey, you know what? I should go right now and get you a porta-crib. Because that little carrier's not gonna hold him for long.
Carly: You know, I've got a -- there's a cradle upstairs in the attic.
Jack: Let me go get it. Come on.
Carly: No, don't! Don't answer that!
Jack: No, it's --
Carly: Honeymoon or no honeymoon, you're on vacation.
Jack: It's gonna wake the baby. It might wake -- hey, yeah.
Shanks: Jack, I don't know how to tell you this, but you gotta come in.
Jack: Yeah, my wife just reminded me -- I'm on vacation.
Shanks: Steinbeck just walked in.
Jack: What?! Hold him!
Shanks: I am. But the lieutenant's out of town. Detective Hughes is out. Paul Ryan is downstairs, charged with murder.
Shanks: Yeah, a woman was shot. He fired the gun. Victim by the name of Brandy Taylor.
Jack: I'm on my way. Get cuffs on Steinbeck and read him his rights.
Jack: By the book, Hagwood. No force, no mistakes. You got that? I'll call you from my car. They just arrested Steinbeck. I've gotta get down to the station.
Carly: Be careful, okay?
Jack: No, no, I'm gonna be fine. I am. I'm more concerned about Carly being alone.
Mike: We'll take care of her.
Jack: Good. Hey, this is what we wanted. Steinbeck out of circulation, right?
Carly: I guess. I was kinda happy knowing he was in Singapore.
Jack: Yeah. It's gonna be okay.
Molly: And you thought married life was gonna be dull.
Mike: Tell you what -- I will go up and grab that crib, all right?
Molly: Carly, Steinbeck can't hurt you anymore.
Carly: So they say.
Molly: I wish you were the crying type.
Carly: Why? So I could wake the baby?
Molly: So? What's so bad about that? Mike would just have to come and rock the little guy back to sleep. Don't you think Mike would make a great daddy?
Carly: Oh, Molly.
Rosanna: I am not interested in your problems, Mr. Coleman. I paid you a great deal of money to find out the name of the man that Carly slept with the night before her wedding.
Henry: I can do that. But it's gonna cost you.
Ben: You need to take at least a month off.
[Cell phone rings] You see what I'm saying?
Jessica: It's Toby, my former assistant at the D.A.'s office.
Ben: Yeah, pulling you right back in.
Jessica: Or warning me. Yeah, Toby. Thanks for the heads up. Steinbeck just turned himself in. Marshall is on his way down to the Police station now. He swore to me he would not set him free.
Ben: Well, you want to see if he's gonna keep his word, don't you? Come on. I'll walk you to your car.
Henry: You hired me to find out if Craig Montgomery was -- "hiding the salami" with your sister. We found out that he wasn't. So case closed. Now, as for Mr. Fingerprints -- that's -- that's a whole new case. Now, as a long-term client, I'm sure -- I'd be happy to give you a break on the rates.
Rosanna: I'd sooner break your neck.
Henry: All right. I'll -- I'll get that name for you on the house.
Rosanna: Thank you, Henry.
Lucy: Where are we going?
Aaron: Are you gonna let us in on your money-raising scheme, or are we gonna have to guess?
Alison: Well, we may not know anyone here, but people might know us. We're famous!
Lucy: I think you mean notorious.
Alison: Well, if we're notorious, then we might as well cash in on it. It is the American way. We'll take our case to the people.
Aaron: What are you talking about?
Alison: Um -- excuse me? Buckeyes, just a moment of your time, please? Just a moment of your time! Feast your eyes!
Lucy: Alison --
Aaron: What do you think you're doing?! Are you trying to get us arrested?!
Alison: Recognize us? You may have noticed us, our mug shots, on your post office wall or on your friendly news stations? That's right. We're the Oakdale three! Free the Oakdale three! Free the Oakdale three! Free the Oakdale three!
[Crowd murmuring and chanting]
Lucy: Alison, stop. What are you doing?
Alison: Shaking my pom-poms in front of thousands of fans! Free the Oakdale three!
Troy: Hey, Snyder! Did you do it, dude?
Aaron: Do what?
Ron: Were you the fire starter?
Aaron: I didn't do anything!
Alison: Except save the lives of two adorable, innocent kids. I mean, Aaron Snyder was railroaded -- a victim of Police brutality! Free the Oakdale three!
Aaron: We have got to get out of here!
Alison: Well, not when I've got them in the palm of my hands!
Lucy: Have you forgotten that the Police are chasing us? One of these people could turn us in!
Alison: Turn us in? These are the fine students of Ohio State!
Alison: And they're sick and tired of being force-fed someone else's third-hand version of the truth!
[Crowd murmurs in agreement]
Alison: See? We need the money, right? Just leave it up to me.
Kevin: Good evening.
Alison: Since we're being chased down by the man and everything, our credit cards are useless. So any change you guys can spare for our quest for freedom, we'd really appreciate it. Give till it hurts, friends. Use your mama's money to start our own revolution! Let the innocent stay free!
Lucy: Alison, this is wrong. We're begging for change!
Aaron: She's right. We can't do this.
Alison: Well, what else are we supposed to do?
Aaron: Listen up, folks. I'm sorry about my friend --
Alison: Come up with a better idea.
Lucy: What about a charity auction?
Alison: Now you're thinking, princess. Okay, Buckeyes. I know it gets cold at night here in Columbus, so who wouldn't die for this hot new leather jacket? High-quality leather owned by a high-quality girl. Almost new, barely worn -- and a souvenir from our historic and heroic jailbreak.
Aaron: She needs her jacket, Alison!
Lucy: No, I don't. I've got you to keep me warm.
Ron: I'll give you $15.
Aaron: $15? Are you crazy?! That thing's worth at least a couple hundred.
Alison: Aaron. It's an auction!
Aaron: $15? $25.
Student: I got $25 over here.
Aaron: $25. It's highway robbery, but it's a start. $25. Let's push this to $35. Who wants --
Student: I got $35.
Aaron: $35 for years of comfort, warmth and style. $35. Let's bump this up to $50! $50 for a nifty leather coat, worn by the most beautiful girl in Oakdale. Folks, we have to eat, here. Can I hear $50 -- sir, you. You're going to let your girlfriend walk around campus all winter long with no leather coat, when for $50 she can have it? $50.
[Applause] $50, the leather coat goes to the Buckeye genius with the beautiful girlfriend.
Lucy: I hope you like it. I did.
Indigo: Thanks, it's gorgeous! Good luck to you guys!
Ron: You better hold onto that jacket. It'll be worth a whole lot more when they all wind up in jail.
Alison: Oh, forget it. There's one of those guys on every campus. You guys, we did it! We're on the plus side again!
Aaron: Never made so much money so fast.
Alison: Well, let's go. I hear a cheeseburger and fries calling my name! I'm coming, babies! I'm coming!
Hal: So no other charges on Lucy's card since the gas station?
[Cell phone rings] No, don't have them shut down the card. Just let me know if there are any other charges.
Craig: Yes? Detective who? Do you mind?
Hal: This is Lieutenant Munson. Who am I speaking to, please? Yes, deputy. The car was spotted but not stopped? Yes. Okay, fine. And you can reach me at this number. The car was spotted on I-70, headed for Columbus.
Craig: Ohio State. That's where they're going.
Hal: So that's where we go.
James: Jack, Jack. It has been much too long.
Jack: James Steinbeck. You're under arrest for the crimes against Rose D'Angelo, Emily Stewart and Carly Tenney.
James: But isn't it Carly Snyder now? I mean, did the bride wear white?
Jack: You're charged with aggravated kidnapping, unlawful restraint, aggravated assault and reckless endangerment.
James: Is that all? Aren't you gonna throw in the charge of murdering the girl that Paul killed?
Jack: First things first. You're not talking your way out of this one, James. We have a material witness.
James: Oh, you mean my darling Barbara? I don't think she's gonna be very helpful.
Jack: Take Mr. Steinbeck downstairs.
James: Easy. See you soon, Jack.
Marshall: If that's Steinbeck's file you've got there, it's useless. I've just read it. You've got nothing, Jack. It's all hearsay.
Paul: I met Brandy at the bar. She ordered me a drink. I shouldn't have touched it, but I did. It was drugged. She told me to go upstairs and -- to my room, and James would contact me. I went up there, and he was waiting. And the drug started taking effect. I was dizzy -- but I saw him. I talked to him. Then I shot him. He fell. He was wearing a costume, some sort of cape that -- then I passed out. And when the Police got there, I -- they rolled him over, and it was Brandy.
Barbara: You played right into his hands. He knew that I would want to help you. And that's his ace in the hole to get me do whatever he wants.
Paul: You know what? Let him. Let him brag. Let him boast. And then we'll go to the Police, and you can testify against him.
Barbara: He will kill me before he'll let me testify. Don't you see? We can't stop him, Paul! I've tried. Believe me, I have tried.
James: Oh, well, well, if it isn't the near and the dear. Officer, thank you so much. I mean, this is above and beyond the call. Adjoining cells!
Paul: Did you nail him for Brandy's murder?
Shanks: He's in for kidnapping Rose and her friends.
James: Paul, you killed that girl. You know that.
Paul: You go to hell.
James: See, permissive parenting, Barbara? I knew that was going to be the ruin of our son. But I've always admitted that, haven't I, darling?
Barbara: I despise you for this, James.
James: Oh, now, now, now. Please. I'm not feeling the love here. You two are going to have to do a lot better than that.
Carly: First Julia, now Steinbeck. Can't get a break. And, you know, that little baby up there, he raises some pretty tough questions, Mol. Do I really want to be raising Julia's child, having her butting into our lives for the next 20 years?
Molly: Carly, he's Jack's baby, too.
Carly: Maybe. Jack's doing that DNA test.
Molly: Then you'll know. But I'll tell you what we're gonna do right now. You are gonna sit there and relax. And I'm gonna go see Gloria at the Lakeview Baby Boutique. We bonded over the twins, so she's gonna help me figure out what you need for the next couple weeks to keep things going, okay? And you, Mike, are gonna stay here with Carly.
Mike: You know what? I can go get whatever.
Molly: Baby stuff? No, I don't think so. You stay here and protect Carly from "whatever." And I'll be back.
Carly: As if we don't have enough "whatever" of our own. Do you really think we have a prayer in there they're not gonna find out?
Mike: The only way that Jack and Molly are gonna find out is if we tell them. Which is an option.
Carly: You can't be serious.
Mike: Well -- will they be angry? Yes. Will they forgive us? Probably. I mean, think about it. Jack walked out on you. I walked out on Molly. I mean, all bets were off. Plus, we'd drank a river of champagne --
Carly: We already agreed that that is not an excuse!
Mike: We're old friends.
Carly: Which is not a point in our favor, either. I mean, if we can't be trusted to --
Mike: We can --
Carly: To leave well enough alone --
Mike: We can be trusted. You're married. And I'm back with Molly.
Carly: And you think that they are going to accept that? It's bad enough for Jack. But Molly? She's got two of us breaking her heart.
Mike: Well, then we don't tell them. All right, we just -- we keep our mouths shut, and we move on.
Carly: And Rosanna?
Mike: I'll take care of Rosanna.
Carly: You didn't see her at the wedding, Mike. She wants to ruin my life. And if she can take you down with me, all the better.
Molly: Hi. I need four burger specials to go, please?
Carter: You bet.
Molly: Thanks, Carter.
Carter: No problem.
Rosanna: Aunt Molly. Shopping for the new baby?
Molly: Hello, Rosanna.
Rosanna: I'm sure Parker will just love having a new little baby brother. But it must be kind of tough on the newlyweds, don't you think? Between that and the other situation, I really hope the marriage survives.
Molly: And how does this work? I ask you about the "other situation," and then you give me a load of bull about Carly?
Rosanna: Come on, Molly. You don't have to pretend with me. We both know Carly spent the night before her wedding at her Monte Carlo office -- with a man who wasn't Jack.
Jack: Don't tell me we can't get Steinbeck when you add Barbara Ryan's testimony to everything we've gathered.
Marshall: Barbara Ryan will never testify.
Jack: Then subpoena her. Treat her like a hostile witness.
Marshall: I wish I could. As I'm sure you're aware, though, a wife can't be forced to testify against her husband.
Jack: Barbara Ryan divorced James a long time ago.
Marshall: And in April of this year, she remarried him.
Jack: I'll believe she remarried James when I see a license, and she swears to it under oath.
Marshall: You're free to discuss your doubts with Mrs. Steinbeck if you choose. I have none. She won't testify. And without her, there's no case.
Jack: Okay. All right. Even without her direct testimony, you still have everything she swore to when you were defending her that James was responsible.
Jack: What? What are you saying?
Marshall: I'm saying that as District Attorney, I can't okay prosecution, Jack.
Jack: All right. Okay. Fine. Then the state's Attorney General will. We still have Emily Stewart's testimony and Rose D'Angelo's.
Marshall: Sedation and diminished capacity make both women unreliable witnesses. Which leaves me no choice. I'm dropping all charges against Mr. Steinbeck.
Jack: He kidnapped my wife, Travers. He tortured her.
Marshall: Which makes you less than objective, detective. The case is closed. It's over.
Jessica: Might I have a word, Mr. Travers?
Marshall: Of course. Look, Jessica, there was nothing else I could do.
Jessica: You lied to me. You betrayed me. You betrayed the D.A.'s office. And you betrayed the people of this city.
Marshall: Right, right, and right again. Do you think I like the position I've put myself in?
Jessica: Which is?
Marshall: It's better you not know.
Jessica: Better for who?
Marshall: For you. Look, Steinbeck has -- leverage, all right? Can we just put it at that? It's personal. And I'm not able to extricate myself quite yet. Don't act like you've never been under any pressure and never been forced to make sacrifices, compromises in order to survive.
Jessica: I made one mistake -- you. But I've never compromised my principles. I conceded the election because I did not deserve to remain in the office.
Marshall: Well, maybe I should have dealt with my situation a little bit better. But here we are. I'm trapped.
Jessica: Well, I'm not.
Marshall: Look --
[Marshall sighs] Look, you were never supposed to have anything to do with this. All right. I wasn't supposed to get involved with you -- to fall in love with you. But I did. But everything I felt, every moment I shared with you, was true.
Alison: I don't know what they do to the fries here at OSU, but I think I'm in heaven!
Aaron: Warm enough?
Alison: If we play our cards right, I don't think we're gonna have to sell any more outerwear for at least a couple of days.
Aaron: That charity auction thing was pure inspiration. You really came through.
Lucy: Get used to it.
Alison: Get used to freezing.
Sandy: Hey, you guys. No, it's cool. I'm not a narc or anything. My name is Sandy.
Lucy: Oh, you were at our little charity auction thing.
Alison: Hey, auction for freedom!
Sandy: I read about your case and everything. And you must really be in love for you to break him out of jail and everything.
Alison: Hey, I'm the one who planned the great escape.
Sandy: And you're giving up everything to go on the run with the man you love? That's too romantic. You should take the long walk, to make sure that your love lasts forever.
Aaron: What's the long walk?
Sandy: Come with me. I'll show you.
Alison: Oh, yeah! Sure! Forget all about me! I'm only the one who saved our butts, again! You guys! You guys! Wait up!
Aaron: So this "long walk"? It's a big tradition around here, huh?
Sandy: This is it. See how it crosses the oval?
Sandy: Well, legend says that when you walk the complete length of the long walk hand-in-hand with the one you love, you'll stay in love and together forever.
Alison: Yeah, cute story. But we don't have time for this right now.
Lucy: Oh, come on, Alison. Live a little.
Alison: You're telling me to live a little? Give me a break.
Aaron: Look, all we're saying --
Alison: Look, I'd like to do my living outside of prison, thank you very much. I've got a penny. We can find a wishing well on the way to someplace else. But we've got to put some miles between us and the cops and your dad. A lot of highway to cover, people!
Sandy: Yeah, but maybe this will bring you luck or something. You only live once, right?
Aaron: Lucy, will you join me on a long walk?
Lucy: I'd love to.
Sandy: Aren't they just the cutest couple?
Alison: If there's a lamer tradition, I'd like to hear it. What a joke.
Sandy: That's what everyone says, till it happens to them.
Sandy: Have you ever been in love like that?
Alison: Why bother? It's just a waste of time.
Molly: I'm going to say this once, Rosanna. If I catch you running around spreading vicious lies about my cousin, we're gonna have a problem.
Rosanna: If only they were lies, Molly. Do you think that I enjoy having a tramp for a sister? I know that there's nothing I can do about my sister's appetites. And then there's Jack, the poor man -- well, all I can say is that he knew what he was getting into. But as for this new paramour of hers, that's another story. Do you think it's fair for Carly to ruin his life? As well as the lives of all the innocent people who are close to him -- and you know exactly who I am talking about.
Molly: No, I don't. And neither do you. And if you run around with these rumors all over town, Rosanna --
Rosanna: Look Molly, can you at least admit that keeping this secret was a mistake? Don't forget that I was the one who asked you to put your cards on the table. And now that you did -- well, look what happened. You and Mike are closer than ever.
Molly: Which is why you've moved on to Jack and Carly. And that won't work, either. Because they are happily married now. And that's for keeps.
Rosanna: Yeah, right. Well, we'll see, won't we? Let's have this conversation another time. Perhaps after Jack finds out the name of Carly's latest one-night stand. Good luck with the little bundle.
Mike: You're letting Rosanna get to you. Okay, even if she knows that you spent the night at the office, she's not gonna know we were together. And if she guesses, she's got no proof. Think about it. Jack and Molly know that Rosanna's out to get you. They're not going to believe a word that she says.
Carly: Why can't she just leave me alone!
Mike: Because we hurt her, that's why.
Carly: She hurt me. She pushed me off a boat. She killed our child.
Mike: It was an accident.
Carly: Well, she got what she wanted, right? Nora died. We didn't have a chance. And still -- still it isn't enough for her. You know, Parker never used this much. I guess it was too soon. I kept picturing her, what she would have looked like, laying here with a little pink blanket. And now I'm supposed to contaminate it with -- I'm sorry. I'm sorry. It's just an innocent little baby.
Mike: And if it's Jack's, you'll find a place in your heart for him.
Carly: Are you sure?
Mike: You have the softest heart in town. All right? You'll make room. It's just gonna take time. Jack will understand.
James: Darling, have you told our son the happy news? No? Well, you see, Paul, your mother has granted me the great honor of becoming Mrs. James Steinbeck once again.
Paul: Tell me he's lying.
Barbara: We were in Singapore. I had nothing. I had no money, no passport, no visa. He could have had me thrown in jail. I had to save myself.
James: And save yourself the agony of testifying against your most favorite husband.
Paul: Nothing says that you can't still testify. You're a material witness. Mom! Do not let him get away with this!
Barbara: He won't, Paul. I will help you.
Paul: No, get out of here. Get out of here! Get the hell out of here!
James: Such hostility. Where -- where does it come from, Barbara? Huh?
Barbara: I hate you, James.
Jack: Let's go.
Paul: What's going on?
James: He's a bit slow today. I'm a free man, son.
Jack: My hands are tied, Paul.
James: Your missus must love that. I am very fond of you, Paul. That Travers, he's some D.A., isn't he, Jack?
Jessica: Brandy Taylor was part of your plan, wasn't she?
Marshall: I used her, yes, to keep tabs on Paul Ryan. She was to meet him, tell him to go to his room and wait on a message from his father. That's all I know. How she wound up dead --
Jessica: Well, I think that's pretty obvious, don't you?
Marshall: I wasn't there. I didn't see anything. It was out of my control.
Jessica: Was Steinbeck controlling it? He's obviously controlling you. What does he have on you, Marshall? You never went to law school? You have three wives? What?
Marshall: Look, all I can say is that when Steinbeck leaves town, my debt is paid.
Jessica: Oh, is that how blackmail works? The person holding all the cards just goes away?
Marshall: Look, when this is over -- and believe me, it will end -- I'm going to come to you and make you forget all this. We're going to start over. I love you, Jessica.
Jessica: That's for even having that thought!
James: Give your bride my best.
Jack: Get him outta here!
James: Love the tape.
Hal: They said we'd be able to find our witness at the bookstore.
Clerk: You guys must be the cops.
Hal: What gave us away?
Clerk: You have to ask? Take a look around.
Craig: Listen, we heard a report that you'd seen this girl. She's about 5'6" --
Clerk: Yeah, that's the one I saw.
Hal: Hold on. What was she wearing?
Clerk: Beats me. All I remember is like a -- blue leather jacket. Expensive-looking. She went in that store over there just a few minutes ago.
Hal: And the guy she was traveling with?
Clerk: They're stuck like glue.
Craig: Well, let's go. And when I --
Hal: Hold it, Craig! Hold it. We'll grab them when they come out.
Craig: Hal, we cannot let them slip between our fingers again.
Hal: We won't.
Clerk: I see them! There she is! That's the girl!
Craig: Lucy? Lucy! Lucy! Lucy!
Jack: James Steinbeck's release papers. You file them. You're obviously in his back pocket.
Marshall: Look, detective --
Jack: You know what? You're a disgrace! You conned your way into office. You're not fit to hold Jessica Griffin's coat. And here you are, you're the D.A. Enjoy it while it lasts, Travers 'cause you're going down.
Marshall: You know, it wasn't in my plan to fire anybody my first week in office. But your time will come, detective.
Jack: I watched you at Hal's wedding, when Barbara was pulling Will away. You felt sorry for that kid. And I thought, "gee, this guy does have a conscience." My mistake.
Marshall: You've been released. I suggest you make yourself scarce.
James: Not until we've concluded our business.
Marshall: Oh, we're done.
James: No, no, no. Not quite yet. Listen, Paul is out of control. He tried to shoot me. And if were not careful, he'll derail my relationship with Barbara.
Marshall: Look, your wife is none of my business anymore.
James: You will prosecute my son to the full extent of the law. Once he's convicted, then we're through.
Marshall: Look, I can't guarantee --
James: Marshall, Marshall, listen. I have total faith in your ability. But if for some unforeseen reason Paul escapes justice, you won't.
Paul: Jessica --
[Paul sighs] Sorry, I blew it.
Jessica: It's not your fault.
Paul: But I swear to you, I had nothing to do with Brandy's murder. My father framed me. He's got the tape.
Jessica: Yeah. I know. Have you made a statement to the police?
Paul: No. I talked to Travers last night. Tom was there, but the police, no police.
Jessica: Good. Is Tom representing you?
Paul: No, he can't, not with Margo still recovering. But he's going to find me someone.
Jessica: Let me represent you, Paul. I can't let Travers and Steinbeck get away with this. Let me fight for you and run Marshall Travers out of town.
Carly: They just let him go? Just like that? No hearing? Nothing?
Jack: He's back on the street. So keep the doors locked and don't go anywhere without Mike.
Carly: Yeah. Yeah, okay.
Jack: I mean it, Carly. With Steinbeck on the loose, nobody's safe. How's the baby?
Carly: Sleeping. It's just our luck -- a baby who sleeps all day and howls all night.
Jack: I'm so sorry to put you through this.
Carly: It's okay. Just do what you gotta do and get home. I miss my husband.
Jack: I miss my wife.
Carly: I don't know if I can do this. If Rosanna talks to Jack --
Mike: I'll talk -- I'll take care of Rosanna, all right?
Carly: All she has to do is make him suspicious. And then it starts -- the lying and the guilt.
Mike: Then tell him.
Carly: I can't.
Mike: All right. Then you're gonna have to find a way to deal with this.
Molly: Hey, did you miss me?
Mike: Please tell me those are some Lakeview burgers.
Molly: Four of them, actually. And enough baby stuff to start our own nursery. I ran into Rosanna at the Lakeview. And you are not going to believe this. She's spreading a rumor about what happened in your office the night before your wedding.
Carly: What did she say?
Molly: You might want to sit down.
