Cara: Tad! Tad, did you check the weather report on Martha's Vineyard? Because -- is it chilly at night? I don't know what to bring. Come up here, please. I've got a lot of options. I got some dresses. I got some, you know --
Tad: You bellowed, Muffin?
Cara: I --
Tad: I don't believe we've met. Thaddeus Martin of the Mayflower Martins. Perhaps you've heard of us.
Tad: Vaguely? I'm surprised. See, Granddaddy made a whole pile of money in caviar tins and seaweed futures, and I'm talking real cash. Poor sucker died gagging on it. Why are you looking at me like we haven't met before?
Cara: Are you, uh -- you're gonna bring that?
Tad: Yeah. I'm bringing it. Why?
Cara: Well -- it's a touch much.
Tad: A touch much? Au contraire. I beg to differ. Not where we're going, ok, because it so happens, the house we're staying at is right next to a country club. You know what that means. You and me are gonna be rubbing elbows all weekend long with people named Winston and Buffy and Muffy, you know, and everybody knows tennis is their game.
Cara: I didn't know you played.
Tad: Ho ho ho! You're serious. Oh, no, no, no, honey. No. Nobody plays. Nobody plays. See, we just sit around and watch people, other people, play, see, because if we actually played, it would entail really, really nasty things like sweating and running. We just drink bloodies and look fantastic, and, God knows, I look fantastic. What do you think?
Cara: I think I'm looking forward to this trip.
Tad: Not half as much as I am.
Marissa: What were you trying to do, kill yourself?
J.R.: That would make it easier for you, wouldn't it?
Marissa: You had no business driving in your condition.
J.R.: You should've taken my keys away from me.
Bianca: You were drunk, J.R. You could've hurt somebody in my car.
J.R.: But I didn't. I hit a tree. So what, you gonna have me arrested?
Marissa: Maybe I should have you locked up.
J.R.: Oh, that'd be great. Take away my freedom. You've already taken everything else from me.
Marissa: It would give you a chance to sober up.
J.R.: Don't act like you give a damn, not after poisoning my own son against me.
Marissa: A.J. doesn't want to talk to you, because he's sacred of you, the way you get when you've been drinking.
J.R.: I'm his father, damn it.
Marissa: Yes, and he misses his father, not this nasty, stumbling drunk that he doesn't even recognize. This is all on you, J.R., just you.
Jesse: Hayward was in such bad shape in the hospital. He had help getting out of there.
Brot: That's Hayward. It's possible, but there's nothing illegal about him leaving the hospital, Chief.
Jesse: I told her this would happen. I knew he was gonna pull this. I told her, man! Oh, I'm sorry. It's just, Angela is this amazing woman. She has lost so much already. I mean, after losing her sight, she was so strong, so brave. She took it like a champ. She was handling it until this idiot Hayward comes along and tells her that he can help her see again. She was so excited about seeing Lucy's face for the first time.
Brot: Angie is a strong woman, Chief. She'll be able to deal with whatever happens.
Jesse: Even the fact that she loves this little baby that is not ours, that we lost our baby that she carried for 9 months? Lucy's mother is living in the same house with us now. It's only a matter of time before she figures out that this is the baby that she gave up. It's all about to just come crashing down all around us, and I can't bear to think what that's gonna do to Angela when it does.
Maya: Let go. You're hurting my arm.
Mookie: I'm not letting you walk away. I said I would stop. I mean it this time.
Maya: You said that before, and then you just do it over and over again. I see it in your eyes right now. You want to slap me, don't you?
Angie: Take your hands off of her and get out of my house. If you don't let her go and leave this instant, I'll have you arrested.
Mookie: You don't understand.
Angie: No. I understand that men who hit women are worthless cowards. Now get out of here before I call my husband and have you locked up. He's not letting you go, is he, Maya? You know what? I'm not going to tell you again.
Mookie: You got me all wrong, Doc.
Angie: No. You're wrong. I don't have you wrong. I heard what you said, Mookie. I know what's been going on.
Mookie: Yeah? Well, people say a lot of things when they get into it, but it's cool. I'll go.
Mookie: I didn't mean to cause you any trouble. I love you. You know that.
Angie: Get out. Get out!
Maya: I am so sorry.
Angie: Never mind that. How are you? Did he hurt you?
Maya: No, no. Mookie was just upset, ok? I guess I said some things that I shouldn't have said. It was my fault.
Angie: You have to stop thinking like that.
Maya: But it was.
Angie: No, Maya. There is no excuse. Nothing you could've said or done justifies him hitting you.
Maya: You just don't understand, ok? He wasn't always like this. You just don't know the whole story. That's all.
Angie: Then tell me.
Colby: Hey, hi. What's going on?
Asher: I'm moving out.
Colby: You're moving out. You're moving out? Why? Is it because of me?
Asher: No, Colby.
Colby: I know that I've been gone a lot lately and then when I come back, I'm all over you, and -- I don't know -- maybe you think that you need your space.
Asher: No. It has nothing to do with you, ok? It's me and this big mess that I've been creating of my life.
Colby: What mess?
Asher: I've been really depending on these pain pills, for starters.
Colby: Oh. So you think that maybe you're addicted?
Asher: Maybe. I don't know. I just know that I can't figure it out here, you know, not anymore.
Colby: Ok. All right. So where are you gonna go?
Asher: Someplace where I can clear my head before I throw the rest of my life down the drain.
Cara: All right. How do you know how to play?
Tad: Because I grew up in a family full of doctors. J.R. is really, really good. I'm just better at telling people what to do.
Cara: A teacher.
Tad: Kind of sort of. More time. Remember, it's like golf.
Cara: I'm exhausted already, I got to tell you.
Tad: You swing. You don't swat, ok? And -- much better.
Cara: Swing! So wait a minute. What happens if I get lucky and I score?
Tad: You will.
Jesse: And then there's this guy.
Brot: Maya's boyfriend?
Jesse: Yeah. What the hell is he up to?
Brot: Well, you said Frankie said that he doesn't even know about the baby.
Jesse: Yeah. Well, who's to say that Maya won't just tell him the truth, and who's to say that he won't pick up a trail from your squad car, where Maya left the baby, directly to my house?
Brot: Oh, come on, Chief. There's no way he figures out that your baby died in childbirth, and we substituted Maya's. He wouldn't go there. Come on.
Jesse: You don't know that. There are so many ways this kid could figure it out. I mean, if he does and he comes looking for that kid -- I don't want to think about it.
J.R.: My son loves me. Me, you understand?
Marissa: He loves who you were, not this person.
J.R.: Well, that's a bunch of crap. A.J. would never stay away from me if you hadn't been filling his head full of lies.
Marissa: I can't talk to you.
J.R.: That's fine. Why don't you two go off and do -- whatever you people do?
Bianca: We people?
J.R.: Yeah. I'll tell you something you're not gonna do. That's keep my son away from me. End of discussion.
Marissa: I was worried that this would happen, so I had a judge issue a temporary restraining order.
J.R.: You what?
Marissa: Until you go to rehab and prove to the court that you can be a responsible parent, I have full-time custody of A.J.
Cara: Wow. You do that well.
Cara: Yes. Yes. You do.
Tad: You're not being grateful?
Cara: Oh, my God, no.
Tad: I'm sorry.
Cara: The G-word. Am I ever gonna live that down?
Tad: Oh, no, just about 10 or 15 years.
Cara: Because what I feel for you is much more than gratitude. Who would've thought?
Tad: Lucky us.
Cara: Lucky us.
Cara: Yeah. [Kiss]
Maya: When I first met Mookie in New York, he wasn't like this at all. He was sweet and gentle. He couldn't do enough for me.
Angie: When did it change?
Maya: Not long after we moved in together. When I wasn't with him, he would want to know where I was, who I was talking to, especially if it was a guy.
Angie: And when he didn't get the right answers --
Maya: He just loves me so much.
Angie: No. This isn't love. It's controlling someone, being his possession. You don't belong to him, sweetheart. You are a strong, young woman with a mind of her own.
Maya: I don't know about that.
Angie: Well, I do because it took tremendous courage to come here and start a new life because deep inside, you knew that if you'd stayed, he would just continue to hurt you.
Maya: I wasn't afraid of anything. I could take anything, but I couldn't let him --
Angie: Couldn't let him do what?
Maya: I didn't move here from New York for myself. I was worried that Mookie might hurt someone else.
Angie: Who? Who was he going to hurt?
Jesse: I don't know. I see Maya holding the baby, looking at the baby. At some point, she's gonna realize that this is her baby that she is holding.
Brot: Well, first things first. We have to focus and concentrate on finding Hayward.
Jesse: I can't.
Brot: Come on, Chief.
Jesse: I can't. This is gonna end badly. I can feel it. I need to tell Angie the truth -- and I need to tell her now.
J.R.: I can't believe that you would do this to me.
Marissa: We have a court date in a couple of weeks. It's right there in the paperwork.
J.R.: To hell with your court date.
Marissa: If you can show up and prove that you're getting help and prove that you're getting sober, I have no problem returning to our joint custody arrangement.
J.R.: You what? You don't have a problem? You don't have a problem? Who the hell do you think you are?
Bianca: Easy, J.R.
J.R.: You back off. It's none of your damn business.
Bianca: Yeah, it is my business, and if you don't back off, Chief of Police is right over there.
J.R.: [Laughs] I don't care.
Marissa: J.R., you better care about turning this around, because if you don't, I will sue for permanent custody.
J.R.: I'll see you in hell first.
Bianca: Come on, Marissa.
J.R.: That's right. Go. Both of you, get out of my sight.
Asher: I've just had this knot in my stomach ever since I came here to meet my dad. Figured I could deal with it after I'd paid him back for how he just left, but it didn't turn out to be that simple.
Colby: Well, that's good. You guys seem like you guys are getting along, everything is going well.
Asher: Well, he's my dad, and I'm his son, but, tell you the truth, we don't know the first thing about each other. So I figured that'd be a great place to start, you know?
Colby: Heh. Wow. So you're living with Caleb.
Asher: Yeah. He asked me to move into Wildwind.
Colby: Wow, that's a really big step.
Asher: Yeah. I'm starting to do outpatient rehab.
Colby: That's really great.
Asher: Yeah. I hope so.
Colby: So that means that you'll be staying in town, right?
Colby: Yeah. So there should be no reason why we can't see one another, don't you think?
Asher: I wish I could go with that.
Colby: Yeah. Just go with it.
Asher: I can't.
Asher: Because that wouldn't be fair to you, Colby.
Colby: Don't I get a say in that?
Asher: I need to fix this, and it's not just the pills. It's the relationship with my dad. We can't be together till I can become the man that you deserve.
Marissa: Hi. I need to talk to you.
Tad: Yeah. Come on in. What is it? What's wrong?
Marissa: I just came from seeing J.R., and it was really bad. It was really, really bad.
Tad: What happened?
Bianca: Marissa got a temporary injunction for full custody of A.J., at least until J.R. straightens himself out.
Tad: And that couldn't have gone over well.
Bianca: No. He almost lost it on her.
Marissa: I've never seen this side of him. I hate what the alcohol is doing to him, but I have to protect our son.
Tad: Of course, you do.
Marissa: Right. You know, our poor, little boy.
Bianca: You two will be fine, ok? We'll make sure of that.
Tad: We all will. Marissa, you did the right thing.
Marissa: I didn't know any other way.
Tad: As much as I love J.R. -- I mean, he's been like a son to me ever since he was a little baby -- he is a Chandler, which means he's one of those people that doesn't recognize a problem till it hits his straight between the eyes.
J.R.: What do you want?
Mookie: I figured that since you're here, I'd go ahead and give you my notice.
J.R.: Notice about what?
Mookie: I won't be working on the house anymore. The only reason I took the job in the first place was to be around Maya, and now that she's out of there --
J.R.: Does it look like I care? Well, does it?
Mookie: I was just saying --
J.R.: Say it to Scott. I could care less what you do.
Brot: Think about this, Chief.
Jesse: I have thought about it, Brot, and I think telling Angela the truth now about the baby is a lot better than her finding out about it some other way.
Brot: Well, I'm not someone who would suggest lying to their wife.
Jesse: I know that, Brot. I just --
Brot: All right. Listen. Listen. Hear me out. Just hear me out. If you tell Angie the truth right now, she's gonna be mourning the loss of a child she never knew, and what if she tells Maya the truth? Your worst nightmare becomes a reality.
Jesse: And Maya takes Lucy back.
Brot: And Angie will be losing two babies. Does that make sense?
J.R.: You're still here.
Mookie: Nobody talks to me like that.
J.R.: Really? I'm sorry. Did I hurt your feelings?
Mookie: No wonder everybody thinks you're such an ass -- a drunk ass.
[Both chuckle, then J.R. upends the table and punches Mookie in the gut]
Angie: This person you were afraid Mookie might hurt, was it another man?
Maya: No. No. Mookie is the only guy I have ever been with. There's nobody else.
Angie: But you were afraid to stay, because he would hurt somebody. A friend? A family member?
Maya: No, ok? It doesn't matter.
Angie: No. I think it does. I think it matters very much.
Maya: Angie, please.
Angie: Look. You can trust me, Maya.
Maya: I was scared. I was so scared.
Angie: I know.
Maya: If Mookie knew what happened, what I did --
Angie: What did you do?
Maya: It was my fault. I should've been more careful.
Angie: It's ok. Whatever it is, we'll figure it out.
Maya: You can't tell anyone. Promise me that you won't.
Angie: I promise.
Maya: I moved here from New York because I was pregnant.
Maya: I tried to hide it for as long as I could, but if he hurt me then, it wouldn't be just me. So I left.
Angie: Well, where is your baby now? Maya, what happened to your baby?
Maya: The baby is gone.
Angie: Gone as in --
Maya: I had to give her up. I couldn't support a child by myself, and if Mookie found out, he might've --
Angie: You were afraid he might hurt her the way he's been hurting you.
Maya: And she's better off with a family who will love her and take care of her.
Angie: So you had a little girl.
Maya: A beautiful, little girl.
Colby: I hope it all goes well for you, Asher. I really do.
Colby: And I just want you to know that I'm not giving up on you. You know that, right?
Asher: I figured as much.
Colby: Yeah. As soon as everything is all figured out with Caleb, I'll be right here.
Asher: I don't want you waiting around on me, though.
Colby: You don't have a choice.
Asher: You need to move on with your life, you know, just --
Colby: I am moving on with my life. I am. I'm just expecting you to be a part of -- a part of my life one day.
Asher: I better get going, so --
Colby: Uh, well, aren't you gonna say good-bye to J.R.?
Asher: I already did. You heard about the accident, right?
Colby: Yes, wrapping Bianca's car around a tree. Yes. Yes. I heard about it.
Asher: Think he was drunk?
Colby: I don't know. Probably. He would just lie about it, anyways.
Asher: Maybe you should call your dad.
Colby: I have. I've called my dad several times. If he talked to J.R., it would just make everything worse.
Asher: What do you mean?
Colby: Well, he would come back here, and he would start running everything, and it would make J.R. feel worse than he already does. I don't know. Sometimes I wish I could switch places with one of my blogettes, get far, far, far away from here. Ha ha!
Asher: You know, I don't think you should go anywhere. I don't want you to have to deal with all this on your own. So I'm staying, ok?
Cara: You want to go see J.R., don't you?
Tad: I'd like to try to pound some sense into his head, for all the good it would do.
Cara: You should go to him.
Tad: No. I mean, I can't. Look. I've done this so many times, I'm sick of it. You and I have plans. We have very important plans, and I just can't keep postponing my life, because of what he chooses to do with his.
Cara: And that's very kind of you, but if you don't go see him, the whole time we're away, you're just gonna be thinking about him, right? So go. And I actually have things I need to do at the hospital.
Tad: Like what?
Cara: You know -- stuff.
Cara: A patient I need to see, right?
Tad: I love you for trying to give me an excuse.
Cara: Ok. How about this? I might need to have a little more packing time for myself. So go, go.
Tad: How about this? We're going on that trip, ok? Count on it.
Brot: Whoa, come on, man. Take it easy. Calm down.
Mookie: This guy is crazy and drunk.
Jesse: What happened?
Mookie: He came right across the table at me.
J.R.: I was provoked.
Jesse: Hey, hey, hey! Easy. You want to tell me what, exactly, provoked you?
J.R.: You know, he got in my face, started talking about my family.
Mookie: That's a damn lie.
J.R.: Really? Can you prove that?
Jesse: Look. I don't know who said what, but I do know he's telling the truth about one thing. You've been drinking.
Jesse: Little early in the day.
J.R.: I didn't realize there was a law against what time I start drinking.
Jesse: I'm just saying. I'm gonna call somebody. You got a sponsor, anybody?
Jesse: Let me take you home so you can sleep this off, all right? Come on.
J.R.: I'm not going anywhere with you, Jesse.
Jesse: J.R., don't make this any worse than it has to be.
J.R.: I didn't break any laws.
Jesse: You hit a man. That's a great beginning.
J.R.: Ok. Then talk to my lawyer. I'm out of here.
Jesse: Uh --
J.R.: Listen. You're in my way.
Jesse: Yeah. Hey. Good. Now I've got you for assaulting a police officer. Cuff him.
Brot: My pleasure.
J.R.: Come on, Jesse. I didn't hit you.
Jesse: Well, you pushed me. That's good enough.
J.R.: I'm sorry. I just want to go home.
Jesse: Not until we sort this out, all right?
J.R.: I said I'm sorry.
Jesse: J.R., you cannot go around drunk punching people.
J.R.: He was in my face.
Brot: Well, you're the only one we saw throw a punch, J.R.
J.R.: Yeah. I told you -- you know, never mind. Who cares?
Tad: Jesse, is there a problem?
Jesse: You want to tell him, J.R.?
J.R.: Gonna make a difference?
Jesse: Fine. I'll tell him. He hits this guy. I go over to break it up, and he decides to get physical with me, too, right?
J.R.: What a joke.
Jesse: Yeah. It was real funny.
J.R.: I had a bad day.
Tad: Yeah. Well, you've been stringing quite a few of those together lately, haven't you?
J.R.: Marissa served me the papers. She's got custody of A.J.
Tad: And you thought getting in a bar fight was a good way to win him back?
Bianca: You ok?
Marissa: Yeah. I'm gonna be fine.
Bianca: J.R. is --
Marissa: J.R. is sick. Nobody can help him. I mean, if he can't even get sober for his own son --
Bianca: Shh --
Marissa: Hey, baby, how are you? I'm sorry. I thought you were upstairs with Opal and the girls.
A.J.: I heard you crying, Mommy.
Marissa: I'm sorry, baby. Come here. Look. I was a little sad before, but I'm ok now, especially now I'm seeing you. What is it? What's wrong?
A.J.: I miss my daddy. Not the mean one. The nice one.
Marissa: I know.
Colby: I'm a big girl, all right? I can handle J.R., and I don't want you postponing what you have to do to babysit me.
Asher: Yeah, but, Col --
Colby: No. Listen. I'm gonna be completely honest with you. I would love more than anything for you to stay here, but the truth is, as long as I can remember, I've learned to depend on myself, ok? My dad, ok, if I leaned on him for anything, he would completely control my life, and my mother, she has shown me how far I can trust her, and then there's J.R. So I would have to be in pretty lame shape to have to count on any of them.
Asher: You can count on me.
Colby: And I believe that. I do -- ha ha! -- But now -- you need to take care of yourself.
Asher: I still don't like you being here alone.
Colby: I'm gonna be totally fine. It's not gonna be forever, and besides, I kind of want to stick around and see what kind of guy you turn into. Ha ha!
Asher: You're kind of amazing --
Colby: Thank you.
Asher: Just to let you know.
Colby: Thanks. Well, that's what my bloggers all tell me.
Colby: Ha ha! Ok. Well, I guess you better get going. You got to figure things out with Caleb and figure things out with your life, and -- keep in touch, ok?
Asher: I will.
Colby: And I'm gonna be fine, be completely fine. I'm the break-off girl, remember?
Asher: Ha ha! Ok. [Kiss]
Colby: Hey, Dad, it's me -- Colby again. Will you please call me? It's important, ok? Please? Please, Dad. Ahh -- hey, guys, it's me -- the break-off girl. So there's this guy, and he is sweet, and he is smart, and he is kind, and he popped into my life at the perfect time. Just when I thought I couldn't be involved with anybody else, he made it so it was possible, but now not so much because he has his own stuff that he has to figure out, and I completely understand that. I do. I understand -- but I'm not gonna act like it doesn't hurt. I thought that I had it all figured out. I was ready to give up my independence and my freedom, but I realized -- I realized that it's not worth it if you don't have somebody to share it with.
Marissa: We all want your daddy to get better.
A.J.: Well, why isn't he?
Marissa: Sometimes your dad gets really mad at himself when things don't go the way that he wants them to, so he will say and do things that he doesn't really mean.
A.J.: Like yelling?
Marissa: Yeah, exactly like yelling, but you know that when he isn't feeling bad, he doesn't do those things.
A.J.: Well, maybe I can help him.
Marissa: No, sweetheart. No.
A.J.: Maybe if I be really, really nice to him, he'll be ok again.
Marissa: Honey, he already knows that you're the nicest boy in the whole world. You know, the only person that can help Daddy get better right now is Daddy.
Angie: Must've been so hard for you, giving up your baby and keeping all of these feelings inside.
Maya: I never had anyone to talk to.
Angie: Well, you do now. Whatever you're going through, I want you to know that you can share anything with me.
Maya: You've already done so much for me -- letting me stay here, letting me take care of Lucy.
Angie: Oh, sweetheart, is that hard for you?
Maya: Oh, no, no.
Angie: Because I'd understand being around another baby, especially another little girl --
Maya: No. I was only with my daughter for a little while. She was beautiful, like an angel. Like your baby girl. When I held Lucy in my arms for the first time, it took my breath away. She looked so much like the baby that I gave up.
Tad: I'm sorry. Really.
Jesse: Tad, you just need to talk to him ok?
Tad: And say what?
Jesse: I don't know. Clearly, you're the only one he seems to listen to.
Tad: Not lately. Not anymore.
Jesse: Look. Now that you're here, let me just take the cuffs off like it never happened, ok?
Tad: What would that do?
Jesse: Well, it'll keep him out of jail.
J.R.: Can't lose my son, Tad.
Tad: Well, why didn't you think about that before you picked up the bottle?
J.R.: I can quit, ok? I've done it before. Just get me out of this.
Tad: J.R., I love you. I always have, always will, but I've gone to bat for you every single time you've gotten in trouble, and it hasn't done a damn bit of good, and I'm not the only one. You've had an awful lot of support. How many times has Jesse compromised his job to get you off the hook, because I begged him? And it doesn't seem to help.
J.R.: What are you saying?
Tad: It's time for you to grow up -- and no more friendly directions to turn. You're gonna have to clean up your own mess, whatever it takes. Jesse, I think we're done here.
J.R.: Are you serious?
Brot: Come on, J.R.
J.R.: No, no. Wait a second. Please, Tad.
Tad: I'm sorry.
J.R.: I hate you. You know that? You're weak. I hate you!
