Reporter: 2011 is just hours away. Stay tuned with us tonight as we usher in the new year --

[Erica turns off TV]

Erica's voice: Dear Mother, it's hard to believe it's been a year since my last letter. If people knew I wrote to you like this, they'd probably think I'm crazy, but it keeps me sane. It makes me feel close to you. I swear I can feel your love. Where to begin? You'd say, "Start with the blessings," so I will. You should see Bianca. Things got a little crazy here, as they tend to do, but Bianca didn't hesitate. She left Paris, Reese, and came home to help. I couldn't have gotten through this year without her. Bianca has that quiet inner strength she could only have gotten from you. But she's not my only blessing. Jackson and I have found each other again. I know how happy that must make you. As much as I love Jack, I thought we could never get back what we had. I'm so grateful. And yet one thing I've learned this year is that fate can turn either way, and sometimes it's been so fast, it throws you to your knees. When I was on the plane, getting ready to crash in the middle of nowhere, I remember thinking, "Is this how it ends?" But I survived. A man found me, saved me. I hated him at first -- it was mutual -- but now we're partners, friends even. It's something -- I can't describe it. He's helping me, and as you know, I'm not actually the kind that wants help. Sometimes even I don't know what to do. I just make it up as I go along. Mom, what can a mother do when her daughter's heart is broken? I know Zach's with you, and he aches for Kendall as much as she aches for him. Take care of him. I'll take care of Kendall. But you already know about the girls, don't you? You want to know about me, about what I'm feeling, what I'm thinking. I've gotten myself into a situation. I guess that's putting it mildly. But it was the right decision, even though I'm in trouble -- yes, Mother, again. I know you understand. I also know exactly what you would say. "You're finally happy, Erica. Don't mess it up." That's one of my New Year's resolutions, Mother. I know exactly what I have and how much it means to me, and I won't do anything to ruin it. Every year I know myself a little better. Maybe this will be a year I find all the answers to the questions I've been asking since you tucked me in at night. Do you remember how you'd let me stay up till midnight on New Year's Eve to make my resolutions? I loved to make them. I didn't always keep them, but I'm starting this new year with Jack, and I intend to keep every single one.

Jack: [Hums] Hey, you.

Erica: Hi.

Jack: Hi.

Erica: Where have you been?

Jack: Making sure the details of our dinner were perfect so that when we ring in the new year, we'll have the best year ever.

Erica: We will. We will.

Jack: Our reservation's not for a couple of hours yet, but if you'd like to start celebrating a little early, it'd be ok with me.

Erica: Jack, as lovely as that sounds -- and it does sound lovely -- 2010 is ticking away, and I still have some other things that I really need to do.

Jack: I don't suppose they include sharing a bubble bath with the big guy here, do they?

Erica: You're full of good ideas --

Jack: Good. That's a start.

Erica: But I have to see my girls. I have to tell them to have a happier new year.

Jack: That's a wonderful idea. Do you mind if I come with?

Erica: Are you sure?

Jack: Sure.

Erica: Because I have a few other things that I need to do, as well.

Jack: I'm still kind of unclear as to why we're here.

Erica: It's part of my way of saying good-bye to last year, the good and the bad. He is definitely part of the bad.

Jack: Sweetheart, why are you doing this to yourself? Why would you waste your time with him?

Erica: Zach is dead because of David. Kendall's loss is tremendous. And I may not have control over what he's done or the pain he's caused, but this makes me feel like I do.

[Cell phone rings]

Jack: It's Lily -- her annual New Year's Eve call. I'll give her a call back.

Erica: Yes, go ahead. Take that. I'm fine.

Jack: You're sure?

Erica: I am, really.

Jack: Be right back. Hey, sweetheart.

Liza: Can I help you?

Erica: I'm not packing, if that's what you're worried about.

Liza: That's actually kind of funny, except I wouldn't use that in court, because I don't think the jury has the same sense of humor that I do.

Erica: You're staying up nights, aren't you, just trying to whip up some nasty motive for my having shot David? I saved a man's life.

Liza: You tried to kill David. Like mother, like daughter.

Erica: What do you mean by that?

Liza: What exactly do you think Kendall was trying to do with that pillow?

Erica: I don't know what you think this is.

Liza: Yeah, I think that's pretty clear. Due to the city budget cuts, they had to replace the guard with a security camera, which happens to catch every single little detail. So I'm reviewing the security footage, looking for some sort of movement, some sort of life, and bingo. Can you believe I almost missed that?

Erica: "Bingo"? This is nothing.

Liza: The only reason that David is still alive is because the moment after this, Dr. Castillo walks into the room and takes the pillow out of Kendall's hand, keeping her from smothering the man that she feels is responsible for her husband's death.

Erica: You really want to do this, Liza? You want to declare war on my family?

Liza: You and your family have declared war on David. Really, who's next? Bianca?

Erica: Don't bring my daughters into this. You can come after me, Liza, all you want. You can try to throw me in prison. You can take away everything. But if you come after my daughter, you will find out what I'm capable of.

Jack: What the hell's going on here?

Liza: Security footage caught Kendall trying to take a pillow to David, and the only reason that she didn't do it is because a doctor walked in.

Jack: May I? I don't have to explain the rules of evidence to you. You can't have someone put in jail for thinking about a crime.

Liza: That's very true, only she happens to be in the act.

Jack: It's your interpretation. You've got nothing, so back off, or you're gonna find yourself right in the middle of a harassment suit so fast your head is gonna spin. And after what you did to Greenlee, dragging her through court that way, you know it'll stick. Think about it. Let's go.

Erica: I need to go after her.

Jack: You knew, didn't you?

Erica: What?

Jack: "What?" About Kendall, about the pillow.

Erica: Yes, I knew.

Jack: When did she tell you?

Erica: She didn't. Caleb did.

Jack: Why didn't you tell me?

Erica: I had my reasons.

Jack: What are they?

Erica: You know now.

Jack: Erica, I should've known that. You're my fiancée. We're a family. What affects you, your daughters -- if something happened to them, it affects me.

Erica: What about your daughter? She's still David's wife. I have no idea how she would respond.

Jack: Don't. You just now thought of that. What is it? Why would you not tell me? Is it that you don't trust me?

Erica: It has nothing to do with trust.

Jack: Then what is it? Because my understanding was this was going to begin a new time for us. All the old issues put away, a new way of doing things. Isn't that what we talked about?

Erica: But I'm not going to apologize for protecting my daughter.

Jack: Protecting? From who? From me?

Erica: Look, Jack, I almost died this year, too. And when I was up on that mountain with Caleb --

Jack: Let's just leave Caleb the hell out of this, shall we?

Erica: What I'm trying to say is that I saw what it's like when you run from reality, and you can't do that, Jack. You have to face reality no matter how difficult it is. Where are you going?

Jack: I'm gonna go outside, then I'm gonna take a little moment. Because if I don't, I'm afraid I'm gonna say something that I'm gonna regret. I'll see you at dinner.

Erica: Hi. May I join you?

Kendall: Hi, Mom. What are you doing here?

Erica: Sandra told me that you were here. You were picking up food for the boys.

[Kendall coughs]

Erica: Honey, you really shouldn't be out tonight, not in this weather, not with that coughing. You have a cold, and now you're drinking wine on top of it? Your heart?

Kendall: Mom, I'm fine.

Bianca: A great way to end the year -- hi, Mother -- Happy New Year -- and my sister. Is this waiting for takeout, too, or celebrating early?

Kendall: It's just a glass of wine.

Erica: How are the girls?

Bianca: They're so excited about their mac and cheese. And I wanted to show you some pictures from the other day. Kendall, you have to see this. Gaby's first snow angel.

Kendall: Look at that face. Oh, my goodness.

Erica: Hi.

Caleb: You ok?

Erica: Of course. I will be.

Caleb: Can I help?

Erica: No. It's nothing I can't handle.

Caleb: Maybe you can help me. Come here. I'm trying to make sense out of what happened the day that Hayward was shot. I'm talking to everybody who had contact with you that day.

Erica: Is that really necessary?

Caleb: Yes, it is. I've already talked to Bianca, and I need to spend some time with Kendall.

Erica: No. Absolutely not.

Caleb: She might be able to shed some light.

Erica: She can't. Just leave her out of it.

Caleb: I'm not gonna do anything to upset her. You can trust me.

Erica: It's not a question of trust. Just keep Kendall as far away from what happened to David as possible.

Caleb: Talk to me.

Erica: Liza knows. She knows about Kendall almost smothering David.

Caleb: Ok.

Erica: Ok. So now you understand why I want you to keep Kendall out of this.

Caleb: What happened in Hayward's room and what happened on that rooftop are completely unrelated.

Erica: Make my case without Kendall. Where's your sister?

Bianca: Her food was ready, so she left.

Erica: Do you see what you've done? She shouldn't be alone. I meant what I said. Happy new year.

Bianca: You, too, Mom. What was that about?

Caleb: I wonder if you can help me with something. It won't take long. Hey. Happy New Year.

Asher: Right back at you. I saw what you did at the hospital with the plaque honoring my mother. You must've donated a ton of money. You're probably gonna save a lot of kids that are born early.

Caleb: Those kids need all the help they can get.

Asher: It was really cool of you.

Caleb: You busy?

Asher: I was just about to grab some dinner.

Caleb: I wonder if you could help me with something. You'll come with me?

Asher: Just like that? You speak and I jump?

Caleb: Never mind.

Asher: All right. Fine. I'll do it.

Caleb: Thank you.

Asher: Wow. What a way to spend New Year's.

Bianca: And what is it exactly that we're going to do?

Caleb: There were three people on this rooftop the night that Hayward was shot -- your mother, David, and Ryan. We're gonna reenact exactly what happened.

Bianca: What's that going to do?

Caleb: Hopefully, it's gonna tell us what took place that night. You're gonna be your mother. You're gonna be David. Come on with me. Come here. You go over there. You're gonna come through this door. Just come up from the door. You're gonna see the struggle taking place here. There's a gun at your feet here. When I tell you, you're gonna pick up the gun, and you're gonna aim it. You, come here. You're gonna grab me. Grab me hard like you're gonna throw me over the edge of this -- throw me off the roof. Ok? Are you ready? You ready? Grab me. Go ahead. Grab me! Come on! Like you're gonna throw me off the roof. Push me. Now, Bianca, come. Pick up the gun. Pick up the gun. Now!

Bianca: Bang!

Caleb: You're not standing where I told you to stand. You were supposed to be over there.

Bianca: But I didn't have a clear angle over there.

Caleb: You didn't have a clear angle over there? Thank you.

Erica: Kendall? Open the door! I know you're in there. Kendall? Kendall!

Kendall: Shouldn't you be out celebrating with Jackson?

Erica: You're still sleeping down here?

Kendall: No. This is major party mode. I got the good eats, I have the bubbly, and I'm watching the ball drop from the comfort of my own couch.

Erica: You've hardly eaten anything.

Kendall: I just started. Go. I'm good. I'm fine. I'm dandy. [Coughs] Ok. Stop reading into this and thinking everything I do is horrible and tragic. I'm just not ready. Ok? Millions of people watch the ball drop from their couch on New Year's Eve.

Erica: But they haven't all just lost their husbands.

Kendall: You're right. They don't have an excuse, and neither do you. So go. Be with Jackson. Have fun. I'm sure I'm keeping you from at least three fabulous parties.

Erica: Parties? Is that what you think is going through my head right now? Parties? You think I want to know about red carpets and V.I.P. rooms?

Kendall: You live a glamorous life. You don't have to apologize for it.

Erica: I'm not apologizing for it. I love my glamorous life. Jack and I were really soaking up our life. We were really soaking it up in horse-drawn carriage rides in Vienna and spas in Reykjavik and the Borghese Gardens in Rome. But, boy, the minute I got off the plane here in Pine Valley -- wow -- my glamorous life just disappeared, and it has been just one crisis after another! Just crisis after crisis!

Kendall: Don't you think I know all of that?

Erica: I don't think you know for one second what my life is like. Yes, I have it all. When I wake up in the morning feeling really energized, I feel great. But then it starts. Then the day begins, and it's one challenge after the other after the other! So many shoes to fill, so many hats to wear -- family leader trying to keep all of you together, corporate titan, inspirational icon, and sober role model!

Kendall: Mom, please. I don't need any of your grand, dramatic gestures right now.

Erica: "Grand"?! "Dramatic"?!

Kendall: Mom! Mom! No! Mom!

[Erica drinks champagne right out of the bottle]

Kendall: Do you know what you just did?

Erica: Yes, of course, I know what I just did. I have been sober for seven years and six months -- except for the time that Caleb tried to pour liquor down my throat.

Kendall: What were you thinking?

Erica: Do you have any idea what it's like to be an addict? Of course, you don't. I make everything look so easy. You never see my fight with temptation behind my smile. You never see the inner fury and frustration behind my meek little glass of sparkling cider. I'm Erica Kane, damn it! I shouldn't just be brought down by one lousy little flute of champagne!

Kendall: You're not. Not usually.

Erica: I'm not? Like my mind is not racing right this minute with possibilities? Anything, anything to get you the hell out of this room, so I can be alone with this bottle and have one more sip, just one more sip?

Kendall: Mom, what is going on with you?

Erica: Oh. Really? Now it's my turn? You get to ask what's going on with me? I get to have a crisis? I didn't know that was allowed. I thought all I was supposed to do was just make sure that you were safe. You have no idea what it takes.

Kendall: Please, please tell me what it takes. Tell me what you're doing right now that is clearly just ripping you up. If it's about me and Bianca, then maybe we can help you. I want to help you.

Erica: I should go to a meeting.

Kendall: Ok. All right. I'm sure an A.A. meeting is probably a really great idea, but I still want to do something. I don't totally understand what's going on with you right now, Mom. I guess maybe it's because you're always this rock.

Erica: I'm a rock? I'm a rock? The rock was my mother, your grandmother. I brought so much trouble to her doorstep, and she never once faltered, not once. But I'm not her, and I can't be her. I never can be her. And I miss her, and I need her, and I need her to come to see me and see that I'm all right, but that's not gonna happen.

Kendall: Just come here. I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I didn't realize this. Mom, I miss Mona, too. She was so strong. I wish I'd known her longer. Look at me. Tell me what I can do.

Erica: There's nothing you can do. There's nothing you can do. There's nothing anybody can do. Just -- there are things we really do have to deal with. Liza knows about you and David and what happened in his room.

Kendall: How?

Erica: The security footage. She saw you, pillow in hand, standing over him. Don't worry. Don't worry because that's not enough. That's not enough for her to bring charges.

Kendall: You sure about that?

Erica: Listen to me. I want you to look at me, and I want you to be very sure of one thing. You are not alone in this. And I know that I wasn't with you for most of your life, but I am here now. And what you saw was just a momentary lapse, just a little crack. That's all, but that's done. That's over. And whatever needs to be done I will do, and I don't care who understands.

Kendall: Mom, what are you doing right now? Honestly, you're worrying about me when clearly you are going through so much yourself and -- [Coughs]

Erica: Honey, please, come on. Sit down now, and let me get you some water.

Kendall: Mom, I'm fine.

Erica: No, you're not. Please. Come on, now. Relax. Just relax.

Caleb: What's going on?

Kendall: Mom, I'm fine.

Erica: No, you're not. You need to just sit down. Kendall!

[Kendall collapses into Caleb's arms]

Erica: How is she?

Frankie: The preliminary exam indicates Kendall has pneumonia.

Erica: Pneumonia?

Frankie: Has she been taking care of herself? Eating, sleeping right?

Erica: No. No. She's been grieving.

Griffin: Basically, she's made herself vulnerable.

Frankie: This is Dr. Castillo.

Erica: Oh. You've been working with Bianca.

Griffin: And Kendall.

Frankie: He's a cardiologist and a cardiac surgeon.

Erica: Why are you on Kendall's case? Is there a bigger problem?

Griffin: Her lungs haven't been functioning properly, which puts a strain on the heart, making heart failure a possibility and also rejection.

Erica: But it's been so long, and Kendall's been so healthy until now.

Griffin: She's on antibiotics. She's stable.

Erica: May I see her?

Frankie: We're still getting her settled, but I promise to get you in as soon as I can.

Erica: Thank you. Oh, my God. Will you excuse me for one moment? I just need a moment alone.

Erica's voice: Mother, help me be for Kendall what you were for me, so I can keep her safe through whatever's ahead.

Caleb: The doctor says you can see Kendall now.

Frankie: I'll keep you updated on her progress.

Griffin: Thank you.

Erica: I can see her?

Griffin: A few minutes.

Erica: I'm so sorry we argued, sweetheart. I pushed too hard, and I cracked for a minute, but I'm just trying to protect you. There are certain things I just can't say. But you just focus on getting well now, strong and healthy, and I will do what I need to do, and then everything's gonna be fine. I promise.

Griffin: I'm sorry. I'm going to have to ask you to leave for a little while.

Erica: You'll let me know if there's any change?

Griffin: Of course.

Erica: I have to call Bianca and Jack.

Caleb: I already did that.

Erica: Thank you.

Caleb: You really would do anything for her, wouldn't you?

Erica: Our children always come first.

Caleb: If they're sick, you'd trade places with them. They do something wrong, you'd do the same. You didn't shoot David, did you? Kendall did. I don't know the details, but I do know that it was Kendall who pulled the trigger, not you.

Erica: I don't believe this. My daughter's in there. She's grieving for her dead husband. She's lying in a hospital bed, hooked up to monitors and tubes, and you are throwing around this nonsense?

Caleb: It's not nonsense. I can prove it, and I'm on your side.

Erica: It's impossible for you to prove it, because I shot David.

Caleb: Come with me, and I'll show you.

Erica: All right. Fine. But only to prove how wrong you are, and then we're done. Ok. We're here. So what is this fabulous theory of yours that somehow incriminates my daughter, even though she was nowhere near here when David was shot?

Caleb: You said you fired the gun from here.

Erica: Yes. Uh-huh.

Caleb: From here?

Erica: Yes.

Caleb: You couldn't have.

Erica: Maybe I made a mistake. It all happened so fast.

Caleb: This is probably where you were standing when the gun was fired by Kendall, who was here. In his statement, Ryan said that he heard a bang after the gun was fired. That "bang" was the sound of that door slamming shut behind Kendall, as she left you with the gun that you took to protect her.

Erica: You're right. It was Thanksgiving. Kendall was trying so hard to be strong for her little boys. But after she told Spike that Zach was gone, she said that she needed to be alone for a little while, that she needed to get some fresh air. So I followed her.

Caleb: Here?

Erica: Yes. I could see from the elevator that she had gone to the roof, and I was afraid, so I followed her. I didn't know that Ryan and David were up here fighting. I didn't know that David had a gun. Thank God that Ryan knocked that gun out of David's hands. I just wish I had gotten here sooner. And that's when I saw Kendall holding the gun, and I knew I only had a few seconds while Ryan was focused on David. But I knew what I had to do. And that's when I came walking out holding the gun.

Caleb: There's one thing that doesn't make sense. Kendall would never let you take the blame. Why hasn't she said something?

Erica: Because she doesn't seem to remember. And that's the way it's going to stay.

Jack: Bianca? How's Kendall?

Bianca: I don't know. They won't let me see her.

Jack: Where's your mom? Why isn't she here?

Erica: Kendall has completely blocked shooting David. She's been through so much. She's so fragile. It's as if her own conscience knows that she can't handle it.

Caleb: So you're taking it all on yourself?

Erica: It's the only way. Kendall needs me, and I need you. I need you to keep this secret. I need you to keep me free to help Kendall, to help us both get through this.

[Noisemakers blow]

Erica: Listen to them celebrating a new year, a new year they all want to believe will bring them only good. But the past doesn't end at midnight. I've watched the sun come up way too many mornings lately, desperately seeking the solution. When I came down from that mountain, I was looking for a new purpose.

Revelers: 10, 9, 8, 7 --

Erica: Please help me. I need you.

Revelers: Happy New Year! Whoo! Whoo!

Caleb: You can count on me. You can trust me.

[Erica and Caleb kiss]

Erica's voice: That's one of my New Year's resolutions, Mother. I know exactly what I have and how much it means to me, and I won't do anything to ruin it.
