Greenlee: Maybe I can get the judge to declare a mistrial.
Kendall: You don't know how this will all play out.
Greenlee: It's gonna play out with Ryan being indicted for David's murder.
Kendall: Green --
Greenlee: For weeks I've been trying to keep him out of prison. And then what does he do? He goes and he puts a target on his back, with the help of my father. It's like he wants to be guilty.
Kendall: We both know he could be. Now with this new witness, there's an even better chance.
Greenlee: I'd do anything to protect him. I'm not going to let him go to jail.
Kendall: It might be out of your hands right now.
Greenlee: I know one part of Ryan's strategy is not gonna work. He wants to convince the jury he's madly in love with me, and I've been resisting him.
Kendall: Right. Like, makes him look like he has the motive.
Greenlee: But it's getting harder and harder to resist him. When it comes to Ryan, I can't be neutral. I'm so emotional. It's like everyone in that courtroom can see right through me, like they know.
Kendall: That you still love him?
Damon: So I'm just saying if you stared a little less at your papers and a little more at the back of your eyelids, you might not lose things.
Liza: I am not losing anything.
Damon: Hey, hey, hey! Hang on. Say, do you want me to take you back to the hospital?
Liza: I was never in the hospital. Remember that.
Erica: Well, you didn't sleep at all last night, did you?
Jack: Not too much. I have kind of a big day today.
Erica: I know you do. You put Ryan on the stand and make it look like he's the one who killed David, and then Greenlee gets off.
Jack: That's the plan, yes.
Erica: She's still not talking to you?
Jack: I guess I should've expected that. I mean, we did do this behind her back, blindsided her with this witness.
Erica: Only to keep her out of prison. Jack, you're working yourself to death. Ryan is risking everything. Is she the least bit grateful?
Zach: My favorite two women. How you doing?
Greenlee: I'm better.
Zach: If there's anything --
Greenlee: Don't, Zach. Don't say it. I've caused enough problems for you, for Kendall, for everyone. This is my mess, and I'll clean it up.
Zach: My money's on you always. I'll check on the boys and get some breakfast. Ok?
Kendall: All right. Sit down. Do you want some advice on how you can make this work?
Greenlee: Please. Anything.
Kendall: All right. Tell Ryan the truth. Just say those three words -- "I love you." Stop pretending.
Greenlee: What would that solve?
Kendall: I don't know. That you two belong together?
Ryan: Hey. I was trying to call you. Do you have your cell turned off?
Madison: No. My phone's on. I wasn't ready to talk to you.
Ryan: I know you were really upset at the courthouse.
Madison: Hey, I need to know where this is going. I need to know where I stand with you.
Ryan: You have every right to be angry.
Madison: Do you even know why?
Ryan: The witness.
Madison: It's not just that you put him up there on that stand to do everything but accuse you of murder. It's that you didn't tell me.
Ryan: I wanted to. I didn't even know we were gonna use that guy until the last minute. He came into the picture last minute. I wanted to a couple of times, once I came close to, but --
Madison: But what? You don't trust me? I thought we had something pretty great together, but then you just let me sit in that courtroom, and the whole time you gave me no clue what you were doing.
Ryan: It was wrong. It was completely wrong. I should've let you in. I'm really sorry. The last thing that I want to do is to hurt you, though. That's -- you have been so unbelievable. You've hung in there so much longer than any other woman would have, and I recognize that. I mean, I -- I haven't been available to you. I haven't -- I'm gonna make it up to you, though. Ok? I'm gonna make it up to you.
Ryan: Hello? Jack. Yeah, I'm gonna be leaving in a few minutes. I will be ready. I'm the first witness.
Madison: We better go. Greenlee needs you.
Kendall: Coming into the trial, you talked about getting Ryan back once it was over.
Greenlee: All I'm thinking about right now is not being late to court, where Ryan will be seated as always -- next to Madison.
Kendall: I'll get my purse.
Greenlee: No. No, no, no. You're not coming to court today.
Kendall: No, Greenlee, I missed it yesterday. I'm not gonna miss it again. I'll tell Zach.
Greenlee: You're gonna tell Zach that you're leaving, after he came back for you? No. Your job is to make him stay here for you and for the kids and for me.
Kendall: Greenlee --
Greenlee: End of discussion. You know I'm right.
Zach: The boys are all set.
Kendall: They are so happy you're back. We all are.
Zach: No one's happier than me. What, you don't believe me?
Kendall: I heard you on the phone late last night talking about the casinos.
Zach: Sorry to wake you.
Kendall: There's still problems?
Zach: But I will handle those problems. Is that what you're worried about?
Kendall: A little.
Zach: Don't worry about it. Ok? Let me worry about it. You just concentrate on our new life together here.
Kendall: Hmm. Are you doing something there to try and distract me?
Zach: Is it working?
Kendall: It's not bad. Not bad.
Zach: I got to try harder.
Kendall: Yeah. Yeah, you do.
Kendall: Mm-hm hmm.
Kendall: Huh. That's better. That's much better, actually. I like that. Here we are. We're here. We're here in our home together.
Zach: We're here to stay. I promise.
Zach: Mm-hmm. What do you want to do?
Kendall: I don't know. What do you want to do?
Asher: Hey, Colby.
Colby: Hello. Let's do something.
Asher: Do what?
Colby: I don't know. I was thinking we could go to the mall.
Asher: You and Damon get into it or something?
Colby: No. He's working for my mother today. What, does that mean I'm just supposed to sit around and do nothing?
Asher: I don't know.
Colby: Exactly. So let's go get some costumes, and we'll get some decorations for the house. What do you say?
Asher: Maybe some other time.
Colby: Come on! Asher, seriously. I just thought if you weren't doing anything --
Asher: Halloween's not my thing.
Colby: You don't like hiding that pretty face? Is that why you don't like it?
Asher: Just leave it alone. Ok?
Colby: No. I seriously want to know why Halloween is so tragic.
Asher: It's the day that my mother died.
Caleb: Jackson. Good luck today.
Jack: Thanks, Caleb.
Erica: You came to see the trial?
Caleb: No. I'm filing papers for Marissa's divorce. Then I'm gonna go about getting my company back.
Jack: Maybe you should help Caleb in that regard. My daughter's on trial for her life today, and she needs nothing but fans in that courtroom.
Erica: I certainly behaved like a fan of hers in the courtroom. I testified on her behalf when I was on the stand. I can certainly put our differences aside.
Jack: I need total support today, for me and for Greenlee, and let's face it. Sometimes you have a hard time hiding your feelings for her. So instead of sitting in back of the courtroom all day wondering what's going on with Cortlandt Electronics, you could maybe help Caleb instead.
Caleb: I'll see you back at Wildwind.
Jack: Hey, hey, hey. Come here. I'm not trying to hurt you.
Erica: I'm not trying to hurt you either. Ohh. Good luck today. Please call me.
Liza: Yeah, just telling Damon here how he's messed up some of my paperwork.
Tad: Really? Because from over there, it looked like he was doing his best to keep you perpendicular to the floor.
Damon: No. She was just showing me her heel, the kind that she wants on the shoes that I'm taking to the, um --
Tad: "Shoemaker" is the word you're looking for.
Liza: And I want you to go by my office and pick up those files I asked you for.
Damon: Got it. Tension.
Liza: Tad? So does Nick Pearson ring a bell?
Tad: Yeah. Wasn't he the chap who was the last to testify?
Liza: Ah. He's also the guy that you tracked down. Somehow got this new version of the events out of him? Really, you'd do anything to see me lose this case against Greenlee.
Tad: Liza, as hard as this is for you to believe, not everything is about you.
Greenlee's voice: What would all a sudden be clouding my judgment?
Jack: The fact that you're in love with Ryan.
Madison: Do you need to talk to Jackson about your testimony?
Ryan: I'm sure he needs to talk to Greenlee first. And if he needs me, he'll find me.
Madison: Yeah, and he'll put you on the witness stand and make you look like a murderer
Madison: I know that's the plan. I just wish you didn't have to be so good at it.
Jack: I would've gotten you excused from court today if I could have.
Greenlee: Hmm. Why haven't you? You've controlled everything else in my life.
Jack: Because it wouldn't look good, and I'm trying to protect you.
Greenlee: By sacrificing Ryan? No, thank you.
Ryan: What Ryan and I are trying to do is save your life. You should be doing the same thing.
Kendall: So what do your casino partners want? Is it just about money?
Zach: It's always about money. It's my job to convince them otherwise.
Kendall: You can be pretty persuasive when you want to be.
Zach: You noticed, huh?
Kendall: Yeah. I love this, Zach. I do. I love us being here together -- you, me, and the boys. I want so much to have everything just be done. I want to be free and clear of everything that's caused a problem.
Zach: And we will be. What?
Kendall: Nothing. I'm just, you know, enjoying you.
Zach: Do that. Instead of doing that, why don't you go visit your mother? Worry about that.
Kendall: You're trying to get rid of me now.
Zach: No. I got a business meeting with my lawyers. It's boring.
Kendall: Yeah? Boring casino stuff?
Zach: Yeah. It's what it is. Hey, look at me. Nothing, no one's gonna come between this homecoming. Deal?
Colby: I am so sorry.
Asher: Hey, you didn't know.
Colby: You told me your mom died in childbirth, but you never mentioned the date.
Asher: It's not like you go around advertising it, I guess.
Colby: But how does that make you feel?
Asher: I don't know. It's not like I knew or anything.
Colby: But it must make you feel like -- a little sad, right?
Asher: I just wonder what it would've been like to have a mother. Anyways --
Colby: Oh, my God.
Colby: I just realized something. Your birthday is October 31.
Asher: I don't really celebrate my birthday.
Colby: I know. It's really, really hard. I do. But it's the one day we have that is completely ours.
Asher: No, it's not. It belongs to her. It's about making sure that you never forget her.
Erica: Have you heard anything from J.R.?
Caleb: Why would I hear from him? He told you what you could do with any deal between us.
Erica: I'm concerned about all the implications he was making, about something dark and scary in your past that I should be worried about.
Caleb: You don't think I'm dark and scary enough in the present?
Erica: Look, J.R. said something about family not meaning anything to you.
Caleb: Do you really believe that?
Erica: No, I don't. Not at all. I see how respectful you are to Palmer's legacy, how hard you're trying to fulfill his wishes. But J.R. was very specific in the words he chose. Look, Caleb, I'm not trying to pry. I'm really not. Heaven knows I have enough going on in my own life without having to worry about yours. But if J.R. has found out something about you, then I really need to know what it --
[Knock on door]
Erica: What it is.
Caleb: There isn't. [Opens door] Hey.
Caleb: Your mom's inside. Come on in.
Kendall: If this is a bad time --
Erica: Actually, honey --
Caleb: Actually we were just finishing up. Go ahead. You must have a lot to catch up on.
Kendall: Really, Mom, this can wait.
Erica: Oh, no, no. Really, it's fine. But where is your husband? I'm just shocked that you could pry yourself away.
Kendall: Yeah. Zach is trying to sell the casinos, and his business partners are giving him a hard time, but he refuses to let me get involved.
Erica: He refuses to let you get involved? Of course, you're involved. You're his wife.
Kendall: Yeah. It's like I just want so badly to make things work. It's like Zach and I are on the brink of something great again, and I don't want to screw it up.
Erica: Then don't.
Kendall: Sometimes I wish I could just sit back and let other people handle things. It'd be so much easier.
Erica: Maybe. But the truth is when we love someone, we will walk through hell for them.
Kendall: And back.
Erica: And back.
Kendall: That's right. You got it. We do.
Erica: We'll do that.
Bianca: I wanted to see that it was true. You're really back.
Zach: I really am. What do you think? Hi.
Bianca: It's good to see you.
Zach: Good to see you.
Bianca: Is Kendall -- are you and she good?
Zach: Yeah. She's gone to see your mother. I don't know how she is right now, but we're fine.
Bianca: That's good to hear. We missed you.
Zach: I'm sorry I haven't called you. It's been real busy. Problems with business -- it's never enough hours in a day, right?
Bianca: I feel a little responsible for that.
Zach: You're not.
Bianca: I did ask you for help raising international funds for the Miranda Foundation. I didn't mean to add to your burden.
Zach: It's not a burden. I'll be out from under this very soon.
Bianca: It'll be great for things to be back to normal again. Are the kids upstairs?
Zach: They're upstairs. Go see them.
Bianca: Seriously, Zach, we thank you for coming to our rescue. The center took a big hit after that money scandal with David and Greenlee. You saved us.
Zach: We're family. I'm here.
Bartender: That be all?
Damon: Yes. Thank you.
Nick: Hey. You see me on TV? I was a big star. I made all then: Local stations. My testimony changed the whole Hayward murder trial.
Damon: Nick Pearson.
Tad: So what's the real malfunction here, Liza? That legal-wise, you and I are on either side of the fence?
Liza: No. It's because you and Jack sandbagged me with Nick Pearson, star witness.
Tad: Sandbag you?
Tad: Really? What were we supposed to do, just ignore the fact that he heard Ryan say somebody was going to die, just before David did?
Liza: You purposely hid this from me. Why'd you do that? Were you afraid I was gonna ask him too many questions?
Tad: Maybe. Or maybe it's something to the fact that of all the people around here interested in the truth, you don't seem to be one of them.
Jack: I'll see you inside.
Ryan: Hey. I hope your dad finally got through to you and convinced you that all of this, everything is just to get you a not-guilty verdict.
Greenlee: I didn't ask you to do this.
Ryan: This is not some noble act of sacrifice, Greenlee. I don't want to go to prison. Really, I don't, but there's a witness out there that heard me say that I was ready to kill David. I think that needs to get out there.
Bailiff: You promise to tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth, so help you God?
Ryan: I do.
Judge: You may be seated.
Jack: Mr. Lavery, it's safe to say that you and the defendant had a long history.
Ryan: Yes, we have.
Jack: How would you describe the relationship?
Ryan: That's not easy. Um, truthfully, our relationship has never really been that easy. No matter who we were with or what we were doing, we just -- we just always had a connection.
Jack: How did you and Greenlee meet?
Ryan: At WRCW.
Greenlee: Well, hello.
Greenlee: I'm Greenlee, the new intern. And you are --
Ryan: Ryan. Nice to meet you, Greenlee. That's a very unusual name.
Greenlee: I'm an unusual woman.
Ryan: The timing just wasn't ever right, at least not at the beginning.
Jack: But that did change?
Ryan: Yes, that changed. We even got married once. "Dynamite Kiddo."
Jack: I'm sorry. What was that?
Ryan: It was the ring I gave her. It was toy. It was a joke. I didn't really take the marriage very seriously at first. At least, not until I realized --
Jack: You realized what?
Ryan: That I was developing feelings that I never felt before. That what we had was more than just two people that clicked. It was -- it just kind of felt as if something was putting us together.
Jack: A year and a half ago, you thought Greenlee had died. How did you feel then?
Ryan: Like I'd lost part of myself.
Bartender: So you testified at the big trial, huh?
Nick: I didn't just testify, little lady. I was the main man. Want to see my interview on channel 7?
Colby: Don't you think your mom would want you to be happy on your birthday?
Asher: Like I said, it's not my day. It's hers.
Colby: But that's what I'm saying. You can honor her memory and celebrate it, as well.
Asher: When you say it, it almost makes sense.
Colby: Yeah. So we'll combine Halloween with your birthday. We'll hook up with Damon, and, oh, we'll get you a cake. What do you say?
Asher: I don't know. It's --
Colby: No? Well, Asher, you saved my life, so you owe me the right to pay you back.
Asher: Thanks for the offer, but, you know, not this year.
Colby: Why not? It's -- why?
Asher: I can't explain it really. But next year everything could change, and, in fact, and I'm counting on it.
Caleb: Let's focus on how much Junior has made off with nanotech, shall we?
Erica: I think that's a good idea. But what if J.R. focuses on you, Caleb? What if he decides to even fabricate something about your past? Some dirt, something?
Caleb: Like what?
Erica: I don't know. Maybe Sonia?
Caleb: Maybe you have to trust me.
Erica: Caleb, how could I possibly trust you? You clearly are withholding some information.
Caleb: Erica, not everything's about business. Some things are private.
Zach: Thanks for staying on top of it, Counselor.
Lawyer: It's not gonna be easy. These guys play rough.
Zach: I know. We'll be in touch. Hey.
Kendall: Hi. Excuse me. Everything ok?
Zach: Everything's great. How's your mom?
Kendall: She's good.
Bianca: It's so good to have all of you back home again. I wanted to talk to you about something. I'm thinking about having a Halloween party, just a little something for the kids. You guys up for it?
Kendall: Yeah. Yeah. Sure.
Bianca: Great. Thanks for the talk. It's so good to have you back here. I will call you later.
Kendall: Yes, yes.
Kendall: So what were you two talking about?
Zach: We talked about the Miranda Center, how it took a big hit once your friend Greenlee was done with it. And she wants me to help rebuild and maybe raise some funds.
Kendall: So you're doing that?
Zach: Yeah. But you know what I was thinking? Remember when we traveled, and we saw all those amazing places? We saw a lot of suffering, too. People were hungry, starving, needed medical attention, and I thought maybe we could be the person or the people that can help those people. Help find doctors and experts and just do what we can, you know?
Kendall: Yeah. Zach, where is this all coming from?
Zach: I don't know. I just feel I haven't always been nice to people. I've hurt some people, and maybe I can tip the scales the right way for once.
Kendall: Ok. And casino meeting?
Zach: It was good. Very good. We need to focus on the Miranda Center, maybe have a fundraiser. I talked to Bianca about doing something. What?
Kendall: Stop doing that, please. Stop changing the subject every time I try to talk to you about something important, like the sale of your casinos.
Zach: I told you I got it handled. Didn't I just say that?
Kendall: Yes, you said you had it handled on your own, but you're doing it without me. That wasn't part of our deal. If we're gonna work on changing our lives together, I have to be your partner in this, your equal partner. But I can't do that if you keep shutting me out.
Zach: These are very dangerous people, Kendall.
Kendall: Then let me help you fight them.
Zach: It's out of the question.
Zach: Why? Because some things can't be fixed by you, Kendall! Some things in this life need to be fixed by somebody else, like this -- my problem! Or Hayward -- somebody else's problem!
Kendall: Ok. I thought that the reason that you stayed away was because of the whole issue with the casino.
Zach: It was.
Kendall: No, it wasn't, obviously. It was this. You're still angry at me for helping Ryan and Greenlee, aren't you? Ok. So that's it? We're done talking?
Zach: Done talking? We're never done talking. That's all we did for a year -- during dinner, in walks, in bed -- talk about how this relationship almost broke because of your behavior. And you come back here and you jump right back into it.
Kendall: I was helping two friends who desperately needed it.
Zach: They will always desperately need it, always! But it's our relationship you're putting on the line, not theirs.
Kendall: Isn't that exactly what you're doing right now? Or is this whole business with the casinos just another excuse to push me away?
Zach: No. It's very real.
Kendall: Ok. I'm having a hard time believing that right now.
Zach: Why? Because I don't want you involved in it?
Kendall: I am involved, Zach! Ok? I'm involved! All right. Sometimes I jump in headfirst without thinking, but you know what? You have a problem, too, and that's thinking you can solve everything by yourself. We're a couple. Ok? We're a couple, so it's time to start acting like it.
Zach: Fine. Fine.
Kendall: Zach, I'm serious.
Zach: I know! I heard you!
Zach: You're right!
Kendall: I am?
Erica: Have you even heard a word I said? Caleb, is everything all right?
Caleb: Yeah. Uh, I have to be someplace. We'll get back to this.
Jack: Mr. Lavery, let's go back a few months. Greenlee had completed her convalescence, she had returned to Pine Valley and was about to marry the man who saved her life, Dr. David Hayward. What was your reaction to that?
Ryan: I thought it was a terrible mistake.
Jack: And when she went through with the marriage, how did that make you feel?
Ryan: Empty. Lost. It was like letting her go all over again.
Jack: Because you still loved her?
Liza: Objection! Your honor, Ryan Lavery's feelings about the defendant are irrelevant.
Jack: The D.A. didn't have any objections to questions like this when Madison North was on the stand. In fact, I believe she made the point that the relationship between Ryan Lavery and the defendant was relevant to this case, your honor.
Judge: I'll allow it. Overruled. You may continue, Mr. Montgomery.
Jack: Thank you, your honor. So once again, Mr. Lavery, you were in love with my client?
Jack: When you learned that she was alive?
Ryan: It felt like I had been sort of given a second chance to make things right with her.
Ryan's voice: I want you to be happy. I want that. But you know that I'm not gonna give up hope. I know that what we have, what we still have, is right there, and it's waiting for us. And I know deep down in my bones that we will find it again.
Greenlee: So you're gonna leave me alone? You don't want anything from me?
Ryan: I want everything for you. I just got to believe that one day you'll see that I'm right. I just got to hope and believe, and I'll just wait. You said that you love me, right? So I'm here. I'm not going anywhere. I don't care how long it takes. It could be a week. It could be a month. It could be a year. It doesn't matter. I will wait for you to realize what I already know, and that is -- that you and I are meant to be together.
Jack: So your goal all along was to continue to fight for her?
Ryan: I -- yeah. It didn't feel like I had any choice.
Jack: Let's move on to your relationship with the deceased, David Hayward. You didn't like him very much, did you?
Ryan: No, I did not like him very much. In fact, that's quite an understatement.
Jack: What were your reasons?
Ryan: He was a guy who took whatever he wanted, didn't matter who it'd hurt.
Jack: And did that include my client?
Jack: How did you feel about that?
Ryan: Furious. Very protective.
Jack: Did you and Dr. Hayward discuss his relationship with my client?
Ryan: Yes. Many times. Mostly me going to him and telling him to stay away from her.
Jack: And when my client eventually felt trapped in this relationship, did she turn to you for help?
Ryan: No. She didn't want me involved.
Jack: But you were already involved.
Ryan: Yes. She said that she didn't need me, but I wasn't just gonna let her suffer.
Jack: So you helped her even though she told you not to?
Ryan: I wasn't gonna let David ruin her life. After everything that we'd been through, what was I supposed to do?
Kendall: Is this a trick? Are you just saying that so I'll shut up?
Zach: Ha! No, it's not a trick. We should do things together. You're right. I want my boys growing up knowing that their parents do everything together.
Kendall: We're a team. We're a team.
Zach: I'm sorry.
Kendall: It's all right.
Zach: The boys are upstairs playing cowboys with the nanny.
Zach: Being a team, I thought maybe we could do the same.
Kendall: You want to play cowboy? Ok. I like that idea. I'm gonna get my boots. I'm gonna get your cool hat, too.
Zach: Sounds good.
Kendall: Ok. You there.
Caleb: Who the hell planted this? Junior? Asher? I'll be damned if I'm gonna let them use Sonia against me. Happy Halloween.
Jack: Now comes the night of the party, Mr. Lavery. What were you thinking?
Ryan: That I had to get Greenlee away from David. That he was worse for her than I'd even predicted.
Jack: How so?
Ryan: He told me that he was gonna take her away and that they were never coming back.
Jack: And what happened then?
Ryan: I couldn't let that happen.
Jack: Because you never stopped loving her.
Jack: Even though she was married? Even though she told you that she didn't love you, that she didn't want your help.
Ryan: She needed me, and I would do absolutely anything for her.
Jack: Because you realized that if she got on the plane, you might never see her again.
Jack: So you had to do something. You had to stop him.
Liza: Objection, your honor!
Jack: You fought with Dr. Hayward that night, didn't you?
Jack: What happened after the fight?
Ryan: I don't remember.
Jack: You don't remember?
Ryan: No. I had a trauma, and a large part of the night is just a blank.
Jack: So it's conceivable that during this blank time --
Liza: Objection, your honor! Ryan Lavery is not on trial.
Jack: Withdrawn. No further questions.
Judge: It's getting late, and I'm hungry. So, Ms. Colby, you can begin your cross-examination after lunch.
Bailiff: All rise!
Liza: Where have you been?
Damon: Weird thing. I saw Nick Pearson at ConFusion, Jackson's big surprise witness.
Liza: Yeah? So?
Damon: He was talking smack about what a big celebrity he is now, hitting on the bartender. But isn't this the same guy who wanted to "lay low" and not testify, because it would wreck his marriage?
Liza: Yeah, that's what he said, didn't he?
Damon: Yeah. Guess not anymore. And he seemed real happy about the fact that Ryan was gonna get nailed. Strange, right?
Greenlee: I wish you'd gotten me out of here today.
Jack: I'm glad I didn't because you needed to hear that.
Ryan: Madison? Hey. I am so sorry that you had to hear that.
Madison: Why? It was the truth, right?
Ryan: Yes. But I swear to you I didn't know until I was saying it out loud.
Madison: What are we doing, Ryan?
Ryan: Madison, I --
Madison: No, just -- you don't have to say it. We're over. You and I are finished.
