Greenlee: You're kidding, right? You would never launch an attack on Ryan like that.
Jack: It's not an attack on Ryan, Greenlee. It's a way to create reasonable doubt.
Greenlee: By pointing the finger at him?
Jack: In a tactical sense, in a strategic way, yes, I guess that's what you would call it. Look, he's not on trial. He'll be fine.
Greenlee: No, he won't!
Jack: I'm doing my best to keep you out of prison. I would appreciate it if you wouldn't let your feelings for Ryan get in the way of that.
Caleb: I need your help, Dorothy. Cat got your tongue?
Erica: Well, I am just shocked to hear those words come out of your mouth.
Caleb: Then please don't make me say them again.
Erica: You're certainly gonna have to say a lot more than that. If I agree to partner with you on this, you're gonna have to make it worth my while. We both know how valuable I am to Cortlandt. So if you want me, pitch me. Make it good.
Annie: Get away from me.
J.R.: No. We have to figure this out. We have to find out what Caleb and Erica know.
Annie: How do I always end up getting stuck with you?
J.R.: Stop acting like you don't have a choice. You always have a choice!
Annie: Don't tell me about choices, J.R.! I know what I have done. I know I let you get to me, how I let everything that matters to me go just so I could hop in bed with you? God, it's --
Scott: Don't worry. At least this time you both have your clothes on.
J.R.: Ok. I realize that you're angry. We are all angry, but we have to put that aside for now because something happened. Something big has happened. We have to work together to deal with it.
Scott: Just like old times. Right, cuz?
J.R.: Come on. This is serious. Tell him. Annie?
Annie: Erica stopped by earlier. At first, she acted all friendly, and then she dropped the bomb.
J.R.: Caleb overheard.
Annie: He heard J.R. saying that you stole from a dead man, and they know that it was Palmer.
J.R.: Do you hear what she said?
Scott: I need cash.
J.R.: What? Are you fleeing the country?
Scott: No. That would make things way too easy for you.
Annie: It's also possible that they know what was stolen -- the nanotechnology. We don't know for sure, but --
J.R.: That's got to be a bluff. They only know one little part and that's it.
Annie: Yeah. J.R. could be right.
J.R.: But we can contain it. We just have to keep in mind that we are the only ones who know what really happened.
Scott: Everyone should know what happened.
Annie: What? What are you talking about?
J.R.: He's talking about us. Scott, move on. Look, everything is at stake right now -- Chandler Enterprises, this family. Annie and I, we both know that. Do you?
Caleb: Pitch you? Oh, what? Now I've got to beg?
Erica: Talent like mine is in very high demand. Certainly I have to know that I'd be appreciated.
Caleb: Ok. How about a dozen red roses on your desk every morning? How's that?
Erica: Oh, hardly. No. I am about to take time away from planning a wedding to a man who's made me blissfully happy for months now. If you expect me to take time away from that, time away from him, I need to know I'm appreciated.
Caleb: Why don't you just tell me what you want?
Erica: For starters, I want a peaceful work environment.
Caleb: I'll leave my shotgun at home.
Erica: I need to know that we are going to have a collaborative process, that we are going to discuss ideas and move ahead on them together as a team.
Caleb: Anything else?
Erica: Yes. I really need to know what I'm getting into with you.
Erica: I know you were a brilliant lawyer, and you certainly look the part now, but you've been out of the game for a long time.
Caleb: I'm back in it now.
Erica: And you're not going anywhere? When things get tough, you're not suddenly gonna hear the call of the mountains?
Caleb: This is my calling. Do we have a deal?
Erica: Where do I sign?
Caleb: Right there. Nah. Put it there, for real. Go on.
Erica: Ok. Ok. Back to business now. It's time to push the Chandlers.
Caleb: Junior's the one we got to go after.
Erica: He's not gonna roll over.
Caleb: I'll roll him over.
Erica: We can get to J.R., but we have to do that by getting to the people around him -- his employees, his underlings, a weak link. Do you know anyone like that?
Caleb: There's this kid Asher that Junior hired. He came here out of the pretense of helping Miranda with her computer.
Erica: He used Miranda?
Caleb: Yeah. A couple of weeks ago. Hit me over the head, knocked me out.
Erica: He attacked you?
Erica: If this Asher person is as deep inside Chandler corporation as you say, he may just be the target, and I bet we can turn him.
Asher's voice: "Way back when Caleb had to make choices, I didn't agree with most of them. I still don't. But it's time you discovered where you come from. One day you'll find yourself reunited with the family you lost."
Kendall: Hi. I'll be out of your way in a minute. How many T-shirts can one little boy have?
Ryan: That's a real question? I think the answer is thousands, because his mom can't walk by a store without buying at least six.
Madison: Is something wrong, aside from Spike's overabundance of wardrobe choices?
Kendall: I just walked out of a meeting with our PR department -- actually, stormed out is more like it.
Madison: What's going on?
Kendall: Well, uh, I got this -- tons of e-mails from news outlets from all over the world. Requests for interviews -- they want to do a story on Fusion.
Madison: And not about our latest line of lipstick?
Ryan: Not when one of the co-owners is on trial for murder. Right?
Kendall: Yeah. Somebody actually told me today that they think Greenlee should step down temporarily. I almost fired her right on the spot.
Ryan: You should've fired her. Fusion is Greenlee's baby.
Madison: Which is one of the reasons why it's so successful.
Kendall: Right. Yes, but this scandal could hurt business. I remember when everyone thought my mother was stealing from a charity, the S.E.C. shut us down.
Madison: If we could get through that and so much more, we can come back again.
Kendall: But how do I convince my staff? They're all worried about losing their jobs.
Ryan: You just tell all of them that Greenlee is innocent.
Kendall: Why do you sound so confident?
Ryan: Because she's got Jackson. Jackson is gonna clear her. And then after that, we're all good.
Greenlee: Ryan is free to live his life, to be with his kids. Don't ruin that.
Jack: You know we're running out of time? And we're running out of options. You have a substantial case against you, Greenlee.
Greenlee: I believe in you. I believe that you can get me off without dragging Ryan into this.
Jack: That's my job, isn't it? As your lawyer, as your father, I promise you I'm not gonna lose you again.
Greenlee: I'm innocent. You can prove it.
Jack: Not if you tie my hands.
Greenlee: Everyone has forgotten about Ryan as a suspect. Don't remind them.
Jack: You think Liza's forgotten about Ryan as a suspect?
Greenlee: I don't care about Liza.
Jack: Well, maybe, Greenlee, you'll care about this.
Greenlee: I guess I'd think this of myself, too.
Jack: Honey, don't start that. These people are just trying to sell papers.
Greenlee: I married David. Next thing you know, he's dead, and I'm doing everything I can to keep Ryan safe.
Jack: Look, I know it's a great deal more complicated than that.
Greenlee: Maybe I should just call the papers and hold a big press conference.
Jack: I wouldn't advise that.
Greenlee: They all have their theories. They're all whispering. Maybe I should just get in their faces and say what I want to say.
Jack: And what would that be?
Greenlee: That I hate this. That I hate that David is dead, and I had a life with Ryan that was ripped away from me and a life with David that could never be what he wanted it to be. That David was a tortured man, he couldn't help but self-destruct. And despite everything he did, I miss him. I miss him almost as much as the life I had with Ryan. It's trash. It's all trash.
Kendall: Jackson will do everything he can to get Greenlee acquitted, but come on. A trial? A trial is a gamble. 12 strangers deciding your fate?
Ryan: Greenlee did not kill David, so --
Kendall: Well, don't you wonder who did?
Ryan: Right now I think we should just focus on clearing Greenlee first.
Kendall: Ok. You know what? The boys are waiting for me, so this PR mess is gonna have to wait. I've got to do this.
Kendall: The shoe designer?
Madison: Yeah. A few months back, I read this article about him, and I don't really remember all the details. But the company was doing great, when all of a sudden this horrible rumor surfaced that could have ruined them. They came up with some kind of brilliant strategy to beat the gossip machine at its own game. I could do a little bit of research, talk to PR, if it's ok with you.
Kendall: Yes. Yes, it is more than ok. Yes. Thank you, Madison. Please, just let me know what you come up with.
Madison: I will. Ok. I'll see you later.
Ryan: Look out for that. I got it. Ok. See you later.
Kendall: Wow. She is really something.
Ryan: She is something. She's pretty amazing for a lot of reasons, one of which, that she understands I got to see this through with Greenlee. I got to help her get through this. It hasn't been easy. We all want it over.
Kendall: And if Greenlee is cleared, will it be easier for you or harder?
Erica: Maybe this spy of J.R.'s, this Asher person, has even done other dirty work for J.R., possibly even involving that theft. It's worth pursuing. I will talk to him.
Messenger: Caleb Cortlandt?
Caleb: That's me.
Messenger: Sign here.
Caleb: What have we got here? Thank you.
Messenger: Have a good day.
Caleb: You, too.
Erica: What is it?
Caleb: Oh, yes. This is the perfect excuse for me to pay Junior a visit.
Colby: What's going on? Scott, are you ok?
Scott: Yeah. I'm fine. Hmm. How could I not be? I'm surrounded by my loving family. You're on your own.
Annie: No, please.
J.R.: You can't just walk out. This is everything.
Scott: Yes, it was.
Ryan: Look, as soon as this trial is over with, there's gonna be nothing to keep Greenlee and me in each other's orbits anymore.
Kendall: Ok. Well, are you sure about that?
Ryan: Yes, I am sure about -- ok. Of course, we're gonna see each other because we're friends, but it's not gonna be like this anymore. It can't be this intense anymore. It won't be.
Kendall: All right, but you and Greenlee just casually bumping into each other at restaurants -- Ryan, that's not gonna happen. This is you and Greenlee we're talking about.
Ryan: Do you realize that when she first came back to Pine Valley, that I tried everything in my power to convince her that we belong together? Everything, and nothing worked.
Kendall: Ok. Well, a lot has happened since then.
Ryan: Mm-hmm. Including Madison.
Kendall: Ok. So now you just forget about Greenlee?
Ryan: No, I don't forget about Greenlee. I could never forget about Greenlee -- that's the point -- but it just doesn't work. It doesn't. It can't. Somebody always gets hurt. Something always goes wrong. It's not right, Kendall, and Madison is right. At least, you know, I'm hoping that it's gonna be right.
Kendall: But it's so new, Ryan.
Ryan: I know it's new. It's great. It's new. It's exciting. I don't think I've ever been in a relationship that has been this easy and this sort of smooth and fun, and no drama, no roller coaster ride -- that's exhausting. This I like. I like this. Ok? I like Madison a lot. So when the trial is over, then, you know, Greenlee and I are gonna go our separate ways. That's it. That's what has to be. That's what she wants. That's what I want. So did you ask me this because you're actually curious or because you're taking sides?
Kendall: No, no, I'm not taking any sides. I just want you to be happy -- both of you.
Greenlee: Aren't you proud your daughter made the front page?
Jack: I showed it to you so that you would know what the media is saying about you. That's important. Greenlee, elsewhere in that rag, they call you "The Green Widow," say you're after David's money.
Greenlee: I have my own money.
Jack: I know that, and you know that, but these papers aren't in the business of telling the truth. They're in the business of selling papers, and the story that's got these papers flying off the rack right now is you and Ryan.
Greenlee: There is no "me and Ryan."
Jack: There are a lot of potential jurors out there who think there is. A lot of people haven't forgotten Ryan at all, and they think he just may be the man who loved you so much that he would kill for you.
Greenlee: I'm done listening to this.
Jack: You're trying very hard to keep Ryan out of a picture he's already in. You should be smart. Use this to our advantage.
Greenlee: This conversation is over. I told you what I want. Respect that. But I do need your advice on something.
Jack: And what would that be?
Greenlee: If you were an accused murderer hiding from the media, where would you sleep tonight?
Jack: I have an answer for that. I don't think you're going to like it very much.
Asher: Sorry. I didn't even see you there.
Erica: It's ok. But I've seen you.
Asher: I think I'd remember seeing Erica Kane.
Erica: No, I mean at Wildwind. Caleb Cortlandt was having an argument with somebody, and I just saw him for a split second as he ran away. But that was you, wasn't it? What's your name?
Erica: Asher? Oh, I love that name. That's like my favorite asscher-cut diamond. I'll remember that name. So I guess I came to your rescue when I drove up to Wildwind in my car?
Asher: I actually got to go.
Erica: Oh, please. Not so fast. What's your story? Do you have a problem with Caleb Cortlandt?
Asher: I actually work for his competitor.
Erica: J.R. Chandler?
Asher: Yeah. I started a few weeks ago.
Erica: Then you work for my competitor, too, because Caleb Cortlandt and I are partners.
Asher: That's too bad for you because your partner is one phony son of a bitch.
Colby: What were you guys talking about?
J.R.: The less you know the better.
Colby: J.R.? You wanted me to work for this company. If something's going on, I'm a part of it.
J.R.: Not if I can help it.
Colby: I am so mad at you for letting her destroy this family.
J.R.: Colby --
Annie: No. Let her finish.
Colby: But I love you, and I love this family, and I don't want it to fall apart. So if something is wrong, maybe I can help.
J.R.: This is about business, not other stuff.
Colby: No. You're wrong. It's all about "other stuff" because look at her. She is in the middle of it again. She has ruined and destroyed everything!
J.R.: No! Nothing is ruined yet! I have phone calls to make.
Annie: Don't bother. There's nothing you can say that's gonna make me feel any worse than I already do.
Colby: But I would really like to give it a shot.
J.R.'s voice: Chandler is my birthright. So why don't you go back doing what you're good at -- being Stuart's son, a nice guy with all the nice, shiny goals?
Annie: I promise to be by your side, to be your partner and your lover and your best friend. No more lies. Yes, you can trust me, too.
Stuart's voice: Always been proud of you, and I always will be.
Scott: Dad? How can you be proud of me after what I've done? I'm so sorry, Dad.
Stuart's voice: I've been watching Adam for years, and J.R. too, and when it comes to that company, they're mean. I mean, really mean.
Scott's voice: Trust me, ok? No way am I gonna change. But if I get this gig, Chandler Enterprises will. Right now the Chandler name represents greed, the bottom line. I want it to represent us, what we stand for.
Stuart: Can you really do that?
Scott: And I will. Not just for me, but for you, too.
Stuart: Ha ha ha!
Scott: Not just for me.
Colby: I'm really sick of your act -- poor, pathetic Annie, always a victim. I didn't buy it then, and I still don't.
Annie: I'm not looking for sympathy here.
Colby: Good, because you're not gonna get it from me.
Annie: I have no one to blame but myself, and I will for the rest of my life, but I want you to understand something. My daughter is my priority. She is an innocent little girl, and I don't want her getting hurt in all of this. I don't want her getting confused or scared. So attack me all you want, but just remember I have a daughter to protect.
Colby: That's really nice, but I don't really know why you're telling me this. I mean, shouldn't you tell this crap to Scott, or is it J.R.?
Annie: Scott's my husband, and I have broken his heart.
Colby: Let's just hope he has the sense to throw you out and tell you to never come back.
J.R.: I got it. I got it.
Colby: I'm gonna go upstairs.
Caleb: Special delivery.
J.R.: I don't got time for your games, Caleb.
Caleb: Neither do I. I filed a motion giving Marissa full custody of A.J., pending the settlement of your divorce, and it's been granted.
Erica: That sounds personal.
Asher: Who said it's personal?
Erica: Well, the words that just came out of your mouth and the look in your eyes, I'm gonna guess that J.R. Chandler is really feeding you a lot of lies to get you to hate Caleb. Because there's really a lot about that man that you don't know.
Asher: Is that right?
Erica: I'll be honest with you. I didn't get along with him either, not to begin with. He's gruff and he's stubborn, but he has a heart, and his priority is really his family.
Asher: And how would you know that?
Erica: Well, his uncle Palmer Cortlandt, recently passed away and asked Caleb if he would fulfill his last wishes here in Pine Valley. Now, Caleb could've walked away, but he didn't. He stayed because he understands the value of family loyalty.
Asher: Why are we talking about this guy?
Erica: Look, I've known J.R. Chandler for a very, very long time, and I know that he doesn't trust most people very easily. So if he has taken you into his confidence, he must really think there's something very special about you.
Asher: Right place, right time -- pretty much it.
Erica: Oh, no. I'm sure there's much more to it than that. I mean it. I can see you're a very smart young man. I'm sure you're smart enough to recognize a good deal when you see one. Despite the things that J.R. has been telling you, please believe me. J.R. is the bad guy here, not Caleb.
Asher: Back to him again.
Erica: The Chandlers stole things that don't belong to them. So you could continue working for the thieves, end up in jail yourself. Or if you brought us information, any information at all, you'd find yourself very handsomely rewarded.
Asher: Working for Caleb? Yeah. No reward is worth that.
Erica: Jack? Jack, are you home? I've had the most exhausting day.
Greenlee: Sounds like someone needs a hug.
Jack: Greenlee, Greenlee, Greenlee. Be nice, huh?
Erica: Did someone forget to tell me that we are having a guest tonight?
Greenlee: It wasn't my idea.
Erica: And yet you went right for the good sheets.
Greenlee: I could put them back. We could have a girls' night in your room.
Erica: Listen, I have already dealt with one troublemaker today. This really is all that I can take.
Greenlee: I told you this was a mistake.
Jack: It doesn't have to be a mistake. I just thought that --
Erica: You just thought that you would like to protect your daughter from the media, so whose building has better security than mine?
Jack: Exactly right, sweetheart. I wasn't going to spring it on you. I was about to call.
Erica: Look, Greenlee, am I right in assuming that you hate being here as much as I hate having you?
Greenlee: Actually, I owe you an apology.
Erica: Well. Maybe we should alert the media.
Greenlee: Give me a break. I'm trying. You know what? This is a bad idea. I'll just go find someplace else to crash.
Jack: No, no, no.
Erica: No, no. Stay. Apparently, this is very important to your father, which makes it then sort of important to me.
Greenlee: "Sort of"?
Erica: Give me a break. I'm trying.
Jack: Ok. So can I leave you two ladies alone long enough to make a phone call, do you suppose?
Greenlee and Erica: Hurry.
[Jack drops phone]
Greenlee: Oh, I'll get it.
Greenlee: You're calling Ryan? I told you to keep him out of this. You were calling him behind my back?
Erica: Would someone please fill me in?
Greenlee: Either my lawyer isn't listening or my father isn't. One way or another, it ends now. Let's go.
Colby: What are you doing here?
Asher: Your maid let me in the back way.
Colby: Just because you work for J.R. doesn't mean you can just show up here and hang out in my room and whatever -- what's your problem?
Asher: My boys were just put in a vice by Erica Kane.
Colby: Erica? Why?
Asher: Who knows? She's tough, though. Got all up in my face trying to convince me that something was true when I know that it's not.
Colby: Convince you of what?
Asher: I don't even remember. It's just crazy to have this person you see on TV suddenly turning the screws on you.
Colby: Maybe she can come do the same thing to J.R.
Asher: You're in a good mood. What's up? More family stuff?
Colby: Yeah. Just when I thought things couldn't get worse -- surprise -- they do. I mean, how is that even possible?
Asher: I'm sorry things are rough right now, but maybe it's as bad as it gets. It'll get better.
Colby: The only way it can get better is if my dad came back home for good. You know, there's something about having your dad around that -- I'm sorry. You lost your dad when you were young, right?
Asher: Yeah. No, I'm over it. Trust me.
Colby: Really? You can just get over something like that?
Asher: You find ways.
Colby: I miss my dad so much. You must miss your dad. Do you remember anything about him?
Asher: Not really.
Colby: Really? You never heard stories about him like -- maybe like what he was like?
Asher: What difference would it make? He's not here anymore.
Colby: Do you ever, I don't know, talk to him? Like, if he was here right now, what would you say to him?
J.R.: No judge would ever sign off on this.
Caleb: Already has. Actually, you made it easy. All I had to do was prove how hazardous an environment this was.
J.R.: And how would you do that?
Caleb: With photographs of this very room after -- why, after your party.
J.R.: Marissa -- she took pictures. I had nothing to do with that party.
Caleb: No, but if I'm not mistaken, this is your home? This is the home that A.J. would be brought up in? Is that right? The one that looked like a war zone in these photographs --
J.R.: That's a load of crap, and you know it.
Caleb: Well, fortunately for your son, the judge decided that that's an unfit place for your son to grow up.
J.R.: You'll never get away with this.
Annie: J.R. loves A.J. He's a wonderful father.
Caleb: Ooh. And you could be a character witness at his trial. Nah. It's a bad idea.
J.R.: You wasted your time. You could've just had a messenger bring it over.
Caleb: And miss the look on your face?
J.R.: Get out of my house. No one will ever take my son from me.
Caleb: Isn't it a bitch when somebody takes away something that belongs to you?
J.R.: You sent Erica over here to try to get something out of Annie, but there was nothing to get. You might think that you're on to some hot little secret to take back, Cortlandt, but I got news for you. I bought that company from you fair and square. I own you.
Caleb: You own me? That's a laugh.
Scott: Yeah, I wouldn't be so sure about that.
Jack: Sorry to just drop by like this.
Greenlee: We need to deal with this right now so there's no confusion.
Ryan: ConFusion over what?
Greenlee: My father's plan for my defense. He wants to create reasonable doubt by serving you up to the jury, planting it in their minds that you might've killed David.
Greenlee: I tried to talk him out of it, but he won't listen to me. And I just caught him trying to call you behind my back. So let's just be clear. This is not what I want. Making you look guilty -- that is his strategy.
Ryan: No, Greenlee, it's mine. It was my idea. I proposed it to Jack.
Kendall: What? You're gonna go after the father of my child?
Jack: Can we just not worry about me for a second? This is the best way to help you, Greenlee.
Greenlee: Why isn't anyone listening to me? I'm the defendant. You work for me. This is not going to happen.
Ryan: I want to help you. This is the best chance I have to do that. Ok? We can put an end to all of this. Why are you even fighting this?
Greenlee: Are you seriously asking me that?
Jack: Look, I'm telling you this will work.
Greenlee: Go ahead. Do it. I'll fire you.
Ryan: No, Greenlee, you won't. Look, you're trying to help me, and I appreciate that. I really do. I'm serious. But firing your attorney a day before the trial? That's not a good idea. That's not smart. Ok? Jackson, if you put me on the stand, I will be your dream witness.
Greenlee: No, I came over here to kill this stupid idea. You know what happens if this turns back on you? Your kids suffer. Kendall hates me forever. I'm not living with that. Kendall, help me out.
Kendall: Greenlee, this is not my call to make.
Ryan: Just think about how sweet it is when you hear the words "not guilty." It'll be done. Ok? There's no reason to fight this. Really.
Jack: Hey, we should go.
Ryan: I think that went well.
Greenlee: I meant what I said. Do not do this.
Jack: Look, I have some things to do. Why don't I put you in a cab, I'll let Erica know you're on your way, and we'll go over all of this tomorrow morning, all right?
Greenlee: Why bother? My opinion obviously means nothing.
Erica: Caleb, I just wanted you to know that I decided to disregard your advice about talking to J.R.'s employees. Asher is a very intense young man, and I think that there's a lot more to him than either one of us knows.
Colby: So --
Asher: I'm thinking. Let's see. What would I say to my dad? Maybe, "Where the hell have you been all my life?"
Colby: That's not funny.
Asher: Wasn't meant to be.
Colby: Look, if this is weird for you, we don't have to talk about it.
Asher: Honestly, I wouldn't know what to say to him.
Colby: Well, maybe you don't know what you would say to your dad, but I think I know what your dad would say to you. He would say, "I'm really proud of you."
Asher: Proud of me? For what?
Colby: For one thing, you saved my life.
Scott: You saved me a trip to Wildwind. It's time we talked.
J.R.: Whatever it is, it can wait.
Annie: Where did you go before? Can we just go in the study and talk, please?
Scott: Nothing ever changes around here. You notice that? The lies and the backstabbing -- it's different players, but it's always the same game. And you and me -- we were supposed to be better. I really thought we had a chance, too, but none of us will ever have a chance as long as this thing stays buried.
Scott: A crime was committed, and we covered it up.
Caleb: What crime?
Scott: Palmer and what was stolen from him. I think it's time I came clean.
