Caleb: Now, I'm not gonna keep you people any longer. You've listened to me long enough, but before I get off my soapbox here, I just want to publicly honor a request that my Uncle Pete made. I'm gonna change my name to Cortland. From now on, I am Caleb Cortland.

[Crowd gasps as David stumbles in; people scream as he goes over a railing and falls down at Caleb's feet]

Liza: Oh, my --

Caleb: Somebody call 911.

Krystal: Yes. Yes. I need an ambulance right away at the Pine Valley Yacht Club.

Liza: David. David.

Greenlee: What are you doing? Get off of me.

Kendall: Greenlee, wait a minute. Stop.

Greenlee: What happened to him?

Ryan: [Stumbles outside David's room with a bleeding cheek, cut right hand, and humungous headache] Ah! Ah!

Liza: Come on. Wake up.

Kendall: Greenlee --

Greenlee: What?

Kendall: You just said that we need to protect Ryan from David. What did you mean?

Greenlee: Why isn't he moving?

Jesse: Somebody collapsed?

Tad: Not just somebody.

Jesse: What the hell happened to him?

Tad: No idea.

Jesse: Baby, I'm gonna have to take care of this, ok?

Angie: Take care of what? What's going on?

Tad: It's Hayward, baby. He's hurt, and he's not moving.

Jesse: Tad, would you take --

Tad: Yeah, yeah, yeah. Go ahead. Do your thing.

Angie: Is David alive?

Tad: I don't know yet.

Jesse: Does he have a pulse?

Liza: I'm not feeling one.

Jesse: What happened?

Caleb: Don't know.

Jesse: Jake! Frankie!

Angie: Maybe there's something --

Tad: No, no, no. That's ok. Jake is here.

Amanda: Oh, my God, David.

Jake: David? David?

Kendall: Where is Ryan? Where is he?

Greenlee: I can't do this right now.

Jake: David?

Ryan: [Still stumbles in the hallway] Ah --

Jake: Come on, David.

Asher: That was the guy in the fight, right?

Colby: Yeah.

Jake: [Grunts as he performs chest compressions] Come on.

Greenlee: Jake --

Jesse: Let him work, Greenlee.

Jake: Come on, David.

Greenlee: Jake --

Jake: He's gone.

[Greenlee exhales]

[Ryan exhales]

Kendall: Ryan.

Jake: Greenlee.

Greenlee: I'm -- what happened? How did --

Jake: I don't know. It looks like he had a lot of trauma, blow to the head and face. There's no way of knowing. I mean, we'd have to wait and see.

Greenlee: You think someone killed David?

Jake: I don't know. Anything is possible. Need a glass of water or something?

Greenlee: I'm not leaving him.

Jesse: You got her?

Jake: Yeah.

Jesse: All right, everybody, listen up. I know you didn't factor this into your evening, but as of right now, this place is officially a crime scene, which means you're all witnesses, which also means I'm gonna have to ask you all to stay here, answer questions about what you might have seen tonight, all right?

[Crowd murmurs]

Jesse: Yeah. This is Hubbard. I'm gonna need some backup here.

Kendall: What happened to you?

Ryan: I don't know. I don't know.

Kendall: Ok. What do you mean, you don't know? Ryan, your face. You're bleeding.

Ryan: Ok. Just -- ok. Just give me a second, please. Oh! Ah! I must've just -- I must've hit my head or something.

Kendall: On what? Ryan, did someone do this to you?

Ryan: I don't know. I don't know. I don't remember.

Amanda: Why don't we go sit? Greenlee, you've had a major shock. Please just come with me.

Greenlee: No.

Amanda: Ok. Then we'll stay right here.

Krystal: Oh --

Caleb: Your daughter.

Krystal: She's already lost two parents and a marriage. I don't know how Marissa is gonna handle this.

Caleb: She will because she has to.

Krystal: It's just not fair.

Caleb: Were they close?

Krystal: Well, he tried. He really did try. David wanted to be a good father. He just didn't know how.

Colby: This is insane.

Asher: Yeah, totally.

Colby: What are we gonna say? The cops are on their way, and the chief of police, he's gonna start questioning us.

Asher: And?

Colby: And what are we gonna say?

Asher: It's not like we saw much. We took off before those dudes got really ugly.

Colby: And one of those dudes is dead, and the other is Ryan Lavery. He's a good guy. He's Emma's dad, and --

Asher: And?

Colby: He was engaged to her.

Asher: What does that have to do with us?

Colby: Nothing. Nothing. I just don't want to get Ryan in trouble.

[Sirens approaching]

Asher: Then don't.

Liza: Mayor, I'm so glad you called. Yes. I am. I'm ready to assume my duties as district attorney. Mayor, I'm sorry to interrupt, but there's something I need to tell you. It's about our friend David Hayward.

[Police officers arrive]

Jesse: Baby, I'm sorry I had to leave you like that.

Angie: He's really dead.

Jesse: He's really dead.

Angie: David is dead. I never thought I'd say those words. I mean, it just doesn't even seem real.

Jesse: Who are you telling? Listen. You need to go home.

Tad: I'll take --

Angie: No. No. No. Think how that would look. Everyone is staying for questioning, and your wife and your best friend are given a pass? I'm staying right here.

Jesse: You got her?

Tad: You didn't even have to ask, man.

Jesse: All right. If you need me --

Angie: Absolutely.

Jesse: All right. All right, everybody. The sooner we get this started, the sooner we can get you home. More officers will be here shortly, all right?

Amanda: Hey, what's wrong?

Greenlee: Nothing. I -- have you seen Ryan?

[Distant car horn honks]

[Telephone rings as Marissa listens to her messages]

David's voice: Marissa, hi. It's me. It's David. I know you told me not to call, but, well, I just had to. I've been thinking a lot about you, you know, and, well, I was wondering how you're holding up, how A.J. has been taking everything, and I would love to talk to you, Marissa, or, even better, I'd love to see you, and not so I could put my two cents in on J.R. or tell you how to live your life. I just -- I don't know. The last time we were together, you were so upset, and I guess I just miss your smile. I could really use it right now for a lot of reasons, not that you owe me anything, ok? I mean, that's, without question, my department, but I am hoping that someday you'll allow me to pay you back for all the time I've missed, whatever pain I've caused.

[Phone beeps as Marissa deletes the message]

[Police radio chatter]

Natalia: Is it true? Is Hayward really dead?

Jesse: Yeah, as a door nail.

Natalia: Wow.

Jesse: Not exactly the word I would use.

Natalia: Angie.

Angie: Hi, sweetheart.

Natalia: Hey, what do you need? Can I get you something? Do you want me to take her home?

Angie: You won't be taking her anywhere. Now, Jesse is the one who needs you right now.

Natalia: Put me to work.

Jesse: Seal off the area, all right?

Natalia: All right.

Jesse: Guys --

Cop: Chief.

Jesse: I need you two at the exits. Nobody leaves without giving a statement, ok? What are you still doing here? Get to work.

Natalia: All right. Ok.

Jesse: Be right back.

Angie: All right, baby.

Ryan: All right.

Kendall: Was David here? Did you see him, maybe talk to him? Did you get into an argument?

Ryan: What? I don't -- I don't know. I don't think so. Everything is a blank. I don't know.

Kendall: Ok, ok. We need to get out of here right now.

[Indistinct conversations]

Amanda: You know, I don't see Ryan, and I don't think I've seen him all night. Are you sure he was here?

Greenlee: Yeah. Maybe he went home to Emma or something.

Amanda: Well, you know, I could call him, tell him what happened. I'm sure he'd rush right over.

Greenlee: No. No, no. I don't want to bother him.

Amanda: Listen. I know about Ryan. You are not in this alone, ok?

Iris: I just can't believe this.

Liza: No one can.

Iris: Well, you're the new D.A. now, Ms. Colby. If foul play was involved, I want confirmation that whoever committed this heinous crime is found and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.

Liza: Believe me, if somebody killed David Hayward, I want them to pay as much as anyone else, but the fact of the matter is that up until a couple hours ago, he was actually my client, so ethics would dictate that I recuse myself.

Iris: Your ethics are not a priority right now. The man who saved my daughter's life, that man whose life was just taken away, he's my priority. You understand?

Liza: I do, but the situa --

Iris: Then you will take this case without hesitation, or you won't take any case at all because one phone call, I'll get a new D.A. in the morning, Ms. Colby.

Liza: That won't be necessary.

Iris: Good. I didn't think so.

Jesse: So what do you think?

Jake: Well, he was obviously in some kind of fight.

Jesse: But you can't say for sure that that's what did him in.

Jake: Can she see?

Jesse: No.

Jake: How long has it been?

Jesse: Few hours. It's actually the longest one so far.

Jake: God, I hope this isn't it.

Jesse: Oh, God, I don't know, Jake. I just don't know.

Greenlee: Thank you for staying.

Amanda: Of course.

Greenlee: I know David wasn't your favorite person.

Amanda: He was your husband, and right here tonight, that's all that matters.

Greenlee: I'm gonna take a minute.

Amanda: Whatever you need.

Greenlee: [Sighs as she holds David's hand] How did we get here? No matter what you did, the things you said, I never wanted this. You know, you can't leave without believing that. You really hurt me. Why? Why did you do it? I don't want this to be over, not here like this. You deserved better, David. [Sniffles] We both did. [Sobs]

Kendall: Come on, Ryan. Let's go. Let's go.

Ryan: Just slow down, ok, because I'm still trying to figure out what the hell happened here.

Kendall: Ok. I know. I know, all right, but this is not the place to do it.

Ryan: Why? Why? What difference does it make where we are?

Kendall: The difference is that you're bleeding, ok? I need to get you off your feet and take a look at your head. I mean, for all we know, you need stitches.

Ryan: Ok. Fine. All right. Let's just go down to the party, and I'll get a little bit of water, and maybe I'll start to remember something, ok?

Kendall: No, no, no. That's the last place you need to be.

Ryan: Why?

Kendall: Because look at you. You can't be in a crowd of people like that answering everyone's questions.

Ryan: Maybe somebody saw something. Maybe somebody knows. Maybe something will help me remember what's going on.

Kendall: Ryan, Ryan, listen to me a second, ok? Remember when you found me after Stuart's murder? Remember? I was terrified. I was lost. I was not in a good head space at all. You said you helped me, and I believed you. Why? Because I trusted you. I need you to trust me right now. Come on. Come on.

[A police officer arrives to look at David's room]

Jake: Honey, please. We got the EMTs here, so they have a job to do. Why don't we let them do their job?

Greenlee: I'm not ready.

Jake: Let's let them do their job. Come on, ok? All right. Proceed. Come here.

Colby: How can you act like this is none of our business?

Asher: It's not.

Colby: How can you say that after what we just saw?

Damon: Hey, what's this the whispering here? Who saw what?

Colby: Asher and I, we were taking a break from the party, and we ended up outside of David Hayward's room.

Damon: What? Well, did you see what happened to him?

Asher: No. The guy was in one piece when we left.

Colby: But he wasn't alone. Ryan was there, and they were arguing, and then he grabbed David.

Damon: Did you guys tell the cops this?

Colby: No, not yet.

Asher: Because there's nothing to tell. No one even threw a punch.

Colby: But Ryan, he was ready to pound David.

Asher: So things were getting a little heated. It doesn't mean a fight broke out.

Colby: I don't know what to do.

Asher: I do. You said Ryan is a stand-up guy, right?

Colby: Yeah.

Asher: Ok. So he'll tell the cops what happened if he feels like it's something they need to know, but if it's not and you just call him out like that, you're just starting trouble when there is none.

Caleb: I already told the chief we don't know what happened.

Natalia: Well, I still haven't gotten your statement, so --

Caleb: She saw exactly what I saw.

Natalia: And I still need to ask her a few questions.

Caleb: No, you don't. No, not at this moment, you don't because her daughter just lost her father.

Natalia: And I'm very sorry for that.

Caleb: No. Listen. No. Unless you're gonna arrest -- come on. We're out of here.

Natalia: Hold up. Wait. Nobody is leaving until we give the ok.

Caleb: Oh, really? Well, then arrest us because if you don't, we're out of here.

[Natalia clears her throat and walks away]

Jesse: Listen. You don't need to be here for this.

Greenlee: Yes, I do.

Jesse: Ok. It's your call. I know you're dealing with a lot right now, and if I could leave you alone, I would. Unfortunately, I've got questions.

Greenlee: Questions?

Jesse: Yeah. When was the last time you saw David?

Greenlee: Uh, I don't know.

Jesse: Can you give me an estimate?

Greenlee: An hour ago, maybe. We were by the docks.

Jesse: And you were talking about what?

Greenlee: David was angry. We had an argument. It wasn't a good day, but I never thought --

Jesse: What'd you argue about?

Greenlee: No. Oh, no. I was with Kendall when he fell.

Jesse: All right. Listen. One last question. After this argument, did you see him with anybody else?

Greenlee: Um, not that I can remember. No.

Jesse: Ok. Thanks. Listen. The press are all over this, and I'm sure they're gonna be zeroing in on you. If you would like, I can assign an officer to you.

Greenlee: It's ok. I'm fine. I'll find a way.

Jesse: All right. Listen. Once the dust settles, I'm gonna need a complete statement.

Greenlee: How is that even possible? I just mean, how does the dust settle after something like this?

Liza: So what's the plan, Chief?

Jesse: Whatever it is, I'm sure it's none of your damn business.

Liza: I'm pretty sure it is. I'm the new district attorney. That's right, Jesse. You and I are on the same team, so you make a case, I will be prosecuting it.

Kendall: Sit. Sit down.

Ryan: Wow.

Kendall: All right. Let me see. Come here. Let me see this.

Ryan: Ah!

Kendall: Sorry, sorry, sorry. Do you have a first aid kit?

Ryan: You know what? This is -- this is kind of crazy. I should just be at the hospital. Why don't I just go to the hospital?

Kendall: No, no. I think you're better off here with me.

Krystal: [Exhales]

Caleb: Hey. I'm gonna let you two be alone. I'm gonna take off.

Krystal: No. Would you just stay?

Caleb: You sure? Ok. I'll be right over there.

Krystal: Oh --

Marissa: Hey. Wow, you guys look great.

Krystal: Thanks, sweetie.

Marissa: It's a little early to be ducking out, isn't it?

Krystal: Yeah. We -- we left because I need to talk to you. Honey, something happened tonight.

Marissa: What? Krystal, just say it. Oh, my God, is it A.J.?

Krystal: No, no, no. He's fine.

Marissa: Then what?

Krystal: [Hugs Marissa as she gives her the bad news]

Jesse: When did this happen?

Liza: Mayor Blanco set it up with the governor.

Jesse: You picked a hell of a first day, Liza Colby.

Liza: Hmm.

Jesse: Hell of a first case if it ever gets to trial.

Liza: What do you mean "if"?

Jesse: Everybody hated Hayward. Could take you all year to sift through the suspects.

Liza: Not me. I'm fast.

Jesse: Ooh, fast D.A.

Liza: Yes. That's right. Look. I know that he was hated, but David was still a man, and now he's dead.

Jesse: Thank you for that, Liza Colby. I'll keep you posted.

Liza: I would appreciate it.

Jesse: Know what I'd appreciate? You stay the hell out of my way.

Colby: So you're the new D.A., huh?

Liza: Yeah. I have big news.

Colby: So it's your job to find out what happened to David, right?

Liza: Yeah. Look, honey. Would you please go home as soon as possible? I don't want you involved in any of this.

Jesse: How you holding on, babe? How you doing?

Angie: Just wondering how my husband is doing.

Jesse: Not bad. Things are going pretty smoothly. People seem to be cooperating. I got to tell you, there seems to be an undercurrent of joy, people wondering how nice life is gonna be now that Hayward is not in it.

Tad: Well, aren't you? From where I'm standing, life looks great.

Angie: Tad! David was a father, and no matter whatever else he was, this is a tragedy. I mean, really.

Jesse: Look. Chances are, somebody we know is behind all of this.

Tad: Well, if that's the case, the tragedy is just beginning.

Marissa: How? What happened?

Krystal: We don't know. David looked like he'd been in a fight.

Marissa: With who? Who would do something like that?

Caleb: The police are investigating.

Krystal: Trust me, whoever did this is gonna have to answer for it.

Marissa: I erased it.

Krystal: Erased what?

Marissa: David's message. He called earlier and said he was sorry for the way things went between us, that he wanted to start over. He wanted to make things up to me.

Krystal: Oh, baby, I'm so sorry.

Marissa: Now we can't have a future. We'll never -- oh, David's last words to me, and I deleted them like they were spam or something.

Krystal: Oh, no. You didn't know.

Marissa: Yes, I did. I did know. I pretended like I didn't care and, you know, like it didn't matter that I was a piece of him, if he was in my life or not, but it matters.

Krystal: I know.

Marissa: I care.

Krystal: I know you do. Listen to me. You are gonna get through this.

Marissa: I've done it once before, right?

Krystal: But this time, it's different. This time, you have me. I know that you don't know what to feel, and that's ok -- nobody does -- but it's not ok for you to go beating yourself up, because it's not gonna bring him back, and it's gonna keep you from doing what you need to do -- grieve.

[Cell phone rings as EMTs put David's body on a stretcher]

Greenlee: Kendall, where are you?

Kendall: I'm with Ryan at his place. You need to get over here right now.

Greenlee: I can't just leave.

Kendall: You have to. Something happened.

Greenlee: What do you mean, something has happened? Is Ryan all right?

Kendall: Sort of. I don't know. I found him outside yours and David's room. He looked like he had been in a fight.

Greenlee: No. What did he say?

Kendall: He doesn't remember anything. His cheek is bleeding.

Greenlee: Ok.

Kendall: Ok what?

Greenlee: I'll be right there.

David's voice: We're more than just legal husband and wife. We're partners. We're friends. There's no way in hell that I want to jeopardize that. I mean, to have a friend that I can trust, that I can share anything with, do you realize how amazing that is?

Greenlee's voice: Every couple deserves a first dance.

David's voice: You said you loved me.

Greenlee's voice: I meant it.

David's voice: You're such a liar. You really stood up for me. No one has ever done that before. No one has ever believed in me the way you have. We make a great team, Smythe.

Greenlee's voice: That's Hayward to you.

David's voice: If you give yourself to me, I want all of you -- your heart, your soul, your mind, your body -- and I will give you all of myself in return. So you have to really think about this, Greenlee. Are you sure?

Greenlee's voice: Yes.

David's voice: I never expected this marriage to be anything more than an understanding between friends, two people willing to support, protect each other. Now that it is something more, something real -- I want you to know, Greenlee, I'm in love with you.

[Police radio chatter]

Cop: No one is allowed to leave just yet, ma'am.

Greenlee: That's my husband. I'm following him to the hospital.

Cop: I'm sorry for your loss.

Ryan: Are you talking to somebody?

Kendall: Yeah. Yeah. Greenlee. She's on her way. Maybe she knows something more.

Ryan: Why would Greenlee know something more? Did she see what happened?

Kendall: No, but she saw David. I think you guys had it out.

Ryan: So where is Hayward now?

Liza: I don't think we have finished our conversation.

Jesse: I think I disagree with that.

Liza: Damn it, Jesse. There is a murder to solve, so whether you like it or not, we have to work together.

Amanda: I just want to crawl into bed, pull up the covers, and forget this night ever happened.

Jake: So do I, but unfortunately, I have to go to the hospital and make sure all of this is handled, ok? Baby?

Amanda: After everything we went through, he's just gone just like that.

Jake: I know. It's surreal. Listen. I got to ask you, do you think you're ok to drive? Because I thought maybe you'd take the car, and I can get a ride.

Amanda: Yeah. Really, I'm fine.

Jake: Ok. Now, I know our little one is asleep, but can you give him a kiss for me?

Amanda: I will. I love you.

Jake: I love you, too.

Liza: Listen to me. I know that you are not fond of this case, and frankly, neither am I, but this is the one that we are stuck with.

Jesse: Well, there won't be a case unless you let me do my job, Liza.

Liza: You think I don't see, Jesse, looking over at your wife every five seconds. Yeah. There is a list of suspects a mile long, but frankly, your wife is on the top of that list.

Jesse: Angela? What are you, high? Are you joking?

Angie: Who is he yelling at?

Jesse: My wife had nothing to do with this.

Liza: Oh, really? Angie and David were sworn enemies.

Jesse: David is sworn enemies with everybody he knows, and I was with Angela all night.

Liza: Oh, so is that the word of the police chief or a protective husband?

Jesse: Both, and you need to back off.

Liza: I can't. Jesse, this is my job.

Jesse: What, to crucify my wife?

Liza: Listen. You know how this works. There is gonna be pressure on you, on me. The public wants answers.

Jesse: The public is glad the man is dead.

Liza: All right. You know what? If you don't do this, I will. I will find Angie when she is alone, and I will get the truth out of her.

Jesse: Are you insane? My wife did not kill David Hayward.

Liza: Oh, so what, just take your word for it? That is not enough.

Jesse: She is blind, Liza!

Ryan: How do you get in a fight with somebody and not even remember?

Kendall: Well, I don't know if you saw David's room, but it was a mess. Something definitely went down in there.

Ryan: I got to get out of here.

Kendall: What? Ryan, where?

Ryan: I got to get to the station, ok? Hayward could be there right now swearing in a statement with Jesse.

Kendall: No, Ryan. Sit down.

Ryan: I don't remember anything, Kendall. I don't know what I said to him. I don't know what he knows. He could be there right now --

Greenlee: Oh, my God.

Ryan: Where's David?

Greenlee: You were right to get him out of there.

Ryan: Why? What? What happened? Greenlee, what happened?

Greenlee: David is dead.

Kendall: What?

Ryan: What do you mean? How? How? What -- are you saying that I --

Greenlee: You really don't remember anything?

Ryan: No. Anything.

Greenlee: He collapsed in the middle of the party. It was clear he'd been in a fight.

Ryan: With me?

Greenlee: I don't know, but it was so violent, Ryan, I think David died from it.

Ryan: Huh.
