Erica: It can't be true. Palmer can't be -- I have to go to Opal. I have to call Kendall and Bianca, and I'm sure that Petey is on his way.
Jack: Just a minute.
Erica: But there are so many arrangements that have to be made, and Opal is gonna be completely overwhelmed.
Jack: Before you go running off to take care of Opal, take care of yourself for just a minute. Huh? Just take a moment to take this in.
Erica: I don't want to.
Adam: Pete Cooney can't be dead. He's in Europe trying to behead that jackanape who tried to swindle him.
Brooke: Palmer was here. He was at the Valley Inn. And Jake Martin found him, but there was nothing that he could do.
Adam: Ross needs to know. How do I tell him I'm sorry for his loss? Everybody knows that Palmer Cortlandt and I hated each other ever since Pigeon Hollow. I never said I wanted him dead. I -- well, maybe I did a couple of times, but I didn't mean it.
Brooke: I know.
Adam: What happened? Was he ill?
Brooke: It was his heart.
Angie: I didn't even know that Palmer was back in town.
Jake: Yeah, for a couple of weeks now. You know, my dad was his doctor for years and years. He asked me if I'd give him the once over, check him out.
Angie: You mean, he let you examine him?
Jake: Dad convinced him that I knew what I was doing. So -- and you know something, he was fine. Flying colors.
Jake: He only cursed me out once, I think, because my stethoscope was too cold. I kind of thought he'd live forever.
Daisy: Angie? Angie.
Angie: Oh, Daisy!
Daisy: What's happened? I was at the Valley Inn. I was supposed to meet Palmer there, and they told me they brought him here?
Angie: Daisy, you remember Joe Martin's son Jake?
Daisy: Yes, what -- what happened?
Jake: I'm sorry.
Daisy: You're sorry? No. No. Not P.C. P.C.
Tad: Gosh, Ma. I'm all for being green, but do you have to do it in the dark? Ma?
Opal: Palmer -- he died. He's gone.
Tad: Oh, Ma. I'm so sorry.
Opal: Yeah. He was here in Pine Valley. I knew he was back. I wanted to see him. I called, and he told me he was tired, and "maybe some other day -- " so I was waiting. I -- kept hoping that I'd get some -- I don't know -- gold-plated invitation any day. Now I never will.
Brooke: That is not going to happen to you, because you know exactly what to do to take care of yourself. You have years ahead of you.
Adam: Pete Cooney's dead, and I make it about me.
Brooke: Well, Palmer would do the very same thing if the circumstances were different. You know, the two of you were so alike.
Brooke: Ha? Self-made, always right, ruthless with enemies. You know, "anything for family." Does that sound familiar?
Adam: Yeah, he broke my sister's heart. Left her pregnant and alone.
Brooke: He went to war.
Adam: And I raised his son, and that jerk never deserved to know the truth.
Brooke: Well, you came back to make him pay.
Adam: Yes, and I did.
Brooke: Well, maybe you should have thanked him.
Adam: For what?
Brooke: For what? Because your competition with that man gave you the drive to accomplish more every day.
Palmer's voice: Everything you've ever touched I own. Nobody will help you. Nobody will bail you out. You're finished! I own you, Adam Chandler. Ha ha! And there's not a damn thing you can do about it.
Adam: Maybe Palmer did steal my company, but I still had everything I ever wanted.
Adam's voice: Palmer, you don't know it, but you've made me the happiest man on the face of the earth. You set out to destroy me.
Palmer's voice: And I succeeded.
Adam's voice: No, not in any way that counts. The one way that counts is still solid, because Brooke has come back to me. My moment of greatest defeat has become my moment of greatest triumph! Brooke has agreed to marry me.
Adam: I needed you then, and I need you now. And here you are by my side. It's as if you're always there when I need you most.
Brooke: I should leave you.
Adam: No, no, no. I want -- I want to do more. How do I honor a man that I hated my whole life?
Brooke: I know.
Erica: I'm sorry.
Jack: No, don't be silly. You're not a bystander here. I mean, you loved Palmer as much as anyone. You were business partners. You were good friends.
Jack: And this is your loss, too.
Erica: He was so good to me and to my girls, always. He treated us like we were his family.
Jack: You were.
Erica: I loved him so much.
Jack: I know that. It's a good thing I'm not the jealous kind. I'll tell you that much. I mean, you and Palmer were so close, a lot of men would have had a hard time with that. But see, I'm smart. I knew that you two were too much alike to be anything but friends.
Erica: Ah -- best friends.
Erica: I do need to go to Opal now. [Sniffs]
Jack: I'll come with you.
Erica: Oh, well, you don't have to.
Jack: Erica, you are always trying to do so much for everyone else. Let me do this for you, huh?
Opal: Maybe if I'd just blown down the door, we would have gotten to talk. He packed more love into that ornery old heart of his than any man I ever knew. The trouble was, that's where it stayed, you know. Like, he was afraid that if it opened more than a crack, that all that love would come spilling out and there'd be nothing left. Yeah, with Palmer, you just had to figure out that he loved you and then hold on for dear life, 'cause it was one wild ride. Ha ha! I just wish I'd had one more chance to tell him that I loved him.
Tad: But he knew. Excuse me, ok? Excuse me just one second.
Opal: Oh, I don't think I can look at anything right now.
Tad: Mama, please, ok? Just for a sec, ok? Just for a sec.
Tad: 30 seconds. Ok.
Palmer's voice: She can deny it all she wants to. I know she loves me.
Tad: Now you believe me?
[Opal smiles and nods]
Angie: Hey, is there anything we can do?
Daisy: You know, Opal asked me to pick up Palmer's personal belongings, and doesn't it seem strange to you for a first wife to be doing this?
Angie: In this case, definitely not.
Daisy: Thank you. Nina's coming from Chicago. And Petey, he's coming home from Switzerland.
Angie: Daisy, I haven't seen your daughter for years, and I'm just so sorry that this is why she's coming home.
Daisy: Me, too. Opal said to tell you that everyone's gonna meet at Tad's later. That way, we can call family and people who can't make it. Tell them that at midnight tonight, we're going to all light a candle to honor Palmer's memory.
Angie: That's a lovely idea.
Jake: I'm gonna call my parents. I'm sure they'd love to do that.
Daisy: Thank you, Jake. Angie.
Krystal: Everyone in town is talking about Palmer.
Tad: I had no idea. I just got off the phone with the "Bulletin." "New York Times" called not too long ago. Been nonstop. Guess old P.C. made one heck of an impact.
Krystal: Yeah. It's not just the press either. Everybody's talking about the candlelighting service at midnight.
Tad: Excuse me. There she is.
Erica: Oh, Tad. Hi. Sorry.
Tad: Come on in.
Jack: Hey, Tad. Sorry for your trouble.
Erica: There was nobody else like him.
Opal: No. Ha ha!
Erica: Listen, Bianca sends her love, and I'm trying to reach Kendall. And how's Petey?
Opal: He's on his way. I'm glad you're here.
Erica: Oh, I'm gonna be here. I am here as long as you need me. I'm here.
Tad: Unbelievable. Every 10 minutes. It's, like, ringing off the hook.
Jack: Oh, sure.
Tad: Everyone wants to know about the arrangements, and I don't know what to tell 'em. I mean, did Palmer even leave any instructions?
Jack: He left very specific instructions, and one of them was to not make any fuss over a formal service.
Krystal: That was Jake. He and Angie are on the way. And Palmer's ex-wife and daughter --
Jack: Daisy --
Tad: And Nina, right?
Jack: You're gonna have a houseful.
Krystal: You're gonna need some food.
Tad: I guess somebody better get on the horn and order up a boatload of chicken.
Jack: Ha ha!
Tad: No, I'm serious. What better way to send off Palmer than to celebrate with the bird that put him back on top?
Krystal: Right, The Chicken Shack, was it?
Opal: Cluck and say howdy.
Erica: Ha ha!
Tad: Well, you heard Krystal. We're gonna need some chicken. Would you please go down to the store in regards to the poulet? Mama, I'm gonna need your expertise in the kitchen. Jack, do you know how to fry a chicken?
Tad: You're about to learn -- from the best.
Krystal: Well, I guess you better take off your jacket and roll up your sleeves.
Jack: Cluck and say howdy.
Daisy: Oh, Nina. Oh, darling.
Nina: I can't believe Father's gone.
Daisy: I know. I know. Your father was always so damn indomitably a survivor. How are you? Are you ok?
Nina: Oh, I'm ok. I'm just so glad we decided to meet here. I'm not ready to go over to Tad's. I don't want to be with a crowd. On the flight over here, I kept on thinking about all the wonderful times we had.
Daisy: Did you and your father have that weekly chat? Did you have it this week?
Nina: No. I talked to him last week, and he talked to me about patented video conferencing for Cortlandt Electronics. And then, of course, asked about his grandsons and me and -- even Cliff.
Daisy: Ha ha! So then he seemed happy.
Nina: Yes, except for chasing that con man all over Europe.
Daisy: Nothing P.C. loved more than going off on a wild goose chase around the world. Oh, I wish I'd talked to him more often. I always thought there would be more time somehow.
Nina: When was the last time you saw him?
Daisy: Honey, there's something I need to tell you. It's something I have never told anyone else. I -- it's about your father and me.
Palmer's voice: What have you got to offer?
Daisy's voice: Well -- I've always liked Pine Valley in September. And I have my pride, too. I'd have to have an invitation.
Palmer: Same time next year?
Daisy: Why, P.C., what a nice idea. I accept.
Nina: Hey, wait.
Nina: It's April. It's not September.
Daisy: I know. I'm here now because your father called me and asked me to come. So I did. I got on the plane and I must have been on the plane when he died.
Nina: Now we will never know what he had to tell you.
Daisy: Oh, yes. I know.
Jake: You don't have that chicken suit, by any chance?
Opal: Oh, ha ha!
Jake: I'm joking.
Opal: Lord, all those feathers? And Palmer so allergic. I mean, imagine. The king of chicken allergic to feathers.
Tad: Hello, babe.
Daisy: Oh, thank you so much.
Tad: Daisy, just as beautiful as ever. Both of you. Hi, darlin'. Hey, Krystal. Come here. Want you to meet somebody. Daisy, this is Krystal. This is my favorite ex-wife. This is Daisy.
Daisy: Oh, and I'm one of Palmer's many ex-wives.
Tad: And her daughter Nina.
Nina: So nice to meet you.
Krystal: I am so sorry for your loss.
Opal: Oh, my goodness! After all these years! You are a sight for sore eyes. Oh, my.
Daisy: Well, Palmer really pulled a number on us this time, didn't he?
Opal: He sure did.
Tad: Well, come on in. We have fried chicken.
Opal: What else?
Daisy: Ha ha!
Opal: It's just --
Daisy: I know.
Jake: So apparently Palmer's polo accident wasn't as damaging as everybody thought it was. Bing! You know what I'm saying?
Jake: You know what I'm saying?
Jake: Hi. I'm sorry. I hope that didn't come off the wrong way.
Nina: No, it is absolutely perfect.
Daisy: P.C. always loved a good laugh.
Jake: So -- embarrassing.
Man: From the Valley Inn? This was in Mr. Cortlandt's room. We were told to deliver it here.
Tad: Cool. Ok. Well, here you go. Thanks for coming over.
Man: Thank you.
Tad: Mom, I think this is for you.
Opal: Oh, my gosh. Hayley sent this to Palmer. It's his outtakes from that documentary she did. Says she thought he might like to see them.
Erica: Well, I know I would.
Tad: Ha ha! Anyone else?
Daisy and Nina: Yes! Yes!
Erica: I think everybody would.
Tad: Get this show on the road here.
Daisy: This ought to be interesting.
Daisy: I don't know what he was gonna say.
Palmer's voice: My Dobermans. Yes, everybody was scared of 'em. Well, why not? I had 'em well trained. Yeah, just like that, then they'd come.
Nina: Sometimes I thought Father loved those dogs more than he loved me.
Opal: Yeah, he almost set those hounds from hell on me.
Daisy: Yeah, well, he did sic them on me.
Palmer: I didn't give anything away for nothing, not for anything. No. It was all for me, finally. Except -- except my dear love was -- Daisy. Nobody much talks about Daisy anymore. And it's hard for me to talk about her, too. But anyway, there's other ladies in my life. I loved them all.
Tad: I think this calls for a toast. To Palmer Cortlandt.
Krystal: To Palmer.
Angie: To Palmer.
Jake: To Palmer.
Opal: To you, Lovebug.
Erica: To Palmer. Listen, I hope you're not too upset. I mean, I wouldn't want you to be hurt just because Palmer mentioned Daisy and not you.
Daisy: Opal, I -- I really am terribly sorry.
Opal: Well, there's no reason to be sorry. I mean, how can I possibly be green when you're the one who told Palmer that I was the woman for him? And then you turned me into a woman he couldn't resist.
Daisy: No, I didn't. You were always that woman. P.C. just needed a little push. Oh, when he did, oh, how he fell for you. Opal, I do want to tell you why I was here. I just didn't want to get into it in front of Erica. And the truth is, I'm here because P.C. called and he asked me to meet him at the Valley Inn.
Opal: Well, that's just wrong.
Daisy: I know. I know.
Opal: I mean, you two always meet in September. Last time I checked, this was April.
Daisy: You -- you knew?
Opal: Of course. It wasn't that hard to figure out.
Daisy: I'm so sorry. We never meant to hurt you.
Opal: Well, I won't deny, it did knick at first, but, you know, let's face it. A chunk of Palmer's heart had your name on it. It was always gonna be that way. Besides which a piece of my heart belongs to you, too. Because without you, Palmer and me, we never would have made it to the "I dos" in the first place. So every year when September comes, I know that the leaves will fall and school starts and Palmer is with you.
Daisy: Just when I think that you can't amaze me any more than you already have. You are wonderful, wonderful.
[Opal chuckles softly]
Daisy: Ok. Now I really want to tell you why I'm here.
Opal: Oh, you don't have to. That is between you and Palmer.
Daisy: No. Palmer said he had something very important to tell me, and it was about you. The truth is, Palmer wanted to end our "same time next year" dates.
Daisy: Yes. He has done nothing but talk about you for a whole year. I could hear what he was really feeling under the words. And, oh, well, I don't know. Maybe that's why I was late getting on the plane. I didn't want to hear it. I didn't want things to end.
Opal: You think?
Daisy: Ha ha. I know. You know, when you asked me to get Palmer's belongings from the hospital, I, um, I found this among them.
Opal: Oh, my Lord. I gave this to Palmer when The Chicken Shack went platinum. Ha ha! Of course, he never wore it.
Opal: He's been carrying this around all this time?
Daisy: This year. That's why he came back here, Opal. He wanted to see you and be with you and tell you how he felt.
Opal: Oh, God! All the time we wasted. I guess he really did love me, didn't he?
Daisy: Yes, he did.
Krystal: I don't know if this is a surprise or not. But, please, come on in. Everybody's inside.
Brooke: Thank you.
Adam: Thank you.
[Brooke and Nina laugh]
Nina: I have missed you.
Brooke: I've missed you, too.
Adam: Yes. I hope you don't mind that I came. Um, your father and I shared this once, proving that we weren't just into grinding each other into dust.
Palmer's voice: Hand it over.
Palmer: Oh, you know what. Just when I thought there'd be no sunshine in this day. Ahh!
Adam: Mm-hmm. Yeah. I just wanted to drop it off. I didn't want to interfere.
[Adam hands the liquor flask to Nina]
Nina: Stay, please.
Daisy: Yes, Adam, after all we couldn't celebrate P.C.'s life without you.
Opal: Yeah. Your memories of Palmer are definitely unique.
Adam: Yeah. I have the scars to prove it.
Erica: Well, that's why you have to stay. We are remembering Palmer -- good, bad, and the ugly.
Tad: From what I understand, Palmer and Adam were the male version of you and Brooke.
Brooke: Well, I hope Erica and I are the good, the bad, and the beautiful.
Tad: Oh, well played.
Jake: All this nostalgia makes me hungry.
Opal: Oh. Well, there's chicken, salad, more drinks. Everything in the kitchen. If anybody wants it, come on this way.
Jake: I will help you --
Jack: Let me to get you a plate.
Adam: Thank you for convincing me to stay.
Brooke: Oh, face it, Adam. This is exactly where you should be.
Tad: Palmer used to look after you like you were a princess in a tower. I swear, the only thing they didn't have was a moat with a couple crocodiles.
Nina: Sometimes he went too far.
Nina's voice: You tried to defame my husband every chance that you got, and I shall never forgive you. I shall never forgive you as long as I live!
Palmer: Darling, you don't mean that. Really --
Nina: Oh, yes, I do. Because what you did was hurtful and cruel. And you did it out of spite, didn't you? You did it because you want to see Cliff dead. And that's why you got on the witness stand so you could sign his death warrant.
Palmer: No, darling. That's not true.
Nina: Don't you touch me. You're the one who's a murderer. Cliff could never even try and kill anyone. You're the one who would kill someone. I hate you!
Angie: As cantankerous as Palmer could be, he always treated me with extraordinary kindness.
Adam: I'm glad somebody saw the man's soft side. He shot me.
Adam's voice: Palmer, you couldn't hit a bull in the ass with a bass fiddle.
Palmer: Ah, shut up. Drink this.
Adam: I'm not thirsty.
Palmer: If you were smart, you'd get plastered because I'm going in with this to get that bullet out.
[Palmer holds up a pocket knife]
Krystal: Palmer's surgical skills may not have been the best, but he knew how to kiss a woman.
Adam's voice: Go home, Cooney. I'm in no mood for you tonight.
Palmer: I'm in enough mood for both of us.
[Palmer dips and kisses Krystal]
Erica: You're right about that, Krystal. Palmer certainly was a ladies' man.
Erica: Palmer was always there for me and my daughters. And, Opal, I know how much he loved you.
Opal: Yeah, well, our wedding day, that was the best day of my life. Ha ha.
Opal's voice: With this ring, I thee wed.
Opal: Yeah, Petey's gonna miss his daddy so much.
[Cell phone rings]
Erica: Oh, sorry. Oh! It's Kendall. Kendall?
Kendall: I've decided not to go, Mom. I -- I know. I -- I just couldn't. I have to stay here with Zach and the boys. It's the right thing to do. It's the only thing. Especially after what Ryan said Greenlee's been doing. So please, I don't want you to pressure me.
Erica: Honey, that's not why I called. It's about Palmer.
Kendall: He's all right, isn't he?
Erica: No, honey. We lost him.
Erica: We are remembering Palmer tonight. We're lighting candles at midnight, but I thought you might want to remember him, too.
Kendall: I can come home, Mom. I'll be on the next plane.
Erica: Don't come home, Kendall.
Kendall: No, but, Mom, Palmer -- he's like family. He is family.
Erica: Palmer would want you to stay exactly where you are, honey, with your family, taking care of your boys and Zach and yourself.
Kendall: Palmer was always so good to us, to me. And he was the one who leased the Fusion building to me. It was actually Palmer's idea for Greenlee and me to work together. He thought we would be good together.
Erica: Honey, I am so sorry about Greenlee's latest stunt. I just want you safe. You're safe there.
Kendall: Ok. Um, just give everyone my love, ok? And I'll be sure to light a candle at midnight, Pine Valley time. [Hangs up phone and sobs]
Adam: I've cursed his name for decades, but I'm grateful to Pete Cooney for reminding me how quickly life passes. And we must say what needs to be said.
Brooke: I think so much has already been said.
Adam: And I could never live with myself if I don't tell you how I feel.
Brooke: Adam, don't.
Adam: I love you, Brooke.
Adam: [Chuckles] There, I said it. I love you. Maybe we can't be together. Maybe you don't love me, but I've said it.
Brooke: I love you, too.
Jack: Listen, I'm gonna grab a cup of coffee. You want some tea?
Erica: No, I'm ok. Thank you.
Jack: You sure?
Jack: Ok. All right. I'm gone.
[Erica and Opal chuckle]
Erica: Are you ok?
Opal: Yeah. This evening has really been a gift, hasn't it?
Opal: All the lives that Palmer touched, all the people, all the love in this room. And I just feel it all wrapped around me. Palmer's arms, too.
Erica: He was the love of your life.
Opal: He was. And if he was here, he would want you to get on with yours.
Erica: Get on with my what?
Opal: With finding the love of your life. He is out there somewhere, you know. Maybe you just ought to start looking, like in the kitchen.
[Everyone holds a lit candle and speaks to Palmer]
Brooke: The great Palmer Cortlandt. I was so intimidated when I first met you. Those eyebrows and all that bluster. But I got to know a man who always said exactly what he thought, consequences be damned. And I learned a lot from you.
Erica: You were the best dancing partner, the best business partner, the best friend.
Nina: You gave me everything and expected everything in return.
Adam: I've damned you to hell for quite a few years, but the truth is I wouldn't be the man I am if it hadn't been for you.
Krystal: You were the most charming and debonair man I've ever met. And a great kisser.
Tad: You and I were always more about butting heads. Huh. Warm fuzzies. But Dixie loved you like a father.
Opal: You are the love of my life, Palmer. Great, big, wild, and woolly buckin' bronco kind of love. You drove me stark raving mad, you old coot.
Daisy: P.C., what I wouldn't give to see you just one more time.
Jack: You were irascible, witty, absolutely brilliant, and always, always surprising.
Kendall: You were the only one who knew exactly how to handle the Kane women. Equal parts love and steel.
Angie: We didn't always agree, but you treated me with kindness. And Jesse, too.
Krystal: And you made me feel like you liked me. And being liked by you is the most special feeling in the world.
Brooke: And today because of you, I had the courage to say something that I've -- I've wanted to say for a long time.
Adam: From Pigeon Hollow to Pine Valley. And because of you, my happiest days are still ahead of me.
Jake: And my dad said there was and only ever could be one Palmer Cortlandt. He was right.
Nina: I love you, Father.
Daisy: To honor you and remember you and how much I love you.
Angie: You will be missed, Palmer.
Brooke: Kiss my Aunt Phoebe for me 'cause I know she's looking for you.
Erica: You, Myrtle, my mother. Heaven's in for quite a time.
Opal: You're safe now, Lovebug. You've loved. I'll carry you in my heart forever.
Dixie: Uncle Palmer. Welcome home.
