Randi: So how's this book turning out? You got everything all figured out?
Frankie: I haven't even picked it up yet.
Randi: Really? Why? You were so excited when you bought it.
Frankie: I got a lot of time left, I guess.
Randi: You know, you don't need a book to tell you what to do. You're gonna be an amazing dad.
Frankie: Huh. Only because I'll have the most amazing mother by my side. I brought in the mail. You got a package.
Randi: It doesn't say who it's from.
Frankie: Yeah, well, I hope it's an early baby gift. I'll tell you that. I went out and checked out the prices of kids' clothes yesterday. Man. For something we're only gonna use for, like, a couple of weeks, it's pretty pricy.
Frankie: Randi? What's going on? What happened? What's wrong?
Liza: Look, we talk to Emma, all right? We make a few gentle suggestions about what she really saw that night. Just enough to raise reasonable doubt.
Zach: That's a great idea. The truth is on our side.
Liza: Well, not according to Emma. Zach, come on, here. It is not a perfect world. Kendall's life is on the line. Would you stop acting like I'm gonna waterboard the girl? All I'm saying is that somebody that Emma loves and trusts, other than her mother, needs to get in there and get the real story in her head.
Kendall: Ok. Gentle prodding is one thing, but counter-brainwashing?
Liza: Look, Ryan is not gonna give Emma the push that she needs. He's protecting her. His only concern right now is to keep her away from Willis and rightly so. Because, believe me, once Willis gets his hands on her, he's gonna get his therapist in there, and all they're gonna do is cement into her head what Annie's been telling her all along -- that she saw you shoot Stuart. Once that happens, it's game over.
Zach: It's Ryan's kid. It's his call.
Erica: Emma needs her daddy to be her shield against the world. You be that for her, Ryan. Be that for her for as long as she needs you to be.
Ryan: And what if it's too late? I mean, the damage has already been done, right? Who knows what being in the middle of all of this has already done to Emma?
Erica: No, Emma's gonna be all right. You have a very strong, very smart little girl in there.
Jesse: I'm on your side. You have been playing by the rules, and that goes a long way with me. These idiot big shots -- they think the rules don't apply to them.
Jesse: You gonna get that?
Adam: Who's calling?
Annie: It's Erica. Why would she be calling me?
Adam: At Ryan's behest, no doubt. It might be wise to let your voicemail take that.
Randi: It slipped out of my hand.
Frankie: Oh, that's weird. What is it? A bookend, but only one? No note or anything?
Randi: No. Nothing.
Frankie: Well, I guess we got to wait and see if the other half shows up. Maybe that'll tell us who it's from. It's not very baby-friendly, is it? Look, what's going on?
Randi: What do you mean?
Frankie: You know what I mean. Lately you've been out of it, unhappy, moody. Is it the baby?
Randi: I don't know. Maybe it's just my hormones.
Frankie: Are you still excited about having the baby?
Randi: Yeah. Of course. I mean, how do you feel? Are you still excited?
Frankie: Of course. Why do you ask?
Randi: I don't know. I've kind of been getting those same weird feelings from you.
Frankie: Well, then maybe we should get rid of them all. Come here.
Frankie: I am very excited about having this baby. I promise. I love you.
Randi: I love you.
[Knock on door]
Brot: Hee hee! Congratulations, Mom and Dad. Ha ha ha!
Emma: Mommy, can you hear me?
Annie: Whatever it is, it's gonna have to wait. I, um, I can't talk right now. I will call you back. You're right. I don't need to be dealing with Erica's nonsense right now: Foaming at the mouth, telling me I should be behind bars.
Jesse: Which brings me back to the reason I'm here. That kind of harassment -- I've had it with all of them. Erica, Zach, Kendall,
Ryan: It's gonna stop.
Adam: It's about time.
Jesse: You are not the one on trial for Stuart's murder. As for your own legal problems, troubles, you have the right to the presumption of innocence. You also have the right not to be harassed. So I will do anything I can to prevent any further problems.
Annie: Thank you.
Adam: What about Kendall?
Adam: Yes. It's no secret, Chief, that you were hardly enthusiastic about the late D.A.'s push to get Kendall brought to trial.
Jesse: Yeah. I thought that D.A. North was rushing things a little bit. But from what this guy Willis has been telling me, the case against Kendall has gotten a lot stronger. So if these people continue to harass you, you call me. I will make sure they are taken care of.
Adam: Thank you, Chief.
Annie: What is he up to?
Adam: I don't know. I don't know. It could their meddling has finally gotten under his skin.
Annie: Uh, I'm not so sure.
Adam: But if he's genuine, then he could be a rather huge help to us when and if you go to trial.
Annie: I suppose he could.
Adam: I've got some calls to make. So if you'll forgive me?
Kendall: Zach, talk to me. I mean, what do you think? Do you really truly think that Ryan will be able to talk to Emma and get her to admit that she saw Annie kill Stuart?
Zach: I don't know.
Kendall: But it is the truth.
Zach: Doesn't mean he's gonna try to force it out of his daughter's head.
Kendall: So you think it's hopeless?
Zach: No, I don't think it's hopeless. Not at all. If Emma can stay out of the way, then we're good. But if Willis finds her and the brainwashing sticks, then he's got an eyewitness. We need to get the truth out of Annie.
Ryan: What is that? What is that? Hey. Where did you get this?
Emma: Found it.
Ryan: Is this your phone?
Erica: Yes. Where -- where did you find it?
Ryan: I didn't find it. Emma found it.
Erica: Oh. Did I -- did I drop it?
Ryan: Look at the last number that was dialed.
Erica: I have no idea whose number that is. I didn't make that call.
Ryan: It's Annie. Did you call Mommy?
Erica: Uh, yes? Hello. Don't hang up. I have a few things I need to tell you. You were very busy up in the attic that night, weren't you, Annie?
Annie: You keep your claws away from my daughter.
Erica: I'm trying to help Emma.
Annie: She is just a little girl. You stay away from her.
Erica: You're right, Annie. She is just a little girl. How much did you have to threaten her or sweet-talk her to get her to repeat back to you exactly what you wanted her to say?
Annie: Where is she?
Ryan: Annie, it's me.
Annie: You keep that megalomaniac away from my daughter.
Ryan: Please, Annie, I am very concerned about some things that Emma is saying.
Annie: Oh. You mean like how she saw Kendall kill Stuart? Is that what you're so concerned about, Ryan?
Ryan: I'm concerned about what she's gonna have to go through if she has to testify, Annie, what both sides -- defense and prosecution -- would do to her.
Annie: Oh, please. Don't even. All you care about is Kendall.
Ryan: She's reaching out, Annie, ok, to both of us right now. It's very important that we do whatever we can to help her. Ok? Not use her as a tool in all of this.
Annie: I don't suppose you'll let me talk to her?
Ryan: If I thought you had her best interests in mind, I would put her on the phone in a heartbeat. But right now I think all that you're interested in is saving your own skin. So no. I won't let you hurt her any more than you already have.
Annie: Well, then I guess there's nothing left to discuss.
Adam: Annie? What is it? What happened?
Ryan: You really think that you could've dropped it?
Erica: No. I remember putting it back in my purse.
Ryan: Which means Emma took it. And that is not her. She does not steal. That's how desperate she is to talk to her mother. The only thing is I don't know if she feels like we're all ganging up on her or if her mother is still pulling the strings.
Erica: Ryan, Annie has been manipulating that little girl ever since the night Stuart was killed. She's got Adam fooled. And now she's trying to use Emma to destroy Kendall. Annie has been working this plan from the beginning. This is her ticket to freedom.
Ryan: I just can't believe that she would do this to Emma.
Erica: Ryan, Annie is capable of doing anything.
Ryan: I know. I know. She doesn't want to go back to Oak Haven. She doesn't want to go back to jail. It's just I'm still surprised. I'm actually still surprised that she would put Emma through this.
Erica: Well, clever, crazy, and desperate: It's a very, very dangerous mix. I mean, you said that Emma has never stolen anything. Annie's the reason that Emma is doing that. Annie is playing mind games with your little girl.
Ryan: She definitely planted the idea that it was Kendall. But I honestly don't think she knows what it's doing to Emma now. Because if she did, I'm sure that she would stop all of this.
Annie: But Erica answered instead, and then Ryan got on the phone.
Adam: Did she give any indication as to where she is? It's too bad because Willis could use an eyewitness. If Kendall is acquitted, then Emma may be the key to getting my brother the justice he deserves.
Annie: Yeah. Just all the things Ryan was saying about the pressure she'll be under and what the other side will do to her in court. I would just -- I would hate to see her go through that.
Adam: And testifying is hard on an adult, let alone what it'll do to a child.
Annie: I'm not being a bad mother, am I?
Adam: No. Of course not. You're asking your child to tell the truth and maybe put my brother's murderer behind bars.
Annie: Yeah. I guess you're right.
Adam: You didn't put any ideas into Emma's head about what she saw that night, did you?
Annie: No. No. Of course not. I mean, I used her potential testimony to make a deal for myself, and that's what's led to all this. But why would you even ask me that?
Adam: Well, some things started coming back to me about what happened that night.
Annie: What things?
Adam: Being up there in that attic, drugged out of my mind. And you were holding that little girl so close, speaking to her so intensely.
Annie: What? You think I somehow planted in her mind what I wanted her to say?
Adam: No, no. No, no, no. It's just -- it's just things are coming back to me that --
Annie: Adam, if you recall, when we were all up in the attic, we had no idea that Stuart had even been shot. Remember? And I certainly had no idea that Kendall was anywhere around this house.
Adam: Yeah. Of course.
Annie: I used Emma once. I used her to get Ryan back in our lives, and it was a horrible, horrible thing to do. So I would never be so cruel to brainwash my child in order to hurt somebody else. I -- I hope you believe that.
Adam: Of course, I do.
Annie: All I've ever wanted in my life is to make my daughter happy.
Brot: So, Frankie, I have to ask, man.
Frankie: Oh --
Brot: What are you hoping for? A girl or a boy?
Frankie: I was thinking about a puppy, but I'll settle for healthy.
Randi: Amen to that.
Frankie: Right, right. Thank you, thank you. But no beer for you, so what would you like?
Randi: Um, I'm good, babe. I'm gonna run out and grab some groceries. You two have fun. Brot? Thank you for the flowers.
Brot: Aw. Well, I'm happy for you, Randi. I really am.
Randi: I won't be long.
Frankie: All right. Love you.
Randi: Hey. It's Randi. I need to see you now. Something is going on.
Frankie: So how you holding up?
Brot: You mean with the whole Taylor situation? Well, the logical part of me understands that it's time to move on. However, the emotional part --
Frankie: Yeah. It takes a little longer.
Brot: Yeah. You know, I guess I just miss my best friend, you know? But we all know going back to that hardly ever works. You know, it's just fate is a cruel mistress, man. I heard some -- some poor, heartbroken guy said that once time.
Frankie: Well, that's what he gets for having a mistress.
Brot: Hmm. Good point. Good point. So Daddy Frankie? I'm still getting used to this whole idea of you being a father.
Frankie: Yeah. So am I.
Brot: What's wrong, Frankie? You weren't planning this, were you? It just kind of sneaked up on you? Did it come too soon? What is it?
Frankie: No, no, it's not that. It's, uh --
Brot: What is it?
Frankie: It's this.
Brot: There's no way Randi cheated on you, man. She's, like, way too in love with you. You know what it is? You know what it is? It's some jerk just trying to pull your chain. That's all it is.
Frankie: Yeah, I know. It's just --
Brot: It's just what?
Brot: You thinking about your time in Iraq? Man, you got to forget about that. I was with Randi. So was Taylor. And there is no way she would do something like this because all she could think about was you 24/7. She missed you so much, Frankie.
Frankie: All right. You know what? Yeah, you're right. I'm paranoid. It could be somebody at the hospital who's trying to get back at me, right?
Brot: Exactly! That's what I'm saying. So just delete that piece of garbage, and let's get back to celebrating.
Frankie: It's just that we haven't told many people yet.
Brot: I know you told your mother, though, right? And you know she's happy and proud and feeling all those things that she's supposed to feel. So that means that the whole hospital knows by now, Frankie. So trust me, man. All that's going on is some dipwad is just trying to get their laugh. Forget about it. Look, to Frankie, Jr. Come on, man.
Brot: Ahh. Daddy Frankie.
Jesse: This is Madison North. She's playing games with your head. She's playing games with both of us.
Randi: Why? Why, Jesse? She's gotten everything that she wants already. And how would she even know about the bookend? Surveillance tapes. She obviously saw it on the cart when I was rolling Henry's body out of the room. Look, don't get yourself worked up. Ok? Trust me. I will handle Madison.
[Pounding on door]
Liza: Ryan? Ryan? It's Liza.
Erica: Liza? What are you doing here?
Liza: Erica, listen, I need to talk with Ryan.
Erica: He's not here.
Liza: Can you please let me in? Please?
Erica: Get in here fast. You better have come alone. Nobody followed you, did they?
Liza: No. Where is he? Where is Ryan?
Erica: Ryan went to the Chandlers'. He had the idea that he could perhaps talk some sense into that crazy ex-wife of his.
Liza: Oh, God. He shouldn't be doing that.
Erica: Well, he is.
Liza: Wow. So he went ahead with your inane idea to trap Annie into a confession?
Erica: You need to frame your question differently, counselor. Your ignorance is showing.
Liza: He is never going to get Annie to confess. Kendall's only hope right now -- it lies with Emma and getting her to admit that her mother is making her say the things that she is saying. And we better do it before the prosecution gets to her.
Erica: Well, so far, Emma is sticking to her story.
Liza: All right, I'm gonna go talk to her.
Erica: Is it against the law, counselor, to interrogate a minor without her parents' permission?
Liza: Erica, I am trying to save your daughter's life, and we don't have much time here. Listen, are you gonna get out of the way, or is this just gonna get ugly?
Guard: Sorry to bother you, sir, but Mr. Lavery here was rather insistent he see you.
Adam: Well, it's nice to see you boys actually do your job once in a while. Give him a nice, quick kick in the pants on the way out.
Ryan: I need to talk to Annie, please.
Adam: Tough. Get him out of here.
Annie: Wait. It's all right. I'll listen to what he has to say.
Adam: Ahem. Panic button. If he gives you any trouble, use it.
Annie: Thank you. What do you want?
Ryan: I want to protect Emma. Ok? She's away from home right now. She's away from her friends. She's away from everything that resembles a normal life for her.
Annie: That's not my fault. Who's the kidnapper now?
Ryan: Annie, I'm trying to prevent the prosecutor from getting his hooks in her. Ok?
Annie: For her sake or for Kendall's?
Ryan: For her sake. Emma is my number one priority.
Annie: Ryan, you're the one who's hiding her away. How am I supposed to help her?
Ryan: Well, you could tell Willis that Emma's story is completely made up, that you convinced her that she saw Kendall shoot Stuart. You put that idea in her head.
Annie: Why can't you just accept the fact that Emma witnessed Kendall commit murder?
Ryan: Because Emma is not telling the truth.
Annie: Wow, you are really something else. So now you can read into children's souls, too? Does your ego have any limits or any boundaries?
Ryan: Oh, you had Emma up in the attic for hours. Ok? You were filling her head with lies. You were prepping her, and now you're using her as your trump card.
Annie: Hmm. I presume you've tried to convince Emma that she's lying?
Ryan: No. I mean, I've talked to her about it.
Annie: Ok. And yet somehow what I was able to do in a matter of hours, you're unable to undo in all the time you've spent with Emma since? Wow, Ryan. I mean, I must possess some powers that you don't, huh?
Annie: Your phone's ringing. Maybe you should answer it. It might be one of your girlfriends.
Ryan: Are you gonna do the right thing, Annie? Are you? Are you gonna try and convince your daughter to tell the truth?
Liza: Do you remember me?
Emma: You're the lawyer lady.
Liza: Yeah. Yeah, I'm Liza. I'm Colby's mom. Um, Emma, I want to ask you a few questions.
Kendall: All right, I have to do something. I cannot just sit here. It's driving me absolutely crazy.
Zach: You don't have to do anything. We'll take care of it.
Erica: You need to get out here. I tried to reach Ryan, but he's off somewhere dealing with Annie.
Zach: What do you want?
Erica: Liza showed up. She bullied her way into talking to Emma. I tried to stop her, but I was afraid that Emma would get even more upset if I made a scene.
Zach: I'm on my way.
Kendall: What is it?
Zach: I've got to deal with a loose cannon. You stay here.
Annie: Emma is telling the truth. And you are the one who has been messing with her head, not me. You have turned her against me. You have been parading a string of women through her life. Substitutes for her real mother, the mother that you are responsible for throwing in Oak Haven. So, Ryan, it's really no wonder she might be a little stressed out around you.
Ryan: Well, I'm really sorry that you see things like that, Annie. But the bottom line here is I didn't kill a man.
Annie: You mean you didn't kill your brother like I did? Wait a second. Don't I remember something about you shooting Jonathan and letting a cave collapse in on him? As a matter of fact, I think you thought you had killed him. Oh, but that's different. It's totally different, right? Because, I mean, Jonathan was crazy. He was a sadistic kidnapper who -- oh, wait a second. So was Richie. See, I knew we connected for a reason when we first met, Ryan. We have so much in common. The only difference is you got away with it, and I didn't.
Ryan: No, Annie. The only difference is my brother had a gun pointed at three women at the time, and this goes way beyond you and Richie. It's a very, very long list with you. Please don't make me go through it. Another difference is I actually admit my mistakes, you know, and I don't put my daughter at risk.
Annie: Oh, you hold yourself so high and mighty, don't you? It's amazing. You really think you're better than me, but, really, you are worse. You are willing to sell our daughter's soul in order to protect your precious Kendall. I have not put any thoughts in Emma's mind, Ryan. That is what you are gonna do. And if you succeed, you will warp her tiny little mind forever.
Ryan: I will warp her tiny little mind? Oh, my God, Annie. This may be a very foreign concept to you, but what I'm trying to do here is I'm actually trying to protect our daughter.
Annie: Is that why she was here the night of the murder, Ryan? No. She was here because you needed her out of the way. You were too busy trying to seduce Kendall to take care of our 7-year-old daughter. So I am not the one trying to poison Emma's brain. That is you. Now, get out. Get out before I press this button and have you thrown out.
Ryan: You can do whatever you want. You can say whatever you want. Ok? One of us has to protect our daughter, and now it's very, very clear to me who that's gonna be.
Emma: I told Daddy the truth.
Liza: You know, Emma, I was there that night. I was. It was horrible: All the lights and the thunder and the noise. But you didn't see me there, did you? No? Because you -- you were in the nursery before your mom took you up to the attic. Isn't that right?
Emma: No. I came downstairs.
Liza: Well, that's what your mom wants you to say. Right?
Liza: Emma, come on. Are you sure?
Erica: Liza, you are upsetting her.
Liza: Listen, I just -- you know what? I want you to close your eyes, ok, and I want you to think back and remember everything that happened that night. Can you do that?
Emma: I don't want to.
Erica: Liza --
Liza: Look, I want you to think back to when your mother took you up to the attic. Did she tell you things that you had seen that you really hadn't seen?
Emma: No! Stop it!
Erica: Liza, you're upsetting her.
Zach: Come with me.
Liza: She was just about to --
Zach: I said come with me.
Erica: Are you ok, sweetheart? Are you ok?
Zach: I thought I told you to leave her to Ryan.
Liza: I thought you told me to keep Kendall off of death row.
Randi: This is never gonna stop. Don't you see? She's gonna keep torturing us for the rest of our lives. What if she tells Frankie? He already thinks that something is up with me. You know what? I should just confess to him and tell him everything that's going on before he finds out on his own.
Jesse: No. No. We stick to doing what we discussed. I promise you I will get -- Randi? Randi?
Randi: Jesse, I'm having pains.
Jesse: Hey --
Randi: Oh, my God, the baby!
Jesse: It's ok. Hang on. You're gonna be ok. Did you find my wife yet: Dr. Angela Hubbard? Please. I called from the ambulance?
Nurse: No, I'm sorry. I haven't been able to find her.
Jesse: Page her again, please?
Randi: Oh, God! The pain is getting worse! I want Frankie!
Doctor: Listen, we need to start and I.V. and draw some blood. That cubicle.
Frankie: Hey, where is she? What the hell happened?
Jesse: Calm down. They're checking her out now. She started having pains when she was in my office.
Frankie: Your office? She told me she was going to the grocery store.
Jesse: She was upset. She said she wanted to talk. She's in this cubicle. Here, here, here. Go -- go be with her.
Liza: Ryan is not gonna get Emma to admit anything. He's her father. He doesn't want to upset her. I don't want to upset her either. But I know that I can get her to admit that Annie has been telling her to say these things, and I can do it gently.
Zach: I told you to let him handle it.
Liza: You know, since when are you so deferential to Ryan and his feelings, huh? You're considering his feelings before you're considering Kendall's life? Listen, Zach. All right, you think I'm being a little too heavy-handed in there? You go in there. You try to do it. But somebody's got to try to make a difference here before Willis gets to her. Because, believe me, he is going to get to her. And when he does, well, his methods are not gonna be so gentle.
Zach: Stay out here. Hey, guys. You ok? Come here. That better? It's got to be frustrating now: Being away from home, being stuck here in a strange place. You feel like talking to me?
Erica: You need to cut the small talk, Liza.
Liza: Listen, I am trying to save your daughter's life here, and all you seem to want to do is open up a bitch-fest.
Erica: I have zero interest in opening up a bitch-fest or anything else with you. My daughter is innocent. The only thing I want is her freedom.
Doctor: I'll get this down to the lab.
Frankie: It's gonna be all right, baby. This can happen. You've just been trying to do too much, so you let me handle all the shopping. Ok? My dad told me you stopped by his office. He said that you were upset about something. Look, I know things have been a little difficult. That's my fault.
Randi: No, it's not your fault at all, Frankie. You did nothing. It's what I did.
Emma: You want me to say I didn't see Kendall with the gun.
Zach: I just want you to tell the truth. That's all I want. Is that what's happening? People are telling you to say things that didn't happen? Like Liza?
Emma: Daddy, too.
Zach: What about your mom? Does she want you to say things that didn't happen that night? Hey, you don't have to talk to anybody if you don't want to. Just know you can talk to me. I really want to know what happened that night. It's important. Just whisper in my ear, and I'll believe everything you say. Deal?
Erica: All right, you got what you came for. Now, get out. Now.
Ryan: What the hell is she doing here?
Erica: She just showed up. She showed up to give Emma the third degree.
Ryan: Where is Emma?
Liza: Ok, wait. Would you just please let him talk to her? Ok?
Zach: It's ok if it's a secret. You can trust me. Do you understand?
Ryan: Get away from my girl. Get away.
Kendall: Oh, damn it! Damn it! Who are you?
Stuart: It's all right, Kendall. I'm not here to hurt you. I'm here to help you.
Adam: Are you all right?
Adam: Did Ryan upset you?
Annie: But I will not cry. I will not let him make me cry.
Annie: Don't cry. Don't cry.
Emma: I'm scared, Mommy. The gun scared me.
Annie: I know, sweetheart. I know, but everything's ok. Everything's ok. Emma, are you listening to me?
Annie: Do you love Mommy?
Annie: Then you have to forget what you saw. You can't tell anybody what you saw. But I'll be all right. I just thought I could deal with him, but Ryan can be so vindictive.
Adam: I --
Annie: What's wrong?
Adam: I remembered, um, in the attic what you said to Emma -- that she had to forget. You killed him, didn't you? You killed my brother.
