Madison: Mind if I join you? I'm Madison, Henry North's widow. I understand that you're the woman who killed my husband.
Amanda: Do you love me?
Jake: Of course, I love you.
Amanda: Then swear to me on our love that you did not give Liza my baby. Can you do that? Can you swear to me on our love that she doesn't have my son?
Jake: Liza's baby is not yours. I swear on our love. Ok.
Marissa: So? Is Liza's baby really yours?
David: The DNA didn't match. According to this, he's not my son. Jake figured out what I was doing. Somehow he changed these results.
David: Marissa, it's happened in this town before. I don't know how, but he's one step ahead of me.
Marissa: No. Stop being ridiculous. Accept it. The baby isn't yours.
ADA Willis: And you admitted that you lied when you told Chief Hubbard that Kendall and Zach Slater had gone to the hospital chapel. You knew that they'd actually gone to the Chandler house.
Ryan: Ok. I went over my statements already with D.A. North, all right? And if you're trying to get me to change any of them, you're wasting your time.
ADA Willis: Just trying to understand what your testimony's gonna be, Mr. Lavery. You did lie to cover for Kendall and admitted to it. Considering your relationship with her, that's fairly damning evidence.
Ryan: All right. My most recent statement, which happens to be the one that you have right there, is the truth, ok? And my relationship with Kendall was well-plumbed by D.A. North. So, you've got what you're gonna get from me.
ADA Willis: Actually, I have a few more questions.
Liza: Don't say another word, Ryan. Mr. Willis.
ADA Willis: Miss Colby.
Ryan: I really don't need you to tell me what to say or what not to, Liza.
Liza: Well, maybe not, but before you continue, you need to know that I'm representing Kendall.
Kendall: Well, what do you want, Zach? Obviously, it's not me. That day at the boardwalk with Ian and Spike, I told you all I needed was our family. Yesterday I told you I would have no hope if you were taken away from me. I was telling you that I still love you, but you didn't say it back, because you wanted to hurt me. And it worked. So now I hurt you back, and that's what we do. We do the same thing over and over and over again, and I don't understand why can't we just love each other? Why?
[Kendall and Zach kiss]
Zach: We can't do this. What the hell are we doing here? I would love to fall into you in our past, but I can't do that.
Kendall: What would be so horrible about loving each other again?
Zach: Where -- where would we go? Just where? Just to where we were? That's it? Same place?
Kendall: Is that so wrong? We're married again. We're living under the same roof. And we used to have something --
Zach: We're living under the same roof as strangers. And then what? Making love as strangers? That doesn't mean anything, so why do it? What's -- yeah, maybe you are who you are, and I am exactly who I am, but we're not who we were to each other anymore. Too much has happened.
Kendall: Zach, I -- I can't ignore what I feel anymore.
Zach: Feelings that turn into anger, and anger turns into hate. I'm tired of hating you. And I don't want you hating me. We got to focus. We got work to do. We can't -- the trial is complicated, even with North dead. There's a lot of things to do.
Kendall: I am standing here feeling nothing but love for you. But it's only one-sided, isn't it? You -- you won't let yourself love me back.
Zach: I can't.
Marissa: You used an outside lab to test baby Stuart's DNA. I never told anyone where that sample was sent. Did you? I mean, how could Jake have possibly tampered with the results?
David: I don't know. But believe me, it can happen. You weren't here a few years ago. All I want is the damn truth.
Marissa: Well, this is the truth. You just read it. No match. You're not the father. Why is having this baby so important to you? Why do you need him so much?
David: It's not a matter of needing.
Marissa: You have a daughter. She's standing right in front of you. But you can't see me. And I -- I can't keep doing this. I want to be your daughter. I want to be there for you, but not if you can't give up this sick obsession. Leave those people alone. Let Amanda grieve her child. Let Liza love hers. Look, either you leave those people alone, or you lose me forever. Choose. Me or your obsession.
David: You're right. I'm sorry. Of course, I choose you.
Jake: Do you think honestly that I could do something like that? Take your baby and put it in Liza's arms, and do that in front of David? No. Your baby is safe and living in that country house that I told you. He's being loved, and he's going to live the life that you want him to.
Amanda: I'm sorry. I'm sorry for asking you, for even accusing you.
Jake: We had a plan, and it's working. It's worked. He's off our back. He's out of our lives. That's it for David. And the most important thing is that your baby is safe. All right?
David: I need to speak to the two of you about the baby.
Randi: I don't know what you're talking about. I didn't kill anybody.
Madison: You're not very convincing. But then again, I suppose the only acting experience you've had is with your johns.
Randi: Get out of here.
Madison: I understand you're pregnant. Is it Henry's?
Randi: This baby is my husband's.
Madison: The night that Henry died -- did you have sex with him before you killed him?
Randi: Not that it's any of your business, but the only man I've been with since I met my husband has been my husband. You and I have nothing further to discuss.
Frankie: Hey, sorry I took so long. I -- you ok?
Frankie: It's not the baby, is it?
Madison: Oh, I don't think it has anything to do with the baby. Does it, Randi?
Frankie: Who are you?
Ryan: What in God's name was he thinking?
Liza: That he wants to win, of course. Listen, Mr. Willis, you and I both know that you inherited a deeply flawed and extremely weak case based on flimsy evidence and conflicting testimonies. You've got no direct eyewitnesses. You've got many other possible suspects, all with motive and opportunity, enough to raise reasonable doubt. You should reconsider taking this to trial for your own career's sake, if not for Ms. Slater's future.
ADA Willis: D.A. North believed he could win this case with little or no trouble.
Liza: Well, you know there's a difference between winning and finding out the truth, and North was all about the former. What about you, Mr. Willis?
ADA Willis: I'm interested in justice. I'll be in touch, Mr. Lavery.
Ryan: Hmm. Well, Kendall and Zach must be clinically out of their minds. I mean, you're also representing Annie, right? There's got to be a conflict of interest there, especially considering she is the one that killed Stuart.
[Emma eavesdrops from the stairs]
David: I've done something I'm not very proud of. I told you that I was gonna let it go -- my suspicions about the baby. But I didn't. I obtained a DNA sample of Liza's baby, and I compared it against my own.
Jake: You just don't know when to quit, do you?
Amanda: My baby died in Barbados. You were there.
David: I know, I know. Amanda, I just started wondering -- your desperation to keep me away from my boy, and then Liza's baby, and I thought maybe --
Jake: It doesn't matter. The DNA didn't match, did it?
Jake: And are you prepared to leave it at this? I mean, you know, not come up with some twisted scenario in your mind that, "Oh, I did this DNA test and somehow Jake finds out about it." Maybe I switched the test. I mean, you know, something like that?
David: You're the one that actually made me see I was wrong. There's no way that anyone could cry the type of tears that I saw you shed unless they experienced the kind of grief that I already know of losing your own child.
Amanda: I feel the loss of my son every day. It hurts.
David: I know.
Amanda: And damn you, David. You've only made it worse.
David: I'm sorry, Amanda. I truly am sorry, and I swear for you, for my daughter, for our lost son, it's over. I will never go here again.
Amanda: Thank you.
Jake: Hey. You heard him. It's finally over.
Amanda: It's not over. Jake, it's never gonna be over. The only reason he believed me is because I'm not lying. I will feel the loss of my son every day for the rest of my life.
Madison: I'm Madison North. I recognized your wife as the police chief's daughter-in-law. He has a picture of the two of you in his office. Very handsome couple.
Frankie: So your husband was --
Madison: Henry North. That's what I was doing in your father's office -- tying up some of my husband's affairs.
Frankie: Sorry for your loss.
Madison: Thank you. It's been a difficult time, and your father's been very helpful to me. He's a good man. He mentioned you were making him a grandfather. I saw your wife here, and I thought I would stop by and congratulate her. Henry and I never had a chance to start a family. Well, I have some arrangements to make for Henry's service.
Frankie: Of course.
Madison: It must be so wonderful to have your whole lives ahead of you. Maybe we'll see each other again some day. Good luck to you both.
Frankie: Are you sure you're ok? Do you want something to eat? Are you hungry?
Randi: No, I'm fine. Could we just -- could we just go home?
Frankie: Yeah. Sure.
Jesse: Kendall home?
Zach: Nope, and I'm not sure when she's gonna be back. Come on in.
Jesse: This new prosecutor -- he wants everybody involved interviewed again.
Zach: What do you think of this guy?
Jesse: Willis seems to be a straight shooter.
Zach: And what do you think he's gonna do?
Jesse: Well, he wants to look over the facts first, and, uh, he's not really sure why this guy North was so hell-bent on convicting Kendall. He's got me talking to a lot of people about Annie.
Zach: That's good news, right?
Jesse: He knows I don't think Kendall did it. I'll do whatever I can.
Zach: How you doing?
Jesse: Good. Things are gonna be ok.
Zach: Frankie and Randi?
Jesse: Also good.
Zach: Anything I can do?
Jesse: No, you've done more than enough.
Liza: I don't think that Kendall did it.
Ryan: But would you be willing to try to prove that Annie did do it?
Liza: I don't have to prove it. I only need to have reasonable doubt. Ryan, why are you so sure that Annie did it?
Ryan: Well, I wasn't so sure at first, you know? But there's a number of reasons -- a number. One of which is that Emma was there that night. She drew a picture of Annie holding a gun and says that's what she saw.
Liza: Do you -- do you have that picture?
Liza: Can I see it?
Ryan: I do. D.A. North didn't give it much credence because Annie had already said that she had a gun that night and that she was pointing it like that to defend herself and Emma and Adam from the real killer.
Liza: Is Emma here?
Ryan: Why? You want to talk to her?
Liza: Oh, no, no. I mean, if she's not feeling well.
Liza: I'll be in touch. Kendall. What are you doing here?
Frankie: I can promise you I'm not gonna be one of these annoying fathers who's bugging you about how you feel and what you need every second, but what I do want is to make sure you're comfortable and that you're never overwhelmed.
Randi: Oh. What did I do to deserve you?
Frankie: You smiled and said, "I do."
Randi: All my dreams wrapped into one.
Frankie: Whoa, it's ok. We can make love while you're pregnant.
Randi: I'm sorry, baby, it's just this whole nausea thing -- it's kind of getting to me.
Frankie: Ok, uh, what do you need?
Randi: Um, soda water usually helps.
Frankie: Soda water.
Frankie: We're all out, baby, but I can run down to the corner store.
Randi: No, you don't have to do that, sweetheart. It's ok.
Frankie: Well, maybe I won't be the nervous father-to-be, but I'm still gonna cater to your every whim.
Randi: I love you.
Frankie: I love you. I'll be right back.
[Knock on door]
Jesse: Hey. I got your text. What's wrong?
Randi: She knows.
Jesse: Who knows?
Randi: Madison. Madison -- she knows. She came up to my table, she sat down at the Yacht Club, and she told me that she knows that I killed Henry. Jesse, what am I gonna do?
Marissa: So I helped him run a DNA test on Liza's baby.
Krystal: Damn him. He swore he would not go after Jake and Amanda and that he would leave Liza and her baby alone, and now he's got you sucked into it this time.
Marissa: No. I offered to help. He's promised to stop, to move on.
Krystal: Do you know how many times he's promised me that? And how many times he's broken that promise? It's just another lie. Trust me, he will figure out another way to go after Jake and Amanda.
Amanda: For once I don't think so. I think he really means it.
Kendall: Coming here was just another example of my brain short-circuiting and me acting without thinking. I wish you hadn't found me. It's just this whole thing with Zach, living with him again and being together -- married, but we're not really married. It's just I'm doing all my bad habits again, and I'm sticking you right in the middle. And I know, Ryan, that is so unfair.
Ryan: You're right, it is unfair. It is, and I kind of wish I didn't find you either. I think it probably would have been better if you just turned and walked away. I do. I mean, come on. Anything has got to be better than this.
Zach: Hey. The D.A.'s notes?
Liza: Yeah. I scanned them in here to help sort them out. They're still confusing as hell. This guy -- he's just an incessant scribbler and doodler. There's nothing here that's organized. I don't know how he planned on making sense of this by trial.
Zach: And yet he's convinced that Kendall's case is gonna be a slam dunk.
Liza: Yeah, and the new prosecutor got the same impression.
Zach: The important thing is, does Willis know what North had up his sleeve?
Liza: No, he's still scratching his head.
Zach: What about you? You got something?
Liza: I didn't up until a few minutes ago. Look at this.
Zach: That's it? "The kid"? It's probably Ian's -- Kendall's motive.
Liza: No. That's what I thought at first, except every other time that North mentions Ian, he writes his name out and he does it in caps. See? Right there. But here we have "The kid," and it's underlined in quotations.
Zach: Um, Little A -- he was at the house that night. Maybe --
Liza: Well, so was Emma, right? And she drew that picture of Annie holding a gun, which Annie has already admitted to having.
Zach: The cops talked to both the kids. If they'd known something, then the kids would have been on North's witness list.
Liza: Yeah, unless he was waiting. That big courtroom scene when he can uncover the missing piece of the puzzle and get away with skirting discovery laws.
Zach: What are you thinking?
Liza: Well, see this? It's his last entry.
Zach: A D.C. area code.
Liza: Mm-hmm. I called it. It's a therapist -- a therapist that specializes in traumatized children.
Zach: It's Emma. She's the ace in the hole.
Ryan: You got to get control of yourself, ok? These knee-jerk reactions are what got you into trouble in the first place. It landed you over at Chandler's. It put a gun in your hand. It's got you on trial for your life.
Kendall: Don't stop there. Come on. Keep going. That's what also landed us in bed, right? That's -- that's what you were going to say, isn't it?
Ryan: No. That was just as much my fault as it was yours. You love Zach, Kendall. You've made that really, really clear, you know, in every way possible -- spoken, unspoken, consciously, unconsciously. You love him. That's who you should be with, right? But I got to get back to my life, you know? I can't keep being here for you like this. That's his job.
Kendall: All right. Ok, ok, would you please stop, all right? You've said this to me before. I've heard this before and you're not wrong. You're just -- it kind of hurts to hear you lay it out like that.
Ryan: Ok, I'm sorry. I'm sorry, but you just -- you probably shouldn't be here.
Kendall: Well, I need to be somewhere. I mean, I'm scared, and I don't want to be alone. I just feel like I need someone to throw me a life preserver or something.
Ryan: Look, you don't need to be scared, ok? You don't. Liza is all over this case. She's all over the case. D.A. North -- he's out of the picture. It's gonna be a fair trial now. And most important? You know you didn't do it.
Kendall: Did I get another chance? Yes. Yes, I did. But it still doesn't take away all the panic and all the emptiness that I feel inside. It's still there. And, yeah, of course, I didn't do it. Why would you even say that?
[Emma continues to listen from the stairs]
Ryan: Because sometimes it sounds like you did. You say that you need a life preserver, right? But only people that are drowning need a life preserver.
Randi: She seemed to know everything about my past with Henry. She even suggested that the baby might be his. She knows what I did to him, Jesse.
Jesse: Did you admit to anything?
Randi: No, of course not. But my reaction had to give her a clue. She said she saw a picture of me on your desk.
Jesse: Yeah. She came to see me. She's the one that took the surveillance tapes from the hotel that night. She saw you go into the room, and then me. And then she saw me wheel the cart out and Henry's hand flop out from underneath.
Randi: So, why isn't she exposing us? I mean, is she blackmailing you?
Jesse: No, no. She claims she destroyed the tapes. She says she just wants the insurance money. She doesn't want it held up in some long, drawn-out inquiry. She said she would keep quiet about this. Her approaching you like this changes everything. I want you to focus on your baby and your husband, and you let me take care of all of this, because I will and I promise you -- hey.
Frankie: Hey, Dad.
Jesse: Hey. I was just on my way out. Had to come by and see how the brand new mother-to-be is doing.
Frankie: Ok. And I don't get no love?
Jesse: Nope. She's doing all the work. You slacking.
Frankie: Mm, mm, mm, mm. How are you feeling?
Randi: A little better. That soda water should really help.
Jake: David just came out and apologized.
Amanda: The DNA test pretty much sealed it for him. I believe he's sincere.
Marissa: Yeah, that's what I was just telling her. I really think he's trying to make things right.
Krystal: Well, forgive me if I don't accept that. I'm sorry, I just don't think I can forgive him again.
Jake: Really? Well, here's your chance to find out.
Krystal: I don't know if I should turn and run or go to him, hug him or kill him. Excuse me.
Jake: Ten bucks says she slaps his face.
Amanda: I don't think so.
Marissa: No, me neither. I'll take the bet.
David: I gather they told you what I did.
Krystal: You lied to me again.
David: An opportunity arose to prove things once and for all. And, yes, I succumbed. But it did prove that I was wrong. Doesn't make it right, I know.
Krystal: No, it doesn't.
David: My son is dead, Krystal. I accept that now. I need to get on with my life. And I need the people I care about to believe that. I need you to believe that.
Krystal: I don't know if I can.
David: Would you at least think about it?
Krystal: Yes, I will.
David: Good. That's all I can ask.
Krystal: Hey, listen. Do you want to take a walk or something?
David: You know, I would love to do that, but there's something I need to do first. Will you please understand -- we'll take that walk some other time, but I need to finish what I started.
[Knock on door]
Liza: What do you want?
David: I just want you to listen. I want to tell you what I've done.
Liza: Well, I certainly hope this is the abridged version, because there's not enough time to hear about all your sins.
David: I came to believe that you had faked your pregnancy or had a miscarriage and that your baby over there was actually the baby Amanda delivered and claimed was dead.
Liza: Wow, that's certainly imaginative.
David: Well, it's not like I didn't have precedence to fall back on, Liza. When Colby was born, you weren't exactly forthright with her parentage.
Liza: Oh, come on now. That is nothing compared to this evil scheme that you just --
David: I had a DNA test run with a sample of your son compared to mine.
Liza: You son of a --
David: It didn't match.
Liza: Of course, it didn't match. David, what -- what is it that you want?
David: I guess, in the spirit of trying to put this all behind us, I'm asking for your forgiveness. Will you accept my promise that it all ends right here and now?
Liza: Yes. Yes, I will.
David: Thank you. It means a lot.
Madison: From the scowl on your face, you've been talking to your daughter-in-law. Hey!
Jesse: What are you doing? What are you up to?
Madison: Maybe I just wanted to see what was so special about the woman that my husband never stopped loving. I could never get him to love me, because she was always in his thoughts. Not an easy thing for a wife to live with. But how ironic -- the love of his life ended up ending his life.
Ryan: In the next couple of days it's gonna be very, very important what you say and how you say it.
Kendall: Well, sometimes I feel like I did do it. I mean, enough people accuse you, and you start questioning things, feeling like you've been hiding something from yourself or from other people. God, Ryan, this whole thing -- this whole thing has got me so screwed up. I -- I don't know. You know what? This is not a good idea. Um, I'm sorry. I shouldn't have come here.
Ryan: Hey. Hey, little one.
Emma: I heard voices.
Ryan: You did? What did you hear?
Emma: You kept my picture.
Ryan: Uh, yeah, I did. I was just showing it to a friend. Honey, what did you hear?
Emma: You think Mommy killed Stuart.
Ryan: No, sweetheart, I didn't say that.
Emma: Yes, you did. I heard it. But Mommy didn't kill Stuart.
Ryan: Ok. I know -- I know it's really hard, you know? I know this is -- but you drew the picture.
Emma: I didn't see Mommy shoot him.
Ryan: Did you see who did?
Liza: Well, thank you for your honesty and your promise.
Liza: Um, David was just here. How did you do it? How did you convince him that the baby isn't his?
Jake: It doesn't really matter how I did it. I made the switch and David bought the whole thing.
Liza: Well, you are a miracle worker.
Jesse: Why don't you just take your insurance money and run far away.
Madison: Or what?
Jesse: You don't know me. I will do anything to protect my family, and if you ever, ever upset my daughter-in-law again, you will absolutely regret the day you got to know me. I promise.
Madison: How dare you threaten me! You're the one covering up a murder. If you try to pull anything on me, I will not only bring you down, but your whole damn family as well. Excuse me.
Frankie: Any better?
Randi: Yeah. What would I do without you?
Frankie: My darling, you should not worry about that.
Randi: Aw. I think all I need now is a little nap. Thank you, baby. I love you.
Frankie: I love you.
[Cell phone beeps and Frankie sees a message from an unknown sender: "Are you sure it's your baby?"]
Kendall: I went to see Ryan.
Zach: All right.
Kendall: Well, when I got there, I realized how stupid I was being, and I turned around to leave and then he saw me in the hallway.
Zach: Hey, Kendall, believe it or not, there are some things right now that are more important than your little visits to Ryan Lavery. I always knew that North had some kind of an ace in the hole, something he's gonna spring on us at the trial. Liza's been working on it.
Kendall: Did Liza find out something?
Zach: Who else might have seen you that night?
Kendall: Zach, we've been over this a million times.
Zach: Indulge me.
Kendall: All right. Um, you saw me. Ryan, Tad, David.
Zach: What about the kids?
Kendall: You mean Little A?
Kendall: You think Emma saw something?
Ryan: Now, you said that you saw Tad for a minute, but didn't you spend the rest of that night in the nursery before your mom and Adam took you to the attic? Right? You were watching a movie with Little A.
Emma: But it went dark. I was scared, so I went downstairs.
Ryan: And what did you see?
Ryan: And did he see you? What else did you see?
Emma: I saw Kendall shoot Stuart.
