Angie: Oh, darling, it's all here. Oh, my goodness, there's a drug analysis, Adam's blood results, David's history, proof that the prescription labels are counterfeit --
Angie: I mean, how can the Ethics Committee not see that David was the one that gave Adam the drugs that impaired him and caused cardiac arrest?
Jake: I just wish that we had a fingerprint on a prescription bottle or something, you know?
Angie: Yeah, but it's almost as good, and the Ethics Committee has the power to strip David of his position and his privileges and maybe even contest his license to practice medicine, and if we're lucky, David will find a new rock to crawl under far away from Pine Valley.
Jake: I can't believe it because I never thought this day would come. I never really thought it would come.
[Knock at door]
Angie: Heh, well, it's here.
Amanda: Am I interrupting?
Jake: No, you know what? Um, question. How many doctors does it take to -- to change a light bulb?
Amanda: How many?
Jake: I don't know. I was actually asking you how many -- never mind. How are you? What are you doing here?
Amanda: I'm good. It's a routine checkup.
Amanda: The desk nurse said you were still here, so I thought I'd come and say hello.
Jake: Yes, it's a lovely hello.
Amanda: Hey --
Amanda: So is it true? I mean, is David actually going to be busted?
Jake: Busted, thrown out on his ass, and kicked out of town.
Krystal: What are you doing?
Liza: I can explain.
Jesse: I bet you can.
Liza: I was in the house.
Jesse: To kill Adam?
Liza: No, I didn't kill Stuart, but I know who did.
Jesse: You know who murdered Stuart Chandler.
Liza: Yeah, I don't care what Zach Slater is saying. I was on the terrace, and the only one I saw there was Kendall.
Kendall: I don't understand. Zach just told me to stay away from him for good, to just forget about him.
Ryan: He's trying to protect you, Kendall.
Kendall: Well, why would he have to protect me? He's the one who needs protecting. I mean, he's the one who -- he confessed. Oh, my God. Oh, my God. Zach confessed because he thinks I killed Stuart. You think I killed him, too?
Ryan: No. Kendall, I don't think you killed Stuart. I know you would tell me if you did.
Kendall: Well, Zach thinks I did, and his confession is a lie. He's doing it to protect me.
Zach: I've waived my right to an attorney.
Judge: Given the gravity of the charges against you, I highly recommend you at least seek advice of counsel.
Kendall: Your honor, I'm Mr. Slater's counsel.
Jake: We -- we have documentation, a drug analysis that shows that Adam was given a combination of benzodiazepine and digitalis, right? So Adam's confusion, his impaired judgment, his cardiac arrest, all are a result of these drugs.
Amanda: So it could really happen. David could finally be stopped.
Jake: By the time the Ethics Committee is done with him, he will not be the chief of staff. He might even lose his license to practice medicine at all, and this guy's going to have a cloud so dark over him he's going to have to move to another planet just to get a light.
Krystal: Angie tested Adam's medication. They know you switched those pills.
David: No, they suspect it. That's one thing. Proving it beyond a reasonable doubt, that is another. I am not going to go down for this.
Krystal: What are you going to do?
David: What I always do, Krystal. I'm going to fight.
Krystal: Do you have a plan?
David: I'm going to say or do whatever I need to to beat this. I've already lost my children, my grandson. I'll de damned if I'm going to lose my job, too.
Liza: So I went into the house to see Colby, and upstairs, there she was. She was sleeping, and then I heard someone coming, so I left, and outside, on the terrace, I saw Kendall.
Jesse: Did she see you?
Liza: I don't know. I don't think so.
Jesse: Was she by the terrace doors?
Liza: Yes, yes, she was. God, I -- just hate doing this.
Jesse: What? Telling the truth?
Liza: Come on, you think I'm enjoying this?
Jesse: Well, the best way to protect yourself is to shine a light on someone else, right?
Liza: Yeah, listen. Kendall and I have known each other for a long time, and I've recently met Zach. He's a good man. I don't want to hurt them.
Jesse: All right, so back to the truth. Did Kendall have a gun?
Liza: Yes, she had a gun.
Jesse: Did you see her pull the trigger?
Liza: Well, no, no. I left, but I heard the shot. It was a few seconds later.
Jesse: A few seconds. How many seconds? 10, 5, 15?
Liza: I don't know. I only took a few steps. Not many.
Zach: That's Kendall Hart, my ex-wife, not an attorney.
Judge: Ms. Hart, given that you are not the defendant's attorney, I suggest you be seated.
Kendall: You can't let this happen.
Judge: One more outburst, and you will be cited for contempt.
Ryan: Ok, let's sit down. Let's sit down.
Kendall: Ok, all right.
Judge: Zach Slater, you are charged with murder in the first degree. How do you plead?
Judge: The defendant has entered a plea of guilty. Sentencing will be set for Wednesday, June 3. Mr. Slater, you will remain in custody. You will be transferred to the state prison as soon as possible to await sentencing.
Kendall: This can't be happening.
Judge: Court is adjourned.
Kendall: This is wrong. This is wrong. Zach, I know why you're doing this. You're doing it to protect me, because you think that I killed Stuart, but I didn't do it. I'm telling you I did not kill him. Please, you have to change your plea. You have to tell them the truth.
Zach: I did tell them the truth. I pulled the trigger, killed a man, innocent man, a good man. Go take care of the kids. You make sure she does.
Ryan: I will.
Man: Come on, let's go.
Kendall: No, wait a minute, Zach. Come on, Zach, please! I mean, is it possible? Do you think Zach really did it? Did he really kill Stuart?
Krystal: You don't have to fight them. I know any hospital in the country would be happy to have you on their staff.
David: I am not running, Krystal. I'm going to stay. I'm going to fight, and I'm going to win.
Krystal: They're going to crucify you.
David: I have never backed down from a fight in my life. When something this important is at stake, I fight to win, and I take no prisoners.
Krystal: This isn't about your damn job. This is about Amanda's baby, your baby. You want to stay close so that you can grab that baby as soon as it's born.
David: Ok, you're right. That baby is one of the principal reasons I'm staying in Pine Valley.
Kendall: Zach wanted to kill Adam if Ian died, and I told him -- I said if he couldn't, then I would, and now, Adam's alive, Stuart is dead, and Zach's going to prison for the rest of his life. I mean, maybe he didn't confess to protect me. Maybe he confessed because he did it, and he didn't want to have a, you know, the big trial and all the craziness and publicity. He wanted to spare the boys.
Ryan: Whatever the reason, this is his choice, Kendall. This is what he wanted.
Kendall: Zach said he didn't want the boys to know him, Ryan. He wanted me and us to forget him. And how could he say that? How could he mean that, to never want to hold Spike again, to never want to see Ian? I don't think he means that. I think -- I don't believe it, and I need to do something.
Ryan: You know, what you can do is you can love the boys, ok? That's what you can do. You can raise them to be the men that Zach would be proud of.
Kendall: I have to get back to the hospital.
Ryan: Are you going to be all right?
Kendall: Ian will not see his mother cry again. I've done enough of that lately.
Ryan: Call me later, ok?
Kendall: Ok. It's over. Zach confessed.
J.R.: What happened?
Ryan: He's in custody. He's going to be transferred to the state prison until he's sentenced.
J.R.: Well, I guess that's some sort of closure, knowing that Uncle Stuart's killer's behind bars.
Scott: That damn valve. I wanted to save lives, but instead, I almost cost Slater's son his life, and it got my father killed.
Jesse: Kendall inside?
Ryan: No, she left.
Jesse: Know where she is? I've got a few questions.
Ryan: Why? The case is closed. Zach confessed.
Jesse: Yeah, well, we both know why he did that, don't we?
Ryan: Yeah, because he did it.
Jesse: No, because he's protecting somebody, Ryan, that same somebody that you are protecting.
Gayle: Dr. Hayward?
David: I can't talk right now, Gayle.
Gayle: I know, the Ethics Committee. I've been so worried.
David: Well, that's very sweet of you to be concerned.
Gayle: You're important to me.
David: As you are to me.
Gayle: Did you get my message?
David: Yes, I did. I don't know what I would do without you.
Gayle: Then you're not worried?
David: No, no. You look absolutely radiant today.
Angie: They're waiting for us. Are you ready?
David: I wouldn't miss it for the world.
Scott: We tried to play God, J.R., and he slammed us. We think we are so clever. We think we are so great. We can decide if a child lives, and we can make a little money in the process, but he showed us, didn't he? He took the one person who doesn't care about money, whose intentions are so good and so pure. No, because of our choices, because of our arrogance, I lost my father, Adam lost his brother, and little Slater lost his dad.
J.R.: It's all true. We screwed up, but that doesn't mean that we give up. We can't fix this. We can't make this right, but we can use this to make better decisions.
Scott: Yeah, well, my first decision? I am burying this valve with my father.
Ryan: I'm not protecting anyone here, Jesse. I'm not protecting Kendall. I know for a fact that she did not pull that trigger.
Jesse: You say that as if you were there with her, and before you say anything else, I just need you to know that I have a witness that was there on the property that night.
Ryan: Ok, yeah, I was there.
Jesse: You lied to me, Ryan. You said Kendall was in the chapel.
Ryan: She went to the Chandler's.
Jesse: And you went after her.
Ryan: Yes, I did.
Jesse: Well, I appreciate the cooperation thus far, but I'm going to need just a few more details.
Ryan: Well, the only details are she was angry. I know she was angry, and I knew that I had to be the one to go get her. That's it.
Jesse: Did she have a gun?
Ryan: No, she did not have a gun.
Kendall: Adam saw me at his house with a gun.
Jesse: Then what?
Ryan: Then we ran. We ran. She didn't do it, Jesse.
Jesse: So you were there with Kendall when the gun went off.
Ryan: Yes, we were together when we heard the shot.
Jesse: Got anything else to add to that?
Ryan: No, that's it.
Jesse: Turn around, please.
Ryan: Why, why, why?
Jesse: Obstruction of justice for one.
Ryan: What are you talking about, Jesse? I just told you the truth.
Jesse: Well, that's highly debatable, and I know for certain you lied to me on the night of the murder. I just want to keep you on ice until I speak to Kendall and make sure her recollections are the same as yours, ok?
Liza: Oh, excuse me, I didn't --
Kendall: Oh, I'm sorry, I'm sorry.
Liza: Kendall, hi.
Kendall: Liza, hi. Hi, I heard that you were back.
Liza: Yeah, in the flesh.
Kendall: Yeah, and very pregnant, I might add.
Kendall: Yeah, um -- so are you in town long?
Liza: Well, I've come to see Colby, but we are really going to have to catch up one of these days, huh?
Kendall: Yeah, but listen. Are you ok?
Liza: I'm fine. I just -- Stuart's, you know, death and all.
Kendall: Yeah. Well, you know, I think -- why don't you sit down a minute? Seriously, I think stress is not good for the baby. Just sit for a minute.
Liza: Oh, thank you.
Kendall: Or I'm going to sic a doctor right on you.
Liza: Ok, well, how -- how are you doing?
Kendall: Well, I just came from my ex-husband's arraignment. No -- no lawyer, no trial. He refuses to fight.
Liza: I was afraid of that when I offered to be his counsel.
Kendall: I -- I didn't know that you knew Zach.
Liza: Oh, yeah, we met briefly at the casino.
Kendall: Wow, represent the man accused of killing your mother's husband. That's very generous of you.
Liza: Well, he turned me down. Listen, Kendall, honey, I really have to go. My mother's due back, and, you know, she needs me.
Kendall: Oh, of course, of course. Well, we'll catch up soon. You could fill me in on when you became a lawyer.
Liza: I'd like that.
Zach: So what do we do now?
Man: You'll enjoy one of our lovely cells until we arrange transport to the state pen.
Officer: Ballistics report, bullets match the weapon found on Mr. Slater.
Man: Other prints?
Officer: Yeah, some still unidentified latents, but they're mostly his. I've got a call into Chief Hubbard.
Man: Well, we don't need him. Perp confessed. Case closed. Put the gun in a shoebox. Well, this may be the first time I can say it's been a pleasure.
Marian: How are you, darling, and your baby?
Liza: Oh, Mom, please. I'm more concerned about you right now.
Marian: A real-estate convention. It's a stupid real-estate convention. I kissed him good-bye. I told him I'd be home in time to help him pick our strawberries. Stuart liked making shortcake, and now I'm planning his funeral.
Liza: Mom, I'm so sorry. Come here. Sit down. Sit down.
Marian: Oh, oh. Oh, my God. What am I going to do without him?
Liza: Mom, I'm here. I'm here for you. You've been by my side for so much. Just let me be here for you now.
Marian: Ah, I wasn't always so supportive of you, darling. You know, back when you were younger, with Tad, all those affairs. Oh, my God, so many men.
Liza: Mom, that is history.
Marian: Yeah. Because of Stuart. They say people can't change, Liza, but Stuart just turned me inside out. He found the love in me that I didn't even know I had. He was my one true love.
Krystal: Yes, I know I've called before, several times. Yes, Marissa Tasker. I know, I know. You told me she moved out. Are you telling me that she hasn't been in touch at all?
Krystal: Thank you.
Marissa: Krystal? I hope you don't mind. The door was open.
Krystal: You came back.
Marissa: Not for the reason you think.
David: I have never kept my personal feelings towards Adam Chandler a secret. I hate the man, not the least for which he endangered the life of a child with his faulty heart valve. Now, I'm sure I speak for many of the people in this community when I say I wish that bullet found Adam instead of his brother Stuart, but does that mean that I tampered with his medication? Drugged him intentionally to make him seem incompetent? Of course, not. But believe me, the man is capable of doing that all by himself. Though I have to admit, there was a certain genius to the plan.
Angie: You threatened Mr. Chandler on numerous occasions. You're more than familiar with the medication in question. You have access to blank hospital prescription labels that you could forge.
David: I believe Dr. Martin is equally familiar with the drug in question, and didn't you threaten Adam Chandler?
Jake: Well, I'm not being brought up in front of the Ethics Committee, but are you saying that you didn't switch the meds? I mean, are you stating that for the record?
David: I can assure you, Dr. Polansky, I have too much respect for this hospital, for our profession, to so grossly abuse my position. I would never allow my personal feelings of disgust to in any way override my professional ethics.
Jake: Honest, can I just say that, honestly, that's exactly what Dr. Hayward does? He has a long history of doing that, using his skill and his private lab to bring harm to people. Does anybody remember the libidizone fiasco? Or, in 2005, he had his license revoked? In fact, at one point in time, he was demoted to janitor of this hospital because he was not fit to touch patients.
David: All right. Now, that is something Dr. Martin is saying which is actually true. Yes, I have made some mistakes in the past, all of which I paid dearly for and from which I learned a great deal. Now, I would never risk the career that I worked so hard for or squander the talent that I've been so blessed with and treasure to bring down Adam Chandler or any other person, for that matter.
Angie: You and Adam were at each other's throats over Little Adam's custody, and you lost.
David: Ok. Yes, that is true, but does that in turn mean that I drugged Adam Chandler into senility out of revenge? Of course, not. I mean, let's be honest here. If that were true, and you had any cold hard evidence of this, you would have brought me to the police to have me arrested, right? So why am I here? I'll tell you why. Because all you have are your suspicions and your hatred toward me. It's certainly not enough to convict me in a court of law and not even enough to bring me before this committee, frankly. All right, let me tell you something. If there was a vendetta here, it is against me, ok? I am the victim. I have had to suspend both Dr. Hubbard and Dr. Martin on separate occasions for being flagrantly irresponsible, and ever since the day I took over from Joe Martin, they have wanted me gone, ok? They resented my position here. So why don't we just get down to brass tacks? It's not too difficult to figure out your plan. You agree to keep this between us, in exchange for which I step down as chief, and I leave town to practice medicine elsewhere. That's pretty much it, right?
Jake: Well, are you admitting that you did it? Are you admitting that you did it?
Gayle: I did it. And I've continued to give the pills to Mr. Chandler.
Jake: Because Dr. Hayward told you to do that, right?
Gayle: No, because I love him.
Gayle: I wanted to help him. I saw how much Dr. Hayward loved his grandson, how much he deserved to be with that little boy. When Mr. Chandler started turning the child against him, I couldn't just stand there and do nothing.
Angie: Oh, please. She's lying.
David: All right. Nurse Gayle, why would you endanger the life of a patient? You do realize that you broke trust with this hospital.
Gayle: I did it for you. I almost got caught. Erica Kane became suspicious, but I was careful. No one knew, until now.
Woman: This is very serious charge.
Gayle: I'd do it again.
Jake: You are a great actress. You're a sucky nurse, but you're a great actress.
Gayle: It's the truth. I'll sign a confession, whatever you want.
Dr. Polansky: Nurse Walker, you are hereby relived of your duties. You will be brought up before the nursing board. They can decide if criminal charges will be pursued.
Angie: You are so dismissed.
Gayle: I did it for you.
Dr. Polansky: I believe the matter's been resolved.
David: Thank you. Thank you very much. That went well. Don't you think?
Angie: You know, you may be chief of staff and a brilliant surgeon, but some day, you are going to go too far, cross a line that you can never, ever come back from, and, finally, we will all have justice. The only thing that I pray for is that day is not too far away.
David: You can wear out your knees in prayer all you want, Doctor. Sometimes God's answer is a simple no.
Krystal: But you're here.
Marissa: I heard on the news about Scott's adoptive father being killed. It made me think about a lot of things -- losing my parents, how alone I felt, and then I found out I had you and David. Family is family.
Krystal: Whether you like it or not.
Marissa: Yeah, something like that. Look, I just think that maybe I overreacted, got slammed, slammed back, and left.
Krystal: But walking away didn't make it go away?
Marissa: God, I don't know if this is the craziest thing I've ever done or the smartest, but I was thinking that maybe I owed you another chance, you and David. No promises, but maybe if I do this, maybe some day I'll understand.
David: Nurse Walker, may I have a moment of your time, please? You were brilliant.
David: Spectacular. You had this room in palm of your hands. You had my life in your hands, and you saved me. Thank you.
[David hands Gayle a check]
Gayle: Dr. Hayward, this is -- well, it's so much more than we discussed.
David: Yeah, yeah. There's something else I would like you to do for me, if that's all right. I have a patient. It's a special case in a private facility. It's some distance from here. Now, this patient requires around-the-clock care. I can't be there as much as I would like to. The staff there is competent enough, but I would feel so much better if someone with your skill, your talent, your compassion is there on my behalf. Do you think you can do that?
Gayle: Nothing would make me happier.
David: You'd do that for me?
Gayle: I'll leave immediately.
David: All right. Here, this is the address, ok?
Gayle: You will visit?
David: Absolutely, as often as I can. You really have been a Godsend. Thank you.
Marian: Scott, I want to put up some of Stuart's paintings.
Marian: So that people can see what a genius he was, feel his -- his goodness and his love.
Scott: They will.
Marian: I just -- I want this to be a true celebration of his life, and how he died, the murder, will have no place within these walls.
Scott: No, we will leave that at the door, and we will send that off to the angels in style.
Marian: Oh, Scott, Stuart loved you so much. I can't tell you how happy I am that you're here right now.
Scott: Being back here, it's made me realize I've got family, and I miss that.
Liza: Yeah, me, too.
Marian: Well, I have to tell you that Stuart would be so happy.
Scott: I swear that he is working his magic from up there.
Scott: Bringing this family back together again.
Zach: What the hell are you doing here?
Ryan: Jesse has a witness. He knows that Kendall was at Chandler's. Now, I told him that I was with her when the gun went off, that we were together, away from the house, and we heard the shot together.
Zach: But you weren't together?
Ryan: No, we weren't.
Zach: No, and now, you're here, and Jesse's looking for Kendall. What if your stories don't match?
Ryan: If you confessed because you think that Kendall did it, you made a mistake, Zach. She didn't do it.
Zach: How would you think that? Because you don't want to believe it?
Kendall: Sleep well, sweet boy. Mamma loves you.
Jesse: How's he doing?
Kendall: He's better.
Jesse: Hey, you got a minute?
Kendall: Yeah, sure. I'll be right back.
Jesse: Yeah, I'm just investigating a few loose ends. Now, Kendall, the night that Stuart was murdered, you said that you were here?
Kendall: I was. When I thought Ian had died, I went to the chapel to pray, and it worked.
Jesse: Yeah, but you weren't in the chapel. You weren't wandering the halls. You weren't up on the roof. Kendall, I have two witnesses that place you at the Chandlers' the night that Stuart was killed.
David: Great news. I've been cleared. The Ethics Committee ruled in my favor. What do you say we celebrate?
Krystal: There's even more to celebrate. Marissa's back. She wants to give us another chance. It could happen. We could finally be a family.
Liza: Hey. What you thinking?
J.R.: Just how much I want this over.
J.R.: I want Slater in prison, Uncle Stuart buried, and my dad healthy so we can start being a family again. We could honor Uncle Stuart's memory.
Liza: Yeah. What -- kinder, gentler Chandler? You think Adam will go for that?
J.R.: I don't know. At least this will be over, and we can have a fresh start.
Liza: Yeah. Yeah, I hope so.
Ryan: She told me. Kendall told me about the pact. That doesn't mean that she did it.
Zach: When Jesse stopped me at the hospital, Kendall left with one thing on her mind.
Officer: All right. Come on, Slater. Got a nice little cell waiting for you.
Kendall: Yes, I was at the Chandlers'.
Jesse: So what happened that night, Kendall?
Kendall: I thought Ian had died, and I was so angry, so I went to the terrace, and I looked through the door, and I saw J.R. and Adam. They were arguing, and J.R. had a gun. I heard someone coming, so I hid.
Jesse: Did you see who it was?
Kendall: No. I don't know who it was. It was just some woman. After that, I went back into the house, and I saw a gun on the floor, so I picked it up, and then, I saw Tad, but it was like he had been hit, and he was passed out, so I kept looking for Adam, and I ended up back on the terrace. That's when I finally saw Adam alone. I thought it was Adam, so I pointed the gun at him, ready to make him pay, but I couldn't do it, so I ran.
Jesse: You ran where?
Kendall: Well, I ran towards the garden, and that's when I heard the gunshot go off, and I just kept running. I just wanted to get away.
Ryan: That was a gunshot.
Kendall: So that's when I saw Ryan in the garden, and then we left.
Jesse: You're sure you're not leaving something out here? I have a confession.
Kendall: Ok. I saw Zach with a gun.
Jesse: Kendall, why didn't you tell me all of this in the first place? You wanted to protect Zach, right?
Jesse: So just to be clear, you were alone when the gun went off?
Kendall: Yes. Yes, I said I was alone when I heard the gunshot go off. Are we done here, Jesse, because I'd really like to get back to Ian?
Jesse: Yeah, we're done.
Kendall: Thank you. My baby.
Ryan's voice: We heard the shot.
Kendall's voice: I heard the shot.
Ryan's voice: We were together.
Kendall's voice: I was alone.
Angie: Jesse, I heard about the arraignment.
Jesse: Yeah. I don't think Zach killed Stuart.
Angie: He confessed.
Jesse: I think Kendall did it.
Angie: But Zach took the blame so the mother of his child could stay with their son. Jesse, if you arrest her, you'll be doing just that, keeping her away from her son.
Jesse: Yeah. If I don't do anything, a father, an innocent man, is taken away from his son. Baby, I'm not sure I can do that.
