Erica: No, don't take those pills.

Adam: What's with you, woman? This is my prescribed medication. Angie Hubbard's already analyzed these pills.

Erica: Yes, but did anybody analyze the woman who's giving them to you?

Gayle: Oh, not this again.

Adam: She was sent by the hospital.

Erica: She was sent by David Hayward.

David: You lost our baby. I grieved that child -- the children we would never have together. You held me. You cried with me. You said that you wished that you could make it right, that we could have children together, have that dream. All this time -- all this time we did have a child, and you said nothing? God, Krystal! How the hell could you do something like this?

Krystal: Go ahead and do it. Go ahead and kill me. I know you want to, and I deserve it. I deserve to die.

Marissa: No, David, don't.

Krystal: Marissa, I thought -- I thought you were leaving.

Marissa: Yeah, I was, but I couldn't -- not until I -- not the way things are.

David: Good. We need this. We needed to see each other.

Angie: You know, every -- everywhere that I go in this hospital, I just find myself thinking about how excited Frankie was about the surgical program, and now his hands -- Jesse, I can't -- I can't stand it. I have to go to him.

Jesse: No, no, baby. Not yet. I know this is rough. You want to be with him. I do too, but come on, Randi's his wife now, and Brot is a friend that's been through even worse than what he's going through. I totally believe that these are the two right people to be with the man now.

Angie: Hey.

Kendall: Hey.

Angie: Is everything all right?

Kendall: Yeah. Yeah, the machine seems to be working just fine.

Jesse: Where's Zach? He's still here, isn't he?

Kendall: I don't know. I have no idea. I came in there, and the nurse said that he suddenly just left. I'm scared.

[Aidan screams as he struggles to get out of his bonds]

Aidan: Annie, where are you? Annie!

Ryan: Ready to go home, honey?

Emma: Is Mommy coming, too?

Ryan: Mommy's not here, sweetheart.

Emma: Yes, she is.

Ryan: Honey, you must have been having a dream.

Erica: I caught her in a whispered conversation with David Hayward, and that made me want to dig deeper. According to my sources at the hospital, our nurse Gayle here has a serious case of hero worship for her Dr. Hayward.

Gayle: How dare you! What are you implying?

Erica: That you are a spy for David Hayward, and God knows what else, but I don't care about that. What matters is that you are here to keep an eye on Adam, and to influence Adam's grandson against him in favor of David Hayward, and that you report dutifully back to your lord and master whenever possible.

Gayle: This is outrageous, and not just an insult to me, but to Dr. Hayward, as well. Everyone knows how much David adores that little boy, and for you to suggest that there's some ulterior motive with David's affections for -- well, it's obvious by your silence that the nurse-patient relationship has been compromised. I'll have the hospital send someone else.

Erica: Honestly, Adam, you have lost your touch. I would have thought by now you would have definitely have seen through her.

Adam: Who's to say I didn't? Maybe I just wanted to see how the game was played. What the hell do you want?

Zach: Justice.

Scott: Getting involved with the heart valve -- it wasn't about just trying to save some lives. For the longest time I had been denying who I was -- the Chandler part of me, anyway. My mother's memory, putting her on a pedestal, and then watching her waste away to nothing -- it's too hard to do, so I ran. I ran from the thoughts of her. I ran from my father. I ran from uncle Adam, but mostly from myself. But you can only run from family for so long, adopted or not, and I needed this chance. I needed to be the hero for all of you.

J.R.: Yeah, well, maybe next time. Here they are. Let me do the talking. I've gotten pretty good at dealing with my father's damage control.

Scott: No. I need to do it. This is my responsibility.

J.R.: Ok, but nothing stupid. No changing the story.

Scott: Just the truth.

Marissa: What I came here to tell you, and what you both are just going to have to understand and accept, is that you're not my parents. The people who adopted me and raised me -- who died way too young, they will always be the only parents that I'll ever have, and I'll never love anyone that way again.

Kendall: I know that look in Zach's eyes, and it scares the hell out of me.

Angie: I'm so sorry the valve didn't work.

Kendall: Well, Zach is furious that Ian isn't strong enough -- that he has to be on the machine until he can have another surgery.

Jesse: Are you absolutely sure?

Kendall: I honestly -- I think the waiting was driving him crazy.

Jesse: Can you double check? All right, well, he's nowhere in the hospital. Security checked the cafeteria. They checked the grounds, checked the surrounding area. Are you sure you called every number he has?

Kendall: Yeah. Yeah, I called home. I called the casino. I called his cell. He's not answering me on purpose. He would want to know any news about Ian.

Jesse: Well, there's no question where he went, is there?

Zach: You knew. This whole time you knew, and you did nothing. You put your greed ahead of my son's life. Now what do you think I should do now?

Adam: Just get out of my house.

Erica: Zach, please. I am just as angry as you are about Ian, but Adam is not well. There is something wrong with him.

Zach: You need to stay out of this.

Adam: Leave the woman alone, and get out of my house. You're venting to the wrong person. You should be having this conversation with Hayward. Especially since you were stupid enough to believe his accusations.

Zach: The truth, man-to-man. Did you or did you not know that there was something wrong with this valve?

Adam: We knew that there was problem with the valve, yes. Scott tried to stop it, but it was too late.

Zach: And you did nothing. Just sitting there, quiet, hoping for some kind of miracle, hoping that Ian will pull through, and then your company would be ok, and no one would say anything.

Adam: If we knew beforehand that the problem was there, then we would have stopped the operation. But come on, Zach, the child was on the operating table. The prototype was supposed to save his life. If you'd have been in that position, you would have done exactly the same thing I did.

Ryan: Zach.

[Door shuts]

Annie: Hi. Here.

[Annie gives Aidan some water]

Annie: I'm so sorry, Aidan. This is not what I wanted.

Aidan: I thought you loved me, Annie.

Annie: I do still love you.

Aidan: Well, then why are you doing this?

Annie: I cannot live without Emma.

Aidan: You have to, all right? For her sake and for yours. I thought we were going to start a brand new life together.

Annie: I'm sorry, but I have to get my baby back. You'll never really understand that. Aidan, I am a mother before anything else. I am a mother.

Aidan: That doesn't change the circumstances. You have to stop this, Annie, before it's too late.

Annie: Aidan, you don't have children. I'm not faulting you for that, but because of that, you can't understand what I'm going through.

Aidan: You're not going to be able to just take Emma.

Annie: You're wrong. I almost had her tonight. I was so close, and there will be another opportunity when they're least expecting it. I'm sorry. You have to realize that. I just -- I just wish that you could understand.

Aidan: I do understand. That's what I love about you. Nothing could stop me from loving you.

Marissa: I adored my mother and father. No, they weren't perfect, but neither was I. They gave me all they could -- all they had. To even imagine replacing them --

Krystal: Nobody expects you to.

Marissa: Yeah, I've learned enough about the two of you to think that you will. You're both obsessed with Babe, with her memory, with trying to control her son.

David: Marissa, look, you're going to have forgive me. Like you, I'm only just now finding out about this. Now, the last thing I want to do is alienate you by saying or doing the wrong thing. You know, I'm not a man who puts much stock in words. They can be twisted, misinterpreted. But I think it would be best if we just attempt to calmly sit down and just talk about this.

Marissa: No, there's nothing to talk about. You know, the truth is, the only reason Krystal came looking for me in the first place was to fill the slot Babe's death had left. She tried to buy me back with a tuition check.

Krystal: No, you're wrong. I just wanted to help you. I never wanted to tell anyone. I never wanted you to find out. I never wanted anyone to find out.

Marissa: Well, now that the cat's out of the bag, let's make things clear with us. I want no part of you whatsoever.

David: Marissa, please. I know you're angry right now because this was kept from you.

Marissa: No, this has nothing to do with her keeping it from me. I've thought about this, and my mind is made up. I have no intention of being a part of your lives. You're not my mother. My mother is dead.

[Door shuts when Krystal leaves]

David: I am so sorry. We were both kept in the dark. I understand what you're feeling right now, but --

Marissa: No, you don't. No, you don't. You have no idea what I'm feeling, and don't you dare try and tell me that you do.

[Ryan holds Zach back from hitting Adam]

Ryan: Zach, stop. Stop, stop, stop, ok? Listen to me. I know you're scared. I know you're angry about Ian. I understand that. I understand it. This is not the way to do it, all right? Think about it. You lay one hand on him, they're going to put you away, and you're not going to be able to be there for Ian when he needs you the most. His company's going down, Zach, after this scandal. Let him be humiliated. There will be plenty of time for revenge later.

Erica: Exactly. Please, Zach, just get back to Ian. Kendall and Ian need you.

Ryan: Come on, man. Come on.

Adam: Thank you for standing by me.

Erica: I should have encouraged him to go ahead and throttle you.

Adam: I'm not the only one to blame here, you know?

Erica: You know, God help me, I did everything I possibly could to get you to convince David to do that surgery, and you knew that that valve could kill Ian.

Adam: I swear to you, I didn't know there was a problem with that valve until it was too late. Don't abandon me now, Erica.

Erica: If anything happens to that baby, you deserve everything that is coming to you.

Ryan: Come on, Zach. You're going to get your shot at Adam. Just do this the right way. Come on.

[Zach knocks Ryan out and returns to Adam's living room]

Erica: No, Zach. No, Zach.

Zach: You know what? I thought about doing this the right way. It's not going to work. I'm going to do it my way.

Marissa: You know, I've heard all I need to hear about you, as well. No one trusts you in this town. That includes me now. I can see your mind working right now. "Oh, poor little Marissa. How can I manipulate her? She's so angry -- so confused. What she needs is a family, a father to replace the one she lost."

David: Look, I understand. You're rightfully upset.

Marissa: Yeah, and righteously pissed off. Don't pull that empathetic crap with me. I'm seeing right through you. You know, you can't settle for being just the great surgeon of the world. You have to go around chasing after your offspring, collecting them like pieces of art to hang on the wall. You know what I really think?

David: No, but I would love to know what you think.

Marissa: I think you're nuts. I think you get off on controlling people, and that you like to punish those that you can't control. From what I've seen and heard in the short time that I've been here, I don't even think you give a damn about your children or your grandchildren. They're all just reasons to attack the world when you don't get your way. Well, since you're not disagreeing, I guess I hit a nerve. Well, then, this is me giving you a real good excuse to go all super-villain on the entire town of Pine Valley. Goodbye, Daddy.

Angie: Randi? Randi, are you still there? Hello? Yes, listen. I was just saying that if you can try and just get a phone to Frankie, let me talk to him, I know he would -- hello? Randi?

Krystal: Angie.

Angie: You look terrible. What happened?

Krystal: I was just sitting in my car, and I felt like I was having a heart attack, so I just drove straight over here.

Angie: It's David again, isn't it?

Krystal: No. No, this time it's all my doing.

Annie: Ryan took her to the Chandlers'. I know that place like the back of my hand, so I climbed the trellis to the sun porch by the nursery, and I saw her sleeping. She was sleeping so sound, and she was so beautiful. And then, of course, Ryan showed up and took her. Probably back here -- probably just floors above us, so close. But he's definitely going to be watching her.

Aidan: And then when Jesse gets a call from Interpol, there's going to be an all-points out for you, and even if you get close to Emma, there will be nowhere where you can take her.

Annie: Well, then I will have to act quickly then, won't I?

Aidan: Yeah, you will -- like in the next 24 hours. And you're right, you won't be able to just walk through the front door. Have you thought about the freight elevator on the first floor? Then you can take the back stairs, but on the south side of the building, because the north side has security cameras. So --

Annie: Wait, slow down. I don't know which one is the south side of the building.

Aidan: I'll draw you a map. Give me a pen and paper, and untie me.

Annie: Ok.

Reporter: What's the latest status on the child who had the faulty valve installed?

Scott: The patient is still recovering from the initial surgery. The more traditional valve will be implanted as soon as possible. Now, let me emphasize that the promise of the Chandler valve --

J.R.: Well, this is a surprise. You were pretty hell-bent on leaving town last time I saw you.

Marissa: Yeah, well, they still owed me my last check. I came back to collect. But since you're here, you should find this out from me.

J.R.: Find out what?

Marissa: Babe wasn't an only child. She had a twin sister. Me.

Zach: Your whole miserable life, you've been getting away with it! Your whole life! It ends now.

Erica: No, Zach. What are you doing, Zach?

Zach: That's where I'm going to shoot you if anything else happens to my son.

[Zach draws a red X in the middle of Adam's forehead]

Erica: Zach --

Jesse: Zach -- Zach, drop it!

Jesse: Drop it now, Zach!

Zach: You mean this?

Jesse: Are you out of your mind?

Adam: All right, lock the bastard up. Assault and battery -- right here. Erica saw it -- she saw it all. She heard the threat, that he was going to put a bullet right here in the middle of my forehead. Tell him! [Laughs] All right, Lavery back here, he was a witness to some of Zach's earlier threats.

Jesse: Take him out to the -- to the foyer.

Adam: Lock him up.

Jesse: I don't think so.

Adam: You don't think so? That man broke into my house and threatened my life, and you're going to do nothing about it? I'll have your badge, Jesse.

Jesse: You're not going to have anything, Adam Chandler. You know, I put my butt on the line for you when you kidnapped your grandson. Then I helped you get him back. You owe me.

Adam: You helped me get off the hook when I kidnapped my own grandson. That's -- listen to yourself. That's pathetic.

Jesse: That man out there, he's got a little boy who needs him right now, because somebody was very careless about what went into his little chest. Now, I will keep Zach away from you, your son, and your nephew. But I got to tell you, I kind of know what he's feeling right now, so you're not going to press any charges. Isn't that right, Erica Kane?

Erica: That is absolutely right. I'm going to make sure he doesn't.

Adam: That is not satisfactory.

Erica: Oh, shut up, Adam.

Zach: Go back to the hospital. I'll arrange for bail. If anything happens with Ian, you just let me know, all right? If anything happens to that boy.

Jesse: You'll be there to hear it for yourself. Uncuff him. You've got to promise me, no more breaking and entering. No more assault -- what's that? Come on. Are you trying to destroy your family?

Zach: If my son dies, it's going to destroy my life.

Scott: Does anybody have any other questions?

J.R.: What the hell are you talking about? Is this some kind of sick joke?

Marissa: It seems Krystal's been hiding it from everybody all these years.

J.R.: I don't believe you. It just doesn't make any sense.

Marissa: Krystal gave birth to fraternal twins, then sold me off to afford diapers for Babe. And then she cozied up to my adoptive parents to keep tabs on me. I never knew the truth, either. It was all done through a third party. Don't give me that look.

J.R.: You just told me that you're Babe's sister.

Marissa: Yeah, but I'm not Babe.

J.R.: No, you're not. You're nothing like her at all.

Marissa: Well, good. At least maybe they'll be one person who won't be obsessing over me once I leave.

J.R.: I wish to hell you never told me. You should've just left.

Scott: So what did you think? What's up with him?

Marissa: Maybe he saw a ghost.

Krystal: I would've kept that secret for the rest of my life, but Adam -- anyway, I never planned on Marissa finding out. Then her parents died, and I had to do what I could to help her. I had to try to give her the life that she deserved, just like I tried to give Babe.

Angie: Then why did you walk out on her just now? I mean, leaving her with David when you knew that she was leaving town?

Krystal: She hates me. She practically told me so, and I don't blame her.

Angie: Krystal, first reactions are always harsh. No matter how she feels about you now, that can change, but only if you both work at it. Keep the honesty going. You know what? I know this is an entirely different situation, but I always tried to remain honest with Cass. I didn't want it to be no relationship at all, which is what you have resigned yourself to.

Krystal: It's too late. I mean, she's gone.

Angie: It is never too late. Now, all you have to do is just find a way to reach out to her, and then get to know each other. No strings, no pressure. It might help you more than you think, because your heart palpitations are coming from what you're keeping inside, not what you're letting out. And you let this girl get away once. You cannot let it happen a second time.

Kendall: You must hate me for talking you into the surgery, for using Adam's valve. Maybe you should have put a big "X" on my forehead instead.

Zach: I don't hate you. I don't blame you for anything. You fought for our son. That's all you did. I blame Adam. I blame Adam and his greed.

Kendall: After what happened tonight, they'll be watching you.

Zach: Yeah, no doubt.

Kendall: And if anything happens to Ian, they won't leave you alone. They'll probably take you into custody to protect Adam. I want you to know if that happens, I'll take care of things. If Ian dies, I'll kill Adam.

David: You have a sister. Someone you never even had a chance to know. Her name is Marissa. She's nothing like you at all. In fact, I have this horrible feeling she's a great deal like me. I'm afraid she has this part of her that's like the part of me that I don't care for very much. This inability to be satisfied with what we have. An insatiable need for something more. You can trust me, Babe, it makes for a very empty life. Maybe she needs someone like you. Someone who found happiness in almost anything -- your mother, your poor son, Little Adam, even J.R. Me? I keep looking for it, but any happiness I seem to stumble on just seems to come and go, that's all. I don't know, maybe I'm just not meant to find it, that's all. Well, if that's your sister's fate as well, heaven help her.

Marissa: You know, and they just expect me to be thrilled about this? Just throw my arms around them as if I won some second chance in a happy family lottery.

Scott: Look, there are no rules of behavior here. This isn't exactly textbook psychology.

Marissa: Yeah, and they act like they expect me to think of my parents as just placeholders.

Scott: You have a lifetime of memories with your parents. Nobody can take that away from you. And now you have a choice. You know how they say you can't choose your family? Well, this time you can. And you can either take off, or you can give these people a chance.

Marissa: No, I -- I can't do that. It's all too sudden. I mean, Krystal and David --

Scott: Are not exactly Mr. and Mrs. Incredible. Yeah, I know. So you're going to take off?

Marissa: Yeah. I mean, everyone who needs to see me has seen me. J.R. wants no part of me. And as for David, well, I think before he starts obsessing over me, I should probably get out of town. A long way away. Maybe find a law school down in Rio.

Scott: I tried running from unresolved issues. It doesn't work. And until you come to terms one way or another, it'll follow you wherever you go.

Marissa: Thanks, but I think I'll take my chances with Rio. I've got one stop to make, and then I'm gone. It's nice to know you, Scott Chandler. Goodbye. Good luck.

Adam: So you just stood there, that madman relative of yours threatening my life, and you just stood there.

Erica: Zach is not a madman.

Adam: So you're blaming me?

Erica: Adam, you said it yourself. You put the survival of your company ahead of the survival of that little boy.

Adam: I wanted to help Ian. I told you. When I found the problem, it was too late.

Erica: Adam, what on earth are you doing?

Adam: Well, no one seems willing to defend me, so I'm going to take matters into my own hands.

[When J.R. enters, Adam points his gun at him]

J.R.: Whoa!

Zach: If Ian dies, you'll kill Adam?

Kendall: What, you don't think I can do it?

Zach: You have Spike to think about.

Kendall: I wouldn't be stupid about it. I would kill Adam, and I would get away with it, too.

Zach: These past few months we've been worlds apart. But with our son --

Kendall: That's a bond we'll always have.

Zach: He's going to be fine. They're going to fix him up. He's going to be a strong young man.

Kendall: Amen to that. But if the outcome should be different, I know what I have to do.

Ryan: What's going on?

Annie: You're trying to trick me. I can see it in your eyes. What? Were you going to grab me and force me to go back to those islands without Emma? Or worse, turn me in to the police?

Aidan: No, I wouldn't do that. Look, I told you, I love you. I want to help you.

Annie: You're good. You almost had me there. You are really good.

Aidan: Annie, now you're just being paranoid. Haven't I always been on your side? You've come this far. If you get caught now, that's it. It's all over. They're going to lock you up forever.

Annie: No. I will always remember what you did for me, Aidan. And I am sorry that I don't believe you, but I can't trust anybody anymore. I'll have to get Emma back on my own. And God help anybody who gets in my way.

Krystal: What happened to Marissa?

David: She's left, or she will soon. I've lost another daughter.

Krystal: I am so sorry. I was wrong, but I don't know what else I would have done at the time.

David: You could've not given her away.

Krystal: I had no choice. I could barely take care of one child, much less two. And how dare you be so self-righteous. We slept together one drunken night, and I never saw you again. I was alone and pregnant. I was just a kid myself. I did what I did so that both of my children could survive. The money I got from the adoption put clothes on Babe's back, food on the table. And Marissa went to a family who could give her much more than I ever could. David, I didn't even know where to begin to find you, but I did the best I could. Otherwise, I would have lost both of them. Now, maybe someday, you'll look past your own suffering and understand what I went through back then and what I'm going through right now.

David: We both ended up here looking for answers. Maybe we should have looked for each other, instead.

J.R.: What the hell are you doing? Put that down.

Adam: Zach Slater just stormed into my house a while ago and threatened to kill me. I think I'll -- nobody cared, including her. She witnessed it, but nobody cared, not even the chief of police. So I think I'll just take things into my own hands.

J.R.: Don't be stupid. Give me the gun.

Erica: Yes, Adam. Give him the gun.

Adam: This is the only thing that's standing between me and a bullet in my head. So I'm going to keep it close by, ok?

[Drawer slams shut]

Adam: Look at you. You look just like all those other people who want me dead.

Kendall: We're coming to an understanding.

Ryan: Angie's out in the hall, and she would like to speak to you two.

Kendall: Ok, you go ahead. I'll be right out.

Ryan: What was that all about?

Kendall: Contingency plans for the future.

Ryan: Would you like to talk about it?

Kendall: No.

Ryan: Is there anything that I can do to help?

Kendall: Yeah. Don't ever ask me about it again.
